Fan Confidence Poll: July 2nd, 2012
ByRecord Last Week: 5-2 (36 RS, 29 RA)
Season Record: 48-30 (373 RS, 312 RA, 46-32 pythag. record), 6.0 games up in AL East
Opponents This Week: @ Rays (three games, Mon. to Weds.), Thurs. OFF, @ Red Sox (four games, Fri. to Sun., two on Sat.)
Top stories from last week:
- The week opened with three games against the Indians. The Yankees pounded Cleveland in the opener, then Phil Hughes shut the Tribe down in Tuesday’s win. The Yankees finished off the sweep the next day.
- The White Sox came to the Bronx for a four-game set, the last AL team the Yankees had yet to face this season. Some bullpen weirdness resulted in a loss in the opener, then Adam Warren got hammered in the second game. Hiroki Kuroda got the Yankees back on track with a win on Saturday, and Hughes followed with another strong performance in yesterday’s win.
- Injury News: Andy Pettitte (ankle) was hit by a batted ball on Wednesday and is expected to miss two months with a fracture. CC Sabathia (adductor) was placed on the DL and is expected to miss two starts. David Aardsma (elbow) was shut down with pain in his surgically repaired right elbow. Pedro Feliciano (shoulder) threw a bullpen session off a full mound. Brett Gardner (elbow) is expected to swing a bat this week. Russell Martin (back) missed a few games but has since returned to the lineup. Pitching prospects Manny Banuelos and Jose Campos (elbows) are both rehabbing in Tampa. Infield prospect Angelo Gumbs (elbow) is on the DL as well.
- Warren and Ryota Igarashi were recalled to take Sabathia’s and Pettitte’s roster spots, then Igarashi was sent down in favor of David Phelps. Warren was sent down for D.J. Mitchell after his disaster start. Dellin Betances was demoted to Double-A.
- The Yankees acquired Chad Qualls from the Phillies for cash or a player to be named later. They also claimed Danny Farquhar off waivers from the Athletics, then designated him for assignment when they claimed Chris Schwinden off waivers from the Indians. Farquhar has since cleared waivers. Matt Antonelli was designated for assignment to make room for Qualls.
- The Yankees did not have interest in Jim Thome, who has since been traded to the Orioles. They also scouted Zack Greinke recently.
- Derek Jeter, Robinson Cano, and Curtis Granderson will all start at their respective positions in the All-Star Game next week. CC Sabathia was selected to the AL team but will not pitch due to his injury.

I’m hoping for Manny to have a speedy recovery.Same goes to Campos.
They seem to be in pretty good shape this year as long as CC and Pettitte come back strong considering Kuroda, Hughes and Nova are already pitching really well.
Getting Gardner and Joba back hopefully will give them a big boost as well.
Seems like a 100 W’s is obtainable with their construction.
I wonder if they are picking up these MRP’s like the Hunt Bros did with silver back in the 80′s?
They’ll trade 7 middle-relievers for Greinke, the brew brass will then flip those relievers to refill their farm. Bam!
I love how quiet things get when they’re winning.
Wait until later today when the Yankees miss on a couple of BA’s top international free agents.
Heh yeah, right? Don’t worry, the traffic around here will pick up when the Yankees are down 2 after the first inning.
After the first Tampa Bay hit tonight, I’m sure we can name the familiar faces that will show up.
Faces. There will be more than one, I’m sure.
Or if A-Rod strikes out with the bases loaded or something of that nature.
Then my evil twin will show up.
your doppleganger is already licking his chops.
I was just thinking the same thing yesterday. It was so nice to be able to just sit back, relax, and enjoy the Old-Timers’ Game knowing that all was well in Yankeeland and we wouldn’t have to hear anyone yapping to the contrary. Ah, the blissful calm of summer.
For now, at least.
do you think stuart a will be criticizing A-Rod when he is playing in the old timers game in 10 years?
OK 20 years….
The old saying “if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all ” works in reverse around here.
If there isn’t something or someone to bitch about, people just stay quiet
In fairness, it’s just the wack-job trolls that stay quiet.
The commenters who offer insight, opinions, and constructive criticism are still here.
Yankees winning streaks : trolls = cross : vampires
Very true.
I hate it just as much when some people act as Yankee apologists and jump down your throat for any criticism of the players or front office but to me it seems that the in game threads are becoming harder to stomach when the Yankees fall behind as people run to the ledge even if its only a run or 2.
I agree w/ you about game threads; I avoid them in real time, but some mornings I’ll skim them to see if anything interesting took place (usually not).
But there are certain commenters (trolls) I don’t read for fear of being stupider after reading their comments.
Criticism is welcome when the criticizer sticks around, is relatively logical, and doesn’t flip out when someone disagrees with him.
Same deal with the apologists.
It’s just way more pleasant when the trolls let the rest of us enjoy conversation.
Even with the pitching injuries, CC will be back soon so I feel good for the regular season. Never thought they’d be up 6 games so quickly here by the break
Been at a 9 for a few weeks now.
CC & Pettitte going down would (should) lower the overall number since it was the ace and the best #3 (maybe) ever.
After being bummed (voted an 8) that they lost some easy series in April/May, what they have done over the last 35 is remarkable.
BTW, flying to Tampa tomorrow to catch the game, is it best to StubHub the tix or get them at the venue?…any area to get or avoid?
I don’t know who the best #3 ever was, but a Brave between ’96-’99 would be a good guess. Maybe the best #4 ever comes from that group, too.
Yeah, in my mind, Smoltz – Maddux – Glavine was the best front 3 I can remember.
The ’69 Orioles and their multiple 20-game winners wouldn’t be a bad choice either.
I’d probably go with the ’69 O’s over the Braves, but either of those 2 teams would be a good choice, especially as the Braves held that group for multiple seasons.
Another week, another 8. I’d actually consider a 9 if there was better health (Mo, Pettitte, ManBan) and milb performances (looking at you Dellin).
But 6 games up before the ASB is a very good place to be.
Fuck it. 10.
I go to 11. Because that’s louder than 10.
Why don’t you just make 10 the loudest?
“We only buy Marshall amps because theirs goes to 11; in case you know…like you need a little more”
/spinaltap’d
Thank you.
Haha I’m glad everyone got the reference.
I would have cyberpunched one of you had any of you claimed you were too young for that movie. That’s just shit you know as a citizen of the Western Hemisphere.
Heh I probably was too young. But my fraternity did a “We go to 11″ themed party one year, so then I went and watched it.
I’m confident you’d come across it, no matter.
8, I sort of hope Jeter “pulls” or “feels a twinge” in his hammie so he can skip the ASG and get some rest.
Strained perineum.
*waits for Brian to tell us Eduardo Nunez has a stronger perineum*
*Waits for Brian to tell us Jeter is not an ace*
*waits for someone to tell me it’s A Rods fault Jeter’s perineum was at risk in the first place*
I hope whoever’s fault it was got some veteran presents on the way out.
Well….he isn’t.
Jeter can’t hit or defend. What is he good for again? Intangibles?
an injured “taint” would be a first in all the years I’ve been watching sports
There was that time Keith Olberman said someone was down with a herniated dick?
OMG. Being that my program collaborates with the Nets, and my new position will get me to work even close with them, I SO want Dwight Howard to get traded. I’d say it’d be an 80% chance I’d meet him before the end of the year.
Just for that, I’m upping my Confidence Vote to 12.
/salvagingcommentasontopic
As a Knicks fan, I’ve been hoping Deron Williams and Dwight Howard end up somewhere other than Brooklyn but then again any pairing that could possibly help bring an end to that unholiness down in Miami has to be viewed as a positive so I don’t know what to hope for.
I’d like to see Deron and Howard up here. I think that, if this arena was going to be dropped a few blocks from me, at least give me something to watch.
Also, anyone they acquire is someone who will be working with my program in some capacity. Deron seemed like a very nice guy when I met him and a few of the others.
I think the Heat would be better served by an older guy like Nash or Kidd who’d sign for less in order to play with the greats and would help solidify a position. I also think Chalmers would hold down the fort just fine if they added some size.
Deron Williams is supposedly a great guy. He has a house in San Diego around the corner from my sister and she’s been in some Gymboree or music and me classes with his wife and children and my sister says they’re lovely down to earth people.
They threw about 200 of our kids a Christmas party last year. He was a bit stand-offish at first, but I think he was expecting too much attention. I was in charge of greeting them (it was him, Farmar, Pietro, and the other Williams on the team) and, honestly, I didn’t recognize him. I just reached out my hand and introduced myself with little fanfare.
He warmed up, though. We were really struggling with giving out gifts to all the kids on time and, in true point guard fashion, he just took the mic, gathered all the kids by age group, and organized things himself. I also had a co-worker teasing him all day long, telling him he looked like Drake, and he took it in stride.
Cool story and he’s an awesome player, probably the 3rd best PG in the league next to Chris Paul and Derrick Rose.
Nash is most likely going to Toronto. No one else can come close to matching that 3/$36 million contract and he’s not leaving that much on the table to take the mini exception at $3 million per from the Heat or Knicks. The Knicks might be able to pull off a sign and trade with Phoenix giving up Landry Fields and be able to give Nash $7-8 per year but I still don’t think that gets it done.
Nash isn’t in it for the money at this stage. He’ll want to go to a situation where that team could win. Toronto ain’t it.
He could go to Miami and poach a ring. They still need another big, but that can happen.
The Knicks are intriguing, but I’m not sure he’d go there without D’Antoni.
The Knicks would probably be better bringing Raymond Felton back to play PG. He played well with that group prior to the Anthony trade.
J.Lin and Done.
That D-Williams and Nash snapshot from last week is probably too unrealistic. Nash isn’t a supporting player yet. He’s not an All-Star PG anymore given the influx of talent into that position, but he’s still good enough to start over the non-D-Will, Rose, Westbrook, Rondo, Irving, Tony Parker, and of course, CP3.
Woops. My bad.
I just realized it was J.Kidd in that photo with D-Williams. I’m an idiot. SMRT Ftw.
Hey, can you put in a word with the big Russian to take Joe Johnson of the Hawks too while you’re at it? We’ll pay part of the contract. In return, all we’d want is a couple cases of Nathan’s hot dogs and a few Junior’s cheesecakes.
Seriously though, sign D-will, offer that same trade pkg for Dwight Howard (even though he’s a bitch), already locked up Wallace, sign Jason kidd to back-up, you’ll need a couple of shooters and backup bigs. That team could make the playoffs under Avery Johnson’s tutelage.
I don’t think I’ll be meeting the big russian anytime soon.
Hold out for more than that. Ask for some DiFara’s pizza at least. We also now have an artisan mayonnaise shop.
YancarloBaez will replace Jeter!
7.
Rays & Red Sox games coming up. Lets see the power show up against power pitching from the rivals. Matt Moore should be a welcomed test.
Moore actually hasn’t been that great. 4.46 FIP and 88 ERA+ this year.
That said, I’m looking forward to seeing him.
I am at 9 but just to get everyone’s negative juices running and in honor of Old Timer’s Day how is it possible that Tex has morphed into Steve Kemp with the bat?
Goddamn. You just pulled Steve Kemp out of nowhere there.
Great reference.
Teix has definitely sucked so far this year with that .323 OBP and only 14 homers at almost the half way point.
People bash Arod but when he was 32 years old like Teixiera is, he was still having .950+ OPS seasons regularly.
10, because I won this weekend bitches!
Got to say 8.
At the risk of overusing the obvious quote, with every injury to a cornerstone of this team there has been someone who has really “stepped up” … Gardy goes down, Ibanez steps in. CC & Petitte injured, the other 3 starters hold down the fort.
Also, I spent the weekend at BBQs with in-laws who are Sox fans, and they are throughly disgustsed with their team. Like, blow the whole goddam thing up disgusted… This made me happy.
just an awesome tiume to cheer for the Yankees.
just an awesome tiume to cheer for the Yankees.
When isn’t?
Okay, the maybe late 60′s weren’t so hot, but I was just a kid then, and thought that Ross Moschitto and Roger Repoz would become the next Mantle and Maris and Joe Verbanic and/or Thad Tillotson would turn into Dick Radatz.
Ah, the joys of youth.
Did you wear any Yankees’ gear there??? No better sports enjoyment periods than when the Sawx are struggling. Their fans….priceless.
had my cap on all day, along with a shit eating grin… they were none too impressed.
They are obviously not die-hard Sox fans if they still think their team is sruggling. They probably heard the media talk about it in April and haven’t checked in since. You can bet once they are playing in the Wild Card game though they will start bragging about how they never gave up the faith.
After reading Robin Ventura’s comment on Jeter, I was wondering how many players actually dislike Jeter?
Only Chuck Knoblauch, right?
Garcia and Phelps against Rays without Longeria.
Hughes and Kuroda against the rival team.
Without home runs, Yanks wont win anything.
I would say 5 again.
Have you seen the Rays lineup without Longoria???
Hughes and Kuroda beat a 1st place team. Your point?
But they ARE hitting HRs AND winning games.
Home runs are a good thing boobie.
Having a hard time deciphering this comment.
But all I see is complaints about Home Runs, and a weird complaint that our two iffy pitchers get to go against a bad team, rather than have them up against the Rangers/Sox.
5 for this series? Or big picture? 5 big picture is almost indefensible unless you’re one of those weird college profs who gave tests where the curve was ~40%.
What did Ventura say?
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/articl.....8;c_id=mlb
He said Derek Jeter could hit third in any teams lineup because of how clutch he is. Nevermind the .599 OPS since May 3rd.
Ah. Thanks to the both of you.
The White Sox have the most disliked player in baseball.
Staying at 8. Since the Wacky Wednesday in which we lost both CC and Andy, we went 2-2 against a 1st place club, including the-stealing-defeat-from-the-jaws-of-victory Thursday night. I don’t care what anyone says, the team played to win that, but the manager let them down.
Warren looked horrible, but I’d like to think that was pure nerves. I’d be fine with giving him another look. I’d also be fine if Phelps started. Indifferent, just keep us in games.
Love what Kuroda, Nova and Hughes are doing in CC and Andy’s absence. They are each getting us into the 7th or 8th inning while not allowing many runs in. It appears that we’ll be able to weather the CC vacation just fine.
Hoping that Garcia can keep up his hot streak lately and get us into the 6th or 7th. He’s been surprising effective since being sent down to the bullpen. If he continues to be effective, I’d have no problem making him the 5th starter and keeping Phelps up at the long man.
I have no idea what we’re planning to do with Qualls, unless Wade is due for DL time or something. 33 appearances already??? Maybe he’s a bit winded. Hopefully he just needs rest. I’d trust the normal Wade over healthy Qualls.
Offensively, Cano, Grandy and Swisher continue to power the Yanks. A-Rod’s due to break out into one of his hot streaks. Tex needs to put it together with BABIP. Pretty atrocious. Luckily, his defense still saves runs. Wise has been a surprise lately.
On the farm, hoping Banuelos and Campos make it back soon. Betances had a pretty good outing in AA. Let’s see if he can put together a string of successful starts. Time for Sanchez to be moved up.
I just don’t see any need for any major moves right now. No need to sacrifice the farm for Hamels or Greinke or Garza.
1st place with a bullet still.
Gotta be a 10. No matter what happens-and it seems like something bad happens just about every other day-we are increasing our lead.
Even swept the Nats on the road so we are ready for the WS with them too. Stasburg and Harper will be gassed by then.
Meh. Too many injuries and bad contracts to vote a 10.
We signed Torres and Baez
Or Torrens. Whatever.
WHERE IS THE RAB UPDATE
Hopefully that keeps the IFA lovers at bay. Look forward to the post as to who these guys are.
6. Pitching is a concern. I’m not drinking the Hughes Kool-Aid. Minor league talent at the upper levels very over-rated. This team is too dependant on HR- can’t manufacture runs. No speed to speak of, especially without Gardner. The catching position is a black hole offensively. A-rod is toast. He can no longer bat in the 3-4 spot.
Wow. So what in the world would you give some other teams?
Yeesh. Why even follow baseball if you’re that damn negative?
And please, PLEASE, someone explain to me why hitting home runs is a bad thing. How many catchers across baseball aren’t black holes? 6-7?
What Hughes Kool-Aid? He’s had 2 straight fantastic starts after 1 bad one, which followed a strong stretch of 5 starts. 7 out of 8 not good enough for you?
You’re only valid concern is A-rod batting 3-4. He should be batting around 7th.
The Yankees are good.
