Game 98: Without Alex
ByThis seven-game West Coast trip has been a nightmare on the field and unfortunately it’s going to linger over the next few weeks. Nick Swisher is expected back from his mild left hip flexor strain this weekend, but Alex Rodriguez will likely be out until sometime in early-to-mid-September after a pitch broke a bone in his left hand last night. Losing games on the field bad enough, but the Yankees can absorb some of those given their seven-game lead in the AL East. Losing players to significant injuries is another matter entirely. Here’s the starting nine…
RF Ichiro Suzuki
SS Derek Jeter
2B Robinson Cano
1B Mark Teixeira
CF Curtis Granderson
DH Raul Ibanez
3B Eric Chavez
LF Andruw Jones
C Russell Martin
RHP Ivan Nova
This afternoon’s game is scheduled to start at 3:40pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy.

Today’s gonna suck, even if Nova throws a perfect game with 27 strike outs and the Yankees hit 18 home runs.
Not if the ninja peels Alex Gordon away from KC, or Chase Headley from SD.
I’d go for Gordon before Headley. I don’t care that much about Headley and some of the fans’ boners for him are pretty insane.
Maybe Betances, Marshall, and Murphy could get it done. Or Boone Logan and Andruw Jones since it’s Dayton Moore and he loves those ex-Braves.
For sure. I’m not a big headley fan, but some people seem to think that Headley is very valuable. That if you take him out of petco he will hit 40 hr. Gordon hasn’t played 3b regularly since 2009, although i’d still take a shot with him if he came cheap, nice lefty bat could hit a lot of homers.
He’s cheap and would certainly be an above average hitter in YS. I think he’d hit twenty something homers, which could be enough to cover losing Swisher.
Gordon is basically a good fielder platoon LFer. Last year he hit lefties but other than that he’s shown over his career he’s shown he can’t handle them, including this year. Why is everybody on here so in love with Alex Gordon?
Former top prospect shine
A career 90 wRC+ doesn’t scream “can’t handle lefties,” and neither does the 89 wRC+ this year.
He walks, hits for average, has some pop and plays excellent defense.
He was a top 10 player in baseball last year and is a top 20 player this year by fWAR.
I’m honestly asking you: What’s not to like?
What if they are all on 3 strikes?
Boo weekday day games. Gameday for me.
Is it not on mlb.tv today?
I’m sure it is, but my internet at work is too slow and I don’t get good enough cell reception on my phone for the stream. Ah well. I just gotta rely on my friends at RAB to provide context
Oh this will be very fun for you then, especially when the trolls pounce
Having to rely on gameday definitely makes Troll Slaying more difficult.
I usually just leave it up to Mike the Knight and RT but I guess I could do some slaying today
Pinch hit for me today buddy
I got you I mash trolls
Sub-.300 OBP leadoff hitter FTW.
Hopefully that nonsense ends when Swisher comes back.
Hopefully, but you may not want to hold your breath waiting for that. From Chad Jennings’ pregame notes:
Girardi said the lineup “could change a little bit” when Nick Swisher gets healthy, but he didn’t say that change would come at the top of the order.
Doesn’t sound overly optimistic for it to be changing, but we can hope that he just didn’t want to say it out loud at this point.
i know swisher has played 3rd before just a thought , what do you think mike ?
he’s a lefty, its incredibly rare for him to play 3rd
He hasn’t played a single inning there is his major or minor league career.
Where the hell did he play 3rd?
in his off-season beer league…
because you KNOW Swish love hisself some beer league softball.
You “know?”
No he hasn’t….ever
Do you mean Tex?
We need to salvage the trip with a W. Cashman says they are not looking for a 3rd baseman, Chavez and Nix are the solution.
And you believed him? Heh Heh
Of course he said that. It’s not like he’s gonna say “Oh man, we are desperate for third base help! Can anyone throw us a bone?”
It’s all about leverage. He may not end up making a move, but he’s going to say the same thing to the press either way.
bubba crosby is our starting cf.
and Swish is our starting 1B…
oh ok my bad then would of been nice
Granderson, Ibanez, Chavez
That is quite a few lefty hitters with large platoon splits, hopefully the M’s are out of lefty bullpen weapons today.
Grandy mashes lefties not sure what you mean about platoon for him
Granderson doesn’t really have a big platoon split, but Ibanez and Chavez back to back is concerning, especially with Andruw already in the game.
They face RHPS.
Talking about the late innings when the bullpen comes into play. If you can’t follow along, don’t participate.
We still have Nix. Perez is a wild thing. Yeah, you are right, it is concerning.
Scott Hairston is being shopped? Interesting.
GET HIM!. A better version of Andruw Jones.
Mets want an immediate help. I don’t know what. For me, Qualls for Hairston is only way to get it done.
Qualls and Wade might get it done. Mets are desperate for bullpen help.
uhm,….no, no he isn’t. they’re actually about equal this yr except hairston has played a few more games and last yr he played more games than jone sbut jones was better.
Uh Hairston has a much better lefty split than Jones.
Cross him off, he never plays 3B. damn it.
Over/under Stuart’s appearances in the game thread is set at 1.5.
uhmmmmmm over at 3
He wasn’t banned yet?
That Ichiro batting at the bottom of the lineup thing lasted awhile huh?
Eh. A-Rod’s hurt so something’s going to change.
Plus Swish.
Today sucks ass.
I like this lineup. Ichiro is gonna turn it on, just the situation to wake him up.
Is anyone thinking that Ichiro is batting leadoff just because it could be his last game in Seattle?
no
or because the injury bug has mashed us so either Ichiro leads off or Chavez bats 5th… pick your poison.
I wonder if the yanks talked to M’s about Brandon League and/or Vargas? Those would be a couple solid additons for the stretch run.. League would be first in 6th inn type guy for us.. Vargas would make us have a chance to pitch well every 5th day..
CC
Kuroda
Nova
Hughes
Vargas
I’d take Phelps over Vargas, and Pettitte when he comes back. Yankees aren’t going to get any pitching after the A-Rod injury.
I think league is a realistic option, I actually had thoughts about him my self. Vargas would be a nice idea but we don’t really need a starter but I think if something happens between now and the 31st cash should possibly consider it
nah… I would like to let Orioles get Vargas first. If he pitches well in AL east contest then Yanks can try to sign him a good contract as FA after this season.
The sequence of Martin, Ichiro and Jeter? Oh boy!
Jeter is good.
Rodriguez’ lack of production, especially w/RISP not that hard to replace. Getting players like Gordon or Headley not realistic as Yanks will only deal mid-level (or lower) prospects. Polanco or Wiggington (my preference) possibilities…
Just put Chavez in there, he’s a great hitter with RISP.
Wait… he’s been significantly worse than A-Rod.
I suggested this somewhere else too. They are both free agents at year end, and philly doesn’t need both now that Howard is back, so it leaves them both to fight over 3b.
I would have liked the Yankees to pick up Hanley (based on what it actually took to get him). Too bad he was traded a couple minutes too early…
I’m surprised it took next to nothing to get him. He just needs a team that isn’t run by tards.
Can we try to avoid the hatred and anger from last night. I dislike that
you must be new here…
Geez, Ken. Sound more somber and subdued.
Speaking of the booth, as I often do – Coney is the best color guy on YES. Yay, or nay?
Yay, yay, yay.
Nay, Nay, Nay and a big ol’ Hell Nay!!
“Chavez is the solution and Jayson Nix is the solution, and whoever we have in the farm system are going to have to be the solution,” Cashman said. “I’m very comfortable with Eric Chavez as Alex’s replacement.”
You believe him?
He also once said he was comfortable with Bubba Crosby in CF.
Nick Swisher was gonna be their first baseman in 2009, too.
He always lies in the offseason. When it comes to trades he’s stingy. Unless it’s a pitcher. He’ll do anything if you can throw 90.
He doesn’t like to give up leverage.
Not sure if anyone has noticed, but Chase Headley used to be an everyday outfielder. Keeping this in mind, wouldn’t it make sense to make a trade, have him fill in at 3rd the rest of the year while Alex DHs, and then have him slide into left field next year as a stopgap? It’s great to have that kind of flexibility, he can easily move back into 3rd to give A-Rod a rest day, and whenever the day comes that A-Rod needs to just DH, which isn’t too far off, Headley becomes the everyday 3B. Gives us time to figure out another outfielder (granted he was never a great defensive OF, but when you’re cutting payroll you can’t have it all), solves the immediate problem, and gives A-Rod an heir apparent. Granted A-Rod is on the payroll longer, but Headley is cost controlled through 2014; once his contract is up, so is the austerity plan. They can sign him back if he has a good run in New York.
Has he played the outfield in the last few years at all?
If he has, that might solve two problems in one.
Just checked. He has not played the outfield since 2009.
True, but I think it’s worth seeing if he can. It’s not like we’re doomed if he can’t handle it immediately. It’s left field, guys like Manny Ramirez have been able to hide there. I have little doubt that he could handle it.
Guys like Manny Ramirez don’t have to hide in YSIII LF for 82 games a season. Not saying Headly can’t do it or fake it well enough, just that we don’t know.
That being said, it would be nice to find out prior to next season if that’s the direction the team goes. (Actually RF is more likely.)
Yeah didn’t think about that. I don’t know how his arm is, but maybe he could handle right.
And sorry for the double reply, but if he genuinely can’t handle it, find another left fielder and move A-Rod to DH. We could certainly cheap out a bit on left field production when we’re adding an impact bat at 3rd and theoretically getting better production out of A-Rod.
Headley is a pretty good defensive 3B. That trade would make no sense. You would be overpaying for headley’s defensive abilitis, then next year not use him at all.
nope. He has not played OF for 3 years including this season. 3B is his home. His LF defense is godly awful but he can get it work just fine at RF in YS3. Petco has very spacious outfield area.
Dead Horse, have you met my friend Bat?
Please direct me to where the idea of him playing the outfield whined? If it was very recent sorry, I haven’t been able to read articles with lots of comments because the iPhone version freezes up. I had yet to see anyone point it out.
Please direct me to where the idea of him playing the outfield was mentioned. If it was very recent sorry, I haven’t been able to read articles with lots of comments because the iPhone version freezes up. I had yet to see anyone point it out.
Check out the Stephen Drew thread from earlier today, it was mentioned no less than 10 times.
That exact one caused my iPhone to freeze up and Safari to crash. Sorry, I just think it’s a legitimate idea, and until the current problem is solved I wouldn’t call it a dead horse
no worries dude… no one is arguing its legitimacy, its just been covered a TON in the past 18 hours. and in fact, if you were to do some digging you would see it mentioned prior to the A Rod injury when discussing how to replace Swisher.
Like, weekly…
I kinda hope Nova plunks some mariner
I am nowhere near Seattle, but its apparantly sunny and 71 degrees. To which Suzyn referred to it as “Sweater Weather”…
is she hella old or is 71 degrees not sweater weather?
71 is wear whatever the hell you want to wear weather because nothing is uncomfortable in that weather at least nothing shy of abominable snowman level clothing.
Who cares what she meant?
I find low-70s kind of chilly. Guess I agree with Suzyn for once.
It’s fashionable here at RAB to pick apart every word of what everyone says.
I guess you could call it ‘lawyer-douche culture’. It’s thick on this site.
Safeco Field is a fine ballpark, and Seattle is a fine city (and the home of my favorite show not named Seinfeld).
Looks spectacular today. Hopefully, the Mariners will field a good team again. Knowing them, that’s not gonna happen for a long time still to come.
Ichiro grounds out, leadoff fail, Seattle won the trade.
nobodys said lets go get david wright yet !
Because the Mets would be crucified if they did that.
ok, these fuckers keep coming inside
And there’s the answer
best way to answer. Now we just need Nova to plunk a few
No.
Jeter in the 2 hole blows
Jeter got confused and thought he was Granderson
Holy shit, Derek.
Always a rare sight to see him unload like that. Legit pull power.
Jeter making up for Alex’s injury. At least one person has stepped up.
Well that worked well.
That is, easily, the longest HR I’ve ever seen Jeter hit. Holy shit.
BTW, this hitting people/brushing back thing is getting fucking ridiculous. We NEED to plunk a Mariner or two.
Aim for Jack Z. Find him in one of the boxes and hit him just for fun.
“What? The ball slipped, backwards and through the window directly into his face.”
It’s just like Ichiro. He can, he chooses not to.
Is this a joke? I hate when people say this. Ichiro can’t. Nobody in baseball would choose to beat out an infield hit that doesn’t move anyone over instead of a home run. Ichiro has no power. Batting practice doesn’t count. If you can’t put on a show at batting practice as an ML hitter, then there’s a problem.
Jeter pulled one??? Holy crap.
Oh my god I was just saying to myself how when the ball came in on him his stance reminded me of pening day 96 when he went deep and boom!
ARod will be missed but I sure do like this line up better. Think Grandy is better in the 5.
Me too. Except I would switch Jeter and Ichiro.
No, Ichiro can steal or at least get good jumps to keep out of the DPs. And Jeter clearly has a lot of power that he’s about to show off now that ARod is out of the lineup. He just didn’t want to show ARod up.
I am not positive Ichiro still has the contact skills to be a prototypical #2 hitter. Jeter can still hit.
I don’t like Ichiro at the top. He sucks offensively.
agreed and when Swish comes back he should be 2
Jeter
Swish
Cano
Teix
Grandy
DH
Chavez
Martin
Ichiro
I’d like to see what ichiro does first. If he turns it around then keep him at the top. He can still steal bases.
His stolen bases is may down so i think a move down to the heart is better. Let more people get on base in front of him.
Perhaps her nips get really hard at that weather. Need to hide the twins.
Is it me or are commercial breaks always extremely short when the Yankees play in Seattle?
Need more time to run to kitchen to get ur cheetos?
“Eric Chavez is the solution,” Cashman told ESPNNewYork.com
Hopefully that means ARod will be back before the playoffs start or it’s time to start drinking.
Again, do you believe him? I don’t believe him.
Or it means nothing.
Looking over the Mariners line up on the ESPN box score is mildly amusing. It’s almost Jack Z. wants them to suck. Outside of Jaso, they have 8 AAAA players.
*almost like
I can’t believe how bad Ackley is.
So am I. Probably just a sophomore slump like Heyward has last year, but much worse. He will end up fine I believe, but my God.
And as you say that, Saunders, hitting .297 of late, lines a base hit
This guy is having a pretty good series so far. Too bad he’s Michael Saunders. He’ll come back to earth once he remembers who he is.
That AAAA lineup beat us yesterday, and has 2 hits in the 1st.
Headley just went yard. Go get him.
you know the other day Mike posted a picture of Ibanez when he was a catcher on twitter, I wonder if he was trying to suggest something…
I’ll take how to make Ibanez even worse for $200 Alex.
Or “how to make the Yankees’ catching situation better.”
Martin’s not THAT bad.
Nova not looking too good so far.
“Jaso is a little different than the other Seattle hitters”
– John Sterling
“Different” in that he can actually hit?
Nova’s looked bad in his last couple starts.
he has no command lately. just seems lost.
Yeah atleast in the firs inning it seems like he has thrown 20+ pitches in the 1st for I don’t know how many starts now
I would be cool if the bases were loaded and Nova had hit them all
oh brother. Bases loaded for Nova already, huh?
Its amazing how a season changes on a knife edge. 6-7 days ago, we were rolling. Now we look like the worst team in baseball
Thats why you can never let up.
I never understood that logic. Why would ANY team “let up”? You really think they stopped trying? That they said, “Well, now that we have a big lead it’s all good if we all play like shit.”
The only way I see “letting up” as making sense is if the manager starts resting good players all the time. Otherwise I don’t really think it makes sense to say that the team “lets up”.
Well i never said they let up. I am talking more general things where as it reaches the end, you can’t overdue extra rest. Got to go after every win you can. I dont think they have let up at all, they just ran into a hot A’s team and had some bad luck.
All right, cool. In that case we agree.
When was the last time the Yankees had a road trip this bad? I don’t think they win this game so 1-6 and losing A-Rod and Swisher is pretty damn bad.
God almighty, Ivan.
This is putrid.
did they just say 97mph on that fastball? Dang.
Nova took Freddy’s advice I guess. Against the putrid lineup. Why not.
Now I just want a grand slam so I don’t have to watch this crap.
such hate and anger
Dislike. Big difference
I can hear the trolls ah knockin’
Of what value is a comment like that? It’s simply your passive aggressive, bullshit way of saying, “God, they look f**king awful right now!” Don’t be a pussy, just be honest.
They look fine to me? I really could care less how many pitches a pitcher throws in any inning and we are playing a shit team I was pointing out the trolls are complaining now
Come on Nova. Reaches back for 98 mph but no control. If Nova can mix last year’s command with this year’s velocity, holy crap. But too bad it seems that the extra power from him seems to be messign with his command.
That’s fantastic. Impressive Nova.
And the hatred and evil will start coming in.
Thanks alot for ruining my dat
*day
Says the person who just said he wished for a grand slam so he could turn the game off so he doesn’t have to “watch this crap”
As I said. DISLIKE. Its a big difference.
You are rooting for something that would help the team lose…. you can spin it any way you want – but it is ironic that you are saying here come the haters and the trolls after a comment like that.
Also your cap locks seems to be randomly toggling on and off.
There’s a big difference between what I said and what was going on last night. People were calling for heads last night.
Haha. He’s such a dipshit, isn’t he?
There’s a difference between saying “This game is crap” and “Die Girardi”
28 pitches already 1st inning, good thing Girardi didnt use the entire bullpen in the 8th inning yesterday
He didn’t use Phelps, dummy. If you are going to insult GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT
Except that David Phelps is not limited to a long reliever.
Nova can finish 6 innings with 110 pitches easily if he struggles through.
I’m sure none of them are available today after facing one batter each yesterday.
game day for me – how did they miss the dp? nova not covering 1st?
guess it didn’t matter, but still. that was irritating as shit.
Tex’s throw was off line.
radio made it sound as if Tex had a tough play to make on the ball.
Alright Nova come out next inning and DESTROY THEM ALL EEEEVAHHHNNN
i asked mike in a chat if Ryan Braun was best player in baseball, and he said ot even same divison(votto and mccuthen). I disagreed then and now.. Braun is a freaking beeeassst! 3=4 2B,HR, 3rbi, inten BB…etc Oh ya, the HR was to tie it in the 8th down 5-3 and 2out..
I think he is better than mccutchen not votto but I can see why mike would say that, McCutchen probaby will be better in the future.
McCutchen also plays a more premium position.
And yeah, Votto is the better hitter.
Braun took steroids. So don’t bother.
Allegedly.
Says the overruled decision
I don’t care what braun did or didn’t take.. Hes playing right now, and hes putting up crazy numbers and in the clutch as well.. Hes freaking insane! Also, a good OF’er…
318BA 28hr 69rbi 17sb Thats freaky good..
which is better… yahoo or espn for gamecast… mlb froze out again. fuck it.
stupid url. meant for new post.
DAMMIT NOVA!
solid baseknock for Grandy man…
Lets get this lead back fella’s! Ibanez in 1-1count, with grandy on 1st and no out. Grandy man steals 2nd! Sweet!
Every fielder for us today besides Grandy has at least 1 gold glove and most have multiple…crazy…although not all were earned and Cano is going to win it again this year.
1 cano
6 chavez
5 jeter
4 tex
10 andruw
10 ichiro
1 martin
Here we go in guy on 3rd less then 2out.. Its up to chavez to go against the odd’s adn get the guy in… God knows, this is gonna be tough..
We didn’t get the run in…LOL What else is new? Jesus!
Grandyman, gotta go on that.
Infield was in. if you are gonna have someone on & 2 outs, better to have Granderson at 3rd than Chavez a 1st.
But why were they in? Its the second inning.
Slow high chopper, I’d rather be aggressive and make them make a play. He may have been thrown out, but he at least had a chance, and given the RISP struggles, I would have liked to see them take the chance with one out.
I’ve given up hope of the RISPFAIL ever correcting itself. Now when there are runners on base I just cross my fingers and wait for a home run.
Nice at bat Chavez, it’s like A-Rod never got hurt.
Of course while Seattle was playing in for some stupid reason, Chavez hit a weak ball.
Baseball Gods hating the Yankees right now.
Why the hell were they playing in in the second inning? And of course it works
because Seattle averages 2 runs a game. this literally might be all they get.
It still goes against all baseball logic.
Yeah except it worked…
Such is the way with the Yankees right now.
this lineup is pathetic.
mariners lineup putting them to shame
OT, but didn’t see it on here: Just saw Phillies resigned Cole Hamels to second biggest pitching contract in history: 6 years, $144 million.
The Baseball gods have been piling on the Yankees of late.
Nunez won’t be called up, thank Mo.
Just got to tip your hat to the pitcher…
No. Just got to ask the Baseball gods what the Yankees did to upset them.
Apparently they asked a ground out, a feeble Chavez AB, and for a Jones strikeout.
Apparently that’s just bad luck?
No the fact that the Mariners did something that goes against all of baseball logic and it worked for them.
It doesn’t go against baseball logic to try to prevent runs when your team is horrible offensively and playing in a severe pitcher’s park.
But still… ITS THE SECOND INNING.
But still … ITS THE MARINERS …. IN SAFECO.
Risk – runner on first, bottom of the order coming up.
Reward – prevent the run.
It entirely makes sense, even more so for the Mariners.
what a surprise, a blown scoring chance.. Man, it just dosen’t end..
Bigger surprise. Andruw Jones strikes out again
I am getting so sick of their inability to get the runner in from third with less than 2 outs. Makes for some low scoring game
wow, I think Andruw blew his whole nut in Fenway a few weeks ago, hes looked HORRIBLE since that series
what pitch did he face? fastball or breaking abll
RISPFail prevails. Back to nova. Hope watching him isn’t excruciating as last inning
yup. didn’t expect any more than that. Hisashi Hernandez on the mound.
Andruw Jones is now the spokesman for Special K cereal brands.
Get Scott Hairston please.
Scott Hairston sucks vs. RHP.
So in the second inning, the Mariners do something that is completely against baseball logic and it works. Such is the way with the Yankees right now.
Playing according to your team and ballpark is completely against baseball logic?
They had a 1 run lead in the second inning. SECOND INNING! They had just roughed up Nova for two runs. Why the hell would they play the infield in?
“Roughed up Nova”
2 singles (one a broken bat) and 2 walks… yeah they were crushing him.
30 pitches in the first inning.
That’s not roughing him up. That’s Nova being a bit wild. Not something they can rely on continuing.
You keep saying against baseball logic.
With their offense and their record, that’s a smart play and a good risk to take… it’s not like it was 2nd and 3rd where if a ball gets through it’s a few runs, plus you have the bottom of the order coming up.
In the second inning? If its the 5th or 6th, I could understand that.
Not the second inning.
Again:
- Weak M’s offense
- Park that suppresses offense
- Bottom of the order coming up
- Man on 3rd (not 2nd and 3rd or even 1st and 3rd)
- Already one out
A single getting through (which is the risk of bringing the infield in) leaves them in a guy on 1st 1 out “jam” with the bottom of the order due up… that’s a pretty good tradeoff/risk for the potential to cutoff a run.
the yankees just flat out blow right now. i hope they leave it on the west coast
Cold streaks happen. They’ll work their way out of it. Just get Swish back and find a viable A-Rod replacement.
Right, they weren’t gonna play ~.700 baseball forever.
espn or yahoo for gamecast….which is better?
Just like after Mo got hurt – when a player like A-Rod gets hurt it effects everyone – that is where Jeter is so good. Whenever – well, most of the time – when something makes the guys tense Jeter has come through which loosens things up.
1 up & in 4 Nova
I was at the series for all 4 games in KC when Mo got hurt and I watched it happen live…the team’s batting practice session and actions immediately became…more draining? I’m not sure how to put it but they looked tired and devastated. When you add in the trip to the West Coast and all of the injuries I think they need to just get home and have a day off. They’re still in a good position.
On a side note I wonder the next time I big time stud FA pitcher in his prime will actually reach FA?
If only Matsui played 3rd base. Damn.
If only Matsui can still hit, which he can’t.
True…but those pinstripes work wonders sometimes.
“They work wonders”, yet below your’re complaining about the RISP failure.
We all get frustrated. This is a place to vent. Thanks for following my posts.
One cannot have more swag than Robinson Cano
I just got home from work, checked the box score and not to my surprise…not one hit Mariner.
Nova was having enough problems in the 1st inning without putting men on intentionally
there is the sequence of Martin, Ichiro and Jeter coming up… yuck!
Martin does not bother to steal 2n? WTF?
See he doens’t strike out. Avoids the DP.
Martin would be standing on 3B instead.
Brothers from another mother… Coney just knows what to say
And hit or not, at least Ichiro makes contact and moves the guy over. I’ll take it.
That’s what I’m talking about. First in the AL in AB/K
Outs aren’t good for offense.
Outs make scoring runs more difficult.
he is lefty so it is easy to do that.
Tim Kurkjen: Ichiro has the most hits of any japenese born player off of a japenese born pitcher when it is the third wednesday of the month at an away ballpark when the moon is not in the sky sun in 90 degree angle with the 2nd baseman born in the 80′s and the owner of his team is fully healthy.
even when they get a hit with risp, they can’t score or move a runner
last three hits w risp, have not scored a run
If, as Kenny said, Montero has a brother named Jesus in the Cardinal Org. – check out the picture –
And what’s up w/Robbie — he’s not hitting well – not like he can.
Are you insinuating that if a player ever has a brief old streak, something must be wrong with him?
Might want to watch a little more. Cano has been absolutely torrid, it’s logical that a cold spell will balance it out.
Coney is really funny.
And I just want to say as much as I love PTI they have no clue what Alex means to the Yanks-
Luke Hochevar gets ejected for plunking Trout in the arm – how many Yankees have been “plunked” –
This is infuriating
What’s the “on-field delay” gameday is telling me about?
God help us
Basically if Cano hits well the Yanks win, if he doesnt they lose.
At least this game doesn’t have the makings to be frustrating, or anything…
At least we’re only 1-5 so far with RISP.
Great, we get calls we want and still can’t get any love from the gods of a mistake.
this lineup is trash, only person to blame is cashman
yep, Cashman needs to stop injuring his players
First Gardner, then Swisher, then ARod.
He needs to be fired before he injures anybody else.
I blame you, personally.
ahahahaha
When did “I swing at every pitch” Robbie show back up?? 6 pitches three outs…
Similar to “Grounder to first base” Raul…
DP.
Like clockwork.
Unbelievable… the Mariners were playing for the DP in that situation?
Defies all baseball logic and it works… how unlucky can the Yankees get.
All you can do is laugh, right?
Yup. It’s either that or you cry and I aint crying for them Yanks
Martin, Ichiro and Jeter sequence is clearly bad. What a comedic event.
2 of 3 got on base.
I’m really not sure why we bother.
I ponder that myself as well.
Martin walked to start the inning but he did not steal to 2b. Ichiro merely moved Martin to 2b. One out. Jeter got infield hit, which could be an out on good day, moving Martin. Cano closed the innings without scoring a mere run.
That is not good hitting sequence situation.
What else do you want? Give me the lineup you’d like. Not that I like this lineup, but I’d have Martin and Ichiro 8-9 with Jeter leadoff, which is essentially the same thing.
Nothing I can do about it.
I’m starting to think that the Yanks should seriously consider treating singles, doubles, or triples as outs. Not like they’ll come in to score. Only count the home runs. It will make the game go quicker and that stupid RISPFail will be non existent.
I thought the last few weeks the team has actually had a great avg with RISP. Where can I get those numbers?
Last 27 games: 63/211 .298 (not including today)
But last 5 games: 9/42 .214 (not including today)
Thanks! There you go, and that .298 includes this 5 game cold streak, so it was well over .300+ for 3 weeks. Just random fluctuation.
Counting today, 10/49 in the last six games. .204.
Throwing Jesus Montero a slider is like throwing acid in his face
LOL!!
Jaso must be a legit hitter for Mariners… wtf?
Nova, what the?
Hell?
Jason Giambi and Ken Phelps.
Tony Clark and Doug Mankieweicz?
I don’t know the question or the answer, but it’s fun to think rando slugging first basemen/DH types.
Now Mlb.Tv is going to start lagging awesome
Slowly but surely, Granderson has really become a TTO hitter.
Yeah, and it’s become increasingly intolerable to watch. Between he and Jones there’ve been enough strikeouts to feed all of Ethiopia.
Hope the real Yankees return for this weekends series in Boston. This west coast trip has made the team look pedestrian.
The only saving grace here is the Mariners’ offensive ineptitude, so all we need to do is run into one and suddenly it’s tied… Other than that this is ridiculous. Ibañez looked pathetic that whole at bat.
please get rid of ibanez, he provides nothing
K-urtis granderson
They really need another bat.
Up to Andruw Jones to tie this up with risp and 2out.. Come on jones!
Something’s got to give
Apparently not.
I’m off to the gym. I need to sweat out all this RISPFAIL
make the pitcher work a little Andruw.
god, watching andruw jones in LF day after day would not be good.. This guy is OK when u spot start him and PH him.. When u see him to often, the 225ba with tons of K’s really sticks out..lol Ibanez, Granderson, and jones, seem to K to much.. Frustrating…
Granderson our all-star CF usually disappears after the 3rd inning after he gets his one hit.
I think Yankees should start to reset the thresold next year not 2014.
What are you even talking about? They have already started, the threshold doesn’t rise to $189M until 2014. This is completely illogical.
178m for 2013.
Please oh mighty yooboo, tell us how exactly you could do this.
No one should be making decisions for Yankees ownership, especially not you. You’re in no position to be saying what they should do without a very plausible plan. Theoretically you could decline both Cano and Granderson’s options, pray Soriano opts out, not sign Mariano, not sign any pitchers, and abandon Swisher… But anyone who even suggested that would be fired and shot off into space to save the rest of mankind from being infected with stupidity.
I had roster for 2013 and 2014. It is possible. However, Only Sabathia is making more than 10m for 2 or 3 years. It wont happen.
Soriano out and Rivera in. 15m combo.
I give the maximum of 5mm for off bench power.
Traded for Headley and settled the contract to keep him away from 10m until 2016. It wont happen too.
Anyways, you don’t get my drift. 178mm for 2013 means Yankees begin to rebuild all over again. And that is a joke.
Ah.. Granderson and Cano are affordable for 2013.
I had Granderson at maximum of 19mm and Cano at 25mm for 14 and beyond. Due to AJ Burnett’s 8.5mm debt for 2014, Granderson’ 5mm and Cano’s 8mm will deter after their contracts are expired.
In real life, Granderson could take no more than 17mm and Cano could take no more than 22mm annually so extra 5mm can cover SP’s bolstering money or expensive SS to back Jeter up for one season.
>RISP with two outs, down by 1
>I go get a shower.
No faith right now.
Ah, Joe Pepitone.
Designer of Central Park for Civil War training. Never forget.
4th nova walk.. To many! Leadoff walk to boot.. ugh! Can we just win 2games on this freaking trip!
I don’t really see how we can keep winning running Ibañez, Jones, Chavez, and Martin/Stewart all in one lineup. Seriously.
It’s hard to disagree. I’ll keep beating the Headley drum until someone else acquires him.
GOd, stop getting into these dangerous counts, nova!
75 pitches already for Nova and 4th inning is not even finished. damn
Balking Bob at it again…
Kawasaki one-man!
Kawasaki one-man!
Kawasaki one-man bannnnnd!
Let the good times rollllllll
Jam*
Ichiro goes yard at this AB.
Martin’s had some good AB’s today… he’s one of the few hitters not swinging at crap out of the zone and waiting for a strike.
Fuck you safeco canyon
Damn, Tampa Bay cut Matsui? Kinda sad. Any reason we might want him? Think he’d go to AAA for a bit and see if Jones pulls a love handle?
Also WTF with Ripken’s Mom? I bet there’s gonna be some crazy scandal with Billy Ripken, a Fargo-esque scam and a some pine tar.
Has anyone else noticed that Ichiro wears a different style of hat? It’s like the batting practice hats with the regular Yankees hat color blocking. It’s definitely not a regular New Era 59FIFTY Yankees hat.
Ichiro batting .300, best trade ever Cashman GM of the year.
Who are you calling short sighted?
Wow, if what Sterling and Waldman are saying is true about Buhner’s comments regarding Ichiro… total dick.
Good thing Montero sucks
Montero kick to the nuts.
This is a nightmare.
Nothing wrong with Montero’s shoulder.
Wow good throw by Montero. I tip my hat.
Nice to at least have a guy running occasionally…
Yoenis Cespedes + Michael Saunders = Championship.
Get on it, Cash.
Fallacy of the pre-determined base hit
Jesus not a catcher
-cashman
Considering Miguel Olivo has caught more often than Montero this season, it seems as though Seattle has some concerns as well.
And most scouting reports we saw of him in the minors expressed similar concerns.
that is excellent explanation.
what a game.
the catcher for the marinres looks pretty good to me
Double here for Cano.
lol at this offense
Too bad they won’t score here.
Well this looks like a good time to go to the bathroom.
Robbie thompson has no balls wtf
For the TV viewers: how’s Nova looked since the first inning?
Poor command.
Stuff looks decent (or maybe it’s the M’s offense) but he is missing his spots frequently
Just more RISPFAIL waiting excitedly in the wings
should thompson have sent jeter? im listening, not watching
No, but if he would’ve run a bit harder I think he could’ve made it. Just didn’t look like Wells would have as much trouble as he did off the bat
Yankees have been cursed with alot of bad luck on this trip combined with their mediocre stats with RISP.
Awesome
So predictable.
Ahhhhhhhhh well that was a relieving bathroom trip.
Hey guys did I miss anything?
It unbelievable how things change in a week. Its why I hate this game. At least in football, there are patterns to follow.
If you hate the game of baseball, why do you devote so much energy into being a frequent commenter on a Yankees site?
I for one love the unpredictability of baseball. Some cool moments happen in the Yankees favor too.
Because I want to feel like an f***ing winner. And its logical to say that I have no part in what happens there. But they are still my horse in the race.
They’re still in first place. Relax man.
Maybe you don’t get it. It is natural for baseball fans to whine shit.
95 pitches in five innings.
And yet plenty of missed chances.
3 hits, no runs
Just give me gun and I’ll kill myself right now.
Where was it that I read you speaking of hatred and anger? Oh, you said it was strictly a matter of DISLIKING. Ok, gotcha. Just laugh it off. They’re pathetic right now. It’s comical. Just laugh it off and walk away.
That’s called depression, not hate or anger. Depression.
Greg chill.
Maybe this guy should be banned from the site…? I don’t know.
Nah. He’s a good poster and fan.
Yeah, Greg’s cool. We just need to pull him back from the ledge now and again.
Whether this is sarcasm or not, it’s comments like that which make my “pro-civilian gun ownership” stance look flimsy.
Its sarcasm mixed with a little depression.
Forget about Phelps replacing Freddy. He should replace Nova with the way he’s been pitching lately. Nova has no command. He used to get groundball after groundball.
Um… Yeah no. Freddy’s been much worse no matter how you look at it.
Nova’s not going anywhere.
BTW, his GB rate today is 50%.
Stop it you’re ruining his narrative.
this is the type of game that makes u furious.. More chances, but this time against a young inexpierenced kid, and tons of lefties in our lineup, and we can’t hit a freaking lick.. Not even a lick! I mean, jesus..
he´s 31 yrs old
And Nova hasn’t allowed a hit since the first, yet we’re somehow losing.
walk too many hitters hurt.
Yes I know how this game works. Just saying its frustrating that with the exception of the 1st inning Nova has seriously outpitched Iwakuma.
Just pretty to watch
Talk about a biased text poll…
perez: now we’re talking.
Oliver Perez.
Hope he looks like Sir Walks-A-Lot today.
Mariners use lefty in 5th inning? The concern about Ibanez and Chavez will be no longer presented in late game.
They do have another lefty.
We have 6 hits, but 4 singles. We have become a singles hitting team in these big ballparks. We are not a team that can string hits together.
The slash line prior to Chavez is .286/.375/.476.
The underlying offense isn’t the issue, the hitting with RISP is. Nothing wrong with 4 singles, a double, a home run, and 3 walks.
But the double came with 2 outs. Where are the leadoff doubles and triples?
You don’t get leadoff doubles and triples with Ichiro leading off.
In innings, not in games.
Nova could have one more inning to grit out but he will face all hitters who walk off him. Umm.
Another ball out in most parks
This is incredible. In 5 innings we have 6 hits, 3 walks, 1 stolen base, 1 HR and 1 2B and that somehow equals 1 run. This is a fucking clinic. CS before the hits in an inning with 3 hits and a double but no runs. Not getting runners in from 3rd with less than 2 outs. Inning ending double plays. BABIP bad luck….. Even in that stretch of great baseball we played we never really went out and started scoring like 7-10 runs every few nights….very few blowouts. Guess that’s what happens with a station to station offense that has RISPFAIL issues, injuries and only has 8 hitters a night at best.
the ten game streak of 5+ runs was pretty good, no?
Sterling is so fraking annoying! I am so sick and tired or the idiot faking people out on everything.. Hes so worried about his stupid tradefmark calls, that he dosen’t want to miss one, and anything hit hard, is his fmous call, no matter how weak the drive..
I’m to the point, where i don’t even get excited when i here him get excited.. Hes a idiot!
Ibañez has had some of the worst swings I’ve ever seen today…
Warning track power.
Well, that’s lovely.
Nice job Sterling. Two bad calls in a row where he thought it was gone and it wasn’t. Not back to back, or belly to belly.
I miss Jim Kaat.
We’ve become a singles and homer team. Where are all the doubles and triples? Where are the balls into the gaps? My goodness.
Who are Corban Joseph and David Adams?
Sterling thought he was at Yankee stadium those last two calls
sterling goes right into faking out with call on ibanez drive, right after granderson’s..lol I’m done! I’m completely done getting faked out by his calls! I mean it! Does the guy have any baseball instincts at all? How many games has this guy watched? Should have at least a clue.. Dude seems to not know the diffrence between warning track fly ball, or legit chance bomb..
How the yanks have gotten this pathetically dominated by seattle pitchering is beyond me…
We could conceivably lose 6 games by a combined 7 runs on this trip.
Yeah, kinda poor luck there.
Eh, more like bad offense, not like the team has really raked any game and just missed out
The one problem I have is that this was the part of the schedule where they were supposed to fill up the win on. Now they have to go back to New York to play a desperate Red Sox team.
Weren’t you just saying a few days ago that the A’s would be tough and reminding folks every 10 minutes with an “I told you so”?
And that Felix is an expected loss?
Now you are saying this is the soft schedule that they should have been racking up wins on?
I said they be tough. I didn’t expect them to sweep. I thought the Yanks would split with the A’s and take 2 of 3 from the M’s.
A 4-3 road trip.
So going 4-3 is “racking up wins”?
Sorry meant to say “filling up the win on” (racking up wins was the phrase I used… didn’t mean to misquote you)
shhhh! no one was supposed to remember that
Walk again… damn it, Nova.
How many times does Nova throw change?
3 years ago it would be a big differance if AROD wasn’t in this lineup. Now it’s not a big deal.AROD and Jeter offense the past couple of years doesn’t matter anyomre. As long a Tex and Cano are racking who cares.
When the alternatives are worse than ARod or Jeter, it matters a lot.
+1
The other problem is the replacement is likely a platoon, which shortens the bench and exposes you to issues like last inning where you can’t really start pinch hitting for guys in the 6th inning (as you will then be on the short end of the platoon in the 8th or 9th)
The platoon thing is great… when done in selective areas. The Yankees now have effectively a platoon at 3 positions (LF, DH, 3rd) and half there bullpen are specialists. It leaves minimal roster/bullpen flexibility.
*their* bullpen
Yeah, I think the platoon thing can definitely prove to be a relatively big problem. I’d really love for them to add an above average everyday bat that can handle both lefties and righties. 3B, OF, or DH could all work.
Throw fucking strikes!!!!!
You know things are bad when you are playing a horrible team like Seattle and Sterling says that giving up a 3 run creating a 2 run deficit something the Yankees cannot afford.
Yikes!
Enough jokes about going to the bathroom and getting a shower every time we have RISP, I’m actually taking a long shower and seeing if anything’s changed when I’m out… Bye people, fun being slightly suicidal with you all today.
Wow. 5 and fly, Ivan? Really?
This is a disgrace. 1-6 roadtrip,Boston fell apart in 2011,now it will be the Yanks in 2012.
Holy cliff jumper.
A bad week and you give up already.
Wow.
1 run game with 3 innings to go is not over!
The cameraman is not very good today.
So I wonder how long Phelps pitches in this game? Especially if it is tied or down by a run…
until a lefty comes up for the Mariners
Apparently not…
God has done everything to keep me off the boards the last 48 hours. TV people, how did Nova actually look? I don’t trust Suzyn and John at all.
2 singles (one was a broken bat single), 6 walks… the stat line says it all.
Fastball command was really poor – he had good velocity and they weren’t squaring up the ball at all (I think he even hit 97 in the 1st). Breaking ball (slider and curve) were pretty good but he was occasionally missing spots with it (not nearly as much as the fastball) – he did seem to be able to throw them for strikes though.
Erratic. Just not throwing strikes. If he was facing most other teams in most other parks he would have paid dearly for the few strikes he did throw. This team he faced is not good.
C’mon jones that ball was never gonna be in the strikezone
This is getting more and more putrid with each swinging K.
1 win over 6 games. Not good. Day off better help.
Thank you Martin for proving someone could look worse than jones
Girardi’s recurrent “had went” is like farting on TV
this is one of the most pathetic offensive performances i’ve seen all yr long.. Ibanez, Jones, Gran derson just K and d, they K like its going out of stK and K… God they k like its going outta style…
A lot of bad ABs today. But a lot of bad luck too. A bunch of balls have been smoked that ended up getting caught or going foul. I still think they’re going to pull this out.
Nice to see the 2012 Yankees do their best 2011 Red Sox impersonation.
What type of response are you anticipating for this comment?
That’s two different commenters making that comparison in this thread.
Not surprised. Any skid was bound to make people think like that, smart or not.
While I like getting Phelps in the game… there are 4 more lefties coming up.
Have to wonder if he should have just stuck with Rapada and walked Wells with 2 out.
I’ve heard Dave Sims broadcast for a while now. He sounds like such a weenie white dude. Imagine my surprise.
Fyi: He’s a weenie black dude.
David Phelps has been great.
the funny part is last week, there was people sayuing “we should take it easy” from here oun out..etc A week later, we lose probably 6of7 unless we come back and batltimore has done well, and its a race agaain..lol 80gameas to go and people talking about resting guys and what not..LOL
Come on yanks, at least win this one! Dang!
One freaking run! Lets start with that yanks! Jeez! Oh my, they hit jeter! Come on!!!!
Assholes.
But hey, score some runs to atone for that.
Seriously with this shit. You have to hit one of theirs. Girardi is a giant vagina like Torre.
this is getting ridiculous
Wow. Don’t see that often. Jeter actually paused like he wanted pitchers in his dugout to take notice.
2 singles can’t be enough for the Mariners to win this game can it?
After a HR and 5 singles yesterday it’s hard to imagine dropping 2 games where your pitching gives up 8 hits in 2 games
And of those 7 singles, 2 were check swing infield hits and 2 were broken bat hits – so they’ve basically had 1 HR and 3 clean singles over the last 2 games?
Suyzn is pissed! “these are supposed to be ML pitchers, enough of this seattle”, she says..lol I agree.. At least we got tying run on base.. Cano must get on somehow.. He is due.. been struggling past 5games or so.l. I have a feeling he does something good here.. I’m gonna say double down the line…
Even the Mariner broadcasters are wondering if the Yankees should retaliate… if they are saying that, I think it’s time to do something.
cano rips a base hit..
Smoked.
Don’t waste this opportunity.
Let’s take a poll regarding Phelps:
A. he’s pitching way over his head, trade him this week while value might be high.
B. I think he’s truly for real. Keep him.
C. Somewhere in between, if a trade comes around where we can upgrade at either 3rd, OF, or C do it.
C. Somewhere in between. Depends what they are getting back.
I’ll go for in between as well.
I think he can be a legit starter for the Yankees at the back of the rotation down the line. Unless they are in a situation where they have a bunch of 4/5 types after CC (i.e. one or two of the Nova/Banuelos/Pineda group emerge as at least mid rotation type starters)
He should not be traded for a rental.
C. Somewhere in between Marvolo and Need Pitching
Like Tex hitting righty.
It’s comical how many Yankee RISP hits don’t score runs.
base hit by tex! Bases loaded, oh no!!!!! Litteraly, oh no!!!
Hahah.
Couldn’t score due to the fact it was catchable. Third time in two games the Yankees could score on a hit with RISP.
Well, bases loaded. Can’t blow this, can they?
For Christ’s sake, the Mariner ‘s broadcasters are saying that the Yankees will have to retaliate b/c the young Mariner pitchers don’t know “how” to pitch inside, regardless of intent.
Any retaliation should be in the Stadium, with the crowd roaring approval.
By Joba
OK, most creative way to eff this up… Go!
they can’t possibly mess this inning up can they?
First out puts them in perfect position to
Why ask?
That was worthless.
Granderson gets started off with a breaking ball strike, way to often.. Come on Grandy! Just hit the freaking ball, please!!!
Granderson, u freaking dink! Jesus christ!!!! PH for these lefties! My GOD!!!!! Don’t let this fool ibanez hit!d, there Pinch hitting for Ibanez..
Nix will get this done!
Got it done, he did!!! He freaking destroyed that pitch!!!
I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen a Yankee team never be able to take more than a base at a time than I’ve seen of late.
I’m not greedy, just a 2 run single please.
I’m gonna puke if we don’t score here.. This is unaceptable in some mayny diffrent ways. There isn’t words out there to express my anger if we don’t score here..
Even the foul balls aren’t going the Yankees way right now.
Couldn’t even get the luck of a flyout to tie it
Or maybe we did…
The way things have been going, I didn’t count on what followed. This was abot the first break the Yanks have had on this whole trip
Was anyone else hoping that was out and a sac fly?
Nix!!! I told ya he’d do it!!! I freaking told ya!!!
thank fucking christ for Nix. who would have thought that PHing for Ibanez against a lefty would work?
And Nix saves the goddamn day!
Jason Nix is BATMAN!!!!!
Hell Yes Nix!!
Maybe Joe will PH for Ibanez more often now.
Yay Laynce I mean Jayson Nix!
Finally — a piece of luck went their way
A double over the outfielder’s heads and into the gap isn’t a “piece of luck.”
I think he meant the ball that went foul.
Yes, I did.
Plus, there’ve been a number of balls smoked earlier today that found their way into fielders’ gloves (or, as with Cano’s double, were blocked to prevent the run from scoring). The way this trip has gone, I half-expected the center-fielder to make a miracle catch on it.
Everything is luck to a certain extent, unless you think hard contact results in a hit 100% of the time.
While Martin looked foolish on the strikeout, he’s had 3 good AB’s today… the walk, the hard lineout to LF, and that last AB. Was laying off pitches out of the zone and making some good contact.
(or am I looking too hard to find something positive?)
oops.
Anything that can be even remotely construed as signs of life from Martin is a good thing.
Now THAT’S revenge!
And it’s going to make plunking Jaso even sweeter!
It’s almost like hitting with RISP is a random stat that fluctuates and not a skill that this team somehow lacks.
Good job Nix.
You’re crazy. Up until that at-bat the Yankees lacked the skills to get a hit that they can get with the bases empty, with men on.
Bingo!
Jayson Nix, True Yankee (TM) =P
Holy Crap!
I was half expecting Cano to pass Jeter on the way to home to botch things up
So question for the YES viewers… was the “He’s a baseball player” used?
Kay isn’t in the booth
Praise the lord. A RISP hit.
“Just when I thought I was out…
they pull me back in!”
Nice.
Naturally, a back-up bench player that rarely ever plays gets the one clutch hit they’ve been waiting for this entire road trip
now that Wise is gone, Jayson Nix’s PH double turned the 2nd half of the season around
Let’s hope so
He’s going to go to Robertson, and obviously that’s fine. But I wouldn’t be pissed if he stayed with Phelps in the 8th.
Now bring in Qualls.
It’s about that time. It isn’t a true Yankee game unless Girardi puts it on the line.
Grr…no Qualls! They need to DFA him.
They need to bench Jones for an extended period of time. He’s been atrocious.
Running out of options behind him. Do you prefer Ibanez against lefties?
I want the Fuckin’ Dome!!!
Or Musty, Branyan, Cust, Dickerson . . . I’ll take any of them over Andruw right now.
Luckily the Yankees aren’t stupid enough to base their decisions on a road trip.
But am I stupid enough? Are you? Or are we all too dumb for our own good? That’s the real question, dear Snarksalot.
Ix-nay on the oss-lay.
Seattle sniper got Kelley
Came back just in time for the double. Beautiful timing.
Damn, let’s hope Mrs. Jones comes through again.
Nix rocks. told ya.
10ribbys in 21at bats for Nix.. Sweet!
Man when Martin is smoking it, it doesn’t go well for him.
FINALLY RUSSELL HIT
The corpse of Russell Martin comes through.
Did Russ Martin take a lot of pitches in that game? It is nice and I wish he can produce off bat.
Never mind, loading sucks.
It’s such a refreshing change of pace when one of the C’s is productive.
Almost to that point where someone can’t get plunked Today
Go yard, Choo-zuki!
So we can plunks someone next inning.
What’s the Yankees’ avg with RISP today?
.308
Martin and Nix…
Who would’ve thought it…
Baseball is funny.. Now were getting multiple hits with RISP in the same inning???lo And its Nix and Martin outta all people? Gotta love it!!! baseball is a great game..
Shouldn’t really be surprising. When you have a 1 in 4 chance of something happening, sometimes it doesn’t happen 10 straight times, and sometimes it happens twice or three times in a row. Try flipping two coins a bunch of times in a row and see how often it comes up with 2 heads.
A hit from Russell and a Yankee ran the bases well and scored from second on a single. It’s like the universe is slowly restoring to order.
Am I the only person who heard Cone drop the F-Bomb?
YES heard it too. Imagine coney will get chewed out after the game
What was the context?
Robertson and Soriano to finish off. I Call it.
Out on a limb, today, huh?
For all we know, in yoobooland Qualls is the setup man and Wade is the closer. Might still have Buddy Carlyle too.
Bold call right here….
Off topic but what do folks think of the Hanley Ramirez trade?
I realize the Dodgers are eating all of the money, but Eovoldi (spelling?) doesn’t seem like a lot to give up.
Good for the Marlins to unload that contract for the next few years. Getting a cost controlled decent starter is gravy for them. Still looks bad to the fans though.
Freddie Gonzalez has the last laugh.
Dodgers now have money. Not much to give up for both Ramirez and Choate.
I haven’t really examined it, but knowing the Marlins they got the shit end of the stick.
The Marlin’s dumped a bad $35+M contract on the Dodgers…hardly the shit end of the stick.
Absolutely agree. Besides, with Reyes at SS, Hanley’s marginal value for them was diminished.
A good hitting SS has more value then they got. and for icing n the cake they threw in a LOOGY? Seems like they were desperate to move him more than anything.
I think Miami has been dying to get rid of him since they signed Reyes. He has been a malcontent on that team for a hot minute, and they would have sold him for less.
That said, the Miami FO is as incompetent as they come, so there’s that…
Time to slam the door.
Six outs, get the W, and get the hell back to the east coast.
Montero runs like a girl
An extremely bored girl… Yeah, I said it
A girl that spent the night with Jeter.
Two comments:
1. Who can run that fast carrying a gift basket?
2. I would actually imagine that he runs more like Steve Phillips’ mistress….
http://bumpshack.com/wp-conten.....photos.jpg
Amirite?
To be fair to Russell, he would be the 5th best hitter on the Mariners,
Right between Ackley and Montero.
Not even joking, he would bat cleanup in Seattle. They are that bad.
After all, who else in that lineup has that kind of power?
So basically there is no reason for a right handed pitcher to throw a fastball or a strike to Montero… ever!
Seems like he will chase anything with a wrinkle on it either down or outside. Unless you fall way behind, seems pointless to throw him anything straight or in the zone.
He better learn to catch proficiently, because his bat so far doesn’t profile too well for a DH.
He can mash lefties though…
I wonder if pitch recognition (specifically the curve/slider from a righty) is a fatal flaw that will limit him against righties or if it’s a matter of getting experience seeing major league quality breaking balls.
It’s a Pacific Northwest thing. It’s where batting talent goes to die…
- A. Beltre
Hopefully the Yankees can use that to their advantage after the 2013 season. “Hey, Jack (who will probably be fired by then), this is Cash. So Montero hasn’t quite worked out there. These things happen with prospects. So we have the need for a righthanded pinch-hitter off the bench. Umm, this guy Betances we have, he finished up 2013 in low A ball for us. Might be worth a lottery ticket for you guys. What you say? Betances for Montero?”
Surprised when people mention potential candidates to upgrade at catcher John Jaso isn’t brought up. The guy has a 390+OBP.
He’s been mentioned. He’s also unlikely to be traded. Mariners are desperate for offense. It’s unlikely they’d trade one of their best hitters, with 3+ years of team control left, unless the offer was completely overwhelming.
Would like to see the Yankees tack on a run or two so….
MFIKY can throw a little chin music in the 9th and quash the HBP thing in Seattle.
ahh.. Jeter is not perfect.. boo.
via mlbtr, via Heyman, the Brewers are going into fire sale mode and Aramis Ramirez might be available, as well as Corey Hart and George Kottaras…I personally think the Yankees should be kicking the tires on all three.
What would they do with Hart? Go with 3 IF and play beer league short outfielder?
Kottaras is only one that makes sense to Yanks.
It’s true we already have the same guy in Andruw Jones, but Hart can also hit righties a little bit.
Upgrade over Ibanez.
He can DH, or Swish DH, then he replaces Swish in RF next season.
Aramis has a contract that goes on and on.
come on Soriano! Going for number 26 in the save dept…
Pad those stats! Pad those stats!
Hit Wells!
Cross one day with Alex Rodriguez off the calendar.
Without Al
Untuck
2-5 trip, still have a sizable lead in the division…things could be worse.
Yeah, like not having a viable 3B, C, or DH
Um, that’s part of the CURRENT situation. By “it could be worse”, that would imply something WORSE than the current situation.
Sorry, but your trolling was a major failure.
Starks the game = Derek Jeter? What, is Jayson Nix some sort of asshole or something?
So who are we rooting for tonight in Bal-Tb and Bos-Tex?
I fucking can’t believe that Yankees actually won this game.
Just as a general tip, avoid the use of trivial cursing… Not that you’ve had a consistent problem but it’s probably in your best interest.
I’m sure neither you nor anyone else will see this, but I must say that after a 4 game sweep by Oakland (all one run losses) and 5 plunked batters in 2 days (there may have been more; I only saw snippets of today’s game and haven’t looked at the box score yet) including one HBP that broke Alex Rodriguez’ hand, saying “I fucking can’t believe the Yankees won this game” falls well within the “judicious use” of profanity allowed by the commenting guidelines.
get back from picking up my son to see a surprise win! nice onya nix. now get the hell outta there yankees. eesh.
Why is everyone so interested in Chase Headley? I just checked out his numbers and, while decent, I’m certainly not impressed. Then again, I probably shouldn’t be. There isn’t much out there that can replace ARod.
His numbers are very similar, if not slightly better than, ARod’s, and he has a massive Home/Road split. I think most expect him to be even better if he left spacious Petco Park.
Look at his road numbers.
Adrian Gonzalez is a black sheep.
Adrian Gonzalez also had shoulder surgery. (and he was an MVP candidate last year)
Look at his numbers away from yellowstone national…I mean Petco…and you can see he’s probably the best available non-pitcher on the market.
Nix definitely just called Meredith “Michelle.”
