Game 142: Just Win

Nova will start on Saturday
Zoilo & Austin homer as Trenton drops Game 2
(Jared Wickerham/Getty)

The Yankees have been atop the AL East — either tied or sole possession — since June 11th, exactly half-a-season ago (81 games). For the fourth time in a week, a loss tonight coupled with an Orioles win would put them into second place for the first time since the finale of the Subway Series in CitiField. Yeah, it’s been a while. At the same time, a win tonight and an Orioles loss will continue to keep New York in first place for at least another day. I much prefer that. Here’s the lineup…

SS Derek Jeter
CF Curtis Granderson
DH Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
1B Nick Swisher
LF Raul Ibanez
3B Eric Chavez
RF Ichiro Suzuki
Chris Stewart

RHP David Phelps

Tonight’s game is scheduled to start at 7:10pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and ESPN nationally. Try to enjoy.

    Just Win?

Hmmm, I think I’ve seen this before!

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

No less than 15 times. Ugh.

  • Kramerica Industries

Would really be nice if this team could catch fire the way the Phillies and Brewers have in recent weeks.

At least now the NL playoff picture is as mind-blowing as the AL one.

  • Andy Pettitte’s Fibula (formerly Manny’s BanWagon)

Let’s hope the Yankees win and some runs into the Red Sox dugout to catch a pop up and crushes Bobby Valentine in the process.

    • Dale Mohorcic

I like Bobby V. just where he is. Incompetent, arrogant and making sure the Red Sux underachieve.

  • Charles

Anyone else wondering why Girardi insists on having Ichiro bat 8th instead of 9th? Look at today’s lineup, you have Raul Ibanez, Eric Chavez, and Ichiro Suzuki back to back to back so late in games you’re just asking for a lefty to face them. Why not simply switch Stewart and Ichiro so you at least break up 1 of the lefties as well as having the fairly hot Ichiro hitting in front of Jeter and give us some vintage Brett Gardener production.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

I agree with batting Ichiro 9th, but having Chris Stewart break up the lefties isn’t going to influence bullpen decisions.

      • IWannaBeAHirokstar

You can always pinch hit Martin for Stewart late in a game to break up the lefties though. They would actually have to respect that the way Martin has hit of late.

    • Chilango

Look who you’re breaking the lefties up with: Stewart. So what. Too bad there’s no one else.

  • EDDARD

They’ve been alternating wins and losses so tonight will be a win. We finally get to play against a righty so we can sit Pearce, Jones and Nix in favor of Chavez, Ibanez and Ichiro. If this lineup can’t destroy Aaron Cook then they need to blow this whole thing up.

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Blow the whole thing up how? You have a bunch of old guys on 1-year deals anyways.

“Blow the whole thing up” is the wrong characterization. There’s nothing to blow up except for the gin-ormous contracts that noone else will take since the Dodgers aren’t buying any more.

  • CS Yankee

Almost any picture with Bobby V looks comical. I hope they extend him in the off-season.

  • RetroRob

What is this nonsense delaying the game? Just tuned in.

  • Tom

“They’ve never been recently just in the role of spoiler” (ESPN on the Red Sox)

Apparently 2010 is not very recent? (8 games out in early Sept and pretty much the entire month) Must they just continue to make shit up to create a storyline?

    • RetroRob

The 2010 Red Sox are still in the race.

  • Kramerica Industries

B.J. Upton is sure having a helluva of contract year month.

  • Cy Pettitte

can’t wait to watch them beat the ball into the ground repeatedly for 3 hours.

    • WhittakerWalt

He could strike out in batting practice.

  • Cy Pettitte

wow Granderson even managed to strike out against Cook. impressive.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Just had to get K’d by Cook, didn’t you Kurtis.

  • Ron

    Haha

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

Granderson strikes out even against Aaron Cook.

  • jon

would have never guessed gandy would strike out vs cook

  • C

O/U 2.5 GIDPs today for the yanks vs cook

  • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

    Cy Cook

    • http://www.g6tec.com Jedile

He probably ends up with a double digit k game. predicting 0-4 from granderson with 3K’s. :(

      • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

lol sadly, with the way things have been going, you could be right.

      • Widget

Just another reason why they need to trade him in the offseason.

        • http://www.g6tec.com Jedile

I mean I like Granderson but man just lately he has been K-ing so much. I really do think we should trade him for something. What about after Josh leaves Texas? Maybe they become suitors?

  • JobaWockeeZ

    #tradeGrandy #keepSwish

    • jjyank

I am definitely in the let Grandy walk camp, but I’m not sure what he’d be worth in a trade. Also in the keep Swish camp, with two caveats. One, he doesn’t stick to his guns about Werth money. Two, the Yankees don’t get Justin Upton.

      • JobaWockeeZ

I’m sure some team will overpay in prospects for a “good” defensive CF with great power and some speed.

Meanwhile I also agree Swish is a goner if he asks for Werth money but sicne the rest of the league doens’t think of him that highly I doubt he’ll get it.

I would love Justin Upton but Cashman keeps the prospects unless it’s for a guy who can throw 95.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

          Granderson can throw 95?

          • jjyank

To be fair, Nick Swisher does have a career ERA of 0.

          • TheLastClown

He’s saying Cash will only trade the blue chip prospects for a front end SP.

            • jjyank

Austin Jackson and Ian Kennedy weren’t quite as highly rated as Montero, but they were still top prospects.

            • Need Pitching & Hitting

He traded front line prospects for Granderson.

              • JobaWockeeZ

The first time he actually traded top prospects for a hitter.

                • JobaWockeeZ

Since the dynasty years I should say.

                  • Need Pitching & Hitting

I think that has more to do with what the team needs were and availability of players to fill those needs in free agency.

                • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

                  A-Rod, David Justice.

                  • JobaWockeeZ

Justice yes. I don’t think Soriano qualifies has a prospect though.

                    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Joaquin Arias was their #3 prospect at the time of the trade (according to BA).

          • JobaWockeeZ

The lone exception since Abreu and they didn’t even have prospects then. It was crap.

        • jjyank

You’re probably right about Granderson. But the Yankees need to make the team better in that trade for me to be okay with it. Moving Gardner to center and making a second trade for a left fielder satisfies that requirement as well.

Regarding Upton, I think it’s unlikely, but I wouldn’t rule it out because Cashman doesn’t like trading for position players. If anything, Towers will ask for too much. He is a great buy low candidate though (relatively speaking).

      • Ron

Sure let’s keep swisher who likes hitting in playoff games certainly not me and you.

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

      #getridofboth #getupton #getchoo #comebackgardner #winworldseries

      • jjyank

I’d be cool with Choo as well (prefer Upton though), but I don’t really want both. I want to keep at least part of the farm.

        • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan

In my fantasy, Ramiro Pena and Cody Eppley are suffice for this trade.

          • jjyank

            Well, a man can dream.

          • Kramerica Industries

George: I think I got it. How ’bout this? How ’bout this? We trade Jim Leyritz and Bernie Williams, for Barry Bonds, huh? Whadda ya think? That way you have Griffey and Bonds, in the same outfield! Now you got a team! Ha ha ha.

            ——

George: Anyway, as I was lying in the puddle, I think I may have found a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey, and we wouldn’t have to give up that much.

      • JobaWockeeZ

        #ilikethisplan #Cahsmansaysfuckyou

    • Cy Pettitte

sign Upton, make a 3 team trade with Grandy+ to get Upton, let Swish walk. All your Uptons are belong to us.

      • http://www.g6tec.com Jedile

        I approve of this Trade.

  • jon

legit #3 guy? wow ill take that

  • Hummingbird S.

let’s just hope Phelps can last 5 innings while keeping us in the game.

  • Widget

How quick of a hook will Girardi have tonight when Phelps gets in trouble?

    • jjyank

Very quick, I hope. I like Phelps, but now is not the time to let a young starter take his lumps.

  • McLovin

Just watch Aaron Cook throw a shutout.

    • Red Mist

No way that Mother F’r throws a shutout.

  • Widget

Nothing is stopping the Orioles. My God can someone please slow them down. Tampa is no match.

    • Cy Pettitte

they should sign Clemens, he’d probably be the WS MVP.

    • RetroRob

They’re not for real. We’ve been told so.

They’ll come back to earth…in November.

      • RkyMtnYank

Hehe, right, they’re not built for the post season.

    • jjyank

Seriously, what the hell is going on down there? Or really, “over” there, since I live in DC. But for real. I’ve been very dismissive all year about the O’s, but they just won’t go away, run differential be damned. I know that luck and statistical corrections don’t have to happen in a 6 month span, things don’t always even out in a certain time frame. But still, damn annoying.

      • RetroRob

This will only inflate the legend of Showalter, which is nonsense. That said, I remain a huge Showalter fan. He’s the best manager the Yankees had in the past twenty years. Sorry, Joe. (T)

        • jjyank

I was a bit young for that time (my baseball consciousness began around 1995, lucky me) so I can’t really comment on him much. I’m just glad TMITN stopped posting.

          • Kramerica Industries

I’ve read this blog and the comments sections on an assorted basis for nearly four years now.

            Umm, who is TMITN?

            • jjyank
              • RetroRob

Ha. I was wondering who that was too. I’m disturbed this might be an area where TMITN and I agree. Are we sure he’s gone? Usually when a regular poster disappears I assume he’s taken on a new identity.

                • jjyank

He apparently came back the other day under a new handle, linked to a thread of his rantings, and Mike replied do it strongly insinuating that it was the same IP address as TMITN. Sorry, I like short hand.

Anyway, I’m sure Buck is a good manager. That he wasn’t was never the argument against him. But read through that link and tell me that he is at all rational, intelligent, or comprehensible.

                  • Kramerica Industries

That just threw me because his name already contained an acronym.

                  • RetroRob

Oh, I agree. That’s why I said this season will only add to the legend (which I mean sarcastically). Yet I’m not going to knock, Buck. I believe he’s one of the better managers in the game. I think most managers who are hired already have a level of skill that teams have determined make them MLB managers, and thus by the time it’s all said and done don’t have a major impact on a team’s win total. They win some, they lose some. Yet there are some managers who I believe are net positive in the win column, and there are some who will be a net negative. The difference between hiring the bad manager and the good manager can add up to a number of wins. Showalter to me is in that camp who will add wins. Girardi to me is in the neutral camp. I’d rather have Showalter managing the Yankees, but at least Joe is not costing the Yankees wins (I think!)

  • Hummingbird S.

    hack-at-everything Robbie

  • Tom

Cano needs to not try to pull the ball against a sinkerballer. He’s going to ground out 4 times with that approach.

He should be driving popups off the wall.

  • Dale Mohorcic

Soooo, I’m rooting for the Rays tonight, right?

  • JobaWockeeZ

It’s AARON COOK. Emphasis because he’s supposed to suck more than the Yankees.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Ciriaco makes the play?

    Of course!

  • jon

    only the fucking yankees

  • Hummingbird S.

they are terrible and unlucky.. great combination

    • Matt

One play does not mean a team is unlucky. They are creating their own bad luck by repeatedly letting opposing pitchers getting away with mistakes right down the middle in hitters’ counts.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Stop embarrassing me Yankees.

  • Dale Mohorcic

Raul is going to faint during this at bat.

  • Matt

2-1 flat sinker right down the middle, and Ibanez fouls it off.

This swing is the epitome of this Yankees offense lately. Opposing pitchers are feeding them mistake after mistake and they don’t hit them. Other teams are not missing the mistakes of Yankees pitchers.

  • Widget

Cook sucks, lucky for him though the Yankees lineup sucks even worse.

  • Hummingbird S.

I wonder what’s the mystery with Cook. I haven’t seem a hard hit ball against him and he throws one motherfucking pitch, a sinker that’s not even that fast. Pathetic job as usual by these chokers.

  • Dale Mohorcic

Bad night to be a worm.

  • Tom

At what point do they stop rolling out Jones/Ibanez?

At this point Dickerson’s defense alone is probably worth it (and certainly against righty starters who he can hit)

    • JobaWockeeZ

Well they love throwing Ibanez out there so as long as hes a Yankee he’ll play.

      • Hummingbird S.

Joe G. is a hell of a manager

  • Chilango

Phelps throws a 3-2 curve for the K. nice.

  • Marcy

Phelps looks too good for them to not support him.

  • Matt

In the first 117 games this year, the Yankees hit 180 HR in 3982 AB (22.1 AB/HR).

In the last 24 games, the Yankees have hit 30 HR in 800 AB (26.7 AB/HR).

They are substituting HR for 2B to some extent, except with a .235 BA over the same stretch it’s hard to drive those guys in.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Ball four my ass.

    • Hummingbird S.

borderline pitch… he had other 3 opportunities at least to put the hitter away.

  • Hummingbird S.

    from 0-2 to a walk. That’s a Yankee special!

  • RkyMtnYank

Saw the Ump come talk to Phelps after the inning, hopefully they worked things out.

    • Mike N

Just got home. What was going on?

      • Hummingbird S.

Getting squeezed low and on the inside corner.

        • Mike N

          Tx.

  • Cy Pettitte

good to see Chavez make some solid contact

  • Hummingbird S.

    look at that, a hit!

  • Tom

Hey look a lefty that doesn’t try to pull the ball hammers Cook and doesn’t ground out to 2nd or 1st.

  • Cy Pettitte

bunt Ichiro so Stewart can hit…..

  • WhittakerWalt

    Fundamentals.

  • Tom

This would be a good time for a Stewart BABIP special

    • Tom

Stewart hit the ball way too hard… think softer Chris! Bloop that thing in at 120 feet or so.

  • Cy Pettitte

    so.much.RISP.fail.

  • Hummingbird S.

what a surprise, they will strand a runner at second with zero outs.

  • Marcy

This is depressing – please, Derek

  • Hummingbird S.

Derek has to hit that pitch… high FB

  • WhittakerWalt

John and Suzyn should really stop comparing Jeter to Willie Mays.

    • WhittakerWalt

Especially since he then proceeded to strike out against Aaron Cook.

      • RetroRob

That’s not fair. I’m pretty sure Aaron Cook could strike out Willie Mays. He is in his 80s.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    shocking

  • Hummingbird S.

fuck this team.. they are all chokers

  • Kramerica Industries

Chavez never even left 2nd base.

0-3, so far, with RISP. Yankees are on top of their game.

  • Ron

    Wow crazy movement

  • JobaWockeeZ

    It’s Aaron Cook.

  • oldmanalex

man, im tired of an offence that is headlined by a 38yr old shortstop. no knocks against jeter, but fuck…. can any of these young people with big paychecks step the fuck up.

  • The Angry Troll

Yankees are the worst team in baseball. At least the Red Sox have the excuse of waving the white flag on the season.

  • Effthisnoise

The latest chapter in the nightmare: Aaron Cook has game of his life against Yanks.

  • Hall and Nokes

Lemme guess, we’ve squandered opportunities and Baltimore just got a 2-run homer from Wieters.

  • Dale Mohorcic

Is there some new way to root for the Yankees that allows me to celebrate their futility? Some sabermetric paradox that will allow me to enjoy watching baseball again through making me a fan of failure? Something? Anything?

    • Effthisnoise

Shots every RISP fail. Oh wait ive been doing that already

    • TheLastClown

You could watch non-Yankees games with high Fangraphs NERD scores.

This was you can enjoy baseball without all of the emotional baggage.

(Un?)Fortunately, as Yankees fans we have to slog through stressful times like these, think of it as earning the joy you feel when they crush.

  • RetroRob

Phelps looks good, hasn’t tripped on the mound. The offense, however…

  • Kramerica Industries

This team is 36 of their last 169 with RISP.

So glad RISPFAIL has come back, with a vengeance.

  • RetroRob

Cone talking about Phelps; Kay sleeping talks about Cook.

  • Hummingbird S.

nice game by Phelps.. great effort that will be wasted by the offense.

  • Dale Mohorcic

Does Phelps’ glove seem unusually small to anyone else?

  • JobaWockeeZ

    Andruw Jones is my guess.

  • Effthisnoise

This is what they should be doing to Aaron cook

  • Tom

    Too many HRs.

The Yankees having a lead means it will only be more painful when they lose.

Thought I’d momentarily join in the general gestalt of the last few weeks.

Now back to our reguarly scheduled programming.

    • JobaWockeeZ

You may be joking or not but again the argument wasn’t too many home runs. It’s stop living or dying by the home run. It could be totally wrong but no one has ever said too many HRs.

Seriously it kinda needs to die.

      • RetroRob

The whole post, all few lines, was a joke.

As for memes dying, not on the Internet!

    • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Nah. They win this one. If they only went up 1-0 and left the bases loaded they’d lose. Bombs away leaving bases clear – they win.

  • JobaWockeeZ

Cano when he gets a 100 million dollar contract might be the only hitter who only hit 30 HRs in a season once.

  • Hummingbird S.

    swisher, still sucks

      What a fucking mental fail.

      • Jack

        Jeter’s last contract was 10/189.

at this point i am praying for ibanez to pull a hamstring. the fact that he is playing, the outfield no less, is horrible

    • VCR1111

A love affair like Girardi & Sergio Mitre?

    • BENICIO DEL TORO

I think that Lord Voldemort casted the imperius curse on Girardi and commanded to give him unnecessary amounts of playing time

  • Kramerica Industries

    Shut down inning?? I’m scared!

  • Bartolo’s Colon

3 runs is not enough. phelps has been pitching way to well. sad that we can’t feel comfortable without a lead over 6 runs…

  • EDDARD

Phelpsy needs to give us 6-7. If Joe doesn’t bring in Robertson we’ll have a chance to hold the lead. I hope he uses Joba in that set up role tonight to see if he can take over that job going forward.

Phelpsy? Is that you, Joe G.?

Shouldn’t you be in the dugout?

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

        Whatthe?

        Ok FAIL

  • Bartolo’s Colon

ciriaco can go 0 for his next 19 and still be hitting 300 against the yanks

  • VT Yankee Fan

Has Ciriaco ever been put out twice in a row by the Yanks?

    • Chilango

      tonight.

    • RetroRob

I think Kuroda gave him an oh’fer in NY.

  • Hall and Nokes

Ciriaco’s BABIP against the Yankees down to .820.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Can’t stop Pedroia.

  • Hummingbird S.

here it go.. time to give it back.

  • Effthisnoise

    Of course. This fucking guy

  • Tom

Damn – had him struck out on that 1-2 pitch.

Even Nomar led out an audible “oh” after that pitch was called a ball.

  • Chilango

Here we go shut down inning. Fuck

  • Cy Pettitte

wow this sis just fucking hilarious. can anyone give us a fucking shut down inning?

  • Kramerica Industries

    Yep, no shutdown inning.

It’s fricken’ impossible for this team.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

this team sucks in every way imaginable. not one pitcher can give us a shutdown inning. can’t wait for andy

  • The Angry Troll

So does the lack of a shutdown inning trend continue or not?

    • The Angry Troll

Damn, just as I hit enter . . . Thank you, Mr. Loney.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Nice shut down inning

  • Hummingbird S.

    Fucking Phelps…

  • VCR1111

    Add ShutdownInningFail to RISPFail. :(

  • Effthisnoise

Let’s start worrying about the tree on first base so Ross can groove a ball over the monster

  • Mike N

    Huge DP!

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    more runs please

  • Hummingbird S.

at least he only gave one back. Gotta save some misery for the later innings.

  • jjyank

I had horrible images of Ross tying the game there. Thanks, Phelps.

  • Tom

    Eh, I’ll take it.

He had ratboy struckout, the ump just squeezed him on that 1-2 pitch before the double. The Loney single was just a groundball; if it’s at some one there’s a decent chance that’s a scoreless inning.

  • The Angry Troll

I think this is a common pattern for Yankee-born pitchers, right? Of all the hot-to-trot prospects that’ve climbed through the pinstriped farm it seems that all of them are clearly capable of going once through the order, but once that ONE becomes crooked and the pitchers starts seeing guys for the 2nd or 3rd time . . . It’s a whole other story. I’m sure this phenomenon could be said of many pitchers but I feel as though it plagues the Yankee blood particularly much.

    • jjyank

Maybe, but how many “hot to trot” prospects are we talking about here? There’s Hughes, okay. Phelps was never a top prospect, ditto Nova. They were projected as back end guys. Joba is in the bullpen, but was actually fairly successful as a starter.

  • Hummingbird S.

we will need at least 5 more runs to win this game

  • Cy Pettitte

do we really want to get into the bullpen instead of having Cook in?

    • Defensive Indifference

      That’s a clown question. Bro.

  • Hummingbird S.

    unfortunate… just missed it

  • Chilango

Heads up baserunning by the Capt

  • Tom

2-0 curve…. just take it Robbie.

  • Mike N

    Fuck. What a goddamn play!

  • Hummingbird S.

so thats how you play D up the middle.

  • FIPster Doofus

Nice D by Rey Ordonez Jr.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Keep on joggin’ Cano.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Holy shit.

  • Hummingbird S.

Just in case you are not keeping score, that’s 0-7 with RISP in this game. Chokers all the way.

    • FIPster Doofus

That last one wasn’t a choke. It was great defense.

  • Cy Pettitte

wow, I really thought 3 runs would win this. not.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    wtf…

  • Kramerica Industries

Gonna need a lot more runs in this game.

  • Hummingbird S.

please get Phelps out of there immediately. He fucking blows.

  • Karl Krawfid

    lol @ this team.

  • Karl Krawfid

Keep throwing fastballs down and in to lefties.

  • BENICIO DEL TORO

If the starter coughs up the lead again I swear to god I will choke a bitch

  • Mike N

    K!

  • Kramerica Industries

    Nice strike out.

    Still need another non-run-scoring out.

  • Kramerica Industries

One more of those, Mr. Phelps.

  • The Angry Troll

Haven’t the opposing teams been traditionally scoring with 2 outs?

  • Chilango

Phelps is fucking around with a AAA guy.

  • Mike N

    Hellz, YEHA!!!!

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    Nice job Phelps!!

  • Defensive Indifference

    YES!

  • Hummingbird S.

    fuck yeah! nice escape!

  • Kramerica Industries

Brilliant job by Phelps to get out of that unscathed.

Hopefully he has another inning in him.

    • Chilango

He set down three AAA guys. Good, but brilliant?

      • Need Pitching & Hitting

        Good getting them out.
Somewhat brilliant getting them out without allowing a run.

      • jjyank

Semantics. Runner on third with no outs, even many AAA hitters could manage a sac fly, RBI groundout, etc. It’s impressive.

        • Chilango

          impressive. OK that works.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Got to give em credit

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Good shit David.

  • EDDARD

That was the turning point right there. Dave Phelps is a big game pitcher, indeed.

    • Anthony

Easy there. His last few starts were nothing to brag about.

  • The Angry Troll

    Bravisimo.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

ugh another wasted leadoff triple, wait that was the red sox? what is going on here?

  • Anthony

Great job getting out of that jam! Phelps has really regained his composure. BoSox looking very Yankee-likee that inning.

  • Kramerica Industries

OT: Cardinals swept in San Diego.

The Phillies, incredibly, are now only three games out of the 2nd NL Wild Card. Brewers can also move within three with a win tonight.

Seriously, both teams were sellers at the deadline, and have come from absolutely nowhere to be right in the middle of the NL race. Wow.

    • Hall and Nokes

Honestly, it would be a shock now if the Phillies miss the playoffs.

    • FIPster Doofus

No Victorino or Greinke? No problem. Amazing stuff.

    • Anthony

This September is going to be intense. It would be even more so if Yankees could stay in first.

  • WhittakerWalt

    Way to go, Phelpsie!

  • jjyank

Love the Phelps fist pump. He earned that. Let’s get him some breathing room, boys!

  • RkyMtnYank

Amazing how fair weather you people are. Nice job David, keep mowing em down!! It’s like a pitcher can never give up a single hit, walk or anything. The expectations are completely unrealistic.

    • DC

      ietc

    • jjyank

      Welcome to the internet.

    • Mike N

This is par for the RAB course. As soon as the starting pitcher gives up a single run and allows another man on base, many people are calling for him to be pulled immediately. This is, of course, delusional. You can’t just pull your starter at the first hint of trouble every game, or within a week, your bullpen will be toast.

      • RkyMtnYank

Exactly, the team starts playing not to lose after scoring only a few runs early. Playing not to lose will not help you win games.

    • Anthony

This is true especially with our the pen has been playing lately. I think people react that way because of the troubles the starting pitching has had lately. I love Phelps, but he hasn’t lasted very long in his previous few starts. To be honest, no one will ever be 100% sure on when to take a pitcher out. That inning with the lead-off triple could have easily gotten worse.

  • Mike N

    Bring home this fucking RISP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Kramerica Industries

Yankees are 1-19 with RISP in this series.

Hopefully they can actually plate a run or two here.

  • Cy Pettitte

    please PH for Ibanez.

    • Corban Joseph

Hi I had a .980 OPS against RHP and am on the 40 man but keep playing Ibanez.

      • Need Pitching & Hitting

        You also don’t play OF.

        Chris Dickerson says hi.

  • MannyGeee

So the love feast on ESPN from (of all people) Nomah and Schillling….. Fucking disgusting.

    • Cy Pettitte

surprised Schilling has time to do ESPN broadcasts, thought he was too busy burning tax payer money.

      • Mike N

        But he’s a job creator!

        • MannyGeee

          #trueredsoxtrueAmerican

  • Karl Krawfid

    Bunt really?

  • MannyGeee

Shit… We have to be the worst bunting team in the league…

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Professional Baseball Player not bunting very professionally.

  • Tom

Ready to applaud Girardi for pinch hitting…

And then he calls for the bunt.

    • Brian S.

The way this team hits with RISP I have no problem with bunting over a guy from second. One run is better than 0.

      • Brian S.

But you kind of need to execute…

      • MannyGeee

Ok but why bring in a pinch hitter to fucking bunt? Makes zero sense

        • Brian S.

Are you really complaining about Ibanez getting taken out of the game? That is never a bad thing.

          • MannyGeee

            No, well… Kinda?

I just never understood the PH sac bunt…

            • Brian S.

Maybe Nix is a better bunter. He failed miserably but maybe that is the thought process. How hard is it to lay down a bunt anyways?

            • Tom

The beauty is that if it works they probably walk Jones and then you have the lefty Ichiro against a lefty followed by Chris Stewart.

Just another example of Girardi not having a clue of context as oppose to the caveman logic of bunt guy to 3rd with no out, grunt.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Way to go Joe G.

Playing for 1 run and you might get nothing.

    • Chilango

Right. No outs and you bunt the guy to third? WTF.

  • MannyGeee

Uh oh… Andruw Jones’ music is playing

Looks like MacGehee might get seem playing time tonight after all…

  • Brian S.

    Intentionally walking Andruw Jones? LOLOLOLOL

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

good evening all…thought I’d stop in for a bit before I left work for the night. I tried to avoid the game tonight, just to give myself a break, and was watching Game of Thrones. Epic show, but eventually I longed for the docile tones of John and Suzyn. I could easily look up a game review, but how’d the runs score?

    • Brian S.

      John Snow FTW

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Him and Stark’s youngest daughter are my two favorite characters so far. As well as the blonde chick married to the Horse king. I just finished the episode where she lets him pour molten gold over her brothers head. Fucking brutal.

    • Tom

Granderson HR (bomb over the bullpen). Cano 3 runblast over the monster in a 3 hitter stretch. ARod singled in between

      • Tom

        oops 2 run blast obviously

    • FIPster Doofus

Solo HR by Grandy and two-run dinger by Cano.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

But, from following the Yankees on here, Kurtis does nothing but strike out and Cano is a talented hotdog, who shouldn’t be resigned because he doesn’t run out pop ups…I’m confused?!

        • MannyGeee

Yeah, those two guys that the Yankees shouldn’t resign…. That’s our offense tonight..

        • Tom

          Nice job by Phelps!

Now if the ump can call a legit strikezone to ratboy this could be a quick inning.

        • Tom

This is where the offense failure is huge.

If it’s 4-1, 5-1 Phelps is not pulled and the Yankees aren’t patching together 1-2 innings. This is what happens when you completely botch pretty much EVERY decision over a 4 batter stretch after a leadoff double (Jones was the only reasonable move)

    • jjyank

Welcome back, Plouffy. We missed ya. Or at least I did.

  • Tom

    This is ridiculous.

  • Brian S.

    PH Melky Mesa for Ichiro?

    • MannyGeee

      Where’s my damn burrito

      • jjyank

        +1

  • Kramerica Industries

    0-9 now.

This team is really pissing itself badly right now.

    • Brian S.

1-9. Ichiro got a single with Chavez on 2nd but we were too slow to score.

      • Need Pitching & Hitting

Ichiro reached on an error, not a single.

      • Kramerica Industries

Well, I guess it couldn’t be an error.

But we all know that wasn’t really any kind of a “hit”.

  • Karl Krawfid

Joe G needs to take this NL style baseball back to the NL.

  • EDDARD

Why did Joe PH for Chavy who has two doubles tonight but let Ichiro hit for himself? Girardi ball.

  • Karl Krawfid

    LOL

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    The incompetence is astounding.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Unbelievable.

1-22 now in this series, and they’ve only batted for 15 innings.

  • MannyGeee

Chris Stewart is a waste of laundry… Seriously, he is the worst

    • Brian S.

No joke. They must realllllly hate Cervelli’s defense if they can’t PH for him in a close game.

  • WhittakerWalt

Make sure you waste that leadoff double!

  • Hummingbird S.

How do you PH for Chavez and Ibanez but let Ichiro and Stewart hit? FUCK YOU GIRARDI!

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

I think Girardi is just making sure he doesn’t need to use Cervelli under any circumstance.

  • WhittakerWalt

Are any of the YES guys still talking about what a diamond in the rough Chris Stewart is?

  • Tom

How the hell does he let Stewart hit? He has 2 catchers on the bench.

so after a lead off double he had:

    – PH bunting
    – PH walking (who would have been pitched around had the bunt worked)
    – Ichiro against a lefty
    – Chris Stewart being Chris Stewart

He wasn’t managing for 1 run, he was managing for zero runs there.

    • Bartolo’s Colon

maybe joe is pulling a pete rose, needs to help throw the game somehow.

  • MannyGeee

So Phelpsie? Big time stone face…. Love how cool as a cucumber he is

  • Chilango

kind of feels like we’re down by two, not up by two

  • EDDARD

And it’s not like Joe doesn’t have ballplayers to use. He could PH Martin, PH Nunez, leave Chavy in because he has 2 doubles. PH for Ichiro, PH for Ibanez, and PH for Stewart. That’s why you have the call ups, Joe!

  • Hall and Nokes

What kind of ball will Andruw misplay for 2 runs?

    • Bartolo’s Colon

at least raul would have misplayed it as well. too bad an actual outfielder wasn’t out there

  • YanksFanInBeantown

Respect for Pedroia? Fuck that noise. The textbook definition of a product of his park.

    • MannyGeee

Ha, I was just thinking that. Of all the players to respect in the league, Pedroia is not that dude. Ortiz all day long, but not Brett’s brother.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

    time to steal

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Trouble brewing

  • Mike N

    Another huge DP!

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

At least Phelps can handle Pedro.

    • MannyGeee

true Yankee… Taking down the resurrection of Ted fucking Williams

  • Kramerica Industries

    Holy shit.

Not only one, but two outs off Ciriaco. Miracles do happen, I guess.

  • EDDARD

They finally got Cyrano. Phelps truly is a big game pitcher and he’s showing it tonight. None of the other Yankee starters has given us a start this good.

  • Chilango

    YUUGE DP

  • Hall and Nokes

This is making up for all the outs Ciriaco should have made all summer.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

what is going on here, ciriaco will make up with it with 5 triples tomorrow. seriously, does anyonme know if anyone ever has had a better avg against the yanks through 40 ab’s? he’s got to be up there

    • MannyGeee

For real, he’s been damn near Ortiz-ian…

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Now THAT was sweet.

    Huge DP

  • brian

ichiro’s defense has been non-impactful for the yankees… kinda important since he is .290/.310/.400

    • brian

and the rate stats are going down, not up

    • MannyGeee

He is what he is… We traded an extra AAA arm so that we don’t need to see Ibanez and Andruw in the same OF nightly…worth every penny

      • Brian S.

        Dewayne Wise is way better.

  • RkyMtnYank

    Fuck Girardi!!!!!!!

  • Mike N

    C’mon, LOOGY!

  • FIPster Doofus

    Swishxeira.

  • Cy Pettitte

    holy shit Swish thank you.

  • Chilango

    Rapada catches a break.

    • RkyMtnYank

      Girardi catches a break.

  • Anthony

Great outing from Phelps. Feels like forever since a starter went that long. Nice play by Swish!

  • Mike N

    NICE!

  • MannyGeee

I woulda let Phelpsie finish the inning, but Swish makes Girardi look like a genius there

    • RkyMtnYank

Yep, will all look good in the box score tomorrow.

  • Leg-End

    Swisher with the Tex play.

  • bring buck back

Top of 6th was such an amazing fail. RISP fail, bunt fail, Ichiro fail, and most of all, Girardi fail. Seriously…why is Andruw Jones in the game, ever? Especially to PH for Chavez, who was the ONLY hitter who realized the FIRST time through the order not to pull against Cook, and who is actually good at baseball so can hit pitchers from both sides. And I saw Ichiro’s double-play ball from a mile away. But of course Girardi won’t PH for Ichiro because Girardi has no idea what he is doing and should have been fired before he was even hired.

oh and way to go swish bailing out girardi for his awful confused pitching change

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

Chavez hasn’t hit lefties well in years.

      • bring buck back

        Neither has Andruw Jones.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

Jones crushed lefties just last year.

        • YanksFanInBeantown

Eric Chavez’s wRC+ against lefties this year is 1.

          No, that’s not a typo

    • YanksFanInBeantown

      TMITN? Is that you?

I can’t imagine anyone else so divorced from reality as to call Aaron Cook “good at baseball”

      • Need Pitching & Hitting

Pretty sure that was referring to Chavez.

        • YanksFanInBeantown

I did not see the “and”

          So now I feel stupid.

In my defense though, someone with the handle “bring buck back” doesn’t really deserve the benefit of the doubt.

  • Tom

Nice job to get around 2 hits that inning but this is where the offense failure is huge.

If it’s 4-1, 5-1 Phelps is not pulled and the Yankees aren’t patching together 1-2 innings. This is what happens when you completely botch pretty much EVERY decision over a 4 batter stretch after a leadoff double (Jones was the only reasonable move that inning)

  • DC

Has Eddard proclaimed Swisher the top defensive 1st baseman in baseball?

    • RkyMtnYank

He might well qualify for that just the way Palmeiro did against Tino.

  • Cy Pettitte

sending a thank you card to Mrs. Pedroia ASAP.

  • Karl Krawfid

Aceves looks sick man Jeez he lost a lot of weight.

    • Marcy

Both he and Bobby V. haven’t looked too good.

  • MannyGeee

Wow, I would totally bone Pedroias pregnant wife.. Good looking pregnant broad

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

Congrats to Dustin Pedroia on what’s sure to be an annoyingly gritty child.

    • MannyGeee

      well played

    • Defensive Indifference

I fully expect him to play second base tomorrow. From a rocking chair. While breastfeeding his infant. From his knees.

    • Marcy

Actually, I hope all goes well for them. Their little boy was in a full body cast for most of the 1st year of his life. Hopefully, things are better this time – it’s totally separate from on the field.

And the gross Geee above…you’re disgusting – but you already know that.

      • AaronGuielWithASmile

I absolutely wish all the best for them. I can’t stand that little bastard, but it’s not Pedroia’s fault — and certainly not his wife or kids’ — that I hate the Sox just a little too much.

  • Brian S.

Derek Jetah is a stahting shortstawp

    • Jimmy

Next hit ties him with Willie Mays (!!) for #10 all-time.

  • MannyGeee

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh Alex. I miss the the old you that used to hit

    • Chilango

Not that good off the juice is he

      • MannyGeee

, juice or no juice, he’s just not swinging for shit… But the narrative is cool too

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

Kind of amazing that Granderson has hit 37 homers, but this is just his second multi-homer game of the year.

  • MannyGeee

I think Granderson is the kind of guy who reads on the plane. Like, real books, not like 50 Shades or whatever the fuck…

  • Tom

Schilling repeating the “you don’t score in the playoffs with HRs” meme. (Making the ESPN broadcast complete)

They showed a graphic of most runs via HR – the top 3 (NY, CHI, BAL) would make 3 of the 5 playoff teams.

    • Tom

Again… Girardi is asleep at the wheel.

If he’s going to bring in Logan why not bring him and turn Salty around to his much weaker side?

He’s trying to steal outs again and now has Eppley against a lefty Salty and Logan against a right handed pinch hitter.

  • Mike N

It would be great to bring in another run this inning.

    Joba in the bottom?

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

Great AB by Swisher. Way to force Aceves to throw your pitch.

  • Cy Pettitte

why is Bobby smelling the ball? WTF

    • Mike N

      He just loves baseball!

    • MannyGeee

He actually takes used balls home and boils them for soup… He’s saving money, as he not expecting to be employed in 2013…

  • MannyGeee

Oh schilling is a fat fuck with a big mouth. I admire the fact that that Nomar still looks like an athlete…

    • AaronGuielWithASmile

Not that Schilling ever had much credibility to begin with, but after his 38 studio debacle I’m not sure how anyone would listen to him anymore.

      • MannyGeee

        #realAmericanhero

  • Mike

Prob pointed out before, but Yankees I believe, and correct me if I’m wrong, have alternated wins and losses ever since the 2nd game of the Tampa series.

Someone mentioned on another site, maybe Mike mentioned it in an article already or someone mentioned it here, the Yankees have not win 2 games in a row since August 14th and 15th. That’s not Bad, that’s BAD.

    • MannyGeee

Axisa called this out in today’s article, no?

      • Mike

As I said, maybe Mike already mentioned it. I did not get to today’s articles.

    • Anthony

According to Kramerica the last time was the Rangers series. Appalling!

  • Chilango

Matchup in the 7th then Joba to Soriano?

    • Mike N

      D-Rob isn’t available today?

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Huh… Camden yards looking a little emptier with the rays in town…

    • AaronGuielWithASmile

I do think that Baltimore will start filling their stadium again if they can win consistently. It’s tough for a lot of people to understand how badly Angelos nuked that franchise.

The Rays, however, are a lost cause.

      • MannyGeee

If not now, then never. This team is on the cusp of making the playoffs for the first time since Ripkin, and they can’t fill one of the best parks in America with $10 tickets. I pay $6 to see the AA fisher cats.

        If not now, then never

        • AaronGuielWithASmile

          Fair enough.

As an aside, I used to live in New Hampshire. Fisher Cats games are awesome!

  • Cy Pettitte

Rays are Yankee-like tonight in their RISP fail.

    • Anthony

Of course. They’ll do that for the rest of the games against the O’s but when they come play us, every player in their lineup magically becomes Miguel Cabrera.

      Only slightly exaggerating

  • Mike N

    Hmm. Eppley.

  • Brian S.

    Fuck, not Eppley.

  • Kramerica Industries

By all means, keep giving up extra base hits to Saltalamacchia.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

You mean the ROOGY can’t get out lefties?

    Shocking?

    • MannyGeee

      Who knew…

  • Chilango

    Take Eppley out NOW.

  • Kramerica Industries

Still looking like there won’t be a shutdown inning.

    This team is something else.

  • Chilango

    Nava for fuck’s sake.

  • Karl Krawfid

Mix and match, Mix and match.

    Fucking kill me.

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

Salty is slow as hell, but that’s still embarrassingly bad baserunning.

I won’t complain about Thompson for a little while, that’s for sure.

  • MannyGeee

For the love of all things holy… Cut Stewart, leave Cervelli in AAA, send Martin wherever… Give me Jose Molina back.

  • Brian S.

    The fuck is this shit?

  • BENICIO DEL TORO

Assuming we make the playoffs, which is still far from guaranteed, hopefully we won’t be seeing Eppley, Rapada, or any of our other crappy middle relievers will see any playing time.

And just as I’m saying that, Logan gives up a booming double. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit nervous right now…

  • RkyMtnYank

So mix and matching means you leave Logan in to face a righty and you bring Joba in to face a lefty. Yes, well done Joe.

  • Tom

Again, Girardi is asleep at the wheel.

If he’s going to bring in Logan why not bring him and turn Salty around to his much weaker side? He’s trying to steal outs again and now has Eppley against a lefty Salty and Logan against a right handed pinch hitter.

Basically he once again gets the worst possible matchup possible.

It’s incomprehensible how truly bad he manages with an expanded roster…I didn’t think he could top the top of the 6th, but he’s trying to do it in the bottom of the 7th.

    • Mike

You should read what Pete Abraham tweeted

“Joe Girardi with an expanded roster is a dangerous thing”

      • MannyGeee

        Ha… That’s funny

    • BENICIO DEL TORO

      FIRE GIRARDI!

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Girardi loves to mix and match, but is completely flummoxed by the back to back switch hitters.

(Hint Joe: maybe try a non-OOGY)

  • Kramerica Industries

    Eh, whatever.

Not gonna gripe about getting the out there.

  • Cy Pettitte

this is such bullshit. come on.

  • Kramerica Industries

    And that’s what CANNOT happen.

    Christ Almighty with this team.

  • Marcy

    OY! Joba & his slider

  • WhittakerWalt

Joba’s back to hanging the slider, I see.

  • MannyGeee

    Well… I guess Jobas un-back again… Bummer

  • JobaWockeeZ

Next time get the out at home. it’s way too frekaing early to play the outs > runs game.

    • AaronGuielWithASmile

I disagree, no sense forcing a play at the plate with a 4 run lead.

  • Mike N

Oh, crap! Get this fucking third out!

  • Karl Krawfid

    Way to go Yankee pitching.

4 run lead down to 2.

    • RkyMtnYank

      No, it’s Girardi’s fault.

  • MannyGeee

Jobas mad now… That’s pretty cool

    • MannyGeee

I love that fucking kid. He’s just a gorilla of a man.

  • Mike N

    PHEW!!

  • FIPster Doofus

Is Robertson available for the eighth?

  • Chilango

Charge those runs to Girardi. Clueless. Fuck.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Jobber back out for the 8th? Cause there is no way Robertson should be pitching tonight, he threw a lot of high leverage pitches over almost 2 innings last night.

  • Mike

Now who the heck pitches the 8th? I really hope Joe doesn’t do a 6 out save.

Of course a couple of Yankees runs solves some problems, but easier said than done

    • Mike

*Joe doesn’t do a 6 out save for Soriano

  • Tom

This shit inning is on Girardi.

If he brings in Logan to face Salty this might be a 1-2-3 inning.

By not doing that he compounded the issue as if Logan was in the game, as soon as Nava is PH for with a righty he could have then brought in Joba (which would have forced another PH’r or got a favorable matchup)

All this because he was trying to steal one FUCKING out from Eppley. It’s beyond annoying now and moved into incompetence.

    Salty lefty: .768
    Salty righty: .583

So clearly you have him hit lefty against Eppley… idiot…

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

I agree with all this. Nava wasn’t PH for though.

  • MannyGeee

ESPN2 has their camera reeeeeeal tight and their mics podded way up for the illusion of crowd noise. Wow, how things change in 96 hours

    • Cy Pettitte

I loved when they said “now listen to this place come alive” when it got to 1-2. it’s like Baltimore is the new Boston.

      • MannyGeee

Listen to this place come alive…. *turns mics up even louder*

  • Tom

    Why is Jones even in?

If only the Yankees had a lefty on the bench who plays good defense (and will be put in ANYWAY!)

  • MannyGeee

Jose Iglecias gets that ball….. Asshole

    • Cy Pettitte

      Enrique Iglesias gets that ball

      • MannyGeee

        Julio Iglecias gets that ball

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

          Eric Almonte gets that ball.

          • MannyGeee

            Eduardo Nunez gets that ball…..

And flings it into the bleachers.

  • MannyGeee

Hooray for all you Dickerson fanboys…. Guess who gets to run into a DP tonight????!?!

  • Widget

Is this team ever capable of a damn shutdown inning?

  • MannyGeee

    Saltalamaccia…. Defensive catcher

  • Mike N

    Finally a decent fucking bunt!

  • Mike

No Russell Martin to pinch hit?

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

ULTRA SMALL BALL, error, stolen base, sacrifice.

  • MannyGeee

Great bunt by Ichiro…. I mean, a beauty!

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Ichiro bunt against a RHP to get to Chris Stewart.

    Are you fucking kidding me?

    • Tom

PINCH RUN! Nunez (then bring in Cervelli or Stewart)

How many bad moves can he string together?

  • Mike

Whoa whoa, Joe doing a safety squeeze? Guess he stole Joe Maddon’s binder tonight.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Joe G: dude wtf? you do all this small ball stuff, then leave it to Chris “I shouldn’t be in the majors” Stewart to get the run in?

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

I’ve defended him most of the season, but these past few weeks he’s been pretty damn close to incompetent.

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Same, but he managed himself into a corner last inning and then did this here. I like the guy, but I think he tries to be a little to clever and out manage the game itself.

    • MannyGeee

      He loves him some Stewie

  • Mike N

    Insurance RUNS!!!!!!!!!! DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Mike

    GIDP coming up

If not, then a single or bloop double to right

    • Brian S.

There are too many Mike’s in this thread!!!

      • Mike

LOL I’ll write MikeB then next time.

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

    And there goes the season.

  • Kramerica Industries

You GOTTA be fucking kidding me.

    0-12.

  • Cy Pettitte

christ are you kidding me? If Jeter is hurt….

  • DC

    ah, shit.

  • Mike N

    OH, NO!!!!!! WHAT HAPPENED???????

    • DC

      Jeter came up limping.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

God no…just please, no. please for the love of baseball not Jeter too..

  • Marcy

    No, no, no

  • MannyGeee

Shitshitshitshitshit. Jeter limping. He came up lame when he slid into 2nd last AB but seemed to walk it off.

    FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACK. This sucks

  • Karl Krawfid

    Fucking Yankees.

Hitting into double plays and getting hurt.

  • Brian S.

So that’s why Cano doesn’t hustle.

  • Tom

    Dammit… this is beyond absurd.

Stewart shouldn’t have hit and once he magically reached put in Nunez, have him run and take the GIDP away

This is about as poorly a game can possibly be managed. The only way this can get worse is to get Lowe into the game.

    • DC

Listening to you, I would think the Yanks were getting clobbered.

      • Tom

The only reason this game is remotely close is because Girardi is an idiot. It should be about 7-2 by now and instead the bullpen is going to be overworked and short for tomorrow because Girardi is clueless

Nearly every move since the 6th inning on has resulted in pretty much the least favorable matchup you can get.

The Yankees are winning in spite of Girardi; it’s frustrating that he is having such a negative impact on this game when the Yankees should be cruising and the bullpen should be getting rest.

        • DC

So the RISP failures are Girardi’s fault? I didn’t see his name in the line up.

          • Tom

Yes, when Girardi is putting the worst possible option up in those situations.

He pinch hit Nix to bunt…. which took the bat out of Jones hand…. which led to Ichiro hitting against a lefty… which led to Stewart. That sequence took the bat out of his 2 pinch hitters and left the two VERY WORST options hitting (Ichiro against a lefty and Stewart against… anyone)

He had Eppley pitching to a switch hitter who has an OPS 200 points better lefty and is SUB .600 hitting righty. Sure Eppley gave up the hit, but Girardi choosing the worst matchup possible wasn’t a factor?

He had Jones leading off against a righty (got fortunate with a walk), then with one out he has Chris Stewart trying to get a runner home? With 2 catchers on the bench?

So yes the manager owns some of it when he is consistently getting the worst matchup possible. The RISP failures are Girardi’s fault when he is consistently getting his worst hitters with the platoon DISadvantage up in those situations.

            • Tom

Excuse me, the Jones AB was an error not a walk.

            • DC

              Girardi doesn’t swing the bat.

              • Tom

So by extension if he pinch hit Kuroda for Stewart, it would be Kuroda’s fault for not getting the run in.

                Because Girardi wasn’t hitting, right?

                • DC

                  Reductio ad absurdum.

                  • Tom

Latin for Girardi is a moron?

Your argument is Girardi isn’t hitting. Have you seen Stewarts slash line? Not all that much better than a pitcher.

I can’t believe you would defend his moves in this game and say “well the players should have done better, not Girardi’s fault”

Why pinch hit at all then? It’s the hitter’s fault/success, what’s the point of trying to get a favorable matchup? (this is a serious question)

  • Jag

May I just say “FUCK” if Jeter is hurt

  • MannyGeee

    Precautionary…. Please say precautionary

    • Brian S.

      Testicles

  • DZ

If Jeter is out for longer than a week this season is over

    • Chilango

The season is basically over anyway.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Wow…they want Nunez just nowhere near the field at all.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

I’m trying to figure out who Girardi hates most: Cervelli or Nunez.

      • MannyGeee

Simple… By playing Stewart as much as he has, he obvusly hates all of us most!

    • Mike

Nix over Nunez in the field makes sense though. I prefer Nunez for once to Start a game and we can use his decent bat

And I said it before and will say it again, I’d take my chances with Nunez in the OF over Andruw Jones who can’t Hit or Field (except at Fenway he can hit somehow)

      • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

It’s easy for any right hand hitter in the majors to hit at a stadium that plays shallower than a Babe Ruth League depth down the right field line.

        • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

          left field line.

  • CBean

OMG I turned on the tv and Jeter broke. /panics

  • MannyGeee

Wow… DRob came to play today.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

So Kuroda, Hughes,Soriano, and Cano are like the only people on the Yankees to not miss any time due to injury or ineffectiveness.

    • VT Yankee Fan

Who would have figured Hughes to be an Iron man?

  • Kramerica Industries

    Absolutely nothing easy.

  • Karl Krawfid

Is it me or does this idiot D-Rob do the same thing night after night?

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

I’ve been very critical of Girardi tonight, but I couldn’t agree more with bringing on Soriano for the 4 out save.

    • Mike

      Absolutely.

    • RkyMtnYank

Why, it’s not like Mo is coming in. Robertson/Soriano is 50/50.

  • Marcy

Dickerson doesn’t know how to play the monster well.

    • Mike

Still would have been a double

    • MannyGeee

They dont have walls like that in AlbanyRochesterSyracuseScrantonDover park..

  • Widget

Is it possible to get any of these bums out? Loney is trash.

    • Karl Krawfid

You would think after he pulled that fastball foul they would throw a breaking ball.

  • EDDARD

Thank God Joe is going to Soriano vs Ross. Robertson had just struck out the previous hitter on the curve in the dirt and then insisted on going fastball after fastball again with 2 strikes to the next hitter! Result? Double down the line. I just don’t get it.

  • MannyGeee

    #4out-untuck

    Do it.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Fully agree with MFIKY here.

    Gotta lock this down.

  • Mike

    Wow, where was that?

    • RkyMtnYank

      low and away

  • Kramerica Industries

    Come the fuck on now.

    No free passes. Finish him.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Wow gift call baby!

  • FIPster Doofus

That looked like a horrible call, but I’ll take it.

  • Kramerica Industries

Wow, what a huge break that was.

That was not a strike. And Marquez has had a shitty zone all night.

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

In Ross and Bobby V’s defense, that looked like a ball to me.

    Can someone using gameday confirm?

  • Mike N

Whoah! That fucker looked like he was gonna rear back and clock the fucking ump with his bat!

  • Effthisnoise

Holy shit Ross looked like he was gonna hit him with the bat

    • Mike N

I know. Right? I’d have been scared if I were the ump.

  • mike_h

    Ross gets tossed

  • MannyGeee

Pedroias gone home for the night, so Cody Ross ipfilling in admirably in the “bitching about calls” department…

    Well done, douchebag

    • FIPster Doofus

His freakout looked justifiable to me.

      • MannyGeee

Bitching about the call….ok,,it was a bad call. Raising your bat and having to be restrained by your manager? Little bit over the line. Trust me, someone in pinstripes does that, and they’d be looking for blood.

        • Kramerica Industries

          I disagree.

It was a bad call that could cost Boston a chance to win. He had every reason to be beside himself in anger. I would be too.

  • RkyMtnYank

It’s not like that really confirms it.

  • Effthisnoise

That was a ball, but the other one 2 pitches before looked like a strike, but still he went ape shit

  • EDDARD

Great call by Alfonso Marquez. That was a strike that just clipped the low end of the zone. Ross should be suspended indefinitely for raising his bat to an umpire.

  • MannyGeee

Bobby V… Fightin for his job… Good for him

    • MannyGeee

That might have been the most cheering I’ve ever heard for Bobby V…

  • Effthisnoise

Normar with a dumb and dumber reference. Classic

  • Kramerica Industries

That was some serious antagonizing by Joe West Alfonso Marquez there.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Idiot baseball night at Fenway.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

That’s what happens when you take on the Centaur.

    • MannyGeee

Totally has Centaur tracks all over his ass…

  • Kramerica Industries

Orioles just flashed some tremendous fundamentals to escape the 9th inning.

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Is it still 2-2? I really hope they play till some ungodly hour just out of spite.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Andrew miller looks like Jesus.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

Johnny Damon is offended by that remark.

      • Karl Krawfid

        Geico caveman.

  • RkyMtnYank

Wonder if Miller feels dumb for having to fix his hair like a girl.

  • MannyGeee

    Fucking Orioles…. Goddammit

    • Karl Krawfid

      clutch.

  • Cy Pettitte

fuck the Orioles. Nate fucking Mclouth with a game winning hit? is this a fucking joke.

  • Chilango

    O’s walkoff Nate McKlouth

    • Marcy

      Farnsy

    • Marcy

I take it back, apologies to Dickerson

  • Effthisnoise

Annnnnd mclouth walks off against the rays

  • Kramerica Industries

    Surreal finish in Baltimore.

Hopefully, this 1st place stint for the O’s is short-lived.

  • Mike

    Orioles won

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

We’re in 2nd place at the moment

  • Effthisnoise

After a bunt to put the RISP. And then a hit with RISP. 2 things the yanks can’t do

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    lucky 13

  • Kramerica Industries

0-13 with RISP. 1-25 in this series.

    That’s truly remarkable.

  • Mike

    Darn

Alright Soriano, get 3 outs please.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

We’re officially not in first place :( Gotta pull this one out.

  • EDDARD

I wanted the Os to take 2/3 and they’ve already taken 2. If we can hold on we’ll be 3 up on the Rays.

  • Cy Pettitte

here it comes. don’t fight the loss. just embrace 2nd place.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Come the fuck on Raffy.

No more runs. Can’t afford that.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    nice fucking pitch

    Please don’t blow this.

  • Effthisnoise

    And here we go

  • Mike

So how big was that Strike 3 then before?

  • MannyGeee

    I miss Mariano…. I reeeeeeeally miss mariano

    • Kramerica Industries

Even Mo was good for a blown save at Fenway once a year.

  • Karl Krawfid

I have no faith in this team.

  • Nathan

    Seriously?

  • RkyMtnYank

    This is gonna hurt bad.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    Seriously?

  • Mike

    Wow, OMG. Holy hell

  • Kramerica Industries

    Fucking heart attack right there.

  • Nathan

Just had a mini-heart attack on out #1 just now.

  • Mike N

HOLY FUCK! I thought that was gone.

  • Effthisnoise

    Holy shit

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    Jesus Christ. Nothing is easy…

  • Mike N

BTW, who thinks Ibanez would have caught that?

    • Mike

      Not me

  • Karl Krawfid

    Keep hanging em!

  • Kramerica Industries

Raffy is getting hammered right now.

    Hunker down. NOW.

  • MannyGeee

Everything is tattoo’d right now.. Fair, foul, everything is getting hit hard

  • TheLastClown

The Yankees will win this game.

  • VT Yankee Fan

Imagine how rough this would be if Boston had an MLB lineup.

    • DC

Imagine if the Yankees had their full lineup.

  • Chilango

Sori sucks tonight. Right on time.

  • Mikhel

Batting practice with Soriano in there… it will be near a miracle if the bosox don’t tie and win it.

  • Kramerica Industries

    One more of those, Raffy.

  • Mike N

    ONE MORE OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • flamingo

    C’mon, just one more.

  • Karl Krawfid

    ROFL!!!!!!

  • Kramerica Industries

    Oh for fucks sake!

  • MannyGeee

Left ankle sprain… No big thing, per Pedro Gomez’ secret inside source

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    Can’t make this shit up.

  • Athenian

The beauty of watching the Yankees is deciding if they will suck from the beginning or find a way to continue to lose. At this point total failure is the best option. To think anything else is foolish.

  • Kramerica Industries

Gonna have to finish against Ellsbury.

    God could this be ugly.

  • MannyGeee

    Fuck Jacoby.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    UNTUCK MOTHER FUCKERS.

  • Mike N

    YEAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PHEW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Holy Fuck!!!

  • Karl Krawfid

Shit ended while I was looking down.

  • Effthisnoise

    Fucking fuck

  • Kramerica Industries

    UNTUCK THAT MOTHERFUCKER

  • MannyGeee

    Wow… What a nail biter

I thinks lost 5 years of my life tonight

  • Bartolo’s Colon

good that we won, but god damn this team blows. on the other hand, the o’s are legit

  • stuart a

another masterpiece from the empire. timelye hitting and all.

what were they 0 for 13 with RISP. now 1 for 25 or so in the series..

another solid effort. eppley as good as ever…alot of cluth hits, not sure where to start.

they tried everything in there power to give away the game but boston with pedroia going to the hospital fell short.

In victories as in loses, we must always be critical because no team is perfect.

      • RetroRob

You seem to be under the belief that he’s actual fan of the team. He’s not.

  • Kramerica Industries

Isn’t it funny how “claps of relief” always sting much more than “claps of gratitude”?

My hands feel like they were stung by a thousand bees.

  • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

…I don’t give a fuck about the time of the game, or how unmanagable it was, or the Land Rover Drive of the Game. Just get to the god damned post game show and tell me how much time Jeets is going to miss.

  • Mike

Lol go on ESPN’s MLB page quickly. it says Behind Curtis Granderson’s pair of homets (yes a T, homets, not homers)

    • http://thecarsboneblog.tumblr.com Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

      hahaha so it does.

    • Kramerica Industries

      Screenshotted.

  • Mike

Bone bruise for Jeter, been dealing with it for days

  • anon

How does Cook get credited with the L when he gave up 3 runs and the RS scored 4? Shouldn’t Aceves be the pitcher of record?

    • Evan3457

No. Cook left the game with the Sox behind. They never tied it up to take him off the hook. He gets the “L” via scoring rules.
