Game 118: Clean Sweep

“Hey, I just realized something! Your name is Mike … and my name is Mike too! We’re like the same guy!” “Shut up we are not.” (Jim McIsaac/Getty)

Taking three of four from the Rangers is a pretty neat accomplishment, but the Yankees have a chance to make it a straight four-for-four series this afternoon. The pitching, starting with the David Phelps-Derek Lowe tandem on Monday and continuing with Hiroki Kuroda on Tuesday and Freddy Garcia on Wednesday has been the backbone of the three wins, and now it’s time for Ivan Nova to follow suit. He’s been struggling real bad for the last month or so, but was very good against the Blue Jays five days ago and hopefully will build off that today. Here’s the starting lineup…

SS Derek Jeter
RF Nick Swisher
1B Mark Teixeira
LF Andruw Jones
3B Casey McGehee
DH Russell Martin
2B Jayson Nix
CF Ichiro Suzuki
Chris Stewart

RHP Ivan Nova

The weather is gorgeous here in New York following last night’s storm(s), so there won’t be any trouble getting this one in. Today’s game is scheduled to start a little after 1pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and MLB Network nationally. Enjoy.

  1. DERP says:

    • Speaking of pitchers who don’t get enough attention, has the world taken notice of how talented Derek Holland is? When we asked one scout, who raves about the Rangers, which starter they could send out there in October to outpitch someone like CC Sabathia, this was the response we got:

“Derek Holland. He’s better than CC right now. I like his fastball better. I like his location better. I like his mound presence better. Most people have no idea how good this guy is.”

  2. Eddard says:

If the lineup can crush Derek Holland like they always do Nova should have plenty of runs to work with. Hopefully the other good performances this series inspire him to do well.

  3. anon says:

This lineup is a joke. 4-5 hitters certainly isnt scaring anyone and 6-9 looks like a joke except ichiro

  4. mike_h says:

Nova, just give us 6.2 IP strong

  5. Nice Scheister says:

Lets go Nova! I wanna see that Swagger back! Shake off the boogerbears and show the world that the domination of that AAA line-up in Canada was no fluke!

  6. Brian S. says:

Nova needs to K AT LEAST one batter per inning or I will be dissatisfied.

  7. DERP says:

    Hensley today:

    2.2 IP, 1H, 3R, 0ER, 2K, 0BB, 2 HBP, 4-2 GO-FO

  8. Will (the other one) says:

Ichiro in center, huh? Didn’t catch the first game he played there since the trade, so I’ll be interested to see how that works out.

  9. Big Member says:

It all started in in 2006. Twas the year when Melky Cabreara, a promising 21 year old won the startng job Spring Training. Immidiately, he anounced his club house presence by making friends with the ultimate playboy millionair Alex Rodriguez and the lovable Robinson ano who just finished his freshman ear in the bigs.…-29-0-11-5.jpg

This firendship had many laughs but many cries too. I have spent last night, trying to analylze the impact Melky Cabrera had on A Rod and Robbie and the results are overwhelming:

    Robbie’s batting average:
    2006: .342
    2007: .306
    2008: .271

    Melky’s batting average:
    2006: .280
    2007: .273
    2008: .249

By analyzing these statistics carefully, I noticed a trend in batting average. As soon as Robbie and Melky bonded, their stats decreased every year. Media alwasy kept us up to date about Cano’s and Melky’s constant parying and how it may have dropped their performance level. Well folks, its true. Melky’s influence hit Robbie hard. We also have this:…jpg?1275659699

In 2009 or 2010, Alex was conirmed of using PEDs It was a very sad day for basebal. But Melky, Alex and Robbie still remained good chums…u4sANl4Zxl.jpg

Then, NYY management said “enough is enough”. Melky was traded to the Braves for some pitcher and Boone Logan. He continued to decline until he was picked up by the Kansas Royals. BUT!!!! Before he was picked up, ARod STRONGLY wanted the Yankees to sign Melky? Why would he do that? Ofcourse they were friends but Alex is very professional. Alas, Alex knew abut Melky’s testes all along……z–300×300.jpg

Now here is my theory. I took a Health class in High School so I know a thing or two about medecine. Lets looks at some famous players from the carebean who were busted for PEDs:

Braun (he went on vacation to dominican)

All these players have something in common. They are from the carrebean. I think that MLB staff mae a fatal mistake and needs to do its research becasue men from the carrebean have HIGHER testosternone levels than others!
And I actually have proof of that as well….…am-379×286.jpg…jpg?1257378497

Mleky and A Rod are innocent becasue they are simply born with higher testosterone like other Dominican males. BUT wait? Why hasn’t Robbie been acused of having taken testosterone shots yet? Well…….44955228.jpeg

…he is an exception to the tesosterone thing.

  10. Talk about the “Wave the white flag B line up.” Andruw batting clean up? LOL

  11. Cuso says:

    Nova’s gonna get torched today

  12. Kramerica Industries says:

Well, there’s another extra base hit from Nova.

  13. Cy Pettitte says:

higher total by the end of the season: Grandy Ks or Nova XBHs?

  14. DERP says:

Ivan Nova doing Ivan Nova things

  15. Mike N says:

    Fucking Nova. Gah.

  16. captain kiwi says:

    sweet mother nova…

  17. pop fly 2 run single…shitty BABIP luck on top of a guy who gives up a ton of XBHs? Hooray.

    • Derek says:

Yea it was shitty luck on the Beltre hit, but he made a terrible pitch to Hamilton. Two strikes, hanging curveball. So inconsistent with the breaking ball this season.

  18. Erica says:

  19. Bartolo says:

    Nova sucks

  20. CountryClub says:

bad luck for nova. An infield squibber and a pop up in no man’s land. The double to Hamilton can be forgiven.

  21. Big Member says:

Uh sorry bout that I typed it up in Notepad becasue I aint got Microsoft Word

    Here are the links:
    Testosterone Theory

Why Robbie is an exception to it

  22. Jag says:

    Why isn’t Chavez the DH?

  23. Big Member says:

Uh Ivan Nowin on the mound…good guys better tack on some runs

  24. captain kiwi says:

    strike 4 to swish haha

  25. Kramerica Industries says:

Paulie’s making the other Newark sound poor.

47,000 people live there. It’s no French Lick, Indiana.

  26. stuart a says:

W yesterday with no homers and a 1 run game.

agree with O’neill Novas slider is the issue. why show your whole bag of tricks before you have to.

Fastball and curve… No sliders when it matters. I think Nova uses to many pitches….

  27. The Real Greg says:

Nobody should whine if we lose this game. We’ve taken 3 of 4 at least from Texas, we’ve increased our lead on Tampa and the Orioles are not considered a threat on here.

This is an absolute pressure free game and Girardi knows it which explains the lineup.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Cano has a stiff neck and Granderson has been awful for a while now and could use a day off. That explains the lineup.

  28. Cuso says:

Something tells me I’m better off being at work this afternoon. This way I can go home tonight and pretend it’s and off-day on the schedule.

  29. The Real Greg says:

So far Nova looks okay. Victimized by an infield single and bloop single.

Double to Hamilton I can forgive because its Josh Hamilton

  30. The Real Greg says:

I really dislike Andruw Jones. If only the Mets weren’t so stupid with Scott Hairston

  31. Brian S. says:

Jones is terrible. He better not be on the postseason roster.

  32. Is Holland still rocking the pedo-stache?

  33. Erica says:

    Another double.

  34. Cy Pettitte says:

    Lowe to the rotation

  35. Eddard says:

Just as you can’t sit Chavez in October, you just can’t continue to start Nova and stash Phelps in the pen. Phelps has just been too good and deserves to start. Nova has been inconsistent and has no command or confidence right now. Freddy has proven his worth. Lowe can handle the long man so Phelps is needed in the rotation.

  36. Brian S. says:

Nova has shown the ability to get strikeouts and grouders so far in his young career. His problem is fastball location. If he can ever fix that he could be really good, which is why I think he should be the 5th starter next season. I woudn’t give up on him just yet.

  37. Kramerica Industries says:

    Novacaine, Novacaine!

  38. The Real Greg says:

I want Hamilton to blast it so we go on to tomorrow

  39. Jag says:

    Get Hamilton please…

  40. Kramerica Industries says:

Looks atrocious for three batters to start the inning – strikes out Hamilton on three pitches.

    Yeah, ok.

  41. Hummingbird S. says:

Nova is absolutely awful right now.

  42. Big Member says:

wow low play by Martin…show some respect the guy is sliding and you dont even make an effeort to lay a tag? Just let him come and get the foot? What if the runner went around the foot huh? Genius Martin.

wont be surpsided to see him beaned

  43. JonS says:

  44. Jag says:

Great job getting out of that one.

  45. The Real Greg says:

    My goodness

  46. Wow, just realized, his first pitch to Murphy registered a Nasty Factor of 100.

    Excellent work by Nova there.

  47. Kramerica Industries says:

That’s a situation that snowballed two weeks ago.

Hope this can get Nova in the right direction.

  48. Hummingbird S. says:

Amazing that he got out of it, but he still needs to get his shit together.

  49. captain kiwi says:

  50. Erica says:

  51. dkidd says:

    i predicted that

  52. JonS says:

BTW, that first curveball that Nova threw to Murphy had a nasty factor of 100.

  53. Athenian says:

Considering that Texas has a better offense than the 2011 Diamondbacks, that no out bases loaded escape by Nova might be better than the one Mariano pulled off in the extra innings game in Arizona.

  54. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

  55. Havok9120 says:

Fantastic job there by Nova. And he hit 97 with a few 96s. Dial it up.

    Now with the bats.

  56. Bartolo's Colon says:

the rangers pulling their best may 2012 yankees impression there

  57. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Don’t try that against Cabrera, but test the best 3B in the league?

  58. DERP says:

I love Nix. For some reason, I always think of T-Pain when I watch him.

    • Luisergi says:

IMO the best bench infielder this team has had since Hairston back in 09′.

Can’t stand Nuñez nor my paesan Peña.

  59. The Real Greg says:

That’s the second time this series Beltre has robbed Ichiro

  60. Brian S. says:

Yay playing for one run when we are down by two…

  61. Brian S. says:

Fuck you Chris Stewart. You work a 3-1 count and you swing???

  62. Kramerica Industries says:

    Beltre is nuts.

  63. Havok9120 says:

    Darn you Beltre.

  64. The Real Greg says:

This looks like that kind of game where the Yankees are not getting any breaks

  65. Erica says:

  66. VCR1111 says:

Would have been nice to score this past inning…second time around hopefully we start getting some big hits. Nova has to keep them at 2.

  67. Hummingbird S. says:

3-1 92mph fastball exactly in the middle of the strikezone.. did Jeter hit it hard at least? (I’m on gameday)

  68. Heisenberg's Hat says:

Michael Kay is in “complete moron” mode today.

    • captain kiwi says:

martin behind the plate and alex knowing about melky’s testes?

      • Heisenberg's Hat says:

I was thinking of “Jeter had a great year last year, after he came back from the injury.”

So in other words, besides the part of the year when he looked terrible and ready for retirement, he was great?

      • Heisenberg's Hat says:

He’s revisiting the “Jeter only had a bad first half of the year last season because of the pressure to get that 3000th hit” silliness.
It isn’t that hard to just say “Jeter’s getting old. He’ll have good months and bad months. Let’s just enjoy the good ones.” It’s not more complicated than that. What about this year, when Jeter stunk in May and June? What was he thinking about then?

  69. Brian S. says:

I think the Rangers will try to move Beltre this offseason so they can play Olt.

    • Kramerica Industries says:

Beltre has been fantastic for the Rangers the past two years.

I would expect them to open up the 1B or DH slots, if possible.

  70. Bartolo's Colon says:

don’t worry guys, granderson, cano and a-rod are up next inning

  71. Mike N says:

    Needed that DP! Nice!

  72. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    That’s not good.

  73. Mike N says:

Oh, shit! Nova twisted his left ankle!

  74. Kramerica Industries says:

No need for more daygame shenanigans with the injuries.

  75. Eddard says:

Nova limping. Better start warming up Lowe. Just when he was turning it around, too.

  76. The Real Greg says:

Looked he strained his groin. Luckily we have reserves.

  77. Erica says:

    OH no…

  78. Athenian says:

Suck it up Nova… just an ankle roll nothing big. BE A MAN!!!!!

  79. Brian S. says:

    Left ankle rolled over…

  80. CountryClub says:

that looked bad until i saw the replay. Now i’m wondering what he actually tweaked.

  81. Jag says:

    Please don’t be hurt :(

  82. Alkaline says:

There is just no way Big Member is serious. I typed up a comment earlier to his first conspiracy post but it didn’t go through. All I could say is if he’s just trolling, how sad it is he has this much time to come up with that much crap.

If he’s “super serial” then it also makes me very disheartened there are actual people who have thought processes like this. Ugh.

  83. CountryClub says:

    maybe his back?

  84. Gonzo says:

I just read last night’s thread. Big Member is a genius.

I wonder if Big Member is related to Big Bertha.

  85. Brian S. says:

    That was ball 4 Swisher…

  86. Kramerica Industries says:

    Never would’ve guessed Julio Franco.

    Michael Young was a given.

  87. wow says:

good thing this lineup kills lefties.

  88. Brian S. says:

“Mo loves to shag. That was his routine.”

  89. because of Luisergi from this time forward, when directing a comment at me, instead of Plouffy, or Voldy, I’d like to be you-who-shall-not-be-named.

  90. Brian S. says:

Get the fuck off my team Jones.

  91. Brought in to kill lefties, constantly Ks on sinkers down and away. Ladies and Gentleman, the new and terrible Andruw Jones.

  92. The Real Greg says:

Axisa has talked about that there are 50 games in a year that you are destined to win. This has the feel of one of them. Holland getting some BaBip and some great defense. Yankees getting beaten essentially by bloops.
    What can you do?

  93. The Troll says:

    Love gettin’ one hit. SENSATIONAL!

  94. Kramerica Industries says:

Some of these commercials, are absolutely grating.

  95. CountryClub says:

I think if Nova can keep it where it is that they’ll come back and win. Bats getting owned right now, but I feel a big inning coming on.

  96. Bartolo's Colon says:

i’m not wyaching, but it seems that nova is coming back out? what happened, i guess it wasn’t too bad?

  97. Hummingbird S. says:

Unfortunately Andruw is still useless. It can’t be that hard to find a guy who can hit lefties better than him.

  98. dkidd says:

holland needs to pee in a cup. he looks twice as “fit” as last year

and while i’m making vague accusations, aj pierzynski looks awfully buff

  99. Mike N says:

  100. Big Members Only (formerly RI$P FTW) says:

    Go for the sweep!!!

  101. Kramerica Industries says:

Just not able to get anything going so far.

    Kinda annoying.

  102. 1 hit by pedo-stache. I’d much rather it be Dice-K V2.0

  103. Heisenberg's Hat says:

Let’s just keep letting Holland off the hook, what do you say?

  104. The Troll says:

Is Holland any good? Just by glancing at his ERA I wouldn’t believe so . . . . Also, I agree on Jones . . . He needs to get his shit together or pack it on up and GTFO.

  105. Hummingbird S. says:

they keep hitting it to the left side of their infield and it’s not going through… so that’s what awesome D looks like.

  106. Kramerica Industries says:

Those tacky necklaces/bracelets/anything shouldn’t be worn on the field.

  107. Big Member says:

Yanks should make a play for Micheal Young in the offseason. He is deeply underappreciated by Texas, why is a rookie getting his play time? If Chavez continues to rake, he can demand a 2 year deal and Yanks will have no choice but to let him go.

If we can trade someone like Waren to Texas, we’ll get a veteran who can play 3B/SS/2B/1b. In additon, he can be used to persuade Hamilton and Napoli to come over (they will be free agents) .

    Next year:

    SS: Jeter
    3B- Young
    CF- Hamilton
    RF- Swisher
    1B- Texi
    2B- Cano
    LF- Ichiro
    3B- A Rod
    C- Napoli

  108. Brian S. says:

This offense sucks. I miss Nunez.

  109. The Real Greg says:

Again, no complaining. We won 3 of 4 against this team

    • Kramerica Industries says:

How many years have you been watching baseball, and yet you still think the game is over in the 6th inning with a two run margin?

  110. Kramerica Industries says:

  111. Brian S. says:

    I seriously fucking hate Jones.

  112. Will (the other one) says:

    Did Andruw just get shot?

  113. The Real Greg says:

  114. Heisenberg's Hat says:

Andruw Jones. What happened to you?

  115. Havok9120 says:

I can’t believe that that just happened. Sigh.

  116. Bartolo says:

    What the hell was that??

  117. Jones made the catch and fell down!!!! No, he obviously didn’t make the catch, it hit behind him and bounced into the bullpen. -The one and only John Sterling everybody.

  118. Brian S. says:

That better be a fucking error.

  119. sangreal says:

    What the heck was that….

I get the missing the ball part, but why did he just collapse and roll around on the ground?

  120. mick taylor says:

hey, andruw jones is really great , isn’t he. the yankees , aspiring to be a championship team, with this soon to be 199 hitter.

  121. Brian S. says:

    Darnell McDonald.

  122. Mike N says:

    DP NOW!

  123. wow says:

    lol at this whole game.

  124. mick taylor says:

where are all the anruw jones fans, stand up and be counted.

  125. The Real Greg says:

This is one of those 50 games that the Yankees are not destine to win

  126. Big Member says:

Bunting with a 3 run lead?

  127. Mike N says:

    PLEASE GET A DP NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!

  128. Athenian says:

This is the game right here. 2+ more runs, might not get over that 5-0 score.

  129. Brian S. says:

    Wow Nova.

  130. Kramerica Industries says:

Now the game is starting to slip away.

  131. The Troll says:

What’s this team’s record in potential sweep games? Seems like they never bring the brooms . . .

  132. Hummingbird S. says:

He seriously has no idea where the fastball is going.

  133. Jag says:

Another walk…. take him out. He’s obviously gassed.

  134. Anthony says:

Good call Girardi, take him out.

  135. The Real Greg says:

This outing is hard to judge.

Nova looked shaky, but he was victimized by bloops and Andruw Jones

  136. wow says:

Nove needs to straighten himself out in the minors. He can be so much better. He’s shown it before.

  137. captain kiwi says:

just saw the replay on jones. sorry, but that is fucking hilarious.

  138. Mister D says:

If we lose this game, we have no chance in the playoffs. But if we win this game, we still have a chance in the playoffs.

  139. Erica says:

WHAT is going on/has been going on with Nova? This is frustrating.

  140. Athenian says:

I am convinced Nova needs to grow the fuck up. He pouts like my 2 yr old

  141. Brian S. says:

Nova was fucked by Andruw Jones and BABIP but a 4/2 BB/K ratio is not good. I was hoping for more from him today.

  142. Brian S. says:

The Rangers really whine to the umpires a lot.

  143. Mike N says:

  144. Widget says:

I wanted the sweep, but not bummed they won’t get it. I am however bummed that Holland is owning them.

I really want a sweep of the red sox though. that would be pretty damn awesome.

  145. Bartolo's Colon says:

just saw the jones replay, does he suffer from narcolepsy?

  146. The Real Greg says:

    Damn Beltre is glovin’ today

  147. Brian S. says:

    lol Stewart

  148. OT but I can’t believe how parents let their kids dress these days, I just went out for a cigarette and there was a mom and daughter at the bus stop. The girl couldn’t have been more than 8 and she’s wearing heels, white borderline see through short shorts, and an open back top.

  149. Kramerica Industries says:

    Burning up the basepaths.

  150. Mister D says:

That would have been really close.

  151. Brian S. says:

That’s two. Tie this bitch up Teix.

  152. Jag says:

    Ichiro! Jeter! Swish!

  153. Kramerica Industries says:

The two runs they allowed, they’ve gotten back.

Time for two more, or more than that.

  154. Adam says:

Stat padding, getting an RBI while losing…

  155. Mike N says:

    LET’S GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  156. stuart a says:

nova is another enigma… loves to throw his whole repetoire of pitches. sure andruw jones fed up on the double but then Nova goes in nibble mode big time..

really 2 hard hot balls today.. the beltre 2 run single was a bloop. the hamilton double should have been an out. gentry weka fielders choice, etc…

  157. Brian S. says:

    God dammit Teixeira.

  158. Jag says:

  159. sangreal says:

Kay: Your lips to Andruw’s ears

  160. Kramerica Industries says:

    Andruw giveth.

  161. Havok9120 says:

Boo. That was actually a really nice pitch to Tex.

So, is Andruw forgiven now, Brian?

  162. Cy Pettitte says:

oh my fucking god Andruw! that was awesome. I forgive yo.

  163. Brian S. says:

    I’ll see myself out now.

  164. Jones!!!!!!!!!!!! I no longer hate you!!

  165. Anthony says:

ANDRUWWWW way to make it up!!!

  166. Big Members Only (formerly RI$P FTW) says:

    LOL @ Jones haters

  167. dkidd says:

  168. Adam says:

Ha! Yes, I did stand up for Andruw Jones. What do you have to say now?

  169. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

That …. is why Andruw is still on the team.

  170. Bartolo says:

Okay Jones I see you. We can be friends again

  171. Mike N says:

    Andruuuuuuuuuuw for MVP of TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  172. Mister D says:

  173. Will (the other one) says:

  174. Mike Axisa says:

Boo hoo get Andruw Jones off my team crew.

  175. Eddard says:

lol, everyone calls for Andruw’s head and now he’s the hero.

  176. The Real Greg says:

    Redemption. Well done Jones

  177. DERP says:

lol at all you idiot haters

  178. Mister D says:

    Nevermind. Its fair.

  179. Kramerica Industries says:

    Clearly a fair ball.

  180. Get Phelps Up says:

    Suck it Andruw haters.

  181. Erica says:

  182. Tom Q says:

As we were all saying, love that Andruw Jones.

  183. Havok9120 says:

AND it was off the ‘Cuse sign. Good stuff.

  184. Adam says:

What’s the verdict (the radio crew are saying it was fair)?

  185. Mike N says:

    It looked clearly fair.

I like how one ump stays on the field to “maintain order”, so the fielders don’t just stone cold start doing the lambada.

  186. captain kiwi says:

DRUWWWW!!! you bring hilarity and rbi’s to today’s game, very awesome

  187. DERP says:

I wonder if Texas fans are too busy laughing at all the funny impressions Holland does to know that he sucks.

  188. Kramerica Industries says:

Cody Eppley helped keep this game manageable, I suppose.

One inning and suddenly Holland’s line doesn’t look nearly as good as it did ten minutes ago.

  189. Bartolo's Colon says:

i was surprised to see so much andruw hate today. he has been on a bad slide lately, but he was very hot for a while. i am sure chavez will suck for some period of time before the season is over (or god forbid, get hurt). plus, jones still plays pretty good defense, except when he gets smited by the sun. you can’t say that about raul

    • Adam says:

I know, it is almost as if some people on the board are short-sighted, impulsive and frequently drone on about getting rid of players without thinking it through.

  190. Roger Maris's Adopted Stepson says:

The Rangers lose a timeout on that challenge, too! Sweep, sweep, sweep!

  191. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

  192. Adam says:

    Wow, another Sterling fumble…

  193. Jag says:

Casey! Yes, an error… but I’ll take it. lol

  194. Kramerica Industries says:

Ok, and now both teams have OFers make huge flubs this inning.

  195. Get Phelps Up says:

  196. Yank The Frank says:

    Boom go the dynimite!

  197. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Well that sure went south in a hurry for Holland.

  198. dkidd says:

maybe this is one of the 50 games we’re destined to win?

  199. jjyank says:

For those watching, can I have a quick recap?

  200. The Real Greg says:

Now I do question Girardi. Why not pinch hit Ibanez?

  201. Jag says:

I kinda wish they’d pinch hit Chavez in now, but hopefully Martin produces.

  202. Mister D says:

We should atleast acknowledge that reaching across your body on the run/coast is a pretty unnatural play for an unnatural OF?

    • Havok9120 says:

Oh, no doubt. But he did the hard part. If you get the ball in the mit, you really should catch it.

      • Mister D says:

That’s sort of what I disagree with. The easy part was running it down, the hard part is catching it with your arm partially obstructing your view.

(Just guessing, strongly, that he catches normal fly balls one-handed and shoulder level or lower. I … uh … know a guy who had/has that same issue.)

        • Havok9120 says:

Hmmmm. I really never thought about it that way.

To me, its the same thought I have about pro football recievers: when the ball hits you in the hand, you really should catch it.

          • Mister D says:

Right, but in my analogy maybe its like why we just sort of shrug when a CB drops a pick on a ball any WR catches. Just a little bit less natural and for a pretty logical reason. Either way, it was nice for him to give us that run.

  203. Jag says:

Forget my earlier comment, Russ produces!

  204. Kramerica Industries says:

Turning Russell loose on 3-0, works out.

  205. Havok9120 says:

    All aboard the Russ Buss!

  206. captain kiwi says:

    keep it goingggggggggg

  207. DERP says:

    Let’s do this.

  208. The Troll says:

Andruw phoned home between ABs. Gran’mama is now on speed-dial.

  209. Mike N says:

  210. Erica says:

    Where’s Betty Lizzard?

  211. Big Members Only (formerly RI$P FTW) says:

Sterling is talking about how resilient the Yankees are. LOL.

  212. Hummingbird S. says:

fuck, I missed all the fun… I guess Jones can be useful sometimes. So can Martin. GREAT!

  213. Athenian says:

So the real question is, are the Yankees playing much better (yes from three weeks ago) or is Texas that bad right now (yes)? So what is gained from this series except 4 victories?

    • Adam says:

      Four victories.

These two teams are pretty evenly matched, I think we all know that. All of this is basically prologue till the playoffs.

      • Mike N says:

Srsly. I don’t even understand where the original question is coming from. The victories are the whole point, aren’t they?

    • pat says:

      Who cares?

    • The Real Greg says:

Texas had won 8-11 coming in here so Texas is not that bad right now.

It might just be the Twins type of jinx where they just can’t win here

    • Havok9120 says:

      A) We haven’t won or lost the game yet.

      B) Wouldn’t 4 wins be enough? Why does it need to be some huge statement or predictive event?

I would also point out that, given your record on this kind of stuff, had the Yankees been swept at home during this series its quite likely you’d be one of the ones talking loudest about the team being inconsistent, not a “real” playoff team, and other such nonsense that only gets said when we lose a couple games.

  214. Jag says:

    Martin stolen base!

  215. Get Phelps Up says:

    That was a fun inning.

  216. Kramerica Industries says:

So, gotta maneuver the 7th here, and if that works, then it’s DRob/Sori again, hopefully.

    Well, go forth.

  217. Alkaline says:

Okay. I followed RAB a bit for most of the game. I just had the opportunity to turn on the TV that inning for Ichiro’s at bat.

I’m glad I watched the whole inning. Woohoo!!!

  218. Logan’s up for Hamilton and Beltre right?

  219. Dela G says:

    man derek holland sucks

  220. Mike N says:

    C’mon, bullpen!!!!! Bear down!!!!!!!!!!!

  221. Cuso says:

    Eppley > Nova because wins

  222. Jag says:

I hope they get Cody his first win of the season!

  223. Mike N says:

What is the rationale for Logan instead of Rapada here? That Logan is better to keep in after Hamilton’s AB?

  224. Kramerica Industries says:

Excellent response to the 3-1 count.

  225. Havok9120 says:

    jjyank! Bring forth the cookies!

  226. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

  227. Kramerica Industries says:

  228. Something just clicked for me Suzyn just said “can you believe I just did a spot about Labor day? It feels like we just took the plane north from Spring Training.” She spent all of April and May, even into June guaranteeing that it would snow again, saying “I won’t believe winter’s over until it snows.” I wonder if she still thinks that.

  229. pat says:

  230. The Real Greg says:

    Where was that?

  231. dkidd says:

red sox mistake with the single, bringing up red sox mistake

  232. Mike N says:

  233. Kramerica Industries says:

    That blows.

  234. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

  235. Damnit Logan, no more cookies for you.

  236. Jag says:

    Ugh, that’s deflating

  237. swishers fauxhawk says:

  238. The Real Greg says:

Just good hitting by the Rangers

  239. Havok9120 says:

    Lets go Joba.

  240. Mike N says:

I lost the plot for a second. Who’s coming in now?? Joba?

  241. The Real Greg says:

You can only hold this lineup down so many times

  242. Kosmo says:

Boone is throwing way to many sliders.

  243. Pat D says:

This is why my dad still has no faith in Logan.

  244. Hummingbird S. says:

Boone Logan, relief ace (not really)

  245. pat says:

Walkoff for the sweep is much more deflating anyway.

  246. Mike N says:

    C’mon, Joba!

  247. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

    Love the strikeout

    Hate the intentional pass

  248. myfault says:

Turned the game off when Rangers singled to make it 3-0 and it seemed like the game was gonna be blown wide open.

Turned the game back on when I saw Yanks tied the score at 4 all and then saw Russell’s RBI single.

Now they’re tied 5-5 and Rangers have bases loaded. :(

  249. Mike N says:

  250. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Well that sucked

  251. Kramerica Industries says:

Oh some jammed, up-the-middle cheap shit.

  252. Pat D says:

  253. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

  254. The Real Greg says:

You can only hold back their lineup for so long. They are going to score alot eventually. Another reason not to feel upset about this.

  255. Hummingbird S. says:

    That’s unfortunate.

  256. Widget says:

That’s what you get for intentionally walking Mitch Moreland. Pathetic display by Joba as well. Joba sucks.

  257. Mike N says:

    Please get the fucking out.

  258. Alkaline says:

Where’s that Hulk Sad JPG now?

  259. Mike N says:

    Thank you!

  260. Pat D says:

Any time I hear “God Bless America” now I always think of the following lines of dialogue:

Tuco: Hurrah! Hurrah for the Confederacy! HURRAH! Down with General Grant! Hurrah for General… What’s his name? Lee! LEE! Ha ha. God is with us because he hates the Yanks too. HURRAH!

Blondie: [spits] God is not on our side because he hates idiots also.

  261. Mike N says:

    Let’s score some RUNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  262. Alkaline says:

I want pie today. What say ye, yankees?

  263. DERP says:

I don’t see any way we lose this game.

  264. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Serious question: has Ichiro had more seeing eye singles than any player in baseball history?

  265. Get Phelps Up says:

    Tie it Raul.

  266. Pat D says:

Obviously Ibanez has to hit a home run.

  267. JLC 776 says:

I would be very happy with a late inning rally to win… there have been far too few of those this year.

    Fucking Athletics…

  268. The Real Greg says:

Girardi rolling the dice here a little bit

  269. The pitcher would hit in Stewart’s spot right?

  270. Roger Maris's Adopted Stepson says:

This is why you don’t DH your second catcher Girardi you moron

  271. DERP says:

    Let’s go

  272. Havok9120 says:

My heart jumped when he pulled that groundball foul. That was a pretty sound.

  273. Alkaline says:

Let’s go Yanks! Quick, everyone go do what they were doing during the 5 run inning!

Random question: There’s no way to have RAB autoupdate the comments section instead of refreshing it, right?

  274. Well…that could’ve been worse.

  275. Mike N says:

C’mon, Jeet! Double would be nice!

  276. Mike N says:

    Thank you for the error!

  277. Adam says:

Wow…that was confusing on the radio.

  278. Havok9120 says:

    Well that was unexpected.

  279. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Wow, that is a tough time deny Texas the neighborhood call.

    Not that I’m complaining.

    • Mike N says:

My experience is that they only give it to you when the throw is good. If it’s a dodgy throw, then it’s enforced strictly.

    • Pat D says:

Neighborhood play didn’t even apply. Young wasn’t close to having the ball and the bag at the same time.

  280. Mike N says:

    Base hit? Oooookay.

  281. please tell me what just happened…halfway through the play sterling just said words, like just names and numbers seemingly at random.

  282. Alkaline says:

Loved the slide by Raul! (Even though it didn’t have any effect)

  283. Pat D says:

They gave him a hit? Yea, that’s hometown scoring.

  284. Pat D says:

They gave him a hit? Yea, that’s hometown scoring.

  285. YanksFanInBeantown says:

Can we just stop for a second and appreciate the fact that DEREK JETER is hitting .321 right now?

  286. 28 this year says:

    C’mon Teix!!

  287. DERP says:

    Do it Mark. DO IT.

  288. YanksFanInBeantown says:

So he does remember how to walk…

  289. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Give Swisher a big assist on that run.

  290. Pat D says:

Well at least it wasn’t a DP.

  291. Jag says:

I’ll take the one when that was a dp ball.

  292. Mike N says:

That was huge that Swisher slowed him down.

    • Alkaline says:

And as I was typing that they replayed Jone’s HR and I got excited at first before I saw it was a replay.

  293. 28 this year says:

Ok at least one run. Chavez batting for Jones should the pitcher be changed?

  294. Havok9120 says:

    Very nice slide, Swish.

  295. Anthony says:

    Some nice baserunning/hustling this inning

  296. Mike N says:

Cone just called out Jones for swinging like a whiffleball batter.

  297. 28 this year says:

Ugh. Well two more innings to try adn get that run back.

  298. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

That’s alright, the Yankees are Joe Nathan’s daddy.

  299. DERP says:

Let’s not allow any more runs.

  300. Erica says:

    Dangit Jones

  301. The Real Greg says:

If the Rangers are going to break this streak, they are going to have to hang on by their fingernails.

  302. Squints says:

Can the Yanks send Joba back to the trampoline and outta the bullpen?
    Still a bum.

  303. TheLastClown says:

Good to score a run when Ichiro hit the ball the farthest on a 35 hopper through the hole on the right side.

  304. Get Phelps Up says:

The Yankees are so winning this game.

  305. Girardi is getting all NL on this shit.

  306. Mike N says:

    Well, that fucking sucked.

  307. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    WTF Swish?

    and Joba sucks

  308. The Real Greg says:

    Nothing you can do.

  309. Havok9120 says:

    Oh come on outfielders.

  310. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

    Well that was…not good.

  311. sangreal says:

So happy to have Nix instead of Nunez out there

  312. Get Phelps Up says:

    No Rapada for Hamilton?

  313. Cuso says:

    Joba sucks

  314. DERP says:

    Where are the Rapadas?

  315. Havok9120 says:

Yeeeeeeeehaw. Alright boys, lets get out of this.

  316. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

Wow, let’s not throw an 87mph slider at the numbers again.

Time to give Joba the hook.

  317. Havok9120 says:

  318. Heisenberg's Hat says:

LOL at this idea that Joba was going to come back and be some kind of SECRET WEAPON.

  319. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

And that’s why…you don’t play Raul Ibanez in the field.

  320. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Joba still?

  321. Mike N says:

  322. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Can we take the shitty pitcher out yet?

  323. The Real Greg says:

No whining please. We’ve already won the series.

    • Heisenberg's Hat says:

Joba isn’t pitching well. That’s not whining.
I’m ecstatic we won the series. I just wish our bullpen could have thrown a shutdown inning after we took the lead. That would have been really nice.
But we’re playing with house money.

    • jjyank says:

There will always be whining during a loss.

But sure, I think all of us would have signedup for taking 3 of 4 if you asked 4 days ago.

  324. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Fucking awful.

How bad does he have to suck before they take him out?

  325. Mike N says:

I generally don’t like booing pitchers like that, but I have to say, if I were at this game, I think I’d be booing, too.

  326. Tom says:

93-97 and he’s throwing slider after slider.

It’s a good pitch until you miss location with it. Maybe when you keep missing with it, you should stop throwing it?

  327. The Real Greg says:

Again people, this is not a must win. Calm down

  328. Mike N says:

Coming back from pretty far behind, taking a lead, losing that lead, and then letting the other team score insurance runs is among the most painful possible ways to lose from the fan perspective. Heated reactions should be viewed in light of that.

    • Chilango says:

Especially since when Joba came in, you just knew it was over.

    • Tom says:

Didn’t you know, after you win 3 games in a row, the next game is gravy.

Had the Yankees won only 2 out of 3, it would clearly have a different meaning.

But I think the “Greg rule” applies only to consecutive wins within a series. For example had they the last 2 games of one series, the first game of the next series, then that middle game OBVIOUSLY matters (even though they won 3 in a row). It’s all about setting up arbitrary expectations.

      • The Real Greg says:

        There you go

      • jjyank says:

I think the point is that a four game set against a powerhouse team, you’d usually be pretty thrilled about a .750 winning percentage. Four game sweeps are difficult to accomplish, especially against a team like Texas.

        • Mike N says:

The hard part of a four-game sweep is winning the first three games. The fourth game is no harder to win because you have already won three.

          • jjyank says:

Right, but I don’t view baseball in a day-to-day way. It’s a larger picture sort of sport, and I won’t get all pissy if they win 3 out of 4 instead of all 4.

            • Mike N says:

I don’t think anyone’s “pissy” about a 3-of-4 versus 4-of-4 series outcome. It was just particularly painful to come back from pretty far behind to take the lead and then haplessly squander that lead with bullpen shittiness.

              • Mike N says:

This is all way too meta, anyway. But I guess the point is that you watch the game hoping to see a win, and it is more fun if that win happens, and it is disappointing when it doesn’t. If all you really care about is the final season W-L record, the why would you care about or watch *any* single game?

        • Tom says:

It’s a 162 game season, not a collection of 50-60 three to four game series.

This mentality that the 4th game of a series when you have won the first 3 games has any different meaning than the 3rd game of a series you have split 1-1 is a bit absurd.

          They all count the same.

  329. Heisenberg's Hat says:

Texas has received THREE intentional walks in this game. Because the one thing they needed more of was baserunners.
    It’s times like I don’t defend Girardi.

  330. Mike N says:

Note: the game is not over yet.

  331. Havok9120 says:

    Adrian Beltre….sigh.

  332. Havok9120 says:

Okay….this makes me sad. I get why you don’t switch Cano and Andruw last inning, but if Cano is available….

I just really wish he’d been the hitter there.

  333. CountryClub says:

I’m sure someone else has mentioned this, but I have no idea why Robertson didnt start the 8th. Girardi refuses to use him when they’re down a run. You have to trust that O would score at least 1 run with 6 outs left. Pitch your best pitcher and keep it at 1 run.

  334. Mike N says:

This fucking pitcher is having some trouble staying on the goddamn mound.

  335. Adam says:

Wow…a John Habyan reference by Sterling.

  336. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    WTF is Cano doing?

  337. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

    Robbie, what are you doing??

  338. Heisenberg's Hat says:

    WTF Cano???

  339. Chilango says:

fucking 2 outs and Cano doesn’t score WTF

  340. Pat D says:

    Wow, Cano. Wow.

  341. Adam says:

Ok, listening to this game, Sterling’s commentary makes it sound like that minor league home run hitting contest with the people drinking on the field and the guy jumping up and down on the trampoline.

  342. Get Phelps Up says:

    Whyyyy Cano????

  343. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    That’s on Thomson. WTF?

  344. So which Robbie should I be mad at?

  345. Tom says:

What the hell was Thompson doing?

It looked like he didn’t give him a hold or a wave home.

  346. Mike N says:

  347. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

I’ve never noticed how much Thompson looks like Tim Donaghy until right now.

  348. Chilango says:

    Thompson didn’t send him.

  349. Havok9120 says:

    That was highly disappointing. Just….oy.

  350. Mike N says:

Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. Somebody fucked up leaving Cano on third. Dunno if it was Cano or Thompson.

    • Havok9120 says:

Both. Thompson wasn’t waving or holding (might have been shouting something), but Robbie didn’t go on his own, either.

  351. The Real Greg says:

Thomson did signal him to go.

  352. The Real Greg says:

Either way, if Cano gets thrown out at home, we are still blaming him or Thomson with 2 outs

  353. AaronGuielWithASmile says:

  354. sangreal says:

    what is going on today

  355. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Ichiro doing his best Granderson impersonation in CF.

  356. Adam says:

    One of those odd games.

  357. Mike N says:

Nice play by our defensive specialty outfield pickup. lolz

  358. Havok9120 says:

Seems like Yakkety Sax should be playing in the OF today.

  359. The Real Greg says:

    Stop it everybody

    • Havok9120 says:

Breathe some, Greg. You’re freaking out about other people caring almost as much as anyone is actually freaking out about the game.

  360. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

This game is just all kinds of fucked.

  361. Well, 3-4 against the other powerhouse of the league? Can’t complain.

    • Get Phelps Up says:

(although this game has been pretty frustrating)

    • Mike N says:

I agree that you can’t complain about the series outcome. But the sequence of events of this game was an emotional rollercoaster. If the Rangers had taken a four run lead early in the game and never lost it, that would have been much less annoying (and much less fun). And it especially sucked that Joba was putrid.

  362. CountryClub says:

Boy, this has just been one of those games. Bloops, infield hits, balls lost in the sun, bad reads, squandering scoring chances, questionable decisions by Girardi.

Maybe this really is one of those games they never had a chance to win.

    • Mike N says:

They had a chance with a one-run lead.

      • The Real Greg says:

Yeah but the Rangers were due for a game like this.

        • Havok9120 says:

We had a lead and blew it. We had scoring opportunities and blew them. Crummy defense and crummy pitching caused a ton of damage. No one is saying it isn’t understandable to lose a game to the Rangers. No one is saying that the Yanks shoud’ve swept because Texas is overrated or somesuch nonsense. They’re saying we had a good chance to win this game and that we lost because of errors, bad luck, and crummy middle-relief pitching.

And they’re absolutely right. And its okay to be upset about that, because this was a winnable game.

    • The Real Greg says:

      Thank you!

  363. The Real Greg says:

And, in hindsight of course, it wouldn’t have mattered if Cano scored because the Rangers got the run right back.

  364. Mike N says:

My summary of today’s game is “Fuck you, bullpen.”

  365. Chilango says:

So we held them in check in 3 of the 4 games, not too shabby.

  366. pat says:

Walkoff sweep to crush their souls.

  367. Adam says:

Nathan in a non-save situation against the Yanks. I bet this gets interesting.

  368. Havok9120 says:

Hey, if we get a baserunner, all the people clamoring for Granderson to bat cleanup might get their wish.

  369. Heisenberg's Hat says:

Winning 3 of 4 is still pretty freaking awesome.
    Man, I hate Texas.

  370. Tom says:

I wanted to see Rapada swing the bat… he’s reportedly got “sneaky” power

  371. The Real Greg says:

    Bottom line:

The Rangers were due for an offensive explosion. Its actually pretty good to know that our B lineup for the most part pushed them and scored 6 runs

  372. Rooting for U.S. Steel says:

And oddly enough, Nova emerges from today with one of the best game lines of any of the Yankee pitchers.

No, this one really wasn’t meant to be. On to the next.

  373. stuart a says:

L to the pen today. across the board bad bad effort by the pen. Joba is not there yet.. THe lefties are so inconsistent is a laughable….

cano is a horrible baserunner BTW…lazy, slow, and stupid.. besides that he has good baserunning instincts….

good effort by swishy on his last AB….

overall sloppy game, they could have won but did not make the plays the last 3 innings……

  374. Jose M. Vazquez says:

We are vulnerable to left handed pitching especially with a lineup like today’s where we had Jones hitting fourth and Martin as the DH. Even though these players put up a good fight there is no doubt that the left handed platoon is much superior to the right. I would much rather see Granderson and Cano in there than Jones even though he hit a homer. He just does not hit enough to convince me he should be in there. As soon as I saw the lineup I knew that we were probably going to lose.

  375. Darren says:

fucking fuck. nice lineup Girardi. If I was george and I was alive I would fire cahsman, girardi and thomson after that game. if russel .196 martin is your DH then you REALLY fucked up.

btw, jim beam seats are awesome. grey goose tonic ftw
