Jeter, Cano, and Granderson named starters for All-Star Game

SS Derek Jeter, 2B Robinson Cano, and OF Curtis Granderson will all start in the All-Star Game later this month after winning the fan voting at their respective positions. Other AL starters include C Mike Napoli, 1B Prince Fielder, 3B Adrian Beltre, OF Josh Hamilton, OF Jose Bautista, and DH David Ortiz. No word on the reserves yet, but I’m not sure any other Yankees will be selected for the game.

NL starters include C Buster Posey, 1B Joey Votto, 2B Dan Uggla, SS Rafael Furcal, 3B Pablo Sandoval, OF Matt Kemp, OF Carlos Beltan, and former Yankee OF Melky Cabrera.

Update: CC Sabathia has been selected to the pitching staff, but he obviously won’t participate in the game given his injury. It would have been neat if Hiroki Kuroda was named his replacement, but the spot went to C.J. Wilson instead. Here are the full rosters and the Final Vote ballot.

    Melky won the NL vote!!

    • BK2ATL

      I guess he sucks.

So happy for the kid. He’s putting it together. Interesting that he got more votes than Braun, who will still get in since Kemp is hurt. Not sure if it’s more a play on Melkman’s popularity, or some people backing off of Braun after how last season ended in scandal.

    lol Jeter winning the vote.

    • BK2ATL

He got off to a great start, and apparently that stuck in many voters’ minds. Then there’s that most popular MLB player thing, and universal respect.

Still don’t know if Andrus or any other SS had a legitimate shot at it.

      • OMG! Bagels!

Jeter will be on the AS team for as long as he’s playing. While most of the votes go to those who deserve it and DJ has deserved it most years, he mainly gets it because he’s Jeter, which is fine with me.

Wow David Wright is not starting at 3rd and Posey starting at catcher. Just wrong.

    • Pat D

Shocked that Sandoval won the voting. Should’ve been Ruiz at catcher, but I’m glad it’s not Molina for once.

  • Endlessmike

Yadier Molina is the best catcher in the game and Posey is picked infront of him thats sucks. Also Napoli isn’t a full starting catcher. These all-stars are popularity contests.

    • Pat D

      Well, duh.

    • Bo Knows

Posey is no slouch himself, his numbers match up very well with Yadier. Can’t really go wrong with either

      • YanksFanInBeantown

Actually, you’ve gone wrong if you’ve picked either.

Posey’s numbers stack up to Yadier’s well enough, but neither of them are particularly close to Ruiz.

    • BK2ATL

Molina is the best all-around catcher in MLB. He shuts down a running game pretty much singlehandedly. Offensively, his numbers stand up to any C.

Posey is pretty good, but just the popular choice. It’s like picking Bryce Harper over Ryan Braun.

Definitely a popularity contest. What sucks is that MLB is trying to enforce this charade by penalizing players who don’t want to go.

      • YanksFanInBeantown

Ruiz is a good defensive catcher too, not Yadi level perhaps, but then you have the whole “50 point higher wOBA” thing.

    • Tom

Not only is Napoli not a full time catcher, there are a bunch of catchers haveing better years. Ranger fans were definitiely stuffing the ballot this year. (Kinsler was leading Cano for a while)

In front of Napoli should have been Mauer, Pierzynski, Wieters, even Salty…

The NL starter should have been Ruiz.

A catcher not named Carlos Ruiz got All-Star votes?

Also, did Harper and Trout make it as reserves?

    • Pat D

Harper, no. No word on final man vote yet.

They’re announcing the AL reserves not, so not sure on Trout.

    • Bo Knows

Trout just named (deservedly) to the AS squad.

  • Pat D

Mike, I think they said that CJ Wilson replaced Sabathia.

  • Ron

I wonder who were the managers choices. Nice of Ron to go all homer with his scrubs.

    • Pat D

Andrus, Nathan and Harrison were all manager’s choices, based upon what they said. Not sure of the others.

      • Pat D

Also, I believe Billy Butler was, too. I’ll bet Ryan Cook was, too.

If that’s true, it means he filled the one team per requirements that he had to, and then just took his own guys.

  • Curt and Bernie

    Willingham got snubbed

    • Pat D

      I don’t think so.

  • Bavarian Yankee

McCutchen isn’t starting for the NL but Melky is? Wow, that’s sick. He got robbed big time, I don’t see how any outfielder can be ahead of McCutchen. Maybe Braun’s a bit better this year but he isn’t starting either, LOL.

Posey ahead of Ruiz and Yadier? Greinke not an all-star, Cueto not an all-star? WTF?

  • yooboo

Wow! few people in my peer kept saying that Jeter does not deserve the All Star roster. They sound like Jeter unanimously won a spot. Good Grief!

Jeter is only one with double digit appearances. Next most is 7 (Miguel Cabrera and Carlos Beltran) unless Chipper Jones (8) wins the last spot. He is an old timer already. lol.
