Game 136: Game One

(Ronald Martinez/Getty)

It’s a new season. The Yankees and Orioles are tied atop the AL East — the Rays are right on their tails as well — and they have 27 games to sort this thing out. The division lead has already been blown, there’s nothing anyone can do about that. Start this season with a win and get off a right foot. Here’s the starting nine…

SS Derek Jeter
RF Nick Swisher
DH Robinson Cano
3B Alex Rodriguez
Russell Martin
CF Curtis Granderson
LF Andruw Jones
1B Steve Pearce
2B Jayson Nix

RHP Hiroki Kuroda

Tonight’s game starts a little after 7pm ET and can seen on YES locally and MLB Network nationally.

Team Meeting Update: The Yankees did hold a 20-ish minute team meeting before tonight’s game, just to kinda talk about the next 27 games and stuff. As you can imagine, Joe Girardi wasn’t exactly willing to divulge the details afterward. It’s the club’s second team meeting in the last week.

Categories : Game Threads

  1. Craig says:

Who had the meeting with Girardi to smack some sense into him and get Russell Martin outta the no. 5 spot?

  2. Rey22 says:

Help us Obi Wan Kuroda. You’re our only hope.

  3. wow says:

I bet if you’d ask any of the players they’d say something like: “If you would have told me in April that we would be tied for first place in September, I would have signed up for that in a heart beat. Who wouldn’t?”

    lol. what a joke.

  4. stuart a says:

angels swept the A’s in oakland. a old fashioned beat down. the angels offense is back and they are pummeling teams bad pitching or not…

  5. Really? Martin’s hitting 5th?! I know I vouched for him earlier today, saying he is better than Cervelli, but shit if I was the Rays and if there is bases empty with Cano, Rodriguez, Martin due up I would either unintentionally-intentionally walk Cano and A-Rod or straight up IBB the pair of them and dare Martin, Granderson, or Jones to beat me.

  6. EDDARD says:

MUST WIN!! Hiroki must win this ballgame and he’ll most likely have to pitch a CGSO to do it. I can’t believe Joe keeps trotting out the same old failures and expecting different results. Insanity is what that is.

  7. JobaWockeeZ says:

I hope they threatened salaries for the underachievers in the meeting. Maybe then they’ll play better.

  8. DC says:

    So, who bunts first?

  9. Nice Scheister says:

    Be my Hiro, Hiroki!

  10. dkidd says:

just win one game. one. some how, some way. remind us that’s it possible.

  11. What's my name!? says:

Exhibit A for why this team in in freefall: Their #5 hitter tonight is “hitting” .199 with a .665 OPS

    Girardi is a horrible manager.

    • Yanks wins 5 straight starting tonight says:

      Answer to your question:

      • What's my name!? says:

        Hey look at the Troll-homer!

Keep worshipping at the Girardi Idol. He’s only made Martin the DH four times this year.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Feel free to completely ignore the alternatives.
At least one of those DH days, the only alternatives were Ibanez against a LHP or Ramiro Pena.
Martin batting 5th is a joke, but look at the alternatives. Just about any alternative would also be a joke. The issue is more the quality and performance of the players available.

        • DC says:

Yeah, and how did that work out tonight, MIT ass?

  12. Bill says:

Stay afloat until the last 11 games. Twins jays bosox. This team has collectively slumped and thus will bust out together. This has a 2000 team sorta feel

  13. Tom says:

Platoon by numbers again… it’s almost like Matt Moore doesn’t have reverse splits.

This is what, the 3rd time in the last week where Girardi doesn’t even look at the pitcher’s actual splits?

I’m hoping it works, but I fear Moore will throw changeup after changeup to guys like Jones, Pearce, Nix.

  14. players only meeting tonight?! Interesting.

  15. jjyank says:

Today is the first day in a long time I didn’t read a single RAB post all day. It’s kind of weird. But also liberating. Not that I don’t enjoy RAB posts, but it was nice to disengage for the day.

Hopefully this game thread doesn’t get ugly enough to drive me to the Giants game by the 3rd inning.

    • Cy Pettitte says:

I’ve definitely cut back on my baseball media consumption the last few days. reading/hearing about the collapse every day, over and over again, is exhausting. I kind of, maybe, empathize with Sox fans now (if that’s even possible.)

    • Stratman9652 says:

I’ve been staying away from all sorts of Yankee related material. RAB comment sections, Twitter, MLB Radio, all of it is swamped with bridge jumpers and trolls.

If you really want to shake your head check out the comments on the NYY facebook posts or MLB page. The casual (read emotional and illogical) fans make the biggest splatter when they jump.

    • Really? today was one of the rare days that I did read everything. I don’t know why but almost in anticipation of the game I’ve had a RAB tab open all day. I usually just come by for the game, maybe an hour before to read the daily articles, because unless something is happening in Yankee land a lot of the comments are always the same regardless of what the actual article is about.

      • jjyank says:

I usually read everything, and comment on almost every thread. But in situations like this, I feel like it would be too gloomy all the time. I want to be in a good mood this week given the fact I am on vacation.

  16. Stratman9652 says:

Oh great, Bob Davidson is the HP ump.

  17. I was just thinking something. Everybody(including me) says “These guys are major leaguers, why can’t they bunt? How do they lack the ability to do that?” I think the answer is because they are major leaguers. My logic is these are the kids that you played with who hit like .900 up until high school where they hit .600 instead. At one point would any coach have them bunt?

  18. EDDARD says:

Now Swisher should bunt Jete over to 2nd. They need to play small ball to win.

  19. jim p says:

Waldman in response to Girardi’s “you can’t ask players to do what they can’t do” in a pregame interview” “Well, these are major leaguers! Why can’t they bunt? They lost to Detroit because they couldn’t move a runner, hit a sacrifice fly.” In a very heated tone.

Worth noting, imo, only because I’ve never heard her be so critical, and upset, at a line coming from the Yankees.

Sterling says he was told that Andy might be ready in less than two weeks. We’ll see.

  20. Change right down the middle. What in gods name are you waiting for Swish.

  21. Chilango says:

    Swisher + Change = K

  22. EDDARD says:

Two people the Yankees should let walk this offseason – Lou Pinella and Nick Swisher.

    • jjyank says:

Regarding Swish, what is the alternative? Unless he really sticks to the “Werth money” guns, I’d like to see him back. I have more faith in him going forward than Grandy, to be honest. Unless the Yankees swing a trade for a legit RFer, I don’t see how they let him walk and make the team better.

  23. My god. It’s almost like it’s scripted.

  24. Kempire Strikes Back says:

Leadoff man gets on: K and a DP. Love this team.

  25. Matt says:

Why does everyone seem to think that blowing the lead is going to wake them up? They were clearly pressing before, and they’re only going to press more now that the lead is gone. The teams behind them are playing loose, and the Yankees are as tight as a drum.

  26. Laz says:

Arod completely changes the look of the lineup for me.

  27. EDDARD says:

Our only chance is to get someone to 3rd and induce a balk call from Balkin Bob Davidson. Swisher and Cano lead the league in the K-DP combo.

  28. Defensive Indifference says:

K-Long was right. Swish should have bunted. (Cano, too probably.)

  29. Big Member says:

i think pinella would be great girardi replacemnt next year

  30. EDDARD says:

Hiroki can’t give up one single run or it might be over. Poor guy. He’s done all he can this season and they just don’t score any runs for him.

  31. Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

Everyone be cool. We got this.

  32. Karl Krawfid says:

Sam Fuld using the whole field. lol

Using a splitter to get ahead in the count to set up the 4 seam fastball out pitch.

    Got to love the Yanks.

  33. Pat D says:

I missed the opportunity to say this at the top, but I’ll say it now.

If the Yankees fail to win this game, there will be darkness for 1,000 years!

  34. Hummingbird S. says:

Rays announcers are talking about Sam Fuld and how he’s such a tough out. It must not be the same Sam Fuld of the 93 career OPS+

  35. Chilango says:

Leadoff runner on, bunted over to 2d, RISP. Of course.

  36. EDDARD says:

These Rays don’t have any trouble bunting. Now they have a RISP which we probably won’t achieve until the 5th inning.

  37. stuart a says:

the great cano with the roll over dp, what a shockeer.

    again he is a fraud…..

  38. Cy Pettitte says:

    fucking lol.

  39. Karl Krawfid says:

OMG Mcgee Go for the fucking ball

  40. Hummingbird S. says:

    game over.

  41. Ron says:

    And it begins

  42. EDDARD says:

Well, that should just about do it. Bunting works, doesn’t it? I think I’m gonna see what the Giants are up to.

  43. Widget says:

Maybe the Yankees will try something different and try to score runs tonight?

  44. Karl Krawfid says:

Why the fuck would you be holding on Sam Fuld at 2nd anyway? Jesus christ his gonna score regardless.

    Fuck this team.

  45. Matt says:

Poor Kuroda. He makes a great pitch and induces a weak ground ball, only to have Cano positioned up the middle instead of in his normal spot.

You can just see the body language of Swisher as he tossed that ball back in. Defeated.

  46. Cuso says:

We were better off when his name was believed to be Mcgayhee

  47. cjc says:

    yay football season

  48. I’m shocked that Alex has seen even one, let alone 2, hittable pitches in this AB.

  49. Cy Pettitte says:

they’ll probably get 2 hits at the most over the next 5 innings

  50. Widget says:

Second place after tonight. Just scary to realize the freefall is still not over.

  51. Hummingbird S. says:

it feels like a 12K night for Moore.. it’s really amazing that no hitter on the Yankees can hit a pitch in the middle of the plate. A-Rod got 2 and did nothing.

  52. Chilango says:

Martin batting 5th just about says it all.

  53. Will The Thrill says:

    A-Rod’s contract looks worse everyday.

  54. Cy Pettitte says:

superb inning from the 4-5-6 hitters.

  55. Kempire Strikes Back says:

  56. Karl Krawfid says:

This is gonna make me cry.

  57. I hate Gameday. Where was that last pitch to Grandy? Was it at least a pitch he should be swinging at?

  58. Cuso says:

    Thigh-high, 3-1 straight-arrow fastball to #5 hitter and weak pop-up to short.

  59. jjyank says:

Man…I didn’t even like football until college. Even then, it was just something I did to pass time during the baseball offseason. Now I’m actually looking forward to the Giants game. Never thought I’d say that.

  60. stuart a says:

sheep going to slaughter. highlight from the yansk first 2 innings. swisher watching a pitch go right down the middle not moving. cano with a roll over dp, and grandy with a K ..

thank g-d arod is back our savior is here. after all the overpaid piece of crap got 2 hits that almost left the infield.

this is groundhog day, nuts….this team is a disgrace….

1 hit so far tonight, maybe they can get 7 tonight. if the announcers tell me how great the opposing pitcher is for 7 innings they are out of there minds… the yankee offense is in hibernation.

  61. Will The Thrill says:

Curtis Granderson is pretty much sealing his fate this season. He’s shown that his flaws outweigh his pros. I like the power but hate the shitty defense and how strikeout-able he is. I don’t want another old guy on this team who can’t hit to save his life.

  62. Tom says:

Maddon has to be laughing at the way Girardi employs defense shifts. I still remember the Yankees getting beat by Desmond Jennings in the first series of the year on a similar groundball… because Girardi apparently though Jennings was a deadpull hitter and had the 2nd baseman pretty much behind 2nd.

when there is a man on first or 2nd, for some reason either the SS (if it’s a lefty) or the 2nd baseman (if it’s a righty) is almost always nearly behind 2nd base, regardless of who the hitter is. And what makes this painful is if there is noone on base (or a guy on 3rd), Nix is nowhere near 2nd base with Longo up. I don’t know if he gets to that ball either way but the positioning was crap.

Much like the platoon thing, Girardi has dumbed it down and just applies it in blanket form without actually thinking about the specific hitter or pitcher involved… all that matters is handedness.

  63. Cy Pettitte says:

Yankee offense goes down 1-2-3 almost every inning, Yankee pitchers can’t have a clean 1-2-3 inning

  64. Big Members Only (formerly RI$P FTW) says:

    Another high fly ball
Would you believe it’s already fall?
    Another soft grounder to third
The O’s and Rays feet, have you heard?
    Another stranded, another stranded
    The parade stops there
    Another stranded, another stranded
    Opportunity to thin air

  65. Cuso says:

“At some point, you just have to tip your cap to the pitcher….”

  66. TomH says:

I see Toronto has a run. Someone must have read that comment the other day that the Jays were–how to put this?–not giving it their all.

They’ll give their all when the Yankees show up.

  67. Will The Thrill says:

Jeff Keppinger > Jayson Nix/Casey McGehee. I love how the Rays always find these diamonds in the rough every year even though they have about 1/8th of the resources the Yankees do. The front office has to be part of the blame opfor the failures of this team over the past couple of years. Our scouting and drafting has been horrible.

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

I agree that the Rays FO does a good job, but I don’t understand how the Yankee teams of the past few years have been failures. We’ve made the playoffs in each of the last three years, finishing first in 2011 and 2009. Teams like the 2009 team don’t come around every year.

  68. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

well at least Granderson is helping with his stellar defense

  69. Karl Krawfid says:

    lol just call the game.

  70. Defensive Indifference says:

    Kurtis whiffs on both ends.

  71. EDDARD says:

Yeah, trade his ass this offseason. Gardner can get that and for a lot cheaper. What a waste of a season.

    • Karl Krawfid says:

I think he has a contract option.

    • Will The Thrill says:

What a waste of trading Austin Jackson! I guess Cashman just doesn’t believe prospects can blossom into superstars anymore. That’s what fueled the 90s dynasty, the farm. And the front office is straying away from that. Granderson has been great don’t get me wrong but I’d rather have 6 years of Austin Jackson on the cheap then one good year (last year) from Granderson.

  72. Cy Pettitte says:

fucking pathetic. when is someone gonna step up? Offense has been bad but Kuroda is shitting the bed in the 2nd inning. He or CC should be able to give us 7 or 8 innings of shut out of 1 run ball against a team like the Indians, Jays or Rays.

  73. Cuso says:

That’s what you get for trying to copy Jeter’s scrape-face, Elliot.

Please make them pay for that ineptitude, Yanks.

  74. EDDARD says:

Didn’t work but at least Maddon is trying. One manager is using ingenuity to maximize the talent that he has and the other manager is sitting back waiting for someone to bail him out with a home run.

    • Kramerica Industries says:

I said it last night but it bears repeating:

Joe Girardi is not particularly innocent for this wretched skid the Yankees are on, but at the same time, it’s really hard for him to do much of anything right now when literally NOTHING is working for this team right now.

I mean, if his near vein-bursting experience couldn’t even get the Yankees to come close to scoring another run last night, then nothing is going to fire this team up right now.

  75. wow…their’s an annoying scraping/buzzing noise on the radio broadcast, almost like there is a fly buzzing around right on the microphone. It is the most distracting annoying thing since the bells.

  76. flamingo says:

  77. Nice pitching there by Kuroda. Offense:TAKE SOME FUCKING PITCHES give this guy a break!!! I will guarantee right now: if this isn’t at least a 10+ pitch inning for Moore there is 0 chance of winning this game.

  78. Cy Pettitte says:

I would hope Jones runs into the ball, period. then he would actually get on base.

  79. Mike N says:

I am in a good mood for unknown reasons, and I feel good about this game. I think Kuroda-san is gonna settle right down and pitch a complete game win.

  80. The Guns of Navarone says:

    Thanks for coming Andruw

  81. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

  82. Chilango says:

Binderfuck: look at the chapter on reverse splits…

  83. EDDARD says:

Absolutely pathetic that he still has a roster spot let alone starting. Wouldn’t wanna play Nunez or try anything different because everything is working so well as is.

    • Laz says:

I know, if I was Joe I would be starting Nunez regularly. Sure his defense isn’t as good, but playing Nix/Pearce/Jones/Ibanez on a regular basis is killing any chance of a big inning unless it starts at the top of the lineup.

  84. Kempire Strikes Back says:

Awful at-bat by Andruw. It looks like he’s afraid to swing to swing the bat.

  85. Karl Krawfid says:

Jesus christ swing the fucking bat.

  86. Cy Pettitte says:

wow this is just a joke. they can’t even put it in play. here comes another 10 pitch 1-2-3 inning.

  87. Will The Thrill says:

It seems like the hitters are either taking or swinging away, hoping they get lucky. Haha! They have no idea what their doing at the plate!

  88. Widget says:

Why did they cut Fuokodome? He has to be better than Pearce.

  89. 15 Day DL says:

Was Girardi smoking meth when he put out this lineup?

  90. TomH says:

    Over-matched against this kid.

  91. Cuso says:

HE went 0-2 on every batter this inning. And Nix shoulda been run up there

  92. 15 Day DL says:

    Where the F**K is Nunez?

  93. EDDARD says:

Tip your cap, folks. Roger Clemens shut us down Tuesday, Greg Maddux last night and tonight Sandy Koufax. Sometimes you just have to tip your cap to these great pitchers.

  94. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Wow. Embarrassing inning.

  95. Kramerica Industries says:

You know what would be nice for me to turn the game on to every once and a while?

    A Yankees lead.

I could swear, it’s been forever since I turned on a game for the first time and saw either:

    a) a Yankees lead

    or, hell,

    b) that the Yankees have any runs

  96. Ron says:

Moore looks beastly and with this crappy line up it’s over.

  97. Cy Pettitte says:

8 straight retired, 6 K’s, GIDP, and a pop up. lmfao.

  98. Karl Krawfid says:

This is my worst experience as a Yankee fan ever.

  99. EDDARD says:

“We’re not going to change our philosophy.” I hope he’s saying that next year in the broadcast booth.

    • Herby says:

Please if I have to hear that stupid laugh during games I’ll have to listen to radio broadcasts…and that is bad enough as it is…let him do Cub games.

  100. Will The Thrill says:

Random Fact of the Day: Adam LaRoche has more homeruns than Prince Fielder.

  101. EDDARD says:

Well, Hiroki already lost one 1-0 ballgame vs King Felix. This has the feeling of another. Moore for 8 IP with 16 Ks, Rodney for the 1-2-3 9th.

  102. Will The Thrill says:

Hirok even loses with honor and poise.

  103. Cy Pettitte says:

Did Lou just call Jim Hickey Kevin Hickey?

    • TomH says:

He’s not doddering. He’s just old enough (and well enough off) not to give a shit about such things. Broadcasting’s not his racket. Let ol’ Kay and Singleton worry about such drivel as first names..

  104. Cy Pettitte says:

  105. EDDARD says:

Jeter’s the only man trying out there. Now here comes the K and DP, in that order.

  106. Ok. We have to take advantage of this baserunner. Steal second, bunt him over to third, suicide squeeze to bring him home.

  107. Cy Pettitte says:

    should of bunted

  108. Effthisnoise says:

Gotta love the Rays announcers. “what’s the largest lead The Yankees have ever had and failed to finish in first place?”. I don’t know douche why don’t you ask the 7 people that showed up to the game tonight for your “surging rays”

  109. Stratman9652 says:

Holy shit, something dropped in the Yankee’s favor for a change.

  110. Widget says:

Swisher have fun playing elsewhere next season.

  111. Tony says:

Can’t waist this baserunner. They have been very rare lately

  112. Cy Pettitte says:

time for Arod to put da team on his back

  113. EDDARD says:

We have a RISP! We have a RISP! Now is it time for the DP?

  114. Tony says:

Good job Cano. Arod, please go to a hypnotist to try to get you to think that you are 25 again

  115. Kempire Strikes Back says:

Big opportunity here. They can’t afford to waste it.

  116. Tom says:

    Take a pitch Arod

  117. Herby says:

Is Luke Scott in the running for most stupid looking beard in baseball. I guess that’s his drool channel.
Okay…lets see if they can get something going. A three run shot would be nice…but he’ll probably decide to have Alex bunt.

  118. Chilango says:

Swisher doesn’t know how to bunt. He would have popped it up. As far as first pitch swinging, well, Moore is going right after them so I could see how Swish would swing.

  119. Effthisnoise says:

  120. Tony says:

    Hell yes!!! He did it!

  121. Mike N says:

    FINALLY SOME FUCKING RISPHITTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  122. Kramerica Industries says:

    That’s a big-time hit ARod.

    Get some more runs now.

  123. Chilango says:

    Keep the line moving boys

  124. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

damn punch and judy hitter….didn’t miss his bat at all……throw him a parade……

  125. EDDARD says:

    A-ROD IS BACK, FOLKS!!!!!!!

  126. Cy Pettitte says:

    stuart_a must be feeling conflicted

  127. nsalem says:

    YaY Rod!!!

  128. Tony says:

Lets go Martin. Get us the lead

  129. Stratman9652 says:

Wow. My TV is about a minute behind everyone on here apparently.

  130. Mike N says:

    YEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  131. Jedile says:

    RUSSEL getting it done!

  132. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

  133. Russel, I love you!!!!! I’m sorry I ever said anything negative about you ever.

  134. Kramerica Industries says:

    Atta boy Russell.

    Get some more.

  135. Effthisnoise says:

Now let’s fuck these guys up!

  136. Tony says:

Holy crap. I didnt think this type of run production was possible

  137. Cy Pettitte says:

oh my fucking god did Russell Martin just hit a 2 run double? what is going on?!

  138. Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

Told you guys. We got this, no big deal.

  139. Kempire Strikes Back says:

    Teh clutch doubles!!!!

  140. EDDARD says:

  141. Will The Thrill says:

Rays are such pussies. The pitching coach makes like 20 trips to the mound a game, especially if they’re in danger of being scored upon.

  142. Herby says:

Martin…doubled…I need to change my pants.

  143. nsalem says:

Darkest hour is right before the dawn

  144. WhittakerWalt says:

    Russell Martin, your DH.

  145. Cuso says:

    Holy MOLEY shit!

  146. Widget says:

And as always Granderson ruins all of the fun.

  147. EDDARD says:

Girardi is some genius putting Russel in that 5th spot. Brilliant. At least Curtis moved the runner up.

  148. Tony says:

Arod looks gassed on the bench already

  149. Will The Thrill says:

The only way I’ll feel safe is if they score 10 runs. Thats how bad things are with this team.

  150. So, Robbie walked against a lefty, and Martin hit an XBH…maybe Jones will spring back to life too?

  151. Tom says:

    Signs of life.

ARod turning on a good fastball is a tremendous sign.

Martin simply driving the ball in the air with a runner on 3rd is a good sign as well (hammering it for a double is gravy)

If Jones gets a hit here look out for lightning

  152. Kramerica Industries says:

Hirok-a-dok has got to keep the Rays shut down now.

    No two ways about it.

  153. JonS says:

Raise your hand if you really expected Jones to get a hit there?

  154. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Martin hitting .201 now, so I guess that means he won’t be getting another hit for a while. At least he made it count.

  155. Kempire Strikes Back says:

Hirok! has got this now that we’ve actually provided him some run support.

  156. Patrick says:

Can anyone explain to me hy Andruw is still getting regular ABs? He looks just awful and has all season. Martin’s a young man, you expect him to return to form, but Andruw… Just looks old. Kills rallies.

  157. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    C’mon Hirok. Shutdown inning please.

  158. Tony says:

    Awesome. Keep it going Hirok!

  159. Mike N says:

    See what I’m sayin’??????

  160. JonS says:

    Kuroda #TrueACE lol

  161. Nice shut down inning…some more offense would be great plz?

  162. flamingo says:

Stepped away for supper, just got back. So this is what winning feels like :D

  163. Cy Pettitte says:

    a shut down inning!

  164. EDDARD says:

Hiroki’s the only pitcher on this staff I trust to hold this lead. Did anyone else chuckle when Kay said, Steve Pearce leading off next inning… who would have thought that he would be starting for this team in September.

  165. Two outs offense?! Is that allowed?!?!?!

  166. Mike N says:

  167. Cy Pettitte says:

Jeter is a true leader. stepping up big time and setting and example.

  168. flamingo says:

  169. Karl Krawfid says:

    Keep adding on please.

  170. Chilango says:

The Capt is hot again. Time to step up, Nick

  171. EDDARD says:

Jete making a strong case for MVP. If the leads the Yanks back to the division title I think he’s got it locked up.

  172. Tom says:

    Derek Jeter…. en fuego
(the hit last inning is a line drive in the box score)

  173. So as of Sept 12th the National’s rotation is going to go from Strasburg,Gio,Zimmerman,E-Jax to Gio,Zimmerman,E-Jax,Lannon. That’s still a really good rotation come playoff time.

  174. Kramerica Industries says:

    Holy shit.

Aside from botched renditions, that might’ve been the worst rendition of the National Anthem that I have EVER heard. Way to make the anthem about yourselves instead of the country, you fuckin’ assholes.

  175. JonS says:

    Swish, you suck, bro.

  176. Cy Pettitte says:

what was that? a high slider?

  177. Widget says:

great walk the garbage 9th string outfielder

    # still adjusting to this whole lead thing.

  178. Kramerica Industries says:

Do NOT let another rally begin from a 2 out, 1-2 count situation.

  179. Cy Pettitte says:

I miss Gardy. he catches that easily.

  180. Karl Krawfid says:

    Walk to sam fuld.

    He better get Zobrist.

  181. Chilango says:

Just go after Zobrist stop fuckin around

  182. The Zen Troll says:

Still playing Jones I see . . . I just don’t have any more words for Andruw any more. It’s simply a sad situation.

  183. Karl Krawfid says:

    Come the fuck on.

2 damn strikes. Get the fucking hitter.

  184. Cy Pettitte says:

all with two outs and two strikes. fuck this.

  185. Karl Krawfid says:

    Choke job.

  186. Stratman9652 says:

You know, as many times as I have seen passed balls hit umpires, I have never seen a base ump get hit with a hard line drive. You would think that would happen at least once in a while.

  187. Kramerica Industries says:

You’ve gotta be fucking KIDDING ME.

  188. Anthony says:

THE SECOND I TURN ONT THE TV. My god. Enough with these 0-2 hits!!! Screaming at my TV here.

  189. Hummingbird S. says:

yup, this is our best pitcher… congrats hiroki

  190. WhittakerWalt says:

  191. EDDARD says:

If you have speed that’s what you can do. Too bad we don’t have it.

  192. Cy Pettitte says:

he’s so concerned with the fucking runner that means NOTHING if he just does his job and gets Zobrist. fucking moron.

  193. Kramerica Industries says:

Seriously, now even Hiroki can’t hold the fort down.

This team is so fucked up right now it’s beyond any explanation.

  194. Karl Krawfid says:

2 strike fastball. I mean come the fuck on. No Splitter? Slider? Curve?

    come on man.

  195. Widget says:

This is what happens when you walk garbage like Sam Fuld with 2 outs. You don’t deserve to win the game.

  196. Athenian says:

Just not meant to be Yankees.

  197. Cy Pettitte says:

Kuroda is toast, he has nothing. suffering from Freddy syndrome, can’t finish the 5th.

  198. EDDARD says:

Take this bum out right now. He’s done. Get Eppley and Rapada warming.

  199. Mike N says:

    C’mon, Kuroda. Bear down!!!!!!!!!

  200. The Zen Troll says:

2 Run Triple and a Giant Rookie Fumble. NEW YORK, BABY!!! Life is good!

  201. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Can Andruw Jones not play anymore please?

  202. Anthony says:

I still have faith in Kuroda, but I can basically tell you what is going to happen the rest of the game based on the past month. The Yanks are going to put 0s up for the next 3 innings… the Rays will hit a weak single into the outfield in the 8th…baserunner steals second…another single, ball game over.

  203. TomH says:

Well, For “Greatness,” as Kay calls it, Cano and ARod will have to do it all again.

  204. Damnit…I don’t know if I should laugh or cry. Going out with the guys for the Giant game. Hopefully my absence will benefit the team somehow.

  205. Karl Krawfid says:

    No one on, 2 outs.

  206. Kramerica Industries says:

For what it’s worth, all three games in this series have featured an inning where the Rays scored despite having two outs, and no baserunners.

Then you wonder why this team can’t buy a win right now.

  207. The Zen Troll says:

Moment I put the game feed on Hiroki walks and lets up the triple. Troll’s fault. All is well, folks. Don’t worry, be happy.

  208. Cy Pettitte says:

    9 K’s through 5 2/3 just wow.

  209. The Zen Troll says:

The Yankees are whiffing like mad! Good things to come!

  210. Athenian says:

Pitchers can get Cano on that pitch all day long. He always swings an never hits it.

  211. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Russ again!!!!

  212. Mike N says:

    RUSSELL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YIPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  213. Kramerica Industries says:

    Motherfucking Mussell to the rescue.

    Don’t blow another lead.

  214. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

  215. Anthony says:

OH MY GOD. Martin just tore through the Mendoza line.

  216. Cy Pettitte says:

thank fucking god for Russell having a good game. now maybe hold this lead for, I don’t know, 4 innings.

  217. EDDARD says:

That’s why you’ve gotta stick with these guys. People wanted Martin benched before the game for Cervelli. He’s showing them all why they were dead wrong.

  218. Widget says:

Martin going deep? What the hell?

  219. Cy Pettitte says:

lol Granderson might finish with a lower BA than Russell.

  220. Jimmy Is Key To David's Cone says:

  221. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Okay now bring in Lowe.

  222. Cy Pettitte says:

Blue Jays take the lead 3-2 with a safety squeeze!

  223. flamingo says:

  224. RkyMtnYank says:

Guess Russ just needed to feel important again batting in the fifth spot.

  225. EDDARD says:

But can our pitchers hold a lead? We’ve lost 2 games lately because our best pitchers haven’t been able to hold a lead. Kuroda already gave up one lead. He needs to pitch one more and we’ll use Robertson and Soriano to get through 3 innings.

CC- Failed to hold 3-2 lead
Hughes – Failed to hold 3-1 lead
Kuroda – Failed to hold 3-1 lead

  226. The Zen Troll says:

Russel Martin will carry the Yankees into the playoffs. Russel Martin is back! Yankees are back! GOOD THINGS TO COME!

  227. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Get it done, Hirok.

  228. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Russell tonight:
    .667/.667/2.000 631 wRC+ 1.097 wOBA 1.333 ISO

  229. Cy Pettitte says:

    and lead gone. fucking loser.

  230. The Zen Troll says:

Even the Zen Troll can’t say just HOW bad Curtis Granderson. The Zen Troll is blind to Grandy’s horrendous season. Zen Troll believes Curtis will be a force to reckon with!

  231. Kramerica Industries says:

    Jesus Christ.

  232. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

  233. Stratman9652 says:

    I can’t even right now.

  234. Anthony says:

lol. time to take Kuroda out. Except our bullpen minus Sori and D-Rob will just give up more runs.

  235. JonS says:

It’s like it’s just not meant to be…

  236. EDDARD says:

LOL! What a joke this team is. Just die already.

  237. Hummingbird S. says:

down to zero reliable starters.. this team is going places

  238. Cy Pettitte says:

Hiroki, it’s seppuku time. you fucking suck.

  239. Anthony says:

I miss the days where I could enjoy a yankee lead for more than 10 minutes

  240. Athenian says:

    When you suck, you suck.

  241. The Zen Troll says:

Zen Troll believes that the Yankee pitchers will finally learn to hold a lead. A CHANGE IS COMING!

  242. Widget says:

I turn away for like a second and they are tied? Damn it Kuroda.

  243. Kramerica Industries says:

First home run for Scott since JULY 19.

    Think about that.

  244. Cy Pettitte says:

ANOTHER 2 out walk. just perfect.

  245. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Walk more shitty hitters please.

  246. The Zen Troll says:

    Positive, happy thoughts!

  247. Kempire Strikes Back says:

  248. Chilango says:

2 out walk. Here comes the CF. Larry tell Kuroda to concentrate on Johnson this time.

  249. Tom says:

2 out walks with noone on base to weak hitters…. you just can’t do that. Make them hit their way on with 2 out. (It’d be different if it was someone like Pena or Longoria)

It burned him last inning, hopefully he can avoid damage here.

  250. Cy Pettitte says:

Jays now up 6-2 at least.

  251. Widget says:

Walking a garbage 10th string catcher with two outs. Nah, no way that’s gonna bite them in the ass.

  252. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Fire the entire pitching rotation and make Joba a starter!!!

  253. EDDARD says:

Joba in a tie game, might as well leave Hiroki in there if you want to lose.

  254. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

What does s/a mean? Kabak uses it in about 90% of his tweets.

  255. Mike N says:

Phew. Now we need some serious runs.

  256. Kramerica Industries says:

So, strangely enough, one can argue the offense has done its job tonight…and Kuroda has blown two leads.

This is the perfect example of one side remembering to be shit when the other side isn’t.

  257. Kramerica Industries says:

Another fact to chew on – the last five times the Yankees have taken the lead in a game, they have surrendered that lead.

Sunday, Monday, yesterday, and twice today.

  258. Anthony says:

Did Jones just… no, it can’t be

  259. Kempire Strikes Back says:

Jones looked surprised when he hit that single.

  260. The Zen Troll says:

The tides have turned. Andruw Jones is back, Jack!!!

  261. JonS says:

That’s probably his first career Pinch run. lol

  262. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

  263. Kramerica Industries says:

    Promising start.

What dismal end shall it meet? Discuss!

  264. Mike N says:

    NOW BUNT MOTHERFUCKER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  265. The Zen Troll says:

Ichiro won’t get caught stealing. Impossible, baby!!! This team is going the distance!

  266. Tom says:

Professional ballplayer needs to do the professional thing here.

  267. Mike N says:

    BUNT, DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!

  268. Mikhel says:

This is the last game of the series so, following one of the JoeG rules, that means Chamberlain will pitch. Ugh.

  269. Kempire Strikes Back says:

Professional baseball player with a professional play.

  270. Mike N says:

    YEHA!!!!!!!!!!! NICE BUNT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  271. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Nice job.
They should PR Dickerson for Pearce.

  272. Anthony says:

Looks like this was what K-long was talking about. Nix almost beat that, to boot.

  273. Mike N says:

I really love a nice bunt.

  274. JLC 776 says:

Alright, Cap’n… a hit when it can really count now….

  275. Widget says:

Can’t wait to see how they mess this up.

  276. EDDARD says:

That’s how you play baseball. Here comes our old friend Farnsworth. Better score 2 just to be sure we don’t blow yet another lead.

  277. The Zen Troll says:

  278. Stratman9652 says:

Am I the only one who thinks bunting with a struggling team is even dumber than with a strong offense? Every time a team struggles people suggest bunting more. I would think giving away out when a team already isn’t making the most of the ones they have is counterproductive.

  279. flamingo says:

Was that a strike? It looked like it was on Gameday.

  280. Cy Pettitte says:

    hooray for errors!!!

  281. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Hell yes!!!!

    Better lucky than good.

  282. Kramerica Industries says:

Oh what a huge break that is.

  283. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

lmao Elliot Johnson I FUCKING HATE you.

  284. Kempire Strikes Back says:

    YESSSSSSSSSS! LOL@Rays defense

  285. Mike N says:

You know what I love even more than a nice bunt? A FUCKING ERROR LIKE THAT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  286. Anthony says:

YES! Didn’t even waste an out. If we give this lead up I’m done for the season. I wish D-Rob could pitch the 7th too….

  287. Tom says:

Wow… that worked out far better than it should have.

    Have Jetes steal 3rd now…

  288. Cy Pettitte says:

    woo Jeet!

  289. Effthisnoise says:

    Yanks waking up!

  290. EDDARD says:

Jete got the job done yet again. MVP is his if we can hold onto this lead and the division.

  291. Anthony says:

I f*ckin love this aggressiveness! We are making them look like idiots!!

  292. Chilango says:

Finally pressuring the other team . Nice

  293. RkyMtnYank says:

Wow, nice to see some fucking lively baseball being played!

  294. EDDARD says:

SB for Jeter! That’s small ball, folks. And it’s working!

  295. Cuso says:

If not for Elliot Johnson, we wouldn’t even be in this game

  296. Laz says:

    Ah, Good ol’ Farnsworth.

  297. The Zen Troll says:

  298. Cy Pettitte says:

wow Swish that’s pathetic. can’t even hit a sac fly?

  299. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Swisher is completely lost at the plate right now.

  300. Chilango says:

Swisher can’t hit the slider either.

  301. Kempire Strikes Back says:

Swisher I can’t believe how bad you’re playing right now.

  302. The Zen Troll says:

ARod gonna do what ARod does! GRAN’ SALAMI KING IS BACK!!!

  303. Effthisnoise says:

Now don’t give up hits or walks to scrubs

  304. EDDARD says:

Lead isn’t big enough. Either Hiroki or Joba will cough it up. I’d use Robertson and Soriano for 3 innings to get the W.

  305. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Can they please hold onto this lead?

    Pretty please?

    With a cherry on top?

  306. Mike N says:

    C’mon! Everybody!

  307. JonS says:

So Girardi actually made a move that made sense. And it worked out. Imagine that…

  308. The Zen Troll says:

Ok . . . Even Zen Troll is going to have a hard time defending the 2, (3), and 4 hitters completely shitting the bed . . . Let’s go Yankees. WOOO!!!

  309. Tom says:

Why is Eppley up in the pen?

After Logan shouldn’t it be Robertson/Soriano for however many outs?

  310. Kempire Strikes Back says:

    I envy the Washington Nationals.

  311. Mike N says:

I have no idea why Eppley and D-Rob would both be warming up.

  312. JonS says:

Umm wouldn’t Robertson be warming with 1 out in the 7th with a lead to pitch in the 8th?

  313. Kramerica Industries says:

    A four pitch walk.

    And now we sweat again.

  314. Cy Pettitte says:

    stop walking people, mother fuckers.

  315. WhittakerWalt says:

Here comes the endless matchups bullshit.

  316. The Zen Troll says:

Walk one of the Rays’ fastest players. WOO-HOO! Let’s go PINSTRIPES!

  317. Chilango says:

No way they’re letting Eppley pitch

  318. EDDARD says:

The big matchup is DRob vs Longoria. Logan should be able to strike out Zobrist with a slider down and in.

  319. Kramerica Industries says:

    Sit the hell down, Zobrist.

  320. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Next time without the walk, Boone.

  321. Effthisnoise says:

    Rays are stealing signs

  322. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Wouldn’t Dickerson in left and Swisher at 1B be better defensively.
I don’t really get why they didn’t just PR Dickerson for Pearce last inning.

  323. Cy Pettitte says:

    no high socks?? wtf.

  324. Tom says:

Girardi did this one well…. Logan against Jennings was not a great matchup but he did it to keep Zobrist on the weaker side (righty). Up 2 runs that’s a pretty good tradeoff.

I just have no idea why Eppley was up at all… I shudder to think that if Logan had not gotten the first lefty out, Girardi might have called on Eppley for Jennings.

  325. Kramerica Industries says:

    Low socks DRob tonight.

He must be serious business. As I say that, he allows a base hit.

    Go figure.

  326. Kramerica Industries says:

  327. Cy Pettitte says:

  328. Mike N says:

    MVP DEFENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!

  329. Anthony says:

  330. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Phew! Thanks Cap.

  331. Kempire Strikes Back says:

  332. EDDARD says:

The MVP saves a run. What a ballplayer.

  333. Tom says:

    Jeter doesn’t panic!

  334. Dan in Athens says:

    Captain Clutch

  335. Effthisnoise says:

Fucking Jete is grown! Hope he didn’t tweak something there

  336. The Zen Troll says:

Grandy with the extra base hit coming up! YEAH, BOYS!

  337. Kempire Strikes Back says:

  338. Cy Pettitte says:

Grandy should take a day or two off. Dickerson in CF.

  339. Dan in Athens says:

Fuck you Orioles. Keep losing and die.

  340. JonS says:

They need to bat Granderson 8th or 9th. He’s now as much an auto-out as Jones and Ichiro.

  341. WhittakerWalt says:

    God, Granderson sucks ass.

  342. Mike N says:

What an offensively anemic outfield we have right now: Swisher, Grandy, Jones, Raul, Ichiro.

  343. Chilango says:

    Granderson is completely lost.

  344. The Zen Troll says:

Zen Troll says that Granderson needs to be benched for at least a week. The man adds nothing to this lineup or defense. GOOOO YANKEES!

  345. Kramerica Industries says:

    Quick and painless.

    Please, DRob.

  346. Effthisnoise says:

Girardi looks so stressed in the dugout

  347. Cy Pettitte says:

    nasty cut fastball

  348. your mom says:

    What happened to DRob’s velo?

    • Tom says:

I sense a new RAB (Mike Axisa) meme listening to the YES crew

Nix with the bunt that turned the season around? (or do I dishonor Wise by suggesting this)

  349. Kramerica Industries says:

    Big K there.

Now it’s MFIKY time. No screwing around. Finish those motherfuckers.

  350. EDDARD says:

One inning away from that elusive W. Finish it and we’re back in 1st alone.

  351. Kempire Strikes Back says:

Oh shit. Chris Gimenez is in the game.

  352. The Zen Troll says:

Fuck load of strikeouts! WOO-HOO! Watch out, baseball, the Yankees are back!

  353. Cy Pettitte says:

Wade Davis in short relief = wow. big fastball velo and that cutter was nasty.

  354. Kramerica Industries says:

  355. The Zen Troll says:

15 K, 2 BB! These Yankees are invincible! Nobody can stop them!

  356. your mom says:

The Ray’s pen looks solid. Their pitching can get them to the WS easily. The offense is another story. I can’t imagine how good they’d be if they actually spent money on free agents.

  357. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Hey guys, our pitcher went less than seven innings and gave up more than three runs and we’re still winning!

The offense SCORED after a setback! I had forgotten what that felt like. IT is so sweet.

  358. Mike N says:

  359. Anthony says:

Nix’s bunt turned the season around. You heard it here first.

  360. Mike N says:

  361. Kramerica Industries says:

    Finish them right here.

  362. Cy Pettitte says:

    holy fuck, a win!

  363. Dan in Athens says:

  364. your mom says:

Wow, the Rays’ fan base sucks balls. No wonder they can’t afford any good free agents.

  365. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

What does it mean when the game ends and the Yankees have more runs than the other team?

  366. Effthisnoise says:

Now let’s go fuck up Baltimore

  367. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Russell Martin batting fifth saved the season.
(or Elliot Johnson playing 2B saved the season)

  368. The Zen Troll says:

  369. Mike N says:

That win felt really AWESOME!!!!!!!! Like how when you’ve been sick as a dog and just puking and moaning and groaning and sweating, and then finally you feel halfway decent for a few hours and you know you aren’t gonna die: AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  370. Kempire Strikes Back says:

The Yankees need to at least split this series against the O’s.

  371. EDDARD says:

Back in sole possession of 1st. Now to take 3/4 in Baltimore.

  372. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

That look in Russell’s eyes…he knows he’s totally gonna bang Meredith tonight.

  373. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Looks like that little technical error in the schedule has been corrected.

  374. edmond says:

I am a happy man tonight!!!!!! Thank you for everyone and their prayers!!!!!
