Game 103: The Return of Joba

By

(REUTERS/Jessica Rinaldi)

The Yankees swung just one trade before this afternoon’s deadline, but they ultimately upgraded two roster spots. Casey McGehee will replace Ramiro Pena when he joins the team tomorrow, and Joba Chamberlain officially returns from the DL to replace the departed Chad Qualls tonight. It’s been 208 regular season games and 421 days since Joba last pitched in a big league game, and his return tonight isn’t just a feel-good story. The Yankees need another non-matchup late-inning arm and since they didn’t acquire anyone like that the deadline, Joba’s the guy. Here’s the starting nine…

DH Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
2B Robinson Cano
1B Nick Swisher
LF Raul Ibanez
3B Eric Chavez
RF Ichiro Suzuki
Russell Martin
SS Ramiro Pena

RHP Ivan Nova

Tonight’s game is schedule to start at 7:05pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and MLB Network nationally. Enjoy.

  1. MartinRanger says:

    Oh god my eyes.

Who knows though, the scrubs can’t be that much worse than what we’ve been getting from the regulars recently.

  2. Brian S. says:

I hope we get the Chris Tillman that gave up 7 runs in 0.2 innings against Minnesota instead of the one that pitched well against the Rays, Indians, and Mariners.

  3. Jacob says:

To echo Mike’s twitter statement, WHAT THE HELL WOULD TH YANKEES DO WITH CARLOS LEE?!?

  4. Cuso says:

If you go back and look at the game thread from this past weekend, I called out Sweeney for smacking his hand in the dugout the minute it happened. Announcers didn’t even notice it.

    Out 8 weeks.

  5. So almost 1100 comments across four threads and all we have to show for it is McGehee and Joba? Good w/ me.

  6. jim says:

Here’s a bone for you Ramiro…a start before you get sent down. Maybe if you hit four homers….aah. But, at least you got to see that your number went to someone pretty important in our plans, Chris Stewart…aah. Say hi to Cervi, Wade and Nune.

  7. Idk how many Harry Potter fans reside on these boards but OMG:

  8. Mike Myers says:

anyone wanna buy a Qualls jersey? Real cheap!

  9. Lol, Sterling would think the deadline isn’t until midnight.

  10. Hummingbird S. says:

    now that’s a good inning..

  11. RetroRob says:

Nova’s pitch efficiency dropped substantially after the second batter of the game. Concerned.

  12. Stratman9652 says:

    Wow. Grab some pine bitches.

  13. Hummingbird S. says:

yay for Jeets double… too bad he’s now in scoring position

  14. John, Suzyn, that was the second pitch of the game.

  15. jjyank says:

    RISPWIN!

  16. The Real Greg says:

    There we go.

  17. Andy says:

    Let’s goooo

  18. Jersey Joe says:

Finally, we’re getting ahead early. I like it.

  19. Hummingbird S. says:

a hit that scores a run! Nice

  20. Bartolo's Colon says:

was jeter really held up there for a second?

  21. …guess I was wrong about the line up being wrong, Huh?

  22. The Real Greg says:

    The slump is over!

  23. Cy Pettitte says:

holy shit Robbie. he made that look way too easy.

  24. jjyank says:

Welcome back Robbie! Good Mo is that swing a thing of beauty.

  25. Andy says:

    WOW. So much swag

  26. Get Phelps Up says:

That’s the Cano we know and love.

  27. Hummingbird S. says:

    Awesome start! Robbie!

  28. Jersey Joe says:

    YAY FOR TIMELY HITTING!

THANK GOD FOR CANO AND GRANDY

  29. RetroRob says:

The speed things are happening in this game is dizzying. I’m trying to make dinner!

  30. Arya says:

As Robbie Cano goes so does the Yankee offense. Good sign.

  31. Jersey Joe says:

    ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBIEE!

  32. MartinRanger says:

Well that’s a good way to break a slump.

  33. Stratman9652 says:

    Already love this game.

  34. Hummingbird S. says:

    Can we face Tillman everyday?

  35. Kramerica Industries says:

    Rangers got Dempster?

That’s a pretty nice job by then. Feliz and Lewis are gone for the remainder, and Oswalt has been a bust.

    • Jersey Joe says:

I feel like the Rangers are eternally in need of pitching.

    • Get Phelps Up says:

It’s funny how people were slobbering over Nolan Ryan not putting any of their pitchers on a pitch count and now they’re all getting injured.

      • Get Phelps Up says:

Oops. Was supposed to be a reply to Jersey Joe.

      • Kramerica Industries says:

Nolan Ryan’s reasoning is sound enough.

But applying it to a generation of pitchers who aren’t conditioned that way is flawed. Apply his logic to the next generation of pitchers, and it has a chance of working.

Of course, breaking balls do the most damage to arms, and those are thrown more than ever nowadays, so it remains to be seen how much such ideologies can be effective.

        • jjyank says:

I think your last point is very important. Can guys throw sliders without pitch counts? I don’t really think so.

          • I still think the idea of innings limits is flawed. There needs to be a set what an “inning” of pitching is. Because under the current Verducci effect system, when it comes to an innings limit Nova’s first inning and Tillman’s first inning where equal.

            • jjyank says:

Totally agree. And also, not all pitches are created equal. Pitching and easy 1-2-3 inning when you team has a big lead is totally different on your arm than reaching back for something extra to get out of a bases loaded jam in a close game.

Not sure what the solution is, but no restrictions at all seems naive to me.

            • Get Phelps Up says:

I like the idea of total pitches thrown. It’s still flawed because obviously some pitches are higher-stress than others, but it seems like it would be more accurate than innings.

  36. jjyank says:

    Ibanez = wheels.

  37. Cuso says:

Tillman looks like Phelps, doesn’t he?

  38. MartinRanger says:

    BABIP WIN!

  39. jjyank says:

LOL at the camera shot of Ibanez “hustling” to third. It was like the little engine that could.

And by little engine, I mean old man.

  40. Suzyn doesn’t like the trade for McGehee cause it’s going to cut into her love, Nix’s playing time.

  41. Jersey Joe says:

Chavez does such a good job of semi-situational hits. A hit like that won’t score Ibanez, but it puts him at third, which can score Ibanez. It really was a minor hit but with this lineup anything helps.

  42. Brian S. says:

Hit and run! Playing the game the right way!

  43. jjyank says:

Haha this game is awesome so far.

  44. Get Phelps Up says:

    Thank you Tillman!

  45. MartinRanger says:

Well, Ichiro still hasn’t had an 0-fer as a Yankee.

  46. MartinRanger says:

    I’d love a rally-killing bomb here.

  47. jjyank says:

Damn, 29 pitches by Tillman and still 1 out.

  48. Tom says:

Don’t you have to bunt here and put ducks on the pond for Pena?

  49. Cuso says:

    Insanity in the Bronx

  50. Andy says:

    Pena make it 6 please

  51. God damnit Russel. Even when awesome things happen you go and do that.

  52. Hummingbird S. says:

the hit was nice, the inning is beautiful… but how many times can they make outs at the bases??

  53. Jersey Joe says:

Why didn’t Ichiro bluff for home during the rundown?

  54. sangreal says:

Surprised that hit by Ichiro was scored an error. Same thing happened to Phil Hughes in his last no-hit bid (2010) and it was ruled a hit (by Eric Chavez, no less)

  55. Laz says:

Well I did have a good feeling about this game.

  56. Cuso says:

    ‘Miro’s goon yard

  57. Kevin G. says:

    Will Joba play today?

    • jjyank says:

I sure hope so. I think he was scheduled to throw in Trenton anyway, so why not? I can’t wait to see him back on the hill.

    • RetroRob says:

He was scheduled to pitch tonight, so can’t see why they wouldn’t use him this evening, especially at the rate this game is going. Nice low-pressure situation to make his debut…hopefully.

  58. MartinRanger says:

    You tried Ramiro.

  59. jjyank says:

Awesome. Up by 5 runs, and Tillman threw 37 pitches already. Glorious.

  60. Jersey Joe says:

As much as I dislike Pena’s skillset, he was definitely going all out down the line, doing everything he can for the team in his one game.

I don’t really see that fire in Nix, as if he’s earned the util inf job.

    He hasn’t.

Would like to see Ramiro for a few more games instead of Nix.

  61. Kramerica Industries says:

    0-2 pitch, for cripes’ sake.

  62. Karl Krawfid says:

    Nova sucks man

  63. RetroRob says:

Prefer 1st-inning Nova to second-inning Nova.

  64. Mike N says:

    Bear the fuck down, Nova!

  65. Tom says:

0-2 slider right down the middle.

If he could ever clean up his command issues (more so with fastballs leaking out over the plate), Nova could be a dominant pitcher.

He had a shot at 3K’s in a row on 9 pitches if he buries that slider in the dirt.

  66. Mike N says:

    Gaah!

  67. MartinRanger says:

Wow Nova. Way to kill the good feelings.

  68. Karl Krawfid says:

    NOVA IS TRASH.

  69. RetroRob says:

    Joba time yet?

  70. Kramerica Industries says:

    Unreal.

From 0-2 2 outs, to now a 5-3 game. Nova has been a dumpster fire of late.

  71. Cy Pettitte says:

    Nova fucking terrible

  72. Mike N says:

I hate two-out RBIs more than *anything*.

  73. teddy says:

    should of traded for dempster

  74. Arya says:

    Get Joba warming right now.

  75. DERP says:

    Nova sucks ass. Fuck him.

  76. jjyank says:

God damn it Nova get out of this.

  77. MartinRanger says:

    Get Phelps up.

  78. DERP says:

    Get this stupid fucker out

  79. Mike N says:

    This is ugly.

  80. Widget says:

Was a 5 run lead not enough Nova? This game went from awesome to fucking god awful pretty fast.

  81. Jersey Joe says:

    Dammit Nova.

  82. DERP says:

This is why we can’t have nice things.

  83. The Troll says:

It would figure that the first time that the Yankees break out of the gate, setting the ball on fire, that the formerly strong pitching would immediately shit the bed.

  84. Karl Krawfid says:

    This is what Nova is.

  85. NOVA IS WORSE THAN AIDS!!!!!

    /obvious troll is obvious

  86. Countryclub says:

Yanks can’t be happy with what they’ve seen out of Nova this yr.

  87. Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

Listening to the radio, so for those who are watching — are these hits well hit (other than the Reynolds double)? Nova’s BABIP is .714 so far.

  88. Get Phelps Up says:

    Stupid hanging 0-2 slider.

  89. MartinRanger says:

His body language is awful. Then again so is his pitching.

This is disgraceful. The team desperately needs a win, they finally break out the bats, and Nova shit himself?

  90. Widget says:

Davis is going yard to end this farce. And Greg will be happy.

  91. Kramerica Industries says:

This is like the Kuroda start at Fenway

Five runs after the first inning, and he gave it all back.

One hit and Nova would have done the same.

  92. The Troll says:

    7 – 5 Orioles anyone?

  93. MartinRanger says:

    I’m going to throw up.

  94. jjyank says:

You gotta be fucking kidding me.

  95. Kramerica Industries says:

    FUCK YOU NOVA

  96. DERP says:

Nova can go straight to hell.

  97. Mr. Pink says:

Why did I have a feeling that Nova would give up multiple runs after we scored five for him? This fucking team. When one part of our team is clicking the other falls apart.

  98. Cy Pettitte says:

die in a fucking fire Nova. seriously, piece of trash.

  99. Get Phelps Up says:

    Nova sucks man.

  100. Mike N says:

    Are you fucking kidding me?!?!?!?!?!?!?

  101. RetroRob says:

His body language suggests he’s given up.

Was in the process of typing there’s a 50-50 change the Yankees are two runs behind and then boom.

  102. bobtaco says:

    Are you kidding me?

  103. Tom says:

    7 runs…. with 2 outs…

  104. Jersey Joe says:

DEAR GOD NOVA WHAT IS YOUR PROBLEM!

  105. jjyank says:

Well I just hope this isn’t one of those games where the offense disappears after the first inning.

  106. wow says:

    oh, but this team’s fine.

    • jjyank says:

Still one of the best in all of baseball.

      • The Troll says:

Enough with that. Please. The past few weeks have done nothing to reinforce that statement. They’re shit right now. Why can’t we all just agree on that?

        • jjyank says:

Because they’re not shit. They’re playing badly now, but such is life in baseball. They still have the biggest division lead in baseball. They’re a good team. Don’t overreact to cold streaks so much.

  107. Frank says:

Way to crash and burn. Just unbelievable.

  108. MartinRanger says:

What about 3-game losing streak doesn’t Girardi understand? How can nobody be warming?

  109. teddy says:

fire cashman please, the choke job is on

  110. Arya says:

Nova’s not even in the discussion for 4th starter anymore. I said a while ago that Phelps might not replace Freddy, he might replace Nova, and everyone laughed.

  111. DT says:

    Nova is friggin Terrible

  112. Cy Pettitte says:

    PHELPS.

  113. Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

Before the walk and homer, I thought maybe Nova was just getting BABIP’d by singles. But I guess no longer.

  114. Ethan says:

    GTFO Nova. Get Phelps up!

  115. Karl Krawfid says:

Where are the Nova defenders at?

  116. Jamey says:

So I guess it’s safe to assume Nova’s reaction to Cashman not dealing for a SP was “Whew! Pressure’s off.”

  117. Celerino Sanchez says:

Write it down. This team will not make the playoffs.

  118. Tom says:

Well at least Martin’s baserunning gaffe is unimportant.

  119. Jersey Joe says:

    NOVA HAS 31.50 ERA!!!

  120. The Real Greg says:

    I’m done with this.

This team is not going to win a title.

    Goodnight

    • If it makes you less sad, I will die by your hand
Hope you find out what you are; already know what I am
And if it makes you less sad, we’ll start talking again
You can tell me how vile I already know that I am
I’ll grow old, start acting my age
It’ll be a brand new day in a life that you hate
A crown of gold, a heart that’s harder than stone
And it hurts to hold on, but it’s missed when it’s gone

Call me a safe bet, I’m betting I’m not
I’m glad that you can forgive, only hoping as time goes, you can forget

    • Widget says:

You badly want the choke job so don’t get all high and mighty now.

    • jjyank says:

      Oh Greg.

  121. MartinRanger says:

That was quite possibly the worst job of Yankees pitching I have had the misfortune to witness since Javier Vazquez/Esteban Loaiza in the 22-0 game.

At least I’m not at the stadium this time.

    • The Troll says:

I was at the Chien-Ming Wang game where the Indians won 22-0 (I believe). It was the first weekend at the New Yankee Stadium . . . That was fun. Totally worth the price of admission.

  122. Garbage says:

    NOVA= Absolute fuc*ing trash.

  123. cjc says:

about the most disgusting thing I have ever seen on a baseball diamond. Fucking disgraceful

  124. Jersey Joe says:

    facepalm. big ass facepalm

  125. Widget says:

Sure losing those red sox games sucked, but losing to Buck Showalter is pretty damn sucky too.

  126. rawbrain says:

yeah it sucks it sucks but its still the 2nd. nova does need to get his shit together i would rather see phelps right now..

  127. Cuso says:

    I’m not kidding:

I fell asleep in my recliner when the top of the 2nd started. Kay’s call on the Chris Davis HR woke me up. What the hell happened?!

  128. DERP says:

Phelps threw 36 pitches last night. He’s not coming in.

  129. Karl Krawfid says:

Maybe he should get the hell off of Twitter and work on his fastball command.

  130. Arya says:

Last year they sent Nova down to AAA and he came back a better pitcher. They need to do the same again this year. He’s not the same. He doesn’t have any control. Give Phelps the job for now.

  131. stuart a says:

12 more extra base hits then any other pitcher in the AL.

    that is horrible… gave a 7 spot in the 2nd wow………..

    horrible.

  132. DERP says:

Can we get a new thread Mike. This one needs to be nuked.

    • TomH says:

God, yeah, the vilenss of some of those remarks about Nova oughtn’t to be seen by the general public. The thread should be nuked.

  133. Mr. Pink says:

Casey McGehee and Ichiro Suzuki were the Yankees trade acquisitions. Barf. I wasn’t expecting anything monumental but we should’ve at least gotten someone a little more impactful.

  134. your mom says:

Holy fucking shit! Is Nova fucking serious? I go to eat, we’re up 5-0. I come back, we’re losing 5-7. Nova sucks phat dick!

    • Celerino Sanchez says:

Boy you eat quick because that lead evaporated pretty damn quick.

In about two weeks the lead in the division will seem to have slipped away just as fast.

  135. Nice Scheister says:

That sucked big horsejunk dot MPEG.

  136. Nova, take note to Tillman having a shut down inning so far.

  137. Jamey says:

Losing a bunch of 1 run games, most being low scoring affairs & then exploding for 5 runs in the bottom of the 1st & your pitcher giving up that lead PLUS 2 runs IMMEDIATELY may be more deflating to the lineup than the actual offensive struggles were.

  138. Tom says:

Hugely frustrating when Nova has a guy who strikes out 30% of the time at 0-2 and can’t put him away.

Any halfway decent pitch and it’s a scoreless inning.

  139. Jersey Joe says:

They got to rekindle the timely hitting from just 40 minutes ago.

    Dammit Nova.

  140. MartinRanger says:

So…anybody want to give Adam Warren another shot?

  141. Cy Pettitte says:

now Tillman will throw 6 scoreless frames of course

  142. Widget says:

I like Granderson, but lately it’s been hard to watch him.

    • DT says:

He was fine getting that hit one inning ago

    • Mr. Pink says:

Same here. I don’t think I’m comfortable with having a guy who strikes out that much on that Yankees anymore. It’s just too much. Hitting 40 homeruns doesn’t make it okay to strikeout 160 + times. Give me a contact guy who hits .300 and 20 homers over a guy who hits .250 hits 40 homeruns and strikes out 180 times.

  143. wow says:

the 2-1 call was absolute BS

  144. DERP says:

If Nova is gonna suck, at least hit Adam Jones in the head and take him out for the season.

  145. Mr. Pink says:

Fucking Showalter and the Orioles. Ever since he took over the Orioles send us into spiraling losing streaks everytime we play them.

    • Ethan says:

Send us? They’re playing pretty terrible baseball right now.

    • TomH says:

The “us” here–that is, the “them”–is a pretty weak lineup. No ARod, no Gardner, no Teixeira. People like Pena and Martin (all field, no hit]). This is not a winning lineup. The team may be fine, but we ain’t seeing that.

  146. The Troll says:

And you just KNOW that the offense will promptly disappear . . . Seems like the team has gone through a lot more valleys than peaks this season. Or maybe the bad is just more memorable.

    • DT says:

How does a team have a winning record if they go through more valleys than peaks?

      • TomH says:

They play a lot of games against the NL.

      • jjyank says:

Yeah, this. Are we forgetting that ridiculous run before the all-star break where they were threatening to break that 3+ run scored record? They played ~.700 baseball for a pretty long stretch there. And two weeks of not playing well erases 6 weeks of straight dominating? Good lord.

        • The Troll says:

          Damn. You’re so . . . angry.

          • jjyank says:

Not angry at all. Baseball, and most certainly negative RAB commenters, do not ever make me angry.

            • The Troll says:

No. You’re angry. You reply to nearly every single comment on here. You’ve got words for everyone and everything. I liked you better when you were stoned 24/7.

              • Haha says:

                Couldn’t agree more.

              • jjyank says:

That’s funny because I wasn’t an RAB commenter two years ago. I do comment a lot, but if you notice, most of it is light hearted banter or neutral game commentary. I only combat the doom and gloomers who’s crystal balls say the Yankees won’t make the playoffs with absolute certainty. But I know better with you, so enjoy your false perceptions of people on the internet.

                • The Troll says:

Haha. Haha agrees with me. Haha.

                  • Jbaby15 says:

I don’t always agree with what jjyank says, or how he says it…but I will say that he is generally one of the more rational posters on here. You can’t just throw away a whole season because of a bad two week stretch. Yes, the Yankees are playing pretty awful at the moment, and it’s frustrating to watch as a fan. Even more so due to the fact that they were playing so well right before this current collapse. I think if we’re truly fans of this team however, we owe it to them to at least give them a chance to right the ship.

                    • The Troll says:

Of course. You’re cordial. You address people as equals. You present your point without forcing it down people’s throats. That is admirable. Without going into much detail, I just think that this team has significant, glaring holes. Holes that were not patched up at the deadline. I, in all honesty, cannot see this team proceeding past the ALDS. And, well, they’re still in the AL East. If another person harps on the big division lead I’m going to lose it. Two months left to play. That’s PLENTY of time to fall apart. This team is already at an extreme handicap with its injuries so, for the people whose preferred response is to panic, I say let them. The Yankees are shit right now. There are no two ways about it. They suck. Personally, I don’t see any reason why that HAS TO change on the road to October. Other teams got stronger while the Yankees (IMO) did not. We’ll see what Joba adds but it’s the offense that needed the greatest makeover. . .

I’ve lost my train of thought. Sorry. Anyhow, Yankees’ playoff hopes are not ensured and with 60 games left to play, it’s anyone’s game. Come playoff time, should they indeed pull through and land a spot, I don’t have any realistic faith that they’ll succeed. The offense is far too weak. Ugh, okay, I’m hungry.

  147. wow says:

well this is gonna be great.

  148. teddy says:

yanks score 5, o score 7 runs, yanks scored zero

  149. Mike N says:

We can certainly outslug the Os if Nova can bear down and get us to the bullpen.

  150. Billy says:

Granderson doing his best AROD impression

  151. Jersey Joe says:

Remember when we thought Nova could pass as a #2 starter before Pineda and Kuroda?

    O O
    __

  152. NOVA BLOWS CHUNKS says:

How did Michael Kay used to say it? The thing about the little girl with the curl? When Nova’s good he’s good, but when he’s bad he’s really bad.

Absolute batting practice. Can you believe how awful those pitches were?

  153. your mom says:

    So Quintanilla is Baltimore’s Ciriaco?

  154. Ethan says:

Is Dempster still looking so bad now?

    • MartinRanger says:

It’s a minor miracle how the Yankees are in first place with the luck they’ve had. Trade young bat for young starter – shoulder surgery; Pettitte is unbelievably good in comeback – broken leg, offense starts scuffling but A-Rod is heating up – broken wrist, and now pass up starter because your rotation should be solid – Nova ‘pitches’ the worst game of his career.

    • Bunt Gardner says:

This has no bearing on Dempster’s skill.

  155. DT says:

    Can Cliff Lee pass waivers?

  156. DERP says:

Nova needs to bear down right now.

  157. Stratman9652 says:

I come back from dinner and it is 7-5 O’s? WTF Nova?

  158. Cy Pettitte says:

gave up a double to LEW FUCKING FORD. you can’t make this shit up.

  159. Karl Krawfid says:

    Fucking trash.

  160. DERP says:

Get him out. He has nothing. Pains me to say it.

  161. Ethan says:

This game has trap written all over it. Up by 5, now down by 2. Time for the offense to go to sleep for 6 innings and put a too little too late rally together in the 8th and 9th.

  162. DT says:

Can we get rid of Nova now? Seriously Girardi get him out

  163. …how many outs are there? Gameday’s telling me one but Suzyn just said two.

  164. Troll Hunter says:

Im so glad we didn’t trade for a pitcher today!!!!! If Andy has another “setback” good luck in a 7 game play off series with CC, Kuroda, Nova and Hughes. Worst four man rotation by alot compared to the Rangers, Angles, Tigers and Yankees.

  165. Tom Zig says:

Remember when Ivan Nova was good?

  166. your mom says:

Who the F is Lew Ford?

  167. Heisenberg's Hat says:

I guess there was no reason for me to fight traffic to get home for this game.

  168. Arya says:

He just has no control. It’s been that way all year. They need to send him down like last year. Too bad we didn’t trade for a veteran starter.

  169. Karl Krawfid says:

Going Rick Ankiel on us now.

  170. Widget says:

That was Lew Ford’s first hit since 2007.

  171. MartinRanger says:

    I want to stab things.

Toss-up between the naysaying trolls and Nova.

  172. Ethan says:

Nova get the fuck out now. You have nothing. Just. get. out.

  173. Mike N says:

Can we please pull him NOW?

  174. Garbage says:

I’d keep him in there and let him twist in the wind. Guy wants to be taken out,

  175. Cy Pettitte says:

seriously, fuck Nova. Send him down tomorrow. Don’t wanna have to see this garbage on my TV anymore.

  176. Cuso says:

    Boos raining the f@ck down

  177. DERP says:

I am done criticizing him. Just take him out.

  178. Troll Hunter says:

Send Nova down!! He apparently needs a wake up call. Phelps can do better.

  179. ppiddy says:

Michael Kay might be saying it any minute:

“[Put Nova's name here] is like the little girl with the curl: he’s either very, very good or very very bad.”

  180. DT says:

Okay lets leave him in until the Orioles have a 10 run lead

  181. wow says:

please make it stop. at least while we’re in it…. this is taking complacency to a whole new level.

  182. Widget says:

Nice of Nova to help the Orioles improve their putrid run differential.

  183. Brian S. says:

August is going to be very painful. At least I will be bust the latter half of it.

    • Troll Hunter says:

you think august is going to be bad? How bad will it be when the Dirty Hooligan Red Sox catch the Yankees and win the division!!!

  184. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

Cashman needs to send a message to nova
Send him down not pena. Two weeks on the SWB BUSRIDE

  185. MartinRanger says:

This is seriously the year of the Worst Case Scenario. This team does nothing halfway.

  186. Cuso says:

Did the trade deadline pass already?

    Doc, fire up the Delorian!

    • jjyank says:

If we have a Delorian, we don’t need to make deadline trades. Just go grab the Ichiro, the Eric Chavez, Raul Ibanez, Derek Jeter, A-Rod, Teixeira, and Russell Martin from several years ago and replace them with the present day ones. BOOM.

  187. Mr. Pink says:

I’m really upset we didn’t acquire anyone significant at the deadline. I really feel like its going to bite us in the butt either during the regular season or the post-season.

    • Mattchu12 says:

We acquired Joba Chamberlain and will still be picking up some guy named Sabathia, I think he is a lefty, and then another lefty named Pettitte or something.

Oh, and that third base guy. I think we’ll be just fine.

  188. Brian S. says:

He hasn’t been good since the start in Fenway.

  189. Bunt Gardner says:

WTF?? I was gone one fucking inning!

  190. DERP says:

There is no one to call up. We are stuck with Nova until Andy gets back. He is not getting sent down.

  191. MartinRanger says:

I’m sorry but no one saw this shitshow coming hours ago when the Yankees passed on Dempster.

    So seriously, can the second-guessing.

    • Troll Hunter says:

can the second guessing do what? PITCH? I hope so. Now pitching for the Yankees….SECOND GUESSING!

  192. DT says:

Ivan Nova has a 5+ ERA in 3 of the 4 months. 3rd starter my ass.

  193. Athenian says:

The question now is, can the Yankees fend off the A’s and or Angels to get a wild card. This team is in a serious funk and will be in second place by mid Aug. Sad.

  194. Christopher says:

It was nice we made that guy whose been playing down in Mexico to get a hit and score a run. The Really Generous Yankees!

  195. Bartolo's Colon says:

    what happened to this team?

  196. Mr. Pink says:

Please skip Nova’s next start. It looks like he’s either fatigued or needs a mental break.

  197. Nice Scheister says:

Anything less than back to back to back homeruns to tie the game will be a disappointment.

  198. ppiddy says:

After Paulie said the Orioles have had trouble scoring runs this season … BAM!!!

Maybe Nova’s throwing the game? Does he have a gambling problem like Pete Rose?

  199. stuart a says:

granderson cannot even spell off speed.

the yankee offense if they do not score any more runs tonight is a joke.

i think Nova has 14 more extra base hits given up then any other AL pitcher, that is a scary stat.

blow a 5 run lead in a blink of an eye is hard to do. right now this team cannot do anything right. i expect them to come back but lose by 1 par for the course…..

  200. The Troll says:

Me thinks a Nova demotion is right around the corner.

  201. Get Phelps Up says:

If Freddy was pitching like this, he’d already have been replaced. Send Nova down, put Phelps in the rotation. At least for now.

    • Tom says:

Probably not. Girardi used his long man to pitch a little over an inning yesterday.

How does he get 7 innings out of this pen with 3 specialists, 3 one inning guys and a long man who might not even be available.

Getting rid of Qualls was a good start but there is still one too many specialist in the pen – either make Logan a 1 inning guy as well and put Phelps back into the true long man role, or clear out one of the specialists and call up someone like Warren for long relief.

  202. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

Warren and john maine to name a few

  203. Tom says:

Good grief… he had Reynolds 0-2 again and threw another slider down the middle (again) and was fortunate to get a groundout

Did he not remember doing the same thing last inning which set that inning off?

  204. DERP says:

Tillman is straight garbage though, so that is nice.

  205. Erica says:

    Ummmmmm interesting game. Interesting.

  206. Widget says:

Yankees are still coming back to win this game.

  207. Andy Pettitte's Fibula (formerly Manny's BanWagon) says:

Nice of Nova to shit the bed with the Yankees needing a strong pitching performance with Teix and Arod out of the lineup.
    .

  208. Cuso says:

The only thing left is for someone to get semi-injured tonight.

    Captain?

  209. James A says:

How long would it take Phelps to be stretched out? He seems like he has to be one of their 5 best options at this point

  210. Christopher says:

Got a lot of outs left.

  211. MartinRanger says:

    Voldemort still cares!

  212. Mike N says:

All right! Let’s get back in this!

  213. Mr. Pink says:

I’m really hoping the Orioles, Rays and Red Sox just go away but I know it won’t happen.

  214. Hummingbird S. says:

so this is how choking a big division lead feels..

  215. RBC says:

What happened???? I go to wash my hair and the Orioles score five runs???? It was only 20 minutes.

  216. Hummingbird S. says:

all of a sudden the offense sucks against the awful pitcher… this team is mentally weak

  217. Troll Hunter says:

Man stranded on second????? NO way not the Yankees!!!!

  218. Christopher says:

    It’s still July, nabobs.

  219. 30 pitches in the first…30 pitches since. This game is all on Nova don’t get me wrong. But The bats have to do a better job then making Tillman throw 15 pitches per inning after a 5 run first.

  220. wow says:

    I’m done with this.

  221. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

Double next two hitter can not move him off the base to third.

  222. teddy says:

fire cashman, get a real general manager please

    • RBC says:

Its not Cashman… its the Yankees franchise itself.

You gotta remember that this is a business…. the Yankees need to justify selling $2000 seats. Therefore, Cashman is forced to sign big name players – even if they are at the end of their careers – because it’ll bring in the hedge fund managers and tourists that buy obscenely priced tickets.

  223. Mike N says:

Has Ichiro lost a lot of his bat speed? Even on the homer last night, he looked like was way behind the pitch, and somehow flicked his wrists at the last moment to go the other way. That’s how it looked on the ground out just now, too. Or is that just how he swings?

    • Mr. Pink says:

He’s 38. We’re lucky if he hits .250 the rest of the way. Yankees like to trade for washed up players at the deadline (Kearns, Berkman, Wood, Ichiro). One day they’ll actually trade for someone good.

      • DT says:

Liek granderson? Oh we’ll complain about him too for striking out too much. Or Arod? Wait he’s overpaid and not clutch.

  224. Hummingbird S. says:

so cashman got an out machine in Ichiro and a backup NL 3rd basemen… way to solidify the team!

    • DT says:

You and teddy should go jerk each other off while crying about cashman.

      • DERP says:

He has a point. If Cashman didn’t personally injure Rodriguez and Gardner, then he wouldn’t need these guys.

        • Hummingbird S. says:

How does that work? I thought GM made trades to improve their teams, not because they hurt their own players and want to replace them.

  225. Karl Krawfid says:

Way to get em in Yanks!

  226. Jersey Joe says:

Reply to this comment if you are currently allowing your pet to do his business on pictures of Ivan Nova.

    I am.

  227. Brian S. says:

Someone inject Pettitte with all the HGH.

  228. Tom says:

Off topic, but Beckett just got pulled in the 3rd inning with some sort of injury.

Sadly this might actually help Boston.

  229. DERP says:

Having A-Rod and Gardner there would have been nice.

  230. Erica says:

I love when everyone here gets all crazy-like.

  231. Cuso says:

Ibanez, Palmiero and Thome answer for trivia?

  232. Bartolo's Colon says:

granderson is just horrendous out there

  233. Brian S. says:

I know he caught that but WTF LOL Granderson.

  234. Get Phelps Up says:

How many non-ledge jumpers are even here anymore? Like 5?

  235. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

    Tomorrow
    Pena and Nova sent down
Ortiz called up Phelps in Novas spot
    Ortiz insurance for long relief.

  236. Bartolo's Colon says:

i am really hoping that cashman/giradi/etc grow a set this off season and get him the hell out of cf

  237. RetroRob says:

I’m guessing this is Nova’s worst start of his career, even if he makes it a few more innings without giving up a run. Can’t remember him giving up eight runs.

  238. Mr. Pink says:

I’m not loving Granderson’s reads and defense in CF. He looks like a girl chasing down a frisbee. I think it’s time to move him to RF next year if we decide to extend him.

    • RetroRob says:

…or left, depending on who is playing right.

      • Mr. Pink says:

Would love Bourjos (trade) in left, Gardner in center and Granderson in right. Gee having Yoenis Cespedes or Jorge Soler would’ve made this a whole lot easier. But alas this generation of Yankee management refuses to make a splash to improve their team.

  239. Davey Vecchia says:

Should have traded Jesus Montero, Manny Banuelos, Dellin Betances, and Ivan Nova for Flex Hernandez.

Sure you might give them a bright young future of pitchers but… imagine

King Felix, CC, Pettitte, Kuroda, Hughes

  240. Jersey Joe says:

    Losing 8-5.

    In the third.

    Didn’t we trade A. J.?

  241. Christopher says:

“Well, there are three things that the average man thinks he can do better than anybody else. Build a fire, run a hotel and manage a baseball team.” -Rocky Bridges

  242. Karl Krawfid says:

Not to mention this Yankee team isn’t clutch worth a damn. I should just go to the gym early today.

  243. Brian S. says:

Steal Pena, steal! You don’t have an appendix weighing you down!

  244. Mike N says:

    Pena! You da’ man!

  245. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

    Send pena please.

  246. DERP says:

    Don’t send Pena on Wieters.

  247. DERP says:

Will Derek Jeter even get another walk?

  248. Mr. Pink says:

AJ Burnett has put a curse on the Yankees after being traded that curses one Yankee pitcher a year so that they pitch as bad as AJ. This year it’s Nova. Next? Who knows?

  249. Cuso says:

    Dogs and cats….living together……mass hysteria!!

  250. Heisenberg's Hat says:

At least it wasn’t a double play.

  251. DERP says:

If it makes anyone feel any better, Homer Bailey just blew a six run lead to the Padres.

    • Mr. Pink says:

That doesn’t make me feel better about anything. Replace Homer Bailey with Josh Beckett and Padres with Tigers and then you’ve got my interest.

  252. Erica says:

Why does Granderson strike out so much?

  253. Karl Krawfid says:

Granderson. Just keep sitting on fastballs man.

  254. Brian S. says:

    Granderson blows.

  255. Cuso says:

Something is up with Granderson’s swing. Wonder what’s up with him.

  256. Heisenberg's Hat says:

It feels like Curtis strikes out at least twice per game. I know that’s not really true, but it feels like it it.

    • Heisenberg's Hat says:

      is

    • TomH says:

When I was a kid Mantle struck out 140+ times one year, 1957. Now that was a very great year for him and you didn’t mind all those so’s. Granderson averages more than 140 so’s a season, but he’s also not hitting .365 with a .500+ OBP. So there’s not as much payoff for the so’s as with Mantle’s.

  257. Mr. Pink says:

Granderson is striking out way too much this year. Geez. Make some contact.

    • Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

Kevin long ruined him all he does not is swing for the fences

      • Hummingbird S. says:

No. Long saved Granderson’s career and probably got his next monster contract.

      • CUYanks says:

He struck out plenty in Detroit, too. It’s just who he is.

      • Heisenberg's Hat says:

I don’t care if he swings for the fences when the count is in his favor. He just needs to be smarter with two strikes. The swing looks just as long with two strikes, and a lot of his swinging strikes seem to be not even close to making contact. Which means he needs to think about making contact instead of homering when the count is not in his favor.

  258. Athenian says:

wow… return home to 8-5 and the promptly disappearing offense. Ugh. This is becoming painful.

  259. Hummingbird S. says:

We can’t really blame the offense here… they are facing a future HOFer after all.

  260. DERP says:

    2.93 xFIP for Nova today.

    :djparty

  261. Cuso says:

Wow, the AL East is down this year maybe?

    Nahhhh…..

    • Kramerica Industries says:

      Baseball in general is down.

There are no great teams this year, anywhere. Tons of good teams, none great.

This is why it’s just as easy to envision the Yankees going all the way, or flaming out big-time in the ALDS, or flaming out before the regular season even ends.

I love when parity is mentioned as an issue in baseball. Compare MLB to the NBA or something, and parity fucking abounds.

      • Cuso says:

Yeah,MLB has way more parity than NBA or NFL no matter what anyone says.

I dunno about NHL because I won’t watch hockey, but it seems they have different teams in the Finals every year.

  262. Ppiddy says:

Rewind – we were up 5-0 and Mark Reynolds had an 0-2 count on him with 2 outs. This is after Nova struck out two. Who would have thunk 7 runs to come? Strange.

Mark Reynolds reminds me of Rob Deer. Anyone remember Rob Deer? An absolute strikeout monster!

    • The Troll says:

Is that one of Curtis Granderson’s many pseudonyms?

    • Deep Thoughts says:

He was a–if not the only–Founding Member of the Three True Outcomes Society.

    • Ppiddy says:

According to wiki: Deer held the American League record for strikeouts in a season (186 strikeouts in 1987) until being passed by Jack Cust in 2008, and had at least 140 strikeouts on seven occasions.

Hmnn Jack Cust. Let’s bring him up! LOL!

  263. DERP says:

    Take him out.

  264. Kramerica Industries says:

Why is Nova STILL out there?

    • Erica says:

We don’t have Chad Qualls to relieve him anymore.

    • Mike N says:

Because his pitch count isn’t bad, and they need him to eat up some innings.

    • Tom says:

Because the Yankee bullpen is designed for 3 innings of work, maybe 4 and Girardi/Cashman can’t seem to figure out what Phelps’ role is.

With Phelps working yesterday is there anyone in the pen who can go more than 1 inning tonight. The trio of Rapada/Eppley/Logan gives you maybe 2 innings unless you expose them to some unfavorable matchups and then you have 3 one inning guys… basically trashes the whole pen with a day game tomorrow.

  265. Mike N says:

That was a fucking batting practice pitch.

  266. Brian S. says:

    LOLBANEZ. Fuck off Raul.

  267. your mom says:

    Ivan “Doubles” Nova

  268. Karl Krawfid says:

    LOL at this game.

Worst stretch of Yankee baseball I have seen in a while.

    • The Troll says:

Careful, don’t say that. The non gloomy-doom-boomers will have your head! The Yankees only play top notch baseball!!!!!

      • DERP says:

Everyone agrees we aren’t playing great. Sorry if we think that the 85 game sample is more representative of our true talent level than the 15 game sample.

        • stop with the logic you! it’s not allowed when the team’s playing poorly. If you comment doesn’t include Fire Cashman, Fire Girardi, or something about how shitty the team is then you’re not going to fit in.

        • Guns of the Navrone says:

That 85 game sample was skewed by 20-7 June which included 10 game winning streak.

        • The Troll says:

Yeah, I hear that one pretty often as well . . . I’m not talking about the June Yankees. Nobody is, well, maybe you are. The July (and possibly Augustine) Yankees have been atrocious. With an aging, inconsistent lineup, one that is terribly prone to streaking, who’s to say that those two teams are anything alike? I’m honestly not too worried about the pitching but it’s the offense that has me stressed. I, for one, don’t believe that a bottom-of-the-order consisting of Jones, Ibanez, Chavez, Suzuki, Martin, Stewart, Nix, McGehee, etc. will conquer any kind of mountain. The one thing that appears to be true for this team is this: when Cano is on, the team wins. If Cano’s hot the team looks phenomenal. But . . . Cano seems so hacky this season that I’m not entirely sure what to make of him. . . . . Blah, blah, blah, my mind’s a mess . . . Bottom line, the offense is far too inconsistent to make a run for another title. No upgrades were made. They’re not winning the World Series. With this current lineup, I guarantee you that. If I’m proven wrong, and I welcome that notion with open arms as I do truly love this team, I will allow Mike to give me a lifetime ban from his site. No championships with this offense. You, my friend, can book that.

      • Bunt Gardner says:

The hyperbole never stops with you, does it?

    • Athenian says:

in a while? Since May/early June – that was a mere 30 days ago, very short time frame in baseball.

  269. see not much has changed while I went to do other things…

  270. Hummingbird S. says:

Girardi really wants to lose this one… just keep Nova in.

  271. Bartolo's Colon says:

i don’t think we can ever get raul out of the god damn of. gardner is out for the year, we pick up ichiro, swisher gets hurt, swisher comes back, tex get hurt, what is next?

  272. Ppiddy says:

Nova keeps throwing the same awful pitch over and over. A hanging slider right over the plate! It’s like a mediocre fastball in batting practice!

  273. DERP says:

Weren’t Nova and Burnett really close friends?

  274. Mr. Pink says:

Anyone feeling a Gardner-LF Victorino-CF Shin Soo Choo-RF outfield next year, assuming we sign Victorino and trade for Choo?

  275. DT says:

I guess sticking with Nova is Girardi’s symbol of giving up…

    • Erica says:

You know how he stands by his players!

      • Deep Thoughts says:

He’s only at 80 pitches, he’s in the strike zone, he’d rather the guy ended on a positive note, and he’s got to show some faith in him as a key part of his rotation. There’s no mystery here except for the Short Attention Span Theatre poop-flinging monkeys.

        • Hummingbird S. says:

Really positive to allow 9 runs in 5 innings. Bet he’s feeling great, especially with that final run allowed.

      • JonS says:

His notebook says that if a pitcher gives up 5+ runs in an inning, they are89% more like to throw a shutout the rest of the game.

        #SabithiaRules

  276. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

At this point bean weiters and put him on first

  277. Alkaline says:

Also, a bit off topic, but I’m going to pull out my Walter White by stating 3 words to all of you who say hell with the austerity budget:

    Unsustainable Business Model

    • TomH says:

The unsustainable business model is the notion that MLB will benefit by reducing the success of the Yankees in order to obtain some sort of parity.

  278. Ppiddy says:

THROW HIM THE HANGER. There we go. LOL. Nova, you are special tonight.

  279. Karl Krawfid says:

    LOL @ Bryce Harper haha

  280. MannyGeee says:

Nolan Ryan is on MLBN stroking himself off on live TV for being the backup plan for the Ryan Dempster sweepstakes (?)….

And oh yeah, GW Bush right next to him taking in the sights, trying not to look at the camera and yell ‘Baba Booey Baba Booey Howard Sterns Penis!!!!!’

    • Athenian says:

      That is FUNNY!!!!!!

      • MannyGeee says:

Oh I am not about politics AT ALL…. But GW bush is one of the best American figures of the past 20 year if for no other reason, the comedic aspect….

He kept looking at the camera but not looking… And then 1/2 looking 1/2 smirking. Truly classic…

  281. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Wow, we’re really stinking up the joint now, huh?

  282. Mr. Pink says:

You guys think Nova, Nunez and another prospect could have gotten us Greinke?

  283. DERP says:

He can’t put Lew Ford away. This is really happening.

  284. Ppiddy says:

Paulie: “Nova threw a lot of hanging sliders tonight.”

    LOL. No shit.

  285. TomH says:

Ford must be a pretty scary guy for Nova.

  286. Brian S. says:

Will I be labeled a troll if I say that I am legitimately worried about our playoff chances?

  287. Athenian says:

WOW. After shooting their wad in a 3 pump dump 1st inning, the Yankees have 2 hits. Wonder what will be the first comment tonight in the post game “tip the cap”, “we had good swings”, “nova kept us close”…The way the Yankees are playing, I just want to punch the first person I see.

  288. Widget says:

Nova, it’s Lew Ford not Gerald Ford.

  289. Erica says:

    Get him out. Now.

  290. Kramerica Industries says:

Oh look – another 2 out RBI hit, as this game slides further and further out of reach.

I guess with all the shitty games the Yankees have played of late, they finally got the game where they’re getting their asses straight up handed to them.

  291. Heisenberg's Hat says:

Throwing strikes to Wilson Betemit is a complete waste of time.

  292. Athenian says:

Look at the bright side, this performance from Nova is exactly what Dempster would have given.

Break out the brooms this series is over.

  293. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

    9 runs
Time to ride the bus bring up ortiz

  294. Ppiddy says:

Wow. I don’t think I’ve seen anyone pitch this poorly in a while.

I say just leave Nova in. Set a record for shittiest pitching performance.

    Oh wait … A STRIKEOUT!!!!!!!!!!

  295. Rick C says:

well keeping Nova in clearly joe is thinking…. I dont know what the fuck Joe is thinking….

  296. DERP says:

I would have put in the LOOGY against Betemit. His splits are ridiculous.

  297. Heisenberg's Hat says:

Nova should just take one for the team at this point. Unless the team scores multiple runs in this inning, but right now they show no evidence of scoring and making it close.

    • Rick C says:

Keeping nova in is like waiving the white flag. The team will NOT respond to that kind of message. Joe needs to figure out if he actually wants to win the game

  298. Mr. Pink says:

The Nova bandwagon was nice to ride. Now he’s coming back to earth. He never was a top prospect. It’s time to accept that he’s simply not a good pitcher and move on.

  299. DERP says:

It’s okay guys. We have Phil Hughes tomorrow to avoid the sweep.

  300. Kramerica Industries says:

Right now, the division lead feels like a slow-assed basketball game, where one team had a 25 point lead and it is slowly, slowly, slowly but surely getting eaten away at.

Of sure, in a vaccum, 5.5 games feels great. With added context, that is half of what the lead was, what, 10 days ago? This is a rapidly enveloping shitfest that, if not ended soon, will result in this team once again looking up at someone else in the standings before too long. They have it in them to turn it around, but they inspire absolutely no confidence at this time.

I mean, when a 5-0 lead after one inning, at home, turns into a 7-5 deficit before the bats come up again, what kind of confidence can you have? When one side thrives, the other fails. No jiving right now.

  301. MannyGeee says:

    Wow, this is a clusterfuck…

  302. DERP says:

Raul and Eric need to do something here.

  303. your mom says:

Ciriaco vs Verlander right now. Bases loaded.

  304. flamingo says:

I was out the entire day and just got in… what on earth is going on in this game? Box score looks pretty ugly.

  305. Tom says:

Nova finally threw Reynolds a 2 strike slider out of the zone (or at the bottom of it)…. if he does that in the 2nd inning, no runs score that inning.

The scary thing is he’s probably been lucky to have given up only 9 runs given how many fastballs and sliders he has left center-center.

  306. teddy says:

let nova finish the game, no point in using the pen

  307. DERP says:

One of the worst defenders in baseball just made a great play. Kill me.

  308. Widget says:

Meanwhile Verlander is pitching like shit against Boston. Great night of baseball.

So sick of Pedro Ciriaco exisiting.

  309. chilango says:

old, overpaid, overhyped and overmatched. see what happens when you have to play AL teams?

  310. Guns of the Navrone says:

Nova looking more and more like a top-of-the-rotation starter every day.

    – Something I read on RAB once

  311. DERP says:

Everyone remember this thread when we win the division.

  312. your mom says:

    This team. . . . . .

  313. Cy Pettitte says:

could this team be any more predictable? Tillman throwing up easy zero after zero.

  314. JonS says:

    Put in Joba!

  315. Widget says:

Just keep walking people Verlander. It’s cool.

  316. MannyGeee says:

    Could use a hit here….mfuckers

  317. Rick C says:

5 bucks says we don’t push across another run tonight

  318. Mr. Pink says:

Verlander getting worked by Boston. CY Young and MVP my ass! When is the last time that guy pitched a dominant game against a good offense?

  319. Bartolo's Colon says:

pretty sad that tillman is tearing this team apart right now. i hope we have better luck against the bp

  320. Athenian says:

Orioles will score 3 more runs before the Yankees mount some come back only to lose 12-8.

  321. Mr. Pink says:

Meredith Marakovitz. Those legs. So hot.

  322. stuart a says:

how can things get worse but they are….

    put joba in binder boy.

logan sucks over 4 era… his honeymoon is over……..

offense back in a coma, they had 1 inning… they have score double digits very few times this year….

swisher spells off speed just like granderson………no friggin clue……

  323. RBC says:

    Anyone watching the Olympics?

  324. MannyGeee says:

Don’t look now, but the New Look Phillips (don’t call them the Phillies, they’re grown up now) might actually get Cliff Lee a win….

  325. DERP says:

Really leaving Logan in against a righty. Where is Eppley?

  326. Ppiddy says:

Kay and Paulie aren’t even paying attention to the game. LOL! They are having a good ‘ol time.

  327. Mr. Pink says:

    And I’m free! Freefallin’!

  328. Ppiddy says:

Thanks for replaying that Grand Slam from Davis, YES.

Wow, was that an awful hanger!

  329. Ppiddy says:

I wonder if Storage Wars is on.

  330. DERP says:

Would be nice to score here.

  331. Mr. Pink says:

I really hope they at least win tomorrow. I’m really not in the mood for this team to go through a losing streak.

  332. DERP says:

    Where the hell was Nix?

  333. Erica says:

This deficit is not insurmountable. They’ll do it.

    • Rick C says:

what team have you been watching lately? Either that or I’ll have whatever you’re having because clearly it must be good shit.

      • Erica says:

Well, being negative didn’t get us anywhere, did it?

        • DERP says:

You are being too nice. Tell him to go fuck himself.

          • Erica says:

Nahhhhhh, I’m gonna keep on ridin’ the Happy Train here, just to be obnoxious.

          • Heisenberg's Hat says:

That feels like something that would be against commenting rules.

            • jjyank says:

Nah, cursing is okay. RAB has pretty lax rules, compared to most sites. It’s things like racial/sexual slurs and consistent personal attacks that will get you banned. Throwing out a few F-bombs every now and again is cool as far as I understand. Though Mike probably wouldn’t be happy if it was a regular occurrence.

  334. stuart a says:

o”neil has no clue. acts like the yanks are a offensive juggernaut. has he ever looked at the statistics… thinks Bernie Williams is still on the team.

a reputation announcer, goes based on players reputation not the present situation…

  335. DERP says:

This umpire shouldn’t leave the stadium in one piece.

  336. Arya says:

Tomorrow’s game is as close to must win as it gets for us. We have to stop the momentum of the Os. The Sox are charging as well. Fly ball Phil is going to have to get it done. With this offense you don’t know if they’ll score 5 in one inning or 0 for 15 consecutive innings.

    • Widget says:

Assuming they both win, the Orioles and Red Sox will both be 5-5 in their last 10. So yeah that’s hardly momentum.

  337. stuart a says:

going down like sheep. bullpen are all specialist(LOOGY etc.) offense is the same. ichiro, chavez, ibanez, and jones only hit pitching on 1 side..

    at least that is consistent………..

ichiro has been avg at best since here. 1 measly hit a game, bo hits with risp with 6 chances, the price was right but he is what his stats show a under 300 OBP…..for the clueless that is bad for a guy with 5 homers……

  338. DERP says:

    lol at us.

  339. DERP says:

ball bounce off the plate and hits Martin in the jaw. sweet

  340. Erica says:

I love Stuart A. Reading his posts are like taking a Magic School Bus trip inside the mind of a truly psychotic person. It’s great. Keep going, buddy.

  341. Heisenberg's Hat says:

    What happened to offense? Jesus.

  342. Karl Krawfid says:

    Mike Trout is the MVP.

  343. FIPster Doofus says:

So tired of hearing Kay break out the “Mauer with power” line every time the Yankees play the Orioles.

    • Kramerica Industries says:

Kay has a ton of those phrases that he beats into the ground, pounds with a shovel, jumps on, and then beats some more.

I swear, if I hear “the old Jeff Nelson move” one more time…

  344. DERP says:

Is this Cody Eppley or someone else? It looks nothing like what he looks like in any other picture.

    http://espn.go.com/mlb/player/.....ody-eppley

  345. Rick C says:

    infield single…. It’s Rally Time!

  346. DERP says:

I like how Troy Patton’s picture on Google is his mugshot.

  347. OldYanksFan says:

    TROLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  348. DERP says:

    brutal

  349. Heisenberg's Hat says:

Curtis is getting worse. I know he’s always struck out, but this is getting scary.

  350. Karl Krawfid says:

    Ugly.

  351. Nathan says:

On my way home from a meeting I heard on the radio our Yanks were up 5-zip in the first. By the time I get home, we’re losing 9-5?

Geez. When it rains, it pours. Nobody got injured too did they?

  352. DERP says:

Now we have an excuse for Joba to start head hunting. This game can be salvaged.

  353. chilango says:

you could see this coming. .200 with runners on base even with a lot of dingers and great pitching is not gonna cut it. Last 3 games the pen choked, tonight it’s Nova. They can’t hit good pitching and their pithing isn’t good enough. The Yanks are out in the first round, as usual.

  354. Brian S. says:

Don’t worry. The Yankees won’t retaliate.

  355. Karl Krawfid says:

    Yep Swish is healthy!

  356. Athenian says:

I love the number of “power hitters” in this line up that strike out more than they get on base. Best part is these .240 power hitters are rewarded for their streakiness. Gotta get me a job like that.

    • jjyank says:

I’ve always wanted to be a weather man, personally. You get paid to just say what the best guess is, and if it’s wrong? Nobody cares! Gotta be the easiest.

      • Athenian says:

AND your suits are paid for, you have a personal assistant, and people actually rate you hire for being a dumb ass. I am with you. THAT might be the best job out there.!!! Good call.

    • DT says:

Obviously OBP and stuff doesn’t matter

  357. Arya says:

Robbie didn’t like that. Joe should put Joba in to throw a 100 mph into someone’s back.

  358. DERP says:

    lol at no Andruw here

  359. Brian S. says:

And he leaves Ibanez in to face the lefty.

  360. Brian S. says:

What did you expect Girardi? You fucking moron.

  361. chilango says:

Granderson fans…again., what the fuck is he doing batting 2d? And Swisher chokes…now it’s two on two out any guess as to what’s gonna happen?

  362. DERP says:

Girardi has already mailed this one in. I don’t normally criticize him, but christ that was awful.

  363. teddy says:

fire giradri too, he not playing to win as well

  364. Hummingbird S. says:

nice of girardi to give up with 2 in scoring position

  365. CUYanks says:

Meanwhile, AJ Burnett with a no-hitter through five in the NL Central…

  366. DT says:

Why wasn;t Jones pinch hitting? ugh Girardi

  367. DERP says:

Betemit can die a slow death and burn in hell.

  368. Ichy and Irok hello to number 28 says:

Where did ichiros big arm go? Guy used to have a cannon.

  369. Karl Krawfid says:

Yankees have 0 fucking walks today. 0.

    • DT says:

Outside the Doubrant games they haven’t been walking at all. And some guy said yesterday that they need to swing more…

  370. Athenian says:

I can’t wait to hear the bullshit from Girardi on his misperception of this team right now.

  371. Brian S. says:

    Bean this Quintanilla douche.

  372. Karl Krawfid says:

And Burnett is trolling us with his 5 inning no hitter.

  373. stuart a says:

swisher is friggin slow. he is another 1 of the softball players on this team. again ibanez cannot hit lefties and andruw cannot hit righties..

this team is a mess. nothing since the first inning. if these guys think they are in the playoffs they are delusional, they need to get out of this friggin funk.

when o’neil and kay add zero to the game in 3 hours can they get some announcers who at least look at stats…….

  374. Billy says:

9 runs to the FRICKEN O’S? Nova is clearly not taking this serious at all. Nova needs to get his shit together, demote his lazy cocky pitcher to AAA like they did a few years back and let him think of how he is a number 2 starter

  375. stuart a says:

ichiro has had about 7 guys or more run on him and thrown out 1 and the umps fucked it up…

    only in mlb..

  376. DERP says:

    Nice job by Cody.

  377. DERP says:

    Cut Rapada

  378. Karl Krawfid says:

    Welcome to rock bottom folks.

    Goodnight.

  379. JonS says:

    Are you f’n serious?

  380. Brian S. says:

Fucking hit someone Rapada you useless fuck.

  381. Erica says:

    Ohhhhhhhh

  382. Billy says:

If you are rooting against Burnett right now, you suck.

  383. Billy says:

Is there a trade deadline to trade managers?

  384. DERP says:

I haven’t quite given up on this game. Anyone with me? Erica?

    • Erica says:

      Still here! WE GOT THIS.

    • DT says:

      Weirder shit has happened

    • sangreal says:

      sure, why not

    • Brian S. says:

I’m just hoping for stat padding.

    • Tom says:

I was still in it when it was 9-5, but for some dumbass reason Girardi will live for the left-left, right-right matchup on defense… but then on offense continue this misguided belief that Raul Ibanez can hit a lefty.

Even if Schowalter goes to a righty Jones vs righty is far better than Ibanez vs lefty….

How can Girardi continue to screw up basic platoon pinch hitting given how damn paint by #’s this lineup is. (in terms of righty lefty platoons)

They also need to abandon one of their specialists… three specalists in the pen means you have to stick it out with your starter longer as the only one who can normally pitch more than an inning without being exposed is Phelps

  385. DERP says:

    LOL at pinch hitting now

  386. stuart a says:

ouch. when you think it cannot get worse guess what?

    it can.

nothing going right. yanks BA RISP is on fire as usual. Rapada and logan are pray pitchers. you pray they get it done before they implode.

wow scary times Nix pinch hitting, baltimore must be scared… what are the odds he strikes out on a pitch in the dirt? 50%…

old, slow, specialist, and unclutch… what a friggin team of misfits….

  387. Billy says:

Let Joba get an at bat

  388. RBC says:

I’m no longer washing my hair during Yankees games. During the wash, the O’s score 5. During the rinse, the O’s score another 2.

  389. Rick C says:

To top it all off Burnett is no hitting the cubbies tonight and the yankees him to do it.

  390. stuart a says:

maybe granderson can get another strike out before the game is over. but astute mental midget yankee fans need to resign him now….

the guy is going to be 32 and has 1 more year on his deal. again ajax is better………………..

  391. Widget says:

those aren’t strikes. even the umps want to go home.

  392. Billy says:

Even if this team makes it to the play offs they are getting swept. CC chokes in the post season, Hughes shits his pants when he is pitching in the play offs, Nova is a basketcase.

  393. DERP says:

I have never been more confident about a game than I am about tomorrow’s game.

  394. JonS says:

So…are you going to play Joba or not? This game is lost. Let’s wait until we have a 1 run lead to put him in. yea, that’s be idea Girardi.

  395. stuart a says:

grandy is not more valuable then ajax.. no way…..58 rbis with all those homers. no speed on the bases, poor range.

ajax is more valuable 7 years younger, and much cheaper….

grandy is not that good this year………

    • Billy says:

Cash is stupid. Why would you ask for Granderson when they could have had Cabrera? Miggy already has 84 FUCKEN RBIS. We coulda put him on 3B and DH Arod so he doesn’t hurt his pinky

    • DT says:

Did you like forget how average AJax was in his first two season? Also forget that Grandy was a MVP candidate last year? I’m not even using advanced stats to prove my point because i know you don’t believe in them.

  396. stuart a says:

binder boy should play joba tonight get it out of the way. he will wait and throw him into a higher leverage situation like a dope he is……….

  397. Cuso says:

This team does have a tendency to shut it down when they score a bunch of runs in the first inning.

Doesn’t matter in the standings at the moment, but the Yankees offense can be victimized by “bully” tactics.

…meaning they come out swinging and puts runs on the board but if someone punches right back, they shut it down. I can remember at least 2 other games when it’s happened. Ironically, it doesn’t happen when they maintain the lead or keep it tied when the other team punches back.

But if the other gram’s counterpunch results in more runs than the Yanks initial punch, they haven’t come back. (And in the other two instances didn’t even score until token runs in the 9th).

  398. The Troll says:

Who would’ve thought a game that started with the Yankees exploding for 5 runs right out the gate would ultimately culminate in being one of the worst of the season and continue the downward trend into rock bottom 2.0?

    • chilango says:

I kinda thought it might. Nova gives up a lot of Xbase hits and the Yanks only have 2 players that hit for avg-Jeter and Cano. Granderson hits 2d and leads the league in Ks for fucks sake. Yanks are not as good as their record.

      • The Troll says:

Yup. Players that hit for average . . . Something this team seems to overlook in importance.

        • DT says:

I think not having Arod or Tex has more to do with it than people hitting for average. Average would mean less if the team was drawing walks, but they aren’t. Instead we have 3 guys on the border of .300 OBP playing for us.

  399. stuart a says:

5.5 games is nothing .. yanks print playoff tickets to early they will pay…

they are playing horrible right now and no reason to think they will play better.

situational hitting has been bad all year, why would it get better… logan, rapada, eppley, being strong options…….

  400. DERP says:

I wonder if stuart has an ellipsis key on his keyboard.

  401. Billy says:

this team is just terrible….cash thinks its 2005 and goes out of his way to get Jones, Chavez, A Rod, Teix….cash is the reason for our demise

  402. Billy says:

Ooooooooh shit Ramiro Pena comming up to hit!

  403. Erica says:

    Good times, guys!

  404. Brian S. says:

    GO CUBS

  405. DERP says:

    We are definitely winning tomorrow.

  406. DT says:

On a side note, all people complaining about the Yanks. Texas is in far deeper shit than we are.

  407. Billy says:

Genius Cash, send Ian Kennedy, Burnett and A-Jax away…..lets just give all the money to A Rod and Teix. Who needs pitchers when we got fricken Eppley?

    • DT says:

Wait wait, after last year you wanted to keep AJ Burnett? IPK and his 4+ ERA in the NL west sure would help us now right? People forget Ajax has not very good last year and average in his first year…Even then Grandy has been as good if not better for usin these 3 years.

      • AJ and Kennedy Stink says:

It doesn’t matter that they’re in the NL Central and NL West with Pitchers hitting, and National League-caliber lineups. You really want any of those clowns pitching in the AL East? That’s absurd. AJ had 3 years and shit the bed. And Kennedy, we’ve seen how pitchers who don’t throw hard in the AL East struggle. Less margin for error. Really have to be a stud with movement, location, and pitch sequence to have any success. Kennedy had a good year last year, but he is not a stud at any of those things. AJ Burnett? He doesn’t play nearly as many lineups that actually work the pitcher and make you make pitch after pitch after pitch. Grow up peter pan. Count Chocula.

    • Cuso says:

Kennedy is a bytch. How he won 21 games last year I’ll never know. It was a complete and utter fluke. What he is this year is closer to what he’ll always be.

Go be a D-back fan if you love Kennedy that much
      He’s a soft hutch.

  408. Athenian says:

Do you think that the age of this team is more of a factor in their inconsistency or just the general make up of the team – meaning the depth of the team puts too much pressure on the starters to stay healthy and perform better than they might otherwise do?

    • Tom says:

The issue is the increased specialization which has somehow become a desired roster construction. Some of it is due to injury but you now have 3 platoons on offense (DH, 3B, LF). With a 4 man bench (1 of which is a catcher) it means at any given time you have one side or the other completely spent (basically you start a game all righty or all lefty on the bench)

The bullpen is also far too specialized. Last year the Yankees had 1 specialist (Logan); this year 2 LOOGY’s became the default setting in spring training and then ROOGY’s were brought in.

Assuming you don’t want to use your closer when trailing, and possibly the setup guy…. who gives you the innings to keep the game close? Joba coming back helps but unless the Yankees get 6 innnings, Girardi is reliant on specialists doing more than they probably should.

  409. stuart a says:

girardi says the have been playing pretty well lately…

is he smoking something? they have lost 9 out of 12… lefties in the pen have been horrbile, lineup has been horrible, zero clutch hitting.

nova leads baseball in extra base hits.. but he has been pretty good this year. 4.50 era.. is junk.

    now the arod revisionism starts..

arod has sucked this year bottom line………….

    • DT says:

Right you rather have Chavez and Nix than a third basemen who is hitting around .280 and .360 OBP and .800+ OPS. I wished all our hitters would suck like Arod did.

    • Athenian says:

He doesn’t smoke. However, page 121 of the binder is filled with hilarious quotes to use out of context, such as “they have been playing well” when having their second 4 game losing streak in two weeks.

  410. The Troll says:

While their hot streak this year was certainly enjoyable, the Yankees’ shit-stained cold streaks have been unbearable. Rock bottom is never an applicable term for this team because the next day, the next game, they somehow find a way to lose with even more gusto and pizzazz. How can this team get better? Have the injuries buried this team or is there light at the end up the tunnel? I want to say that the team is not nearly this bad but this, to me, is exactly who they are. Streaky. Hot, hot, hot or frigid, bone-chillling, teeth-chattering, spine-numbing, deathly cold.

  411. Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

Meanwhile Burnett has a no hitter thru 8

  412. stuart a says:

dt arod is better then the rude at 3b, but that is meaningless.
arod has done jack this year…his slugging % is a joke, the guy cannot stay on the field, he dh’s almost 30% of the time.

the arod fandom are so delusional they cannot comprehend how friggin overpaid and underperforming he is….the guy makes $27 mill per yr. the guy is playing like a 8th best 3b in baseball while 3b is a horrible position; wright, beltre, panda, freese, middlebrooks, chipper, and others have been better then agod………..

  413. stuart a says:

nova smoking the same thing girardi has..

64 or so extra base hits but all is well. this guy is a moron…

8 straight games without a win… 6 walks last game in seattle he is clueless….

  414. Brian S. says:

    WOOOOOOO CUBS! FUCK YOU AJ!

Nova just told press that he “just got hit.” And “bad luck” was the main factor because he “threw strikes.” Oh, and he feels real good. That’s special. And everyone on this blog kills Sweaty Freddy and Fat Phil when they “get hit.”

    • Heisenberg's Hat says:

He feels good? What a relief.

    • AJ and Kennedy Stink says:

What do you want him to say? “I don’t know what I’m doing. I’m a deer in the headlights. To all future lineups that will face me, I have no confidence. I’d be surprised if I ever got another hitter out. I don’t feel good. I’m sad.”
It always cracks me up how people get so mad at comments managers and players make to the media to try and remain even keel during a long season. As if they would ever say what their real worries are to the media and everyone in the baseball following world. As if they’d really open themselves up to that type of criticism in every sports media outlet. This is the media we’re talking about her. Worthless shitbags who never got picked on the playground and quit sports at age 9 to become “journalists” – They tell stories for a living. They look to make stories out of nothing because they have to 365 days out of the year. Why would any normal-thinking human being open themselves up to a potential distraction like that. Do you really think Nova isn’t beating himself up about this deep down and when no one is around?

This happens every year with the Red Sox awarded a questionable win. They win 4-1 but when they call the game the Tigers had bases loade and was only in the top 6th

At least when the Yankees did it earlier this year it was after 7 full innings and they were up 8-0.

Also ends Verlander’s streak of 62 consecutive games of going at least 6 innings because they call it in the top 6th. I’d be pissed.
