The Yankees have an eight-game lead in the loss column in the AL East, and their closest competitor pretty much all season has been the Orioles. They’ve taken five of eight from Baltimore this year but lost two of three at Yankee Stadium back late-April/early-May. It’s only a matter of time before the O’s completely fade out of the picture, and the Yankees can expedite that process with a solid series this week. We all know they need it after winning just three of their last ten games. Here’s the starting nine…

As to this game, we haven’t seen him before, which in the last 6 times we faced a pitcher like this, we have lost.
I’m not confident about this game.

Fuck a losing a series against an irrelevant last place team. This series with the Orioles is WAY more important. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s crucial or vital considering the size of our lead, but it would be a very good thing to win a series against the closest team to us in our division.
Why have we been assuming all season that the O’s are just going to go back to being a pumpkin? They’re starting to remind of the Rays-we keep waiting for them to fall off and they never actually do.
They have fallen off, just not to the degree that we’re used to seeing them. it’s been a gradual decline for them.

Worrying about Ichiro batting 8th or 9th is kind of pointless, but if I had my preference, I’d put him 8th.

Okay, totally random off topic question, but I have a conundrum. My mom works in ad sales for a magazine, and one of her clients is Nike. A perk of this is that once a year, she get’s a free pair of customized NikeID shoes. Since she doesn’t need a pair of Nike’s once a year, she let’s our family take turns designing our own. It’s my turn again, and since my previous NikeIDs were sneakers, I’m looking at running shoes instead.
I can’t decide what to get. I’ve heard that the “shocks” shoes are great, but useless when you inevitably blow the shocks out. Does anyone have a pair of Nike running shoes that they love? I’d appreciate any input.
Go to a Nike store and let them do their gait analysis and recommend the right shoe for you. Then get that one.

For all you Jeter haters that’s exactly the kind of play that he ALWAYS makes, and makes look easy. That doesn’t show up in metrics ( I don’t think) but it’s part of what makes him a GREAT defensive shortstop in terms of consistency. Yes, GREAT.
I too hate the fact that he’s NEVER had any range to his left, and I know that’s one of the most important flashy parts of being a SS, but to me it’s very much mitigated by the rock solid defense he exhibits on the weird hops, balls in the hole (hey now), and routine plays that he rarely screws up.

It’s not that I specifically fear a Red Sox run or Orioles run, but the Yankees will have to win their share of games to avoid being caught by someone. After all, there’s a good chance at least one of the Orioles/Rays/Red Sox plays well above .500 ball the rest of the way out.
The only reason I worry is because they have a better all around offense that is not completely dependent on the home run. The Yankees seem helpless when they don’t get that three run homer.

It’s a slump. Every team has slumps. The Yankees are in the fortunate position of being able to withstand a slump now because of the lead.
Well, it takes about 7-10 lousy performances to pretty much blow a lead, taking the Yankees, e.g., back to that period when everyone in the AL East was jammed up. So, the answer is, let’s say, 9 such games combined with a good run by the Rays or O’s. My fear, though, is Boston. Once they’re at full strength, and after their handling of the Yankees, they may well have a serious confidence boost.
Their starting pitching is at full strength and it sucks. Their offense was never a problem and the additions of Crawful and Lullsbury haven’t had any sort of impact.
