Game 102: Back on Track

Monday Trade Deadline Open Thread
Yankees made offer for Brendan Ryan

The Yankees have an eight-game lead in the loss column in the AL East, and their closest competitor pretty much all season has been the Orioles. They’ve taken five of eight from Baltimore this year but lost two of three at Yankee Stadium back late-April/early-May. It’s only a matter of time before the O’s completely fade out of the picture, and the Yankees can expedite that process with a solid series this week. We all know they need it after winning just three of their last ten games. Here’s the starting nine…

SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
1B Mark Teixeira
2B Robinson Cano
DH Nick Swisher
LF Raul Ibanez
3B Eric Chavez
RH Ichiro Suzuki
Chris Stewart

RHP Freddy Garcia

Tonight’s game starts a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy.

Joba Chamberlain Update: As expected, Joba (elbow, ankle) will make another minor league rehab appearance for Double-A Trenton tomorrow. His 30-day rehab window expires one week from today.

  • jjyank

Can’t wait to get Joba back. Looking forward to seeing the big guy grunting, farting, and striking guys out.

    • RI$P FTW

I heard he pulled a ‘George Brett’ the other day. It’s a good sign.

  • The Real Greg

I suspect that we are not going to have many trades at this deadline approaches, from anybody. The sellers market and the need to keep key prospects has everybody in a chokehold.

As to this game, we haven’t seen him before, which in the last 6 times we faced a pitcher like this, we have lost.

I’m not confident about this game.

    • Get Phelps Up

We won the last game of the Seattle series which was started by a pitcher we’ve never seen.

      • The Real Greg

        Ah. My bad. Sorry.

      • RI$P FTW

In Greg’s defense, I’m pretty sure YES was saying something different the other day.

  • Pat D

Great, Terrell Thomas re-injured his ACL.

  • The Real Greg

You know what I just thought about. The Yankees are prioritizing defense in their search for infielders. Plus they are not looking for a heavy contract. Which brought me to an interesting thought.

    Omar Vizquel

It would be insane because Vizquel has no offensive value. But in terms of the requirements that the Yankees seem to be looking for, he might be it. Plus he can play short.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

What does he do that Ramiro Pena does not at this point?

      • The Real Greg

Fair enough, I forgot about Pena.

Then why did the news come out saying that the Yankees were looking for defense in their infield?

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I’m sure they’re looking for defense with some level of offensive competency.

          • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

            So “not” Brendan Ryan, then.

  • Rocky Road Redemption

Fuck a losing a series against an irrelevant last place team. This series with the Orioles is WAY more important. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s crucial or vital considering the size of our lead, but it would be a very good thing to win a series against the closest team to us in our division.

Why have we been assuming all season that the O’s are just going to go back to being a pumpkin? They’re starting to remind of the Rays-we keep waiting for them to fall off and they never actually do.

    • The Real Greg

They have fallen off, just not to the degree that we’re used to seeing them. it’s been a gradual decline for them.

  • your mom

Glad I don’t have to see Pedro freakin-Ciriaco. What a dog shit piece of crap he is.

    • MannyGee

fucking guy is hitting .350 since being called up, and 6 for 6 in SB attempts… un-real!

  • DERP

Not gonna lie, I am pretty pumped to see Lew Ford back in the bigs. Always nice when guys make it back after long absences.

  • http://none Dan7877

What does Martin have day off? He is hot from yesterday and was off when CC pitched.
    ?!?

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

Personal catchers, Stewart always catches CC and Freddy.

  • Kramerica Industries

O’s and Mariners are not a difficult task, at least they shouldn’t be.

5-1 to finish the homestand, and that will be decent atonement for this weekend’s miserable series. Don’t let anyone get any closer.

  • http://none Dan7877

What does Martin have day off? He is hot from yesterday and was off when CC pitched.

  • jjyank

    SWEAT MOAR!

    Nice inning, Freddy.

  • DERP

Good inning. LOL at Freddy already drenched.

    • jjyank

I have a lot of sympathy for the man. I, unfortunately, also posses the “it’s easy as hell to sweat” gene.

      • RI$P FTW

I might have the sweatiest back ever.

      • Kramerica Industries

        I hate it.

As someone who loves nice clothing, which often times is long sleeved and pants of some kind, my sweating tendencies make it damned near impossible to manage.

This also explains why I LOVE winter time.

  • RetroRob

The Sweaty One in fine sweat form.

  • RI$P FTW

Is there a good reason for not having Ichiro batting 9th?

    • jjyank

Maybe. But I do want to see him 9th as well, essentially taking Brett Gardner’s spot in the lineup.

      • RI$P FTW

        I agree.

      • RetroRob

I don’t want to see two pitches, two outs with Ichiro and Jeter batting back-to-back. Martin will take pitches, help drive up pitch counts, and allow Ichiro to steal when he does get on base.

Worrying about Ichiro batting 8th or 9th is kind of pointless, but if I had my preference, I’d put him 8th.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

      umm…then there’s uh…Oh also…um…

  • dkidd

    padilla sweats

    freddy glows

  • DERP

MASN guys are hyping up Gonzalez because he has done well in his two road starts.

    • RetroRob

Yeah, all these numbers even the Yankee broadcasters are nonsense. The guy has a slightly more than zero history.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

How does it work if a team wants to trade for an injured player? Like is it allowed to trade a player on the DL? Cause Jed Lowrie would be a great guy for us at third but is currently on the DL.

    • DERP

It is allowed. Jake Peavy was on the DL when he was traded.

  • DERP

    Sweet inning

  • Karl Krawfid

    Change up pitcher.

    Could be a long night.

    • The Real Greg

Exactly my thinking. We suck against changeups.

      • Tom

Yankees have a 0.12 run value against changeups (normalized to per 100)

League average is 0… so by “suck” I assume you mean average/slightly above average?

  • DERP

    tits

  • Kramerica Industries

    Excellent play by Cano.

  • DERP

    Well done.

  • Mike N

I love how that dude blew a bubble to celebrate getting doubled-up.

  • Hummingbird S.

Cano needs to get going again..

    • DERP

NICE OF YOU TO SHOW UP

  • Robinson Tilapia

    Let’s do this.

Yup, way more meaningful a series than the Sox one. Nice to go into this with a cushion. Great time to leave these guys in the dust.

My Sox fan friend is sitting in Section 203 tonight.

I have an RFP (you non-profit nerds will know what that means) due in two days. You are not going to hear much from me tonight unless I get real stuck or tired of typing.

    • jjyank

Wait…so if you get tired of typing, you’d come to RAB so you can…type?

      • Mike N

        Hahahahah.

  • DERP

    Home run by Chavez here.

  • RetroRob

We needed that hit in your last AB, Raul.

  • Nathan

Was Swish’s injury to his eyes? He’s looked terrible.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      He had two hits yesterday.

      • RI$P FTW

        But how many walks???

  • DERP

The MASN guys are slurping Ibanez and Chavez for their leadership.

    • jjyank

I didn’t catch their names, is this the good duo or the bad duo you mentioned earlier?

      • DERP

It’s Thorne and Bordick. I like Thorne, but he is not for everyone. Bordick isn’t great. He is definitely worse than Palmer.

        • jjyank

Just out of curiosity, which is which? Is Thorne the play-by-play guy?

          • DERP

            Thorne is the PBP.

            • jjyank

              Got ya. Thanks.

    • RetroRob

Really? On a team like the Yankees? I mean, we can debate all we want about veteran leadership on young teams, but the Yankees are a team of all veterans. Sure, A-Rod, and Jeter and Tex and the youthful upstart Cano need that leadership!

  • RetroRob

Kay talking so much he doesn’t see the umpire signal a balk, or amazingly hear the umpire call the balk.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

      Same goes for Sterling.

  • Mike N

    YESSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!

  • Kramerica Industries

    Hahah.

    Wilson Betemit.

    Hahahahahah.

  • DERP

That Betemit for Swisher deal isn’t looking so hot right now you guys.

    • Nathan

      Today? No.

      Historically? Yes.

      • RI$P FTW

        Literal.

    • jjyank

      Yes it is.

  • The Real Greg

Just as we see the light of the tunnel, a YS3 special.

  • Nathan

New #5 starter please, thanks Cash.

    Oh wait, no money.

  • Mike N

    Friggen Garcia.

  • jjyank

Okay, totally random off topic question, but I have a conundrum. My mom works in ad sales for a magazine, and one of her clients is Nike. A perk of this is that once a year, she get’s a free pair of customized NikeID shoes. Since she doesn’t need a pair of Nike’s once a year, she let’s our family take turns designing our own. It’s my turn again, and since my previous NikeIDs were sneakers, I’m looking at running shoes instead.

I can’t decide what to get. I’ve heard that the “shocks” shoes are great, but useless when you inevitably blow the shocks out. Does anyone have a pair of Nike running shoes that they love? I’d appreciate any input.

    • Mike N

Go to a Nike store and let them do their gait analysis and recommend the right shoe for you. Then get that one.

      • jjyank

Hm. Is google is correct, there is not one anywhere near me. Like 27 miles away being the closest.

        • jjyank

Which is surprising, considering I live in a major city.

          • Betty Lizard

Oh jjyank, you’re a smart guy but you need shopping help. Go to nike.com, look for store finder at the bottom of the page and input your location. There are stores in the DC metro area and Georgetown.

            • jjyank

I don’t know why I didn’t go there first. I usually use google for everything, and it usually doesn’t let me down. But it did this time, apparently. Leave it to one of RAB’s resident females to assist me with shopping :P

  • bobtaco

    Phelps!

  • Widget

Oh no Freddy gave up a homer. What will the main stream media say now about the Yankees?

  • Cy Pettitte

@JonHeymanCBS #mariners turned down #yankees bid for brendan ryan. ichiro they can have, not brendan ryan.

untouchables in SEA: Felix, Brendan Ryan.

    • The Real Greg

I wouldn’t want him anyway. Hitting .195 this year.

    • Jacob

good ramiro pena is better with the bat than ryan and ryan is a SS

  • DERP

    Heart Tex.

  • jjyank

Tex has to be one of the best first basemen on those plays.

  • DERP

I have a bad feeling here. Let’s just score 20 runs next inning.

    • RetroRob

That means Chad Qualls will come in, which means they’ll need more.

  • RetroRob

Girardi trying to make sure Martin never breaks out of his season-long slump.

  • The Real Greg

I don’t know why Martin isn’t starting. Bad decision by Girardi, but there has to be some reason for it.

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

It’s because Stewart isn’t Garcia’s personal catcher the same way he isn’t CC’s personal catcher.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Stewart catches the larger, sweater starters (CC and Freddy)

  • wow

remind me why chris stewart is on this team again?

    • The Real Greg

Because Francisco Cervelli isn’t any better and Romine was hurt?

      • Jacob

Cervelli is very much an upgrade

        • The Real Greg

          Were you here last year?

          • RetroRob

Have you been here this year?

Cervelli can at least tack on another 50 pts. in OBP.

            • The Real Greg

And will continuously throw balls into center field. Even Stewart hasn’t been doing that.

        • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

No he’s not. I love him too.

But he’s not an upgrade. Everyone has rose-colored glasses about Frankie. He’s much worse defensively.

He just happens to be exuberant which tricks fans into thinking he’s good.

      • wow

nah, pretty sure Cervelli is very much an upgrade.

      • RI$P FTW

And Montero was traded. Posada quit.

  • Brian S.

Jeter just couldn’t take the walk.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

He’s not the player he used to be…he’s still decent though. BTW, you asked yesterday: Yes, that is my blog that’s linked to my name. fair warning if you go back into it…it’s kind of all over the place.

      • Brian S.

How are you still alive after doing all those drugs?

        • Brian S.

I mean I’m glad that you are I have just never heard of some of the things I saw.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Haha, dude that’s not me! Have you never been on Tumblr? Almost none of the stuff on my blog is original, apart for some really depressing one-liners every so often, most of it is reblogged from other blogs I follow that I think is cool. Like that guy who did a shit ton of drugs and drew pictures of himself.

          • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for the mind expansion of using controlled substances in a controlled setting, but I would never, under any circumstance try Crystal Meth, for any reason.

            • Brian S.

Oh okay. I’m glad you weren’t inhaling computer duster.

Nope, the only time I messed with NO2 was out of a balloon. Feels awesome, but it doesn’t last long and destroys your brain.

      • Heisenberg’s Hat

Decent except he plays terrible defense?

  • Jacob

I have an Idea, why don’t we have CC catch garcia if martin is not because I am honestly 100% serious that I would rather have CC hitting than stuart

  • The Real Greg

Scouting report for the Yankees: Throw changeups and breaking balls.

    • Get Phelps Up

All teams struggle with changeups and breaking balls if the pitcher hits their spots.

      • The Real Greg

But they can’t tip their cap to the pitcher on here? I thought that was a bannable offense.

        • Get Phelps Up

What? You throw offspead pitches because good ones are hard to square up. Why else would you throw a pitch 80 MPH?

          • The Real Greg

No. I just on here you weren’t allowed to tip your cap to the opposing pitcher. Or so it seemed.

            • Get Phelps Up

Not tipping your cap. More like saying that it’s absurd to say that the Yankees are the only team that can’t hit offspeed pitches.

  • Brian S.

You know, strikeouts don’t usually bother me that much but Granderson is getting ridiculous. I mean son of a bitch.

    • Heisenberg’s Hat

Someone should tell Curtis you don’t HAVE to swing at everything.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Girardi should just come out and admit that Stewart is the full-time catcher for both Garcia & Sabathia.

It’s insulting that when constantly asked he refuses to admit it. It’s a 60/40 split whether they want to admit it or not.

    • Mike N

I agree. While I usually appreciate Girardi’s reluctance to get into the details of his reasoning, this one is stupid. He could just say something like, “Our current determination is that Stewart works well with Garcia and Sabathia, and so as of now we will go with him when they pitch, but we always assess such matters on an ongoing basis and things could change in the future.” That would be suitably Girardiesque, yet end the pointless attention paid to the issue.

  • stuart a

    granderson cannot even spell offspeed.
ajax is better then Grandy allready. better fielder, better baserunner, much cheaper, only thing grandy has is power.

signing grandy after next year for more then 2 years is insanity. it will just continue the insanity of long term deals for older, diminishing players.

the offense is on fire tonight, per usual……

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

stuart a cannot even spell already

    • Get Phelps Up

    • The Real Greg

it’s okay. It’s DP night for the Orioles.

  • stuart a

girardi acts like the division is sowed up. his bullheadedness is astounding. chris stewart is a punch and judy hitter to the 3rd.

a bum pitcher like garcia picks his own catcher… insane

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

      or sewed

    • Get Phelps Up

      Ike Davis should manage.

    • jjyank

Now that A-Rod is on the DL, I love that Stewart is your new “punch and judy”.

You know what you sound like stewie?

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQzkDzLw_gA

  • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

That makes no sense, Paul. Why would he be more willing to risk a triple leading off the inning than with 2 outs?

    • The Real Greg

      Yeah I questioned that too.

    • Jacob

Probably because even Raul Ibanez could have made that play

  • Heisenberg’s Hat

Michael Kay thinks Curtis is a good defensive center fielder. That’s funny.

    • jjyank

You have a great handle by the way. Just thought I’d throw that out there.

      • Heisenberg’s Hat

        Thanks jj!

    • Heisenberg’s Hat

And Jeter, and Granderson, and Ibanez, and Swisher, etc.

    • VT Yankee Fan

      Stay classy.

  • Hummingbird S.

opponents have hit over .370 on Gonzalez’s changeup yet the Yankees keep swinging and missing..

    • The Real Greg

So what does that tell you? They can’t hit changeups.

      • Heisenberg’s Hat

Jamey Moyer would befuddle this team.

      • RetroRob

…or don’t draw conclusions from 33 innings pitched in the majors.

  • The Real Greg

Now the Yankees are swinging at everything because they don’t know what’s coming and where it land in the K-zone.

    They can’t handle his changeup.

    • Tom

They fouled off 3 fastballs right down the middle of the plate that inning.

      Cano hit one relatively well.

The issue is they are flailing at 2 strike changeups because for some strange reason they can’t hit a 92moh fastball early in the count. Sometimes the AB is more than just the outcome pitch, and the issue is missing pitches when you get them.

  • Jacob

Okay Cano is starting to swing at everything again, stop it robbie

  • Brian S.

Offense needs a good CLUTCH hitter. One that doesn’t just hit ALL THOSE BAD HOME RUNS.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Yeah!!! We need a gritty Nick Punto type bat!!!!

  • The Real Greg

All you need to beat the Yankees is a good changeup. Doubront last night and now Gonzalez tonight.

        • jjyank

The fact that you call it a “decision” means you don’t know what you’re talking about.

What was the Bobby V quote? I must have missed that.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

The media asked if he had heard anything about the trade deadline from the front office, and he responded “Yes, I can assure you I’m not going to be traded.” or something to that sort.

        • jjyank

Lame. Everyone knows only Ozzie Guillen get’s traded, and then possibly fired the next year.

  • wow

not this crap again. please don’t bend over to these idiots.

Of course John and Suzyn want a sub .300OBP guy leading off.

    • Heisenberg’s Hat

      Are they talking about Ichiro?

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Yep, John’s line up would be:
        Ichiro
        Jeter
        Cano
        Tex
        Swish
fill in the last three depending on the pitcher.

        • Heisenberg’s Hat

But Ichiro isn’t good anymore. I don’t get it. This is why I can’t listen to the radio.

  • stuart a

garcia smirking after his kick save and the beauty.

down by 2, with this juggernaut offense the game may be over.

morons who have no clue attack someones spelling. if this was business correspondence I would check the spelling moron.

granderson is a 250 hitter, who does not steal bases, and is a avg fielder.

his 1 good quality is for a CF he has great power….

this offense is a sunday softball team, who thinks they are better then they are…..

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

      they need more ARod

    • vin

“morons who have no clue attack someones spelling. if this was business correspondence I would check the spelling moron.”

      Don’t forget about grammar too!

DAMNIT STUART GO THE FUCK AWAY YOU ANNOYING FUCKING TROLL

    • Get Phelps Up

      Ike Davis will fix everything.

  • Athenian

Wow, this team is just awful right now. What happened in Oakland that is still in their system?

    • Kramerica Industries

The west coast trip mindfucked this entire team.

      • Athenian

I think Buck is mindfucking them right now.

  • DERP

A good case can be made for Phelps in place of Freddy now, right?

    • Jacob

Could have been made when freddy was placed in the rotation

  • Mike N

    Gaaah!

  • Hummingbird S.

83 ERA+ on the season and still starting for the Yankees.. I wish I could suck at my job like that and not be fired.

  • jjyank

Wait…so we’re dow by 2 in the 5th inning, and we got comments like “this team kind of sucks”, “fucking loser”, “are we really going to lose to the orioles”, and more.

Good Mo. The game is not over yet, and they have the biggest division lead in baseball. Unreal.

    • The Real Greg

I don’t care. I want to dominate teams and keep the comofort of a 10 game lead.

    • Jacob

It is the trolls man, stuart taught them all the gloom and doom chicken little the sky is falling bullshit

  • Brian S.

Cashman can’t be serious about Brendan Ryan right? That’s his answer? That’s what this team needs?

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

He must be listening to the people who don’t like us scoring to many runs via the homer, and would rather guys who are “gritty” or some such bullshit.

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

I hear he has great framing skills.

  • stuart a

ichiro can move up in the order when he shows he can get a hit with men on base…

ichiro hitting 8th or so is where he should be even on this softball team…..

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

      this offense sucks without ARod….

    • Get Phelps Up

      We need Ike Davis.

    • Heisenberg’s Hat

Wouldn’t a softball team be a team that scored a lot of runs? You should use that line when the team’s scoring a lot.

  • Ichy and Irok hello to number 28

    Swisher injury really screwing us
Should have DLed him and brought up dickerson.

  • The Real Greg

We have choked away the comfort of a 10 game lead in a week and a half.

They got complacent. And they are going to pay for it.

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

We lost 10 games in the standings?

    • Erica

You’re gonna make ‘em pay, aren’t ya?

  • Mike N

C’mon, Freddy! You gotta step off FIRST!

  • Hoss

How did the O’s make it look so easy to score runners from 2nd and 3rd with 2 sac flies? Why does that “situational hitting” evade us?

  • DERP

We are winning this game. I am just beyond pissed at Freddy. No one else.

  • Ichy and Irok hello to number 28

    Wow giving runs away
    Defensive catch my ass

  • Ppiddy

See how seamless the Orioles scored with RISP this inning??????!!! Two Sacrifice flies. One moves runner to third. I mean, I NEVER see the Yankees play this kind of fundamental baseball. And they may have a big lead in the AL East but in the playoffs this will be A HUGE PROBLEM. HUGE!

    • Mike N

      hahahahahahah

    • jjyank

If they have such a big lead, maybe it isn’t such a “HUGE. HUGE!” problem as you say.

  • Kramerica Industries

Freddy was just dying to give up that fourth run.

  • DERP

    We are scoring this inning.

    • Heisenberg’s Hat

      You were right!

  • Nathan

    Sloppy game.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Idk if anybody’s listening to the Orioles’ radio broadcast. It’s not terrible but the play-by-play guys voice is so dull and monotone I might fall asleep listening to it.

    • Ichy and Irok hello to number 28

Gary thorn is one of the best

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

hahaha, he definitely just redeemed himself by terribly rolling the R on Raul’s name. That was awesome.

    • jjyank

I’m watching it, since MLB.TV blacks me out because I’m in market. He’s a little monotone, but not bad otherwise.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

His call on Raul’s homer lacked any kind of emphasis, positive or negative lol.

        • jjyank

Better than negative. There are plenty of announcers out there that call a homer by the opposing player like this:

“high…..deep…*pause*….1-0 yankees….*cries like his dog has been run over*”

  • wow

i’m done with freddy. give phelps a shot. quit digging yourself these unnecessary holes simply because “we’re so far ahead in the division.”

    • Nathan

If the Yankees keep losing games they should be winning that division lead goes away.

They seem to have forgotten this fact.

    • Bunt Gardner

      Why don’t you stop overreacting.

Because the Yankees like to toy with our emotions and blood pressure, and heart rate.

Being a Yankee fan is a lot like dating the hot chick in high school, they’ll mess with your head and heart but at the end of the night make you really happy ;)

      • jjyank

I suddenly became even happier to be a Yankee fan.

      • The Real Greg

        Good answer.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Stewart knows he’s so useless he’s trying to bunt w/ two outs and no-one one.

He should crowd the plate and just take one for the team. He’ll have a better chance of getting on base.

God I hate that drug commercial with the Dad hitting the kid’s TV…kid’s cracking voice makes me want to punch a random teen.

    • Ichy and Irok hello to number 28

I really know posada has brain farts but he couldnt be worsr than either martin or stewart and at least he could hit.

  • Heisenberg’s Hat

Ichiro pops up even more than Tex.

    • Cy Pettitte

it’s a slow transition, he’s going from ground balls to pop ups and soon he’ll be hitting monster HRs when he unleashes the Ichiro power.

  • Athenian

Ok, it is bad enough that the offense is struggling but these string of pop up hitters is annoying.

  • The Real Greg

Now if they are going to comeback and tie, they better win tonight. To quote Yoda. “Do or do not. There is no try.”

  • Heisenberg’s Hat

That’s not a good angle for my girl Meredith.
But it’s a good angle for her hooters.

      • jjyank

If you think she’s a butter face, you should meet one of my college friends. Porn star caliber body. Ugliest face you’ve ever seen. She came on to me once, and without a bag to cover her face with handy, I had to decline.

Meredith is hot as hell compared to her.

        • captain kiwi

that… hurts to hear and is almost impossible to fathom :(

          • jjyank

It’s unfortunate. If I were to take a picture of her from the neck down, you might think she’s the hottest girl to ever walk to earth. It’s a shame. Especially because she’s a really nice person, would be the catch of the century if only her head didn’t resemble a horse.

  • Tom

The Yankees #5 starter has given up 3ER in 6 innings. Sure not a great start, but what are people’s expectation for a #5 starter? (who’s only a 5th starter due to injury)

In the meantime the offense has put up 2 runs and 3 hits against the great Miguel Gonzalez.

Freddy’s an easy target but he’s not the issue tonight.

    • jjyank

      Agreed.

  • Darren

For all you Jeter haters that’s exactly the kind of play that he ALWAYS makes, and makes look easy. That doesn’t show up in metrics ( I don’t think) but it’s part of what makes him a GREAT defensive shortstop in terms of consistency. Yes, GREAT.

I too hate the fact that he’s NEVER had any range to his left, and I know that’s one of the most important flashy parts of being a SS, but to me it’s very much mitigated by the rock solid defense he exhibits on the weird hops, balls in the hole (hey now), and routine plays that he rarely screws up.

    • DERP

      lol

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

Jeter is not a great defensive SS. Not even close.

    • Heisenberg’s Hat

I’ve seen him botch plenty of routine plays.

    • Brian S.

I also hate that his leadership and intangibles are never included into these so called ‘metrics’. You know what I mean?

      • Darren

Assuming you’re being sarcastic, that’s not the argument I was making at all, and trying to make it seem like the intangibles argument is the same as a steady defense argument is stupid.

    • Jacob

+1 I would rather have a guy like jeter making all the routine plays than a guy making 26 errors a season with good range making crazy plays but botching the routine plays fuxk defensive metrics

    • Ppiddy

Jeter brings a lot more to the table than just his defense at SS (which is better than the critics say it is).

I’ll take him on my team any day.

But he probably won’t score from first (with no one out) this inning. Unless someone hits a HR.

  • Jacob

    I <3 Meredith

  • The Troll

How does the offense look thus far? Doesn’t seem like much from just observing the numbers . . .

    • Nathan

      Offensive.

    • Mike N

First run scored due to a balk. Second run was a homer. Lots of pops and flies.

  • Heisenberg’s Hat

Ichiro could hit 30 homers a year if he wanted to, but he knows those kill rallies.

  • Brian S.

I’d say something sexual about Meredith but there are females in the game thread.

    • jjyank

Keep it in your pants, Brian.

  • DERP

Granderson’s strikeouts are A HUGE PROBLEM. HUGE!

    • The Troll

      Agreed.

    • Heisenberg’s Hat

They actually are starting to bother me.

      • Ppiddy

  • Athenian

The left handed Tex – swings at anything.

  • Karl Krawfid

    This shit is so embarassing.

    Keep sitting fastball!

  • DERP

We’re just going to have to score against Luis Ayala. It’s come to that.

  • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

    Ughh

  • The Real Greg

The offspeed pitches and their sequences are killing the Yankees tonight.

  • Athenian

This pitcher is going to win the Cy Young. Yankees don’t know how to hit him.

  • DERP

    10 YEAR CONTRACT

    • Athenian

just to get 7 good years, if there are that many left.

    • Ichy and Irok hello to number 28

6 years 180 should get it done.

  • Heisenberg’s Hat

Cano needs to get back to the MVP form.

    • MannyGee

or “guy who wants a 10 year contract” form… amirite??

  • Brian S.

    Middle of the order lol

  • The Real Greg

They can’t sit on the fastball because he can throw his offspeed pitches for strikes.

  • Athenian

Pitchers can throw that slider to Cano all day and he will swing and miss every time.

  • wow

    this is beyond annoying.

  • your mom

    LOL the 2-5 hitters.

  • Kramerica Industries

This team is a pile of dung right now.

Better start turning that around before things get too interesting.

    • The Real Greg

Too late. Things are already too interesting.

      • jjyank

The largest division lead is already “too interesting”? Greg maybe you should just fact check yourself before you get too depressed.

        • The Real Greg

I want our fucking 10 game lead back. Giving other teams hope is something that you can’t do. I want this team to dominate.

          • jjyank

“Dominating” is a relative term, Greg. I am perfectly satisfied with the largest division lead, and I consider that “dominating”.

      • Kramerica Industries

        Could be worse.

Could be the free-falling Texas Rangers right now. At least they have an improved Angels team and scorching A’s team on their backs right now.

Yankees still have a nice margin, albeit one that will slim once more if they can’t pull out the W tonight.

        • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

          Aren’t the Angels in third?

  • The Troll

    Good inning!

How many walks for Boone this inning?

  • Heisenberg’s Hat

    Let’s see some Chad Qualls.

  • DERP

If Logan can’t get righty Betemit out, then he needs to just GTFO.

  • your mom

Also LOL, the Phillies want the Oriole’s #3 prospect for Joe Blanton. I seriously hope the Phillies get stuck with all their free agents to be. They’re fucking nuts.

    • jjyank

I think Amaro Jr. is just constantly wasted.

  • Ichy and Irok hello to number 28

    Brendan ryan ?
Still trying to figure that one out

  • captain kiwi

i have no more shits to give after this weekend series with the sox. down by one run to the o’s, and i really couldn’t care less. win, lose, doesn’t matter today.

    • jjyank

Agreed. I’ll care in September if a team is within 5 games. Not before. Until then, I just enjoy the game.

  • Nathan

As good as Cano is and as nice of a swing he has, he has some poor pitch recognition/pitch selection.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a player swing and then wince in disgust and hang his head in the batter’s box as much as Cano.

  • Mr. Pink

I don’t believe in this offense anymore. Grandy sure is piling up those strikeouts. Tex is up and down. And Cano is frustrating to watch.

  • The Troll

So when do we address this shit fest as an actual problem and not, “the team is still 8 games ahead in the loss column” . . . ? Where’d the GD offense go?!

  • Heisenberg’s Hat

That’s what you’re supposed to do to Wilson Betemit.

  • DERP

    Logan shouldn’t face Reynolds.

    • The Real Greg

      I agree, but it worked.

    • jjyank

His wOBA splits against are almost identical. He’s not a straight LOOGY this season.

  • Widget

Oh no the red sox took the lead and the Yankees are losing. Their lead over the last place team will drop to 9 games. They are going to choke out the division !11!!! MAIN STREAM MEDIA WINS AGAIN!@!!!!!!!!#234234325

    • The Real Greg

Dont you want to have a dominant team? That rolls over everybody?

      • Widget

You know what I care about most? Winning the World Series. Who cares how they look in the regular season. Ask the 2004 Red Sox fans, or last year’s Cardinal’s fans.

The 2004 and 2006 Yankees looked dominant, how’d those seasons turnout? Meanwhile the 2000 Yankees looked like shit, and look at how that turned out.

        • Kramerica Industries

That just proves that the best team almost never wins.

Cardinals have made some deal with the devil to have won two World Series in the past five years with teams that were lucky to even be in the playoffs. That 1982 drought should still be in existence.

          • Widget

that 06 team is one of the worst teams ever in any sport to win a title. Of course for my money the 87 Twins are the worst team ever to win a title.

    • The Troll

Ah fuck! Why’d you have to draw my attention to that?! That weekend was far too much to handle. I have to see them suffer. If they win, those losses will feel even worse.

    • Nathan

Meh…crappy game. Actually glad I have to go grab dinner.

I hope I come back in an hour and see they pulled it out. Not holding my breathe.

  • DERP

I wasn’t expecting that. Nice work Boone.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Cano is getting into one of those swing-early-at-anything funks. He’s getting impatient.

You know Long is in his ear telling him to stop swinging at crap early – so he took the first pitch and made it look like he knew a ball was coming. And then swung at the same pitch that was ball 2. Overanxious.

And why overanxious? Because in the “other” ear, he’s got Borax telling him that with A-Rod out, this is the opportunity to carry the team and prove why he’s worth 10 years.

Does anyone really not think that Boras’ timing had everything to do with A-Rod goon on the shelf and to put the focus on Cano?

    • Heisenberg’s Hat

Boras is such a jerk for throwing the pitch that broke Alex’s hand!

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

I don’t know where you got that from. But okay.

I’ll give you a second opportunity to accuse me of something because I don’t want to retort if I’m interpreting your comment incorrectly.

  • CUYanks

Doing the wave in a 1-run game where you’re losing?

  • Kramerica Industries

It’s always poor form to see the Wave at Yankee Stadium.

    Never.

    Ever.

    • CUYanks

      Yeah, especially in this situation.

  • DERP

Morales with two home runs in one inning for the Angels.

  • Heisenberg’s Hat

Logan walking lousy lefthanded batter = LOL

  • Kramerica Industries

    Guess I shouldn’t be surprised.

Stadium fans couldn’t be bothered to knock the ball away from Ryan Sweeney, either.

  • Mr. Pink

And slowly we’re allowing our division rivals to climb back in contention. This team needs to stop being shitty against our own division.

    • The Real Greg

See what I mean? I’m not the only guy worried about this.

      • The Troll

        Damn you Greg! WE AGREE ON SOMETHING ! ! ! ! ! !

    • The Troll

I think we’re the only ones that actually fear a Red Sox run . . . If they keep winning and we keep losing . . . How is that out of the realm of possibility? I don’t get it . . .

      • TomH

It isn’t out of the realm of possibility at all. Anyone who says otherwise knows nothing about baseball (or its history).

        • CUYanks

It’s not that I specifically fear a Red Sox run or Orioles run, but the Yankees will have to win their share of games to avoid being caught by someone. After all, there’s a good chance at least one of the Orioles/Rays/Red Sox plays well above .500 ball the rest of the way out.

      • Mr. Pink

The only reason I worry is because they have a better all around offense that is not completely dependent on the home run. The Yankees seem helpless when they don’t get that three run homer.

        • The Troll

Yup. Exactly. The Red Sox is better than the Yankees. It’s obvious. Such a statement needs no defense. And they still haven’t had a full, complete lineup yet either.

          • The Troll

            Red Sox *offense*

  • Athenian

So how many more games of this type will be permitted before the mantra of ” they have a solid lead” is no longer used as a justifiable excuse for poor performance?

    • jjyank

Nobody is using that as an excuse for the performance, but those people (including me) are saying that it’s not the end of the world considering the division lead. If the Orioles/Rays/Red Sox are 3 games back in September, I’ll be worried. But sure as shit not tonight.

      • Heisenberg’s Hat

But losing a game to a division rival like that is really a two game swing.

        • jjyank

No, it’s a one game swing. We lose tonight, the O’s gain ONE game.

          • CUYanks

As opposed to losing 1 game if the Yankees win.

      • Athenian

You may not have to wait for September for those teams to be 3 games back. Could happen by next week. They will get swept by the O’s and lose 2 of 3 to Seattle as they are currently playing.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

          such an optimist

          • Athenian

um they have 3 wins in the past 8 days against teams they should have beaten. if not for home runs, they could have been shut out in 4 of the past 10.

            • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

And if they got one more bloop hit in each game, they could have won five more. Five of their last seven losses have been by one run.

              • Athenian

You would be right. But as with the playoffs when teams are upset in a 5 game series, luck cannot be a factor. In these games, they should not have been in that position. There AB’s were not quality, they assisted pitchers by chasing bad pitches, played poor defense, really just pedestrian effort. The HR’s only allowed them to appear to be in those games.

        • jjyank

And then I’ll worry. I can’t get all concerned about what MIGHT happen weeks from now given a fictional future narrative. All I can do regarding my level of concern for this team’s chances is what I know has happened so far. And I know this team has the biggest division lead in all of baseball, so I am not concerned for now. When a team is within 5 games, I may get concerned. But this is hardly the time to jump off the cliff.

          • Athenian

I completely get your point. Really was just questioning the “excuses” that are thrown around in these game threads, radio, tv, etc presented as explanations for going 2-9 over the past 11 games (includes tonight).

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

It’s a slump. Every team has slumps. The Yankees are in the fortunate position of being able to withstand a slump now because of the lead.

    • TomH

Well, it takes about 7-10 lousy performances to pretty much blow a lead, taking the Yankees, e.g., back to that period when everyone in the AL East was jammed up. So, the answer is, let’s say, 9 such games combined with a good run by the Rays or O’s. My fear, though, is Boston. Once they’re at full strength, and after their handling of the Yankees, they may well have a serious confidence boost.

Their starting pitching is at full strength and it sucks. Their offense was never a problem and the additions of Crawful and Lullsbury haven’t had any sort of impact.

  • The Real Greg

Of course Boone Logan does that.

    There goes our division lead.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

      wow, you’re an idiot

    • jjyank

Wait, they’re in second place now? Come on Greg, you’re better than this.

    • MannyGee

really? we’re losing 7 games tonight? Did Cashman double down or something??

You didn’t warn us about Baltimore. I feel blindsided.

    CRAP!

    fucking LNOGY

  • Brian S.

Welp. This team will turn it around eventually. Maybe.

  • Kramerica Industries

Boone Logan. Two outs, no one on, and then he implodes.

    Well done.

Yankees look like they are going to lose a game to the team in 2nd place. Interesting, the Rangers look like the same thing is going to happen to them. I wonder if Rangers fans are sorts of FREAKING OUT!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Brian S.

The Rangers aren’t injured like the Yankees. If the Yankees had Gardner, Rodriguez, Pettitte I wouldn’t be worried at all.

    • your mom

They probably are too. Hamilton’s playing like shit and Ryan still hasn’t traded for a starter.

losing baseball. pen making mistakes late in games(3 in a row) and zero clutch hitting.

yankee announcers and others act like they are watching good baseball. a team that cannot score without hitting a homerun and giving up runs late is a formula for a 3 game losing streak..

logan’s high water mark was early in the season he is officially back to being Boone Logan. walks quintanilla, nice move………………

    • jjyank

      Bessie?

  • wow

at this point I don’t really expect us to come back from this. Not with the way we’ve been playing. Just weakness all around.

  • Mike N

I still feel like we’re gonna win this game.

  • DERP

Fuck Teixeira you dumb fucking POS

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

      Seriously?

      • MannyGee

        surprised? really?

  • Mr. Pink

This team really needed a trade for an impact guy whether it was Zack Greinke or Chase Headley. But alas we got a washed up 38 year old Ichiro. This team really needs a shot in the arm.

    • FIPster Doofus

They absolutely need a bat. Ichiro was a fine speed/defense pickup, but he can’t hit for shit.

      • Kramerica Industries

        Well, that’s shocking isn’t it?

This is why intangible talk like “he’s going to be rejuvenated going into a playoff race” kind of shit is to be ignored. Sometimes, once you suck, you suck. And, with the bat, Ichiro sucks…ASS.

        • FIPster Doofus

Agreed. Hearing the announcers and analysts worship him every day is annoying as hell. He’s an awful offensive player these days.

          • FIPster Doofus

haha, five minutes later he hits a homer. The point still stands.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    fuck…what happened to Tex?

  • Mike N

    Um, maybe?

Two-out RBIs are so fucking painful.

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

I know the word “unacceptable” gets thrown around here a lot but giving up multiple hits to JJ Hardy and Mark Reynolds is pretty fucking bad.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

This is annoying. We need more outbursts like Friday. Too many close games lately.

Close games are okay and interesting. But I’d like to see less of them for a little bit.

    As I say that….5-2. F@ck! That’s not what I meant’

  • stuart a

main difference between thsi game and the ranger game is the ANgels are much better then the Orioles. also I can care less about the rangers my concern is the yankees, who are not playing good at all.

lucky binder boy gave our 185 hitting catcher(on base 4 times last night) the day off to play yogi Stewart.

5 to 2… great game…grandy with 124 k’s, but hey give him a 5 year extension………….yankee fans are insane with these long term deals for old guys who would not get remotely that type of money from anyone else….

GREAT EFFORT. now the yansk arent desperate angle by the announcers. nice….BULLSHIT BUT predicatable……

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

they really, really need a player like ARod to help out the offense….

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I actually agree with some of this. I do think some team would be silly enough to throw big money at Grandy though.

  • Ichy and Irok hello to number 28

  • wow

yep. there it is. what’s it going to take for this team to wake up? Seriously.

  • Mr. Pink

Other teams make it look so easy. A guy doubles, the next guy singles him in. For the Yankees it’s : a guy doubles, pop out, line out, strikeout.

    • Get Phelps Up

I hear the Yankees are the only team that’s not hitting 1.00 with RISP this season.

  • stuart a

as stated if the yanks do not make a big move they are going no where.

they will not make that big move for an athletic young position player and therefore they are winning zilch this year………….

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      He changes everything.

    • your mom

The offense started stinking before Arod was injured.

  • Mr. Pink

Even though we’re in first place by 8 games it feels like so much less just because Boston, Tampa, and Balitimore have been playing so well and there’s not a lot of room for error.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

The Orioles have lost five of their last seven games.

The Red Sox have lost six of their last nine games.

The Rays are the only one playing well, and they’re 4-4 in their last eight.

The Yankees have gained 1.5 games in the standings over the last seven days.

      • Widget

        damn facts!!!!!!!!

      • CUYanks

I’m not sure how you mean this. On July 23 the Yankees were up 7, 9, 9.5, 10.5 on the division. Today they are up 7.5, 7.5, 9, 9.5 on them. I understand you’re point that it’s not like the other teams are on fire or catching up much, but you might be exaggerating here, as the only team we’ve “gained” on have been the Orioles by 0.5 game (and we’ve lost 1.5, 1, and 0.5 to the Rays, Sox, and Jays respectively.) This is not of course including today, where the results are TBD.

  • The Troll

Well . . . after the A’s series and this past weekend, I really can’t stick around for another game where the offense has gone MIA. The sting of losing to Pedro Ciriaco is still too fresh. G’night folks.

    • Mike N

You have just guaranteed a come back win.

  • DERP

They are doing us a favor by keeping this guy in.

    • your mom

      not really.

  • Widget

It’s not A-rod they miss, it’s Gardner. Sucks he won’t be back this year. His speed and defense are sorely missed.

    • Heisenberg’s Hat

      Gardner’s not really that good.

      • Need Pitching & Hitting

Gardner would probably be the 6th best offensive player in this lineup

      • Widget

Plays elite defense, gets on base, can steal, sees a lot of pitches. Nope, Yankees don’t need that, he’s worthless if he can’t homer.

        • Heisenberg’s Hat

He’s a good player, but he’s not this great missing ingredient everyone keeps talking about. I didn’t see anyone saying the Yanks don’t need him, but to hear some people talk you’d think he was going to the hall of fame.

  • Ichy and Irok hello to number 28

I guess it’s true, Ichiro can homer if he wants to, he just usually chooses to have a higher batting average. This time, it suddenly dawned on him that hitting home runs is better, so he did that.

Probably buying something. Boston’s not 10 games out of a playoff spot.

    • MannyGee

if we were 10 games out and sitting at .500???

trading Cano, Kuroda and Granderson for some good to great young pitching, because I would think we would be realists and know that we’re pretty much done.

Also, considering current company thinks we’re done because we’re losing to Baltimore, I would assume the current ‘fan base’ would be OK with blowing shit up at 10 games back.
