Game 80: Stop the Streak

(J. Meric/Getty Images)

Last night’s loss to the Rays was a bitter pill to swallow, mostly because the Yankees managed to escape a truncated Freddy Garcia with a lead before the bullpen — and a rare Mark Teixeira error — turned it into a deficit. As you know, New York is in the middle of an eight-game losing streak at Tropicana Field, their longest such streak at a road stadium since dropping 15 in a row at The Ballpark in Arlington way back in the late-80s/early-90s. Here’s the starting nine…

SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
3B Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
RF Nick Swisher
DH Raul Ibanez
1B Eric Chavez
Russell Martin
LF Dewayne Wise

RHP Ivan Nova

Tonight’s game starts a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and MLB Network nationally. Enjoy.

  1. Robinson Tilapia says:

Whose idea was it to make the 4th of July on a Wednesday this year? Cashman failed.

DeWayne “Juggernaut” Wise in the lineup. Supernova is actually on the mound today. Let’s break this god-awful streak at this god-awful stadium.

  2. Adam B says:

  3. CP says:

    Here’s the starting nine…

    Technically, that’s the starting 10….

  4. Cuso says:

    I’m stuck with Staats/BA.

    Serenity now!!!

  5. Countryclub says:

Jeter has been hitting the ball in the air a lot over the past 4 or 5 games. Good to see.

  6. stuart j says:

The Yankees can’t win like this…all this run building through RISPNONFAIL, we need more empty base homers.

  7. Greg says:

Alex has had some good swings in this series

  8. Mike Axisa says:

You guys gotta knock off the stuart stuff.

  9. Will (the other one) says:

Alex victimized by a generous strike call. Don’t worry; Cano will make them pay.

  10. for the record, according to game day strike 3 to Alex was a bit inside.

  11. thaaaaaayankeeswin says:

    2 for 3 risp

  12. Wow, they’re just tattooing Shields out of the gate. I like it.

  13. Does Tex have terrible numbers against Shields, or is it just a day off?

  14. Mike Axisa says:

    Oh come on Robbie.

  15. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

WTF Robbie? Are you fucking serious?

  16. WTF Cano. If Shields settles down and doesn’t allow another run, I blame you.

  17. Rick says:

  18. Greg says:

Not an absolute big deal because no one else was on base to score, but annoying nonetheless

  19. Tom says:

Cano has to be one of the dumbest baserunners on the team… fantastic hitter and fielder, but he makes a lot of mistakes on the bases.

    • DERP says:

He’s an above average baserunner for his career.

      • Tom says:

        Doesn’t mean he’s a smart runner though.

He’s been picked off twice already this year and has made 6 outs on the bases this year (which is his 2nd highest yearly total with 1/2 a season to play)

        • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

He’s definitely inherited Posada’s role as king of the Yankee TOOTBLANs

  20. Cuso says:

He’s used to having Tex in the lineup. That’s why he thought there were 2 out.

  21. stuart a says:

cano is brain dead. FINE HIS ASS for that stupidity.

moaning about Arod gets old, it is obvious he friggin sucks..

  22. Countryclub says:

Didn’t cano do that earlier this yr? Someone did….

  23. Andrew says:

  24. Charles says:

Really Robbie? Not a big part of the game, but anytime you can get a guy like James Shields to throw more pitches you have to take it, hope that doesn’t bite us in the ass…

  25. Robinson Tilapia says:

Did that look as bad as it sounded?

  26. James A says:

At least Robbie was running hard when he thought there were 2 outs #silverlining?

  27. stuart a says:

greg no big deal. giving away outs is a minor issue..

why don’t they give away about 5 more tonight…….

cano is a dope, no baserunning accumen.. the anti Jeter on the bases and mistakes like that hurt teams…..

  28. Cuso says:

Easy, easy. Cano taketh away and then giveth later.

  29. Cuso says:

    Shields will retaliate. Guaranteed.

  30. jjyank says:

Just got here…Tilapia’s damn doppelganger had a difference at work today :P

    2 things.

    1. How’d the get the runs?

    2. I would like to officially take credit for the stuart explosions, as “stuart b”.

    • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

lead double by Jeter, RBI double by Grandy, RBI single by Cano

    • Jeter doubled to open the game(first pitch) Granderson Doubled him in, Arod K’d, Cano drove him in then forgot how many outs there were and got doubled off on a Swisher fly ball.

    • jjyank says:

Never mind on #2. Just say Mike tell us to stop. Sorry guys.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

      I HATED that job.

      • jjyank says:

I don’t mind it. It’s better than many other options, such as waitering. I thoroughly enjoy informing people that their accounts are all negative.

        • Servings not too bad, but if you serve bad food, or your restaurant has a poor managment structure it sucks so terribly.

          • jjyank says:

I was a waiter in high school, and I hated it. Though I only worked for 2 restaurants, so I’m sure there are good ones out there. I also like the more steady and predictable income from being a teller.

            • Predictable income is one of the reasons I’m doing what I’m doing now. I’m making less overall than I was as a waiter/delivery driver, but I know there isn’t going to be a week where I work 60hrs but barely clear a couple hundred bucks because everybody is on vacation. Which happened to me last summer.

              • jjyank says:

Yup. I did the pizza delivery thing too in college, and I made a lot of money in general, but I was tired of the weekends where I work like crazy only to get stiffed on half my tips and have it otherwise be slow.

I work at PNC right now, and they’re waaaayy cooler than TD Bank, where I worked in Jersey. I spend most of my day getting paid to comment here and practice my putting, since it’s a low-traffic branch.

                • Robinson Tilapia says:

Actually, worst job I had in college was the three days I spent working at the former Structure, now Express Men. AWFUL. Clothing retail is terrible.

                  • jjyank says:

I can imagine. I’d never even try that. I guess my worst job has to be TD Bank by default. Working till 8 on New Years eve, 5 on Christmas eve, Memorial Day, Labor Day, opening at 5 AM on Black Friday, and just generally having a Thursday-Monday work week doesn’t endear a man to his job.

                  • I’d never to clothing retail, especially in a high end mall boutique like that…you’re just asking for headaches.

  31. Will (the other one) says:

Yeah! That’ll teach you to be in the outfield while the Yankees run into a brainfart double play, Desmond Jennings.

  32. Robinson, before I forget, I was reading through the game thread when I got home from the movies last night. Your son has a Dalek onesie? That is the greatest thing ever. I want to get one for my god daughter, where’d you get it?

  33. DERP says:

    not this again. finish him!

  34. Hummingbird S. says:

Nova’s 4th pitch caught so much of the plate, how can an ump be so blind?

  35. DERP says:

There is like a 50% chance Nova walks Pena.

  36. Tom says:

Rays ballboy looking better than Pena at 1st…

  37. Zooboy says:

Luke Scott makes me appreciate the Yankee facial hair policy. “You’re a ballplayer, not a chia pet!”

  38. Greg says:

Damn Kenny, never thought you would have that joke in you.

  39. DERP says:

I literally loled. I never do that.

  40. jjyank says:

    Nice Nova. Keep it rolling.

  41. DERP says:

    Any Nets fans here?

  42. Greg says:

  43. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

    Dewayne Wise!!!@!

  44. Mike Axisa says:

Dewayne Wise’s bunt turned the season around.

  45. DERP says:

I think I know what Mike’s next tweet will be

  46. eephus_pitch says:

    Worst Sterling homer call ever?

    “Now there’s a Wise man”

  47. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Who needs gardner

  48. Hummingbird S. says:

Wise has been on a roll

  49. jjyank says:

Wise is making me look smart for picking him to be my “unexpected contributor that helps the Yankees get to the playoffs/win the world series” prediction.

    • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

Wise is making me look smart wise for picking him to be my “unexpected contributor that helps the Yankees get to the playoffs/win the world series” prediction.

  50. Tom says:

Was that swing almost Cano like? (epecially the follow through)

Not quite the same speed and ease and Cano but the finish reminded me of Cano.

  51. Rey22 says:

Dewayne Bonds out in LF for the Yanks.

  52. Dewayne is Wise says:

Move wise up to lead off.

  53. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Up 3-0. We already won.

  54. Brian S. says:

    Dewayne Wise 4 MVP

  55. Cy Pettitte says:

Wise slugging .543 now. lol wow.

  56. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Cue stuart a

  57. Hummingbird S. says:

A-Rod should not be anywhere near the top of the lineup

  58. DERP says:

What was the biggest play in Wise’s career: the catch that saved the perfect game or the bunt that jump-started the Yankees season?

  59. Athenian says:

Wow, without the juice, Alex just looks lost sometimes. Or I should say the long term affects of the juice make Alex look lost at the plate. His bat speed is more like that of someone in an Old Timers game.

    • jjyank says:

That’s just pure speculation, you know. He did just fine off the juice when he joined the Yankees up until a year or two ago. And you also have no idea what is causing his decline. Most likely just age in general. Most players aren’t who they once were on the wrong side of 35, does that mean they all are suffering withdrawals from juicing?

  60. eephus_pitch says:

This seems like as good a time as any to walk Sean Rodriguez.

  61. Greg says:

    A turf hit.

  62. Dewayne is Wise says:

    The ginger is killing us

  63. Hummingbird S. says:

bad throw by Martin.. a good throw and he’s out

  64. It doesn’t matter that neither Martin or Stewart hit, as long as they continue to be defensively great…

  65. Brian S. says:

    Terrible throw by Martin

  66. TampaYankee says:

I love Dewayne Wises hot streak!

  67. Cy Pettitte says:

damn, come on Martin. that was a perfect throw.

  68. Hummingbird S. says:

fucking Russel Martin…what a shitty baseball player

  69. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    You fucking kidding me, Russell?

  70. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

    dammit Martin, do something useful

  71. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Martin sucks

  72. Karl Krawfid says:

Fucking Martin. Wise is doing everything.

  73. MannyGeee says:

FAAAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!!! Decent throw, Martin just sorta muffed it.

  74. I don’t even know what to say…

  75. Widget says:

I really hate the rays. That is all.

    • New Girl says:

      Fuck the Rays.
Would it be sacrilege to say I hate them almost (not quite, but ALMOST) as much as the Red Sox?

  76. Brian S. says:

Get the fuck off my team Russ.

  77. jjyank says:

    Can Wise play catcher?

  78. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

  79. Greg says:

They need to win 4 this week.

    Cant blame Girardi for that

  80. Greg says:

They need to win 4 this week.

    Cant blame Girardi for that

  81. eephus_pitch says:

  82. I put that on Russ’s shoulders.

  83. Hummingbird S. says:

tie game, all thanks to that shitty catcher..

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

three hits and a walk don’t help either

      • Hummingbird S. says:

A decent catcher throws out that base stealer and a fairly mediocre one gets that out at the plate. With either, the Yankees are out of this inning with a 3 run lead.

What good is it to have a player that can’t hit or play D?

        • eephus_pitch says:

But Nova has to stop giving up hits to bad hitters. You can’t depend on outfield assists to bail you out.

          • jjyank says:

This. The out at the plate would have been a a really good play, that wasn’t a routine out. I can’t blame a non-routine out as the reason the Rays are scoring.

        • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

it sucks, but Nova did give up 3 hits and a walk. Russ could have (should have) helped bail him out, but it doesn’t change the fact Nova has sucked this inning.

    • jjyank says:

I don’t really put that much blame on Martin for the ball coming loose. Johnson shook it loose on the contact, this stuff happens.

Also, some of that “thanks” should be on Nova too. You know, he’s the one throwing the ball.

  84. Brian S. says:

    Gold glove Jeter.

  85. Karl Krawfid says:

  86. Pasta Stumbling Luis Sojo (formerly StanfordBen) says:

Whoa, why is everyone getting on Martin’s case? That seemed like a really tough play. Plus honestly I thought he might have been safe even with the tag, though they didn’t really emphasize that much on the replay.

    • MannyGeee says:

Called him out on the tag. Then the ball squirted out,,, out of his glove… So it’s on Martin.

      • Pasta Stumbling Luis Sojo (formerly StanfordBen) says:

Catchers get the ball knocked out of their glove on contact all the time. Plus this was a short hop. Doesn’t strike me as a particularly poor play, and in fact I think it would’ve been a particularly good play had he made it.

    • he might have been safe even with the tag

The official scorer disagrees with you. He took a RBI away from a home player to give Martin an error on the play.

  87. Mike Axisa says:

    What an awful pitch.

  88. MannyGeee says:

    God, Tampa is the WORST….

  89. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

For those who forgot, this team has Sean Rodriguez, Brooks Conrad, Elliot Johnson, and Jeff Keppinger.

  90. Tom says:

    3 singles = 3 runs…. freakin hate the Rays.

  91. Widget says:

Why WHY does it always seem like the rays beat us with teh crappiest players? Their team is a joke. my god I hate them.

  92. eephus_pitch says:

Nova could stop giving up hits to these bums any time. Martin should have held onto the ball, but that was still a hit.

    • Hummingbird S. says:

First hit of the inning was a fairly routine play that A-Rod couldnt make, now Chavez misses another one. They are playing awful D right now. And that’s not even talking about that motherfucker at catcher.

  93. Cuso says:

Martin’s left foot got stuck as he attempted to pirouette on contact. Bad stance in attempt to block plate. If he has his left leg not get stuck, he holds onto the ball.

  94. Greg says:

Again they needed 4 wins this week to feel good.

      • Greg says:

        Says me and the standings.

        • Pasta Stumbling Luis Sojo (formerly StanfordBen) says:

The standings say that if they win only 3 games this week they won’t feel good despite being a .600 team with a decent lead in the toughest division in baseball?

          • Greg says:

            I dont want a decent lead. I want a sizable lead. 5 games +

            • Greg says:

And the Yankees should want that too.

              • Pasta Stumbling Luis Sojo (formerly StanfordBen) says:

I’m not saying 4 wins isn’t better than 3 wins. But winning more games is always better, and that’s true of every game equally throughout the entire season (at least until playoff spots start to be clinched). You’re saying that there’s something special about 4 wins in this particular week. Makes no sense.

      • MannyGeee says:

Says Greg… Ummmmmwait, is this a trick question?

    • Pasta Stumbling Luis Sojo (formerly StanfordBen) says:

I don’t know why you keep repeating this. It doesn’t make sense.

These games count the same as any other game. Why should the number of wins in a particular 7 day span make any more of a difference than other games? And even if it’s somehow true that 4 is a magic number where if they win fewer than that they won’t be happy (despite being a .600 team!), why does the team’s happiness at the All Star Break matter? Will they try harder or less hard in the subsequent games?

      • Greg says:

In order to feel good about themselves in the standings going into the all star break, it would be wise to not giveup ANY ground to their divisional rivals. 4 wins would allow the Yankees some breathing room in the division

        • Pasta Stumbling Luis Sojo (formerly StanfordBen) says:

You left a couple of those unanswered.

You’re saying that if they give up let’s say 1 game to division rivals, they won’t feel good despite being a .600 team with a 5 game lead in the division? And even if that’s true, does the team’s happiness matter in terms of future performance?

I’m pretty sure most Major Leaguers understand that it’s a 162 game season and that what happens over the span of a few games doesn’t matter any more than the other games, and taking the long view makes more sense.

  95. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

    What the fucking fuck

    absolutely ridiculous

  96. Karl Krawfid says:

    Turning this shit off.

    Have a good night folks.

    • jjyank says:

The game is tied. I hope you just have something better to do, and aren’t just giving up on when it’s tied and in the 4th inning.

      • Greg says:

I’m close to doing the same. The Yankees obviously want to keep the divisional race close. Keep the Red Sox and the Rays hoping.

  97. DERP says:

    Easy fucking play

  98. MannyGeee says:

Wow… Sorry guys. I think it’s my fault, I show up and this team turns into mush.

  99. I hereby advocate changing the name of Murphy’s Law to The Yankees Playing in Tropicana’s Law.

  100. DERP says:

It’s a good thing that we haven’t had to use the bullpen a lot recently, AMIRITE?

  101. BrianDoyle says:

Can anyone here play this game? Nova’s gotta pick up Martin afetr that tough play at the plate and Chavez has to field that ball… every game they play in Tampa becomes a nightmare.

  102. Cuso says:

Apparently Tropicana’s Field is the reason for bad defense. Maybe they should change to 100 watt lightbulbs.
Watching a game there is like looking through cataracts.

  103. Countryclub says:

It’s mind numbing how much trouble the yanks have with the Rays.

  104. Dewayne is Wise says:

Just pull the string on the hamels deal already.
    Nova or hughes can go.

  105. Brian S. says:

    The fuck is going on?

  106. Oh thank god it’s over and the score’s only tied.

  107. Widget says:

wow does Tim Linecum suck this year.

  108. Athenian says:

The defensive hex has plagued the Yankees lately. That is not good.

  109. Will The Thrill says:

Yankees will get singled to death. #ShitThatHappensInRaysSeries

  110. Countryclub says:

Martin has to hold on to that ball. But the truth is the guy was safe anyway. Ump would have made a bad call if he called him out.

  111. Dewayne is Wise says:

Let guys like keppinger beat you get mitchell up

  112. DERP says:

Let’s just score 10 runs here.

  113. Mike says:

The scorer gave Martin an error, and there were 2 out, so how are 2 of the 3 runs allowed earned? I thought all runs would be unearned since that would have been the 3rd out of the inning.

  114. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Russell, don’t ever high five Wise again. You’re not fucking worthy.

  115. MannyGeee says:

Yiiiiikes… That was an awfully low strike.

  116. Hummingbird S. says:

that looked off the plate.. glad the ump is giving Shields all the calls

  117. Will The Thrill says:

Thank God we came in here with a cushioned lead in the standings or else we might’ve left here in 2nd place.

  118. It’s the third inning and already we’ve seen:
Cano forget how many outs there where
    A Catwalk aided homer
    2 Errors within two batters

    I fucking hate this stadium.

  119. DERP says:

This umpire should die in a fire.

  120. MannyGeee says:

I hate the facial hair on this Rays team…

  121. Raul :) showing some life. I approve.

  122. DERP says:

    Just missed

  123. MannyGeee says:

Ibanez juuuuuuuuuuuuuuust missed that. Like, by a c-hair

  124. Will The Thrill says:

Is it weird that I’d rather the Yankees play in Comerica Park than this shithole?

  125. I really don’t understand this strike zone at all…according to game day, strike 3 to Robbie was well low, and ball 1 to Chavez was right over the inside corner.

  126. Cy Pettitte says:

    Eric Chavez: pretty fucking awesome.

  127. Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

    2 out RISPWIN!!

  128. Zombiechez, making up for the error :) can we not give this lead back?

  129. Greg says:

    My god that’s big.

  130. Hummingbird S. says:

    Chavez! Nice piece of hitting!

  131. Cuso says:

Old men showing heart. I love it.

  132. DERP says:

    Was that a #NPOH?

  133. MannyGeee says:

Hooray for tha guys who don’t make a shit ton of money!!!!!

  134. Cuso says:

    (I just died a little)

  135. eephus_pitch says:

    Come on, S. Martin.

    • eephus_pitch says:

“Sooner or later you know Martin’s going to bust out of it”
      -John Sterling

I’d like to know what he’s basing that on.

  136. jjyank says:

Haha is it me, or did Ibanez look like he was about to crap himself he was running so hard?

  137. Hummingbird S. says:

    3-1 pop up! Great player..

  138. Greg says:

Why did we sign Russell Martin?

  139. Cy Pettitte says:

Roy Oswalt is getting wrecked by the White Sox. wow.

  140. Brian S. says:

You guys need to check brooksbaseballnet. James Shields is getting away with murder low and away. And Nova has had four strikes called balls.

  141. Dewayne is Wise says:

There is no catcher in AAA we can trade for that can catch.

  142. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

So now all of Nova’s run are unearned?

  143. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

    wtf Nova

  144. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Molina: .198 / .268

  145. MannyGeee says:

    Just yuck.

  146. Captain Gift Basket says:

3 runs to this shitty Rays lineup in one inning without the courtesy of a HR – UNACCEPTABLE. Can the Yankees please figure out how to get the .240-hitting BJ Upton out already.

  147. Brian S. says:

“Tyler Austin hit by pitch. Jose Toussen to 3rd. Ramon Flores to 2nd.
Tampa Yankees Tyler Austin left the game due to an injured head.”

  148. Cy Pettitte says:

that’s why you IBB Sean Rodriguez

  149. are you fucking kidding? Your fucking joking right Nova?

  150. Mike Axisa says:

Gem of a pitch right there.

  151. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

    Are you fucking serious Nova?

  152. CBean says:

    I really hate the Trop

  153. eephus_pitch says:

I guess that’s why they always walk him.

  154. JobaWockeeZ says:

  155. Kevin G. says:

Sigh, playing the Rays at Tropicana has become the new playing the Angels at LA

  156. Greg says:

    Good night everybody.

The Red Sox fans getting hope

    • FIPster Doofus says:

    • Brian S. says:

The Red Sox are 2-3 against Seattle and Oakland on their road trip.

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Goodnight, Greg. Look forward to speaking with you in the near future.

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

Why? They keep getting beat by Oakland and Seattle.

    • Widget says:

how? have you seen them lately? what the hell is your fear of the red sox? what have they done at all this year to make you so afraid? did they kick sand in your face at the beach?

they have a losing record in the AL East and a losing record against teams above .500. Have you seen their second half? That is all they play. If not for them beating up the AL Central they’d be 12 games out of first.

  157. Hummingbird S. says:

awesome.. might as well forfeit all games against the Rays at the Trop..

  158. Brian S. says:

THATS why you walk Sean Rodriguez.

  159. MannyGeee says:

So…. Sean Rodriguez, huh? Of course it is

    Fuckmme in the throat.

  160. Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

Please fucking obliterate Sean Rodriguez and the trop.

  161. Widget says:

wow. just wow. terrible umpiring and the spectre of facing the powerhouse of Sean Rodriguez is just too much to overcome. nova should be ashamed.

  162. eephus_pitch says:

Goddammit. Take it to BGJ in the next inning.

  163. Athenian says:

    This is pretty comical.

  164. jjyank says:

God damn it. Alright, I really didn’t want to go on this note. And I promise I’m not being a hypocrite by leaving now, I really am just meeting a couple of people at a bar downtown (day off tomorrow and all).

I hope I come back to tomorrow’s game thread and be able to add me drinking at bars to the list of superstitious stipulations to a Yankee victory.

Hope the game thread stays sane enough for the rest of you!

  165. Will The Thrill says:

You wouldn’t think this was a team that went on a 10 game winning streak by watching how shitty they’ve been playing this series.

  166. Tom says:

The mistake was to Jose Molina… the guy looks foolish in the previous AB… how in the world do you throw him a fastball with 2 strikes? Or anything close to the zone?

  167. Kramerica Industries says:

    Gotta say…

Letting Jose Molina and Sean Rodriguez be the guys giving the Rays the lead right back, without recording an out, just about describes this entire matchup in that building, in a nutshell.

Shields having an awful night, and the Yankees haven’t taken advantage of it.

    Fucking sickening.

    • OMG! Bagels! says:

      Gotta say:

Shield is getting calls that Nova isn’t getting.

If I ever described a game as “sickening,” I would stop watching baseball.

  168. Cuso says:

I miss the never-give-away-at-bat Yankee lineups of the 90s that continually tack on.

I KNOW, I KNOW, they still average however many runs/game.

But we’re being a bit naive if we don’t acknowledge that when the Yankees retake a lead, there seems to be a mental letdown like “ok we did it, now let’s go play defense.” Ibanez and Chavez fought their asa off for a run. And then it stopped.

  169. Cy Pettitte says:

lol Heath Bell. what a nightmare signing.

  170. eephus_pitch says:

    NO GIDP!

  171. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Wise the spark plug

  172. Monterowasnotdinero says:

After a 4 day power outage I can finally watch the Yanks at my home again. This game will go to the wire.

DJ bunt? avoids the gidp? why not hit and run instead?

  173. Kevin G. says:

Kind of thought Jeter was going to beat that out

  174. Dewayne is Wise says:

Why bunt? Wtf wise can steal

  175. Crime Dog says:

Possibility that Wise’s .950 OPS in AAA is somewhat meaningful vs his .650 MLB career OPS is like 1 in a million right?

  176. Why Derek? Why do you insist on doing that? You ripped a double off of him earlier, he’s not been pitching great tonight or all season…a speedy guy on base. That makes zero sense.

  177. MannyGeee says:

Nice little bunt, just out by a step.

  178. Dewayne is Wise says:

Steal home here wise arod is old

  179. Captain Gift Basket says:

What the hell is up with the Yankees scouting department? Does it even exist or do they just try to compete with talent alone? They see these guys 18 times a year and it’s the same guys all the time hurting them: Pena, Upton and Rodriguez. The rest of the league has figured these hacks out – can the Yanks get on board, please?!

    • Will The Thrill says:

You’re entrusting the same scouts that selected Culver as a first rounder to give us good info on players? Good luck with that.

  180. eephus_pitch says:

Way to clobber the 2-0 pitch.
    Yes, I’m being petty.

  181. Will The Thrill says:

So that bunt worked prettay, prettay well…

  182. I hate to sound trollish/gloom and doomy but I knew in my heart that the second Derek laid down that bunt that Wise wasn’t scoring this inning.

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

We all did, Raul…we all did///

    • eephus_pitch says:

It’s almost like the probability of scoring goes down when they start giving away outs.
Maybe someone should tell DJ that, instead of doing this “that’s the right way to play the game” bullshit.

  183. Hummingbird S. says:

they are getting good counts to hit but when they get there they just take a weak hack… also, great idea having A-Rod’s corpse hit 3rd.

  184. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Stuart A just nutted

  185. TommyBoy says:

Man Arod blows! 2-0 and he swings at that crap, weak ass ground ball out!

  186. MannyGeee says:

Wow. That was a boner killer.

  187. Cuso says:

    A-Rod. Guess hitter.

“On a 2-0 count with Cano on deck there’s no way I’m not getting a fastball.”

He started his swing before he even saw the pitch, there.

  188. Brian S. says:

Seriously though. Why do people bunt over runners that can steal bases?

  189. Athenian says:

This is some really bad baseball being played by the Yankees. Untimely errors, bad pitching, and some bad AB’s. Think that means the geriatrics need an infusion of V8 or a shot of Red Bull. Senior softball league doesn’t start until fall.

  190. Tom says:

    Dumb play by Jeter.

I know he’s bunting got a hit, but you have a guy who’s already given up 7 hits and 4 runs in 4 innings, has a moderately high pitch count, and someone you smoked a double off of.

That’s two outs they have handed Shields tonight who should now have no problem going 7 or 8 innings (pitch count wise)

  191. MannyGeee says:

Wow..Alex almost gave tha ball a Nunezian ride…

  192. stuart a says:

hey let’s bat arod the great 3rd or 4th he is so good…….

clueless they need to move the sack of sh-t down in the order…

he is killing the team…that is not a exageration. they can take Swisher thinking every pitch is a fastball, they can deal with Cano being a dope, but arod sucking and batting 3rd and 4th with 35 rbi’s is unbearable…..

    • eephus_pitch says:

Yeah, it must suck having Robinson Cano in your lineup. They must just barely tolerate him.

      • stuart a says:

cano is the best baserunner in baseball. his baseball IQ is outstanding…..

he gave away a out in the first because he is so stupid he did not know how many outs there was….

giving away outs will come back to haunt you dope. also Cano with RISP has been dreadful this year…

  193. stuart a says:

Jeter has been doing the stupid bunt routine for years. he thinks this team can hit with RISP. Does he know how to read a stat sheet?????

  194. Kramerica Industries says:

Please tell me where that pitch was.

  195. Brian S. says:

    That wasn’t a strike?

  196. MannyGeee says:

Wow…… Isn’t that almost the same pitch they called Cano out on a few innings ago?

  197. Cuso says:

They’re still going to retake the lead at some pointblank the only question is if it’s a 1-run lead to be quickly coughed up or a more intimidating lead

  198. Waldman just said that Sanchez is in AAA, is that true? can somebody confirm that?

  199. Will The Thrill says:

Red Sox reached a contract termination settlement with Bobby Jenks today and released him. Maybe we should do the same with A-Rod.

  200. MannyGeee says:

Maybe if you didn’t look like a total douche with those chops, you wouldn’t be 0-32….

  201. stuart a says:

If Arod retired his groupies would be devastated…

we get to see 5 more years of this shell of a ballplayer…

he should hit 7th or lower in the order……

  202. Brian S. says:

Tyler Austin got hit in the dome.

  203. Tom says:

White Sox continuing to pound Oswalt (2IP, 7ER, 9 hits). He gave up 22 hits in his first 2 starts and looked awful (despite getting wins in both).

Pretty glad the Yankees did not bother with him.

  204. stuart a says:

If I left my moms basement my eyes would hurt because of the sun…Be right back going to go grab another hot pocket.

  205. Tom says:

So Swish should bunt for a hit here right…. at worst he at least moves the guy to 2nd?

  206. Captain Gift Basket says:

Can anyone recall the last Nick Swisher sighting?

  207. Brian S. says:

    Swisher is not that good.

  208. cjc says:

    Cano is not fast

  209. MannyGeee says:

Go go go…. Balls… Go back!

  210. Cy Pettitte says:

that was the worst send I’ve ever seen. fireable offense.

  211. Kramerica Industries says:

What a dumbassed send with only one out.

  212. Brian S. says:

How the fuck is Cano so slow?

  213. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

    WTF is Thompson doing there?

    fucking awful send

  214. GODDAMNIT I HATE ROBBY THOMPSON! Seriously though…he never seems to get the close play right.

  215. Hummingbird S. says:

what a fucking awful send… they dont want to win this game

  216. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Thompson kill yourself.

  217. cjc says:

    bad job Thompson

  218. Tom says:

What in the hell are thompson and Cano thinking!?

There’s ONE damn out, not 2!

  219. Will The Thrill says:

Robbie Thompson screwing us again. Sending the runners when you shouldn’t and holding them when there’s a chance.

  220. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Safe Joe wested

  221. Cuso says:

How the hell do you send Cano there?!?!!!

  222. Kramerica Industries says:

    It’s amazing.

Yankees give them outs, and take away their own.

Then you wonder why they can’t fucking win in that ballpark.

    • Cy Pettitte says:

seriously. I’ve never seen a team try so hard to lose. these last two games have been a joke.

  223. eephus_pitch says:

Free outs! Got your free outs right here!

  224. MannyGeee says:

God damn it. Shoulda kept Molina. Not even 1/2 joking.

    • Will The Thrill says:

Better than the noodle bat brothers Martin and Stewart.

      • MannyGeee says:

All I am saying is that we all knew Jose couldn’t hit. But he wasn’t hiding behind ‘great game manager’ or ‘pitchers love him’

He was a balls out defensive catcher. None better for the money.

  225. cjc says:

this is as painful as Anaheim

  226. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

WTF could Thompson have possibly been thinking there. That is easily one of the worst sends I’ve ever seen.

    Un-fucking Real

  227. Hummingbird S. says:

another wasted opportunity… they cant get anything right tonight

  228. Captain Gift Basket says:

    Maybe Swisher should have bunted…LOL

  229. Tom Q says:

That’s what was missing — a send that had him by ten feet.

It’s of course always possible for the Yanks to rally, but this game has a whiff of failure all over it.

  230. Slu says:

Terrible call to send him, but he looked safe to me.

  231. Cuso says:

Ibanez jjuust worked ANOTHER great at-bat and you send Cano of all people there? Yankees are just giving this game away. Stupid stupid baseball.

  232. stuart a says:

    cano is a baserunner extraordinare….

to bad Ibanez could have passed Arod the great on the rbi list.

so the yanks have given away 2 outs but no big deal…

cano runs like a 3B not a 2B. He was safe by the way.. he hit home plate before he was tagged.

    • eephus_pitch says:

You can’t be mad at his baserunning and then argue that he was safe. That’s called cognitive dissonance.

  233. Tom says:

So they’ve now given Shields one free inning (the Cano brain fart in the first, the Jeter bunt, the ridiculous send)

Hard to beat a decent team when you basically get one less inning worth of AB’s.

  234. stuart a says:

  235. Will The Thrill says:

They say you should bring your A game when you play your division rivals. It looks like the Yankees bring their F game.

  236. Alright, leaving work for the bus stop, let the comeback commence.

  237. DM says:

I love how everyone thinks the Yankees 3rd base coach is the ex-big league 2nd baseman from the Giants.

  238. Captain Gift Basket says:

Everyone hold their breath – the great Sean Rodriguez is at the dish.

  239. LarryM.,Fl. says:

The Yankees are making mental and physical errors on command tonight. Cano out at the plate. Why send him?

  240. Tom says:

Hey look…. maybe the Yankees should throw Molina anything remotely close to the plate with 2 strikes? At least Martin figured that out. Too bad it cost the Yankees a run to learn this lesson (the single in front of the Rodriguez HR)

  241. stuart a says:

    Pastadiving arod

  242. Hummingbird S. says:

another one by A-Rod that a decent 3rd basemen gets.. he’s definately not helping us win

  243. MannyGeee says:

    A Rod missed it… AGAIN!!!!!

    - stuart a

  244. Cy Pettitte says:

wow did Nova get lucky there

  245. Hummingbird S. says:

let’s see how they fail to score in this inning..

  246. Slu says:

Nice to get some luck. Rally time…

  247. Cuso says:

Someone bust out the ass-kicking sticks. Stop letting this team think they’re as good as us.

  248. your mom says:

God I fucking hate losing to this POS team, in that shit stadium, with their lame fans.

  249. Captain Gift Basket says:

And the legend of Sean Rodriguez continues – great scouting department Yanks.

  250. cjc says:

doesn’t get more annoying than not being able to get out a guy who isn’t good enough to play on most bad teams.

  251. MannyGeee says:

Charlie Sheen talking to Micheal Kay? Not sure if interested…

    • MannyGeee says:

I take that back, but only if they spend the entire block talking bout him playing Rick “Wild Thing” Vaughn. And doing coke with prostitutes.

      And Nothing else

      • eephus_pitch says:

I never thought there’d be an episode more disgraceful than the Mike Tyson one, but they might have done it with Charlie Sheen.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

You’re bound to be disappointed. He’s slightly in “image rehab” mode.

  252. Will The Thrill says:

I think the baseball gods are screwing us this series just so we can know how shitty Mets fans felt this year in the Subway Series.

  253. Hummingbird S. says:

    useless piece of shit

  254. eephus_pitch says:

Great job of getting his pitch count up.

  255. your mom says:

Russell is having a crappy game.

  256. stuart a says:

Jeters old but he tries hard.

    Arod just a rotting corpse.

  257. MannyGeee says:

    Hooray notabunt!

  258. Cy Pettitte says:

remind me again why he bunted earlier?

  259. Hummingbird S. says:

we can really use a HR from grandy here..

  260. Robinson Tilapia says:

Lovely thread this has turned into. I should have just had seconds on dessert.

From what I’ve heard and seen of this, this is what it must be like to face the New York Yankees. They’ve made Nova throw enough pitches for him to make mistakes and have capitalized well on them.

I also heard that, if the Yankees don’t win four games this series, Greg will be a sad.

    • MannyGeee says:

      Ha… All of this.

      • Robinson Tilapia says:

Most of the damage came on that three-run inning. The team didn’t help Nova much but, again, they made him throw enough pitches that he was going to throw a bad one.

Hard to watch? That’s what it’s like facing the Yankees.

  261. Will The Thrill says:

I bet Martin is kicking himself from rejecting that contact offer from the Yankees this offseason. The dude will be lucky if he finds a minor league deal next year. He’s a near auto out and although he plays good D his pitch selection in certain situations is questionable.

  262. MannyGeee says:

Grandy in a hitters count? Good things will come

  263. Countryclub says:

I never thought I’d say this, but I miss the days of having designated relievers for the 7th & 8th. This matchup nonsense is driving me nuts. The more relievers you bring in th game, the bigger risk one of the doesn’t have it that night.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

I’ve never quite thought of it that way. I disagree with you, but it certainly is a different angle on it.

  264. Hummingbird S. says:

another hitter’s count, another weak out… they really dont want to win this game

  265. eephus_pitch says:

They’re getting good hitters counts and doing nothing with them.

  266. wow says:

This team wants absolutely nothing to do with winning a game in that place. I thought last series was annoying but holy crap, man.

  267. Kramerica Industries says:

Three outs left to stave off arrow-shooting time.

Unless they decide to pound the ever living shit out of that asshole tonight. Would be his third straight appearance.

  268. your mom says:

Wow, Nova has a sub 4.00 ERA, good job.

  269. Captain Gift Basket says:

On an 0-2 count – UNACCEPTABLE!!

  270. Tom says:

0-2 fastball? I know Nova missed the spot, but you’d think knowing that is his weakness (fastballs leaking back over the plate), can Martin play to his strengths?

I know the pitcher can shake him off, but Martin’s game calling has been shit of late as well (the 2nd Molina AB still bothers the hell out of me)

  271. Will The Thrill says:

I know it’s said a lot. But boy should the Yankees be embarrassed. A team with a $209MM payroll not being able to beat a team comprised mostly of scrubs. Yankees FO better be joking about that luxury tax nonsense because they’re going to need more bandages to fix the numerous things that are wrong with this team.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

You never underestimate Tampa. They have gotten it done for several years now despite the names on the back of the uniform.

      • MannyGeee says:

They are an annoyance. Always nipping at the heels, never really overpowering. Just fucking annoying.

        • Robinson Tilapia says:

I call that “good.” People worry about Boston so damn much. I worry more about Tampa being right there at the end.

What’s hard about that is that I honestly don’t dislike them all that much.

          • Kramerica Industries says:

That’s not a problem for me.

I find no redeeming qualities about the Rays.

I mean, Joe Maddon’s a genius for squeezing every last shred of talent out of his roster? He’s also an enormous jack-ass with an ego bigger than Shaq. How else do you explain many of his unnecessary shifts? Smartest person in the room-itis. Sure as hell rubs off the wrong way on me.

  272. MannyGeee says:

Rapada is awesome at thorwing the ball. Well, to home he is, at least

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

Watching him strike someone out really is a joy. He’s good at a very small subset of things but, when that’s good, that is damn good.

  273. Robinson Tilapia says:

I wonder if the trolls now have their responses all written out and just wait to hit “send” if Qualls gives up the run here.

  274. your mom says:

I hope the Rays continue their struggles against AL Central teams (4-12) when they play Cleveland this weekend.

  275. Mauro says:

I rather have cervelli than Martín at This point

  276. your mom says:

BJ Upton has got to be one of the most overrated players in baseball.

  277. Widget says:

just get swept yankees so you can head into Boston with a losing streak. Everyone will assume the worst and instead you’ll sweep Boston and Greg will be forced to cry. Again.

  278. your mom says:

Okay Chad do your thing, we need a double play ball.

  279. eephus_pitch says:

I just looked up John Wasdin, and that guy gave up 1.5 homers PER NINE INNINGS. I knew he was bad, but dammit how do you get a job as a reliever with that kind of gopher ball tendency?

  280. Kramerica Industries says:

  281. Cy Pettitte says:

    this team is pathetic.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

This team’s in first place. They’re going to lose games you really thought they should win, and look bad in the process. That’s part of a 162 game season.

    • TommyBoy says:

Yes dumbass, that’s why they have the second best record in baseball!

  282. Robinson Tilapia says:

Betty Lizard just closed her legs.

    • Betty Lizard says:

It’s difficult when your designated Baseball Boyfriend (2012 Season Model) is stinkin’ the place up. But I don’t dump baseball boyfriends mid-season.
      (But I do play the field . . . .)

  283. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

    Fuck Russell Martin

but Cano really needs to learn how to keep the ball in the IF

  284. MannyGeee says:

Ok, I am officially on board

    Fuck Russell Martin.

  285. eephus_pitch says:

    I love defensive wizards.

  286. jon says:

    russell martin: defensive catcher

  287. DERP says:

Call up Breen. This is ridiculous.

  288. Brian S. says:

Someone give Austin Romine some HGH for his back and some steroids for his bat.

    • Will The Thrill says:

I agree. Romine can’t be much worse than Martin with the bat and is probably on par with him defensively.

  289. Will The Thrill says:

Russell Martin. A blackhole in the bottom of the lineup and butterfingers with the glove.

  290. Captain Gift Basket says:

Bossman Jr, proud owner of a .299 OBP and .670 OPS has done it again.

  291. DERP says:

Jesus Montero would be the best defensive catcher on this team.

  292. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Russell Martin: Jeff Mathis of the east coast.

  293. Widget says:

3 errors. argh. Stupid shitty florida team and their hideous baseball field.

    • Athenian says:

Yeah, might want to blame the visiting for this clusterfuck and last nights. Not the field or the FL team.

  294. Athenian says:

More bad baseball. So much for breaking the streak. WTF!

  295. DERP says:

It was probably a bad idea for Martin to not pursue that extension.

  296. Mike Axisa says:

    The Great Chad Qualls.

  297. TommyBoy says:

Martin is fricking useless! Can’t hit, can’t field!

  298. CBean says:

why did we get this guy again?

  299. Brian S. says:

Don’t worry you guys. David Phelps vs. Davis Price tomorrow. No problem.

  300. christopher says:

::sung to Green Acres theme song::

Tropicana is the place to be
Unless you are a New York Yankee
We can’t wait to get back on our plane
This batshit stadium is driving us insane

    • Betty Lizard says:

Nice! I see your Green Acres and raise you a Bossa Nova:

Blame it on the Tropicana with its magic spell
Blame it on the Tropicana that Tampa plays so well
Oh, it all began with just one little hit
But then it ended up a pile of shit
      Blame it on the Tropicana
      The park from hell

      • Robinson Tilapia says:

Half the people don’t remember the 1990′s and you’re expecting them to hum the Green Acres theme?

  301. Kramerica Industries says:

Well, good luck winning this game now.

Lead will be down to 4.5 on TB after tomorrow. Exactly what I feared and wished would not happen – the Yankees month long building of that margin being erased in big part in three days.

And this is a Rays team that was 9-17 at home since May, and 1-6 last week. Somehow, the Royals and Tigers had no problem dissecting that team. The Yankees? GOD FORBID.

    • Widget says:

Tampa is not a threat at all. More games left against them at the Stadium. That is a huge advantage for the Yankees.

      • Kramerica Industries says:

Three apiece in the Bronx and Trop.

        4-8 overall against them.

Whether they’re a threat or not isn’t the point. They erased a nine game deficit in September alone last season. They are annoyingly good enough to stick around in a playoff race even if they clearly aren’t as good as their fellow competitors. I mean, the Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers, and Angels are all clearly better, and I’d argue that the White Sox and Tigers may very well be as well.

That said, even one win in this series keeps them 6.5 back with six head to heads.

4.5 and 6.5 are drastically different. Even one win would(‘ve) been satisfactory in this series. Are you confident that David Phelps can deliver that win, against David Price, with the Bad News Bears behind him? Because that’s what the Yankees are in that fucking warehouse of a stadium.

        • Widget says:

They didn’t erase shit last year. The Red Sox collapse was why they made the playoffs. That and Girardi punting the last three games of the season.

          • Kramerica Industries says:

Coming back from a nine game deficit is always partially both. More-so a Red Sox collapse in that case*, but the Rays going 6-1 against the Sox in September certainly played a part in that. And the Rays deserve credit for doing that.

*In contrast, the NL side was more-so a Cardinals comeback than a Braves collapse. Braves certainly shat themselves a great deal, but it took the Cardinals playing an unreal level of baseball to catch them. That, and the Phillies losing three of four to the Cards while sweeping the Braves.

    • Brian S. says:

You didn’t think they were going to keep playing like crap forever did you?

      • Kramerica Industries says:

No Joyce and no Longoria. That lineup is absolutely hideous.

So, really, until either of those two come back, there’s no reason to think things should turn around. They’re 23-30 in their past 53 games – a full 1/3 of the season, all without Longoria. We all tend to overrate them because they’re a division rival that has been an absolute pain in the ass for the past five seasons.

I used to be that way. I thought very highly of them going into 2009, and 2010 as well. Haven’t thought the same way the past two seasons, though. Frankly, because they aren’t as good a team now as they were then.

  302. Widget says:

Qualls was dumped for a reason. No excuse for garbage like him to be on the Yankees.

  303. Pasta Stumbling Luis Sojo (formerly StanfordBen) says:

Actually, I have to say, it wasn’t just a problem that Martin’s throw was an error, he shouldn’t have thrown it at all. Jennings broke for home as soon as he threw, and I think he would’ve made it even without the error. I think Jennings was credited with a steal of home.

  304. DERP says:

We’re winning this game. Anyone else think so?

  305. wow says:

Beat this time… Wy word, it’s like they literally don’t want to.

  306. Will The Thrill says:

Fucking terrible. I know how these games are going to play out so why do I force myself to watch? Yankees playing like they’ve got nothing to lose.

  307. The Scheister of Doom AKA The Troll Monger says:

Joe Giardi you should’ve just left Eppley in. Amazing, this game went from an actual ball game to a joke. Prove me wrong, please.

  308. stuart a says:

Wow does arod even try anymore?

  309. Widget says:

A-Rod really needs to train with Big Papi.

  310. The Scheister of Doom AKA The Troll Monger says:

At the end of the day, I blame A-Rod.

  311. Cuso says:

He’s just not a middle-of-the-order hitter. I know he compares favorably to “other 3B.”

That’s not the question. How does he compare to “other 3-4″ hitters? Get him out of that spot. PLEASE.

    • Hummingbird S. says:

nothing will change, not with Girardi

      • Cuso says:

I’m hoping he just uses the All-Star break as a time to assessed and make the change.

He is what he is. You don’t need him to prove it to you for an entire season to make that move. It’s July, he’s “healthy” and he has 35 RBI. 2 hole or 6 hole, please.

  312. Hummingbird S. says:

the way it is right now, the Yankees have a poorly constructed pen and that results in relying on garbage pitchers like Rapada, Eppley or Qualls to pitch high leverage innings. It’s going to hard to win games with a pen like this one

    • your mom says:

The offense needs to put together some blowouts once in a while. That would definitely help cut down the innings for our high leverage relievers.

  313. Ppiddy says:

Meet the new Chad Qualls, same as the old Chad Qualls

  314. Brian S. says:

Russel Martin has singlehandedly cost us this game.

  315. Tom says:

Chad Qualls should not be facing lefties (which includes switch hitters)… of course when you construct a bullpen where 3 of 7 arms are either LOOGY or ROOGY, that is what you get.

2 specialists in the pen is pushing it (unless you are fortunate like the Yankees were in June where they got a long run of primarily 7+ inning outings), 3 is just not a sustainable solution.

  316. stuart a says:

cute with using my name on posts…. another masterpiece tonight by the lead legging Yanks…

arod is so bad it is tired of dealing with him and his groupies. every team should have there 3rd or 4th guy in the order getting 78 RBI’s on the season with almost no power and very limited speed.

3 of the last 4 l’s good have been wins with decent defense, baserunning, and rapada and robertson doing there job.. they all count clowns…..

    • Mike Axisa says:

If you’re tired of “dealing with him” than just shut the fuck up about him already. It’s as simple as that. You spew the same RBI bullshit comment after comment but are nowhere to be found when they win.

      • Bobby Banana says:

        Mike getting intense. Go Mike!

      • Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

        Ban him.

      • stuart a says:

stop treating him(AFRAUD) like he is just slightly underachieving.

his performance is pathetic.. use all the WAR and other bullsh-t you want. arod is horrible and anyone with 2 eyes and 1 brain can tell he sucks and is hurting the team a ton. but no.. Yes and other Yankee lackeys act like his down performance is not alarming, a blip on the screen, and no big deal…..

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

and yet they’re still in first place, clown

  317. Will The Thrill says:

I wish A-Rod had a soul and would just realize that it would be best for the Yankee organization, team, and fans if he just retired. But he doesn’t have a soul.

  318. eephus_pitch says:

And the legend of Big Game James is only going to grow after this so-so performance.

  319. stuart a says:

L… no chance they come back… team has come back late maybe twice all season…go down like lambs…..

  320. The Scheister of Doom AKA The Troll Monger says:

    It’s shuffle time…

Or pull names outta a fucken hat just leave Martin 9th and Jeter 1st. This 4.78 runs per game ain’t gonna cut it.
So they’re down by three and all three guys go for HRs, at least Cano drove the ball with authority.

I know they’re a good team based on W-L record and such but this is another winnable game that just was given away. Chad Qualls, really?

    • Captain Gift Basket says:

      Drop Swish to 8.

      • Mike Axisa says:

Right, drop Swisher and leave Teixeira fifth and Jeter at leadoff. I can tell you put a lot of thought into this.

        • The Scheister of Doom AKA The Troll Monger says:

I’d prefer Cust or Branyan at this point at 1B but that ain’t happening anytime soon. A week on the 7 day DL for a mystery concussion would work for me at this point as it would be great to see Russell the real Muscle in the Bronx. But no, not a lot of thought, I just don’t want Alex hitting 3rd or 4th.

        • Captain Gift Basket says:

I’m just not a Swish lover like most of you. I know most of you think RBIs are overrated, but this guy will never knock in a 100 runs, and with this lineup, he should. He certainly comes up with enough opportunities.

I lived in Oakland during his Athletic days where he batted 3rd or cleanup and never understood why he would take 3-0, 3-1 pitches right down the pipe, RISP, when they were a team that always struggled to score runs in that God-awful park.

Plus, his post-season record speaks for itself. He’s not someone I’d want at the plate with the game on the line.

      • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

Swish has probably been their best non-Cano hitter for about a month

    • The Scheister of Doom AKA The Troll Monger says:

Sorry for bitching, I’m just a spoiled Yankee fan who doesn’t mind losing but losing winnable games is double frustrating. I’ll stop now and put my rally cap on.

      • Kramerica Industries says:

I don’t mind losing winnable games terribly much.

Losing winnable games against the Rays is probably my biggest sports gear grinder. Because this isn’t like the Red Sox where the talent levels tend to be level – the gulf is obvious here and it makes no difference. Time, and time again.

      • Robinson Tilapia says:

We were actually discussing this same lineup on another thread. No big deal.

    • Dewayne is Wise says:

      The worse catchers in MLB

    • I brought up this same line up as something I’d try about a month ago.

  321. Captain Gift Basket says:

And Swish continues his slump – 3 for his last 24.

  322. eephus_pitch says:

“The Rally Monkey is clever, it takes thought.”

    -Suzyn Waldman

  323. your mom says:

    When does Longo return anyways?

  324. Kramerica Industries says:

    Sean Rodriguez.

    The re-incarnated Willie Mays, obviously.

    • Captain Gift Basket says:

Damn, I missed the great Sean Rodriguez get on again? When he steps to the plate, ESPN should just stop whatever their broadcasting and cue to his at bat. This guy is a legend in the making.

  325. The Scheister of Doom AKA The Troll Monger says:

Could have swore Suzan Waldman said Sanchez was promoted to AAA, is she smoking DMT or what?

  326. Athenian says:

Wonder if the Yankees could pry Maddon from the Rays? He would easily be 7 WAR over what his name.

    • Mike Axisa says:

That would be more disastrous than Valentine in Boston. His bullshit isn’t made for a big market.

      • Robinson Tilapia says:

This. I assume he’d wind up managing……a lot like Joe Girardi.

      • Kramerica Industries says:

        Pretty much.

And this is why I love when TB radio assholes say that Maddon would win 120-130 games if he had the Yankees or Red Sox resources to back him.

        HAH. Learn the game, novices.

        • Robinson Tilapia says:

He’d have to adjust his style to the team. It’d be very different. He’d seem about as ordinary as anyone else you’d put in there.

      • Athenian says:

Interesting take. Perhaps his success is more a product of where he is at than his talents. Either way Girardi is more frustrating than Torre.

  327. eephus_pitch says:

Not loving the Chad Qualls era, so far.

  328. Coal hammals plezzz says:

Its pitching stupid. Score 4 runs win with good pitching replace nova with hammals and you win tonight.

  329. eephus_pitch says:

Mixing up the batting order isn’t going to change a damn thing about this team if they continue to play this kind of porous defense and their relief pitchers don’t get anyone out. Let it go.

  330. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Close game in Chicago. White Sox 16-0 on the Rangers.

  331. stuart a says:

I like to run around the house inmmy mothers underwear.

  332. Robinson Tilapia says:

Back-to-back losses seeming like the end of the world: First-place team problems.

    • eephus_pitch says:

It hurts more when they give the game away.

    • Captain Gift Basket says:

It’s who they’re losing to – the team expected to compete with them for the division and also a team that sports a AAA lineup that makes the likes of Upton and Rodriguez look like the 2nd coming of Ramirez and Ortiz.

    • your mom says:

The Boston series is more important anyways. . . . .

  333. Athenian says:

White Sox beating the best team ever in baseball 16-0.

  334. The Scheister of Doom AKA The Troll Monger says:

Knock this fools hat straight, please.

  335. Kramerica Industries says:

    Pound this motherfucker.

    Pound him.

  336. Mike Axisa says:

Apparently Pierzynski just hit a three-run homer and blew a kiss at Ron Washington for snubbing him for the ASG.

  337. Hummingbird S. says:

nasty, no chance they hit this guy

  338. The Scheister of Doom AKA The Troll Monger says:

Amazing strike zone! Great job Blue, dudes already unhittable!

  339. The Mets of the late 90s and early 2000s had more success at Turner Field than we’ve had the last two seasons at the Trop.

    • eephus_pitch says:

I still remember Kenny Rogers walking in the running run in the NLCS in ’99. That’s our Kenny.

  340. Tom says:

While the homeplate umpire is certainly not the cause of the loss tonight, he has been absolutely horrendous tonight.

That 2-1 strike call to Ibanez was just absurd.

  341. Crime Dog says:

Can someone explain how the schmuck became an elite reliever?

  342. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

    Fitting end to Russell’s night…yikes.

  343. Kramerica Industries says:

Watch the flight of that fucking arrow, Pena.

Watch it and go fuck yourself.

  344. your mom says:

Fitting end for a shitless loss.

  345. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

It’s okay, guys…they still have to live in Tampa.

  346. Michael Mirabella says:

Tough loss tonight, but if they can pull out a win tomorrow then the Rays only gained a game and are still 6.5 back.

  347. Robinson Tilapia says:

Help us, Obi-Phelps. You’re our only hope.

    Have a great 4th, everyone.

  348. yooboo says:

With Phelps starting tomorrow’s afternoon game, Mithcell warmed up in 8th inning. Really? Good thing Qualls finished the game.
