Yanks send Darnell McDonald to Triple-A, release Nelson Figueroa
ByVia Donnie Collins, outfielder Darnell McDonald has cleared waivers and been assigned to Triple-A Empire State. The Yankees designated him for assignment on Tuesday to clear a roster spot for CC Sabathia. McDonald will join Chris Dickerson, Kosuke Fukudome, and Cole Garner as the only healthy outfielders on the Triple-A roster.
In other news, right-hander Nelson Figueroa was released from the Triple-A squad. The 38-year-old pitched to a 3.92 ERA (4.82 FIP) in eight starts and eight relief appearances for Empire State. A few of the older roster fillers figure to be on their way out in the coming weeks as late-season promotions are made. Figueroa was the first casualty.

Our AAA outfield is probably capable of out-hitting the Mariners, Twins and Astros outfields
SSS, but Justin Maxwell was killing it for Scranton in 2011.
Why in the world did they sign McDonald in the first place

Seems like Figueroa would be more expendable than McDonald. Not that McDonald is a valuable piece necessarily, but I feel like this makes sense.
At least he didn’t cut the dreads entirely for nothing.
I think it would be appropriate to mention that Nelson Figueroa’s record for the 2012 Triple A Yankees was 7-2.
I’m always a little surprised at some of these guys who hang on and grind out a life in the minors at >35. That’s a tough life when you have to think chances of making the major league roster are slim. Life in the minors with no real upside seems like a shitty one to me.
But what else do you have going for ya? Seems to me even a chance of making the major league’s once are worth it esp. if they have never been there and thus don’t have the health benefits etc. Seem to remember teams promoting some Org Players in September for just those reasons sometimes.
I think someone wrote a story on this but AAA vets actually make a good living, like 150K/yr or something. It’s not 450K like the major league minimum but for a guy who can’t find a major league job, it’s probably worth their while to keep pitching and maybe you get a major league job. Miguel Batista is probably a comparable guy and he got a job with the Mets.
If that’s true then I guess that’s not so bad. Playing a boys game for more than 2 times what the average American household makes. Hell, I pay to play in a beer league softball league. Making 6 figures to do it would be sweet.
It’s a pretty sweet life…
amazes me how many castoffs yanks can accumulate and expect them to contribute. who’s next, scott kazmir?
That’s the whole point. You can’t sign one scrap heap vet and expect it to work out. You sign 5 or 10 of them and hope one or two works. The Yanks have a pretty good track record with the scrap heap, so I don’t think that’s what you want to be criticizing.
Someone has to fill the slot and, if the guy at AA isn’t deemed ready yet, a guy like this will. Not rocket science.
And yet here we are in July and they have:
Eric Chavez – OPS+ 122
DeWayne Wise – OPS+ 118
Jayson Nix – OPS+ 99
Andruw Jones – OPS+ 121
Raul Ibanez – OPS+ 100
Clay Rapada – ERA+ 169
Cody Eppley – ERA+ 178
Not sure Jones or Ibanez quite belong in that group, but otherwise, exactly this.
Definitely, though I’m not sure ERA+ is a fair way to evaluate relievers (especially a guy like rapada who often enters mid inning.
Looks like KC just fould their fifth starter.
AAA players make just $2150/month minimum. Can’t imagine where the $150K figure comes from

There’s some sort of Veterans minimum for Minor leaguers I think in the new CBA
I think that only applies to players on the 40-man roster.
Guys with MLB service time make a lot more. Cervelli’s contract this year pays him something like $260k in Triple-A. Cust and Branyan are making a ton more I bet.
Yes, guys on 40 man make min of $67,300. It’s all in link below.

Not once you’ve reached free agency or the bigs
I guess Melky Cabrera is not matured.

or too mature, if you know what I mean.
” McDonald will join Chris Dickerson, Kosuke Fukudome, and Cole Garner as the only healthy outfielders on the Triple-A roster.”
Actually, Kevin Russo has played 47 games in the OF this year, compared to 30 in the IF.
