Yankees to recall Ramiro Pena

The A-Rod Injury & Third Base
Yankees will explore third base trade market

Via Joel Sherman, infielder Ramiro Pena is en route to Seattle to take Alex Rodriguez‘s roster spot. A-Rod was placed on the DL after a pitch broke a bone in his left hand last night. The Yankees wanted some versatility, particularly someone who could play the outfield in a pinch, hence Pena with Eduardo Nunez still on the mend from his thumb injury. Sherman says Nunez is a candidate to rejoin the team soon, however.

    bummer

This makes sense as a first move to me. In the immediate term the biggest need was versatility. Swish is hurt and you need someone who can mitigate the issue of a shallow bench. It gives Cashman a day or two to call around, find out what the trade options are and how they measure up with the longer term internal options, and then make a decision on what direction they want to go.

    • jjyank

Agreed. Calling up Pena doesn’t mean that he is going to be the solution for the duration of A-Rod’s DL stint. Perhaps Cashman just needs a band-aid while he searches for a trade.

  • Gonzo

    Wasn’t he Catwoman?

  • Ralph

Oh, the one time that I hope I was wrong… and of course I’m completely correct in my ominous suspicions..

At least we don’t have to cringe about misplays with Pena.

    • JonS

Except for when he has for of them in a game.

  • Marcy

He wasn’t real good the last time they called him up – even defensively which was what kept him around before the appendectomy but I would have to guess they have their reasons.

    • Rainbow Connection (Futurely Dummies Playing w Balls and/or RI$P FTW)

their reasons were a lack of options

    • Laz

He is here because they didn’t have anytime to make any decisions. Might as well have someone on that roster spot.

  • Chad Gaudin the Friendly Ghost

    Ugh.

  • yooboo

Pena? WTF? It should be Laird. I guess Yanks will make a trade to take Pena’s spot since Pena is out of option for minor now.

Laird offers more power off bat than Pena.

    • JonS

Pena can still be sent back down this year.

  • Rich in NJ

    Pena isn’t really a MLer.

They needed a bat before A-Rod went down. They need one even more now.

  • Dan

I wonder if part of this move was also that he didn’t want to send one of their more valuable prospects (Nunez, Laird, Joseph) all the way out west just to come back the following day. My guess is that within a few games Pena will be sent back down.

  • DERP

This makes sense. I don’t think Joseph was an option since he can only hit righties and Chavez will probably pick up most of the ABs against righties. Nunez is just coming back from injury so they probably didn’t want to rush him. It might have come down to Pena or Laird and their numbers over the past two years are pretty similar.

  • Kosmo

about a week remaining to the trade deadline. It might get interesting !

  • Joe

Russo hitting .301 with .366 obp plays 5 spots but Pena gets called up? And dont say its not worth putting Russo On 40 because Pena is on it and he is worse than Russo. Pena sucks and Yankees love him dont know why

    • Steve (different one)

I hate to break it to you, but Russo also “sucks”. He has a .731 OPS in AAA, what is that in the bigs, .650?

Is it really worth getting angry over?

Both of them suck. Pena isn’t going to play much. He’s a stopgap.

      • Joe

Russo is yhe better of the two even if they both suck and there is no corolation between minor and major league players granted MiLB numbers are usually better than a players numbers in the majors some cases are different.

  • Adam

So…who gets their number changed, Pena or Stewart?

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Pena doesn’t “have” a number. Last year was another century.

So, Pena, if we’re being technical.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Ramiro is going to shock us all and get 3 hits today. And then 7 hits in the Red Sox series.

  • http://none Favrest

I wanted the Cuban. Or even Laird.

  • Need Pitching (and maybe hitting too)

I’m guessing the fact that Pena got the call up means it’s going to be a Chavez/Nix platoon with Pena backing up SS/2B, at least until Nunez is ready.
