Game 102: Back on Track

(REUTERS/Adam Hunger)

The Yankees have an eight-game lead in the loss column in the AL East, and their closest competitor pretty much all season has been the Orioles. They’ve taken five of eight from Baltimore this year but lost two of three at Yankee Stadium back late-April/early-May. It’s only a matter of time before the O’s completely fade out of the picture, and the Yankees can expedite that process with a solid series this week. We all know they need it after winning just three of their last ten games. Here’s the starting nine…

SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
1B Mark Teixeira
2B Robinson Cano
DH Nick Swisher
LF Raul Ibanez
3B Eric Chavez
RH Ichiro Suzuki
Chris Stewart

RHP Freddy Garcia

Tonight’s game starts a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy.

Joba Chamberlain Update: As expected, Joba (elbow, ankle) will make another minor league rehab appearance for Double-A Trenton tomorrow. His 30-day rehab window expires one week from today.

  1. jjyank says:

Can’t wait to get Joba back. Looking forward to seeing the big guy grunting, farting, and striking guys out.

  2. The Real Greg says:

I suspect that we are not going to have many trades at this deadline approaches, from anybody. The sellers market and the need to keep key prospects has everybody in a chokehold.

As to this game, we haven’t seen him before, which in the last 6 times we faced a pitcher like this, we have lost.

I’m not confident about this game.

  3. Pat D says:

Great, Terrell Thomas re-injured his ACL.

  4. The Real Greg says:

You know what I just thought about. The Yankees are prioritizing defense in their search for infielders. Plus they are not looking for a heavy contract. Which brought me to an interesting thought.

    Omar Vizquel

It would be insane because Vizquel has no offensive value. But in terms of the requirements that the Yankees seem to be looking for, he might be it. Plus he can play short.

  5. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Fuck a losing a series against an irrelevant last place team. This series with the Orioles is WAY more important. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s crucial or vital considering the size of our lead, but it would be a very good thing to win a series against the closest team to us in our division.

Why have we been assuming all season that the O’s are just going to go back to being a pumpkin? They’re starting to remind of the Rays-we keep waiting for them to fall off and they never actually do.

    • The Real Greg says:

They have fallen off, just not to the degree that we’re used to seeing them. it’s been a gradual decline for them.

  6. your mom says:

Glad I don’t have to see Pedro freakin-Ciriaco. What a dog shit piece of crap he is.

    • MannyGee says:

fucking guy is hitting .350 since being called up, and 6 for 6 in SB attempts… un-real!

  7. DERP says:

Not gonna lie, I am pretty pumped to see Lew Ford back in the bigs. Always nice when guys make it back after long absences.

  8. Dan7877 says:

What does Martin have day off? He is hot from yesterday and was off when CC pitched.

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

Personal catchers, Stewart always catches CC and Freddy.

  9. Kramerica Industries says:

O’s and Mariners are not a difficult task, at least they shouldn’t be.

5-1 to finish the homestand, and that will be decent atonement for this weekend’s miserable series. Don’t let anyone get any closer.

  10. Dan7877 says:

What does Martin have day off? He is hot from yesterday and was off when CC pitched.

  11. jjyank says:

    Nice inning, Freddy.

  12. DERP says:

Good inning. LOL at Freddy already drenched.

    • jjyank says:

I have a lot of sympathy for the man. I, unfortunately, also posses the “it’s easy as hell to sweat” gene.

      • RI$P FTW says:

I might have the sweatiest back ever.

      • Kramerica Industries says:

        I hate it.

As someone who loves nice clothing, which often times is long sleeved and pants of some kind, my sweating tendencies make it damned near impossible to manage.

This also explains why I LOVE winter time.

  13. RetroRob says:

The Sweaty One in fine sweat form.

  14. RI$P FTW says:

Is there a good reason for not having Ichiro batting 9th?

  15. dkidd says:

    padilla sweats

    freddy glows

  16. DERP says:

MASN guys are hyping up Gonzalez because he has done well in his two road starts.

    • RetroRob says:

Yeah, all these numbers even the Yankee broadcasters are nonsense. The guy has a slightly more than zero history.

  17. How does it work if a team wants to trade for an injured player? Like is it allowed to trade a player on the DL? Cause Jed Lowrie would be a great guy for us at third but is currently on the DL.

  18. DERP says:

    Sweet inning

  19. Karl Krawfid says:

    Change up pitcher.

    Could be a long night.

    • The Real Greg says:

Exactly my thinking. We suck against changeups.

      • Tom says:

Yankees have a 0.12 run value against changeups (normalized to per 100)

League average is 0… so by “suck” I assume you mean average/slightly above average?

  20. DERP says:

  21. Kramerica Industries says:

    Excellent play by Cano.

  22. DERP says:

    Well done.

  23. Mike N says:

I love how that dude blew a bubble to celebrate getting doubled-up.

  24. Hummingbird S. says:

Cano needs to get going again..

  25. Robinson Tilapia says:

    Let’s do this.

Yup, way more meaningful a series than the Sox one. Nice to go into this with a cushion. Great time to leave these guys in the dust.

My Sox fan friend is sitting in Section 203 tonight.

I have an RFP (you non-profit nerds will know what that means) due in two days. You are not going to hear much from me tonight unless I get real stuck or tired of typing.

  26. DERP says:

    Home run by Chavez here.

  27. RetroRob says:

We needed that hit in your last AB, Raul.

  28. Nathan says:

Was Swish’s injury to his eyes? He’s looked terrible.

  29. DERP says:

The MASN guys are slurping Ibanez and Chavez for their leadership.

    • jjyank says:

I didn’t catch their names, is this the good duo or the bad duo you mentioned earlier?

    • RetroRob says:

Really? On a team like the Yankees? I mean, we can debate all we want about veteran leadership on young teams, but the Yankees are a team of all veterans. Sure, A-Rod, and Jeter and Tex and the youthful upstart Cano need that leadership!

  30. RetroRob says:

Kay talking so much he doesn’t see the umpire signal a balk, or amazingly hear the umpire call the balk.

  31. Mike N says:

  32. Zombiechez!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. DERP says:

  34. jjyank says:

    <3 Chavez.

  35. Get Phelps Up says:

Chavez! Nice job making them pay for the balk.

  36. RetroRob says:

    Cheap HR.

    Oh, wait…

  37. Cy Pettitte says:

    just lol.

  38. Kramerica Industries says:

    Wilson Betemit.

  39. DERP says:

That Betemit for Swisher deal isn’t looking so hot right now you guys.

  40. The Real Greg says:

Just as we see the light of the tunnel, a YS3 special.

  41. Nathan says:

New #5 starter please, thanks Cash.

    Oh wait, no money.

  42. Mike N says:

    Friggen Garcia.

  43. jjyank says:

Okay, totally random off topic question, but I have a conundrum. My mom works in ad sales for a magazine, and one of her clients is Nike. A perk of this is that once a year, she get’s a free pair of customized NikeID shoes. Since she doesn’t need a pair of Nike’s once a year, she let’s our family take turns designing our own. It’s my turn again, and since my previous NikeIDs were sneakers, I’m looking at running shoes instead.

I can’t decide what to get. I’ve heard that the “shocks” shoes are great, but useless when you inevitably blow the shocks out. Does anyone have a pair of Nike running shoes that they love? I’d appreciate any input.

    • Mike N says:

Go to a Nike store and let them do their gait analysis and recommend the right shoe for you. Then get that one.

      • jjyank says:

Hm. Is google is correct, there is not one anywhere near me. Like 27 miles away being the closest.

        • jjyank says:

Which is surprising, considering I live in a major city.

          • Betty Lizard says:

Oh jjyank, you’re a smart guy but you need shopping help. Go to nike.com, look for store finder at the bottom of the page and input your location. There are stores in the DC metro area and Georgetown.

            • jjyank says:

I don’t know why I didn’t go there first. I usually use google for everything, and it usually doesn’t let me down. But it did this time, apparently. Leave it to one of RAB’s resident females to assist me with shopping :P

  44. bobtaco says:

  45. Widget says:

Oh no Freddy gave up a homer. What will the main stream media say now about the Yankees?

  46. Cy Pettitte says:

@JonHeymanCBS #mariners turned down #yankees bid for brendan ryan. ichiro they can have, not brendan ryan.

untouchables in SEA: Felix, Brendan Ryan.

  47. DERP says:

    Heart Tex.

  48. jjyank says:

Tex has to be one of the best first basemen on those plays.

  49. DERP says:

I have a bad feeling here. Let’s just score 20 runs next inning.

  50. RetroRob says:

Girardi trying to make sure Martin never breaks out of his season-long slump.

  51. The Real Greg says:

I don’t know why Martin isn’t starting. Bad decision by Girardi, but there has to be some reason for it.

  52. wow says:

remind me why chris stewart is on this team again?

  53. Brian S. says:

Jeter just couldn’t take the walk.

  54. Jacob says:

I have an Idea, why don’t we have CC catch garcia if martin is not because I am honestly 100% serious that I would rather have CC hitting than stuart

  55. The Real Greg says:

Scouting report for the Yankees: Throw changeups and breaking balls.

    • Get Phelps Up says:

All teams struggle with changeups and breaking balls if the pitcher hits their spots.

      • The Real Greg says:

But they can’t tip their cap to the pitcher on here? I thought that was a bannable offense.

        • Get Phelps Up says:

What? You throw offspead pitches because good ones are hard to square up. Why else would you throw a pitch 80 MPH?

          • The Real Greg says:

No. I just on here you weren’t allowed to tip your cap to the opposing pitcher. Or so it seemed.

            • Get Phelps Up says:

Not tipping your cap. More like saying that it’s absurd to say that the Yankees are the only team that can’t hit offspeed pitches.

  56. Brian S. says:

You know, strikeouts don’t usually bother me that much but Granderson is getting ridiculous. I mean son of a bitch.

  57. Cuso says:

Girardi should just come out and admit that Stewart is the full-time catcher for both Garcia & Sabathia.

It’s insulting that when constantly asked he refuses to admit it. It’s a 60/40 split whether they want to admit it or not.

    • Mike N says:

I agree. While I usually appreciate Girardi’s reluctance to get into the details of his reasoning, this one is stupid. He could just say something like, “Our current determination is that Stewart works well with Garcia and Sabathia, and so as of now we will go with him when they pitch, but we always assess such matters on an ongoing basis and things could change in the future.” That would be suitably Girardiesque, yet end the pointless attention paid to the issue.

  58. stuart a says:

    granderson cannot even spell offspeed.
ajax is better then Grandy allready. better fielder, better baserunner, much cheaper, only thing grandy has is power.

signing grandy after next year for more then 2 years is insanity. it will just continue the insanity of long term deals for older, diminishing players.

the offense is on fire tonight, per usual……

  59. RetroRob says:

That’s some scary looking hair on Trump.

  60. Hummingbird S. says:

nice of freddy to keep putting the leadoff man on

  61. stuart a says:

girardi acts like the division is sowed up. his bullheadedness is astounding. chris stewart is a punch and judy hitter to the 3rd.

a bum pitcher like garcia picks his own catcher… insane

  62. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

That makes no sense, Paul. Why would he be more willing to risk a triple leading off the inning than with 2 outs?

  63. Heisenberg's Hat says:

Michael Kay thinks Curtis is a good defensive center fielder. That’s funny.

  64. DERP says:

Cano is dog shit sliding around in cum right now.

  65. Hummingbird S. says:

opponents have hit over .370 on Gonzalez’s changeup yet the Yankees keep swinging and missing..

  66. The Real Greg says:

Now the Yankees are swinging at everything because they don’t know what’s coming and where it land in the K-zone.

    They can’t handle his changeup.

    • Tom says:

They fouled off 3 fastballs right down the middle of the plate that inning.

      Cano hit one relatively well.

The issue is they are flailing at 2 strike changeups because for some strange reason they can’t hit a 92moh fastball early in the count. Sometimes the AB is more than just the outcome pitch, and the issue is missing pitches when you get them.

  67. Jacob says:

Okay Cano is starting to swing at everything again, stop it robbie

  68. Brian S. says:

Offense needs a good CLUTCH hitter. One that doesn’t just hit ALL THOSE BAD HOME RUNS.

  69. The Real Greg says:

All you need to beat the Yankees is a good changeup. Doubront last night and now Gonzalez tonight.

  70. Jacob says:

Thayt 27-13 against pitchers for the first time has to be a damn lie

  71. Erica says:

These Fightin’ Showalters really irk me.

  72. Erica says:

These Fightin’ Showalters really irk me.

  73. DERP says:

    another leadoff hitter

  74. Hummingbird S. says:

    bad pitcher and dumb

  75. DERP says:

Fuck Garcia. You can’t allow hits to Mark Reynolds.

  76. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

Why would you even try to kick the ball ???

  77. Heisenberg's Hat says:

Is that 8 hits now for Chief?

  78. Karl Krawfid says:

One day one of our idiot pitchers will look at the defensive positioning behind them.

  79. DERP says:

    Fuck Garcia

  80. Hummingbird S. says:

8 hits in 4.1 innings.. why is he starting for the NYY?

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

Let the luck machine work his magic. It won’t work all the times but at least he’s the temporary 5th starter. I hope.

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

Because he’s pitched plenty good enough for a fifth starter since he returned to the rotation?

    • Heisenberg's Hat says:

      Phelps time.

  81. So…while the Orioles are taking the lead John, Suzyn, and Mark are yucking along about Cliff Lee being available and bobby v’s quote about not being traded.

  82. wow says:

not this crap again. please don’t bend over to these idiots.

  83. Mike N says:

Fuuuck. I just went out to get some wine, and I return to this.

  84. DERP says:

    Fucking loser

  85. Widget says:

Are the really going to lose the orioles?

  86. Brian S. says:

    This team kind of sucks.

  87. Of course John and Suzyn want a sub .300OBP guy leading off.

  88. stuart a says:

garcia smirking after his kick save and the beauty.

down by 2, with this juggernaut offense the game may be over.

morons who have no clue attack someones spelling. if this was business correspondence I would check the spelling moron.

granderson is a 250 hitter, who does not steal bases, and is a avg fielder.

his 1 good quality is for a CF he has great power….

this offense is a sunday softball team, who thinks they are better then they are…..

  89. Athenian says:

Wow, this team is just awful right now. What happened in Oakland that is still in their system?

  90. DERP says:

A good case can be made for Phelps in place of Freddy now, right?

  91. Mike N says:

  92. Hummingbird S. says:

83 ERA+ on the season and still starting for the Yankees.. I wish I could suck at my job like that and not be fired.

  93. jjyank says:

Wait…so we’re dow by 2 in the 5th inning, and we got comments like “this team kind of sucks”, “fucking loser”, “are we really going to lose to the orioles”, and more.

Good Mo. The game is not over yet, and they have the biggest division lead in baseball. Unreal.

    • The Real Greg says:

I don’t care. I want to dominate teams and keep the comofort of a 10 game lead.

    • Jacob says:

It is the trolls man, stuart taught them all the gloom and doom chicken little the sky is falling bullshit

  94. Brian S. says:

Cashman can’t be serious about Brendan Ryan right? That’s his answer? That’s what this team needs?

  95. stuart a says:

ichiro can move up in the order when he shows he can get a hit with men on base…

ichiro hitting 8th or so is where he should be even on this softball team…..

  96. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

    Swisher injury really screwing us
Should have DLed him and brought up dickerson.

  97. The Real Greg says:

We have choked away the comfort of a 10 game lead in a week and a half.

They got complacent. And they are going to pay for it.

  98. Mike N says:

C’mon, Freddy! You gotta step off FIRST!

  99. Hoss says:

How did the O’s make it look so easy to score runners from 2nd and 3rd with 2 sac flies? Why does that “situational hitting” evade us?

  100. DERP says:

We are winning this game. I am just beyond pissed at Freddy. No one else.

  101. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

    Wow giving runs away
    Defensive catch my ass

  102. Ppiddy says:

See how seamless the Orioles scored with RISP this inning??????!!! Two Sacrifice flies. One moves runner to third. I mean, I NEVER see the Yankees play this kind of fundamental baseball. And they may have a big lead in the AL East but in the playoffs this will be A HUGE PROBLEM. HUGE!

  103. Kramerica Industries says:

Freddy was just dying to give up that fourth run.

  104. DERP says:

    We are scoring this inning.

  105. Nathan says:

    Sloppy game.

  106. Idk if anybody’s listening to the Orioles’ radio broadcast. It’s not terrible but the play-by-play guys voice is so dull and monotone I might fall asleep listening to it.

  107. wow says:

i’m done with freddy. give phelps a shot. quit digging yourself these unnecessary holes simply because “we’re so far ahead in the division.”

  108. DERP says:

That home run was A HUGE PROBLEM. HUGE!

  109. Erica says:

  110. Cy Pettitte says:

that’s some serious old man strength

  111. LORD MOTHA FUCKING VOLDEMORT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  112. jjyank says:

    Lord Voldemort rises again.

  113. Hummingbird S. says:

  114. The Real Greg says:

Why don’t we do that BEFORE the other team scores?

  115. Mike N says:

  116. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

Can any of the yankees hit a change up.
    Well ibanez can

  117. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Why didn’t Raul do that last night. Prick.

  118. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

YES is hyping an acccount called @BinderGirardi?

    Is this serious?

  119. DM says:

I guess Raul wanted to hit another “mirage” before he’s cut to make room for that DH upgrade that will be here by tomorrow.

  120. Hummingbird S. says:

    popup master ichiro

  121. Cy Pettitte says:

“don’t be calling Wikipedia to cheat”

    oh Paul.

  122. Nathan says:

    “Calling Wikipedia”…Paulie is awesome.

  123. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

So… I though Ichiro was supposed to be rejuvenated by getting out of Safeco and playing for a good team.

  124. Stewart knows he’s so useless he’s trying to bunt w/ two outs and no-one one.

    • Nathan says:

He should crowd the plate and just take one for the team. He’ll have a better chance of getting on base.

God I hate that drug commercial with the Dad hitting the kid’s TV…kid’s cracking voice makes me want to punch a random teen.

    • Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

I really know posada has brain farts but he couldnt be worsr than either martin or stewart and at least he could hit.

  125. Heisenberg's Hat says:

Ichiro pops up even more than Tex.

    • Cy Pettitte says:

it’s a slow transition, he’s going from ground balls to pop ups and soon he’ll be hitting monster HRs when he unleashes the Ichiro power.

  126. Athenian says:

Ok, it is bad enough that the offense is struggling but these string of pop up hitters is annoying.

  127. The Real Greg says:

Now if they are going to comeback and tie, they better win tonight. To quote Yoda. “Do or do not. There is no try.”

  128. Heisenberg's Hat says:

That’s not a good angle for my girl Meredith.
But it’s a good angle for her hooters.

  129. Nathan says:

Well at least Meredith is looking good tonight.

  130. FIPster Doofus says:

    Meredith = hot.

  131. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

    Meriadith very nice cans

    • Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

      Butter face though.

      • jjyank says:

If you think she’s a butter face, you should meet one of my college friends. Porn star caliber body. Ugliest face you’ve ever seen. She came on to me once, and without a bag to cover her face with handy, I had to decline.

Meredith is hot as hell compared to her.

        • captain kiwi says:

that… hurts to hear and is almost impossible to fathom :(

          • jjyank says:

It’s unfortunate. If I were to take a picture of her from the neck down, you might think she’s the hottest girl to ever walk to earth. It’s a shame. Especially because she’s a really nice person, would be the catch of the century if only her head didn’t resemble a horse.

        • Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

          Pics or GTFO

      • Jacob says:

        I love her face

  132. Tom says:

The Yankees #5 starter has given up 3ER in 6 innings. Sure not a great start, but what are people’s expectation for a #5 starter? (who’s only a 5th starter due to injury)

In the meantime the offense has put up 2 runs and 3 hits against the great Miguel Gonzalez.

Freddy’s an easy target but he’s not the issue tonight.

  133. Darren says:

For all you Jeter haters that’s exactly the kind of play that he ALWAYS makes, and makes look easy. That doesn’t show up in metrics ( I don’t think) but it’s part of what makes him a GREAT defensive shortstop in terms of consistency. Yes, GREAT.

I too hate the fact that he’s NEVER had any range to his left, and I know that’s one of the most important flashy parts of being a SS, but to me it’s very much mitigated by the rock solid defense he exhibits on the weird hops, balls in the hole (hey now), and routine plays that he rarely screws up.

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

Jeter is not a great defensive SS. Not even close.

    • Heisenberg's Hat says:

I’ve seen him botch plenty of routine plays.

    • Brian S. says:

I also hate that his leadership and intangibles are never included into these so called ‘metrics’. You know what I mean?

      • Darren says:

Assuming you’re being sarcastic, that’s not the argument I was making at all, and trying to make it seem like the intangibles argument is the same as a steady defense argument is stupid.

    • Jacob says:

+1 I would rather have a guy like jeter making all the routine plays than a guy making 26 errors a season with good range making crazy plays but botching the routine plays fuxk defensive metrics

    • Ppiddy says:

Jeter brings a lot more to the table than just his defense at SS (which is better than the critics say it is).

I’ll take him on my team any day.

But he probably won’t score from first (with no one out) this inning. Unless someone hits a HR.

  134. Jacob says:

    I <3 Meredith

  135. The Troll says:

How does the offense look thus far? Doesn’t seem like much from just observing the numbers . . .

  136. Heisenberg's Hat says:

Ichiro could hit 30 homers a year if he wanted to, but he knows those kill rallies.

  137. Brian S. says:

I’d say something sexual about Meredith but there are females in the game thread.

  138. DERP says:

Granderson’s strikeouts are A HUGE PROBLEM. HUGE!

  139. Kramerica Industries says:

    …and Kurtis K’s again.

  140. The Real Greg says:

    There’s the changeup again.

  141. Heisenberg's Hat says:

    Curtis makes me sadface.

  142. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

Granderson needs to move down in the order.

  143. Kramerica Industries says:

Geez, look at something a little more down the middle.

  144. Athenian says:

The left handed Tex – swings at anything.

  145. Karl Krawfid says:

    This shit is so embarassing.

    Keep sitting fastball!

  146. DERP says:

We’re just going to have to score against Luis Ayala. It’s come to that.

  147. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

  148. The Real Greg says:

The offspeed pitches and their sequences are killing the Yankees tonight.

  149. Athenian says:

This pitcher is going to win the Cy Young. Yankees don’t know how to hit him.

  150. DERP says:

  151. Heisenberg's Hat says:

Cano needs to get back to the MVP form.

  152. Brian S. says:

    Middle of the order lol

  153. The Real Greg says:

They can’t sit on the fastball because he can throw his offspeed pitches for strikes.

  154. Athenian says:

Pitchers can throw that slider to Cano all day and he will swing and miss every time.

  155. wow says:

    this is beyond annoying.

  156. your mom says:

    LOL the 2-5 hitters.

  157. Kramerica Industries says:

This team is a pile of dung right now.

Better start turning that around before things get too interesting.

    • The Real Greg says:

Too late. Things are already too interesting.

      • jjyank says:

The largest division lead is already “too interesting”? Greg maybe you should just fact check yourself before you get too depressed.

        • The Real Greg says:

I want our fucking 10 game lead back. Giving other teams hope is something that you can’t do. I want this team to dominate.

          • jjyank says:

“Dominating” is a relative term, Greg. I am perfectly satisfied with the largest division lead, and I consider that “dominating”.

      • Kramerica Industries says:

        Could be worse.

Could be the free-falling Texas Rangers right now. At least they have an improved Angels team and scorching A’s team on their backs right now.

Yankees still have a nice margin, albeit one that will slim once more if they can’t pull out the W tonight.

  158. The Troll says:

    Good inning!

  159. DERP says:

How many walks for Boone this inning?

  160. Heisenberg's Hat says:

    Let’s see some Chad Qualls.

  161. DERP says:

If Logan can’t get righty Betemit out, then he needs to just GTFO.

  162. your mom says:

Also LOL, the Phillies want the Oriole’s #3 prospect for Joe Blanton. I seriously hope the Phillies get stuck with all their free agents to be. They’re fucking nuts.

  163. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

    Brendan ryan ?
Still trying to figure that one out

  164. captain kiwi says:

i have no more shits to give after this weekend series with the sox. down by one run to the o’s, and i really couldn’t care less. win, lose, doesn’t matter today.

    • jjyank says:

Agreed. I’ll care in September if a team is within 5 games. Not before. Until then, I just enjoy the game.

  165. Nathan says:

As good as Cano is and as nice of a swing he has, he has some poor pitch recognition/pitch selection.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player swing and then wince in disgust and hang his head in the batter’s box as much as Cano.

  166. Mr. Pink says:

I don’t believe in this offense anymore. Grandy sure is piling up those strikeouts. Tex is up and down. And Cano is frustrating to watch.

  167. The Troll says:

So when do we address this shit fest as an actual problem and not, “the team is still 8 games ahead in the loss column” . . . ? Where’d the GD offense go?!

  168. Heisenberg's Hat says:

That’s what you’re supposed to do to Wilson Betemit.

  169. DERP says:

    Logan shouldn’t face Reynolds.

  170. Widget says:

Oh no the red sox took the lead and the Yankees are losing. Their lead over the last place team will drop to 9 games. They are going to choke out the division !11!!! MAIN STREAM MEDIA WINS AGAIN!@!!!!!!!!#234234325

    • The Real Greg says:

Dont you want to have a dominant team? That rolls over everybody?

      • Widget says:

You know what I care about most? Winning the World Series. Who cares how they look in the regular season. Ask the 2004 Red Sox fans, or last year’s Cardinal’s fans.

The 2004 and 2006 Yankees looked dominant, how’d those seasons turnout? Meanwhile the 2000 Yankees looked like shit, and look at how that turned out.

        • Kramerica Industries says:

That just proves that the best team almost never wins.

Cardinals have made some deal with the devil to have won two World Series in the past five years with teams that were lucky to even be in the playoffs. That 1982 drought should still be in existence.

          • Widget says:

that 06 team is one of the worst teams ever in any sport to win a title. Of course for my money the 87 Twins are the worst team ever to win a title.

    • The Troll says:

Ah fuck! Why’d you have to draw my attention to that?! That weekend was far too much to handle. I have to see them suffer. If they win, those losses will feel even worse.

    • Nathan says:

Meh…crappy game. Actually glad I have to go grab dinner.

I hope I come back in an hour and see they pulled it out. Not holding my breathe.

  171. DERP says:

I wasn’t expecting that. Nice work Boone.

  172. Cuso says:

Cano is getting into one of those swing-early-at-anything funks. He’s getting impatient.

You know Long is in his ear telling him to stop swinging at crap early – so he took the first pitch and made it look like he knew a ball was coming. And then swung at the same pitch that was ball 2. Overanxious.

And why overanxious? Because in the “other” ear, he’s got Borax telling him that with A-Rod out, this is the opportunity to carry the team and prove why he’s worth 10 years.

Does anyone really not think that Boras’ timing had everything to do with A-Rod goon on the shelf and to put the focus on Cano?

    • Heisenberg's Hat says:

Boras is such a jerk for throwing the pitch that broke Alex’s hand!

      • Cuso says:

I don’t know where you got that from. But okay.

I’ll give you a second opportunity to accuse me of something because I don’t want to retort if I’m interpreting your comment incorrectly.

  173. CUYanks says:

Doing the wave in a 1-run game where you’re losing?

  174. Kramerica Industries says:

It’s always poor form to see the Wave at Yankee Stadium.

  175. DERP says:

Morales with two home runs in one inning for the Angels.

  176. Heisenberg's Hat says:

Logan walking lousy lefthanded batter = LOL

  177. Kramerica Industries says:

    Guess I shouldn’t be surprised.

Stadium fans couldn’t be bothered to knock the ball away from Ryan Sweeney, either.

  178. Mr. Pink says:

And slowly we’re allowing our division rivals to climb back in contention. This team needs to stop being shitty against our own division.

    • The Real Greg says:

See what I mean? I’m not the only guy worried about this.

    • The Troll says:

I think we’re the only ones that actually fear a Red Sox run . . . If they keep winning and we keep losing . . . How is that out of the realm of possibility? I don’t get it . . .

      • TomH says:

It isn’t out of the realm of possibility at all. Anyone who says otherwise knows nothing about baseball (or its history).

        • CUYanks says:

It’s not that I specifically fear a Red Sox run or Orioles run, but the Yankees will have to win their share of games to avoid being caught by someone. After all, there’s a good chance at least one of the Orioles/Rays/Red Sox plays well above .500 ball the rest of the way out.

      • Mr. Pink says:

The only reason I worry is because they have a better all around offense that is not completely dependent on the home run. The Yankees seem helpless when they don’t get that three run homer.

        • The Troll says:

Yup. Exactly. The Red Sox is better than the Yankees. It’s obvious. Such a statement needs no defense. And they still haven’t had a full, complete lineup yet either.

  179. Athenian says:

So how many more games of this type will be permitted before the mantra of ” they have a solid lead” is no longer used as a justifiable excuse for poor performance?

    • jjyank says:

Nobody is using that as an excuse for the performance, but those people (including me) are saying that it’s not the end of the world considering the division lead. If the Orioles/Rays/Red Sox are 3 games back in September, I’ll be worried. But sure as shit not tonight.

      • Heisenberg's Hat says:

But losing a game to a division rival like that is really a two game swing.

      • Athenian says:

You may not have to wait for September for those teams to be 3 games back. Could happen by next week. They will get swept by the O’s and lose 2 of 3 to Seattle as they are currently playing.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting says:

          such an optimist

          • Athenian says:

um they have 3 wins in the past 8 days against teams they should have beaten. if not for home runs, they could have been shut out in 4 of the past 10.

            • Mike Axisa says:

And if they got one more bloop hit in each game, they could have won five more. Five of their last seven losses have been by one run.

              • Athenian says:

You would be right. But as with the playoffs when teams are upset in a 5 game series, luck cannot be a factor. In these games, they should not have been in that position. There AB’s were not quality, they assisted pitchers by chasing bad pitches, played poor defense, really just pedestrian effort. The HR’s only allowed them to appear to be in those games.

        • jjyank says:

And then I’ll worry. I can’t get all concerned about what MIGHT happen weeks from now given a fictional future narrative. All I can do regarding my level of concern for this team’s chances is what I know has happened so far. And I know this team has the biggest division lead in all of baseball, so I am not concerned for now. When a team is within 5 games, I may get concerned. But this is hardly the time to jump off the cliff.

          • Athenian says:

I completely get your point. Really was just questioning the “excuses” that are thrown around in these game threads, radio, tv, etc presented as explanations for going 2-9 over the past 11 games (includes tonight).

    • Need Pitching & Hitting says:

It’s a slump. Every team has slumps. The Yankees are in the fortunate position of being able to withstand a slump now because of the lead.

    • TomH says:

Well, it takes about 7-10 lousy performances to pretty much blow a lead, taking the Yankees, e.g., back to that period when everyone in the AL East was jammed up. So, the answer is, let’s say, 9 such games combined with a good run by the Rays or O’s. My fear, though, is Boston. Once they’re at full strength, and after their handling of the Yankees, they may well have a serious confidence boost.

      • Widget says:

Their starting pitching is at full strength and it sucks. Their offense was never a problem and the additions of Crawful and Lullsbury haven’t had any sort of impact.

  180. The Real Greg says:

Of course Boone Logan does that.

    There goes our division lead.

  181. Mike N says:

  182. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    fucking LNOGY

  183. Brian S. says:

Welp. This team will turn it around eventually. Maybe.

  184. Kramerica Industries says:

Boone Logan. Two outs, no one on, and then he implodes.

    Well done.

  185. DERP says:

What a POS. Way to ruin a good inning.

  186. Karl Krawfid says:

    Yankee pitchers and fastballs man.

  187. MannyGee says:

    fucking Markakis.

  188. Cy Pettitte says:

noBoone.jpg needs to make a comeback

  189. walking the lefty hitting 9th hitter…as a lefty who used to be a LOOGY…terrible.

This team isn’t going good right now…

  190. DERP says:

Boone Logan is such an ass.

  191. Athenian says:

    And that will do it.

  192. your mom says:

Back to being a LNOGY. Walking Quintannillaana?

  193. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

Does every guy our pen walks score or what?
Anyone got the stats for that.

  194. Widget says:

Yankees look like they are going to lose a game to the team in 2nd place. Interesting, the Rangers look like the same thing is going to happen to them. I wonder if Rangers fans are sorts of FREAKING OUT!!!!!!!!!!!

  195. stuart a says:

losing baseball. pen making mistakes late in games(3 in a row) and zero clutch hitting.

yankee announcers and others act like they are watching good baseball. a team that cannot score without hitting a homerun and giving up runs late is a formula for a 3 game losing streak..

logan’s high water mark was early in the season he is officially back to being Boone Logan. walks quintanilla, nice move………………

  196. wow says:

at this point I don’t really expect us to come back from this. Not with the way we’ve been playing. Just weakness all around.

  197. Mike N says:

I still feel like we’re gonna win this game.

  198. DERP says:

Fuck Teixeira you dumb fucking POS

  199. Mr. Pink says:

This team really needed a trade for an impact guy whether it was Zack Greinke or Chase Headley. But alas we got a washed up 38 year old Ichiro. This team really needs a shot in the arm.

    • FIPster Doofus says:

They absolutely need a bat. Ichiro was a fine speed/defense pickup, but he can’t hit for shit.

      • Kramerica Industries says:

        Well, that’s shocking isn’t it?

This is why intangible talk like “he’s going to be rejuvenated going into a playoff race” kind of shit is to be ignored. Sometimes, once you suck, you suck. And, with the bat, Ichiro sucks…ASS.

        • FIPster Doofus says:

Agreed. Hearing the announcers and analysts worship him every day is annoying as hell. He’s an awful offensive player these days.

  200. Mike N says:

    Um, maybe?

Two-out RBIs are so fucking painful.

  201. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

I know the word “unacceptable” gets thrown around here a lot but giving up multiple hits to JJ Hardy and Mark Reynolds is pretty fucking bad.

  202. Cuso says:

This is annoying. We need more outbursts like Friday. Too many close games lately.

Close games are okay and interesting. But I’d like to see less of them for a little bit.

    As I say that….5-2. F@ck! That’s not what I meant’

  203. stuart a says:

main difference between thsi game and the ranger game is the ANgels are much better then the Orioles. also I can care less about the rangers my concern is the yankees, who are not playing good at all.

lucky binder boy gave our 185 hitting catcher(on base 4 times last night) the day off to play yogi Stewart.

5 to 2… great game…grandy with 124 k’s, but hey give him a 5 year extension………….yankee fans are insane with these long term deals for old guys who would not get remotely that type of money from anyone else….

GREAT EFFORT. now the yansk arent desperate angle by the announcers. nice….BULLSHIT BUT predicatable……

  204. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

See they score on ground balls to right
    No mick kellaher

  205. Widget says:

    Phelps Phelps Phelps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  206. Karl Krawfid says:

    This team is trash atm.

  207. wow says:

yep. there it is. what’s it going to take for this team to wake up? Seriously.

  208. Mr. Pink says:

Other teams make it look so easy. A guy doubles, the next guy singles him in. For the Yankees it’s : a guy doubles, pop out, line out, strikeout.

    • Get Phelps Up says:

I hear the Yankees are the only team that’s not hitting 1.00 with RISP this season.

  209. stuart a says:

as stated if the yanks do not make a big move they are going no where.

they will not make that big move for an athletic young position player and therefore they are winning zilch this year………….

  210. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

Qualls up as girardi raises the white flag.

  211. I’m leaving for the bus…the crazies have took over the looney bin.

  212. your mom says:

    This team lacks grittiness.

  213. DERP says:

Put this fat bitch away Phelps.

  214. stuart a says:

they need arod to bookend ichiro in clutchness with RISP.

a team of old, slow, unclutch, overpaid slackers…..

  215. DT says:

Didn’t think missing arod would make the offense this bad.

  216. Mr. Pink says:

Even though we’re in first place by 8 games it feels like so much less just because Boston, Tampa, and Balitimore have been playing so well and there’s not a lot of room for error.

    • Mike Axisa says:

The Orioles have lost five of their last seven games.

The Red Sox have lost six of their last nine games.

The Rays are the only one playing well, and they’re 4-4 in their last eight.

The Yankees have gained 1.5 games in the standings over the last seven days.

      • Widget says:

        damn facts!!!!!!!!

      • CUYanks says:

I’m not sure how you mean this. On July 23 the Yankees were up 7, 9, 9.5, 10.5 on the division. Today they are up 7.5, 7.5, 9, 9.5 on them. I understand you’re point that it’s not like the other teams are on fire or catching up much, but you might be exaggerating here, as the only team we’ve “gained” on have been the Orioles by 0.5 game (and we’ve lost 1.5, 1, and 0.5 to the Rays, Sox, and Jays respectively.) This is not of course including today, where the results are TBD.

  217. The Troll says:

Well . . . after the A’s series and this past weekend, I really can’t stick around for another game where the offense has gone MIA. The sting of losing to Pedro Ciriaco is still too fresh. G’night folks.

  218. DERP says:

They are doing us a favor by keeping this guy in.

  219. Widget says:

It’s not A-rod they miss, it’s Gardner. Sucks he won’t be back this year. His speed and defense are sorely missed.

    • Heisenberg's Hat says:

      Gardner’s not really that good.

      • Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Gardner would probably be the 6th best offensive player in this lineup

      • Widget says:

Plays elite defense, gets on base, can steal, sees a lot of pitches. Nope, Yankees don’t need that, he’s worthless if he can’t homer.

        • Heisenberg's Hat says:

He’s a good player, but he’s not this great missing ingredient everyone keeps talking about. I didn’t see anyone saying the Yanks don’t need him, but to hear some people talk you’d think he was going to the hall of fame.

  220. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

Is tippy martinez still on the mound killing our offense

  221. DERP says:

This pitcher sucks ass. Unfortunate that this offense can’t hit him.

  222. Cy Pettitte says:

this team is seriously coasting, Cashman needs to give them a swift kick in the ass

    • Widget says:

They need another Cervelli homer in atlanta moment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cerveli is the KEY!!!!!!!!!

  223. DERP says:

I love Chavez. Favorite player this year.

  224. Get Phelps Up says:

    Damn, that was CRUSHED!

    • Mike N says:

Srsly. That was so obviously gone on impact. Even the sound was just brutal crushitude.

  225. Mike N says:

  226. jjyank says:

Wow that was on hell of a bomb. Longest Chavez homer as a Yankee yet? I dunno, but he straight murdered that.

  227. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

    Brendan Ryan ???

  228. MannyGee says:

sweet, Chavez just hit a homer, does this mean we don’t lose the division lead tonight now?

  229. DERP says:

I’m not sure how anyone could dislike Eric Chavez.

  230. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

    Cheap YS3 HRs :)

  231. wow says:

    Did anyone hear Sterling’s call?

  237. jjyank says:

Any radio listeners, what was Sterlings home run call?

  238. sangreal says:

    anyone got Sterling’s call?

  239. Mike N says:

  241. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

    Ichi bomb

  242. Athenian says:

Showalter doing his best Joe G imitation by leaving a pitcher in too long. Appears that line of thinking must be a Yankees organization thing. HA!

  243. your mom says:

The next 6 batters are 1-17 so far, something’s got to give right???

  244. MannyGee says:

“The Yankees Rising Sun says ‘sianara’….

yah that might be the worst HR call Sterling has every thrown out there…

  245. wow says:

  246. Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

I guess it’s true, Ichiro can homer if he wants to, he just usually chooses to have a higher batting average. This time, it suddenly dawned on him that hitting home runs is better, so he did that.

  247. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

    Martin hitting the ball hard
    He should play everyday again

  248. DERP says:

LOL at Buck. Ibanez/Chavez/Ichiro and he doesn’t bring in the lefty.

  249. your mom says:

If we were in Boston’s position(10 games out), I wonder what moves Cashman would be making right now.

    • FIPster Doofus says:

Probably buying something. Boston’s not 10 games out of a playoff spot.

    • MannyGee says:

if we were 10 games out and sitting at .500???

trading Cano, Kuroda and Granderson for some good to great young pitching, because I would think we would be realists and know that we’re pretty much done.

Also, considering current company thinks we’re done because we’re losing to Baltimore, I would assume the current ‘fan base’ would be OK with blowing shit up at 10 games back.

  250. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Teixeira out of the game = ruh roh

  251. Widget says:

why did Tex come out of the game?

  256. Mike N says:

    I really want this game.

Cano is now 0 for 9 since Boras mentioned that 10 year contract.

Phelps has a 10 K/9, start him please.

Boras can say whatever he wants only the fat, crew cut steinny would be dumb enough to give Cano 10 years. Even he is not that dumb I think.

let cano check out the market for his services if he wants. he is a very good hitter for a 2b but far from a great or a HOF guy….
