Game 115: Play today, win today

(AP Photo/The Canadian Press, Chris Young)

So this is a pretty big series, no? It’s the teams with the two best records in the league and arguably the two best teams in baseball overall, so this should be a measuring stick for both the Rangers and Yankees. Is it really though? Neither club is at full strength, both teams have sizable leads in their respective divisions, and heck, given the playoff schedule you can argue that finishing with the second best record in the league is preferable to finishing with the best. Eh, whatever. Just win the damn game. Here’s the starting nine…

SS Derek Jeter
DH Nick Swisher
2B Robinson Cano
1B Mark Teixeira
3B Eric Chavez
CF Curtis Granderson
Russell Martin
LF Raul Ibanez
RF Ichiro Suzuki

RHP David Phelps

Tonight’s game is scheduled to start a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and ESPN2 nationally. Enjoy.

  1. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

I haven’t had a chance to go over the Playoff schedule, can somebody please explain why the team with the second best record has the advantage?

    • Strat says:

If the Yankees were to be the one seed it’s entirely possible they could have to fly someplace like Anaheim to play the first two games of a series on the road.

      • Sarah says:

And they have 3 days off, followed by the LDS, and no days off between the LDS and the LCS is the series goes to 5.

The two seed gets to go to the three seed, and their LDS starts a day earlier.

  2. Pat D says:

I can’t figure it out. Is a split OK for this series, or do they need to win 3?

    • Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

They don’t “need” any win or wins at this point. They can lose 3 of 4 and be completely fine.

And even if you argue that they can’t afford a small losing streak at this point, there’s nothing special about these particular 4 games. It doesn’t matter if they lose 3 of 4 to Texas and then win 3 of 4, as opposed to going 4-4 in some other way, and the same goes for any other result for the next several games.

      • Heisenberg's Hat says:

Do you really view the baseball season like that? It doesn’t sound very exciting.

        • Deep Thoughts says:

Dude, that’s exactly how to view it. Their magic number at this moment stands at 44. Every game is a “must-win” till that number reaches zero. It’s pretty simple.

  3. captain kiwi says:

hoping for the best, expecting the worst with phelps starting :/

  4. Just of note, Lowe is #34 to answer my Numberwatch stuff earlier. Guess Aardsma will get No. 34 next year if Lowe doesn’t return.

  5. Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

Explain the logic of our best power hitter hitting 6th?

  6. vicki says:

    das it!

  7. 5IP 2-4ER to high of expectations for Phelps?

  9. jjyank says:

    Nice start, Phelps.

ESPN crew: Don’t you EVER fucking say “wicked smahhht” when announcing a Yankee game EVER.

  10. completely off topic, but it’s been all over the internet to the point where even I’ve seen it, what do you guys think of Miley Cyrus’ new hair-cut. I think she looks cute as fuck with it. Feel free to ridicule me for bringing it up though.

  11. CUYanks says:

It’s too bad we’re facing Josh Hamilton on one of his upswings. He was cold as ice for a good month.

  12. Hall and Nokes says:

Times Andrus will reach base safely in this series: O/U 10.5

  13. CUYanks says:

Are we almost guaranteed to see Lowe in this game if Phelps doesn’t go 5? Or will Joe manage differently if the game is close?

  14. :( I thought Phelpsy would get out of it.

    • jjyank says:

Not really his fault. Infield single, broken bat looper, and a walk to a guy he should be careful with.

I just hate that he threw like 25 pitches and his pitch count was an issue before the game started.

    • CUYanks says:

He broke his bat. 1 run in the first inning isn’t terrible. Dempster is a wildcard here anyway.

  15. captain kiwi says:

  16. The Real Greg says:

I don’t feel good about this. At this rate, Lowe’s coming in in the 3rd or 4th

  17. Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

So which Dempster shows up tonight?

  18. Btw, halfway through that inning I decided I was going to count the number of in game commercials/sponsor mentions during the game.

  19. Will The Thrill says:

I hate Grandy’s lack of range. If the Yankees extend him they should play him in right and play Gardner in center.

    • Laz says:

at this point i would rather them not extend him. He strikes out too much and his obp is deteriorating, and he isnt much of a cf anymore.

  20. mt says:

Tough luck on broken bat single by Cruz. It was a good inning but at 27 pitches at this rate he is due for 3 innings.

Same thing will happen agaainst Red Sox on Saturday – tough to pitch against those 2 line-ups witha reduced pitch count.

  21. Ugh..I know a lot of you guys disagree with me, and Derek does well when he swings first pitch, but his rookie starter just threw 25 pitches the prior inning you think he could take a couple pitches…same with you Swish.

    • Heisenberg's Hat says:

Everyone uses the excuse that he does well when he swings at the first pitch, but doesn’t he do even better when the count is in his favor?
I’d like to see him work the count as a leadoff hitter.

  22. jjyank says:

Why does Dempster shake his glove like that mid-windup? I don’t recall seeing a quirk like that before.

    • CUYanks says:

I remember them doing a story on it a couple years back. I believe he thought he was tipping his pitches with his grip in his glove.

      • jjyank says:

Interesting. Because he’d been in the NL all along, I’ve never really seen him pitch before. In the first inning, I was like “WTF is he doing?” Makes sense though, that would certainly stop you from tipping pitches too early.

  23. Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

Way to go guys! A 10 pitch inning!

  24. Will The Thrill says:

10 pitches, three outs 0 runs for the Yankees. 25 pitches, 3 outs 1 run for the Rangers. Way to go.

  25. Chilango says:

Yanks need to be more patient at the plate. Swisher swings at junk low and away on a 2-0 count. Classic.

  26. captain kiwi says:

haha, i love a-rod, but that particular pic made him look like a HUGE baby.

  27. Chilango says:

    We´re not in Toronto anymore.

  28. Hummingbird S. says:

with the pitching the way it is, the Yankees might get swept by the Rangers.. there’s only one reliable pitcher in the rotation right now.

  29. …really. talk about shitty luck.

  30. Chilango says:

Phuckin Phelps is missing his spots.

  31. jjyank says:

That replay on ESPN was really fucking cool. An over the head shot of Granderson tracking the fly ball, really cool angle. I don’t praise ESPN often (or ever), but bravo.

  32. Phelps is apparently studying under Andy Pettitte.

  33. Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

    Ok , let’s go boys

  34. jjyank says:

Phelps seems to have a pretty damn good pick off move for a righty. He almost got Andrus in the first too.

  35. DERP says:

Chavez gets a hit this inning and we score at least one run.

  36. Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

So glad the yanks didn’t sign Dempster, he’s too much into 1,2,3 innings.

  37. Will The Thrill says:

Horrible at bats. Can we switch hitting coaches with the Rangers?

  38. Cuso says:

Stop getting cute Jeter. Plant and throw, bitch.

  39. Hummingbird S. says:

shitty D will probably lead to runs.. it’s just the way things are going nowadays

  40. DERP says:

I would complain about all the infield hits, but those are bound to happen when you have Jeter at short.

  41. Widget says:

phelps looks horrible and the bats look even worse. figures the game is on ESPN. they must be loving this.

    • Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

Really? The homer was obviously bad, but other than that it’s been a walk to one of the best hitters in the game, some broken-bat/infield singles, and 2 K’s.

      • captain kiwi says:

i don’t even really blame phelps for that homer. murphy went down and dug for that, was good hitting as opposed to shitty pitching.

  42. Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

    Andy Phelps!

  43. jjyank says:

    Guess Andrus was sleeping.

  44. Cuso says:

    The new Andy Pettitte!

  45. DERP says:

cue talk about the Orioles catching us, the Rays catching us, the Red Sox catching us, the Yankees not going to miss the playoffs, etc.

  46. Cy Pettitte says:

Phelps should just hit every Texas player with the first pitch then pick them off 1st to be more pitch efficient.

  47. Chilango says:

What a move. Phelps helps himself.

  48. Heisenberg's Hat says:

Does ESPN have some record of hating the Yankees? This is news to me.

    • Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

Fans of most teams think commentators are rooting against their team. The same goes for people here thinking that ESPN and Fox hate the Yankees. If you go to game threads of opposing teams, you will see the exact same complaints about how ESPN/Fox love the Yankees, fawn over Jeter, etc.

  49. DERP says:

Any idea how many pitches Phelps has?

  50. Johnny Pesky passed away today, that sucks and all, but apparently he was Suzyn’s uncle and they’re going on about him. Shit your uncle passed away, take a day off woman.

  51. DERP says:

It is unfortunate the Beltre is such a good fielder

  52. Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

    Great bunt

  53. …let’s give away an out on 1 pitch. after the first two guys got on base. for the first two hits of the game. down 2.

  54. Kevin G. says:

Surprised that play wasn’t as close as I thought it would be. I blame Beltre and Ichiro being old

  55. sangreal says:

why didn’t Ichiro do that against the Tigers

  56. Kramerica Industries says:

Find the right still shot, and one could barf from how much Beltre torqued his arm on that throw.

  57. DERP says:

An ignore feature would be the greatest thing ever for this blog.

  58. Cuso says:

Bunting ichiro was a mistake by the way

  59. Tom says:

“What a battle with the game on the line”

    - Rick Sutcliff, best in game analyst ever

    • CUYanks says:

He recently suggested on BBTN that if something’s seriously wrong with CC, the Yankees will circumvent all baseball rules and trade for Cliff Lee.

  60. captain kiwi says:

  61. DERP says:

Dempster is just too much into 1-2-3 innings.

  62. Cy Pettitte says: Swish!

  63. sangreal says:

  64. jjyank says:

    I fucking LOVE garbage time!!!

  65. KING OF THE GARBAGE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  66. Jack says:

  67. Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

    Well, that was awesome.

  68. Hummingbird S. says:

    SWISH!!! got all of that!

  69. Kramerica Industries says:

Well, Nick Swisher hit it, so it must not be a clutch spot.

  70. Bunt Gardner says:

    SWISH GT!!

  71. Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

    Garbage time scrub

  72. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Yankees should have “signed” Dempster.

  73. jjyank says:

Was that a slider? That barely even moved at all.

  74. Jedile says:

Me gusta swisha in the #2 spot.

  75. Heisenberg's Hat says:

  76. DERP says:

Really should have ‘signed’ Dempster IMO!

  77. Erica says:

  78. flamingo says:

  79. Chilango, what are your thoughts on Swish again?

  80. Will The Thrill says:

  81. Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

Out of curiosity, how did the ESPN commentators call that home run? Excited?

    • jjyank says:

Yeah, they were. Not crazy, but not pissy either.

      • Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

Yeah, I think people here just notice when the commentators don’t sound especially excited for the Yankees and sound appropriately excited for the opposing team. Overall, I don’t think there’s any bias, but lots of people think there is for some reason.

        • jjyank says:

I don’t think the channels themselves have biases, but certain commenters do. John Smoltz, for example, always sounds like someone just murdered his dog whenever the Yankees do something positive.

        • sangreal says:

people on every single mlb forum think ESPN is biased against their team (usually in favor of the Yankees or Sox)

          • CUYanks says:

I think ESPN does have a lot of Red Sox fans, being in CT. That, plus the fact that they are always rooting for the “underdog” to knock the Yankees down a notch to promote interest, makes them look somewhat negative Yankees.

  82. Tom says:

That bunt paid off big time!

Scared Dempster into walking Jeter and then allowed Swisher to hit the grand slam.

  83. Get Phelps Up says:

The same GMs that wanted to “sign” Dempster would pull him from his start right now and release him.

  84. BK2ATL says:

    Welcome to the AL, Dempster!!!!

  85. Hummingbird S. says:

    really tight strike zone..

  86. Defensive Indifference says:

    Frank Zappa to the mound.

  87. Chilango says:

Swisher comes though. OK. pile it on boys…

  88. Jack says:

    Mike Maddux: Shoulder Rubber.

  89. Heisenberg's Hat says:

    The bunt was still dumb.

/wait we aren’t saying that anymore?

  91. Erica says:

My armchair GM father said that the Yanks should’ve signed Dempster.

I feel like I should go laugh at him right now.

  92. DERP says:

All he does is throw 1-2-3 innings. We sure could have used that!

  93. Kramerica Industries says:

They’re hitting the ball too hard.

For the next hard hit ball, make it another grand slam.

  94. DERP says:

    Finish him Grandy!

  95. Nathan says:

    Hits with RISP?

  96. Chilango says:

Let’s break it open here …

  97. Kramerica Industries says:

    Eh, not bad.

  98. DERP says:

Fire Daniels. He traded for some over the hill NL pitcher instead of giving the kids a chance.

  99. Good tag by Chavez to get into scoring position. Btw all Grandy does is strike out or hit homers.

  100. Hummingbird S. says:

a single here would really break their backs..

  101. Get Phelps Up says:

    Dempster sucks.

  102. flamingo says:

It was too much to ask for two grand slams in one inning, right?

    (Didn’t stop me, though.)

  103. Cy Pettitte says:

I would love to see Roy Oswalt in this game.

  104. DERP says:

How badly would Cashman be crucified here for signing Oswalt and trading for Dempster?

  105. captain kiwi says:

raul comes in for the slame. make it happen

  106. Athenian says:

As I said, Dempster cannot handle the AL East, and from the looks of it, the AL in general. Cashman >>>>>>>>>>> than anyone who wanted Dempster.

    • jjyank says:

I agree. I never wanted Dempster. Older pitcher, career NL guy, a rental. I mean I would have taken him for peanuts, but that wasn’t going to happen. Was glad on July 31 when the Yanks didn’t get him, and I’m glad now.

  107. G says:

Guys we need a new hitting coach. NOW.

In all seriousness Russell might need his own personal coach… At least he puts together decent at bats. Not one of those guys who grounds out 1st or 2nd pitch every time.

  108. Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

    Shut down inning please

  109. DERP says:

    Shutdown inning please

  110. DERP says:

This delayed strike call is annoying.

  111. Erica says:

I love everything about Eric Chavez.

  112. DERP says:

    Does Phelps have one more?

  113. Anybody hear about the show Copper, it’s going to be on BBC America next week, it looks really good.

  114. CUYanks says:

Please get through 5 and Lowe-proof this game, Phelps.

  115. DERP says:

Assuming that Chavez stays healthy and keeps up this level of production (big ifs), what kind of contract does he get this offseason? I’m assuming one year, but how much money?

    • jjyank says:

No idea. But Chavez doesn’t seem like the type to hardball the team, he knows he’s a part time player and likely will be fun with settling to be paid as one. I’m sure he’ll get a raise though. Maybe something like $1.5 mil?

    • Get Phelps Up says:

He was saying Yankees or retirement this offseason, so I’d imagine it wouldn’t take too much to bring him back.

  116. Brett Pedroia says:

If you guys think Phelps is cool now, you should have seen him when he was 11. That’s the one that got away :(

  117. Kramerica Industries says:

ESPN has had some awful camera work tonight.

  118. Robinson Tilapia says:

I belatedly celebrate Swish’s garbage time grand slam. Was having dinner at the time.

  119. DERP says:

Does anyone here play Fangraphs:: The Game? If so, is the live scores tab not working for you?

  120. Ichy balls says:

Really wasting phelps in the pen get over it girardi and keep him stretched out. He is a starter with better stuff than hughes.

  121. Tom says:

    Hit and run here please

  122. DERP says:

I am pretty sure the reason we are doing well is that Brian S. hasn’t posted in the thread.

  123. DERP says:

Kinsler looks a little bit like Rapada.

  124. G says:

How does the ball even bounce that perfectly for a double play… It’s so perfect it’s illogical. Oh well.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

I actually thought that was the most effortless double play in history as well. It shouldn’t even count.

  125. Robinson Tilapia says:

I’ve made the point several times today that David Phelps has never pitched five innings in a major league start. I would love for tonight to be the night I’m ever able to say that again because of the big “W” next to his name at the end of the game.

  126. DERP says:

Just put up a zero and then blow it open with Swish, Robbie, Mark, and Eric. That’s what I would do.

  127. Cuso says:

    Hooray big word usage!

  128. DERP says:

Dempster had a 2.25 ERA in the NL. Hard to believe. I’m pretty sure Ivan Nova would be the best pitcher in the NL.

  129. Erica says:

    C’mon you got this Phelpsie!

  130. Robinson Tilapia says:

    One-pitch out. Cmon.

  131. Robinson Tilapia says:

    Fuck yeah! Pitcher of record!

  132. DERP says:

Obligatory Phelps is our second best starter post

  133. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Great job, Phelps!!!

  134. Get Phelps Up says:

    <3 Phelps.

  135. Hummingbird S. says:

    heckuva start by Phelps

  136. CUYanks says:

How do you think Joe maps out the final 4 innings?

    • Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Eppley for the next 3 batters, then mix/match Rapada, Joba, Logan to finish the 6th and 7th. Then DRob and Soriano (or Lowe if they can tack on some runs).

  137. Ichy balls says:

Nice job phelps too bad cash will trade you this winter for justin upton.

  138. Cuso says:

Are you fucking kidding me? He was 92! He lived a full life.

Mention it! Don’t have it fill up the entire inning then show that fatass Schilling’s wistfully remembering him.

    • Kramerica Industries says:

      Life always seems short.

Sometimes the actual idea of me being dead, thus not existing anymore, can spook the shit out of me. Like, everything I’m doing right now, I would never do anymore.

Just a permanent, motionless, decaying husk of a person. If I’m lucky, that day is still a good 50-60 years away

  139. Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

Nice job phelps, hope Lowe doesn’t blow this lead

  140. For the record, we’re at 16 sponsor mentions that I’ve caught since midway through the 1st on the radio. This is just during the game, before the commercial break.

  141. DERP says:

What are the chances that Phelps stays in the rotation when CC comes back? Give me a percentage if possible.

  142. G says:

Damn fine start by the kid. Couldn’t really ask for much more. He’s pitching on a limit against very likely the best lineup in the game. Got into expected trouble, helped himself out of it, and limited trouble from there on out to go a solid five. Just perfect. I’ve been a Phelps fan for a while, it used to e irrational but he seems to making some strides this year. Count me in the group that believes he can be a useful starter for a while.

  143. DERP says:

Why the hell is Lowe so red?

  144. Phelpsy exceeded my expectations, when I said 5IP 2-4ER I wasn’t even taking into consideration he’d be on an 80 pitch limit. Considering he was limited to those 80 pitches what he did was damn fine.

  145. OMG! Bagels! says:

Just got home. Tried to read the game thread before I put on the game but all I got was Miley Cyrus or Lindsay Lohan or someone got a haircut.

Am I in the right place?

  146. DERP says:

    I am kind of scared.

  147. Betty Lizard says:

Russell Martin hit a single and I missed it!!!!! Damn work. :-(
When I checked at the grocery store I also saw that Swisher hit a grand slam. Hooray!
    What else did I miss?

  148. Hummingbird S. says:

they need to get back to crushing Dempster… they will need more runs

  149. Erica says:

Just had to set the DVR to record “Sharkzilla” – Shark Week is the best week!

  150. Cy Pettitte says:

did Joe misread the score board? it’s 5-2 not 15-2.

  151. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

I was hoping Phelps going 5 would mean no Lowe.

  152. Ichy balls says:

Lowe with the dreaded 34 on.

  153. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Lowe being useful bodes well for this game.

  154. Get Phelps Up says:

    6th inning guy!

  155. DERP says:

Obligatory “Lowe is better than Nova and Hughes” post

  156. 28 this year says:

Thats one more good inning than I expected out of Lowe. Hey, if he can pitch decently in the bullpen, power to the Yankees. So far so good.

  157. Hummingbird S. says:

nice quick inning! if we could get another one like that from him..

  158. OMG! Bagels! says:

Red Sox fans (and reporters) hate that Lowe is in pinstripes. He needs to make them really hate it.

  159. DERP says:

I’m sure Brett Marshall would have struck out the side.

  160. BK2ATL says:

This version of Derek Lowe didn’t actually look that bad. Maybe just small doses is the key???

    • Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

Crappy pitchers still pitch crappily in small doses. Just like in bigger doses, some innings will be okay, others will be terrible. I think the key is really to pitch him in low leverage situations where we need to eat up innings.

  161. G says:

2 fly balls, a swing and a miss, and no runs…

  162. Yankeefan says:

i think lowe will be great with the yankees a sinker ball pitcher coming out of the pen in long relief or can give us a couple of innings i really like the signing.

  163. Erica says:

  164. Cy Pettitte says:

    Chavez is the fucking best.

  165. DERP says:

    That was a bomb.

  166. Kramerica Industries says:

    Jesus, Chavez.

  167. jjyank says:

    Chavez, you rock.

  168. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Chavez is great.

  169. captain kiwi says:

you can do no wrong chavez

  170. Hummingbird S. says:

    wow…amazing stuff from Chavez!

  171. Get Phelps Up says:

    Eric. Chavez.

  172. flamingo says:

    Chavez has been so awesome.

  173. DERP says:

I hope Chavez took Dempster out to dinner before fucking him.

  174. Will The Thrill says:

I bet Dempster is regretting blocking that trade to the Braves right now.

  175. Paul VuvuZuvella says:

What’s the over/under on number of wins for Brandon Weeden this year ? ;)

  176. DERP says:

How much money did Dempster cost himself?

  177. oldmanalex says:

why is this fool dempster still pitching, get that NL garbage out of here.

  178. Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

    Sign Dempster!

  179. CUYanks says:

Let’s have Lowe for a 4 inning save!

  180. captain kiwi says:

    dereK lowe?

  181. DERP says:

Every time I watch Chavez do something great I wonder what could have been if he hadn’t gotten injured.

  182. CUYanks says:

It seems the Rangers are taking a lot of terrible Lowe pitches today.

  183. oldmanalex says:

I got this feeling Derek Lowe is gonna be lights out the rest of the year. not to jinx it or anything …

  184. 28 this year says:

i say Lowe pitches the 8th and possibly even the 9th. At least the 8th, save the bullpen for tomorrow and Lowe isn’t throwing too many pitches and hes not someone you worry about breaking. If he breaks, tooss him

  185. Erica says:

    NICE 1-2-3!

  186. Who is this guy, and what has he done with the real Derek Lowe, and can we keep him?

  187. Erica says:

I don’t want Texas to score again but I always love me a solid #untuck.

  188. flamingo says:

Sign me up for more of this Derek Lowe.

  189. DERP says:

LOFL at the Rangers. They gave up prospects and spent a ton of money to sign Oswalt and trade for Dempster and Cashman got a better pitcher for like 150K.

    • 28 this year says:

Thats Cashman and the front office’s specialty. They find the right guys and say what you want, they tend to cut bait at the right time. They held onto Garcia which turned out to be really prudent. They cut guys when necessary but don’t make rash moves. I like it.

      • OMG! Bagels! says:

People, and by people I mean stuart, forget that Cash is a ninja.

      • jjyank says:

Yep. In terms of overall value, often times the scrap heap guys are better than the big name. And Cashman and Co. have been very good at that.

        • 28 this year says:

Yea and Cashman understands where to get the scrap guys and where to get the big name guys. He understands value isn’t everything because at the end of the day, the Yankees want the most wins even if it costs a lot but when value can be had in a lower position, i.e. bullpen, back end of the rotation and bench, he knows how to build them properly.

          • jjyank says:

Agreed. I think he’s done a very good job of balancing the MLB team with a good farm system for a big market team. $189 seems scary, but I am confident in the current leadership.

          • Mike Axisa says:

I remember reading an interview with Eppler last year, and he said that when they look for scrap heap guys, they target players who used to be stars because they know what it takes to play at a high level. I dunno why, but I found that very interesting.

  190. Karl Krawfid says:

Ichiro with patience man. I like it.

  191. Get Phelps Up says:

Ichiro didn’t even run that hard and still got a triple.

  192. DERP says:

That was nice of Beltre to tell Ichiro that he didn’t need to slide.

  193. Hummingbird S. says:

When 2012 Ichiro is crushing a pitcher, you know that pitcher sucks

  194. OMG! Bagels! says:

I haven’t been home long watching this game but so far it is funtastic.

  195. Erica says:

  196. All he does is pitch 1-2-3 innings guys. He’d be great in pinstripes.

  197. jjyank says:

    Captain, my Captain.

  198. captain kiwi says:

exactly why i love ichiro hitting 9th

  199. oldmanalex says:

man i can’t believe this fool is still pitching. After this game, his ERA will look like Ivan Nova’s.

  200. DERP says:

Dempster only knows 1-2-3 innings and breathing. I don’t even think he knows his name.

  201. OMG! Bagels! says:

Dempster meet dumpster courtesy of Derek Jeter.

  202. Erica says:

    This game is so awesome.

(Still have not risen from my chair.)

  203. OMG! Bagels! says:

Teix is so serious about this quitting smoking stuff.

  204. The Real Greg says:

Now you definitely leave Lowe in

  205. your mom says:

Wow they left Dempster in, oh never mind it’s a lefty clone.

  206. Bus time, goodnight guys, I’m gonna post the list of radio in-game commercials when I get home, probably after the game. it stands currently at 26 including the spot given to jeep at the end of every inning.

  207. DERP says:

Thoughts on signing Dempster to a minor league deal this offseason?

  208. OMG! Bagels! says:

Heard at Yankee Photo Day that Swisher was hugging fans and taking all kinds of photos and shaking hands and was the last one off the field. He’ll take that kid home and let him stay for a week or something.

    • Stratman9652 says:

Something tells me you would never get a word in edgewise with that guy.

      • jjyank says:

Something tells me what all the words that he says would be awesome. A week with Swish could be awesome.

        • Betty Lizard says:

I know some people spend a lot of time figuring out how to trade Nick Swisher or why to let him walk, but I love the guy. There’s a lot of yang on the team but he’s the ying.

I also remember that his first week with the Yankees the team was going on a bus somewhere and they bet Swisher he couldn’t keep quiet for 15 minutes. Swisher lost.

  209. Erica says:

    Garbage time RBI.

  210. Get Phelps Up says:

My fantasy team thanks you, Swish.

  211. jjyank says:

Okay, maybe that one was sort of garbage time :P Still awesome, though.

  212. DERP says:

    This pitcher isn’t fooling anyone.

  213. Rooting for U.S. Steel says:

Your John Sterling moment of the day: “The line on Dempster is complete. Eight runs in six innings. That computes to… an 11 run ERA.”

Um… not according to my elementary school math.

  214. DERP says:

Game 1 of the playoffs and we are facing a righty. Assuming A-Rod is back, who sits between Ichiro, Chavez, and Ibanez?

  215. Kramerica Industries says:

Always, Always, ALWAYS, say no to the Wave.

  216. Get Phelps Up says:

If this score holds, the AL West will be 23-51 (.310 WP) all time at YS3. In comparison, the Astros this year have a .328 WP. I know this doesn’t really mean all that much, but it’s still pretty cool.

  217. Tom says:

So Lowe stays in until 2 batters reach?

Would like to see him finish it out (and get the save!!!!)

    • your mom says:

I say let someone else pitch the 9th and save Lowe for another game this series in case they need a long reliever again. Just 30+ pitches so far.

  218. your mom says:

Surprised it was Hamilton, not Andrus who got a dinky hit.

  219. Arya says:

Nova and Hughes should be on watch. Not only is Phelps ready to take your job, Derek Lowe is too. Hopefully this well pitched ballgame by Phelps and Lowe will light a fire under our two young starters.

  220. Tom says:

The ESPN guys are really talking up David Phelps.

  221. your mom says:

    “That’ll do pig, that’ll do.”

  222. Defensive Indifference says:

    Get Lowe!

  223. Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

    Derek Lowe: True Yankee (TM).

    (I just barfed writing that.)

  224. DERP says:

Nothing would make me happier than to have Lowe do what he doing tonight in Fenway.

  225. Tom says:

    The real drama:

If Lowe finishes it out does he untuck? (He’ll probably get a save)

  226. Hummingbird S. says:

sad to see Granderson struggle like this… cant even hit straight fastballs nowadays

  227. DERP says:

I hope that Orioles fans took a break from fapping to pictures of Manny Machado to catch part of the game.

  228. Hummingbird S. says:

    Lowe for the save?

  229. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Heh … and I was worried about Lowe pitching in this game.

    Nice job, Derek.

  230. Erica says:

  231. Get Phelps Up says:

    Lowe’s first save since 2001.

  232. The Real Greg says:

What a performance by Derek Lowe and David Phelps

  233. jjyank says:

Atta boy Lowe. Way to pitch awesome and spare the bullpen. Nice pick up by the FO.

  234. DERP says:

    Outstanding game.

  235. your mom says:

Great job team. Props to Lowey.

  236. JobaTheHeat62 says:

    Derek Lowe…that is all

  237. Thaaaaaaaayankeeswin says:

Alright who ever called that buy powerball tickets immediately

  238. pat says:

Pretty sure Cash is still a dummyface.

  239. Chilango says:

    Was that Lowe? For real?

  240. Defensive Indifference says:

    Delightful game.

  241. Ethan says:

Out of curiosity how come Lowe gets a save?

    • Get Phelps Up says:

If you pitch the last 3 innings of a game you get a save.

    • The Real Greg says:

It was a 3 run lead when he came into the game in the sixth.

    • CUYanks says:

If you pitch at least three innings and hold the lead, you get the save. As it turns out, he actually entered with a 3-run lead so he could have gotten it by pitching at least 1 inning and finishing the game.

  242. Hummingbird S. says:

Lowe with 4 Ks and 0 BB in 4IP.. awesome.

  243. DERP says:

Just saw that Steve Delabar struck out four guys in an inning. Mark Montgomery is not impressed.

  244. Tom says:

Man outside of the HR, Phelps and Lowe pretty much throttled that lineup. They only had 3 or 4 good hits all game.

  245. jjyank says:

Good game, and good game thread everyone. Have a good rest of the night all!

  246. BK2ATL says:

While Phelps had a pretty good start and did more than anyone thought he could against this lineup, the real story here is Derek Lowe. Just wow!!!! Never thought he’d do that.

    Ninja Cashman still at it.

  247. The Real Greg says:

Lowe being interviewed on MLB Tonight

  248. Robinson Tilapia says:

What was that about Derek Lowe being an instant failure again? Great job by Phelps and Lowe tonight. One of my favorite victories of the year.

  249. Question: Did Lowe untuck?

Also, I counted 23 instances of a sponsor being mentioned throughout the game, but I probably missed a couple while posting or helping customers, because I didn’t hear painting the corners or Bigalow Tea. Those 23 don’t include the ‘yankees baseball driven by Jeep’ every half inning. Including those it’s a total of 40.

  250. OMG! Bagels! says:

I like this Lowe guy. I’m going to forget that I had him mistaken for someone else.

  251. Heisenberg's Hat says:

This game was an awesome F-you to all the crazy bridge jumpers who’d already filled in the Loss column by the end of the 2nd inning when the score was 2-0 Texas.

  252. vicki says:

could someone here please direct me to a website where i can discuss tv shows, people’s families, jobs, and the haircuts of celebrities? there’s way too much baseball talk up in this joint.

    thanks in advance.
