Game 140: End of the trip
ByWhen this ten-game stretch against the Orioles and Rays started last weekend, the Yankees were three games up on Baltimore and four up on Tampa. Following three wins in nine games, they’re now tied with the O’s and just two ahead of the Rays. They’ve struggled offensively, the starting pitchers are seemingly unable to protect a lead, and the bullpen can’t go a game without allowing the opponent to tack on runs. A win today moves the Yankees back into first by one game, but something tells me it won’t be easy. Here’s the starting lineup…
DH Derek Jeter
RF Nick Swisher
3B Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
C Russell Martin
1B Steve Pearce
LF Andruw Jones
SS Jayson Nix
CF Ichiro Suzuki
RHP Freddy Garcia
Today’s game starts a little after 1:30pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and TBS nationally. Enjoy.

What a long, strange trip its been.
And disappointing. Don’t forget disappointing.
A loss today would mean all three series’ were lost. It would also give the Orioles the tiebreaker in the event the Yankees and O’s finish in a tie in the standings.
A fortunate thing for the Yankees is they only have three games left against the Rays/O’s, while the Rays and O’s still play six against each other. An unfortunate thing is that the A’s (who, quietly, now have the 2nd best record in the AL) are on the schedule. Hopefully the Yankees get a measure of revenge for the disaster in Oakland.
And shitty. Don’t forget shitty.
Sometimes the lights all shining on me, other times I can barely see.
This is Freddy’s last stand. Nova’s back and will either take the spot of Phelps or Freddy. We need a good outing from him in this must win game.
can sumbody please exaplin me what the fuck cc was thinking when he hit Markakis? there is a reason why the 0s are called the fighting Os. don’t blame buck when jeter gets hit in the leg and brakes his ankle adn is out for the year
That’s fine. They could use the baserunners.
not a fact that he wil get on base with that idoit behind the catcher
Maybe it was an accident.
oh yes sure leading hitter of an opposing team in a heat of penant race is hit and brakes his hand but its an acident? come on thats just dumb
You’re dumb!
Welcome back!
Over or Under: Freddy goes 5 innings
under, I think if he gets into trouble early they are bringing in Nova.
Easy under. A more interesting over/under would be 4.1 IP.
Texeira now might miss the remainder of the season.
I haven’t been able to determine this or not, but did the umpires not face the media last night? I mean, that’s the usual practice when they fuck up an important call.
Need to win to even up the season series. Losing would give O’s tiebreaker in certain scenarios.
*sigh*
Guess I picked a good week to be on vacation, it was nice to get away from all this for a few days. I’m back now, so the Yankees should maybe do the same. Sweat the good sweat, Freddy.
Looks like you picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue.
I’m confused.
Sniffing glue will do that to you.
Is this a meme I missed over the last few days?
Airplane reference. I’m ashamed of you.
Haha I just watched this same video to make sure it was amphetamines and not methamphetamine.
Thanks. I’ve seen it, but it was too long ago for me to catch that reference. I just assumed it was a meme from a game thread I missed over the last week.
Looks like I quit the wrong week to quit amphetamines.
Over/under Freddy gives up 2.5 HR?
If he’s left in long enough for the over, I hope Cashman goes Girardi on Girardi after the game.
Feel the pressure Britton. Feel it.
Over, he’ll give up 3
Over under 12 swings and misses by Andruw Jones on the same 3 pitches that Jeter just took.
Over/under 5 over/under questions in this thread?
This is fun.
I’ll take that.
Here’s to a 14-3 Yankee blow out win today. Pressure is on the O’s.
That would be oh so sweet!
looking pretty good, nice call
Dude you are psychic
People don’t want to listen to me
Glad I was right on this one..
Have a bad feeling about Garcia’s outing…hopefully I’m wrong. Wouldn’t it be nice to have Swisher and/or Granderson pick up Tex’s RBI spot?
ESPN’s telling me that Teixera could very well be out for the “remainder of the season”?
Good AB Swish.
Dear Yankees,
I will do a shot every run you score. I hope I don’t make it past the 3rd inning.
Sincerely,
Guy Who Doesn’t Have To Wake Up For Work Tomorrow
FUCK!!!!
sigh
of course
lol.
Unpredictable double play is unpredictable, right?
God ARod is slow.
That broken hand sure seems to have sapped ARod’s speed.
hahahaha
thank freaking god.
Nice one Robbie. Shot for JJ.
Done and done. Actually, I’m supposed to be at work tomorrow. I just have to wake up early enough to call out sick, then go back to bed
I have to do something for the job I’m going for, but that’s not until 1:30.
Twitpics or it didn’t happen.
…you are Sterling Archer. It’s official.
Now I just need to find someone as hot as Lana to bang.
Thank you for salvaging something there, Robbie!
Trying to pull the sinkerball makes anyone a DP machine. So, great job Alex.
Game = over. Freddy’s got this shit on lock.
Well we all know what happens next. The Yanks scored their 1 run, the bats will now go silent until the 8th inning.
Don’t jinx it!
Maybe because I said it, we’ll actually score 12 runs next inning. Anti-jinx
So am I the only one here who thinks people in the Girardi/Sherman thread where very overly critical of Sherman? If Girardi just says “Yes I was talking about CC” then the story ends there.
I think no one’s at fault as much as Marchand, who publicly tweeted and wrote about a private confrontation.
I think it’s wrong to blame Marchand. If he doesn’t tweet and report it somebody else does. Also if his editor finds out he DIDN’T report it he’s in huge trouble. If the manager/boss/politician of the organization, gets into a fight with a reporter and you don’t report it?!?!?! That’s a career killer. Your editor is never going to trust you to get the scoop again.
There is nothing “private” when someone like Girardi is dealing with a reporter.
I don’t know, I’d consider it private. The only thing caught on video is Girardi rolling his eyes when Sherman asked the question again. Apparently after that they had a confrontation in his office. I’d consider that pretty private. And it’s interesting that Sherman’s article about last night’s game makes no mention of it.
Well, before they really got into it in his office he probably told Sherman all of this is off the record. However, that doesn’t stop Marchand from reporting simply what he observed (that the two got into a shouting match) also, if the rest of the media was still in the clubhouse there is no way it can be considered private.
Fair point, especially if Sherman made no mention of it in his article. But I think it’s pretty easy to get burned dealing with reporters.
I think the whole thing is overblown. I don’t really care one way or another.
You can’t deny perception is everything though. This looks really bad for both Girardi and Sherman. Both walk away looking much worse in the eyes of the general (mouth breathing) public.
Yeah, probably. I just usually perceive other people’s actions as if I were in there shoes. Remaining calm in his situation, all things considered, is so much easier said than done. Look at some of the comments on these game threads, most people would be fired in a week. As far as Sherman goes, maybe he didn’t hear the other questions, maybe not. I don’t know. Other people may perceive this all differently, but I don’t view either of them differently.
I find hit hard to look at it objectively personally, because I am an aspiring journalist, and last time I went to school I wound up sports editor of the college paper. Trying to get a coach to answer questions openly when the team is losing of just terrible (as every team at BCC was) is very, very difficult.
or just terrible* Thank god I’m not an editor anymore. My EIC would murder me if she saw half my posts on this site.
Fair enough, I can imagine. Which is why I won’t really give Sherman crap about it. And considering Girardi (and the Yankees overall) situation, I won’t give him crap about it either. Should Sherman have been either paying attention, or not badgering Girardi with question he already answered? Sure. Should Girardi have kept his cool more? Sure. As far as I’m concerned, neither one is right and neither one is wrong. That washes out to a non-issue for me.
So…Sterling just said that if Garcia gets through 5 to go right to Lowe,Epply,Rappada, and Logan…am I the only one who is not okay with that plan?
Don’t question his baseball genius.
Go to three terrible pitchers and one been who’s overused to the point of worthlessness?
That guy should be a GM.
Down Freddy down!
Please stop trying to pull the sinker.
Please stop trying to pull the sinker!!!!
Never mind. You guys just keep pulling grounders to the shortstop. That works.
That 0-1 pitch is the only pitch I would ever throw to Jones. I’ve been saying it since he cooled off after that Boston series, he cannot hit it.
I know the Red Sox series still counts, but what has he done this year outside of that? I’d love to hear the actual numbers.
Prior to Boston:
.230/.323/.451 (7 hrs.)
Since Boston:
.146/.230/.247 (2 hrs)
Holy fuck.
Boston series: 357/357/1.214 4HR, 6 RBI
Everything else: 193/283/361 9 HR, 25 RBI
Andruw helps to start getting the pitchcount under control.
With Teixeira out again, and with Granderson disarmed, it’s once again a short lineup.
Cleanup hitter tries to bunt his way on against Freddy Garcia.
lmao
Say what you want about Freddy but he’s doing what our ace could not, hold down the Os offense.
Wait until next inning when the Orioles make adjustments and crush him.
This is a good time to throw Reynolds a BP fastball.
I think I’m done watching Andruw Jones wave at every pitch. I’ve been a supporter all year, but man he looks done. Is there an alternative? At all? Idk, maybe Girardi gets creative, but it hasn’t been pretty.
At this point I’d rather have Zolio Almonte or Melky Mesa up to play the OF. They’d probably suck too but probably not as bad as Jones is right now.
Imagine if the past 5 years of his career had been even average. We’d be talking about his Hall of Fame chances.
It’s getting to the point where we can ask is Eric Chavez really that much worse vs lefties than Andruw? And don’t give me a 30 AB sample size to back that up. Try something else, Joe.
Chavez has a career wRC+ of 85 against lefties, and that includes all of his good years. In a smaller sample, he has a wRC+ of 1 this year against lefties. Yes, 1. 62 wRC+ last year.
Jones has a wRC+ of 85 against lefties this year, and had a 151 mark last year.
So yes, Jones has been bad this year. But Chavez could be even worse against lefties.
1) Chavez can’t handle playing everyday
2) Chavez doesn’t play OF (not that Jones really does either)
3) Chavez hasn’t hit vs. lefties in years
There are better options. Chavez isn’t one of them.
Is Nix in the OF a better option? I’m really struggling to find one here. Granderson/Ichiro in the OF against lefties is ugly, but I’m not sure if it’s as ugly as Jones right now.
Maybe, but Nix is the kind of player that will get exposed quickly playing every day too. I get the sense that the Yankees would rather keep him in part time duty to spell A-Rod, Jeter, and Cano every once in awhile.
Well, Nix has already been playing everyday against lefties. The whole Jones/Ibanez platoon has turned into a mess in the second half. It seems amazing that there’s no alternative right now.
Yeah, and it seems that they would rather keep him in the infield on those lefty starts. It’s far from an ideal situation, but I don’t know what options are better than Andruw.
I’d rather see that. Or give Dickerson a shot (at least you’d get defense). Or McGehee 1B, Nix 3B, Pearce OF, Nunez SS/DH.
Melky Mesa and Ronnier Mustelier are the alternatives.
Jete’s looking really gimpy too. I was thinking the same thing on that infield single when he ran to 2nd on the error. Not good.
D.J. not running well is AN ISSUE! Unlike most of you I think that’s why Granderson’s sitting – he’s hurting from being overplayed.
Jeter looked like he injured himself running from first to second in the first inning. Been limping since. This might have been mentioned prior, but just joining.
Ouch. At first I thought that hit him on a line, rather than a bounce. Either way….. bats have been silent since the 1st……..
Swisher 0 for last 27.
Wow. It’s amazing how neutralized the Yankees are against lefties/groundball pitchers.
Are the Yankees gonna have to blow this lead before they start hitting and come up short?
the games i get to watch are so far and few between. let’s win this one boys.
I haven’t voted in the confidence poll in a couple of weeks. Actually think I’ll be a 6 this week. Considering a 5.
Like the handle change. You stating your new prospect crush?
Sorry, stepped away… Yep, totally.
Garcia has been awesome so far, averaging just over 10 pitches per inning, not a whole lot of hard contact, hopefully he can get us through 6?
Nice Freddy. But I think I speak for every Yankees fan everywhere when I say that 1 run is not enough for him, so let’s get some breathing room offense!
I’ll settle for a ball in the air right now.
From your lips to A-Rod’s ears. If only that was a little higher.
It sucks that that’s only a single
The difference between a HR and a single there was, like, an inch.
…how are you only on 1st?! was he hot-dogging the homer trot?
The O’s broadcast didn’t show A-Rod out of the box, so I dunno. But that ball was hit pretty hard and Davis bare-handed it off the wall.
He hasn’t been running well lately
nice almost OppoBomb by A-Rod… woulda been nice to see him muscle out a double there…
COUNTERPOINT: He mighta stayed at 1st in order to combat RISPFAIL…
#drinkinthaKoolAid
Ubersmallball time.
Prediction swisher won’t hit200 the rest of the way . He cannot hit in playoff pressure type gameyou wanna sign this guy for 15 million a year?
Prediction: you will make this same prediction over and over and over.
Did you make that prediction was Swisher was essentially carrying the offense for 2 weeks? He’s in a slump now, for sure, but he can bounce back just as quickly.
Is it too much to ask for them not to hit into another DP here?
From your lips to Britton’s ears.
Granted, it would be harder now.
I would actually like a bunt here, Rusty.
NOT NEEDED
You know your command isn’t on today when you walk Robbie without him swinging at all.
IETC
lol
Britton’s trying to hand us this ballgame. Let’s score multiple runs here.
holy inconsistent calls behind the plate Batman!
Hell yeah, no DP now. Let’s go Russ, win Betty’s heart back!
Lets do some damage here boys.
this is going to sound terrible but I can see this happening: Martin walking, Pearce K’ing, and Jones hitting into a 5-4-3. That’s just my pessimist talking.
There’s part 1.
Sooooo happy I was wrong
With all the negativity about Joel Sherman if you read his article on some of the moves made this year – well, he’s pretty right on-
Well, the double play is back on now.
Time to put up a crooked number no excuses.
If they don’t my excuse is the existence of Andruw Jones in the line up.
uh… were robbie and arod arguing?
yeah, it was about whats for dinner. I think I lip read A Rod saying something about “Pad Thai”
obviously robbie is just sick of thai food.
dont you HAVE to score a run here? isnt it in the rulebook? bases juiced no outs and the pitcher cant find the plate….
Weiter’s glasses would be distracting as hell if I was pitching… just sayin
Take a strike.
the guy can’t throw a strike. gotta blow this open here, no excuses.
Pearce should put the bat down until he proves he can throw a strike.
So should everyone else too.
Wow Britton has no idea where the ball is going right now. Please take advantage.
Steven. I approve
Take a strike Andruw.
More runs, please.
Put Zach away NOW
niiiiiiiiiiice
Jones is toast. time to retire.
Jonesy….
Andruw Jones continues to show it’s been a long time since he crossed the line into being completely worthless.
Step 1: Take Andruw out behind the barn.
Step 2: Put him out of his misery.
Only Andruw could strike out on 3 pitches after he had just walked 3 straight men. Now here comes the DP to get him out of the inning.
whoa… Andruw was drooling at that 1st pitch. so much so that he hacked at the 2nd pitch off the plate, and hung out for the 3rd
Not the kind of problem you’re supposed to have with veterans’ presents
And here comes rally killer jones…..after all those walks he strikes out on 3 straight pitches
Fuck Andruw. At least a DP there would have scored a run.
Listening on the radio, but let me guess exactly what happened on that 0-1 pitch: Andruw swung as hard as you’ve ever seen anybody swing over the top of the sinker and missed spectacularly.
You got it. I couldn’t have put it better myself. And to top it all off he took a pitch down the middle for strike three.
you’ve been here before, huh
also, the swing was Sheffield-ian, damn near Ruben Sierra-esque in its verocity
Every single time. If I was an opposing manager/pitching coach I would scream at a pitcher who gets beat by Andruw on anything but that pitch.
Jeez. I’d rather have Melky Mesa Or Zoilo Almonte up here at this point. Jones looks like a little leaguer out there.
Joe must hate MeGehee cause he has power
Jones will be the left off the hopeful playoff roster right? Right???
Seriously. For the life of me, I can’t understand running him out there every time there’s a lefty on the mound so he can flail about and humiliate himself. And kill rallies.
BASEBALL PLAYERZZZZ!!
BASEBALL PLAYER
That’ll work.
More runs.
Nix should be the LF from now on vs lefties. Gives us a much better chance at contact.
Professional Baseball Player.
(Take notes Andruw)
Fuck, how horrible is Andruw Jones?
look at Nix contributing. Andruw, take note please
Keep the line moving
I hope they have some nice golf couses in Curucao.
Hahahaha IETC.
Seriously though, he’s had a HOF type career. Time to hit the links Andruw.
Wow look at that pitch count
Ichiro!!!
hahh fuck your luck Orioles.
Check that out, we can hit really poorly and STILL score runs!
Hah.
Baltimore victimized by their own chop.
MOAR!!!!
Lol as if they have any right to complain.
Oh STFU Reynolds
Make up call. Too late you fucks
How is it a makeup call? He was safe.
He was safe. It was close, but he was definitely safe.
Nice!!!!! How do you like that call Buck
HAHAHAHA the BABIP Gods are helping us out after the blown call last night.
Also, the Camden Yards is playing Bob Marley. Awesome.
Baltimore Chop for tha win!!!!
*resisting the urge to make “Baltimore Chop-Stick” joke
Fuck you Buck, Suck it up.
Amazing what happens when the proper call at first is made.
HAHA fuck you o’s!
watch, now O’s fans will be claiming we’re even.
ESPN headline: Orioles ROBBED in controversial infield hit.
I don’t feel comfortable with any lead with freddy. More please.
Bet the oriols network shos THAT replay a million times
safe or not? orioles broadcast had terrible view.
safe.
looked safe on replay
I’m on the O’s telecast too, looked safe to me.
safe… bang bang though
SMALLBALL FTW
Extended rallies like this happen ALL THE TIME in the playoffs!!!
Seriously, though, I’m glad it’s happening now.
Mark Reynolds is such a little bitch. Over celebrating the last out yesterday and being overly dramatic about that last call. Who does he think he is? I guess the little hot streak he’s been on really went to his head.
Britton’s been on an incredible run too. But he really has trouble throwing strikes against the Yankees.
Anything but a GIDP please. So since I asked it’s gonna be a GIDP
swung @ ball 4… twice
Orioles broadcast showed two views of that replay. Yesterday they showed only one and only after going to commercial and starting the postgame show.
More runs…
Hahaha this Britton implosion is awesome.
just need about 5 more runs so I can start relaxing a bit
Nice AB by Jeter.
Britton was just TRYING to walk Jeter, but Jeter had to see one rolled to him to not swing.
pretty funny
We haven’t had one hard hit ball since A-Rod. I love it.
cmon yanks 1 more run and I can order papa jonns tomorrow….
I’m gonna go ahead and take credit for all of this. Clearly, the Yankees want me to be drunk today.
love itttttt
The only possible explanation is that Britton didn’t BUCKle up.
So if we hold onto this game: before the series the general concencious was win the series, but a split wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. Considering how we lost the two games (heart breaking failure by D-Rob and blown call) I think we should actually feel pretty good about this.
Yeah, it’s not as if the O’s dominated us in those two losses. Both were pretty close.
Ah. This reminds me of the good old times when the Yankees used to walk all over the Orioles and Rays. Good times, good times.
Seriously, keep it going. A big hit by Swish would be some kind of wonderful.
Any hit by Swisher would be wonderful
More runs would be fantastic.
Let’s than greatest manager ever Buck Showalter leaving Britton in too long
Does Buck like leaving his pitchers in too long?
Sherman just tweeted “#Yankees up 5-0. If this blow out, wonder if #Orioles retaliate at some point for CC (I believe unintentionally) fracturing Markakis thumb.”
if they do this they are the scum of baseball. Markakis was hit with 2 outs 0-2 in a tight game with no intention.
Fuck Sherman. Trying to start shit cause he needs a nearing aid.
Let’s thank greatest manager ever Buck Showalter leaving Britton in too long
Nick…it’s actually garbage time. It’s time to break out of this deadness you’ve been in.
The Yanks need to finish them, coup de grace and all that.
Unfortunately, a long time for ol Freddy to be sitting.
hooray… Arrieta cant find the plate either
Swisher is still lost, even in this inning.
Swisher and jones are so bad.
Swish is so bad, at least he only made 1 out I guess. Do some damage now Alex.
That’s a nasty cutter though
91 mph cutter right down the middle after you fouled off a fastball the other way that was only 4 mph faster. How do you strike out on that pitch? Embarrassing.
Damnit Swish. I think he needs to sit a game…just to clear his head a little bit. Thank god for the off day tomorrow, maybe that’ll help.
Yankees are gonna have a lot of money come off the books.
Getting under the cap for 2014 is looking easier by the day.
that was a FUCKING SICK cutter by Arrieta.
Hughes/D-Rob: be aware, if you aint doing it like that, then dont do it.
Fuck you Nick. You should be batting tenth
Grandy and Swisher in this series have reminded us why it’s a bad idea to sign them to extensions.
That was a check.
ARod did NOT go around.
Yeah, looked like he held up to me as well.
He didn’t go, come on.
Still don’t feel confident with 5 runs
God, Nick. Just lost.
How many calls are They gonna fucking blow!!!
yuck. 4 runs is great but with Freddy on the mound another hit or two would have been nice.
really Alex?
although, looks like he held up in the replay. but still dude
lol at this YES commercial: “Flanagan’s Reward Program”
That’s disrespectful to Flanny.
What can you even say at this point? That was not even close to a swing. Remind me why we don’t have replay yet?
Could have blown it open. Jones and Swisher are automatic outs. ARod got fooled. Will 5 be enough for Freddy?
He checked.
More runs there would have been nice. But then again the Yankees have sucked at scoring insurance runs/blowing it open all year. Nothing new.
Two things going forward-
Freddy gave us everything we needed today and did what CC could not, win a big ballgame in a pennant race. He will keep his rotation spot, Phelps is out.
Nix should play in LF vs lefties instead of Andruw. Britton walked 3 straight men and there’s only two players in the league who could then strike out on 3 straight pitches. One of them is Andruw and the other is Granderson. Neither should play the field vs lefties.
Freddy has pitched 3 innings so far.
You’re jumping the gun a bit.
Dude, the fourth inning *just* started.
the fuck is wrong with 1b umps this series?
Get the pen up please.
No way. No outs in the 4th and only 1 runner on with a 5 run lead? Plus, the pen has mostly sucked lately.
Great, gritty inning right there but why is Andruw Jones still getting at-bats during a pennant race?
Because Girardi plays favorites instead of putting the best team on the field possible.
Nice way to start the inning, Freddy.
Holy shit! Mclouth was looking to walk there. Come on!
Really?
5-0 and you walk Nate McClouth (on at least 5 balls out of the zone)
That’s it
Wow, 0-2 plunk?
Is Freddy serious?
NOOOOOO
Jesus Christ.
Get the pen up.
Really Freddy?!?! Fuck man, come on!!
I can’t wait until Freddy Garcia is off this team.
Joba should not be allowed anywhere near this game.
Get him the fuck out of there before he gives all these runs back. God damn dude
It’s going to take Nova some time to get ready — they need a bridge to get to him.
FUCK FREDDY.
OMFG man.
Pull him now please
0-2 double.
Freddy wouldn’t know a shut down inning if it bit him in the fucking ass.
Unreal.
Fuck Freddy Garcia.
Bullpen immediately.
http://riveraveblues.com/2012/.....nt-4791641
you were saying Eddard?
I’m not in the mood for this right now. Yankees seem to love letting teams catch up, whether it’s on the scoreboard or in the standings.
Please take him out now. Please, please, please.
And bring in Lowe? The bullpen is much worse than Garcia right now.
That’s don’t fucking play around. Take the trash out now.
Betemit swings at everything, especially with two strikes. Might as well groove one.
BEAR THE FUCK DOWN, FREDDY!
Home run right here
may be time to pull Freddy….
Of course John and Suzyn are blaming the long inning for this, and now John is saying it’s the offense’s fault cause they didn’t get the “big hit” Can’t they just admit that Freddy isn’t that good of a pitcher?
So did Michael Kay
In this case, both things are true. The offense should have gotten at least one more run there.
But a pitcher has to be able to hold a 5 run lead.
Baseball is a game of offensive failure though. I mean any time you have a 4 run inning it has to be considered at least a semi-success, and you have to hold that.
Agreed 100%, that’s what I was trying to convey in my comments below.
yep bases loaded with 1 one out and 5-0 and didn’t add any more runs – that will come back to haunt us. the might orioles will put up at least 5 runs today, so we either score more or lose.
The bases were loaded several times, and they got runs in those situations in a few of them. A big hit would have been nice, but they did score 4 runs that inning.
yea but 7 or 8 runs it was you need with freddy/nova pitching and our bullpen. it’s now 5-3 as I write this. the orioles will score at least 2 more runs the rest of the game.
I have to agree with him, they had the opportunity to really blow the game open. 5 runs against this perplexing O’s offense with Garcia on the mound just isn’t enough.
That would be nice, but I have a hard time chastising the offense for NOT scoring 8 runs or something. That does’t happen very often.
It’s been so long since I’ve witnessed Yankee starter hold a lead. Fuck this team.
Hanging everything.
We need another Aceves. Fuck Freddy.
He’s on the Mariners now . . .
I’m nitpicking now, but I want Nix to use two hands to make that catch. Don’t screw around.
I’d hate myself too if I made an out against Freddy Garcia.
Right on cue. Fuck you Freddy. Now the Swish/Arod combo choke looms large.
ARod checked his swing. Not a choke.
Our rotation is full of guys without out pitches.
Everything hanging and down the middle.
Come on Joe.
Is Nova available if needed in the middle innings? Or is that next turn in the rotation?
GET HIM OUT NOW YOU IDIOT. christ.
This guy thought he deserved a starting spot.
Come on a fucking 2 strike fastball!
Come the fuck on!
Get this piece of shit out of the fucking game.
Fuck it, go to Jobber…he can’t be much worse than this.
And ANOTHER two strike hit.
Get him out of there, before Reynolds ties this game up.
Too late Joe – too late
Like always. He always waits like he’s waiting for something good to happen but it always go to shit.
Garcia has to go.
Heywhere are all the andruw jones fans? Why don’t you defend him like you were only a few days ago prediction : swisher will hit under 200 the rest of this season because these are pressure filled playoff like games and you wanna give him 15 million year
You don’t have to seem so happy about it.
Yes he does, he’s not an actual Yankee fan. He roots for players on the team to fail so he can look smart. Even players I dislike (Alex when we first got him, Nix, Andruw) I still root for them to succeed, guys like Mick feel it’s more important for them to be right.
A little late there Joe.
Fucking terrible. Awful!
Two batters two late.
Joba? REALLLY.
I’m going to a bar.
DAMMIT!
Thanks freddy! Way to hold them. And joba comming in to burn it all the way to the ground
I remember the brief revival Freddy has when he returned to the rotation.
Good times.
Now a 5-0 lead is something he can’t even protect beyond one fucking out.
Here we go again…
This team is such a joke.
O’s 8-15 WRISP this series. And a ton of HRs.
Tomorrow they pick up the garbage in my neighborhood.
I wonder if Nick Swisher will fit in my garbage can?
0-2 HBP
0-2 hard double
1-2 pop up
1-2 hard single
For even a league average pitcher that should be 1 for 4, not 2-3 with another hitter reaching.
agreed 100% Even Nova would’ve gotten out of that with less damage.
Other than Kuroda and CC our rotation sucks at finishing batters. No out pitches whatsoever.
How many times am I going to have to watch Matt Wieters tomahawk that same fastball in to right field?
19 times a season for the next 10 years or so.
Stop making me laugh when it’s so hard to breathe.
so, I get it. Freddy dont have it right now.
but at 50ish pitches, yikes…
They have a day off, a ton of guys in the bullpen. They could match up for 4 innings then give it to DRob and Soriano. there’s no excuse for letting Freddy get shelled like that.
All things considered, we’re lucky. Girardi took him out before the real fireworks started.
We’re lucky if our manager uses common sense.
Sundays = good
Sundays when Freddy pitches = bad
Here comes the 2 strike fastball!
Okay Joba, make me not hate this decision.
I love how Mark Reynolds has suddenly developed plate discipline after setting single season strikeout records.
I just saw Andy Pettitte holding a bat.
ZOMG!!!!!! Hes re-sigining with Houston!!! Pettitte/Clemens 2013!
Why can’t this team go a year without starting pitching issues? I mean every team has them but for a team to pour this many resources into them, one year of stability would be nice for once.
they retired Reynolds holy shit
Gift call but ill take it.
Throw Reynolds out please
Wait…we got Reynolds out in a pressure situation?!?!?! Maybe there’s hope?
I know AAA is over – do we have anyone new…and good that came or is coming up?
Joseph, Mesa, Mustelier, and Whitley should be called up but they won’t because Girardi would rather play Jones, Lowe, Eppley, and Ibanez.
Girardi doesn’t decide who gets called up.
He has a say, and it’s very likely they wouldn’t play even if called up.
If Cashman wanted them up, do you think Girardi’s say would actually prevent that? I don’t.
No. I’m saying Girardi could make a case for calling somebody up. Not that he could prevent someone from being called up. Doesn’t matter. They wouldn’t play anyways.
The team was afraid of Montero in September. I don’t think it’s out of loyalty but out of fear for rookies.
So – no one is coming? I thought they worried w/Montero because he was trade-bait but remember when Gohlson (I know he’s gone) came up — anyone like that on the 40-man roster? A pitcher? Reliever?
The only other pitchers on the 40-man roster are either injured or rehabbing from injury.
Fucking eat it reynolds
paint that corner Joba!!!!! fuck your ‘control issues’! Grunt & fart your way back to tha rotation!
JOBA CHAMBAHLAN IS NOT A STAHTING PTICHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gift call for us Yankee fans from Meals behind the plate for yesterday. I’m still mad Jerry.
More of that, Jobber.
Wow Joba?
JOBA!
Not bad, Joba. Offense needs insurance runs.
WOW! Joba was good!
That’s what a pitcher is supposed to do. Take fucking notes Freddy.
Well, yeah. I mean that was good to strike out two in a row, but what sort of “notes” should Freddy be taking? Do you think he doesn’t know that it’s good to strike people out?
Right pitching right down the middle, or plunking a hitter on an 0-2 count are perfectly valid things one should do.
Of course those are bad things to do. Do you think Garcia doesn’t know those are bad things to do, and just needs to take notes that say “don’t pitch right down the middle; don’t hit batters on 0-2 counts; strike people out”, study those notes, and then he’ll be a better pitcher?
Jobber starting to look better. nice.
Is old grunting/farting/snorting/bull-in-a-china-shop Joba back? That would be huge. Hooray for SSS hope!!!
It looks like meals is trying to make up for yesterday. Al close pitches going to Yankees.
I do expect a post tomorrow about Freddy no longer being a usable piece of the staff.
Today just has to be the end of the line for him, all things considered. Especially with Nova (hah!) returning, and Pettitte not being far off either.
Joba in the rotation > Freddy in the rotation
Bull
Fucking
Shit.
Freddy is gone.
79 mph junkballs play better out of the rotation?
-Jamie Moyer
whats up with Russ and the bluff bunt today?
Run slower Martin.
How the fuck did they turn two on that?
By having a real shortstop.
Dude, it’s bad form to troll your own blog.
It’s not trolling to recognize Jeter’s lack of range. It would be trolling to say he must be a good defender because GOLD GLOVES.
Ouch! Intangibles, Mike — remember?
All-time great intangibles and one of the best hitters in history. Terrible defensive player, no way around it.
Terrible is pretty extreme there Mike.
He displays an unacceptable lack of range for a shortstop. His bat makes up for it, but you’d never have him play that position otherwise.
Nunez turns that DP… jus sayin
Turns it into…what? An error?
You mean he’ll bobble it and everyone’s safe.
He’s actually not that terrible at SS. Awful third baseman though.
Cano is a shitty baserunner.
Speed or not with a decent secondary lead he should be on top of the 2nd baseman. He is just a crappy baserunner and doesn’t really get a secondary lead at all.
Sure you have to be careful with Weiters behind the plate (so you don’t get picked off) but Cano is just bad on the bases.
Good sign that Granderson just went with the outside pitch. While his power is mostly pull, when he’s hitting that outside pitch to CF/left center he’s more than just an all or nothing hitetr
It amazes me how many fastballs down the middle and hanging breaking balls the Yankees foul off. Fucking hit it.
How many cookies have our guys missed this series?
Fuck Cano! Asshole used to be my favorite player . . . He might as well have been running through water on his way to second! Does this prick EVER hustle?
Classic case of trying to do to much by Martin.
I would rather him just take pitches with the intention of not swinging the bat at all and see what would’ve happened.
Two run lead in the 5th and they’re into out middle relief. Feels like we’re down by two.
I’m sorry. Russell Martin has to go next year. I love the guy and his intensity but I have a feeling that him hitting .200 isn’t an aberration. I’d rather have Romine starting on the cheap.
I like Martin too, but I agree. I don’t think Romine should be the full time guy, but I’d love to see the Yankees get a platoon partner for him, at least to start the year.
JOSE MOLINA PLEASE
I wish the Cards would trade us Yadier Molina but they love him so they won’t.
After the extension they gave him, I doubt that very much. If the Yanks could get a veteran guy to pair with Romine, I would be perfectly alright with that.
off topic alert… Jake Locker may be out of the game in Tennesee for trying to superman tackle Patrick Chung on a fumble return… all that after Nate Washington got laid out trying to make the catch that was ruled a fumble. wild sequence
Sorry Nashville, turns out Hassleback might have to be the answer…
Who?
Jake should’ve been a baseball player…had all the tools…either outfielder or pitcher…could’ve been a Bryce Harper type player
Sign him. He’ll be better than Freddy.
Angels and Dodgers tried to as an outfielder…but as a pitcher he could go 94 with fastball, 83 with change and a wicked overhand curve at 17…
17 MPH CURVEBALL!?!?
17 years old
I just heard that – sorry, hope he’s okay.
Whew! Isn’t it time to bring in Nova?
As long as he’s dealing, keep him in there.
Joba’s mixing it up pretty good today. Breaking ball actually breaks. I thought for sure he’s have hung one by now.
JOba gettin squeezed
Stay cool, Joba.
Walking Nate Mcclouth again.
I mean a player should be fined for walking his ass.
What? Where is this strikezone?!?!?!?!
This ump is all over the place.
Girardi is anxious now but sleeps when Freddy serves out meatballs.
Would really be nice to get Nate friggen McLouth. out one of these days
Terrible umps are TERRIBLE!
Sit down JJ. Adiosito
I love how Nate Mclouth was obviously begging for a walk and the Yankees gladly gave him one, again.
sidebar…. 97 on the gun for Joba
Velocity hasn’t been his issue as much as command since coming back. What impressed me more was him keeping most of his pitches down.
Looked like that last pitch got away from him, but luckily the batter swung.
Yeah, the last pitch was up, but for the most part, he was down. That’s what I wanted to see moreso than the velocity.
#FISTPUMP!
Jobber to start the 6th?
It is the middle of Baltimore’s lineup coming up.
I completely forgot he did that.
A Joba-pump
Whew!
I miss the Joba fist pumps. He looked sharp today.
Again, not bad. Still want more offense, though.
Good to see Joba over celebrating again.
Joba Chamberlain is back and will finally shore up the 6th and 7th innings for us. He just needed a little time.
Looked more like Joba than I’ve seen in awhile
I don’t think Joba has worked up to throwing more pitches than this in a game, has he? So he can’t come back in the sixth.
Nova warming.
Why did the Rangers start Roy Oswalt?
Nova starts the 6th?
KURTIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MOTHER OF GOD
hahaha
Things I love about joba.
1. He fist pumps
2. He throws at youkillis
Omg Grandy.
Holy shit did Girardi actually make the right call?!
‘Atta boy, Grandy.
What do they say? Feast or famine?
YEAH! Three-run lead feels a *lot* more comfortable than two.
holy shit i thought he caught that. GRANDY
I did too at first. You couldn’t see Jones’ glove for a couple seconds, I had to hold my breath.
Let’s just score a few more runs and let Nova finish this out. He can get stretched out to start for Garcia next time out. Thoughts?
I’m down. But only if we score like three more runs.
He finally benched Jones and played matchup with his hitters like he does his pitchers. We’ll probably end up using 8 pitches to finish this ballgame. Girardi ball.
If Granderson had struck out we’d all be shitting on Girardi.
Welcome to the world of game threads.
No. The process was correct.
Yes people need to defend Girardi for whatever but sitting out Jones who sucks is absolutely the right call every time.
To be clearer if Grandy k’ed no one would care because Jones is that much worse.
Nah, close game, RHP on the mound? you definitely pinch hit your power hitting LHH over your “power hitting” RHH.
It was the right call obviously. Still I bet if Grandy whiffed Joe would have caught shit here.
No way.
He might. Not for lifting Jones, but for going with Granderson instead of somebody else.
Jake Arrieta has pretty good stuff. I feel like he should be better than he actually is.
His FIP/xFIP agree with you.
He’s always been that way…. when he was in the rotation he have some tremendous starts where you’d think: “how is this guy not at least a decent #3 type starter”
I guess it’s just a consistency thing.
he *would* have
Not only do we (Yankee fans) have to deal w/O’s again – looks like Giants fans will have Redskins to deal with again.
The Dome is a house of horrors for G-Men — wish I could see what’s going on or if this is all about NO being a mess w/o Payton.
Prediction:a yank batter is going to get hot to make up for marcocki
What?
Figured I’d chime in here re Sherman and Girardi. Full disclosure, I’m a reporter by trade but I want to be fully objective in stating this.
I don’t like Joel Sherman’s style. I think it’s emblematic of why so many people think we’re distrustful, sensationalist assholes with a slant for the purposes of simply selling papers/ads and inflating egos.
For those saying Sherman is some untalented hack who does nothing but stir the pot, I respectfully disagree. Sherman breaks a lot of news; he’s very plugged in. You don’t hear about that $189M figure without his reporting. Give the man some credit here; he’s skilled at culling sources and breaking stories.
A few other points:
Sherman may have been interviewing other players/coaches, etc. while Girardi answered the question he asked. This happens fairly often.
Going into Girardi’s office and having a screaming match I think shows a lack of composure on both their parts.
Some say they like that Girardi showed some fire. There’s no right or wrong answer there; if the players play well some will attribute it to Joe’s discovery of his balls. If the team continues to sink, Joe will be lambasted for losing his cool. It’s a no-win situation for him.
But Sherman is making himself part of the story here, and that’s out of line. Still, his questions were legitimate and Joe does have a responsibility to address questions posed to him. But for chrissakes, have some tact, Joel. You give us all a bad name.
Mass media sports “reporting” is a fucking joke to begin with. It’s all just a pretend act to maintain excitement, get butts in seats and watching teevee, and has nothing to do with real journalism.
I disagree to an extent. There is still a lot of reporting and findings that are done. The budget, potential trades, potential signings, are all things we talk about to no end here and with out this “fucking joke” as you call it, we’d have absolutely nothing to talk about.
There are institutional problems with all mass media reporting, not just sports. There’s a higher emphasis placed on columns and opinions rather than the gathering of facts or positing of insightful stories, but I think you’re taking this to the extreme.
Where do you get your information from? It doesn’t just appear out of thin air, there are reporters gathering the information for you to digest and discuss.
Again, I don’t like the system as it is, but you can’t have it both ways.
You’re right the system is fundamentally broken, because opinions(especially opinions of those who aren’t writing the article) have gotten in the way of solid reporting.
Did Sherman really make himself part of the story? If so then I view this in a completely different light. I saw the news conference, and I felt like Girardi was in the wrong by taking an attitude with Sherman, and Sherman was wrong for saying it’s part of your job a third time. I then read that Marchand reported the screaming match. Apart from that I haven’t even seen anything on Sherman even commenting on it.
It’s subjective to say, but my sense is by making that terse remark to Girardi about him being paid “the big bucks” and then later engaging in a screaming match (with fellow reporters nearby), Sherman was looking to involve himself in last night’s circus.
You can and should ask questions and you shouldn’t be pushed around by various power brokers, but baiting people and having public confrontations isn’t the way to go about your work.
He absolutely goaded him a little bit, Like I said, both were wrong in their exchange during the conference. As for the argument in the office, I mean Girardi probably asked to speak to him behind closed doors, and their discussion got out of hand. That happens with people that work in the same place, but almost against each other (Girardi’s job is to keep everything in-house, Sherman’s job is to make sure it goes public)
I don’t like Logan facing Wieters.
Better him hitting righty vs Logan than lefty against Eppley.
He’s better from the left side.
Wieters is much better from the right side.
Is he? My mistake. (I must have been thinking Betemit)
Still I’d take Logan against an opposite handed hitter over Eppley though
Not this season. Way better from the left side.
BJ Ups. Holla Holla.
Fuck OOGYs.
Why is Logan in to face Reynolds?
who else?
Curious to who pitches the 7th.
Was that even necessary 3-0? Just put up 4 fingers.
BOO YA
YESSSSSSS!
well done Boone
Bullpen looking sharp today??
Nice job by Boone, but I don’t think he should have faced Jones, Wieters, and Reynolds. That was asking for trouble.
Joba and Logan actually step up. Well done.
WADE! Finally!
IS Swisher 0 for 30 yet?
I’m guessing the 7th will be Eppley to face Machado-Andino and then Rapada to face McLouth?
Scary
Maybe Wade instead of Eppley since Cody threw yesterday. I dunno.
Hopefully. Hopefully Joe doesn’t get cute and try to get a LHH with a ROOGY or vis-versa
So of course he has Wade and Robertson warming…
I want to see the players form a conga line in the bullpen when Joe starts to call in pitchers
I’d also have Robertson getting warm after a couple of batters. 2 out with any sort of trouble I’d look for 7 outs from Robertson/Soriano with tomorrow off.
An A-bomb…nm
lol what was that?
Just a biiiiiiiiiiiiiit high.
LOL Arrieta doing his best Nunez impression
PH for Martin?
Or correctly let him rifle a single to LF.
Wow… regardless of outcome, this is just silly
BLOW IT OPEN!!!!
0 Runs with RISP once again . . .
the 4th inning had like 4 of them… but OK lets go with narrative. thats cool too
Russel has shown some types of life this series…
September is the new “Contract Year”…
Tell that to Swisher and Granderson
Granderson got the memo.
PH for Ibanez please.
I guess I wa right that a yank was going to get hit to make up for hitting Markakis
break.it.open.
yuck. Ibanez has gone limp this month… i mean, completely flacid.
dumb, dumb, dumb
Not like it was a big spot or anything. Wouldn’t want to burn more players with an expanded roster.
Can’t believe he let Ibanez hit there… Just flat out stupidity.
Signs of life!!!!
RISP. HITS.
Is Curtis waking up?
Curtis!
RISP NON FAIL
Oh man huge by Grandy.
Huge, huge hit Curtis.
Fuck Ibanez
Fuck Girardi for not realizing Ibanez can’t hit lefties.
It’s even worse that the pitch was a hanger and he just weakly popped it up.
Wade for the 7th. Let’s hope he was effective as last time.
Why is he letting Nix hit… can’t he bring in a lefty like Chavez or Dickerson? (and then put in Nunez for “defense”)
/Am I doing the platoon thing right?
This is not a game I’d be willing to let Nunez defend, even if we have a 5-run lead.
I guess I should have put the sarcasm tag on.
Nix is a righty and he was facing a lefty.
which game is it OK for Nunez to play defense again?
Spring Training?
http://riveraveblues.com/2012/.....son-75627/
/onlyhalfkidding
Nice..we stretched out a bit
Cory Wade sighting…lets see if he learned how to not hang a curve right over the plate.
Ibanez in LF?
If only there was a defensive OF on the bench….
He’ll probably have Dickerson come in next inning.
Maybe Girardi thinks it would be unfair to use too many players.
another NFL sidebar. This new OT rule is absolutely stupid. If you kick a FG the other team gets a chance, but if you score a TD the game is over?
just kinda dumb.
At least it’s slowly moving towards each team gets at least one offensive series.
It’s a lot effing better than driving 50-60 yards then kicking a FG for an easy win.
It makes sense to me. Getting a TD means the defense really failed. Getting a FG is WAY easier, let’s face it, so it’s REALLY unfair not to give the other team a shot.
That said, each team should get an offensive series, no question.
Would be kind of awesome if Wade has found it again…
Indeed. This is a good spot for him. AL East contender, yet a big enough lead where the pressure isn’t bad Hopefully he finds the 2011/April 2012 version of himself.
Will the Browns be able to hold on???
Vick has 4 INT’s so I hope so
Spoke 2 soon, I think
Sorry
It would be HUGE if we can some how get out of this game w/o using Robertson or Soriano IMO. Especially w/ the off day and how often they’ve been used this season? Giving them two days off would be good.
Agreed.
Beyond the 3 consecutive day or 4 in 5 day stuff (which Girardi does a good job with) is just sheer volume of appearances. Logan is a good example.
Yay good middle relief!!!
Can the bullpen do this everyday??
If Joba is back and Logan can get some regular rest, and Wade has learned not to throw a curve ball for an actual strike, maybe.
Certainly hope so. Seems like Joba just needed a few games to get himself oriented.
You realize you just basically said, “If the bullpen can do this every day, they can do this every day,” right?
Of course. I’m trying to be positive during a blow out dude. Lemme have this!
Works for me.
Nice to see the pen do its job. Joba, Boonie and even Wade were sharp.
That’s why Ichiro should hit 2d until Swisher comes out of his funk.
Good job by the bullpen.
Hell Yeah Jeter!
Insurance runs!!!
The Captain!
AWESOME!!!!!!!! JEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh man, a nice relaxing game is so nice. It’s been too long. Go Jeter!
Right????
CAPTAIN! fuck yes.
Folks, the offense is back and this is without Teixera. Next up is Boston who checked out weeks ago. Tampa and Baltimore will play each other so it’ll be a great time to gain ground.
Oh Yes Derek…where is this old man coming up with this season..
damn Swish.
Need to at least drop him in the lineup.
Drop Swish, Move Martin up in the lineup to number 2. He’s bit hitting the ball hard and will get better pitches to hit with Cano protecting him.
That’s a possibility. More so against LHP. Maybe Ichiro vs. RHP.
Yeah that’s a really good suggestion. Makes the lineup filled with speed at the top since Martin has good speed for a catcher.
And the Jets destroyed the Buffalo Bills. 48-28.
The Toronto Bills are still an NFL team?!
To inject some unfortunate realism: Joba had one good game. More or less every other time, he’s sucked. Let’s not get too crazy-I’d still, at this point, rather him never pitch for this team again.
Really? You’re not willing to let him get more command back from TJS? He’s on the team next year, would you cut him instead?
I forget when exactly, but he had another really sharp appearance a week or two ago, where I wondered in the game thread if he was finding his command again.
He looked really good in his game against Tampa. Even his last outing against Baltimore wasn’t horrible (though he did give up a HR).
Yeah, it was the Tampa game I was thinking of. 1 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 Ks.
He’s got plenty of talent, and he’s coming off two major injuries. I can’t see how someone could say that they never want to see him pitch for the team again, without allowing him to give it a real go in 2013.
Responded below.
To clarify, I meant THIS YEAR.
I want to see him prove himself in mop-up games before we see him in another important game.
Okay, that makes more sense. I think Joba can still push himself into that late inning conversation, and I think it’s wrong to not want him to have that opportunity. He has the talent, and if he can find the command, he can do it. It’s not like the rest of the pen has been that good lately.
I bet the Twins were happy to be rid of Joe Nathan after he sucked after TJS! Oh wait.
Sorry, I was unclear. I meant in this season.
Wade in the 8th, filler in the 9th (if the score holds?)
I didn’t see Wade’s pitch count, but that sounds good to me.
I’d love to see Warren, or Batantces if he’s up.
How is he doing it though?! It can’t be because he’s a talented baseball player who found something wrong with his swing. It has to be something else I’m not saying he’s taking steroids, I’m just vaguely accusing him with out saying it because I’m a gaping vagina. -Skip Bayless
+100000
No Markakis is gonna crush the O’s the rest of the year.
Agreed, he is really their only consistent hitter apart from Jones. Besides that, like the Yankees they have a lot of all or nothing guys, and guys playing way over their heads (JJ Hardy and Mclouth).
It’s been a long time since the Yankees have had a laugher. This is fun.
What the fuck did Kay say?
keep it going folks, keep it going.
I see that I’ve missed a fun game so far.
Massive kudos to Martin so far this series, really done a nice job.
Do you really want Ibanez facing a righty? I thought he was only used for lefties?
/still bitter!
Gameday isn’t used the Yankees doing this well, it’s going all sorts of screwy.
Wow, Arod’s legs are shot.
Granderslam? that would make this day complete.
Best team in MLB.
Damnit Ibanez!!! Why you so slow?!?!?!
This is fucking awesome!
Grandy going for the cycle without even starting.
I hope Grandy gets another AB so he can hit a triple.
Jeez Grandy.
This could be huge folks.
I like this version of Curtis much better than Kurtis.
I just might have to start spelling Curtis with a “C” again. Kudos to Grandy, and don’t forget Martin too. With all the media crap last night and this morning, crushing the Orioles like this feels VERY good.
I think you mean “Cudos to Grandy”!
I really want Nix to knock in Granderson and then no more scoring so we can have the headline be Giants beat Ravens 14-3.
They missed the extra point.
Fucking Tynes.
13 shots for JJ. Good luck dude!
I sacrificed my liver for this team. Don’t ever forget me!!
Welcome back, Grandy man.
Jason Nix.. Jerry Meals doesn’t like working overtime; if he can end the game quickly he will end it.
I expect a no hitter type strike zone from here on out (4-6″ off both sides of the plate is a strike)
I do like that Nix just didn’t give up the AB though and cared about the result even up 10.
finally a Fuck You in Your Face Game…have missed those lately…
Was Nix ejected? They kind of went to commercial with Nix mad.
I know we joke all the time about the MLB hating their fans, but at least you can watch all the team games if you live out of market if you pay, and hear all if you live in market. But for the NFL, you can only watch replays…any Yankee/Giant fans know if I can just listen to Giant games on WFAN’s website on coming sundays?
You spend enough time in that store of yours, you should really invest in a TV. Or convince your boss to do it.
We have a TV, but no cable. Also, I’m incredibly cheap. I’m not paying to get cable in this bitch, or even the HD rabbit ears. Fuck that.
So what plays on the TV?
You should just make up stories to your boss about all the customers that complain about a lack of cable while they peruse the bong collection.
this works. a sport of some kind must be played on the tvs at the bar i work at, and if it’s ever something shitty i just change it to whatever game i want to watch. if the boss says something i just tell them a customer wanted to watch it.
Hey man. Waterpipe. and the security cameras. This place is tiny, probably about 10ft by about 100ft I’d say and there are 8 cameras so the screen is divided showing each camera.
Oh, the TV is just for the camera feeds? Lame.
Yep. One out in the store so customers know they’re on camera, and one in the office so I can watch the cameras and the boss can watch to make sure I’m not stealing money while he’s not around.
best part is they’re both very nice off brand TVs.
“but at least you can watch all the team games if you live out of market”
Exception being the horrible FOX blackouts.
If you certify that DirectTV satellite service is not available where you live, you can purchase full DirectTV NFL game coverage through the Internet:
http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/.....e/overview
The sad thing is I’m STILL really pissed about yesterday’s game. The taste isn’t out of my mouth yet. That’s how much that call disgusted me.
How can it…this would be a different division race if that game came to a fair conclusion…A bad Meal stays with you a long time…
Heh, good line. Might have to steal that one for later.
I know you can’t live in the past, but boy would it be nice if this were wrapping up our third win in a row….
4.2 scoreless innings, 9K’s for the pen so far today.
refreshing change of pace
You mean more like what it was for most of the season.
Any word from YES on what’s wrong with ARod. He’s running much slower than he’s capable of.
I sure they took him out of the game because of the score.
he looks more winded than anything. doesn’t look injury-related, more like he hasn’t run hard in a while.
Yeah. He hasn’t sprinted hard in a while.
Wasn’t Tommy Hunter a decent starter for Texas last year?
4.68 ERA and 4.48 FIP. 4.88 career ERA and 5.12 career FIP.
So not great but not terrible…I remember him being a little better.
He was a bit better in 2010, 3.79 ERA and 4.99 FIP. Ditto 2009, 4.10 ERA/4.40 FIP. Problem is that he doesn’t miss bats at all, career 4.94 K/9. Limits walks pretty well (career 2.14 BB/9), but doesn’t really have the GB% to compensate (career 41.3%).
I hope we destroy Boston this week.
No excuse not to. Their offense and starting pitching is terrible.
Jeter’s put himself in position to win the batting title. That would be cool.
Ironic that they PH for Swisher during Garbage Time.
Now they’re PH for Swisher. hahaha. He’s had his two three week hot streaks this year. He’s useless from now on. Post season: .169/.295 in 147 PA.
Spread across 3 years. That means nothing to me.
I highly doubt you did it because you’re still posting in a coherent fashion but christ, the 4th and 8th innings must have been brutal w/ all the shots.
Haha I decided to spead them out over the course of the night. I would have passed out by now. But you’re welcome for sparking the Yankee offense.
More like 5 years 9 series. Lifetime he’s .254/.358 overhyped, overpaid. Let him walk next year,
And replace him with?
I really dislike when someone takes postseason SSS stats spread over a long period of time, lumps them together, and then proclaims they should walk, all without thinking about viable alternatives. There aren’t many scenarios in which the Yankees can let Swisher walk without making the team worse.
His post season effort has just been so shitty I think it’s a factor. His lifetime stats are not all that great either. He’s a corner outfielder soon to be relegated to DH, and a so-so hitter with some pop. The Yanks should take a pass. I do agree it’s a dilemma who they could replace him with.
I still don’t get what you’re saying about the lifetime stats. They’re above average-pretty good, actually.
In the short term you’re probably right, but a bad contract makes the team worse as well. 3 years? I’m all for it. 4 years? I’m nervous but I’d probably do it. 5 years? Buh-bye and I’ll worry about the alternatives.
It’s also kind of annoying hiding behind SSS for post season performance. Most players only get SSS of post season appearances.
Yes, so we shouldn’t look at them as too definitive either.
Er, that lifetime line is pretty decent. I’d take that pretty much every time.
Not for the multiyear contract at the salary he’s going to want. We’re already saddled with Tex and ARod until like 2050
Well yeah, I don’t really want ANYBODY for a stupidly ridiculous deal and sure, he’s less valuable than, say, Cano. But for a fairly reasonable, or even a SLIGHTLY above reasonable deal, I’d definitely take him back, no doubt.
I still say we should look for someone who hits for avg. even at the expense of power. Swisher strikes out way too much. The team is already heavy with those type of hitters.
I’d take power or average, eleventy billion times a week and twice on Sundays.
OBP and power are MUCH more important than avg.
Cano was also terrible in the playoffs up until 2010.
Not exactly true. In 2007 he was .333/.375.
And after 2010 in the 3 ALDS the Yanks were in, he averaged .340/.370
Swisher has just plain sucked every year in the postseason.
Swisher also hit .333/.385/.750 in the 2010 ALDS (12 ABS, Cano had 15 in 2007). My whole point was that since Swisher has previously been bad in the poseseason (outside of the 2010 ALDS), that doesn’t mean he can’t turn it around and that’s why I brought up Cano, who was a similar case.
True.
Also, Swish has never been a high average guy. So who cares about his BA there? Just a touch below a .360 OBP isn’t bad at all. Swisher is not overhyped, and he’s not overpaid. He might GET over paid in the offseason, but that hasn’t happened yet.
I’m not watching. Read something earlier about Jeter limping. Is he ok?
I’m guessing, cause he homered later, but I’m also listening on the radio so for all I know he hobbled around the bases after.
Lowe?
Can’t give Warren a shot?
I wonder what Typical MIT Nerd thought of the immortal Buck Showalter leaving Britton out there to hand out all those walks when he clearly had absolutely nothing left…and then bringing Arrieta in for his first career relief appearance with the bases loaded against Swisher and ARod (although to be fair that move ended up working out).
He’s probably still cowering in a corner after Pasta Stumbling Sojo debunked his entire argument.
lol. haven’t seen him around here in a while
YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Huge win!!
Nice…we really needed this. I need to know though, did Lowe UNTUCK?
This was really a perfect win in every sense of the word. We were long overdue for one of these.
And, at the conclusion of the Stretch From Hell, the Yankees end up a game in front and never once out of first place.
Not exactly ideal or even good, but things could be worse.
Agreed. Losing that comfy lead sucks, but at the end of the day, they’ve held onto first place the whole time.
+1. If a team is never as good as it looks when they’re hot, and never as bad as it looks when they’re not, and we just experienced the trough, then this is a ~93-94 win AL East Division Champ team. I’ll take it.
Also worth noting that a horrifically bad call last night might have been all that prevented a 3-of-4 from the O’s, at a time when they looked like world-beaters and the Yanks looked like they couldn’t beat anyone.
FUCK, that still stings.
The pen gets it done. Amazing.
Also: Hurry back, Andy.
Needed this win and they got it. Wait until this team hits the playoffs. Centaur will make his 2009 postseason #s look like a slump.
Man we might have been one blown call away from a 3 game lead. Fuck Jerry Meals
I think the umpires in today’s game in order to make up for giving the game to the o’s last nite did something shocking they called balls and strikes fairly which they hardly ever do for the yanks. If the games strike zone wa s fairly called the yanks might never lose.
I have to give it up for Joba. He did a good job. I really expected him to come in and blow it up, but he got it done. Yes, a very generous strike 3 call to Reynolds factored in there, but whatever.
