Update: Dellin Betances placed on DL with shoulder tendinitis
By8:28pm: VP of Baseball Ops Mark Newman confirmed to Norris that Betances had an MRI and has been diagnosed with shoulder tendinitis, so at least there’s nothing structurally wrong in there.
5:30pm: The year of the pitching prospect injuries continues. Josh Norris reports that right-hander Dellin Betances has been placed on the Double-A disabled list with a sore right shoulder following last night’s four-inning, 82-pitch outing. With both Manny Banuelos and Jose Campos missing most of the season with elbow trouble, the top three pitchers on my Preseason Top 30 Prospects List have now spent time on the shelf with an arm injury this year.
Betances, 24, is in the middle of a disastrous season split between Triple-A and Double-A. He’s pitched to a 6.44 ERA in 131.1 innings, with a walk rate (6.8 BB/9 and 15.7 BB%) that is far too high and a strikeout rate (8.5 K/9 and 19.6 K%) that is well-below his previous career norms. Arm injuries are nothing new for Betances, who had Tommy John surgery in 2009 and also missed about a month with a sore shoulder in 2008. The minor league season ends in less than two weeks, so he’s probably done for the year even if the Thunder make a deep playoff run.

A sore shoulder huh. So that’s what they’re calling it these days.
Must be shoulder week.
*sigh*
After this season, Betances is a non-propect. Will he get the Brackman treatment?
I would imagine they’d try him in the bullpen first.
It’s pretty preposterous that they haven’t already made that transition, in my opinion. Who knows if it would help, as he can’t find the strikezone with a map, but it’s pretty clear it’s not working out as a starter
The ceiling is supposed to be massive. Not easy to give up on that.
There’s still a whole season, hopefully, in which to try the alternate experiment.
If he can’t throw strikes as a starter why would he be able to throw them as a reliever?
I didn’t say it would work, but would you rather just cut him without trying? I wouldn’t.
Oh definitely try. Just saying that his problem will probably transcend.
It’s possible he would benefit from focusing on two pitches over short bursts.
It’s also been noted by his coaches that he has trouble focusing over the course of multiple innings; a move to the pen might not e such a bad idea. Their goal has been to get him as many innings as possible, but it hasn’t had the effect they had hoped.
I remember one of his two appearances last year in which his motion was so fucked up that the knee on his back leg was scraping the ground a few times.
If he can’t fix that over the course of an entire start, it may be possible that the potential for his mechanics getting fried decrease if he’s out there an inning at a time.
Too bad. I always write about how much I love a NYC kid like this who I remember coming out of high school and who should be living his ultimate dream right now.
I remember that too, but I wouldn’t put much stock into that. They called him up a few days after his last minor league appearance, then had him sit on the bench for 2 weeks before using him in a game. We’ve seen guys get out of their groove just from the long breaks in the playoffs, so I would expect most players to have problems if they don’t play for a few weeks.
Probably not. Brackman was expensive, Bettances is still cheap and still has an option year left. Unless they absolutely need the roster spot, I’d imagine they keep him around for another year and try to salvage something.
Exactly.
Brackman had a MLB deal and had an out.
I’m not to be a hysterical bridge jumper here, but is there a point where you start to question the abilities of the training staff? This seems to my totally untrained eye to be a low probability occurrence.
Easy for us to do. We should always assume others with a hell lot more information than we do know better.
So Pineda/Pettitte/Nova/Banuelos/Campos/Betances/CC/Joba/Mo/Robertson have all been on the DL or will be on the DL for a considerable time. That’s an elite MLB pitching staff right there when healthy. CC/Pineda/Pettitte/Nova and Mo/Robertson/Joba gets it more than done and anything from Betances/Banuelos is just icing. I want us to at least try and get Juan Cruz.
Wouldn’t quite call that elite, but I get your point
Can we never get get excited about a prospect again – at least until he arrives at Yankee Stadium. I wonder whether the Yankees minor league prospect rankings,if properly weighted between AAA,AA and A, is now back to being among the worst in baseball.
Let’s all go back to the days where we only heard of these “Minor Leaguers” once a year in the “On the Way Up” section of the Yankee Yearbook. Where have you gone, Bryan Dayett?
Oh of course we can. We’re fans. Betances was a long shot, project type from the get-go. We all knew the ceiling was a long shot.
Atleast he got some innings in with about 130 innings. Better luck next year
Ship him for something….anything…of value
traid that there feller fer a coupel mules and a waigin whyl he still hass sum valew.
What value? He’s at his lowest point. You dont sell low.
who’s next? I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again Fuck the 2012 season. It’s honestly felt like someone put a curse on the team with all the injuries
“It’s honestly felt like someone put a curse on the team with all the injuries”
the Blue Jays laugh about the Yankees’ injury troubles.
Injuries happen and I’d say it’s an average year for the Yankees when it comes to injuries. It could be a lot worse.
I agree it has a weird feel, but it could morph into a WS win too. Why can’t we have a wacky year that ends in the Canyon of Heroes? Fate often saves an undoomed man if his courage is good.
So he has a weak shoulder.Yep nothing to worrying about.Three of our top four young pitchers have some shoulder problem.Interesting.
It must be all that shrugging! LOL!
lol. That’s a good one, sir.
Our single a pitchers this year have a chance to be really great in future. Just have to be patient. Don’t trade guys like Brett Marshall , Mikey o’ brien or Vidal nuno or Cause while they are not great prospects they may be a viable option if Hughes and Nova get hurt sometime in the near future. While they are not permanent solutions they could be good enough as 4th and 5th starters. This would allow us to be patient enough with our better pitching prospects in minor leagues since there is always pressure to win now!
Time for Yankees to overhaul the Minor League pitching Coach & Staff.
Just by chance some of these prospects should make it.
The philosophy appears flawed, few improve or pick up velocity.
No guys with trick pitches, nothing.
Nobody even hides the ball well.
Other organizations do much better with lower draft choices.
MAybe we’re O.K. with relievers but forget developing starting pitching and if they do make it, 1-2 seasons later the league figures them out.
I agree with your view. If you could get someone like Ray Miller or someone like him to take on this task, I believe things should improve. On the subject of injuries to Nova and Betances, I cannot believe that some fans are so doubtful that these guys are really injured. For one, Nova had all the symptoms missing high with his pitches and Betances with his control. When a tissue is iflamed it means that it is friable and susceptible to tear at any time with one more pitch. For this reason, I don’t believe that Nova or Betances will pitch again this season. But I have not lost faith iin either of them just yet.
