Game 130: A Happy Day

By

(Mike Stobe/Getty)

It’s a gorgeous day for a baseball game in New York, and the Yankees have to be feeling a bit better about how things are going after last night’s win over the Blue Jays. They’ve got a chance to win the series today — it would be their second straight series win — and as I always say, off-days always feel so much better coming off a win. Let’s hope Thursday’s a great off-day. Here’s the lineup…

SS Derek Jeter
1B Nick Swisher
2B Robinson Cano
RF Andruw Jones
CF Curtis Granderson
DH Steve Pearce
3B Jayson Nix
LF Ichiro Suzuki
Chris Stewart

LHP CC Sabathia

This afternoon’s game is scheduled to start at 1:05pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy.

hello again my friends. after the hangover of the red sox dodgers blog blaster trade i started thinking. first i realized that big trades can happen if a players is on whaffle vaivers and since red sox traded thier 3 bestest players all players in the game are on the whaffle vaivers. hm said big member if its so easy to get good players like beckett shouldt yankees trade? and i looked at our team. big member gathered a lot of data and found out that right now our bggest hole is 1b.
wow big member are you silly we havemark texera you may say. well i bring you the news that mark texera is injured. that is very bad news. mark is a good defender. remember mondays game? when swisher coldnt catch the ball when lowes tried to pick of the runer? texera makes that play with his eyes closed.

i looked and looked for a good replacemtn for him and i found a very god player a payer so good he has been top 10 in mvp voting in every year. for the last 6 years. he has won the rookie of the year and the mvp. in back to back years . a real slugger. a masher. ladies and gentlemens may i entroduce……ryan haward

why oh why would phillies trade their slugger big member? that’s becasue they suck. cliff lee is one f the worse pitchers in game. he he has 3 wins. how many wins does roy halladay have? 0. you know your team is in trouble when your number 1 and 2 starters have 3 wins combined. and i have the perfect guy to trade for him. the guy who if traded will have he second highest win total for the fihghting phills. that man is ivan nova.

nova has been so so this year. even tho he has 11 wins he has a era of alsomst 5. haward however would be our clean up hiter. he can easily hit 50 bombs in yankee stadium. he is under contrct untl 2016. we can esily move him to LF when tex comes back.

    • Anthony

      A+

    • jjyank

Best work yet, IMO. Where is this man’s guest post?

    • Get Phelps Up

      You are the best.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Meh…I feel like your slipping BM. You’ve been gone for almost a week, and this is what you come back with? C+. I thought about a C-, but that would’ve been too harsh. You’re better than this though. At first it looked natural, now it looks like you’re forcing it a little bit.

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Yeah, the spelling errors and run-on sentences are attempting to pass off as blatantly illiterate, but yet knows detailed history of Howard’s award standings – doesn’t jibe.

        Poor effort

    • Jim Is Bored

      Starting to try too hard.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Glad I’m not the only one who noticed.

      • Alkaline

Yeah, the first few times you didn’t know if he was serious or not. Now it’s just obvious trolling.

    • Robinson Tilapia

I’m so glad I’m here today. I want to be put on waffle waivers too…..with maple syrup!

  • Samwise Eddard

Today should be a big day for Andruw and Curtis. They are due for a breakout game and they have Pearce protecting them. CC needs to get deep into the ballgame if not finish it himself.

    • jjyank

Okay, now I’m convinced that even you can’t possibly believe your own words.

      • Sweet Dick Willie

        Trolls usually don’t.

      • http://twitter.com/stumpwoodley Bunt Gardner

I think someone has picked up Eddard’s handle.

    • Todd

      Pearce??!!! Good God…

  • DERP

Joe Mauer is on waivers. Should the Yankees claim him?

    • The Real Greg

      If he gets to them.

    • Samwise Eddard

The Dodgers have already claimed him and offered him a 15 year, $350 million extension.

      • Jim Is Bored

If I hear another variation on this joke I’m going to cry.

        *Cue more dodgers+mauer+lotso’money jokes.

    • Get Phelps Up

      No way with that contract.

    • blake

Yes….just to see Hal freak out.

  • Mandy Stankiewicz

good post, but i think doc is 8-7.

  • The Real Greg

Honestly i would rather have Nix bat cleanup. I am up to here with Andruw Jones.

    • Get Phelps Up

I’d rather go for the kill and hit Chris Stewart cleanup.

  • Brian S.

So what are we going to call Phil Hughes’ cutter-slider? Slutter?

    • jjyank

Phil and his nasty slutter. I like it.

    • Robinson Tilapia

      +1,000,000

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

The Yankees are going to win today. I feel it in my bones, because for the first day this week, nothing shitty as happened to me yet, and it’s almost 1pm, and I’ve had a very productive day so far, leading for the opportunity for bad things to happen.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Plus Big Member’s back, and WSR is trading at over 13 for the first time since their most recent secondary offering. Now if Ford could get back over 9.5 I’d be happier than a pig in shit.

    • jjyank

Luck you. I’m running this bank with 4 people total, including myself (thanks to a combination of vacations, peolpe out sick, and meetings). Plus I have to fill the ATM on Wednesdays, which means manually counting about $115,000.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

That must be the most depressing thing ever…counting all that money that’s not for you. Definitely the biggest reason I could never work in a bank, I get sad counting the ~$1000 dollars in the draw here at the end of the day, knowing it’s not mine.

        • jjyank

Meh, after a little while you kinda just start viewing money like a waiter views food.

          • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

You mean with an “ugh, if I have to look at that god damn skirt steak again I’m going to be sick?”

            • jjyank

Pretty much. I feel like I’m at work when I’m counting money out of my own wallet when I’m at store.

              • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Lol, outside of paying for a bus pass and buying a new wallet today, I don’t remember the last time I used cash. Debit/credit cards are so much easier.

Btw: In and out of the New Jersey DMV in under an hour today!! I was so proud of myself.

                • jjyank

Haha congrats. I use cash if I’m going to a bar or something with people, easier to divy up the tabs that way. But otherwise, yeah, I use my cards. Still.

                  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

That is true, see I’m more a smoker than a drinker, as are most of my friends. We’re much more likely to hang out at somebody’s house and burn than go out and spend money at bars (it’s sooo much cheaper.)

                    • jjyank

I agree, but the grown up world prefers both drinking and bars, unfortunately :P

                    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Lol, the grown up world has no need to know what I do behind closed doors =P

      • Darren

yo i’ll count that shit for you. lemme see it for a second?

      • Robinson Tilapia

        I’m home sick!

  • Alkaline

I feel like CC is going to dominate today. Same with with offense. Calling a win by 7+ runs.

  • Luisergi

Fucking day, middle of the week, games!
    Stuck at the Fucking office!

Hoping for the good fellas of RAB to keep me informed.

    • jjyank

      You and me both, brother.

      • Luisergi

        It sucks doesn’t it??

I wish i was still a kid, i’d be out of school right now on my way to watch the game.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Welcome to my life, I hope you guys are at least allowed to listen to it on the radio/computer/smart phone.

      • Luisergi

My phone went down!! (fucking pool parties)

And everything, potentially entertaining, is blocked on my work computer, even blogs, i don’t know how i’m able to read RAB (thank God anyway).

        So yeah it sucks.

        • JohnC

At least the Oriole series is on a weekend, so you won’t miss those games

          • Luisergi

            I sure won’t
I just miss day-games played monday trough friday.

            • JohnC

Well, this Monday is a day game in Tampa Bay, but fortunately its Labor Day so you get to see it!!!

              • Luisergi

                Shiiiiiiiit!!!! forgot about that!!!
Not Labor day in México buddy…
                :(

      • jjyank

I get crappy service in here, the best I can do is Gameday on my phone, and RAB (obviously).

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Damn, at least I get the docile tones of John and Suzyn.

    • BaltimoreYankee

You work at a fucking office? Nice. I only get blown in mine.

      • Luisergi

HAHA Believe it or not, It actually seems that way sometimes.

  • CUYanks

Beautiful 1 pitch out. Keep that pitch count down!

  • Brian S.

Anyone else read about FDP on fangraphs today?

  • Darren

Suzyn just made about 4 mistakes within her first 30 seconds on the air. Maybe she was up late partying?

BTW, Roy White was on Boomer & Carton this morning. I love that man, what a cool dude.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

awww…damn, what were they? I was outside having a smoke before the game started.

      • Darren

nothing major but they were literally one after the other…:

        (1) “Paul Cottier with the salute to America, sorry, salute to Amercans” (2) “tonight’s, I mean TODAY’s starting line-up” (3) “Ed Hickox, the starting third baseman, I mean, third base UMPIRE”
then she tried to throw it to Sterling but she called him “old man shriveled nuts”

Ok, only 3 of those actually happened.

        • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

          I’m guessing 1, 3 and 4 happened.

and then John replied “Thank you, Dusty Vag”

          • Darren

i lol’d! nice one. wasn;’t Dusty Vag an excellent pinch hitter back in the day?

    • TomH

How many have you made today?

      • Darren

        Zero.

By the way, was Suzyn respectful to you and her mother growing up, or was she sassy?

        • TomH

Let me tell you, you can be sure that at your age she wasn’t nearly so callow.

Hurt you didn’t I? Made you realize you were an asshole.

          • Darren

I’m an asshole for pointing out that Suzyn made a bunch of mistakes?

Listen, I like her personal take on the players and how she defends them, but she is a horrible, horrible broadcaster in so many ways. She has no sense of timing with John, she butchers things constantly and her voice isn’t exactly mellifluous. Anyway, in case it wasn’t clear, I was taking your extreme sensitivity to my original post and joking around that you must be her Dad, because no one else would have gotten so easily offended by an innocuous comment. I’m sorry if you took it another way.

  • Cy Pettitte

    defensive clinic this inning

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Breaking it out early today: Chris Stewart: DEFENSIVE CATCHER

  • CUYanks

Nice 9-pitch inning, even with the error. Looks like CC is attacking the strike zone today.

  • The Real Greg

Still very efficient from CC. Under 10 pitches

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Yankees need CC to go deep today.
Good to see the Blue Jays seem willing to cooperate.
Hopefully the defense decides to go along with the plan as well.

    • Darren

Are you ripping off my haiku stylings?

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Wow, Happ throws a little harder IRL than he does in The Show, normally I wouldn’t bring up The Show as a comparison to a real life player, but if anything the game adds a few MPH to pitchers fastballs instead of taking away.

  • Brian S.

The Jays are probably going to pick up Davis’ option aren’t they?

  • Brian S.

Gameday says two of those balls to Swisher were strikes? Confirm?

  • VCR1111

Is Gameday’s strikezone accurate at all? In that Swisher at bat, there were 6 pitches (all strikes according to gameday) but he walks.

    • Brian S.

Gameday isn’t 100% accurate. More of a ballpark estimate. But two of the strikes looked like there’s no way they could have been balls.

      • VCR1111

        Cool…thanks!

  • The Real Greg

    Cano moves the runners over.

  • Brian S.

Good job moving the runners over Bob.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Robinson: That white thing at your feet, that’s home plate. If a ball isn’t going to cross over that area, don’t swing!!

  • The Real Greg

Thank you Jones for proving me wrong.

  • DERP

    Where the haters at?

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Right here; one hit does not make a slump over.

      • JobaWockeeZ

Wow someone that’s consistent on both sides of the spectrum. Bravo.

    • Brian S.

I don’t like Druw anymore but I’m glad he got a hit.

  • Brian S.

    Attaboy Druw

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    RISPHITS!!

    • VCR1111

      Yes sir!!

  • Samwise Eddard

And that’s all CC needs to take us home. Well done by Andruw. Let’s hope they pitch around Grandy to lose the bases for Pearce.

  • Jimmy Is Key To David’s Cone

    Andruw Jones did something!

  • jjyank

    Andruw!

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Then Jones breaks up a DP..maybe I’ll have to ease up on my hating.

  • Brian S.

I’ll take the RBI groundout. The Yankees have been playing a lot of smallball lately.

    • The Real Greg

When the lineup is this riddled, that’s what they have to do.

  • Todd

Great job by Pearce protecting Curtis and Andruw!!!!

    • Samwise Eddard

It worked like a charm didn’t it? Genius move by Giradi.

      • Todd

        Indeed, Eddard, Indeed.

  • Jimmy Is Key To David’s Cone

Joe G created those runs because his intuition told him that he should bat Jones cleanup — show faith in him and he’ll respond like a veteran should. It’s great to have a manager with this much know-how and knowledge of the game, makes it possible to win a few extra games which really counts when the division gets close at the end of the season.

  • Get Phelps Up

Jeter should be on that poll.

    • Yankee Fan 1

not watching, what’s the poll question?

      • Get Phelps Up

Who had the biggest bounceback season in the AL? The choices were Morales, AJax, Dunn, and 2 other players who I can’t remember.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

But Jeter has been great since about June of last year…The real answer should be Dunn. Ajax: it’s more of a break out than a bounce back, Morales: did he even play last year after breaking his leg two years ago. Dunn: Probably the least productive player in the AL last year to a legit power threat again.

          • Yankee Fan 1

Ahh thanks. I can see Jeter in the conversation, but Dunn should probably win comeback player of the year.

  • The Real Greg

    Chris Stewart just got jeweled.

    • Cy Pettitte

hopefully Yunel knocked some defensive ability into him.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Two innings <20 pitches. CC really setting himself up to real deep into this game while our two biggest bullpen arms probably aren't available. But he's not an ace.

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Setting up to piss me off. I was hoping to fake an injury to leave work early and catch the last couple innings, but this has 2:32 written all over it.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Yeah, at this pace, there’s no way this game even sniffs 3hrs.

        • Get Phelps Up

          Which is awesome for me!

7.09 It is interference by a batter or a runner when—
    (a) After a third strike he hinders the catcher in his attempt to field the ball;

    • http://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

Rule 6.06(c) Comment: If the batter interferes with the catcher, the plate umpire shall call ?interference.? The batter is out and the ball dead. No player may advance on such interference (offensive interference) and all runners must return to the last base that was, in the judgment of the umpire, legally touched at the time of the interference.

This is what Kay referenced. This is most accurate I believe compared to 7.09 above.

      • CUYanks

Just further in 6.06 (c) If a batter strikes at a ball and misses and swings so hard he carries the bat all the way around and, in the umpire?s judgment, unintentionally hits the catcher or the ball in back of him on the backswing before the catcher has securely held the ball, it shall be called a strike only (not interference). The ball will be dead, however, and no runner shall advance on the play.

  • Robinson Tilapia

Is Happ out of the game? Poor Blue Jays.

Yankees have a serious problem when it comes to 7-8-9 issue this week it seems. Getting crucified in this area.

  • Kramerica Industries

Are you fricken kidding me with how the Jays are getting on base?

  • Robinson Tilapia

This calls for a mercy triple play.

  • Dela G

    Beautiful DP!

  • JLC 776

If there was ever a bases loaded, no out jam that I felt like we can get out of, it’s this one.

    • JLC 776

      Ha! Reverse jinx!

      • JLC 776

        Fuck!

    • Robinson Tilapia

Holy shit! CC just punched out the umpire! Mariano’s back!

      • http://twitter.com/erica_lynnnn Erica

  • Dela G

damn, when the hell did encarnacion get so good? Man he’s stepped up since he got traded to toronto

  • Robinson Tilapia

Argh. Could have been worse with encarnacion, I guess. Still a bunch of dinky dunk bullshit.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Nothing pisses me off more than getting beaten by dinky hits. If you’re gonna beat me, beat me. Hit rockets.

Or as the Orioles’ announcer say it, “Arnca*COUGH*aslfksfion…”

  • The Real Greg

Cant blame CC. 3 dinky hits and an error

  • JLC 776

I’m gamecasting this thing – were the first two pitches not as close as they look, or is the zone getting squeezed?

    …and another two out hit.

    For fuck’s sake.

  • Darren

Where’s Scott Sanderson when you need him?

    • Robinson Tilapia

Stuck in an endless 1992 Yankee time warp?

      • Darren

Him? Probably? Me? Definitely. I’m expecting Gutterman to provide some middle relief.

        • Robinson Tilapia

Do Steve Howe’s eyes look red today?

          • Darren

            No, he’s dead.

  • The Real Greg

THat was the only hard hit ball of the inning. Bad luck for CC.

  • Robinson Tilapia

Oh fuck me in the fucking nose with this singles bullshit.

  • Dela G

my god please let this inning end

    • Robinson Tilapia

What a day for you not to get reception. Jeter is actually IN THE LINEUP as Minnie Mantlez. Nice boobs on Mantlez.

          • Robinson Tilapia

No. She said she can’t hear the game and is counting on us. I’m just telling her what happened.

Can’t believe Russell Martin got up and retired in the middle of the inning.

            • http://twitter.com/erica_lynnnn Erica

I prefer this version of the game. I’m about to rip my hair out because of this no-good job I’m at. Any version of this game is MUCH appreciated.

              • Robinson Tilapia

I’d be sitting through a three-hour administrative meeting and missing this game right now if I wasn’t home sick.

                • Darren

being home sick is worse than a meeting. feel betta. nestle crunch and some apple juice will get you better.

  • VCR1111

Awful! After getting that double play this happens…just awful.

  • Cy Pettitte

on a scale of not ace to ace: not ace.

    • The Real Greg

      WRONG.

      All the runs are unearned.

      • Cy Pettitte

so? he got 2 outs and then fell behind the next 3 batters and ended up giving up hits to all 3.

        • The Real Greg

With one true hit ball, a dinky hit and a ball just down the line.

      • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

Cool, bro, let’s just ignore that CC gave up hits to Adam Lind and Yunel Escobar.

        • Robinson Tilapia

          What’s worse:

          1) The “ace” stuff

          2) The “giving up hits to non-stars” stuff

I actually think #2 might be worse.

          • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

They’re both incredibly annoying, but I admittedly participate in #2. I threw a fit when he gave up a homerun to Elliot Johnson last year.

            • Robinson Tilapia

Yes, but self-awareness makes all the difference sometimes. You know it’s silly and are just expressing frustration at that moment in time, not a general rule that everyone should bat .000 against a good pitcher.

          • Tom Q

Everyone knows that non-stars should hit -.250 against the Yanks

    • Brian S.

      +1

      • http://twitter.com/stumpwoodley Bunt Gardner

        -1

    • Robinson Tilapia

Just no. Please god, no. I’m home sick today. None of this “ace/not ace” business. Save it for when I have my full physical faculties.

      • Jim Is Bored

        I wish.

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

These last two runs should be charged to CC.

  • Dela G

    FINALLY, the inning is over

  • The Real Greg

All of the runs are unearned. dinky hits, balls finding holes and an error.

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

Well, I’d rather start expecting a loss now then hope we pull out a win, because this offense has been a nightmare this week.

    • http://www.flickr.com/photos/roadgeek/ Roadgeek Adam

      Pardoning Monday of course.

      • Robinson Tilapia

        Greg?

  • Frank

Jays got a couple cheap hits this inning but DP took care of that. Those 3 runs are on CC- bad pitches to Encarnacion, Lind and Escobar.

  • jon

The worst part is that with this pathetic offense its gonna seem like it 13-2 and not 3-2, this lineup is so bad.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

I decided to follow the game solely by refreshing the RAB page.

It’s…..interesting. How the moods shift within seconds is pretty funny.

    • Robinson Tilapia

I hope you have proper neck support. It may cause complete whiplash once we retake the lead.

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

My eyes feel like the first time I went to see Blair Witch Project in the theater back in ’99

        • Robinson Tilapia

Much like that movie, I bet this won’t be as fun to go through the second time around.

I went by myself to that. First “feel sorry for myself and sit alone in a movie theater” moment after breaking up with a longtime ex. Of course, I’d meet my now-wife about a month after that.

  • Get Phelps Up

There was like, 1 hard hit ball that whole inning.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

      NOT AN ACE!

    • The Real Greg

Which is why I am not getting on CC for that inning.

      • Robinson Tilapia

Thank God. I wonder how it would have affected CC otherwise.

BUT WHAT WILL THE MEDIA SAY?!?!

        • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

          lololol

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

So, I’m curious…what makes CC not an ace, literally 12 hours after THE BEST PITCHER IN BASEBALL in Justin Verlander gave up 8ER against the KANSAS CITY ROYALS.

    • Robinson Tilapia

That didn’t happen. Impossible. Aces don’t ever make inferior players make contact with the bat.

Stop getting your baseball scores from MSNBC.

    • JLC 776

Just people wanting to talk themselves into jumping off of buildings… damn annoying.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

…Robbie, really? Swinging at the first pitch after a 4 pitch walk?

    • The Real Greg

Swinging at that next pitch was worse.

      • Robinson Tilapia

It didn’t get any better after that.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I love robbie. I really do. But he has basically zero plate recognition compared to even sub-par major leaguers.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

That was a rather pathetic AB.

  • Samwise Eddard

Not sure we’ll score again until we get back around to Pearce.

  • Dela G

man, happ is a fucking strikeout machine

  • cashthegenius

Our Big guys make their scrub pitcher look like CY Young, their Scrubs make our Ace look like a number 5

    • CUYanks

      Cy Young with 2 er’s in < 3 innings?

      • Need Pitching & Hitting

Cy Young has a 12.00 ERA so far today.

    • Robinson Tilapia

….and you make stuart sound positive.

  • JLC 776

Seriously, how small is the strike zone today? Gamecast is making everything looks like called balls right on the edge of the zone.

  • Samwise Eddard

Now walk Granderson to set up Pearce with the bases jacked.

    • JLC 776

You know Pearce is awesome because he batted cleanup yesterday….

    The Grandy Man!

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    Thank You Rajai!!!

  • Samwise Eddard

Pearce knocked that run in by instilling fear from the on deck circle! What a genius Girardi is today.

    • Get Phelps Up

Rajai Davis wanted so badly to see Pearce bat that he purposely misplayed that ball.

  • CUYanks

Jack Curry really should be more involved on YES telecasts.

  • The Real Greg

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

That wasn’t luck. That was a really shitty play by Davis.

      • The Real Greg

  • Kramerica Industries

Oh motherfucker, I was guessing Jimmy Key on that trivia question.

    Drafted by Toronto.

    Drafted in 1982.

Won a World Series with the Yankees.

BUT, he was NOT drafted 30th overall. So close.

    • The Real Greg

      Gotta be Boomer

    • Steve T

      Isn’t it Cecil?

      • Steve T

Nope, it’s Boomer. Cecil was drafted by KC in 1982, but made debut with Jays. My bad.

    • Kramerica Industries

      Well, Kay agreed with me.

I’m wondering if that should scare me a bit.

  • Athenian

The Yankees have so many mid and low .200 hitters it makes one think they are looking at an Oakland A’s line up from 2-3 years ago.

Never thought .250 or lower would be an acceptable batting ave in the majors. Somewhere Mario Mendoza is eying a comeback and a batting title.

    • Robinson Tilapia

Injuries will do that. You can’t be three deep everywhere.

Just get healthy before October and hold the other teams back in September.

      • Athenian

No kidding. Looking at Toronto is well actually looking a AAA team. So bad example there.

    • The Real Greg

Adam Dunn, Jared Saltalamacchia, Ike Davis…

      need I go on?

      • Need Pitching & Hitting

        Need I go on?

      • Athenian

So your saying they are the standard? I just read it as over rated, suck and why are you in the majors.

    • Brian S.

Batting average doesn’t mean much if you make up for it in other areas. Curtis Granderson is still an above average hitter because of his OBP/SLG., even though he doesn’t actually get hits that often.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

all he sees is “Blah blah blah numbers blah blah blah” and thinks “no, batting average is easy to understand so it’s all I care about.”

Seriously? It was an observation. Good grief, not some absurd attempt to explain the complexities of time and space.

I get the need to pounce on my comments like a schoolyard bully but seriously, it was just a comment.

          • Bunt Gardner

Your comments are jumped on because the always come off as whiny and negative.

            • Robinson Tilapia

Athenian’s been a bit more negative as of late, but it was a good month or so where I thought their comments were more middle-of-the-road.

              • Bunt Gardner

True…they did have a decent stretch for a while.

            • Athenian

Negative is such an ugly word. Actually it is the opposite, expect the worse, get confirmed results, feel better that you didn’t waste time believing in something that won’t happen.

as for the whiny, that is only because I talk though my nose with a deep NY accent – can’t be helped.

              • Bunt Gardner

Can’t agree with the philosophy, but I will give you props for the “whiny” reply…lol

      • Athenian

Your right. Granderson is actually more beneficial than batting average.

  • Get Phelps Up

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

On the radio they’re talking about Pettitte doing his rehab in the majors with like 3 inning stints to start out (with Lowe or a call-up) backing him up, because they’re might not be any more minor league games.

Instead of a simulated game, don’t the Yankees have the respources to simply organize a game of Triple AAA players, independent guys, etc? W

Way better than a simulated game but don’t need to have Andy come back until he’s actually ready.

  • Jersey Joe

Does anyone think Derrek Lee could be a good idea for sept? If Tex is gone for over 2 weeks maybe Ibanez/Lee could platooon at 1B/DH. Thoughts?

    C-Martin 1B/DH-Ibanez/Chavez/Lee 2B-Cano 3B-ARod SS-Jeter LF-Ichiro/Jones CF-Grandy RF-Swisher.

Without AROD back soon McGehee isnt really needed.

    • Jersey Joe

*With ARod back Chavy could back up third

  • Tom Q

I’ve seen second basemen hold the ball a shorter time and get the out call. Obviously Jones lost it, but he held onto it quite a stretch. Does the fact it ever popped out make it automatically no catch, or is there a time factor?

  • Robinson Tilapia

For the benefit of Erica, the stuff about Jones above had to do with his trying to order a fly ball be caught through SeamlessWeb.

    • http://twitter.com/erica_lynnnn Erica

Now’s not exactly the time, but I will to reply to something, at some point, with “how dare he not go into the HOF 300-0 for his career.”

      • effthisnoise

I get it, but this line up is garbage and this is crunch time. If he can’t shut down the Jays…its gonna be tough shutting down real line ups in the post season

        • Robinson Tilapia

It’s always tough to shut down a lineup in the postseason. One start is one start. He could turn around a pitch a perfect game in five days. Will you feel the same way then?

It’s like we only seen things in a straight line sometimes.

          • effthisnoise

we are watching THIS game right? so is it ok if people comment on THIS game. dont be a tard just to be one

                This.

I laughed but everyone but Kuroda sucks even more. A lot more.

nah the extra runs last inning meant nothing.

    this team is a joke.

CC’s day is done. Bring in Lowe and see if he can keep it close.

    • Robinson Tilapia

Haven’t watched CC Sabathia much in his career have you? I’ve seen him pitch worse than this and go at least seven numerous times.

I think there’s a case that can be made that the Yankees are currently the worst team in baseball. I’m just too lazy and don’t care enough to make it . . .

    • Robinson Tilapia

They’re in first place. Can I pour you a drink?

      • The Troll

Yes, but as most of the homers on this site were so keen on saying just a few weeks ago . . . “They’re still 10 games up on the O’s and Rays” – - – Right now, as they stand, this offense is no better than the Astros or Mariners. As for CC, well . . . maybe he’s having an off year. I’ve never been one to attack the big guy.

        • Get Phelps Up

You need to watch more Mariner and Astros games.

          • The Troll

Perhaps . . . Why? Are they better than I’ve assumed?

            • Robinson Tilapia

Seattle, maybe. No reason for any sane human being to watch the Astros.

        • Robinson Tilapia

Did you really believe anyone was going to win the AL East by 10 games? I never thought so. It’s almost always a dogfight.

They’ve played .500 baseball since the ASB. That’s not good, but this would less noticeable if the Rays weren’t playing .700 ball, or whatnot. This isn’t a freefall of some sort.

This is a Yankee fansite. We’re homers. I’m certainly not apologizing for that.

  • Frank

Two leads and gave them both back. This performance has been the rule rather than the exception this season for CC.

  • The Real Greg

CC, for the most part, has been victimized by dinky hits and errors. The home run was totally on him, but for the most part bad luck has bit CC.

  • VCR1111

Weren’t the Blue Jays struggling before they came to the Bronx? Weren’t the White Sox also struggling before they played the Yankees? WTF is going on!!

    • Karl Krawfid

Yankees have been struggling against everyone.

      • The Real Greg

        Except Boston. And Seattle.

    • TomH

A parsimonious explanation for CC’s problem is not the meaningless “bad luck” but–and I hope I’m wrong–that arm problem.

      • CUYanks

7:0 k:bb indicates he probably isn’t pitching as poorly as the score suggests.

      • The Real Greg

Have you seen the hits off him today. Most are duck snorts that find holes and fall into shallow outfield

  • CUYanks

Still a very winnable game. After all, Happ’s at 100 pitches so we’re gonna get close to 4 bullpen innings.

  • The Real Greg

And another dinky hit. That’s like 5 or 6 of those type today

    • The Troll

They’re still hits. Dinky, fruity, putrid or not . . . They’re still the type of hits that the Yankees couldn’t hit for shit.

  • Karl Krawfid

CC’s horrible change up the past couple years has prevented him from being the dominate CC we saw in the 2009 playoffs.

  • DERP

Four hits this inning to guys hitting under 250. One of them a home run to a guy with an iso under 100. Pretty awful

    • VCR1111

  • Samwise Eddard

Unless CC has a dominant September, which he very well could, I would hand the ball to Kuroda for Game 1 of the playoffs. It seems like it’s a forgone conclusion CC will be the #1 but we should go with the best man and this year it’s been Hiroki.

    • CUYanks

With CC’s comfort with pitching on short rest, I want to see him starting early and as often as possible.

    • TomH

Closer to AAAA, but I take the general point

    • The Real Greg

HAve you been watching the game. A majority of the hits CC gave up were soft and found holes. I’m not blaming him for that.

“Kate Smith’s rendition of God Bless America”.

I don’t know if it’s the fact that I’ve heard that rendition HUNDREDS of times, or the fact that YES does the pathetic crowd pandering shots that you usually see all over Fox Sports networks…

But I’m quite tired of all of it.

    • The Troll

Agreed. Give me the Bieber anthem ANY day of the week. Eh.

    • Brian S.

Why don’t you go hate America someplace else.

      • Kramerica Industries

I have no reason to justify myself, since I know the intent of what I said and there’s no cure for closed-mindedness.

All I can say is, between citing the specific rendition when hundreds exist, and calling out YES for doing something I thought they were above – that is, crowd shots, which you never see during games otherwise, something that I actually really like about YES…

let’s just say that I don’t see how America actually has anything to do with this.

        • Brian S.

I was being sarcastic. I actually agree.

  • thenamestsam

One of the weirdest pitching performances I ever remember. CC completely dominating except for two innings where he gave up 9 total hits, most of which were bloops or seeing-eye.

    • The Real Greg

Thank you. Somebody decided to actually look at the game.

      • Hummingbird S.

So we should just pretend those innings never happened. It will make you feel better for sure.

      • Robinson Tilapia

I agree with the second sentence. I’ve seen games like this before, though. We’ve seen them this season, even.

        • thenamestsam

Sure you see them, but this is about as stark as I’ve ever seen the contrast. 8Ks, 0 walks, low pitch count despite all the extra batters faced, very few hard hit balls. Everything about this start has been dominating. Except his luck on balls in play and his sequencing. Basically this start is why someone came up with FIP.

  • Kramerica Industries

      Lefty ready in bullpen.

      • sangreal

mentioned on the broadcast, but you can’t change pitchers immediately after a mound visit

        • The Real Greg

That’s BS. Never heard that rule before when applied to a pitching coach. I do it all the time in 2k12.

          • sangreal

Like I said, that’s what they said on the broadcast. Quickly glancing through the rules, I can’t find anything to back it up. Actually the rules specifically say you can make a second visit to the mound (but must remove the pitcher) if a pinch-hitter is brought in

      • sangreal

also, that’s why it made no sense to send McGehee down instead of Phelps

  • Cy Pettitte

oh well, get another double and try again in the 8th. lol.

  • stuart a

risp fail today is even above normal levels for the yanks.. Cano got a hit with no one on base what a shocker….

andruw jones does nothing for this team. he had 1 huge series against Boston that was it.. the guy cannot move and he strikes out like granderson………

    the NY Platooners…….

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

      curly joe?

    • The Troll

Well, they certainly are NOT the Yankees I know.

      Agreed.

The NY Platooners. I’ll take it.

  • Robinson Tilapia

Prove to me Aaron Loup isn’t Aaron Laffey wearing a different shirt.

  • JLC 776

    Oh, Curtis… you’re something sort of… shitty.

  • Kramerica Industries

Banner performance on both sides of the ball today.

  • Athenian

I can’t stand the smell of one run losses that should be wins looming over the stadium.

    • Cy Pettitte

probably not gonna get any better this weekend. I’m anticipating 3 1-run losses.

      • Athenian

I don’t think they will be that close. Orioles are still playing decent. Yankees, um, not so much.

  • Robinson Tilapia

Someone on this board is going to actually jump off a bridge in the next two innings.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Eventually that runner has to come in to score…right?

    • Robinson Tilapia

No. Jason Nix will be standing there at 3 AM.

  • The Real Greg

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THERE ARE INJURIES PEOPLE.

The injuries have been catching up with them in this second half.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

injuries caused CC to give up 5 runs?
injuries caused the Yankees to go 2-13 wRISP?

      • The Real Greg

Yes. When your lineup is depleted this is what happens.

      • JLC 776

Well… yeah. Sort of. You didn’t really think the backup and role-players we brought onto this team that are now everyday starters would look like all-stars, did you? The RISP thing sucks and has haunted the team all year, but I don’t think the barely replacement level guys we have backing up the prime players were going to do too much.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

I agree, but a lot of that RISP fail hasn’t been the replacements. It’s been the guys who’ve been here and are supposed to be able to get the job done.

    • The Troll

No. Excuses. Period (Period). Period! PERIOD? .

      • Robinson Tilapia

        Ampersand.

        • Athenian

          that is funny!

      • The Real Greg

If the Sox can get excuses, so can we.

        • The Troll

The Sox are done with excuses. They waved the white flag and are a better team for it.

    • Athenian

I agree to a point. But this is a multi billion dollar team and to not have any serviceable replacements or call ups that can fill in is unacceptable.

You can only make excuses so long – starters aren’t injured (Freddy has held his own, Home Run Hughes has limited damage,) bullpen is a major sink hole.

The fact is that injuries have only exposed that THIS team needs all its starters because there is nothing else there. High to semi high on base percentage guys with high strike outs, inability to hit with RISP (2-13 today, think we have seen that before)and a mentality that “I must swing for the fences” is the problem.

You can’t keep blaming injuries. Isn’t it bad enough Jeter has had to step up and produce power and now feel the wrath of the every smart and brilliant Skip “Tebowmancrush” Bayless?

  • stuart a

good news the great grandy did not strike out……..

he did get the bat on the ball does that equal a run???

ja happ sucks btw……then again so does about 4 other pitchers the last 2 weeks that have schooled them…

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

      lol…7.20 ERA is schooling them

  • Hummingbird S.

yay for Granderson, back to being a shitty platoon player

  • teddy

glad to see cano get a hit

  • Rocky Road Redemption

Gotta admit, right now we look pretty fucking sad.

For fuck’s sake, this is TORONTO. Win the motherfucking series, guys.

  • Cy Pettitte

here comes Lowe to eliminate all hope of a come back

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Derek Lowe in a one run game…Steve Pearce in the line up, Andruw Jones batting clean up. If you had told me this was going to happen in June my first question would be “so how far out of first are we?”

    • Karl Krawfid

      Still time for that.

    • CUYanks

Derek Lowe is the new Sergio Mitre. Joe. Cannot. Resist.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Catch the damn ball jesus.

  • stuart a

cano with 70 rbi’s. i think that is 4th on the yanks behind texiera, grandy, and swisher… i do not think any of them have had great seasons either jsut show how unclutch cano has been..

70 rbi’s for the 3rd or 4th hitter of a team 21 games above 500.. cano is underachieving and no one acknowledges it.

ichiro with that great arm has not thrown out 1 runner yet with the yanks that i recall…

the implosion is coming another bad loss around the corner………….

  • Robinson Tilapia

I didn’t even have time to make my “See? Derek Lowe is in the game. Everything will be just fine” joke.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    Playing like dogshit FTL

  • Rocky Road Redemption

Holy fucking shit. We look completely pathetic.

  • effthisnoise

.248. 2 doubles and a homerun. Scrubs always get geeked up for the Yanks

  • teddy

hey look a bunt, 1 manager playing to win, one not so much

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

yep. 1 run down in the bottom 6th = 1 run up in the top 8th

      Exact same situation.

      • thenamestsam

It’s weird that they don’t just bunt with every batter since bunting = playing to win. Hire me as Yankees manager and I pledge to have every hitter bunt every at-bat NO MATTER WHAT. Lets get the campaign started.

  • Samwise Eddard

Well, that’ll be it. Lost 2/3 to a team so riddled by injuries that they make the Houston Astros look like a professional baseball team. Better hope the White Sox can slow the Os or the lead will be down to 2.

  • Kramerica Industries

I love how that Rasmus home run is going to be shown every game the rest of the season.

  • The Troll

All that talk about “WORST LOSS OF THE SEASON” – - – I officially nominate THIS game. Yup. They already lost. Chalk it up. The Troll doth declare the 29 4A Augustine Jays to be the WORST LOSS OF THE SEASON!

  • Karl Krawfid

    Nice 4 pitches Joe.

  • thenamestsam

Really strange pitching change. It’s not exactly like Sabathia was getting shelled, only at 99 pitches, 1 run game. All of that adds up to Derek Lowe? Don’t get this one, and I started writing that before he gave up two hits.

  • Cy Pettitte

where do I go to get my refund for having to watch this month’s worth of Yankee baseball?

  • Get Phelps Up

I hope the Rangers and White Sox go their job tonight.

    • Get Phelps Up

      *do

  • stuart a

6 hits today to go along with i think 5 hits yesterday. this team is hot at the bat……..

joba is behind a washed up 39 year old named derek lowe… this team is a wreck……

    • Get Phelps Up

I’m surprised you haven’t managed to blame Arod yet.

    • Robinson Tilapia

mike harkey has a beer gut……

my lobels roast beef sandwich is soggy….

      where is my right testicle….

      this team is a wreck

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

if arod was here, they’d be winning…

  • wow

why raise the white flag so soon?

    this team’s going nowhere.

  • The Real Greg

I dont give a shit if they lose.

THEY ARE NOT WINNING THE WORLD SERIES THIS YEAR, GOT IT?

    NEVER EXPECT IN SPORTS.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

giving stuart a a run for his money….

      • http://twitter.com/erica_lynnnn Erica

This is great. I wish they could just comment each other.

    • Cy Pettitte

are you trying to tell me that this season means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING?

      • The Real Greg

The regular season in baseball? YES.

        • Robinson Tilapia

I’d love to spend a day in your brain so that I could then run like the fucking wind.

        • http://twitter.com/erica_lynnnn Erica

If the regular season means nothing… how do you determine the teams in the playoffs?

I mean, if Eric Ortiz had it his way, the Red Sox would be in the playoffs ALL OF THE TIMES.

          • The Real Greg

Tell last year’s Cardinals that the majority of the regular season means anything.

            • http://twitter.com/erica_lynnnn Erica

Greg, half your posts don’t mean a single thing.

    • The Troll

This team was never going to win. The offense was never capable. Meh. This was bound to happen sooner or later. I’m all right with it. With the Sox most likely (OH GOD, PLEASE LET THEM BE OUT OF CONTENTION), I honestly don’t give as BIG a shit as I may’ve otherwise. I still have my Giants and the Super Bowl VICTORY. I honestly wish that the Yankees had pulled off a Dodger blockbuster. This team has lost its mojo. With all the injuries, I would’ve loved to see some fresh rookie blood. Hell, give me Pedro Ciriaco over Sebastian Pearce. I actually hate this team as is. Can I say that? I hate this team. Hmm . . . doesn’t sound right. If they lose this game, amazingly enough, I will NOT care. Ugh. I’ve been drained. THE FIRE HAS BEEN DRAINED!!!!! I feel icky now.

      • http://twitter.com/erica_lynnnn Erica

        Sebastian Pearce.

        Bwahahahahaha

Doesn’t hating the team feel STRANGE?

        • The Troll

          Honestly . . . right now . . . It feels right.

Like . . . how Batman had to assume the role of bad guy after Harvey Dent died. It’s just . . . necessary.

I hate the Yankees right now. I’M MAD AS HELL AND I’M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE!

          • http://twitter.com/erica_lynnnn Erica

                • The Troll

It’s not your fault. . . It’s not your fault.

  • JLC 776

I hate this month… and by ‘month’, I mean July 19th (or so) through all of August.

  • wow

well, at least it’s the flukey Orioles next. Surely we will sweep them, right? Right?

    • The Troll

      Wrong. WRONG! Nunca. Wrong? W-R-O-N-G.

      RIGHT?

  • stuart a

arod stinks that is a given. the guy breaks down every year and has not been good for 2 years. most people realize arod is toast.

i am trying to change peoples minds on the sweet swinging Cano. He is totally overhyped.. he is a tease…

    • The Reply Button

Did I kill your dog or something?

      • Need Pitching & Hitting

No, you’re just way too complicated for the brilliant stuart a….

      • jjyank

        lulz

    • http://twitter.com/erica_lynnnn Erica

The problem is, is that A-Rod has struck out TOO much in this game.

      • Athenian

that is because Joe made him bat left handed, with one hand. Give the guy a break.

        • http://twitter.com/erica_lynnnn Erica

Never. He needs to hit a home run in ALL OF HIS AT-BATS, otherwise… DFA the sucker.

    • Bunt Gardner

Cano wouldn’t put out for you?

    • jjyank

      why does my butt hurt……..

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

The Yankees WILL win this game.

    • Robinson Tilapia

      That’s the spirit.

    • JLC 776

More of that, please… when the hell did everybody turn into a Cubs fan?

      • Robinson Tilapia

Seriously. I’d rather come on here and read 100 posts like this and have them all be wrong than all the people trying to pretend they’re too good to actually root for the team.

  • Kramerica Industries

How in the flying fuck did he make contact?

  • Samwise Eddard

Beautiful squeeze. One team knows how to manufacture runs, one doesn’t. That’s the difference in the ballgame.

  • Karl Krawfid

Why not start the inning with Epply?

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

he’s been pretty awful for a while now

  • The Real Greg

Just not the Yankees day. Everything going the Jays way.

    • TomH

What’s particularly going the Jays’ way is the New York Yankees.

      • stuart a

they are getting hits with men in scoring position.. Oops, forgot teams are suppose to do that at some reasonable rate.

        my bad…

        • Get Phelps Up

This can’t be the real stuart.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

          throw him a parade….
          give him a 250m contract….

  • stuart a

    great bunt by mathis…

as mike axisa has said eppley has not been effective for weeks…

jeff mathis usually looks like a stud against us…..

maybe swisher and cano and granderson should work on there bunting…….

tidy clean game by the yanks. don’t worry they will comeback late they have done it all of zero times so far this year……..

    we can hope…

    • jjyank

      i ran out of tampons….

    • Get Phelps Up

stuart a should work on his bunting.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle
  • Kramerica Industries

    Hah, another double.

They’ll probably score the run now, since they’re trailing by two runs.

    • Robinson Tilapia

      I laughed.

  • Get Phelps Up

Now let’s send stuart up to bunt!

  • Cy Pettitte

Ibanez you idiot, now there’s no way they’ll score.

  • VCR1111

Let’s get some runs! C’mon Yanks!!

    • VCR1111

More runs please! Let’s go Yankees!!!

  • teddy

hey look another leadoff double, they blow this in say 8 pitches

  • http://twitter.com/erica_lynnnn Erica

    C’monnnnnnnnnn Jankees!

  • Karl Krawfid

Yankees love playing strand the runner on 2nd.

    • stuart a

they have perfected strand the runner at 2nd. this is the usual yankee tease. get close, tough ab’s, no results..

ichiro is toast, the guy cannot even bunt…chavez had his 1 hot streak like andruw did and he is back to being a old, slow, 36 year old..

2 hits an inning eppley still in the game.. joba is the new hawkins(on angels now)…

  • bobtaco

They’ll score one so they can still lose by one…

  • Buffalo Bill

Mark Carig just tweeted that Ibanez is “another runner in stranding position”. I love it.

    • http://twitter.com/erica_lynnnn Erica

HAHA. I’m going to miss him on the Yankees beat. He’s a great writer, as well as Tweeter.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

        He’s leaving after the season?

        • http://twitter.com/erica_lynnnn Erica

This is his last go-round covering the Yanks. He’s got a new gig at Newsday covering… The Shmets.

          • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

That’s terrible. I mean going from a winning atmosphere to that…

            • http://twitter.com/erica_lynnnn Erica

I know :( I can’t wait to read his Tweets about the Mets now.

    • Robinson Tilapia

Awesome. That’s how you do self-deprecating humor and still be a fan.

  • Samwise Eddard

It hit the bag! Now we have another runner on 2nd! Manufacture that run!

  • Kramerica Industries

    There’s some sorely needed luck.

    NOW, they’ll strand the double.

  • The Real Greg

    The luck turning…

  • Alkaline

Did that really just happen? Something went our way?

  • Robinson Tilapia

    Please score, Russell. Just please.

    Betty, do something.

  • stanley a.

Did the Yankees just catch a break? What is this sorcery?

  • Get Phelps Up

    Yay luck!!

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I hardly say this: PLAY FOR ONE!!!

  • teddy

    bunt please

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

how’s that working out for ya

  • thenamestsam

Should have bunted, Russell. Got to play to win. Seems so obvious to me.

  • Get Phelps Up

I hate to say it, but please bunt here.

    • thenamestsam

So that we can tie a game in which we’ve already used 3 relief pitchers and our two best relievers may be unavailable? Why play for one run here?

      • Rocky Road Redemption

Because we’re having trouble scoring ANY runs right now.

        • thenamestsam

That’s not really an argument for bunting. Either way you need a minimum of 2 more runs to win this game.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

This is going to sound harsh but if Ichiro cant get the bunt down I will hate him forever.

  • Robinson Tilapia

I’m taking my son for a walk.

    Just fucking win, baby.

  • Cy Pettitte

Ichiro can’t even lay down a bunt, you gotta be fucking kidding me

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Ichiro’s a terrible bunter. Everyone just assumed he was good at it because of the type of player he is. There was a far better chance of him advancing the runner (or, gasp, driving him in) on a ground ball to the right side.

  • http://twitter.com/erica_lynnnn Erica

    WHAT HAPPENED

    • Robinson Tilapia

      Lobsters. Big and angry ones.

      • http://twitter.com/erica_lynnnn Erica

        Noms

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Lead off double, double off the bag by Martin to score the run, Ichiro couldn’t get the runner over (so fuck him) and now Martin’s on second with one out. You’re baseball boyfriend (chavez) is up.

      By myself? Total 180.

      • Rocky Road Redemption

        Exactly.

  • The Real Greg

Another bad break. That falls for the Jays .

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

shitty AB isn’t a bad break, it’s a shitty AB

      • The Real Greg

        WRONG.

Shitty ABs can lead to hits.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

which would be a good break
It’s not a bad break when a shitty AB leads to bad results. It’s expected.

  • Cy Pettitte

Chavez just got unlucky that Lyon threw him a slider.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Dammit to hell Chavy.

I miss the guy who could hit. Unreal – Martin hasn’t even moved from 2nd.

Jeter was just unlucky, would have been a HR if the wall was moved in 30 feet

  • Rocky Road Redemption

Why, I’m shocked, shocked that the Yankees stranded that runner. I never would have believed it possible.

  • Samwise Eddard

Is this a preview of October? If we get to October which isn’t a given at this rate.

  • stanley a.

How many more times are the Yankees going to strand the tying run in scoring position?

    • thenamestsam

Maximum of 1. Math is fun.

  • oldmanalex

this team can’t bunt. can’t hit with RISP, can’t steal base and can’t play solid defense. a bunch of glorified homerun hitters who don’t need to get back to the fundamentals of baseball.

  • teddy

jays will win because there guys know how to play the game.

      DRob definitely unavailable
Soriano was warming up, but won’t be used if they’re still trailing

      • Mike N

I like using the closer when available in the top of the ninth of a one-run game. I dunno the stats, but I think of this as like going for it on fourth down instead of punting. And the stats are that football coaches should be going for it a lot more on fourth down and punting a lot less.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

I’d be fine with it if he didn’t pitch the last 3 games. Considering the likelihood of the Yankees coming back, I’d rather he rest up for the weekend.

  • stuart a

wow. cannot play any worse. 3 errors.

traling after 8 0 of 46.. only 1 in baseball.. that is sad..

don’t worry they have nicky and cano up next inning…i feel a lot better knowing those 2 studs are coming up….cano i am especially confident that he has the ability to get a big hit. he is on pace for almost 90 rbi’s this year, he is great. a true superstar on his way to cooperstown…afterall ask michael kay and suzyn w how great his swing is…..

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

      Greg?

    • the piss in stuart a’s cereal

      it’s all my fault…

  • VCR1111

Wishing, hoping, praying, begging for a walk off!

  • Rocky Road Redemption

Bad luck guys. If Jeter had just gotten the bat to hit the center of the ball then the runner would have gotten lucky and scored.

    (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

  • Rocky Road Redemption

Prediction: Toronto will score at least one run this inning, and the Yankees will score in the bottom of the ninth but one run short of tying the game.

  • Cy Pettitte

nice to see Joba is, in fact, still alive.

    • Mike N

      Just not on the mound.

  • Kramerica Industries

Nothing like the LOOGY walking the only guy he’ll face.

After a 1-2 count, no less.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    nice job Loogy
Joba coming in, what could possibly go wrong?

  • Cy Pettitte

    Girardi violating the Joba rules

  • Athenian

    This is a funny game.

Um Joe, your bullpen is tired and dysfunctional. The only thing a pitching change does is get you exercise from walking back and forth to the mound – which lately makes you look like an expecting father pacing.

  • Rocky Road Redemption

Wow, hate to join the trolls, but right now the team we’re putting out on the field really does suck.

    • The Troll

You’re not trolling when you see things as they’re meant to be seen. You’re being objective for a change. Embrace it. Love it. Learn to like it.

      • Rocky Road Redemption

I’ve never not tried to be objective, and I still think we win the division. Just that the team we’re putting on the field right now isn’t going to cut it.

  • JLC 776

We need at least one come-from-behind, walk-off win… let’s make it today. I want some fucking pie already.

  • stuart a

rapada walks a ton of batters. shoup has walked 1, in less innings but 1….

rapada did not do his job, that is a common theme….

  • The Troll

Didn’t the Yankees used to have one of the best bullpens in the game? Wait . . . didn’t the Yankees used to be good? Oh. I get it now. The SWB Yankees have found their new stadium. So happy for those guys!

  • Athenian

And there is the white flag by Joe.

  • Bubba

Now the defense is offensive as well.

  • Rocky Road Redemption

Oh Joba. How I wish I had any confidence in you whatsoever.

  • Cy Pettitte

lol at Andruw Jones. are you fucking kidding me.

  • Kramerica Industries

    And that’s the ballgame.

    Fuck me sideways.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Andruw Jones is awful at baseball.

  • Rocky Road Redemption

    So, we lost.

This team sucks right now. Hurry back A-Rod and Andy.

  • Karl Krawfid

Holy shit what a bad route by Jones lol

  • cjc

this team is an utter disgrace

  • stuart a

andruw is having a great day..

the predictions that they will lose by 1 are off since jones cannot move his fat ass……

  • Athenian

LOL!!! Seriously, is this a real game or exhibition?

  • Mike N

    Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck.

  • teddy

    lol

  • Kramerica Industries

    “Infield in”

Like it even matters anymore. How the fuck do the Yankees only go 3-3 against two teams that won, like, a combined 10 games out of 50? THAT is where division titles are won and lost.

  • Cy Pettitte

it’s too bad they aren’t driving to Camden this weekend, we might have gotten lucky with the team bus driving off a cliff.

  • Bubba

There is a hefty woman singing. Hopefully it’s just for this game.

  • CUYanks

Joba really has to finish this inning now. There is no one left but Soriano.

  • Samwise Eddard

I expect to see one of Mike’s first posts tomorrow be titled “Joba sent down to AAA.”

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

      not a chance

    • stuart a

ANdruw jones should have caught the ball, the guy cannot move….

  • Mandy Stankiewicz

Andruw is done as a player.

  • mick taylor

adnruw jones fans unite. the load of crap can’t get a clutch hit , can’t field

  • Rocky Road Redemption

Maybe we should start attempting to play bad, that way the opposite will happen and we’ll play well! It worked for George Costanza!

    • http://twitter.com/erica_lynnnn Erica

      When in doubt… SEINFELD.

      • Kramerica Industries

I’ll be sure to watch that at 2:00-3:00 this morning.

TBS is actually in the middle of season 4, which is Seinfeld at it’s absolute best, as far as I’m concerned.

        • http://twitter.com/erica_lynnnn Erica

I never watched the seasons in order, so I’m not entirely sure – which eps were Season 4? (I usually catch the 11pm showing on WPIX, or whatever it’s called these days.)

(Sorry Mike – Seinfeld is a happy thing, the Yankees are not right now.)

          • Kramerica Industries

The season that loosely revolves around George and Jerry writing a pilot for NBC.

Umm…last night were the bubble boy and Kramer Cuban cigar episodes…tonight are the opera episodes (Crazy Joe Devola) and the episode with Daphne Moon Jane Leeves – the virgin.

  • The Troll

Mike, Anyone – Is this not the worst baseball you’ve seen the Yankees play in quite some time? Believe it or not, but I rather be a Red Sox right now. AHHHHHH! OMG. This season has killed me! My heart has shrunk THREE sizes!

    • The Troll

      Red Sox *fan*

  • bobtaco

They’ll be lucky if it isn’t 13-5 when this is all over…

  • DT

I hate Girardi. He has a knack for making winnable games into blow outs. What a fucking turd.

    • http://twitter.com/erica_lynnnn Erica

      You mean “Giradri”

    • jjyank

I’m not watchining the game, but aren’t D-Rob and Soruiano unavailable? Who was Girardi supposed to put it?

      • rek4gehrig

I think the real question is why did Joe has to use so many pitchers in this game?

      • DT

How bout not Derek lowe in the 8th with a 1 run game? Or his constant mixing and matching. Also with a man on second, and a right hander pitching he decides to stay with a really bad Andruw Jones…

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

Lowe sucks, but the other available options were Eppley and Joba, who both have sucked just as much as Lowe.

          • DT

CC could have pitched the 8th. Or have Logan do it. Both are still better than Lowe at least.

            • Need Pitching & Hitting

yeah, I didn’t realize CC’s pitch count was that low. He absolutely should have started the 8th.
The whole situation just makes the problem of only having 2 strong relievers more glaring.

        • jjyank

Not really any better options…but I guess that’s because Girardi is just a “turd”.

  • Kramerica Industries

Didn’t even realize how absurd the Yankees numbers were.

    3-17 with RISP. Laughable.

  • Haywood Jablowmy

    Jones is done
Cashman needs to find us a rh power hitting outfielder.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

I hear Shelley Duncan is available.

  • jon

Ugh…this teams sucks right now: 3 errors, ACEFAIL, RISPFAIL, did I miss anything?

    • mt

      DEFENSEFAIL

      • mt

        RELIEVERFAIL

  • Alkaline

Is this real life, or just fantasy?

  • wow

it’s nice to actually see a team take advantage of RISP.

  • Tom

When Lowe is the first man out of the bullpen in a 1 run game in the 8th inning a team has problems.

I realize Robertson is unavailable, but why bring in the long man, use him for 2 batters and then start going L-R-L-R? had they comeback to tie it who’s pitching in extras? Joba, soriano? Then Swisher?

He did that same crap with Qualls… apparently when you have the platoon advantage the quality of the pitcher is irrelevant

    • CUYanks

I agree with this sentiment. I understand Joe wants to use his best relievers in leverage situations, but he tends to put his worth reliever in in close games trailing.

    • stanley a.

CC was only at 99 pitches when he was taken out. GIRARDIFAIL

      • DT

Aside from that homerun, CC was just being hit by a ton of dinky singles and defensive lapses. He easily could have given up 8 without much trouble.

  • Athenian

At least they went down like Champions, fighting.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    So….
Shitty Hitting + Shitty Defense + Shitty Pitching =/= Winning

Hopefully the Yankees start trying a different formula against the O’s.

  • http://www.yankeenumbers.com Mr. Sparkle

6-5 against one of the most beaten up and worst teams in the league. Now, losing 2 of 3 AT HOME to that same awful team…in a pennant race. Not to mention losing with the (supposed) ace on the mound.

When the Yankees don’t make the playoffs or get in the wild-card play-in, this is the crap everyone should remember.

  • Reverse Mormon

This team is flat out bad right now. Really, what’s the point of even making the playoffs? They are so flawed in so many areas there is minimal chance they even get out of the first round.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Shameful.

They deserve a good tarring and feathering after this shitastic display. Way to waste six games against two awful ballclubs, Yankees.

  • The Troll

This team could not look any more like toast. Honestly, I think they’re done. The playoffs seem extraordinarily unlikely at this point. Would this collapse be considered more epic than the ’11 RS?

    • DT

First off how is it unlikey when they are still in first? Eventually the team will get healthy. They look like shit now because they are basically playing with half a team. Also the ’11 Red Sox had a 9 game lead in September before blowing it.

      • The Troll

Rate of play . . . Two more weeks of this . . . They’ll be out of contention. How or why should they play any better before the REAL players return? Fuck the cavalry. Actually, I take that back. Any one is better than Jones, Ibanez, Martin and Stewart. I’ll take half the AAA lineup over the retirees they have on the field every day.

        • DT

Well due to the second wild card they basically have to lose every game for the next 2 weeks to get out of contention. I mean logically speaking that’s unlikely, even with the current rate of play. Orioles and Tampa have to play each other 6 more times too.

          • The Troll

But if one month is enough for the Sox to collapse after a 9 game lead, then why is everyone suddenly so confident in 3-5 games?

            • DT

Because the Red Sox ended up basically losing almost every game in september. That is a rare occurrence even among bad teams. You act as if this is the first time the Yanks were ever in a close pennant race this late in the season.

    • Mandy Stankiewicz

If they continue to go .500 they will not miss the play offs, so, no.
And can we all stop using the word collapse for every loss.

  • stuart a

    lok at the lineup today.

    a 38 yr old SS
swisher a good far from great player
a overhped huge strike zone unclutch pretty swing 2b
a old, slow, fat, swing from the heels rf
a AAAA player who has good #’s against lefties.

    and on and on..

this team needs a total remodel…they are old, slow, platoon crazy team…

they have 2 very good guys in the pen and then bubble gum…

cano sucks.. 70 rbi’s batting 4th for the team 4th in baseball in runs scored……………….

    • FIPster Doofus

The 38-year-old shortstop leads the league in hits. His age is irrelevant to his production this year.

      • stuart a

my point is the guy is 38 playing out of his mind but it will end sooner then later…

    • DT

I see without Arod, you’re on the Cano sucks bandwagon.

    • jjyank

      “a 38 yr old SS
swisher a good far from great player
a overhped huge strike zone unclutch pretty swing 2b”

You realize those guys aren’t even close to the biggest problems, right?

      • stuart a

i do understand but swisher is not a great player and people think differently.

cano is the biggest problem, then grandy, and then non existent catcher production…

        cano is 29 and underachieving….

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone call Swisher a great player.
I like how you keep making up shit to argue against.

        • jjyank

You think Cano is the biggest problem the team has? You’re freaking nuts.

How about A-Rod’s injury, Tex’s injury, Pettitte’s injury, Nova’s suckiness/injury, the bullpen turning back into pumpkin, Martin/Stewart being so bad, and probably several other things slipping my mind?

        • DT

.900+ OPS is underachieving? He had a bad game. Move on.

  • Haywood Jablowmy

Cashman needs to go see hal and get the few pieces they need to win 28. Tex and arod down and no relief in sight.

  • dkidd

they’re hard to watch right now, but i”m looking forward to the fan confidence poll if we get swept by the o’s

    not a happy day

  • mt

Hopefully O’s can lose 1 of next 2 before getting to NYC getting loss column back to 3 – ChisSox start a rookie tonight so it might not be until tomorrow -

If O’s win next 2 against White Sox, they will come in to NYC on a six game winning streak.

I personally think they are a bigger threat than Tampa Bay because Rays offense can always disappear at any time like it has in last 4 games – O’s must have so much confidence being outscored overall in run differential but being 24-6 in one run games winning 13 straight – also they have no pressure – nobody expected this. Also they have done really well in Yankee Stadium the last eight or so games. They will keep going until somebody tells them to stop.

    • dkidd

      stop, orioles!

    • Kramerica Industries

No way are the O’s a bigger threat. The O’s are smoke and mirrors all the way, they’ve just mastered the art in a fit of lunacy.

They’re a -39 RD team 128 games through. It’s far too late for their luck to average out on them, but they’re still ripe for the picking in a short playoff series.

They aren’t the MLB equivalent of the 2011 New York Giants, who actually underachieved to be a -6 point differential team.

      • DT

It might not even out this year, but i fully expect them be to be a 4th/3rd place team next year. It’s like that Dback team from way back where they somehow won the division with a negative run diff and ended up back to mediocre next year.

        • Kramerica Industries

          Exactly.

I’ll even be generous and say they would deserve a ~.500 record with how they’ve played this year, but long term, they’re still probably the worst off in the division.

This has to be 15 years of insanity finally rewarding the O’s.

  • stuart a

the O’s are in this with lou ford and the bum from the pirates in the lineup. a 20 year old SS, with andino or someone else at 2b and a starting staff of who knows.. the yanks cannot comeback late and stink in close games….that is a huge issue. they are having trouble in tight games because they are homer happy and terrible with risp…….

    • DT

They scored 6 runs this game without a homerun.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

Yankees have won 8 games when trailing after the 7th inning.
Rays have won 7 games when trailing after the 7th inning.
Orioles have won 8 games when trailing after the 7th inning.

      • DT

Yea but it’s after the 8th that only mattered duh.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

          I forgot the 8th inning isn’t late.

  • Samwise Eddard

Here’s what needs to happen in order to turn things around-

    1. Joba needs to be on the first bus to AAA.

    2. Andruw Jones cannot play the field ever again.

    3. Cashman needs to go down to the clubhouse and fire the guys up like he did in 09. Where were Jeter, Swish, and Cano with men on base? They need a wakeup call.

    4. It needs to be made known to CC Sabathia that he is not automatically a #1 starter in the playoffs. He has to earn it. If it were me, I’d give the ball to Hiroki.

    • http://andyisking.com Andruw Jones Smile

Samwise, how dare you say I cannot play the field, I can play the field and always make sure the other team gets an extra base and hopefully an extra run. SMILE! Also love when I can get hit cleanup with the putrid numbers I put up. SMILE

Some say I’m the equivalent of watching a blood letting, but I say SMILE, and enjoy the show!

    • JonS

Hiroki HAS to get the ball as a the #1.

    • http://www.yankeenumbers.com Mr. Sparkle

I don’t think any kind of wake-up call is going to help this team. No amount of pep talks is going to fix the numerous problems this team has. It’s something that’s been building all season. Think about it. They’ve had one hot streak surrounded by a lot of mediocre baseball on both sides of that streak. Maybe the hot streak was a flaw and this, right now, is what this team is…mediocre.

As for the #1 starter. If this team somehow still makes the playoffs in any form, I guarantee that if both Sabathia and Kuroda were rested and ready to go, Girardi will go with Sabathia. He manages by rote and there’s no reason to think he’d do otherwise in that case. He’ll go out and say something like, “This is what we brought him here for…to pitch in big games. He’s our ace and I’d take him over anyone else in the league in any game you absolutely have to win.”

      • JohnnyC

Same difference. In 2 starts in the NLCS in 08 & 09, Kuroda has a 9.82 ERA. He’s not exactly Jack Morris.

    • Bunt Gardner

They were doing well until you started commenting. Maybe you’re a jinx.

  • http://andyisking.com Andruw Jones Smile

Hi guys–it’s Andruw Jones smile. Nothing like a nice day out in the park and popping up pitches (Chris Stewart is my twin in this area of expertise), striking out, and misplaying balls. That’s what I bring to a team. Maybe if the GM wasn’t busy trying to cover up his whore mongering in the offseason-he’d have done something to prevent this–but nevertheless I’m back in Bronx and sabotaging the team. SMILE!

    • JohnnyC

Wasn’t it just two days ago Girardi said, sure Andruw’s lost a step in the outfield but he gets real good jumps? Hoo boy.

  • rogue

Losing 2/3 to the Jays at home will be reflected in the Confidence Poll.

    • Bunt Gardner

Yeah, I’m worried about your vote, Skippy.

  • Samcro first nine

This team needs some new blood

    • RBC

I’ve been saying this for the past two years, but too many people still want to drink that big money contract kool aid.

  • Hummingbird S.

If Girardi insists on using the same toys, they need to be taken away. It’s time to release Jones, Rapada and Eppley.

    • JohnnyC

Those are the toys Cashman bought him. What else can he do? Tell the little man upstairs to paraphrase Goose Gossage.

    • RBC

They’re decent pitchers but they’re all OOGYs. We need pitchers that can last an inning.

  • dalelama

It has been obvious from the beginning of the season to those willing to notice that this particular Yankee team lacks heart and the fire in the belly. With absolutely nothing in the farm system the immediate future does not look bright. 4 to 5 more years before we are back on top. The stench of the Arod contract is going to last a long time.

    • RBC

Teixiera’s contract is just as bad. At least we’ll see A-rod hit 700 HRs when its all over. CC’s contract aint so hot either.
