Game 130: A Happy Day

(Mike Stobe/Getty)

It’s a gorgeous day for a baseball game in New York, and the Yankees have to be feeling a bit better about how things are going after last night’s win over the Blue Jays. They’ve got a chance to win the series today — it would be their second straight series win — and as I always say, off-days always feel so much better coming off a win. Let’s hope Thursday’s a great off-day. Here’s the lineup…

SS Derek Jeter
1B Nick Swisher
2B Robinson Cano
RF Andruw Jones
CF Curtis Granderson
DH Steve Pearce
3B Jayson Nix
LF Ichiro Suzuki
Chris Stewart

LHP CC Sabathia

This afternoon’s game is scheduled to start at 1:05pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy.

  1. Big Member says:

hello again my friends. after the hangover of the red sox dodgers blog blaster trade i started thinking. first i realized that big trades can happen if a players is on whaffle vaivers and since red sox traded thier 3 bestest players all players in the game are on the whaffle vaivers. hm said big member if its so easy to get good players like beckett shouldt yankees trade? and i looked at our team. big member gathered a lot of data and found out that right now our bggest hole is 1b.
wow big member are you silly we havemark texera you may say. well i bring you the news that mark texera is injured. that is very bad news. mark is a good defender. remember mondays game? when swisher coldnt catch the ball when lowes tried to pick of the runer? texera makes that play with his eyes closed.

i looked and looked for a good replacemtn for him and i found a very god player a payer so good he has been top 10 in mvp voting in every year. for the last 6 years. he has won the rookie of the year and the mvp. in back to back years . a real slugger. a masher. ladies and gentlemens may i entroduce……ryan haward

why oh why would phillies trade their slugger big member? that’s becasue they suck. cliff lee is one f the worse pitchers in game. he he has 3 wins. how many wins does roy halladay have? 0. you know your team is in trouble when your number 1 and 2 starters have 3 wins combined. and i have the perfect guy to trade for him. the guy who if traded will have he second highest win total for the fihghting phills. that man is ivan nova.

nova has been so so this year. even tho he has 11 wins he has a era of alsomst 5. haward however would be our clean up hiter. he can easily hit 50 bombs in yankee stadium. he is under contrct untl 2016. we can esily move him to LF when tex comes back.

  2. Samwise Eddard says:

Today should be a big day for Andruw and Curtis. They are due for a breakout game and they have Pearce protecting them. CC needs to get deep into the ballgame if not finish it himself.

  3. DERP says:

Joe Mauer is on waivers. Should the Yankees claim him?

  4. Mandy Stankiewicz says:

good post, but i think doc is 8-7.

  5. The Real Greg says:

Honestly i would rather have Nix bat cleanup. I am up to here with Andruw Jones.

  6. Brian S. says:

So what are we going to call Phil Hughes’ cutter-slider? Slutter?

  7. The Yankees are going to win today. I feel it in my bones, because for the first day this week, nothing shitty as happened to me yet, and it’s almost 1pm, and I’ve had a very productive day so far, leading for the opportunity for bad things to happen.

  8. Alkaline says:

I feel like CC is going to dominate today. Same with with offense. Calling a win by 7+ runs.

  9. Luisergi says:

Fucking day, middle of the week, games!
    Stuck at the Fucking office!

Hoping for the good fellas of RAB to keep me informed.

  10. CUYanks says:

Beautiful 1 pitch out. Keep that pitch count down!

  11. Brian S. says:

Anyone else read about FDP on fangraphs today?

  12. Darren says:

Suzyn just made about 4 mistakes within her first 30 seconds on the air. Maybe she was up late partying?

BTW, Roy White was on Boomer & Carton this morning. I love that man, what a cool dude.

    • awww…damn, what were they? I was outside having a smoke before the game started.

      • Darren says:

nothing major but they were literally one after the other…:

        (1) “Paul Cottier with the salute to America, sorry, salute to Amercans” (2) “tonight’s, I mean TODAY’s starting line-up” (3) “Ed Hickox, the starting third baseman, I mean, third base UMPIRE”
then she tried to throw it to Sterling but she called him “old man shriveled nuts”

Ok, only 3 of those actually happened.

    • TomH says:

How many have you made today?

      • Darren says:

By the way, was Suzyn respectful to you and her mother growing up, or was she sassy?

        • TomH says:

Let me tell you, you can be sure that at your age she wasn’t nearly so callow.

Hurt you didn’t I? Made you realize you were an asshole.

          • Darren says:

I’m an asshole for pointing out that Suzyn made a bunch of mistakes?

Listen, I like her personal take on the players and how she defends them, but she is a horrible, horrible broadcaster in so many ways. She has no sense of timing with John, she butchers things constantly and her voice isn’t exactly mellifluous. Anyway, in case it wasn’t clear, I was taking your extreme sensitivity to my original post and joking around that you must be her Dad, because no one else would have gotten so easily offended by an innocuous comment. I’m sorry if you took it another way.

  13. Cy Pettitte says:

    defensive clinic this inning

  14. Breaking it out early today: Chris Stewart: DEFENSIVE CATCHER

  15. CUYanks says:

Nice 9-pitch inning, even with the error. Looks like CC is attacking the strike zone today.

  16. The Real Greg says:

Still very efficient from CC. Under 10 pitches

  17. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Yankees need CC to go deep today.
Good to see the Blue Jays seem willing to cooperate.
Hopefully the defense decides to go along with the plan as well.

  18. Wow, Happ throws a little harder IRL than he does in The Show, normally I wouldn’t bring up The Show as a comparison to a real life player, but if anything the game adds a few MPH to pitchers fastballs instead of taking away.

  19. Brian S. says:

The Jays are probably going to pick up Davis’ option aren’t they?

  20. Brian S. says:

Gameday says two of those balls to Swisher were strikes? Confirm?

  21. VCR1111 says:

Is Gameday’s strikezone accurate at all? In that Swisher at bat, there were 6 pitches (all strikes according to gameday) but he walks.

  22. The Real Greg says:

    Cano moves the runners over.

  23. Brian S. says:

Good job moving the runners over Bob.

  24. Robinson: That white thing at your feet, that’s home plate. If a ball isn’t going to cross over that area, don’t swing!!

  25. The Real Greg says:

Thank you Jones for proving me wrong.

  26. DERP says:

    Where the haters at?

  27. Brian S. says:

    Attaboy Druw

  28. Samwise Eddard says:

And that’s all CC needs to take us home. Well done by Andruw. Let’s hope they pitch around Grandy to lose the bases for Pearce.

  29. Jimmy Is Key To David's Cone says:

    Andruw Jones did something!

  30. jjyank says:

  31. Then Jones breaks up a DP..maybe I’ll have to ease up on my hating.

  32. Brian S. says:

I’ll take the RBI groundout. The Yankees have been playing a lot of smallball lately.

  33. Todd says:

Great job by Pearce protecting Curtis and Andruw!!!!

  34. Jimmy Is Key To David's Cone says:

Joe G created those runs because his intuition told him that he should bat Jones cleanup — show faith in him and he’ll respond like a veteran should. It’s great to have a manager with this much know-how and knowledge of the game, makes it possible to win a few extra games which really counts when the division gets close at the end of the season.

  35. Get Phelps Up says:

Jeter should be on that poll.

    • Yankee Fan 1 says:

not watching, what’s the poll question?

      • Get Phelps Up says:

Who had the biggest bounceback season in the AL? The choices were Morales, AJax, Dunn, and 2 other players who I can’t remember.

        • But Jeter has been great since about June of last year…The real answer should be Dunn. Ajax: it’s more of a break out than a bounce back, Morales: did he even play last year after breaking his leg two years ago. Dunn: Probably the least productive player in the AL last year to a legit power threat again.

          • Yankee Fan 1 says:

Ahh thanks. I can see Jeter in the conversation, but Dunn should probably win comeback player of the year.

  36. The Real Greg says:

    Chris Stewart just got jeweled.

  37. Two innings <20 pitches. CC really setting himself up to real deep into this game while our two biggest bullpen arms probably aren't available. But he's not an ace.

I’m just going to leave this here, cause it’s still really funny.

  39. sangreal says:

7.09 It is interference by a batter or a runner when—
    (a) After a third strike he hinders the catcher in his attempt to field the ball;

    • Rule 6.06(c) Comment: If the batter interferes with the catcher, the plate umpire shall call ?interference.? The batter is out and the ball dead. No player may advance on such interference (offensive interference) and all runners must return to the last base that was, in the judgment of the umpire, legally touched at the time of the interference.

This is what Kay referenced. This is most accurate I believe compared to 7.09 above.

      • CUYanks says:

Just further in 6.06 (c) If a batter strikes at a ball and misses and swings so hard he carries the bat all the way around and, in the umpire?s judgment, unintentionally hits the catcher or the ball in back of him on the backswing before the catcher has securely held the ball, it shall be called a strike only (not interference). The ball will be dead, however, and no runner shall advance on the play.

  40. Robinson Tilapia says:

Is Happ out of the game? Poor Blue Jays.

  41. Damn it Nix. Possibly DP there.

  42. Robinson Tilapia says:

    Professional error there by Nix.

  43. Get Phelps Up says:

Professional Baseball Player error right there.

  44. The Real Greg says:

2 dinky hits and an error

  45. Robinson Tilapia says:

The shittiest bases loaded, no outs jam ever.

  46. Yankees have a serious problem when it comes to 7-8-9 issue this week it seems. Getting crucified in this area.

  47. Kramerica Industries says:

Are you fricken kidding me with how the Jays are getting on base?

  48. Robinson Tilapia says:

This calls for a mercy triple play.

  49. Dela G says:

    Beautiful DP!

  50. JLC 776 says:

If there was ever a bases loaded, no out jam that I felt like we can get out of, it’s this one.

  51. Robinson Tilapia says:

    Professional redemption double play.

  52. Cy Pettitte says:

well that was the ideal double play.

  53. Excellent defense for a change!

  54. Kramerica Industries says:

    Nix atones.

  55. The baseball player redeems himself.

  56. Get Phelps Up says:

That makes up for the error, Jayson.

  57. Robinson Tilapia says:

There has to be a joke about Joba and Uganda somew here.

  58. Brian S. says:

  59. Darren says:

typical CC. too bad we don’t have an ace.

  60. Erica says:

My cell phone signal decided to cut out (curse this stupid old building I work in), so I can’t even listen to the game. I’m depending on you guys.

(Never thought I’d see the day where I missed John and Suzyn.)

  61. Kramerica Industries says:

    Couldn’t get out unscathed.

  62. Dela G says:

damn, when the hell did encarnacion get so good? Man he’s stepped up since he got traded to toronto

  63. Robinson Tilapia says:

Argh. Could have been worse with encarnacion, I guess. Still a bunch of dinky dunk bullshit.

  64. The Real Greg says:

Cant blame CC. 3 dinky hits and an error

  65. JLC 776 says:

I’m gamecasting this thing – were the first two pitches not as close as they look, or is the zone getting squeezed?

  66. Frank says:

Problem all year with this team- inability to close out an outing with 2 outs.

  67. Robinson Tilapia says:

Moved to the PC from the IPad, lest I continue accidentally type things like “dinky dunk” instead of “rinky dink.” This is how Big Member happens…or not.

  68. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Get it fucking done CC

  69. Kramerica Industries says:

    …and another two out hit.

    For fuck’s sake.

  70. Darren says:

Where’s Scott Sanderson when you need him?

  71. The Real Greg says:

THat was the only hard hit ball of the inning. Bad luck for CC.

  72. Robinson Tilapia says:

Oh fuck me in the fucking nose with this singles bullshit.

  73. Dela G says:

my god please let this inning end

  74. Samwise Eddard says:

Get Lowe up and pull this guy already.

  75. Dela G says:

    jesus christ!

    3-2 jays

  76. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    WTF CC

  77. This is getting kind of ridiculous.

  78. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    So bad.

  79. Kramerica Industries says:

    …and another.

  80. The Real Greg says:

Blue Jays finding all the holes in this inning.

  81. Erica says:

I can hear the game from my boss’s office and she sounds very angry.

  82. VCR1111 says:

Awful! After getting that double play this happens…just awful.

  83. Cy Pettitte says:

on a scale of not ace to ace: not ace.

  84. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

These last two runs should be charged to CC.

  85. Dela G says:

    FINALLY, the inning is over

  86. The Real Greg says:

All of the runs are unearned. dinky hits, balls finding holes and an error.

  87. Well, I’d rather start expecting a loss now then hope we pull out a win, because this offense has been a nightmare this week.

  88. Frank says:

Jays got a couple cheap hits this inning but DP took care of that. Those 3 runs are on CC- bad pitches to Encarnacion, Lind and Escobar.

  89. jon says:

The worst part is that with this pathetic offense its gonna seem like it 13-2 and not 3-2, this lineup is so bad.

  90. Cuso says:

I decided to follow the game solely by refreshing the RAB page.

It’s…..interesting. How the moods shift within seconds is pretty funny.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

I hope you have proper neck support. It may cause complete whiplash once we retake the lead.

      • Cuso says:

My eyes feel like the first time I went to see Blair Witch Project in the theater back in ’99

        • Robinson Tilapia says:

Much like that movie, I bet this won’t be as fun to go through the second time around.

I went by myself to that. First “feel sorry for myself and sit alone in a movie theater” moment after breaking up with a longtime ex. Of course, I’d meet my now-wife about a month after that.

  91. Get Phelps Up says:

There was like, 1 hard hit ball that whole inning.

  92. So, I’m curious…what makes CC not an ace, literally 12 hours after THE BEST PITCHER IN BASEBALL in Justin Verlander gave up 8ER against the KANSAS CITY ROYALS.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

That didn’t happen. Impossible. Aces don’t ever make inferior players make contact with the bat.

Stop getting your baseball scores from MSNBC.

    • JLC 776 says:

Just people wanting to talk themselves into jumping off of buildings… damn annoying.

  93. …Robbie, really? Swinging at the first pitch after a 4 pitch walk?

  94. I love robbie. I really do. But he has basically zero plate recognition compared to even sub-par major leaguers.

  95. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

That was a rather pathetic AB.

  96. Samwise Eddard says:

Not sure we’ll score again until we get back around to Pearce.

  97. Dela G says:

man, happ is a fucking strikeout machine

  98. cashthegenius says:

Our Big guys make their scrub pitcher look like CY Young, their Scrubs make our Ace look like a number 5

  99. JLC 776 says:

Seriously, how small is the strike zone today? Gamecast is making everything looks like called balls right on the edge of the zone.

  100. Samwise Eddard says:

Now walk Granderson to set up Pearce with the bases jacked.

  101. Dela G says:

  102. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Wow, Rajai, that was really bad.

  103. Jersey Joe says:

  104. Cy Pettitte says:

lol what the fuck Davis? I’ll take it.

  105. The Real Greg says:

    The Grandy Man!

  106. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Thank You Rajai!!!

  107. Samwise Eddard says:

Pearce knocked that run in by instilling fear from the on deck circle! What a genius Girardi is today.

  108. Robinson Tilapia says:

    Cuso whiplash moment.

  109. Brian S. says:

A Granderson double. Now there is a rarity.

  110. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

All Yankee players should be eye black / war paint. It’s gritty.

  111. Robinson Tilapia says:

Sammy’s not long for this place, is he?

  112. CUYanks says:

With every Pearce at bat, Casey McGehee cries a little more in single A.

  113. Kramerica Industries says:

Jack Curry really should be more involved on YES telecasts.

  114. The Real Greg says:

    So the luck evens out.

  115. Erica says:

What’s going on in the game now???

  116. Kramerica Industries says:

Oh motherfucker, I was guessing Jimmy Key on that trivia question.

    Drafted by Toronto.

    Drafted in 1982.

Won a World Series with the Yankees.

BUT, he was NOT drafted 30th overall. So close.

  117. Athenian says:

The Yankees have so many mid and low .200 hitters it makes one think they are looking at an Oakland A’s line up from 2-3 years ago.

Never thought .250 or lower would be an acceptable batting ave in the majors. Somewhere Mario Mendoza is eying a comeback and a batting title.

  118. Get Phelps Up says:

    Shutdown innings!

  119. Alkaline says:

Yikes. I missed a lot. Was doing laundry and the washer decided to break. The old man and I had to mop up.

I’m thankful for afternoon game today. Golfing tonight. Tis a good day to have off.

  120. Jimmy Is Key To David's Cone says:

Good to see CC bounce back but I’m still worried by how bad he looked in the inning before…they should bring Phelps in soon, he’ll take care of it.

  121. Samwise Eddard says:

What a pickup Ichiro has been. And now he’s doing it against lefties!

  122. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Actually doing something against a lefty!

  123. Cy Pettitte says:

    nice AB Stewie

  124. Alkaline says:

    God he’s fast!

  125. Chris Stewart…why are you on my baseball team?

  126. Get Phelps Up says:

I think George Kontos would be a better hitter than Chris Stewart.

  127. The Real Greg says:

This is interesting. Swisher’s been very hot of late

  128. Jag says:

Hopefully they don’t squander 2rd and 3rd, no outs. I’d like to see at least one run out of it if not more.

  129. JLC 776 says:

Alright, Swish… stay hot, my friend.

  130. Brian S. says:

WTF we’re batting again? What happened to the top of the 4th?

  131. Dela G says:

    jeter, feared

  132. Jag says:

I’m sure they are hoping for the DP

  133. Samwise Eddard says:

Here’s yet another chance to blow a game open. One time, double in the gap.

  134. The Troll says:

Yankee catchers really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really . . . . . stink.

  135. Swish, you can’t swing at a pitch then complain when the next pitch in the same pitch is called a strike.

  136. Kramerica Industries says:

    Oh criminy.

Insurance runs would be really nice. It would be nicer not to torpedo a promising inning.

  137. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Do something useful Robbie.

  138. The Real Greg says:

That 1-1 pitch forced Swisher to swing at that one.

  139. Robinson Tilapia says:

The comment section after this half inning might be a lot of fun.

  140. Darren says:

Cano is about to double in the gap.

  141. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Swing at the balls.
    Take the strikes.

  142. JLC 776 says:

The helpful gameday scout just informed me that Happ has plenty left in the tank!

  143. Kramerica Industries says:

  144. The Real Greg says:

Umpire ruined that whole inning with that one strike call. Ridiculous.

  145. Robinson Tilapia says:

Erica, you won’t believe this. The Yankees had guys standing at each base, even though they were still batting, and they just stayed standing there until the inning was over.

  146. Dela G says:

wow JA happ was cliff lee this inning after those bases were loaded

  147. Samwise Eddard says:

There’s no excuse for this. Yes, Stewart made 1 out but then we had our best hitters up with a chance to blow the game open. In this lineup, those top 3 have to produce with men on. There is no Robertson, there is no Soriano today.

  148. Brian S. says:

  149. Jag says:

It’d be really nice to have a stress free blowout… it seems like it’s been forever since the Yankees did that.

  150. wow says:

well, that’s dreadful. nothing new there.

  151. The Real Greg says:

That 1-1 call to Swisher changed the whole inning.

  152. Kramerica Industries says:

    How will they react?

Baltimore has an excellent road record, and a 4-2 record in New York this season.

  153. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Great play

  154. stuart a says:

a mega risp fail from the losers.

stewart popping up is expected he sucks….the only people that think differently are al leiter and the stooges.

swisher not coming up big with RISP, what a foreign concept.

then we had the superstar cano do his thing. the guy has less rbi’s then curtis granderson!!a guy who is hitting 235 and usually has less opportunities…

Cano is a joke the guy should have 95 rbi’s for the season already if he could hit with RSIP….

they cannot blow out anyone even when the other team tries to give them the game…….

  155. The Troll says:

How is this team NOT the laughing stock of baseball right now? I know there are shittier teams, but this is the NYY! Injuries be damned! These juggernauts (bitch) were once 10 up in MLB’s toughest division! Is the bases loaded failure phenomenon this season’s theme/running gag or what? Anyone who doesn’t think this poonanny is straight up whackadelic is monumentally deluded. HOLLA ! ! ! ! !

  156. Jag says:

    Nice inning by CC

  157. The Troll says:

This offense is, dare I say, Mariners-esque?

  158. Cy Pettitte says:

RAB should really consider having a posts from the peanut gallery section where guys like Big Member, stuart a, etc. can write posts. for the site

  159. stuart a says:

i forgot rbi’s is a meaningless stat. tell that to scott boras and gm’s… that is why rbi’ guys do not get paid well…

    MY bad stat stooges….

  160. Darren says:

On the radio they’re talking about Pettitte doing his rehab in the majors with like 3 inning stints to start out (with Lowe or a call-up) backing him up, because they’re might not be any more minor league games.

Instead of a simulated game, don’t the Yankees have the respources to simply organize a game of Triple AAA players, independent guys, etc? W

Way better than a simulated game but don’t need to have Andy come back until he’s actually ready.

  161. stuart a says:

swisher ytd 303, wow. he is mashing all the way to 303.. give him 5 years $75 mill. the guy is a decent outfielder.

in yankee low expectations land 303 is incredible.. it is about 30 points above his avg. check out kyle seeger a avg players BA with RISP or adrian gonzalez…

303 puts swisher probably 2nd on the yanks to jeter with RISP. that shows how crappy this team is with RISP..

    4 runs off a bum again………………

  162. The Troll says:

The stellar offense continues to be stellar!

  163. Kramerica Industries says:

So Vin Scully will be coming to New York.

  164. Robinson Tilapia says:

It’s me, the baby, and our regular Wednesday sitter. How the hell does this kid have completely different patterns with her than with us? Kid’s asleep for almost two hours now with every light in the house on?

  165. ?! We ever heard of benefit of the doubt.

  166. effthisnoise says:

can’t wait until Lind leaves Yankees stadium and remembers hes Adam Lind

  167. Jersey Joe says:

Does anyone think Derrek Lee could be a good idea for sept? If Tex is gone for over 2 weeks maybe Ibanez/Lee could platooon at 1B/DH. Thoughts?

    C-Martin 1B/DH-Ibanez/Chavez/Lee 2B-Cano 3B-ARod SS-Jeter LF-Ichiro/Jones CF-Grandy RF-Swisher.

Without AROD back soon McGehee isnt really needed.

  168. Tom Q says:

I’ve seen second basemen hold the ball a shorter time and get the out call. Obviously Jones lost it, but he held onto it quite a stretch. Does the fact it ever popped out make it automatically no catch, or is there a time factor?

  169. Robinson Tilapia says:

For the benefit of Erica, the stuff about Jones above had to do with his trying to order a fly ball be caught through SeamlessWeb.

  170. Jersey Joe says:

  171. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    God fucking dammit CC

  172. Cy Pettitte says:

    now everyone defend CC

    • effthisnoise says:

giving up the lead on a homerun to a guy whose had 7 all year? Nah

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

Now’s not exactly the time, but I will to reply to something, at some point, with “how dare he not go into the HOF 300-0 for his career.”

      • effthisnoise says:

I get it, but this line up is garbage and this is crunch time. If he can’t shut down the Jays…its gonna be tough shutting down real line ups in the post season

        • Robinson Tilapia says:

It’s always tough to shut down a lineup in the postseason. One start is one start. He could turn around a pitch a perfect game in five days. Will you feel the same way then?

It’s like we only seen things in a straight line sometimes.

    • JobaWockeeZ says:

I laughed but everyone but Kuroda sucks even more. A lot more.

  173. Samwise Eddard says:

And it’s a great thing we didn’t score any runs last inning with the bases loaded and Swisher and Cano up.

  174. Erica says:

    Robbie T is slacking.

  175. Kramerica Industries says:

This is what happens when you can’t take advantage of opportunities. Unreal.

  176. jay says:

    Thats why you don’t bunt.

  177. The Real Greg says:

That’s the one bad pitch CC’s made today.

  178. Robinson Tilapia says:

We’d like to welcome all the trolls to our afternoon Happy Hour Special. We’ve got nothing but Nick Cave on the jukebox and special pissed-on cereal specials from stuart a.

  179. Karl Krawfid says:

I really wished I believed this was a world series team.

  180. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Glad to see CC’s pitching like the all-star he is.

    wait, what?

  181. stuart a says:

nah the extra runs last inning meant nothing.

    this team is a joke.

fatboy andruw in right cannot move to catch a ball that a athletic rf makes in his sleep.

cano doing at the plate today against the incredibly tough aj happ.

this team sucks….all this talent wasted………….

  182. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Dammit CC, I turn off Portal for this?

  183. Jag says:

One bad bitch, but to Escobar? Their least likely home run hitters seem to be tagging us badly this series.

  184. Samwise Eddard says:

CC’s day is done. Bring in Lowe and see if he can keep it close.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

Haven’t watched CC Sabathia much in his career have you? I’ve seen him pitch worse than this and go at least seven numerous times.

Still down by one. It IS close.

Other than giving the world Sam Pearce, what a waste of bandwidth you are.

  185. DERP says:

Couldn’t get Lind and Johnson out, smh

  186. stuart a says:

cc has given up 8 hits.. so i do not know what game you are watching..

cano 138 or less with the bases loaded. sign the sack of sh-t to a 7 year $140 mill deal.. after all him getting lazy and complacent is not even a remote possibility…NAH

  187. The Troll says:

I think there’s a case that can be made that the Yankees are currently the worst team in baseball. I’m just too lazy and don’t care enough to make it . . .

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

They’re in first place. Can I pour you a drink?

      • The Troll says:

Yes, but as most of the homers on this site were so keen on saying just a few weeks ago . . . “They’re still 10 games up on the O’s and Rays” – - – Right now, as they stand, this offense is no better than the Astros or Mariners. As for CC, well . . . maybe he’s having an off year. I’ve never been one to attack the big guy.

        • Get Phelps Up says:

You need to watch more Mariner and Astros games.

        • Robinson Tilapia says:

Did you really believe anyone was going to win the AL East by 10 games? I never thought so. It’s almost always a dogfight.

They’ve played .500 baseball since the ASB. That’s not good, but this would less noticeable if the Rays weren’t playing .700 ball, or whatnot. This isn’t a freefall of some sort.

This is a Yankee fansite. We’re homers. I’m certainly not apologizing for that.

    • thenamestsam says:

    • The Royals, The Astros, The Twins, The Mariners, The RedSox, The Padres, The Marlins, The Mets, The Brewers, the Cubs, and The Rockies at the very least all say HI!!

  188. Frank says:

Two leads and gave them both back. This performance has been the rule rather than the exception this season for CC.

  189. The Real Greg says:

CC, for the most part, has been victimized by dinky hits and errors. The home run was totally on him, but for the most part bad luck has bit CC.

  190. VCR1111 says:

Weren’t the Blue Jays struggling before they came to the Bronx? Weren’t the White Sox also struggling before they played the Yankees? WTF is going on!!

  191. CUYanks says:

Still a very winnable game. After all, Happ’s at 100 pitches so we’re gonna get close to 4 bullpen innings.

  192. The Real Greg says:

And another dinky hit. That’s like 5 or 6 of those type today

    • The Troll says:

They’re still hits. Dinky, fruity, putrid or not . . . They’re still the type of hits that the Yankees couldn’t hit for shit.

  193. Karl Krawfid says:

CC’s horrible change up the past couple years has prevented him from being the dominate CC we saw in the 2009 playoffs.

  194. DERP says:

Four hits this inning to guys hitting under 250. One of them a home run to a guy with an iso under 100. Pretty awful

  195. stuart a says:

cc gave up 4 hits in 1 inning and 5 in another.. newflash he has not been good today.

btw the jays pen is a strength of there’s not a weakness. ja happ is a weakness. the guy who has schooled cano 3 times already….

  196. CUYanks says:

    Shelley Duncan DFA’ed

  197. JackC says:

This isn’t rooted in hard data and therefore I’m open to being wrong, but I feel CC’s been not consistently the same pitcher since he had the perfect game going last July against the Mariners and went back out after the rain delay.

  198. Erica says:

Robinson Tilapia, I don’t know what’s going on unless you tell me. All this real baseball chatter is CONFUSING.

  199. Rocky Road Redemption says:

You guys are starting to let stuart bother you way too much.

Take it from me and my run-ins with Greg, you’ll all be happier if you pretend he’s not there.

The old saying is correct: Don’t feed the trolls.

  200. Samwise Eddard says:

Unless CC has a dominant September, which he very well could, I would hand the ball to Kuroda for Game 1 of the playoffs. It seems like it’s a forgone conclusion CC will be the #1 but we should go with the best man and this year it’s been Hiroki.

  201. stuart a says:

if the yanks lose today they will ahve gone 3 and 3 against the indians and the jays…after getting swept by the chisox….

    • jjyank says:

Hey cool, you used some capital letters!

    • Get Phelps Up says:

    • Need Pitching & Hitting says:

      and it’s spelled Einstein, genius

      • The Troll says:

Eisntein was a lesser known Polish psychologist/theologist . . . Einstein, of course, was an Austrian fame whore who snorted a lot of coke.

  202. Brian S. says:

If Nova was pitching this game everyone would be bitching about him getting DFA’d. But because it’s CC we will ignore that he has given up 5 runs to a AAA lineup.

    • TomH says:

Closer to AAAA, but I take the general point

    • The Real Greg says:

HAve you been watching the game. A majority of the hits CC gave up were soft and found holes. I’m not blaming him for that.

    • thenamestsam says:

Yup. Clearly looking at this thread just a bunch of people ignoring it. Nobody freaking out at all…

I’m guessing you haven’t been reading too closely, huh?

  203. CC Is Not An Ace says:

It’s sad that Hughes can pitch well against Toronto, but our so called ace can’t.

  204. Robinson Tilapia says:

This will all be made better by a Tracy Morgan Centerstage.

  205. stuart a says:

it is true CC has been bad today, it happens even to stars. verlander got rocked last night.

true cc is not as good as verlander or king felix or even close but he is a top 10 starter making top 1 money. that is the yankee way pay guys on past performance…

  206. CC Is Not An Ace says:

Kuroda is the best starter on this team and it’s not even close.

    • CUYanks says:

I love the “it’s not even close” addendum, which somehow preemptively strengthens one’s argument.

      • CC Is Not An Ace says:

I just go by what I see. Kuroda has been much better. He should start Game 1 if this team makes the playoffs.

  207. Darren says:

We absolutely need to grab him. time to right a wrong, we never should have let that big goofy bastard go.

  209. DERP says:

Nix did something against a righty!

  210. Kramerica Industries says:

Ichiro sure seems to be striking out a lot more these days, eh?

  211. Ichiro should be leading off.

  212. Brian S. says:

You have to PH for Stewart.

  213. teddy says:

you bunt if your going to pinch hit chavez, as usual giradri failed

  214. Hall and Nokes says:

It sure seems like Ichiro is always up.

  215. The Troll says:

They’re not getting the run in. Let us just accept the failure of losing a series to the Jays, okay? Good.

  216. Kramerica Industries says:

    Lead-off double, wasted.

Nine outs left to avoid dropping a home series to a ballclub that hasn’t won a series in over a month. I sure hope the Yankees can still find a way to avoid something that inglorious.

  217. JLC 776 says:

Can we just get out of this fucking month….

  218. Cy Pettitte says:

3-3 against the Indians and the Jays. just lol.

  219. The Real Greg says:

Blue Jays just seem to have the luck with them today. They also picked a good time to come in when the Yankees were injured.

  220. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

I really hope this RISP slump doesn’t last as long as the May/June RISP slump.

  221. The Troll says:

Hey Mikey, baby. How about a harrowing piece that details the Yankees royal suckery of July and August. Jinx those rich bastards to hell. TO HELL I SAY!!!

  222. Alkaline says:

    That’s why we got him!

  223. JLC 776 says:

Thank God we pulled CC – that inning was much better!

  224. Robinson Tilapia says:

I believe Ichiro said something pretty nasty in Japanese to Axisa after catching that.

  225. Samwise Eddard says:

Maybe Swisher or Robbie can run into one this inning. We haven’t had a HR in almost 2 games. If someone can get on for Pearce maybe he hits one.

  226. Kramerica Industries says:

“Kate Smith’s rendition of God Bless America”.

I don’t know if it’s the fact that I’ve heard that rendition HUNDREDS of times, or the fact that YES does the pathetic crowd pandering shots that you usually see all over Fox Sports networks…

But I’m quite tired of all of it.

    • The Troll says:

Agreed. Give me the Bieber anthem ANY day of the week. Eh.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

Yeah, that’s gone about 10 years too far.

    • TomH says:

Come on ‘fess up: you hate the sentiment of the song.

    • Brian S. says:

Why don’t you go hate America someplace else.

      • Kramerica Industries says:

I have no reason to justify myself, since I know the intent of what I said and there’s no cure for closed-mindedness.

All I can say is, between citing the specific rendition when hundreds exist, and calling out YES for doing something I thought they were above – that is, crowd shots, which you never see during games otherwise, something that I actually really like about YES…

let’s just say that I don’t see how America actually has anything to do with this.

  227. thenamestsam says:

One of the weirdest pitching performances I ever remember. CC completely dominating except for two innings where he gave up 9 total hits, most of which were bloops or seeing-eye.

    • The Real Greg says:

Thank you. Somebody decided to actually look at the game.

      • Hummingbird S. says:

So we should just pretend those innings never happened. It will make you feel better for sure.

      • Robinson Tilapia says:

I agree with the second sentence. I’ve seen games like this before, though. We’ve seen them this season, even.

        • thenamestsam says:

Sure you see them, but this is about as stark as I’ve ever seen the contrast. 8Ks, 0 walks, low pitch count despite all the extra batters faced, very few hard hit balls. Everything about this start has been dominating. Except his luck on balls in play and his sequencing. Basically this start is why someone came up with FIP.

  228. Kramerica Industries says:

    Here’s a novel idea:

    don’t waste this double.

  229. Robinson Tilapia says:

Someone hand Robbie Cano a map to home plate.

  230. Samwise Eddard says:

Robbie’s only chance of scoring was to keep running and hope that they threw the ball away.

  231. Kramerica Industries says:

This is a riveting discussion Kay.

At least you’re not overcomplicating things.

  232. The Troll says:

Man on 2nd with one out. Only a HR can bring him in . . . Doomed.

  233. JLC 776 says:

    Don’t make me cry today….

  234. Kramerica Industries says:

    Of course.

    I’m shocked Jones struck out.

  235. effthisnoise says:

thank God he didnt put Ibanez in there

  236. The Real Greg says:

    Nasty splitter

  237. Brian S. says:

    lol Jones

  238. sangreal says:

does Girardi just not understand the concept of a platoon? Considering how much he likes mix and matching with his pitchers, I don’t get it

    • CUYanks says:

      Lefty ready in bullpen.

      • sangreal says:

mentioned on the broadcast, but you can’t change pitchers immediately after a mound visit

        • The Real Greg says:

That’s BS. Never heard that rule before when applied to a pitching coach. I do it all the time in 2k12.

          • sangreal says:

Like I said, that’s what they said on the broadcast. Quickly glancing through the rules, I can’t find anything to back it up. Actually the rules specifically say you can make a second visit to the mound (but must remove the pitcher) if a pinch-hitter is brought in

      • sangreal says:

also, that’s why it made no sense to send McGehee down instead of Phelps

  239. Cy Pettitte says:

oh well, get another double and try again in the 8th. lol.

  240. stuart a says:

risp fail today is even above normal levels for the yanks.. Cano got a hit with no one on base what a shocker….

andruw jones does nothing for this team. he had 1 huge series against Boston that was it.. the guy cannot move and he strikes out like granderson………

    the NY Platooners…….

  241. Robinson Tilapia says:

Prove to me Aaron Loup isn’t Aaron Laffey wearing a different shirt.

  242. JLC 776 says:

    Oh, Curtis… you’re something sort of… shitty.

  243. Kramerica Industries says:

Banner performance on both sides of the ball today.

  244. Athenian says:

I can’t stand the smell of one run losses that should be wins looming over the stadium.

  245. Robinson Tilapia says:

Someone on this board is going to actually jump off a bridge in the next two innings.

  246. Eventually that runner has to come in to score…right?

  247. The Real Greg says:

The injuries have been catching up with them in this second half.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting says:

injuries caused CC to give up 5 runs?
injuries caused the Yankees to go 2-13 wRISP?

      • The Real Greg says:

Yes. When your lineup is depleted this is what happens.

      • JLC 776 says:

Well… yeah. Sort of. You didn’t really think the backup and role-players we brought onto this team that are now everyday starters would look like all-stars, did you? The RISP thing sucks and has haunted the team all year, but I don’t think the barely replacement level guys we have backing up the prime players were going to do too much.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting says:

I agree, but a lot of that RISP fail hasn’t been the replacements. It’s been the guys who’ve been here and are supposed to be able to get the job done.

    • The Troll says:

No. Excuses. Period (Period). Period! PERIOD? .

    • Athenian says:

I agree to a point. But this is a multi billion dollar team and to not have any serviceable replacements or call ups that can fill in is unacceptable.

You can only make excuses so long – starters aren’t injured (Freddy has held his own, Home Run Hughes has limited damage,) bullpen is a major sink hole.

The fact is that injuries have only exposed that THIS team needs all its starters because there is nothing else there. High to semi high on base percentage guys with high strike outs, inability to hit with RISP (2-13 today, think we have seen that before)and a mentality that “I must swing for the fences” is the problem.

You can’t keep blaming injuries. Isn’t it bad enough Jeter has had to step up and produce power and now feel the wrath of the every smart and brilliant Skip “Tebowmancrush” Bayless?

  248. stuart a says:

good news the great grandy did not strike out……..

he did get the bat on the ball does that equal a run???

ja happ sucks btw……then again so does about 4 other pitchers the last 2 weeks that have schooled them…

  249. Hummingbird S. says:

yay for Granderson, back to being a shitty platoon player

  250. teddy says:

glad to see cano get a hit

  251. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Gotta admit, right now we look pretty fucking sad.

For fuck’s sake, this is TORONTO. Win the motherfucking series, guys.

  252. Cy Pettitte says:

here comes Lowe to eliminate all hope of a come back

  253. Derek Lowe in a one run game…Steve Pearce in the line up, Andruw Jones batting clean up. If you had told me this was going to happen in June my first question would be “so how far out of first are we?”

  254. Karl Krawfid says:

    Catch the damn ball jesus.

  255. stuart a says:

cano with 70 rbi’s. i think that is 4th on the yanks behind texiera, grandy, and swisher… i do not think any of them have had great seasons either jsut show how unclutch cano has been..

70 rbi’s for the 3rd or 4th hitter of a team 21 games above 500.. cano is underachieving and no one acknowledges it.

ichiro with that great arm has not thrown out 1 runner yet with the yanks that i recall…

the implosion is coming another bad loss around the corner………….

  256. Robinson Tilapia says:

I didn’t even have time to make my “See? Derek Lowe is in the game. Everything will be just fine” joke.

  257. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Playing like dogshit FTL

  258. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Holy fucking shit. We look completely pathetic.

  259. effthisnoise says:

.248. 2 doubles and a homerun. Scrubs always get geeked up for the Yanks

  260. teddy says:

hey look a bunt, 1 manager playing to win, one not so much

    • Need Pitching & Hitting says:

yep. 1 run down in the bottom 6th = 1 run up in the top 8th

      Exact same situation.

      • thenamestsam says:

It’s weird that they don’t just bunt with every batter since bunting = playing to win. Hire me as Yankees manager and I pledge to have every hitter bunt every at-bat NO MATTER WHAT. Lets get the campaign started.

  261. Samwise Eddard says:

Well, that’ll be it. Lost 2/3 to a team so riddled by injuries that they make the Houston Astros look like a professional baseball team. Better hope the White Sox can slow the Os or the lead will be down to 2.

  262. Kramerica Industries says:

I love how that Rasmus home run is going to be shown every game the rest of the season.

  263. The Troll says:

All that talk about “WORST LOSS OF THE SEASON” – - – I officially nominate THIS game. Yup. They already lost. Chalk it up. The Troll doth declare the 29 4A Augustine Jays to be the WORST LOSS OF THE SEASON!

  264. Karl Krawfid says:

    Nice 4 pitches Joe.

  265. thenamestsam says:

Really strange pitching change. It’s not exactly like Sabathia was getting shelled, only at 99 pitches, 1 run game. All of that adds up to Derek Lowe? Don’t get this one, and I started writing that before he gave up two hits.

  266. Cy Pettitte says:

where do I go to get my refund for having to watch this month’s worth of Yankee baseball?

  267. Get Phelps Up says:

I hope the Rangers and White Sox go their job tonight.

  268. stuart a says:

6 hits today to go along with i think 5 hits yesterday. this team is hot at the bat……..

joba is behind a washed up 39 year old named derek lowe… this team is a wreck……

  269. wow says:

why raise the white flag so soon?

    this team’s going nowhere.

  270. The Real Greg says:

I dont give a shit if they lose.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting says:

giving stuart a a run for his money….

    • Cy Pettitte says:

are you trying to tell me that this season means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING?

    • The Troll says:

This team was never going to win. The offense was never capable. Meh. This was bound to happen sooner or later. I’m all right with it. With the Sox most likely (OH GOD, PLEASE LET THEM BE OUT OF CONTENTION), I honestly don’t give as BIG a shit as I may’ve otherwise. I still have my Giants and the Super Bowl VICTORY. I honestly wish that the Yankees had pulled off a Dodger blockbuster. This team has lost its mojo. With all the injuries, I would’ve loved to see some fresh rookie blood. Hell, give me Pedro Ciriaco over Sebastian Pearce. I actually hate this team as is. Can I say that? I hate this team. Hmm . . . doesn’t sound right. If they lose this game, amazingly enough, I will NOT care. Ugh. I’ve been drained. THE FIRE HAS BEEN DRAINED!!!!! I feel icky now.

  271. JLC 776 says:

I hate this month… and by ‘month’, I mean July 19th (or so) through all of August.

  272. wow says:

well, at least it’s the flukey Orioles next. Surely we will sweep them, right? Right?

  273. stuart a says:

arod stinks that is a given. the guy breaks down every year and has not been good for 2 years. most people realize arod is toast.

i am trying to change peoples minds on the sweet swinging Cano. He is totally overhyped.. he is a tease…

  274. Kramerica Industries says:

How in the flying fuck did he make contact?

  275. Samwise Eddard says:

Beautiful squeeze. One team knows how to manufacture runs, one doesn’t. That’s the difference in the ballgame.

  276. Karl Krawfid says:

Why not start the inning with Epply?

  277. The Real Greg says:

Just not the Yankees day. Everything going the Jays way.

  278. stuart a says:

    great bunt by mathis…

as mike axisa has said eppley has not been effective for weeks…

jeff mathis usually looks like a stud against us…..

maybe swisher and cano and granderson should work on there bunting…….

tidy clean game by the yanks. don’t worry they will comeback late they have done it all of zero times so far this year……..

    we can hope…

  279. Kramerica Industries says:

    Hah, another double.

They’ll probably score the run now, since they’re trailing by two runs.

  280. Get Phelps Up says:

Now let’s send stuart up to bunt!

  281. Cy Pettitte says:

Ibanez you idiot, now there’s no way they’ll score.

  282. VCR1111 says:

Let’s get some runs! C’mon Yanks!!

  283. teddy says:

hey look another leadoff double, they blow this in say 8 pitches

  284. Erica says:

    C’monnnnnnnnnn Jankees!

  285. Karl Krawfid says:

Yankees love playing strand the runner on 2nd.

    • stuart a says:

they have perfected strand the runner at 2nd. this is the usual yankee tease. get close, tough ab’s, no results..

ichiro is toast, the guy cannot even bunt…chavez had his 1 hot streak like andruw did and he is back to being a old, slow, 36 year old..

2 hits an inning eppley still in the game.. joba is the new hawkins(on angels now)…

  286. bobtaco says:

They’ll score one so they can still lose by one…

  287. Buffalo Bill says:

Mark Carig just tweeted that Ibanez is “another runner in stranding position”. I love it.

  288. Samwise Eddard says:

It hit the bag! Now we have another runner on 2nd! Manufacture that run!

  289. Kramerica Industries says:

    There’s some sorely needed luck.

    NOW, they’ll strand the double.

  290. The Real Greg says:

    The luck turning…

  291. Alkaline says:

Did that really just happen? Something went our way?

  292. Robinson Tilapia says:

    Please score, Russell. Just please.

    Betty, do something.

  293. stanley a. says:

Did the Yankees just catch a break? What is this sorcery?

  294. Get Phelps Up says:

    Yay luck!!

  295. I hardly say this: PLAY FOR ONE!!!

  296. teddy says:

    bunt please

  297. thenamestsam says:

Should have bunted, Russell. Got to play to win. Seems so obvious to me.

  298. Get Phelps Up says:

I hate to say it, but please bunt here.

    • thenamestsam says:

So that we can tie a game in which we’ve already used 3 relief pitchers and our two best relievers may be unavailable? Why play for one run here?

  299. This is going to sound harsh but if Ichiro cant get the bunt down I will hate him forever.

  300. Robinson Tilapia says:

I’m taking my son for a walk.

    Just fucking win, baby.

  301. Cy Pettitte says:

Ichiro can’t even lay down a bunt, you gotta be fucking kidding me

    • Mike Axisa says:

Ichiro’s a terrible bunter. Everyone just assumed he was good at it because of the type of player he is. There was a far better chance of him advancing the runner (or, gasp, driving him in) on a ground ball to the right side.

  302. Mandy Stankiewicz says:

    Do your thing ichiro!

  303. The Troll says:

Ha. I just saw (bunted foul) 2X. Funny shit.

  304. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Ichiro is fucking awesome.

  305. Kramerica Industries says:

    Son of a bitch.

And awful AB from Ichiro. What happened to being the best bat controller on the team? Brutal.

  306. teddy says:

    dfa suzuki, he a loser

  307. stuart a says:

ichiro did not do his damn job again. the guy cannot bunt..

another overpriced old pice of s…

  308. Rocky Road Redemption says:

When Rasmus caught that ball I yelled “FUCK!” and gave the TV the middle finger. I’m so rational when it comes to Yankee games.

  309. The Real Greg says:

Another bad break. That falls for the Jays .

  310. Cy Pettitte says:

Chavez just got unlucky that Lyon threw him a slider.

  311. Kramerica Industries says:

    Dammit to hell Chavy.

I miss the guy who could hit. Unreal – Martin hasn’t even moved from 2nd.

  312. The Troll says:

What’s the line from Major League?

“These guys fucking suck” ? or

“Who the hell are these fucking guys”

Either way, appropriate quotes for this current roster.

  313. tyrone sharpton says:

2010, pre steroids jeter woulda grounded into a double play in this situation, somehow #CONSPIRACY

  314. Kramerica Industries says:

There are times I absolutely hate being right.

  315. Cy Pettitte says:

Jeter was just unlucky, would have been a HR if the wall was moved in 30 feet

  316. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Why, I’m shocked, shocked that the Yankees stranded that runner. I never would have believed it possible.

  317. Samwise Eddard says:

Is this a preview of October? If we get to October which isn’t a given at this rate.

  318. stanley a. says:

How many more times are the Yankees going to strand the tying run in scoring position?

  319. oldmanalex says:

this team can’t bunt. can’t hit with RISP, can’t steal base and can’t play solid defense. a bunch of glorified homerun hitters who don’t need to get back to the fundamentals of baseball.

  320. teddy says:

jays will win because there guys know how to play the game.

    dfa suzuki

  321. Bubba says:

    The offense is somewhat offensive.

  322. oldmanalex says:

this team can’t bunt, can’t steal base, can’t hit with RISP, and can’t even play solid defence. These glorified home run hitters need to get back to the fundamentals of baseball.

  323. tyrone sharpton says:

jump ship! jump ship! the season’s over!

  324. green tea ice cream. I’m in heaven.

  325. teddy says:

in fact, they can only score on fluke plays

  326. Hall and Nokes says:

Weren’t we promised 8 straight wins in 1-run games?

  327. Kramerica Industries says:

Yankees were also the last team this season to win a game without hitting a home run.

  328. Cy Pettitte says:

    good effort, good job.

  329. Kramerica Industries says:

And ANOTHER banner play on defense.

  330. bobtaco says:

Who is left on the bench to pinch hit for Jones?

  331. Mike N says:

    Fucking Eppley?????

  332. teddy says:

    this is pathetic

  333. Mike N says:

Now fucking Rapada? Neither D-Rob nor MFIKY was available today?

    • Need Pitching & Hitting says:

      both pitched 3 straight
      DRob definitely unavailable
Soriano was warming up, but won’t be used if they’re still trailing

      • Mike N says:

I like using the closer when available in the top of the ninth of a one-run game. I dunno the stats, but I think of this as like going for it on fourth down instead of punting. And the stats are that football coaches should be going for it a lot more on fourth down and punting a lot less.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting says:

I’d be fine with it if he didn’t pitch the last 3 games. Considering the likelihood of the Yankees coming back, I’d rather he rest up for the weekend.

  334. stuart a says:

wow. cannot play any worse. 3 errors.

traling after 8 0 of 46.. only 1 in baseball.. that is sad..

don’t worry they have nicky and cano up next inning…i feel a lot better knowing those 2 studs are coming up….cano i am especially confident that he has the ability to get a big hit. he is on pace for almost 90 rbi’s this year, he is great. a true superstar on his way to cooperstown…afterall ask michael kay and suzyn w how great his swing is…..

  335. VCR1111 says:

Wishing, hoping, praying, begging for a walk off!

  336. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Bad luck guys. If Jeter had just gotten the bat to hit the center of the ball then the runner would have gotten lucky and scored.

    (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

  337. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Prediction: Toronto will score at least one run this inning, and the Yankees will score in the bottom of the ninth but one run short of tying the game.

  338. Cy Pettitte says:

nice to see Joba is, in fact, still alive.

  339. Kramerica Industries says:

Nothing like the LOOGY walking the only guy he’ll face.

After a 1-2 count, no less.

  340. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    nice job Loogy
Joba coming in, what could possibly go wrong?

  341. Cy Pettitte says:

    Girardi violating the Joba rules

  342. Athenian says:

    This is a funny game.

Um Joe, your bullpen is tired and dysfunctional. The only thing a pitching change does is get you exercise from walking back and forth to the mound – which lately makes you look like an expecting father pacing.

  343. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Wow, hate to join the trolls, but right now the team we’re putting out on the field really does suck.

    • The Troll says:

You’re not trolling when you see things as they’re meant to be seen. You’re being objective for a change. Embrace it. Love it. Learn to like it.

      • Rocky Road Redemption says:

I’ve never not tried to be objective, and I still think we win the division. Just that the team we’re putting on the field right now isn’t going to cut it.

  344. JLC 776 says:

We need at least one come-from-behind, walk-off win… let’s make it today. I want some fucking pie already.

  345. stuart a says:

rapada walks a ton of batters. shoup has walked 1, in less innings but 1….

rapada did not do his job, that is a common theme….

  346. The Troll says:

Didn’t the Yankees used to have one of the best bullpens in the game? Wait . . . didn’t the Yankees used to be good? Oh. I get it now. The SWB Yankees have found their new stadium. So happy for those guys!

  347. Athenian says:

And there is the white flag by Joe.

  348. Bubba says:

Now the defense is offensive as well.

  349. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Oh Joba. How I wish I had any confidence in you whatsoever.

  350. Cy Pettitte says:

lol at Andruw Jones. are you fucking kidding me.

  351. Kramerica Industries says:

    And that’s the ballgame.

    Fuck me sideways.

  352. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Andruw Jones is awful at baseball.

  353. Rocky Road Redemption says:

    So, we lost.

This team sucks right now. Hurry back A-Rod and Andy.

  354. Karl Krawfid says:

Holy shit what a bad route by Jones lol

  355. cjc says:

this team is an utter disgrace

  356. stuart a says:

andruw is having a great day..

the predictions that they will lose by 1 are off since jones cannot move his fat ass……

  357. Athenian says:

LOL!!! Seriously, is this a real game or exhibition?

  358. Mike N says:

  359. Kramerica Industries says:

    “Infield in”

Like it even matters anymore. How the fuck do the Yankees only go 3-3 against two teams that won, like, a combined 10 games out of 50? THAT is where division titles are won and lost.

  360. Cy Pettitte says:

it’s too bad they aren’t driving to Camden this weekend, we might have gotten lucky with the team bus driving off a cliff.

  361. Bubba says:

There is a hefty woman singing. Hopefully it’s just for this game.

  362. CUYanks says:

Joba really has to finish this inning now. There is no one left but Soriano.

  363. Samwise Eddard says:

I expect to see one of Mike’s first posts tomorrow be titled “Joba sent down to AAA.”

  364. Mandy Stankiewicz says:

Andruw is done as a player.

  365. mick taylor says:

adnruw jones fans unite. the load of crap can’t get a clutch hit , can’t field

  366. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Maybe we should start attempting to play bad, that way the opposite will happen and we’ll play well! It worked for George Costanza!

    • Erica says:

      When in doubt… SEINFELD.

      • Kramerica Industries says:

I’ll be sure to watch that at 2:00-3:00 this morning.

TBS is actually in the middle of season 4, which is Seinfeld at it’s absolute best, as far as I’m concerned.

        • Erica says:

I never watched the seasons in order, so I’m not entirely sure – which eps were Season 4? (I usually catch the 11pm showing on WPIX, or whatever it’s called these days.)

(Sorry Mike – Seinfeld is a happy thing, the Yankees are not right now.)

          • Kramerica Industries says:

The season that loosely revolves around George and Jerry writing a pilot for NBC.

Umm…last night were the bubble boy and Kramer Cuban cigar episodes…tonight are the opera episodes (Crazy Joe Devola) and the episode with Daphne Moon Jane Leeves – the virgin.

  367. The Troll says:

Mike, Anyone – Is this not the worst baseball you’ve seen the Yankees play in quite some time? Believe it or not, but I rather be a Red Sox right now. AHHHHHH! OMG. This season has killed me! My heart has shrunk THREE sizes!

  368. bobtaco says:

They’ll be lucky if it isn’t 13-5 when this is all over…

  369. DT says:

I hate Girardi. He has a knack for making winnable games into blow outs. What a fucking turd.

  370. Kramerica Industries says:

Didn’t even realize how absurd the Yankees numbers were.

    3-17 with RISP. Laughable.

  371. Haywood Jablowmy says:

    Jones is done
Cashman needs to find us a rh power hitting outfielder.

  372. jon says:

Ugh…this teams sucks right now: 3 errors, ACEFAIL, RISPFAIL, did I miss anything?

  373. Alkaline says:

Is this real life, or just fantasy?

  374. wow says:

it’s nice to actually see a team take advantage of RISP.

  375. Tom says:

When Lowe is the first man out of the bullpen in a 1 run game in the 8th inning a team has problems.

I realize Robertson is unavailable, but why bring in the long man, use him for 2 batters and then start going L-R-L-R? had they comeback to tie it who’s pitching in extras? Joba, soriano? Then Swisher?

He did that same crap with Qualls… apparently when you have the platoon advantage the quality of the pitcher is irrelevant

    • CUYanks says:

I agree with this sentiment. I understand Joe wants to use his best relievers in leverage situations, but he tends to put his worth reliever in in close games trailing.

    • stanley a. says:

CC was only at 99 pitches when he was taken out. GIRARDIFAIL

      • DT says:

Aside from that homerun, CC was just being hit by a ton of dinky singles and defensive lapses. He easily could have given up 8 without much trouble.

  376. Athenian says:

At least they went down like Champions, fighting.

  377. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Shitty Hitting + Shitty Defense + Shitty Pitching =/= Winning

Hopefully the Yankees start trying a different formula against the O’s.

  378. Mr. Sparkle says:

6-5 against one of the most beaten up and worst teams in the league. Now, losing 2 of 3 AT HOME to that same awful team…in a pennant race. Not to mention losing with the (supposed) ace on the mound.

When the Yankees don’t make the playoffs or get in the wild-card play-in, this is the crap everyone should remember.

  379. Reverse Mormon says:

This team is flat out bad right now. Really, what’s the point of even making the playoffs? They are so flawed in so many areas there is minimal chance they even get out of the first round.

  380. Kramerica Industries says:

They deserve a good tarring and feathering after this shitastic display. Way to waste six games against two awful ballclubs, Yankees.

  381. The Troll says:

This team could not look any more like toast. Honestly, I think they’re done. The playoffs seem extraordinarily unlikely at this point. Would this collapse be considered more epic than the ’11 RS?

    • DT says:

First off how is it unlikey when they are still in first? Eventually the team will get healthy. They look like shit now because they are basically playing with half a team. Also the ’11 Red Sox had a 9 game lead in September before blowing it.

      • The Troll says:

Rate of play . . . Two more weeks of this . . . They’ll be out of contention. How or why should they play any better before the REAL players return? Fuck the cavalry. Actually, I take that back. Any one is better than Jones, Ibanez, Martin and Stewart. I’ll take half the AAA lineup over the retirees they have on the field every day.

        • DT says:

Well due to the second wild card they basically have to lose every game for the next 2 weeks to get out of contention. I mean logically speaking that’s unlikely, even with the current rate of play. Orioles and Tampa have to play each other 6 more times too.

          • The Troll says:

But if one month is enough for the Sox to collapse after a 9 game lead, then why is everyone suddenly so confident in 3-5 games?

            • DT says:

Because the Red Sox ended up basically losing almost every game in september. That is a rare occurrence even among bad teams. You act as if this is the first time the Yanks were ever in a close pennant race this late in the season.

    • Mandy Stankiewicz says:

If they continue to go .500 they will not miss the play offs, so, no.
And can we all stop using the word collapse for every loss.

  382. stuart a says:

    lok at the lineup today.

    a 38 yr old SS
swisher a good far from great player
a overhped huge strike zone unclutch pretty swing 2b
a old, slow, fat, swing from the heels rf
a AAAA player who has good #’s against lefties.

    and on and on..

this team needs a total remodel…they are old, slow, platoon crazy team…

they have 2 very good guys in the pen and then bubble gum…

cano sucks.. 70 rbi’s batting 4th for the team 4th in baseball in runs scored……………….

    • FIPster Doofus says:

The 38-year-old shortstop leads the league in hits. His age is irrelevant to his production this year.

    • DT says:

I see without Arod, you’re on the Cano sucks bandwagon.

    • jjyank says:

      “a 38 yr old SS
swisher a good far from great player
a overhped huge strike zone unclutch pretty swing 2b”

You realize those guys aren’t even close to the biggest problems, right?

      • stuart a says:

i do understand but swisher is not a great player and people think differently.

cano is the biggest problem, then grandy, and then non existent catcher production…

        cano is 29 and underachieving….

        • Need Pitching & Hitting says:

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone call Swisher a great player.
I like how you keep making up shit to argue against.

        • jjyank says:

You think Cano is the biggest problem the team has? You’re freaking nuts.

How about A-Rod’s injury, Tex’s injury, Pettitte’s injury, Nova’s suckiness/injury, the bullpen turning back into pumpkin, Martin/Stewart being so bad, and probably several other things slipping my mind?

        • DT says:

.900+ OPS is underachieving? He had a bad game. Move on.

  383. Haywood Jablowmy says:

Cashman needs to go see hal and get the few pieces they need to win 28. Tex and arod down and no relief in sight.

  384. dkidd says:

they’re hard to watch right now, but i”m looking forward to the fan confidence poll if we get swept by the o’s

    not a happy day

  385. mt says:

Hopefully O’s can lose 1 of next 2 before getting to NYC getting loss column back to 3 – ChisSox start a rookie tonight so it might not be until tomorrow -

If O’s win next 2 against White Sox, they will come in to NYC on a six game winning streak.

I personally think they are a bigger threat than Tampa Bay because Rays offense can always disappear at any time like it has in last 4 games – O’s must have so much confidence being outscored overall in run differential but being 24-6 in one run games winning 13 straight – also they have no pressure – nobody expected this. Also they have done really well in Yankee Stadium the last eight or so games. They will keep going until somebody tells them to stop.

    • dkidd says:

      stop, orioles!

    • Kramerica Industries says:

No way are the O’s a bigger threat. The O’s are smoke and mirrors all the way, they’ve just mastered the art in a fit of lunacy.

They’re a -39 RD team 128 games through. It’s far too late for their luck to average out on them, but they’re still ripe for the picking in a short playoff series.

They aren’t the MLB equivalent of the 2011 New York Giants, who actually underachieved to be a -6 point differential team.

      • DT says:

It might not even out this year, but i fully expect them be to be a 4th/3rd place team next year. It’s like that Dback team from way back where they somehow won the division with a negative run diff and ended up back to mediocre next year.

        • Kramerica Industries says:

I’ll even be generous and say they would deserve a ~.500 record with how they’ve played this year, but long term, they’re still probably the worst off in the division.

This has to be 15 years of insanity finally rewarding the O’s.

  386. stuart a says:

the O’s are in this with lou ford and the bum from the pirates in the lineup. a 20 year old SS, with andino or someone else at 2b and a starting staff of who knows.. the yanks cannot comeback late and stink in close games….that is a huge issue. they are having trouble in tight games because they are homer happy and terrible with risp…….

  387. Samwise Eddard says:

Here’s what needs to happen in order to turn things around-

    1. Joba needs to be on the first bus to AAA.

    2. Andruw Jones cannot play the field ever again.

    3. Cashman needs to go down to the clubhouse and fire the guys up like he did in 09. Where were Jeter, Swish, and Cano with men on base? They need a wakeup call.

    4. It needs to be made known to CC Sabathia that he is not automatically a #1 starter in the playoffs. He has to earn it. If it were me, I’d give the ball to Hiroki.

    • Samwise, how dare you say I cannot play the field, I can play the field and always make sure the other team gets an extra base and hopefully an extra run. SMILE! Also love when I can get hit cleanup with the putrid numbers I put up. SMILE

Some say I’m the equivalent of watching a blood letting, but I say SMILE, and enjoy the show!

    • JonS says:

Hiroki HAS to get the ball as a the #1.

    • Mr. Sparkle says:

I don’t think any kind of wake-up call is going to help this team. No amount of pep talks is going to fix the numerous problems this team has. It’s something that’s been building all season. Think about it. They’ve had one hot streak surrounded by a lot of mediocre baseball on both sides of that streak. Maybe the hot streak was a flaw and this, right now, is what this team is…mediocre.

As for the #1 starter. If this team somehow still makes the playoffs in any form, I guarantee that if both Sabathia and Kuroda were rested and ready to go, Girardi will go with Sabathia. He manages by rote and there’s no reason to think he’d do otherwise in that case. He’ll go out and say something like, “This is what we brought him here for…to pitch in big games. He’s our ace and I’d take him over anyone else in the league in any game you absolutely have to win.”

    • Bunt Gardner says:

They were doing well until you started commenting. Maybe you’re a jinx.

  388. Hi guys–it’s Andruw Jones smile. Nothing like a nice day out in the park and popping up pitches (Chris Stewart is my twin in this area of expertise), striking out, and misplaying balls. That’s what I bring to a team. Maybe if the GM wasn’t busy trying to cover up his whore mongering in the offseason-he’d have done something to prevent this–but nevertheless I’m back in Bronx and sabotaging the team. SMILE!

    • JohnnyC says:

Wasn’t it just two days ago Girardi said, sure Andruw’s lost a step in the outfield but he gets real good jumps? Hoo boy.

  389. rogue says:

Losing 2/3 to the Jays at home will be reflected in the Confidence Poll.

  390. Samcro first nine says:

This team needs some new blood

    • RBC says:

I’ve been saying this for the past two years, but too many people still want to drink that big money contract kool aid.

  391. Hummingbird S. says:

If Girardi insists on using the same toys, they need to be taken away. It’s time to release Jones, Rapada and Eppley.

  392. dalelama says:

It has been obvious from the beginning of the season to those willing to notice that this particular Yankee team lacks heart and the fire in the belly. With absolutely nothing in the farm system the immediate future does not look bright. 4 to 5 more years before we are back on top. The stench of the Arod contract is going to last a long time.

    • RBC says:

Teixiera’s contract is just as bad. At least we’ll see A-rod hit 700 HRs when its all over. CC’s contract aint so hot either.
