The division lead has already been blown, there’s nothing anyone can do about that. Start this season with a win and get off a right foot. Here’s the starting nine…

Team Meeting Update: The Yankees did hold a 20-ish minute team meeting before tonight’s game, just to kinda talk about the next 27 games and stuff. As you can imagine, Joe Girardi wasn’t exactly willing to divulge the details afterward. It’s the club’s second team meeting in the last week.

Really? Martin’s hitting 5th?! I know I vouched for him earlier today, saying he is better than Cervelli, but shit if I was the Rays and if there is bases empty with Cano, Rodriguez, Martin due up I would either unintentionally-intentionally walk Cano and A-Rod or straight up IBB the pair of them and dare Martin, Granderson, or Jones to beat me.
MUST WIN!! Hiroki must win this ballgame and he’ll most likely have to pitch a CGSO to do it. I can’t believe Joe keeps trotting out the same old failures and expecting different results. Insanity is what that is.

Today is the first day in a long time I didn’t read a single RAB post all day. It’s kind of weird. But also liberating. Not that I don’t enjoy RAB posts, but it was nice to disengage for the day.
Hopefully this game thread doesn’t get ugly enough to drive me to the Giants game by the 3rd inning.
I’ve definitely cut back on my baseball media consumption the last few days. reading/hearing about the collapse every day, over and over again, is exhausting. I kind of, maybe, empathize with Sox fans now (if that’s even possible.)
I’ve been staying away from all sorts of Yankee related material. RAB comment sections, Twitter, MLB Radio, all of it is swamped with bridge jumpers and trolls.
If you really want to shake your head check out the comments on the NYY facebook posts or MLB page. The casual (read emotional and illogical) fans make the biggest splatter when they jump.
Really? today was one of the rare days that I did read everything. I don’t know why but almost in anticipation of the game I’ve had a RAB tab open all day. I usually just come by for the game, maybe an hour before to read the daily articles, because unless something is happening in Yankee land a lot of the comments are always the same regardless of what the actual article is about.
I usually read everything, and comment on almost every thread. But in situations like this, I feel like it would be too gloomy all the time. I want to be in a good mood this week given the fact I am on vacation.

I was just thinking something. Everybody(including me) says “These guys are major leaguers, why can’t they bunt? How do they lack the ability to do that?” I think the answer is because they are major leaguers. My logic is these are the kids that you played with who hit like .900 up until high school where they hit .600 instead. At one point would any coach have them bunt?
I think you’re right. When people were calling for Mark Teixeira to bunt, all I could think of is “when was the last time he actually bunted in a game? Like 5th grade?”
That last sentence should read “At WHAT point would any coach have them bunt.”
Now Swisher should bunt Jete over to 2nd. They need to play small ball to win.

Regarding Swish, what is the alternative? Unless he really sticks to the “Werth money” guns, I’d like to see him back. I have more faith in him going forward than Grandy, to be honest. Unless the Yankees swing a trade for a legit RFer, I don’t see how they let him walk and make the team better.

Why does everyone seem to think that blowing the lead is going to wake them up? They were clearly pressing before, and they’re only going to press more now that the lead is gone. The teams behind them are playing loose, and the Yankees are as tight as a drum.

Our only chance is to get someone to 3rd and induce a balk call from Balkin Bob Davidson. Swisher and Cano lead the league in the K-DP combo.

Honestly if Joe for some reason were to be let go (I’m not saying I do or don’t want it to happen, but it’s not happening) the only person I want interviewed for the job is Tito.
Yeah, he would have to be first in line. I remember reading something recently saying that when they hired Girardi, the only people they interviewed were him, Pena, and Mattingly because they wanted someone familiar with life with NYY. If Girardi gets canned, I think Francona would be an exception to the whole “knows what NYY is like” rule.
Well he managed Boston to 2 World Series wins and a bunch of post seasons. I think if you manage in Boston/New York/Phili you can manage just about anywhere.
I’d be cool with Tito. I personally don’t want Girardi fired, but I think Tito would be my first choice if he was. Plus, that’d be some sweet karma to Boston if the Yanks hired Tito and they proceeded to win the World Series.

Russel Martin has done everything to prove that you should want to pitch to him, even over a slumping Alex. Perfect Example: popping up a 3-1 fastball right down the middle.
No reason to remotely pitch around anybody in the lineup after Cano. Arod didn’t even manage to make contact on a fastball down the middle.

it feels like a 12K night for Moore.. it’s really amazing that no hitter on the Yankees can hit a pitch in the middle of the plate. A-Rod got 2 and did nothing.
37 year olds tend to have a hard time catching up to 98MPH pitch thrown by a 22 year old fireballer.

Man…I didn’t even like football until college. Even then, it was just something I did to pass time during the baseball offseason. Now I’m actually looking forward to the Giants game. Never thought I’d say that.
The Giants are a very likable team. The only unlikable member was Jacobs and he’s gone.
I expect you to give me a briefing. Outside of Eli, a couple defensive guys and a couple offensive guys, I know nothing.
I’m not as into the Giants as the Yankees, for example I couldn’t tell you a single member of their O-line. Look out for Ramsis Barton, Wide receiver, this season though. He’s primed for a break out year if he can stay healthy.

Curtis Granderson is pretty much sealing his fate this season. He’s shown that his flaws outweigh his pros. I like the power but hate the shitty defense and how strikeout-able he is. I don’t want another old guy on this team who can’t hit to save his life.
No doubt they pick up his option though. they don’t have anyone else to replace him yet.
Maddon has to be laughing at the way Girardi employs defense shifts. I still remember the Yankees getting beat by Desmond Jennings in the first series of the year on a similar groundball… because Girardi apparently though Jennings was a deadpull hitter and had the 2nd baseman pretty much behind 2nd.
when there is a man on first or 2nd, for some reason either the SS (if it’s a lefty) or the 2nd baseman (if it’s a righty) is almost always nearly behind 2nd base, regardless of who the hitter is. And what makes this painful is if there is noone on base (or a guy on 3rd), Nix is nowhere near 2nd base with Longo up. I don’t know if he gets to that ball either way but the positioning was crap.
Much like the platoon thing, Girardi has dumbed it down and just applies it in blanket form without actually thinking about the specific hitter or pitcher involved… all that matters is handedness.

Jeff Keppinger > Jayson Nix/Casey McGehee. I love how the Rays always find these diamonds in the rough every year even though they have about 1/8th of the resources the Yankees do. The front office has to be part of the blame opfor the failures of this team over the past couple of years. Our scouting and drafting has been horrible.
I agree that the Rays FO does a good job, but I don’t understand how the Yankee teams of the past few years have been failures. We’ve made the playoffs in each of the last three years, finishing first in 2011 and 2009. Teams like the 2009 team don’t come around every year.

same here. Funny now that in the offseason people at other sites thought I was crazy saying the angels should trade bourjos. Defense is good, but if a player can’t hit you will never score any runs.

What a waste of trading Austin Jackson! I guess Cashman just doesn’t believe prospects can blossom into superstars anymore. That’s what fueled the 90s dynasty, the farm. And the front office is straying away from that. Granderson has been great don’t get me wrong but I’d rather have 6 years of Austin Jackson on the cheap then one good year (last year) from Granderson.
Exactly. And he traded our other top flight prospect for a drunk, overweight injured pitcher. Sure Montero ain’t lighting it up in Seattle but couldn’t we have gotten someone better than a lush?
Wait till next year to decide that. Montero had no long term future with the team because he isn’t a good catcher. Pineda and Campos could both turn out to be good pitchers. Unless Montero turns into M Cabrera type hitter then it was a fine trade. Every year this team doesn’t have the pitching it needs.
Tino, O’niel, Coney, Wells, Girardi, Brosius, and countless others all say “Hi, and we’d like some credit for that dynasty some time soon please?”

Joe Girardi is not particularly innocent for this wretched skid the Yankees are on, but at the same time, it’s really hard for him to do much of anything right now when literally NOTHING is working for this team right now.
I mean, if his near vein-bursting experience couldn’t even get the Yankees to come close to scoring another run last night, then nothing is going to fire this team up right now.

I know, if I was Joe I would be starting Nunez regularly. Sure his defense isn’t as good, but playing Nix/Pearce/Jones/Ibanez on a regular basis is killing any chance of a big inning unless it starts at the top of the lineup.

I was to young then to even be allowed to stay up late enough to watch the games let alone understand what was happening. In retrospect, I’m happy I was.
I was just old enough, and yeah, it was also the first time baseball ripped my heart out.
1995, 1997, 2001 and 2004 were all the worst for me, to varying degrees.
1995 because I knew it was Mattingly’s last chance. That was a little ironic because my older sister loved Mattingly and I was a Winfield guy. I always resented that Mattingly was better like. I was too young for the 1981 World Series and didn’t realize it had to do with homegrown vs. free agent. Still, when Winfield won with Toronto, I was able to forgive the Yankees for trading him.
1997 sucked because my grandfather was dying as that series was concluding. Years later I came to the realization that I didn’t particularly like my grandfather for several reasons, so this doesn’t hurt as much.
2001 was the worst year of my life. Failed out of Notre Dame, 9/11, stopped going to class at community college which pretty much ended my chance of ever getting back to ND, all that shit.
2004 was obvious.
Yeah, that was horrible. 2004 was still way worse for me, but 2001 was bad.
2004 I was pissed. I actually got into a fight the next day at school cause a Met fan was goading me about it, 2001 I was just sad.
