Game 82: The Second Half

By

No Youkilis, no Pedroia, no Papelbon. Who am I supposed to hate? (Winslow Townson/Getty)

The Yankees officially kick off the second half of their season today, but they’ve only played the Red Sox twice so far. These two teams are going to see a whole lot of each other in the next three months, enough that New York’s current eight-game lead is hardly insurmountable. Honestly, I can’t remember the last time these two teams met at this point of the season so far apart in the standings. If the Yankees really take care of business this weekend, they could go into the All-Star break with a double-digit lead in the loss column over their greatest historic rival. That would be something else. Here’s tonight’s lineup…

SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
DH Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
1B Mark Teixeira
RF Nick Swisher
LF Raul Ibanez
3B Eric Chavez
Russell Martin

RHP Hiroki Kuroda

Tonight’s game starts a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and MLB Network nationally. Enjoy.

DC metro, in all of its wisdom, gave me three orange line trains to New Carrolton before I got my blue to Largo. So I shall be a bit late. Let’s bury these fools, right here, right now.

  2. Brian in NH says:

Or on NESN if you’re in New England: :)

  3. Cano fan #1 says:

    Hate becket

  4. Dino Velvet says:

Pedoria is just tooo gritty for his own body.

  5. Countryclub says:

In response to the caption question: Beckett!!!

  6. Paul VuvuZuvella says:

    Here we go.

  7. Dewayne is Wise says:

The yanks have a chance to burry this boston team and even shorten the managment career of bobby valentine.
I wonder if girardi has the guts to put the petal down and slam this redsox team down hard. That means no mercy.

  8. RI$P FTW says:

Fenway’s food options looked decent: fresh fruit, fried dough.
Then again, I would bet that all stadiums have better options than YS. Can’t possibly be worse.

  9. Ivan says:

    Lets go Yankees!!!!

  10. Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

Really, Kay? Beckett’s no ace anymore.

  11. Why does anybody throw anything in the zone to jeter first pitch lol? I’d be ripping my hair out already if I was Valentine.

  12. Hall and Nokes says:

With this matchup, what are we looking at, four and a half hours minimum tonight?

  13. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Send jeter salty cant throw.

  14. flamingo says:

    This is a good beginning.

  15. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Double steal here.

  16. JobaWockeeZ says:

I wouldn’t rather have anyone up there now than Cano.

  17. Brian S. says:

    Let’s go Cano

  18. NYCSPORTZFAN says:

Cano is about to go all big fly with the bases juiced here in the 1st!

  19. Tom says:

Costa and Smoltz…yikes (and possibly 4 to 5 hours of it?)

Smoltz already rolling out the 1-14 when they don’t hit a HR stat

  20. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Beckett needs a beer

  21. Ivan says:

    Good AB Cano…

  22. RI$P FTW says:

Bobby V still looks like a clown without the makeup to me.

  23. Brian S. says:

Attaboy Cano. Keep it going Teix.

  24. RI$P FTW says:

    Seixy Teixy!

  25. Greg says:

    THERE WE GO

  26. swishers fauxhawk says:

    I like this.

  27. Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

Pedroia would have leaped up and caught that ball.

  28. Hall and Nokes says:

For the record, I’m cool with 4.5 hours of this.

  29. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Nice!

  30. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

Shitty pitch to swing at (and try to pull) in that spot, but I’ll certainly take the result.

  31. Ivan says:

    Nice!!!!!

  32. Tom says:

Nice Tex.. up the middle… (the pitch was oustide so if he really trying to yank it, it probably would have been a GIDP)

  33. JobaWockeeZ says:

Make them boo in this inning.

  34. Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

Some guy I’ve never heard of warming up in the bullpen in the first inning = awesome.

  35. RI$P FTW says:

How long before Beckett gives up and starts throwing FB’s at Yankees hitters?
It seems to be his MO when he’s getting destroyed.

  36. jjyank says:

YES!! Kill them all boys, kill them all!

  37. dontchaknow says:

with every pitch.. a boo.. im fucking loving this

  38. Will (the other one) says:

God, this is the best thing ever.

  39. Damnit Swish!!! First of all stat-padding GARBAGE TIME!!!!!!! Secondly, I wanted to have Beckett knocked out w/o recording an out.

  40. Dewayne is Wise says:

Nice hook josh lol fried chicken fingers

  41. Brian S. says:

That sac fly was almost disappointing.

  42. Tom says:

Wow, that ball was smoked too. A bit of bad luck.

  43. flamingo says:

    I’m starting to like Beckett.

  44. Ivan says:

I dont want to hear no damn excuses that oh Beckett Thumb is hurting and he cant spin his curveball the way he want to. Please…if that was the case then go on the DL if it’s prohibiting you from doing what you can do best….

  45. JobaWockeeZ says:

Okay Boston I admit it you can be funny.

  46. This is the greatest thing in the history of Radio. I don’t even mind that it’s Ma and Pa.

  47. Dewayne is Wise says:

Lol the croud goes wild for a strike

  48. Ivan says:

    Crush one Ibanez!!!!

  49. JobaWockeeZ says:

Make them go to the pen.

  50. Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

Pedroia would have used his grittiness to catch that ball.

  51. The best part about this is that it’s happening in the first inning in a 4 game 3 day series.

  52. jjyank says:

LOL at the loud cheer on the 3-0 called strike to Voldemort.

  53. Tom says:

MLB Network with the impressive stat:

Yankees last 4 innings against Boston – 16 runs

  54. Rooting for U.S. Steel says:

    Mark Teixeira IS greased lightning!

  55. Dewayne is Wise says:

Martin with the buzz kill coming up.

  56. flamingo says:

    This is amazing.

  57. Countryclub says:

One more run would be great. Come on, Chavy

  58. Monterowasdinero says:

This game is making my torn ACL and medial meniscus feel better so far.

  59. Tom Zig says:

    BURY THEM

  60. Greg says:

    Good baseball

  61. RI$P FTW says:

Jesus. I thought there 2 outs! hahaha!

  62. Brian S. says:

Playing the game the right way.

  63. Josh’s Pitch Count:
    28 Pitches
    12 Strikes
    16 Balls

He has no idea where the strike zone is right now.

    • jjyank says:

Seems to be his curve. It’s either flat in the zone or way out of the zone. As we have seen with AJ, if he doesn’t have the curve working, you can’t work with just a fastball.

  64. Ivan says:

Everybody so far has had a great AB this inning…

  65. JobaWockeeZ says:

Make this Freddy proof and save Kuroda.

  66. Dewayne is Wise says:

Kuroda must be orgazmic now after this lead.

  67. Dino Velvet says:

Kaat was on MLB saying Boston will always have the edge when Beckett pitches.

    HA!

  68. RI$P FTW says:

    Damn Canadian!

  69. Mister D says:

Dammit, Russell. I really wanted a 1.000 OBP through the first turn of the lineup.

  70. Of course Russel Martin is the only guy who doesn’t make good contact this inning. I almost feel bad for him.

  71. Dewayne is Wise says:

Josh is going to need a six pack between innings

  72. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

5 runs and they clear the pitcher’s spot in the order.

    Nice job.

  73. Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

That was fun. 8 more like it please.

  74. Tom Zig says:

    What’s a Mauro Gomez?

  75. Brian S. says:

    Oh Russ…

  76. flamingo says:

I hope Kuroda shuts them out.

  77. VT Yankee Fan says:

I’m letting all the Sawks fan at work know what the score is.

  78. Bobby Banana says:

Of course Russell Martin is the only one not to do anything productive that inning!

  79. jjyank says:

Well that inning was awesome. Even the (non Martin division) outs were hit relatively hard, especially Swisher’s.

Kuroda hopefully still has his A game. Hopefully they can get Beckett out real early and tire out that entire bullpen so they got nothing for the next 3 games.

  80. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Go get them sensi.
    No mercy

  81. Greg says:

And of course Nava takes it off the monster.

  82. Tom says:

    Damn routine flyball/Fenway double.

  83. Ivan says:

    Typical fenway hit….

  84. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Knock that shit out roki

  85. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Red Sox lead off hitter reaches base.

Cue Greg’s rant about Sox fans and the MSM.

  86. Damn I was hoping for a quick 10 pitch 1-2-3 inning, get Beckett out there while he’s still reeling.

  87. Bobby Banana says:

Why do I have a feeling that five runs in the first isn’t enough to finish this first inning with a lead?

  88. Tom says:

Nice lazy backhand Martin… that’s something that has to be blocked.

  89. Mattchu12 says:

I still think, and I’m not saying it because Nava got a big hit or Crawford got hurt, that the Red Sox would have been smarter to go with a Nava/Kalish platoon in left field than to invest in Crawford. Could have kept Beltre at third base, and either kept Youk at first or still traded for A-Gon and they’d be crazy good.

    • Bobby Banana says:

Let’s be happy that they didn’t keep Beltre, V-Mart, or Youkilis. Hopefully they let Papi go too.

      • Mattchu12 says:

I think Papi is way gone. Pedroia probably is too as soon as he can, he was close with Tito and as a player, it’s been eye-opening how they treat their players.

  90. Dewayne is Wise says:

Jesus martin i really think cervelli couldnt be worse.

  91. Greg says:

    Fail by Kuroda.

Gave the Red Sox a lifeline

  92. Brian S. says:

Don’t give them any more Hiroki.

  93. Monterowasdinero says:

Martin looking like Montero behind the plate. Lazy.

  94. Brian S. says:

The fuck is this Kuroda! Come on!

  95. Tom Zig says:

No lead is safe in Fenway. Keep on scoring.

  96. VT Yankee Fan says:

Sterling can stop fellating Ortiz at any time.

  97. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Wtf kuroda burry these worms

  98. Frank says:

Typical RS game at Fenway. Down early, they will be back in this game by the 5th.

  99. Greg says:

    Here we go

  100. Brian S. says:

    Oh my fucking God defense.

  101. Bobby Banana says:

    Shutdown Innings everyone.

  102. Greg says:

They make this so hard on themselves. Its ridiculous.

  103. Tom says:

Dumb and Dumbererer in the MLB Network…

“4 is the maximum # of sac flies you can have in 1 full inning”
(Smoltz explains to Costas that the 3rd out would not be a sac fly.)

    “Oh you are 100% correct”

…well except you can have an infinite # of sac flies if they are dropped with 0 or 1 out for an error. (and it would still be rule a sac fly)

  104. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Cue bad news bears music
Roll out the kid in the wheelchair.

  105. Tom says:

So routine flyball, somewhat deep flyball, single that beats the shift, hard hit grounder for an error

  106. Cuso says:

I see the captions are back – nice

  107. Frank says:

This is looking like a replay of the top of the inning.

  108. RI$P FTW says:

LOL! Now it’s Beckett’s fault that True Ace Kuroda is shitting the bed. Nice, YES.

  109. Dewayne is Wise says:

Man some one go talk to kuroda

  110. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

    for fuck’s sake

  111. Brian S. says:

    FUCK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

  112. Greg says:

    SO FUCKING HARD

  113. Cuso says:

    This dumb park.

  114. RI$P FTW says:

Now it’s Fenway’s fault that Kuroda is shitting the bed. YES = integrity.

  115. Bobby Banana says:

Way to give the game back. This is going to be a long night.

  116. Cy Pettitte says:

Kuroda picks now of all times to shit the bed. nice.

  117. TommyBoy says:

Fuck you Kuroda! 5 run lead and he’s about to give it all back the next fucking inning!

  118. Tom says:

    Damn another routine out….

  119. Ivan says:

    Figures….

  120. Nathan says:

    Are you kidding me?

  121. Greg says:

    Good night everybody.

    God help them

  122. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

    Fuck, Fuck, Fuck

  123. jjyank says:

I fucking hate this stadium. RBI double by Gonzalez is an out in literally every other ballpark.

  124. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Hirok!

  125. Brian S. says:

Fuck you Kuroda. Fuck you so hard.

  126. Frank says:

Not surprised al all. It’s going to be one of those games.

  127. RI$P FTW says:

    LOL!

  128. TommyBoy says:

FUCK YOU KURODA!Go back to the National League asshole!

  129. Tom says:

Good Grief… two Fenway doubles, a weak single, an error and than a blast.

  130. flamingo says:

This is a freaking joke, right?

  131. Get Phelps Up (formerly Freddy Garcia's 86 mph Heat) says:

The Red Sox matched their entire run total from Oakland in this inning.

  132. Tom Zig says:

    holy hell.

  133. RI$P FTW says:

Who will Singleton blame for that HR? Apparently, anyone but Kuroda.
Maybe his wig glue is infecting his brain?

  134. dontchaknow says:

    holy shit

  135. …were was that defense 15 minutes ago?

  136. RI$P FTW says:

This game will be over at 2am.

  137. Bobby Banana says:

Yankees just love to give away games vs. division rivals don’t they? That’s what you get for nibbling and pitching like a bitch.

  138. Monterowasdinero says:

Yo Yo Ma! Kuroda sucks tonight!

  139. stuart a says:

nice play by chavez on the error…

    kuroda coming up big.

yes announcers especially Kay are friggin morons. acting like Bostons offense sucks. They are 3rd in baseball and scored a ton more runs then the great yanks.

the horrible agon has 10 more rbi’s the our #3 hitter.

    total clueless.

btw this stadium is a bandbox joke….the hits to left anywhere else would have been outs…..

  140. bobtaco says:

These games are always like this. It should’t surprise anyone. Whose lineup and bullpen do you like more?

  141. Wow, Suzyn Waldman just hates Kuroda and A-Rod, this isn’t just tonight…she’s looked for any reason to rip on either of them all year.

  142. cjc says:

this outing must make adam warren feel pretty good

  143. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

Where the fuck was the defense?

  144. Brian S. says:

    Kuroda better start running.

  145. Monterowasdinero says:

Gritty inning without the midget in the lineup. Even without Peedy and Youk the Sox are a pain in the ass.

  146. Kramerica Industries says:

Knew I would be late getting to this game, but saw the score was 5-0 about 10 minutes ago.

    Good.

Turn it on – 5-5 game.

    Fuck.

  147. Brian S. says:

Batsu Ketsu right now. Kuroda has shamed himself.

  148. Andrew says:

That was the worst kind of roller coaster ride.

  149. Dewayne is Wise says:

I am ready to beat kuroda with a kendo stick.

  150. Finally, now can our offense go back to kicking Beckett’s ass.

  151. Cuso says:

The first inning of a 4-game set to be played in 3 days on the night before a double -header lasts 46 minutes.

They’re gonna need every second of the All-Star “break.”

  152. RI$P FTW says:

    Short Round = Fail

  153. TommyBoy says:

C.C. and Andy hurry the hell back if Kuroda is carrying us!

  154. Tom says:

The problem is Kuroda can’t just live on the outside corner vs the lefties as they will just hit routine flyballs off the LF wall.

He’s going to need to pitch inside to lefties in this park.

    • Tom says:

By the way this is I think one of the reasons why he is so much better at home. (he can live on the outside corner at home)

  155. Will (the other one) says:

This is not the best thing ever.

  156. Countryclub says:

All I have to say is : SIGHHHHhHhHh

  157. Bobby Banana says:

Yankees need to be play better against AL East teams. I’m not expecting them to win every game but if they want to hold on to first place they can’t keep shooting themselves in the foot and losing games they should win.

  158. OMG! Bagels! says:

It’s the first inning. It’s a tied score. Let’s think of it as a 0-0 game which most first innings are. Let’s stop ledge jumping. Let’s stop wanting to kill Kuroda. Let’s realize there are EIGHT FUCKING INNINGS LEFT and probably more.

  159. cjc says:

what are the odds of a Beckett shut down form here on

  160. Countryclub says:

One of the beat writers tweeted that Kuroda had only given up 1 run after the 26 innings that the Yanks had scored coming in to tonight. Unreal.

  161. Dewayne is Wise says:

    1 nothing yankees

  162. RI$P FTW says:

This game will be over at 5am.

  163. Wow, besides Martin even the outs have been loud.

  164. Brian S. says:

    This fucking game.

  165. Monterowasdinero says:

ARod risp success. The ship is turning.

  166. Kramerica Industries says:

Ya know – why on every YES telecast is there a soundclip every time some one reaches base?

I’ve heard this for at least two years now. Probably been going on longer than that.

    • RI$P FTW says:

Honestly, the stations do that because they think their viewers are drooling idiots that need CONSTANT stimulation and visual/audio effects to keep their attention. You see it non-stop in NFL with the dumb robots jumping around. The ‘news’ channels do that 24/7, too.

  167. Bobby Banana says:

    Yankees please use the monster!

  168. Bobby Banana says:

Seeing Saltalamchia hit that home run reminded me that it is possible for a catcher to be a productive hitter.

  169. Monterowasdinero says:

That might have been a bigger inning had not Jeter swung at a high 2-0 fb. Frustrating decision by the Captain.

  170. Brian S. says:

So Kuroda better get that two seamer working or we are fucked.

  171. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Hell get DJ UP

  172. Hiroki is fooling absolutely no one.

  173. cjc says:

are you kidding me this is getting ridiculous pop flys of the wall baltumore chops what next

  174. all you TV watchers, was that a legit single through the left side, or was that the product of having a defensive statue at short stop?

  175. DERP says:

What the hell is going on here?

  176. RI$P FTW says:

    8-6 is a few secs.

  177. RI$P FTW says:

    8-6 in a few secs.

  178. TommyBoy says:

Get this ass out of the game!

  179. Tom says:

The pitch that hit Nava looked like it was barely inside.

Nava stands on top of the plate and the turns into it……. pitch looked like it was maybe 3-4″ inside.

  180. flamingo says:

    Kuroda doesn’t have it tonight…

  181. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Anyway to warm up wise.

  182. DERP says:

Get this POS out of here.

  183. RI$P FTW says:

Is this a good game or a terrible game?

  184. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

Soooo … how’s DJ Mitchell feeling today?

  185. cjc says:

final score 1089 to 1088 yankees

  186. Brian S. says:

    Put in Mitchell. Kuroda sucks.

    • tonight. Kuroda sucks tonight. He’s been great for a solid two months before this.

      • flamingo says:

        Yup, an important distinction there.

      • Brian S. says:

Fuck him. This is the biggest game of the year. We could have buried the Sox and this is what he did.

        • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

This is the biggest game of the year?

          LOL

        • flamingo says:

…There’s another three games to be played this weekend. And the rest of this one. We can still bury them.

        • We’re already like 7 games up on the loss side, I’m not really concerned with the Sox at all. They still have to overtake two teams to be in 2nd in the division. Granted one of them is the Orioles…but it’s halfway through the season and they’re still around. I’m sorry, but this is definitely not the biggest game of the year. If we were to some how loose the next 3 then I would say Sunday would be the biggest game of the year, but if we can just split this series I’d be more than content.

  187. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Hate that wall

  188. Kramerica Industries says:

Kuroda was just rearing to throw a shitbomb tonight, eh?

  189. Tom Zig says:

    Man what an awful game

  190. Bobby Banana says:

Wow. That stat that Cone passed along about the Yankees scoring the least runs in this first half of the season than any Yankee first half since 1992 is pretty depressing.

  191. DERP says:

So burn Mitchell and send him down tomorrow. Who do we call up with Wade?

  192. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Bring up ortiz tommorow

  193. DERP says:

Isn’t this guy known for his strike throwing ability? What the hell is going on?

  194. …according to game day balls 2 and 3 were both in the zone.

  195. your mom says:

Wow, last thing I saw we were up 5-0. Fucking Kuroda, way to shit the bed.

  196. Rooting for U.S. Steel says:

    And now… the pitchers’ duel!

  197. Dewayne is Wise says:

Score 8 here so kuroda can give up 7 before girardi pulls him.

  198. Bobby Banana says:

Funny how the Yankees allow the Sox to score 6 runs on a night when they don’t have Pedroia, Middlebrooks, Crawford, or Ellsbury.

  199. DERP says:

He’s having a shit game, but let’s not totally ignore that Kuroda was awesome for like the last month.

  200. Dewayne is Wise says:

So now beckett becomes cy young.

  201. RI$P FTW says:

I guess Beckett’s thumb is feeling better.

  202. Hall and Nokes says:

Try to clear the pitcher’s spot at least.

  203. Bobby Banana says:

Great. Now Beckett has found his stuff. I’m proud of the Yanks for playing well this year despite some injuries and issues. But I’m pretty sure I speak for everyone when I say that I’m disappointed at how shitty they’ve played against AL East teams.

  204. DERP says:

Someone send Sandusky on this ump.

  205. Kramerica Industries says:

Well, can’t blame the offense if this game goes to the shitter.

Wasting six runs against Beckett is always a recipe for disaster.

  206. Brian S. says:

    Kuroda wasn’t getting that.

  207. Dewayne is Wise says:

    That was not a strike

  208. Tom says:

That’s crap… that was a ball in the first inning.

Now that it looks like Beckett has settled down, it becomes a strike?

  209. Dewayne is Wise says:

Wow kuroda has become the new AJ Burnett.

  210. DERP says:

I want to see Clayton Mortenson tonight.

  211. flamingo says:

They’re just going to keep matching runs per inning and the game will never be over.

  212. Bobby Banana says:

I feel like the prolonged top of the first inning maybe messed up Kuroda and affected the sharpness of his pitches. Next time he should just throw some pitches in the bullpen to stay sharp.

  213. DERP says:

Hopefully he is settling in now.

  214. Brian S. says:

Hey Kuroda, you don’t have to copy everything Beckett does.

  215. Brian S. says:

    The fuck is Russ doing?

  216. DERP says:

I’m so fucking pissed at the Chavez call. That was a legit terrible call.

  217. mt says:

That was a good inning but I am so disappointed Kuroda looks so bad against depleted line-up (no Crawford, Ellsbury, Pedroia, Middlebrooks). Also lefties seem to serve ball off Monster – needs to pitch inside more.

Hopefully first inning delay (because offense took so long) is reason.

At least Beckett has excuse of 2nd start off DL.

  218. swishers fauxhawk says:

    David Beckett

  219. Dewayne is Wise says:

Beckett is better now he had an 8 piece and few cold ones

  220. DERP says:

    Fuck you Derek.

  221. mt says:

Does Jeter braincramp offset the free out Big Papi gave us?

    • Tom says:

I think the Ortiz out was worse. That was the first out of an inning (with a guy on 3rd base).

It probably cost the Red Sox at least a run.

  222. wow says:

    c’mon now…

  223. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Shift killing us .

  224. Brian S. says:

    I hate everything.

  225. Kramerica Industries says:

    Nick friggen Punto.

    Lovely.

  226. DERP says:

Why are you allowing hits to shitty fucking players?

  227. Tom says:

    Nick Punto?

  228. Bobby Banana says:

Why in the world was Aviles playing there? And also the MLB really love to fuck with Yankee fans. We were having a nice, calm month and they just had to put Tampa and Boston on our schedule before the all star break.

  229. Widget says:

Punto? Fuck this game. Can’t wait for Gomez Pile to hit his first homer.

  230. mt says:

How many balls have hit Green Monster for Red Sox?

    • Tom says:

      Four.

Three of them are probably outs in most parks (the Ortiz single/throw out at 2nd didn’t have enough hang time)

  231. Dewayne is Wise says:

Can kuroda please sop throwing the ball over rightside of the plate.

  232. OMG! Bagels! says:

Why do I feel as if there is one 12 year old boy with 12 different identities on these game threads?

  233. Brian S. says:

    Don’t give Kuroda any water.

  234. Bobby Banana says:

Boston can’t win games without that hideous wall. That’s why they did so poorly on their West Coast trip. No big wall at 310 feet, just an outfielder.

  235. Why is Tex holding Papi on? he’s zero threat to run. Especially with two outs.

  236. Bobby Banana says:

Hate the IBB to Ortiz. Ross isn’t exactly Jose Iglesias…

  237. Pat D says:

Well I see this has been a hugely entertaining game thread so far.

Keep up the good work, everyone!

  238. Tom says:

Kuroda is certainly not pitching well, but that is the 2nd time he has stranded a runner on 3rd with 1 out.

  239. Monterowasdinero says:

Kuroda really Sake tonight but we still in it!

  240. Bobby Banana says:

Yankees seriously need to take aim at the Green Monster.

  241. DERP says:

You know who sucks. Andrelton Simmons. I hope that guy busts hard.

  242. captain kiwi says:

what a crazy ass game already. leave work and it’s 5-0, come home and it’s 6-6? GET TO IT YANKEES

  243. Bobby Banana says:

That was a serious dick move by Reggie Jackson. No need to bring out A-Rod’s steroid use for the millionth time. Also who is he to say who is and isn’t getting into the HOF.

    • Pat D says:

He’s a living HOF member, which may allow him to vote on future Veterans Committee ballots. So there’s that distinction.

    • Countryclub says:

It’s not like he only talked about Arod. He went after a bunch of people.

  244. Tom says:

So far Costas has gone through
    - the Yankees/Red Sox games take forever rant
    - the steroids/what do Arod’s #’s really mean if he breaks the HR record

He usually doesn’t get the soapbox out to the 6th or 7th inning. He’s going to have to dig a little deeper in his rant box…. maybe he’ll go the pitch count route?

  245. Brian S. says:

    Fuck. Why did you swing???

  246. Bobby Banana says:

What the hell was that Robbie?!

  247. Widget says:

    Not cool robbie, not cool.

  248. Bobby Banana says:

I hate when Beckett psyches out our hitters by taking long and throwing off their timing. Hate it!

  249. Bobby Banana says:

Swish should bat right handed here. If anything is hit remotely hard it would be off the monster.

  250. Kramerica Industries says:

Loving this sudden spry-ness ARod is showing.

  251. DERP says:

A-Rod showing us some flashes of his old self. Nice to see the trail runner move up as well.

  252. Kramerica Industries says:

You’ve GOTTA be fucking kidding me.

  253. Pat D says:

    Ah, pussyfeathers.

  254. Widget says:

this inning had a chance to be awesome. damn it cano and damn it A-Rod.

  255. Tom says:

Bad break off of 3rd – no secondary lead AND he hesitated

  256. Pat D says:

Saltalamacchia just showed the Latin players how to play the game.

  257. CC's Hammy says:

Can someone tell me why Swisher was swinging on 3-0. Gotta love that agressive Swisher!

  258. Kramerica Industries says:

Swisher singing 3-0 torpedoed the entire inning.

    Fucking idiocy.

  259. Brian S. says:

The Yankees got themselves out of that inning. Beckett didn’t.

  260. captain kiwi says:

    shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttt

  261. wow says:

unbelievable. this game is mad tense.. they really need to knock beckett out of the game.

  262. Brian S. says:

Gonzalez-Hispanic hater-Gomez. Kuroda needs to a quick inning.

  263. ArchStanton says:

This team has a habit of making ridiculously dumb decisions that kill rallies, whether it be sending runners home with nobody out, hitting into weak DPs with the bases loaded, or whathaveyou.

Still, they’re in freaking first place by 5 games so it’s all relative.

  264. Will The Thrill says:

    Meredith Marakovitz is hot.

  265. Lol, the radio booth is talking about the Higgs Boson.

  266. Kramerica Industries says:

    Rats at Fenway?

    Will wonders ever cease!!

  267. boo!!! I has to take the bus…hopefully i only miss like two innings.

  268. DERP says:

    jesus fucking christ derek

  269. Tom says:

Nice play Jetes…. is there any other SS in baseball who doesn’t make that play?

  270. Monterowasdinero says:

DJ with the 6 inch range to his left.

    Awful.

  271. 45yearyanksfan says:

swisher is an effing clown/bum… the guy in front of you walks and you swing 3-0 on a pitch you don’t drive somewhere???????????? can’t wait till this a-hole is outta here

  272. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

Can Martin do anything useful anymore?

  273. Will The Thrill says:

Martin’s ability to block pitches in the dirt has apparently disappeared along with his ability to hit a ball out of the infield.

  274. Kramerica Industries says:

    Yankees deserve that.

  275. DERP says:

Fuck Kuroda. Stop allowing hits to crappy players.

  276. Brian S. says:

    Fuck you Kuroda.

  277. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

    Why is he still pitching?

  278. wow says:

Amauro Gomez… no, really, Amauro Gomez.

  279. DERP says:

Just get through this inning. Don’t let him face the top of the order again.

  280. mt says:

Beckett may still win his sixth straight game against Yanks – what a joke!

  281. Widget says:

the idea that beckett could get a win for his turd burger makes me sad.

  282. Will The Thrill says:

    Justin Upton anyone?

  283. stuart a says:

swisher is a joke and always will be. he sits dead red every pitch and could not hit 285 to save his life.

he has soft #’s. again he performs like this on the yanks, big advantage with men on base all the time etc..

kuroda was horrible tonight….beckett with no curve ball and they let him off the hook. the sawx lineup of misfits is till better then the yanks sad but true…

cano is the only hitter other teams fear….

  284. Tom says:

    Defense is just terrible…

A halfway decent throw to the cutoff man nails AGon at the plate; and he’s only on 2nd due to the Jeter non-error and a wild pitch on a ball that should have been rather easily blocked.

  285. Countryclub says:

That Jeter play had nothing to do with range. He just missed it….which is even worse IMO.

  286. DERP says:

    If he walks Punto…

  287. stuart a says:

martin is just lost.. offensively he has been beyond awful and defensively lately he has been bad.

    usually I like his defense…

  288. Widget says:

5 spot here it comes. suck it beckett.

  289. wow says:

honestly, none of that was helped by Martin. Dude just can’t do anything right these days.

  290. Countryclub says:

I’m not about to say Kuroda is pitching well. But the park and his D has played a huge part in this ugliness.

  291. DERP says:

Chaves is going to do something good here.

  292. DERP says:

    Fat Albers.

  293. DERP says:

Cut Chavez. What a piece of shit.

  294. swishers fauxhawk says:

Holy crap Chavez is slower than holy hell.

  295. Kramerica Industries says:

    How slow is Chavez?

I thought for certain he had a double once it bounced back over Nava’s head.

  296. Karl Krawfid says:

    Great Game Chavez.

  297. mt says:

How many runners will get thrown out on bases – dreadful.

  298. wow says:

well i see that the idiocy is still lingering.

  299. Widget says:

why? why do stupid shit against THIS team?

    • mt says:

Same sloppiness they showed in Tuesday’s game against Tampa – they have had a couple of sloppy ones recently – not sure why?

  300. Bobby Banana says:

Yankees have to have the slowest base runners in baseball. That was cringe worthy.

    • Widget says:

No way, Boston has Gonzalez, Oritz and a whole bunch of white guys. No way any other team is slower.

  301. ArchStanton says:

    Good Lord.

  302. DERP says:

Derek is fucking killing me today.

  303. DERP says:

So glad that Bob Costas can teach about good fundamentals.

  304. mt says:

Costas on MLB Network makes a good point – Jeter and Arod misread their plays which is not good but Chavez (unfortunately like most major leaguers now do) did not run to first full bore – only accelerated when he saw ball get over Nava’s head.

    • MannyGeee says:

That is fucking inexcusable…. Sorry, but seeing major leaguers jog out any perceived out just chaps my ass…

  305. Hall and Nokes says:

I don’t know if YES showed it but MLBN showed Chavezgoing basically 70% to first watching the ball. Maybe Vince Coleman could get away with that.

  306. Kramerica Industries says:

Well, that was completely, not, shocking.

  307. DERP says:

Fuck you Derek. Suck more today.

  308. Tom says:

Albers retired one batter that inning.

    One.

  309. Brian S. says:

Of course. Miller, Padilla, Aceves rest of the way I imagine.

    • MannyGeee says:

We could be so lucky to see our old friend Padilla… He was mostly responsible for the 9 run lead loss back in May, if memory serves..

  310. wow says:

    unreal…

  311. MannyGeee says:

Question for YES viewers, since NESN was concentrating on how Daniel Nava is the second coming of Willie Mays…

Did Chavez slow up on rounding second or hesitate at all, or is he just that ridiculously slow???

    • Tom says:

He wasn’t at a full sprint out of the box, but he wasn’t trotting to first.

Looked like he knew it was a single out of the box and then when the ball bounced over his head he kicked it into gear (if Chavez has a 2nd gear)

    • Brian S. says:

He’s just slow. Physically and mentally.

  312. Monterowasdinero says:

Chavez classic in showing little leaguers everywhere how to run a double into an out at second. So bush league. Man do we suck sometimes. How is this team so far ahead in the division?

  313. Brian S. says:

    6-3ter

  314. DERP says:

If the Yankees don’t allow any runs here, we will win.

If they do allow a run here, we lose.

    Anyone with me?

  315. Bobby Banana says:

Captain Double Play strikes again. I bet it will feel weird when the Yankees one day have a shortstop and catcher that can hit homeruns.

  316. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Kuroda???

  317. Dewayne is Wise says:

Girardi is going to have him rur pole to pole after the game too

  318. mt says:

All Nava seems to do is to try to punch one to left against wall.

    • Bobby Banana says:

Seriously. I think the Yankees would be wise to have that same approach but it’s like they forget it’s there.

      • mt says:

Agreed – but that would take some planning as to approach – here we have Swsisher swinging 3-0 after walks.

  319. MannyGeee says:

OK the best thing about NESN just happened…
    @jennydellNESN.
    That is all

  320. Reggie C. says:

Is it tense in the YES booth… those guys are silent.

  321. Mr. Pink says:

Screw the luxury tax give us Cole Hamels in 2013! Also anyone else thinking not signing CJ Wilson this offseason was a big mistake?

  322. mt says:

Is Boone Logan coming in before Rapada since they also want him to pitch to righty Ross (and AGon, of course)? – seems he has been getting in games before Rapada recently.

  323. Tom says:

Boone Logan? I assume Girardi is going to leave him in for next inning if he retires Ortiz?

Otherwise, I would have to think Rapada is the better option.

  324. Reggie C. says:

rotoworld citing that FOXSPORTS report: D’Backs willing to listen to offers for JUSTIN UPTON.

Lets get the ball rolling on some crazy trade proposals!

    • Brian S. says:

If it was the offseason: Granderson, Banuelos, Segedin.

      • Reggie C. says:

        I was thinking something like:

Mason Williams, Tyler Austin, & Manny Banuelos (apparently he’s throwing down in Tampa so that’s a good sign).

Its J-UP for goodness sake. .898 OPS last season and i think that’s something he’ll be good for for years to come.

    • Mr. Pink says:

Yanks have no impact prospects that interest anyone. All of our prospects worth paying attention to are 3-4 years away from the show. Plus they’re looking for a 3rd baseman. Mike Olt and Nick Castellanos come to mind as guys they probably would be interested in. Tigers and Rangers could use a guy like Upton, Detroit especially.

      • Reggie C. says:

They’re just looking for talent anywhere. A sub .500 team in the NL West isn’t a mere 1 good player away. AZ would demand a couple great prospects and good secondary pieces … a heavy price but one i’d consider.

    • MannyGeee says:

      Banuelos, Phelps, Williams

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

      Everything in the farm.

  325. DERP says:

Ross kills lefties. 930 OPS for his career. Don’t want him facing Logan.

  326. mt says:

I guess we should lokk at this game as 3-2 or 4-3 (down one run) and forget all the bad baserunning and defense that got us here.

  327. MannyGeee says:

    Padilla is warming… Yay!

  328. MannyGeee says:

Wow.. Miller got kinda squeezed n that one… Kinda close.

    • Tom says:

The ump has had an “interesting” game.

He hasn’t called much low in the zone, but that looked like it was high enough.

  329. Mr. Pink says:

    Arod please do something positive.

  330. MannyGeee says:

    Hooray for defensively sound baseball!

  331. Kramerica Industries says:

Gotta cash in on that break.

  332. Mr. Pink says:

Yanks have to score here. The Sox are gift wrapping runs here.

  333. DERP says:

We must have tampered with Andrew Miller again.

  334. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

It is OK to take a walk, Robbie.

  335. Widget says:

Cano that was ball four. Stop doing that.

  336. Frank says:

I hope Tex does something because I’m certainly not counting on Swish.

    • Mr. Pink says:

I don’t know about you but I’m not counting on either of them. I expect Tex to pop up to second and Swish to strike out swinging on 3 pitches. Let’s hope I’m wrong.

  337. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

Swing at Ball 4, take strike 3.
    Nice AB.

  338. Brian S. says:

I fucking hate when Cano swings at ball four. He has done that twice in this game now.

  339. Widget says:

    Tex DP. here it comes.

  340. Dewayne is Wise says:

    That was not a strike.

  341. Monterowasdinero says:

The good news on the Cano K? It would have been an easy caught stealing at 3rd so be happy everyone!!

    /blind optimism

  342. Reggie C. says:

Cano’s been so dominant in June and early July that i’m actually upset when he can’t drive the ball off the Monster.

    Oh well. Only one out.

  343. Cuso says:

Ooh!!! Tex and Padilla have serious bad blood.

  344. Tom says:

Since this game has ha a little of everything, how about a lefthanded hitting Tex serving one off the monstah?

  345. DERP says:

Thankfully they have their only lefty so now Eric Chavez will have a chance to atone for his sins.

  346. DERP says:

Didn’t Tex hit a three run homer in the big comeback game?

  347. Mr. Pink says:

All of our hitters should be batting right handed in Fenway regardless of who’s pitching.

  348. MannyGeee says:

Wow… That strike call or lack of is confusing me

  349. wow says:

they’ve REALLY got to do away with the behind the plate camera angle. It’s useless.

  350. MannyGeee says:

Haha. Late time out… Thatll piss Padilla off

  351. Reports from outside: It’s still hot as balls if you run 1/2 a mile in jeans.

    TEX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Kramerica Industries says:

      I hate jeans.

The only place I would ever wear them is if I’m doing heavy yardwork/maintenence. Otherwise, in non-sweat situations, give me trousers.

      • I’ve always disliked ‘trousers,’ I’ve grown to accept that I have to wear them in most circumstances, and have grown to tolerate them, but give me sweats or jeans any day.

        • Kramerica Industries says:

          Eh.

For me, living in Florida means that I rarely get to wear trousers without extreme discomfort. I’ve (unfortunately) become well accustomed to Florida way of dressing, which I firmly believe is more climate-induced than just because all the people in Florida are ignorant dumbasses.

Whenever I can get back to better climates on a full-time basis, I expect to be able to wear some of my preferred clothes again.

  352. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

    Tex!!!!

  353. DERP says:

Well done. I will pray for you Brian.

  354. JobaWockeeZ says:

WOW I never scream the luck card but that fucking should be a goner.

  355. swishers fauxhawk says:

    Tex!

  356. Kramerica Industries says:

That is the only place in MLB where Tex could hit a stand up triple.

  357. MannyGeee says:

hooray Tex! Fuck your triangle Boston!

  358. Brian S. says:

I LOVE YOU TEIX! IM SO SORRY PLEASE FORGIVE ME!

  359. Frank says:

Sweet- Tex continues to own Padilla

  360. mt says:

Make that 3 of 21 inherited runners score against Padilla.

  361. Widget says:

    thank you terrible ball park.

    • Tom says:

      Is this sarcasm?

That’s a HR in every park and potentially cost the Yankees a run.

      • MannyGeee says:

But it got stuck in that triangle instead of bouncing back and potentially making for a play at home. So the triangle giveth and the triangle taketh away I suppose.

  362. Tom says:

So much for MLB Network’s stat on Padilla allowing just 1 of 19 inherited runners to score.

  363. Frank says:

OK- Swish your turn. Just a SF.

  364. Talk about getting home at the perfect time.

  365. DERP says:

That was a dirty pitch. Not much Swish could do there.

  366. Brian S. says:

    Swisher cannot get an extension.

  367. Dewayne is Wise says:

Leave swisher take your 10 milion and go.

  368. Frank says:

I love Swish but clutch you are not.

  369. MannyGeee says:

Come on Voldemort… Make something happen

  370. Mr. Pink says:

Swish is garbage. See ya in 2013! Fucking pathetic for a guy with so much talent…

  371. mt says:

I knew Swish would do nothing.

He hit a sac fly today so that’s more than we could hope for.

  372. Widget says:

thanks for nothing nick. I won’t miss him one bit if they let him walk.

  373. YanksFanInBeantown says:

    DAMN YOU STERLING!

  374. DERP says:

Chavez is gonna do something big in his next AB. Hopefully it comes in this inning.

  375. MannyGeee says:

WTF was that Padilla? Beer league?

  376. Pasta Stumbling Sojo (formerly StanfordBen) says:

Did El Duque throw that eephus pitch?

  377. Dewayne is Wise says:

In this park not getting runner in is A sin.

  378. Kramerica Industries says:

    Big hit there, Raul.

  379. DERP says:

    You Raul!

  380. Widget says:

Padilla has been throwing the eephus all season.

    • Tom says:

I think it’s pretty cool how gameday actually labels it “Eephus”

not sure if they just started doing that this year, but for some reason I smile wheneve I look on gameday and see it labeled that way.

  381. Tom says:

Ibanez…. that’s the way to pick your teammate up!

  382. Frank says:

    That’s huge. Yay for Raul.

  383. Mr. Pink says:

I should feel good about a two run lead but I don’t. Not in this ballpark.

  384. DERP says:

Boone about to get another win.

  385. Greg says:

Well it looks like things have calmed down since I went on my frusttration drive.

This is a big victory if we can pull it. It takes the pressure off us for the next three games and the Sox bullpen will have been wasted.

  386. Mr. Pink says:

    Ibanez > Swisher?

  387. mt says:

Only downside to inning is you know Padilla’s beaning Tex he next time he gets a chance in this series.

  388. Cuso says:

Don’t know if you all remember, but Padilla & Teix have some serious bad blood. Padilla was staring Tex down on 3rd base through the entire Ibanez AB.

  389. Mr. Pink says:

    Another run would be huge…

  390. Brian S. says:

    Chavy Beisbol!

  391. JobaWockeeZ says:

That was the softest thing I’ve seen in left field. Such an overrated POS.

  392. mt says:

Where are the lefties in Boston bullpen?

  393. Knoxvillain says:

What the fuck is with the RISP today? Keep it up.

  394. MannyGeee says:

“Sure, this Atchison guy is alright, but he needs to do something about his lack of facial hair”

    -Red Sox Nation

  395. JobaWockeeZ says:

On the bright side Freddy can’t be worse tomorrow.

  396. Greg says:

Scott Atchison is the Sergio Romo of the AL. Nothing but sliders

  397. Mr. Pink says:

Martin looking like Billy Crystal at the plate. Weak.

  398. Knoxvillain says:

    Please die, Martin.

  399. wow says:

Martin is certifiably bad lol… Glad we made the comeback. Now a clean inning please!

  400. Monterowasdinero says:

Russ, I never thought I’d say this but……

    You have just been Cerved!!!!!

    /can’t take it anymore

  401. You guys all want to send Swish packing…I’d drive Martin&Stewart to the airport right now and pay for their tickets out of Dodge. At this point I really don’t care who their replacements are…they’d have at least a couple months grace period as far as I’m concerned.

  402. DERP says:

So Brian Roberts has a torn hip. Another blow for the Orioles. He sucks though, so it might be a help for them.

They are getting Greinke, so whatevs.

  403. TommyBoy says:

Jesus H. Christ! Get Martin off the team!

  404. Tom says:

    Solid AB by Martin there.

    Crazy idea?

Don’t know if his back is still bothering him, but with the all star break coming up maybe have him catch one game tomorrow in the DH and then DL him (even if it’s a phantom DL) and use Stewart/Fist pump for the first 10 games after the break. Maybe that gets him back on track?

  405. JobaWockeeZ says:

Okay Martin’s wRC+ is around 74ish after tonight. Hard to defend you from being a black hole when you actually are.

  406. DERP says:

    Why is Boone still in?

  407. DERP says:

930 OPS career against lefties. Not surprising at all.

  408. Tom says:

Yeah Cody Ross can hit lefties….

  409. Pat D says:

    Jesus Christ, Boone.

    Stand prosperity much?

  410. JobaWockeeZ says:

Can’t blame Logan when as someone says above Ross has a .930 OPS…

  411. TommyBoy says:

    Yankees are going to lose.

  412. Karl Krawfid says:

Everyone Knows Cody Ross’s scouting report.

    Jesus Christ.

  413. Frank says:

Boone Logan has caught whatever Cory Wade had

  414. MannyGeee says:

Well… I guess Boone is a LOOGY again?

  415. wow says:

not if Boone has anything to say about it

  416. Mr. Pink says:

    Here it comes. Bullpen implosion.

  417. mt says:

At least Ross is a righty, as opposed to homer by Pena.

(Related note should we consider him for Rightfield next year?)

  418. So..when I was on the bus on the way home and I saw Joe went to Logan I thought to myself “Why not go to Rappada here, start the 7th with Epply, then go to Logan.” I understand tomorrow’s a double header, but they (Epply and Rappada) would only bet throwing max 10 pitches if they did their jobs.

  419. Kramerica Industries says:

They’re trying to give this back all at once…

    AGAIN.

    For fuck’s sake.

  420. Monterowasdinero says:

    Extra innings/midnight game anyone?

  421. Karl Krawfid says:

    Just leave em in

  422. wow says:

ok, enough of Boone… seriously. Enough.

  423. DERP says:

I am really fucking pissed that Logan was allowed to face Ross. Why not go Rapada for Ortiz, Eppley for Ross, and Logan for AGon and Salty. David could have pitched if anyone got on.

  424. Kramerica Industries says:

The last eight outs of this game, if there are to be that many, will just be fucking torture to get.

  425. mt says:

We want an Eppley DP NOW!

  426. mt says:

Something tells me 11 or 12 runs will win this game – not ten.

Logan is starting to fall off – not quite Wade territory but getting there. He has been used a lot so hopefully ASB will refresh him.

  427. I cannot believe that Sheen’s got a centerstage. that disgusts me.

    • Reggie C. says:

      I can’t believe he’s got a ’41 Ted Williams game jersey…

      JESUS…

    • Mr. Pink says:

We live in a society that rewards stupidity. That is why Kim Kardashian, Snooki, and Justin Beiber exist.

      • MannyGeee says:

I would agree, but Bieber is not ‘stupid’ as much as he is a teenage sellout and a product of what I would consider piss poor upbringing. The kid is actually a ridiculously talented musician, but his parents instead let him go down the path of pop star shithead for the quick buck.

        #nohomo

        • I wouldn’t say ridiculously talented, but yeah the kid’s got talent, and honestly at the end of the day for some people money is more important than respect. If an agent appeared at my door and said listen, you can either struggle for years, become critically acclaimed and considered a strong influence for years to come but only be moderately commercially successful (a la Oasis) or make more money than God (a la Bieber) I’d have to think long and hard about it.

      • Nah, Beiber exists for having a minuscule amount of actual musical talent(kid can straight wail on the drums), perfect hair, and perfect teeth.

    • RI$P FTW says:

Mike Tyson was on. He went to jail for rape (even though everyone knows he didn’t do it).

      • Yeah, but he didn’t get asked to do it because he got a reboost in fame by being sent to jail for rape. Sheen was a good/great actor who had fallen out of the public light for the most part, and the only reason anybody began to care about him again is because he became a crack addict and then went crazy as a result of it.

      • eephus_pitch says:

Why would you say you know he didn’t do it?

  428. Kramerica Industries says:

    Yep. Here we go again………………..

  429. JobaWockeeZ says:

Can the crap hitters go back to where they belong?

  430. MannyGeee says:

Well, that was a bum out… He got the GB, just ‘where they ain’t’

  431. DERP says:

    If he walks Avila…

  432. Mr. Pink says:

Girardi should’ve started off with Eppley. Ross is a lefty masher.

    • Tom says:

Eh… You have Gonzalez and Salty 2nd and 3rd that inning; and Salty is way better from the left side.

It would have been fine had he got Gonzalez out.

  433. JobaWockeeZ says:

At least Jeter wants to win. Good play.

  434. Kramerica Industries says:

    Huge play by Jeter.

Would’ve been another chicken-shit hit for the Red Sox – glad that didn’t happen.

    • MannyGeee says:

But I read an hour ago that Jeter has no range and can’t catch a ball with a butterfly net…
      /confused

  435. I give Jeter a lot of shit for his fielding, but that was a nice play.

  436. Frank says:

    Great play!

  437. Tom says:

Phew… that had disaster written all over it.

Thank goodness Bobby V didn’t start the runners – since Eppley apparently strikes out so many hitters and is such an extreme flyball pitcher where you worry about getting double off.

  438. Brian S. says:

    Jeter!

  439. Frank says:

Well, here comes D-Rob in the middle of an inning. Don’t like this move. I’d have stayed with Eppley.

  440. Greg says:

WHat you could do is let Robertson get this out.

Nava, Kalish and Ortiz are all lefties.

    • Robertson can get lefties out, but I still don’t like this move. Now your asking Robertson and Soriano to get 7 outs w/ a 2 run lead and two runners on…and both guys tend to put runners on.

      • Greg says:

What I’m saying is that he could possibly bring in Rapada to play in the eighth

        • Tom says:

          That’s an interesting plan.

The only problem is if he gets into trouble you are committing Soriano to at least a 4 out save – there’s no way Rapada would be allowed to face Ross who’s due up 4th. So it’s a bit of a calculate gamble.

  441. DERP says:

Come on David. Erin has her twitter ready.

  442. Karl Krawfid says:

Epply not good enough to face Punto :(

  443. Mr. Pink says:

Girardi compromising the bullpen for a game we will probably lose.

  444. Kramerica Industries says:

More of that in the 8th, DRob.

No more runs for the guys in red tonight.

  445. MannyGeee says:

DRob making us doubters look like real assholes! Thanks for that!!

  446. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Save Robertson, score 50 runs.

  447. Greg says:

Again since Nava, Kalish and Ortiz are all lefties, Girardi can bring in Rapada to face any or all of them

  448. Brian S. says:

Only one weak hitter out of the next 6. D-rob and MFIKY got their work cut out for them.

  449. DERP says:

This pitcher sucks. Let’s kick his ass.

  450. Mr. Pink says:

How is David Ortiz still good?

  451. DERP says:

I am actually coming around on Brian. I couldn’t stand him for the longest time.

  452. Mr. Pink says:

Wow. Jeets. Weak AB. Everyone knows all you have to do is wait Melancon out.

  453. Mr. Pink says:

Of course our fly balls don’t reach the monster…

  454. MannyGeee says:

Hmmm, who knew that the Red Sox would trade what should have been their SS of the future for a set up man who can’t stay out of AAA… That Cherrington guy is alright by me!

  455. Monterowasdinero says:

We’ve never had a Vidal or a Nuno.

    It may soon be time.

  456. Ivan says:

Remember when Mark Melancon was considered the better prospect than David Robertson?

  457. Pat D says:

Embedded Yankee Melancon is failing miserably.

  458. JobaWockeeZ says:

Nava is even worse than Matsui in the field.

  459. Dewayne is Wise says:

The corpse of a-rod loves fenway.

  460. Monterowasdinero says:

A day off helps ARod. Bat speed is increased.

  461. wow says:

    RAY ALLEN?!?!?!

  462. Tom says:

Cano needs to blast one here and reduce my blood pressure.

  463. MannyGeee says:

Look at A Rod keeping the inning alive to give Cano a chance to make something happen.what a good guy. I imagine him to be a generous lover…

    Again, #nohomo

  464. Brian S. says:

Allen and Rondo hate each other NEWS AT ELEVEN

  465. Mr. Pink says:

These last six outs are going to be hard to get while keeping the lead safe.

  466. Dewayne is Wise says:

Lets see if d-rob is really back. 91 fastball not good

  467. Frank says:

anyone surprised Ibanez still in LF instead of Wise?

    • Monterowasdinero says:

Not much ground to cover and Raul is crafty off the wall with shorter throws needed. He’ll be in in the 9th though if we have a lead. Tough decision because Raul has hit well tonight.

  468. MannyGeee says:

    Wow, Aceves looking thin

  469. Dewayne is Wise says:

    92 what happened to 95

  470. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

    That’s not a strike????

  471. Kramerica Industries says:

Yep. Clean inning not possible. Just hope this doesn’t hurt them.

  472. Brian S. says:

    Ugh. Here’s Ross again.

  473. MannyGeee says:

Fuck… Ortiz can hit, man… Say what you want about him but dude can straight out hit.

  474. Tom says:

I don’t like this ump… he seems unwilling to call both the high and low strike. Usually the umpire will call one of them.

  475. Mr. Pink says:

That’s it we have to sign Ortiz next year! The dude does not age.

  476. bobtaco says:

    Drob still doesn’t look 100%…

  477. Frank says:

Say what you want about Ortiz. Dude can hit.

  478. Kramerica Industries says:

    Criminy.

  479. Greg says:

I would seriously consider bringing in Rapada to face AGon if Ross gets on

  480. Ivan says:

    Typical D-Rob….

  481. JobaWockeeZ says:

Can we have a stress free inning please? I mean half of this lineup is garbage come on…

  482. Kramerica Industries says:

    Where’s Rapada?

    • Kramerica Industries says:

      Nevermind.

He’s pitched, like, three or four straight games. Can’t jump on Joe for that.

  483. DERP says:

We should trade Robertson in the offseason. This act won’t last forever and it would be nice to sell high.

    • Brian S. says:

+1. Also you know a team would pay a hefty price for a cost controlled late inning relief pitcher to avoid handing out a Papelbon type contract. Look what Oakland and Houston got.

    • Mr. Pink says:

You’re crazy! Even with his walk issues he’s still one of the best relievers in the AL.

  484. Brian S. says:

Does Girardi know that Soriano has struggled against lefties in his career?

  485. Mr. Pink says:

Damn you David Ortiz. Boston doesn’t know how lucky they are to have you…

    • MannyGeee says:

      This. 1000 time this.

Cherrington is going to fuck up the Ortiz thing this winter and have to watch him play another 4 years in toronto or Tampa… And we will laugh alllll the way to the fucking bank

  486. Hall and Nokes says:

    One more out to Mo

  487. Frank says:

Disappointed in D-Rob. Gotta get the third out.

    • Betty Lizard says:

I’m disappointed in Robertson’s reaction. I just don’t like the displays of temper and prefer stoical acceptance. Just me, probably.

      • Definitely just you. I used to love watching Paulie go nuclear on water coolers when I was a kid.

        • Betty Lizard says:

Like Paulie’s antics in retrospect and love hearing him talk about them but in real time I prefer self-mockery or a scowl or a mutter to beating up on inanimate objects.

Wonder if Mrs. Robertson (hee) will tweet her disapproval tonight about taking Robertson out of the 8th?

  488. mt says:

The relief pitching in this game has been shaky.

Walk on 4 pitches to Ross – ugh!

  489. Ivan says:

    Wow interesting move here…

  490. Dewayne is Wise says:

Joe really wants this game, soriano for 4 really

  491. stuart a says:

    wow SOriano for 4 outs.

RObertson did not do his job again. he has not been close to last years abberation this year.

can’t they put this away please.

  492. Greg says:

    The numbers.

    AGon against righties: .260/.324/.383
    Lefties: .285/.321/.439

  493. Cuso says:

Yikes.this feels like a mistake. Let Houdini do his thing. Sory for 4 outs????? Big uh-oh.

  494. TommyBoy says:

Um, I guess Robertson sucks now.

  495. Kramerica Industries says:

    Soriano vs. Gonzalez

Strap down! And hope this doesn’t end too badly.

  496. So our bullpen for one of the games tomorrow is seriously
    Rappada
    Qualls
    Mitchell
    and Wade.

Is there anyway that Hughes can pitch the day-cap of the double dip tomorrow? Hopefully he can pitch very deep into the game then we have most of if not all of our bull pen for the nightcap.

  497. Mike Eder says:

Here’s a shameless self post. When Robertson is decelerating the torque on his body, he usually slows himself down with his oblique, he’s now bending over and transferring the torque to his back and legs. There’s a GIF inside to show you his mechanics before and after.

  498. Chop It Up says:

Give me a break with this “not a 4 out guy” bullshit, he makes like $15 mill a year, he can handle pitching to one more batter.

  499. Cuso says:

Soriano with the ready made excuse of mound problems

  500. Kramerica Industries says:

All of this has happened with two outs and nobody on, by the way.

  501. DERP says:

That was a gift. Soriano threw four straight balls.

  502. mt says:

    0-9 against Soriano.

  503. Kramerica Industries says:

    And………

    Exhale

  504. Brian S. says:

    Yeahhhhhhh buddy.

  505. Mr. Pink says:

Thank God. That could’ve been messy. Still don’t feel safe!

    :-(

  506. Tom says:

It’s never easy… but they just need to get 3 more outs!

  507. Greg says:

Best part of that is that he now gets to face Salty and then the rookies

  508. Monterowasdinero says:

0-9. 3 more outs to untuck.

  509. DERP says:

If Chavez gets up, he will do something good.

  510. Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

    More insurance runs please!!!

  511. OMG! Bagels! says:

Where have you gone Mo Rivera?
Evil Empire turns its lonely eyes to you.

  512. JobaWockeeZ says:

Freddy needs to go deep tomorrow.

  513. Tom says:

What was Adrian Gonzalez doing on that groundball?

The year he’s been having he would get absolutely hammered in NY. (I guess there are enough other targets in Boston)

  514. MannyGeee says:

I hate to jump on the bandwagon, but shit does Swisher look horrible as of late.

  515. Monterowasdinero says:

This is gonna be a high comment count game thread.

    It’s a new stat.

When RAB gets a game thread comment count over 900, we need a new way of categorizing things.

  516. Mr. Pink says:

Damn it! Why is Melancon doing well? I thought he was an embedded Yankee!

    • 28 thisyear says:

At thi point, he knew the Yankees were going to win. He had to pitch well so the red sox use him again. When him blowing up is necessary for the Yankees to succeed, he will. Right now he is building trust

  517. Kramerica Industries says:

Swisher swung at ball four, and then struck out.

    Again.

    Helluva game, Swish.

  518. Dewayne is Wise says:

Swisher needs to be a platoon player”

    • Mr. Pink says:

Horrible at situational hitting, his walks are down, his strikeouts are up, but he’s still better than most right fielders out there.

  519. Captain Gift Basket says:

Nick Swisher? Has anyone seen Nick Swisher lately?

  520. All you people who want Swish gone…who do you suggest we replace him with?

  521. JobaWockeeZ says:

Yankees score 10 runs but none of them against Melancon.

  522. Kramerica Industries says:

    Salty/Gomez/Aviles

If Soriano can’t negotiate his way through that, then we’re at another level of fucked-up-titude.

  523. JobaWockeeZ says:

Salty has a sub 300 OBP yet a wRC+ over 110 I think. The fuck.

  524. DERP says:

I wonder what Salty thinks of Soriano’s untucking thing.

  525. Dewayne is Wise says:

Hey crabman if lf for the bombers.

  526. Ro says:

What? McDonald in for “defense” at a place he didn’t defend all that well and Wise to RF? Where is Swisher and why isn’t Wise manning LF? Weird

    • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too) says:

huge RF … good to have speed there
Swisher is the opposite of speed

      • Ro says:

I get that RF at Fenway isn’t any paradise, but I have yet to remember when Swisher was replaced only to weaken LF. At least that’s how I feel about McDonald and having him on the team as a bench player worries me. I do not remember any fine moments while on the Sox team. I don’t know though. It’s just weird.

  527. MannyGeee says:

Martin just let out a visible “FUCK” when that ball went through his legs… Just having a bad life right now…

  528. Greg says:

    Nasty slider

  529. DERP says:

Salty bailing out Sori big time.

  530. mt says:

He refused to throw him a fastball – now school the rookie.

  531. Brian S. says:

Wise-Granderson-McDonald outfield. Boston fans are ready to start a riot.

  532. Dewayne is Wise says:

Justin upton but the yanks dont have the prospects.

  533. DERP says:

Is there any ugly chick here that can help Russ out?

  534. mt says:

    This guy swings hard.

  535. JobaWockeeZ says:

I’ll cry manly tears of joy is Sori opts out.

  536. Zooboy says:

At this point, I’m not sure which will make me happier: two quick outs and a Yankee win. Or two quick outs so I can stop listening to Bob Costas.

Come on Sori: make it stop!

  537. MannyGeee says:

Mauro Gomez will be the new Melky Cabrera… After Cherrington trades him to KC for Bruce Chen or some shit.

  538. Brian S. says:

    One more! MFIKY!

  539. Dewayne is Wise says:

    4hour game

  540. DERP says:

Everyone go to bed right now

  541. DERP says:

    Untuck that bitch.

  542. Pat D says:

OMG! A win in Fenway with no home runs!!!

  543. Dewayne is Wise says:

    Finally a call

  544. Get Phelps Up says:

    Untuck.

  545. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Untuck that shit.

  546. Kramerica Industries says:

    And ballgame.

3-0 at Fenway this season. A couple more wins this weekend would look nice.

  547. MannyGeee says:

    Activate untuck in 3…..2……

  548. Brian S. says:

    Baaaaaaaalllgaaaaaaaaaaaaame

  549. OMG! Bagels! says:

Amazing how everyone thought Sori’s untuck was disrespectful when he first started doing it, now everyone’s waiting for it. Funny how saving games can change a Yankee fan’s attitude.

  550. Monterowasdinero says:

Excellent result and Girardi saved Rapada for tomorrow!

  551. JobaWockeeZ says:

2 more wins to take Boston out of the race by the break.

  552. BK2ATL says:

Gotta say, I love Soriano’s jersey untuck deal. It’s badass without showing up the other team. Kinda like, day’s done. Time for a cold one.

    Yanks win!!!

    • mt says:

I actually like it too – did not think I would. It is very internal but gives message of “it’s over”.

To contrast, Joba’s fist pump is obnoxious but not quite on level as Valverde’s act or Rodney’s Usain Bolt imitation.

      • mt says:

Also in terms of yankee fans hating it I think criticism was originally that it was not “yankee-like”. sort of like criticism of the walk-off pies.

I do not remember everybody going crazy about it when Sori was on Tampa Bay and doing it. I remmeber it but just thought it was a little strange. It never really annoyed me when he did it at TB.

I loathe Valverde and “hat to the side” Rodney. Also Papelbon.

The real hypocritical one is Joba – no way to defend that as “classy” or not showing up other team.

(As an aside, I hate the Mets but it was funny to watch their walk-off win against Papelbon yesterday when he imploded on the mound at Citi Field. He also got hit ny the ball and did a funny pratfall – priceless.)

        • BK2ATL says:

The walk-off pie thing criticism wasn’t because it was un-Yankee-like. The criticism was that AJ Burnett looked like an ass-clown doing it, which resulted in the un-Yankee-likeness. Yankees’ don’t look like assclowns in uniform. LOL!!!

Closers are just strange birds. They each have their own way of psyching themselves up, and explode in different ways when successful.

We’ve just been spoiled by the calming presence of Mo for these many years.

And even though he’s in the NL now, I still chuckle when I see Paplepuke screw up.

      • BK2ATL says:

Those guys are pretty extra with the celebrations. Hahaha!!!

I just think Soriano’s gotten a raw deal with the NY media, and now some fans as a result of that, as if he’s done something negative. It appears that he’s just a introvert, in contrast to Nick Swisher. His teammates appear cool with him. Never read that he’s a clubhouse headache or anything.

I just never got the intense dislike for him around here. He got hurt last year, came back and pitched pretty effectively. This year, he’s earned every cent of his contract with Mariano being out.

If the dude wants to untuck his shirt after the game, shit, let him. He ONLY does it when he closes out a win.

  553. Monterowasdinero says:

    Sox nipped and untucked.

  554. I’m just saying I’d bang Meredith.

  555. mt says:

    Great win.

I hope tomorrow Giradi actually uses Wade (even in both games) and DJ Mitchell (and Rapada of course) – 4 off days coming up soon. Not sure how many pitches Garcia can throw tomorrow.

  556. Tom says:

Huge win…. takes the possibility of a Boston sweep out of the equation – really the only meaningful bad outcome coming into this series. Yankees will be 5.5 up on Boston at the break no matter what

Also, losing after scoring 5 in the first would have meant dealing with the inevitable “Is Boston back” stories at ESPN.

Now they just need to get 1 out of 2 tomorrow and basically have all the pressure on Boston to win on Sunday.

  557. Greg says:

AND. They didn’t hit a homer

  558. Monterowasdinero says:

Soriano never shakes off a sign and he doesn’t just throw one pitch.

  559. DERP says:

Steve Pearce just homered off CJ Wilson.

I like how Girardi sensed the moment and went for it. The sweep was the one thing he had to avoid and after being up by 5 runs and then by 3 runs late he used relievers more than he would if he were conserving them.

As we can see by Kuroda’s performance, no guarantee that “good” Hughes does not lay a giant egg tomorrow against a higher scoring Red Sox team in Fenway and Garcia may still be limited. Morales has been dealing and Doubront made us look foolish in the 15-9 game.

Glad we have one game under our belt in the win column. We hopefully at least split tomorrow.

I remember Jeter having to tell Swisher to put his cap on when he was doing an on-field interview with Kim Jones. There is a decorum to the Yankees but untucking shirts isn’t one of those things.

I know. We r overpaying Soriano at $13 million per year. With Mo gone, thank God we got him closing out at Fenway.

  563. Kevin says:

DOubrant made us look bad in April..since then he has been less then stellar. I will be happy with a split.

Darnell respectfully loses the dreads and facial hair because he now plays for…
