Small bit of news: RHP Graham Stoneburner will be used out of the bullpen moving forward. He’s coming back from a groin injury (his second of the season) and also missed a bunch of time with a neck problem last year. The bullpen always seemed to be his ultimate destination, hopefully his stuff plays up a grade or two.

Low-A Charleston (6-1 loss to Asheville)
2B Ali Castillo: 2-4, 1 R, 1 CS
CF Ben Gamel: 1-4, 1 2B, 3 K — 13 hits in his last 42 at-bats (.310)
RF Rob Refsnyder: 1-4 — this year’s fifth rounder was named the College World Series Most Outstanding Player a few weeks ago … he skipped right over the two short season leagues, obviously, a rare move for this organization … apparently the plan to convert him to a second baseman is on hold for the time being
C Tyson Blaser: 1-3, 1 RBI, 1 K, 1 PB, 1 E (throwing)
3B Dante Bichette Jr.: 1-4, 1 E (throwing)
1B Rey Nunez: 1-3
SS Cito Culver: 0-3, 1 K
DH Kelvin DeLeon: 0-3
LF Eduardo Sosa: 0-2, 1 BB, 1 K — got picked off first
RHP Bryan Mitchell: 4 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 6 K, 3 WP, 1/2 GB/FB — 50 of 86 pitches were strikes (58.1%)
LHP Dan Mahoney: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 K, 3/2 GB/FB — 18 of 27 pitches were strikes (66.7%) … picked a runner off first
RHP Mariel Checo: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 0/1 GB/FB — 19 of 37 pitches were strikes (51.3%)
LHP Fred Lewis: 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 2/0 GB/FB — 11 of 18 pitches were strikes (61.1%)

Rookie GCL Yanks (7-4 loss to GCL Pirates)
CF Mikeson Oliberto: 0-5, 1 K
LF Dan Brewer: 1-1, 2 R, 1 BB — rehabbing, so he played his three innings and got out of there
LF Nathan Mikolas: 0-3, 1 K
2B Kevin Mahoney: 1-2, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 BB — another rehabbing guy, but he played five innings
2B Jerison Lopez: 0-1, 1 BB
RF Yeicok Calderon & DH Ericson Leonora: both 0-3, 1 BB — Calderon drove in two and struck out one
1B Bubba Jones & SS Austin Aune: both both 1-4 — Jones struck out twice
3B Miguel Andrujar: 0-3, 1 K, 1 HBP, 2 E (fielding, throwing)
C Chris Breen: 1-3, 1 R, 1 HBP, 2 PB
RHP Joba Chamberlain: 1 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 2/0 GB/FB — had a little more on him earlier today
RHP Luis Niebla: 3.2 IP, 9 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 2 K, 6/2 GB/FB
RHP Melvin Mercedes: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1 HB, 2/0 GB/FB
RHP Chaz Hebert: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1/3 GB/FB

Both Triple-A Empire State and Double-A Trenton are off until Thursday for the All-Star break. Both games will be played tomorrow. LHP Juan Cedeno is representing Empire State while OF Abe Almonte, OF Cody Johnson, IF Kevin Mahoney, RHP Brett Marshall, and RHP Kelvin Perez will represent Trenton. Johnson (hamstring) is injured and will not play.

Both High-A Tampa and Short Season Staten Island had scheduled days off.

Norris also has some video of Mesa at the AA HR derby, hes got a nice swing (and damn is the HR derby rapid fire).

Also looks like Brett Marshall hit and hit one HR. Marshall for DH.

  • Murderers’ Row Boat

I never understood the second baseman deal with him. It’s not Cano will be going anywhere.

    • JohnnyC

They probably think his bat plays better as a middle infielder. He has more value — even as a trade chip — wherever his tools profile best. And he played 2nd base through high school.

    • Voice of Reason

He was a 5th round pick, and that was significantly higher than projected. I doubt replacing Robinson Cano was on their minds.

And yeah, he’s going to hit however he’ll hit, but if he does it as a 2B rather than a RF he’ll be far more valuable and far more likely to become a MLer. Common sense stuff.

      • YankeeGrunt

He displayed a fair amount of pop during the CWS, he may never be a 25 HR guy but if he’s in the 15-20 range that bat could potentially play in a corner OF slot.

        • Ted Nelson

Whatever he hits would be more valuable at 2B than RF.

I could easily be wrong, but I’d guess they want to let him sample some Low A P this season and get him some 2B work this offseason after not playing there since HS. Not put te pressure of making a thousand errors on him prematurely. Who knows, might have already decided he can’t hack it at 2B. The Yanks are usually pretty lose about sticking with good bats at premium positions, though.

This. You don’t draft to fill holes.

You do understand that teams don’t draft for positions they need to fill now. They draft the best talent on the board.

I really hope Stoneburner works out as a reliever. He’s got an 80 name tool that would play up especially well as a closer.

    • LeftyLarry

      Stoneburner = Steinbrenner

    • Brian S.

He also has an 80 tool tool. As in penis. Don’t ask me how I know this.

      • Robinson Tilapia

        Meow?

      • RetroRob

I won’t, but I’m hoping it’s not from personal contact.

  • Voice of Reason

pretty amusing that Refsnyder starts his career in Charleston after vowing to never live in South Carolina during the CWS

    • RetroRob

What was the context of that statement?

      • Midland TX

Facing the South Carolina Gamecocks in said CWS.

OK there’s a bit more to it:

“Born in South Korea and adopted by a California couple when he was 3 months old, Refsnyder said he could hear fans in Omaha making racial slurs and going so far as to issue death threats against his parents. That led him to tweet, “I will never live in South Carolina because they can’t accept Asians playing baseball.”

Refsnyder, who is affable and easy-going by nature, was surprised by the subsequent response of USC fans and quickly deleted the comment and offered an apology.

“Poor judgment on my part,” Refsnyder said in a later tweet. “I apologize, nothing but respect for South Carolina and Ray Tanner.””

So he thought USC standed for University South Carolina?

          • Brian in NH

It does…but also stands for University of Southern California
