The Yankees have been atop the AL East — either tied or sole possession — since June 11th, exactly half-a-season ago (81 games). For the fourth time in a week, a loss tonight coupled with an Orioles win would put them into second place for the first time since the finale of the Subway Series in CitiField. Yeah, it’s been a while. At the same time, a win tonight and an Orioles loss will continue to keep New York in first place for at least another day. I much prefer that. Here’s the lineup…

Hmmm, I think I’ve seen this before!
No less than 15 times. Ugh.
Would really be nice if this team could catch fire the way the Phillies and Brewers have in recent weeks.
At least now the NL playoff picture is as mind-blowing as the AL one.
Let’s hope the Yankees win and some runs into the Red Sox dugout to catch a pop up and crushes Bobby Valentine in the process.

Anyone else wondering why Girardi insists on having Ichiro bat 8th instead of 9th? Look at today’s lineup, you have Raul Ibanez, Eric Chavez, and Ichiro Suzuki back to back to back so late in games you’re just asking for a lefty to face them. Why not simply switch Stewart and Ichiro so you at least break up 1 of the lefties as well as having the fairly hot Ichiro hitting in front of Jeter and give us some vintage Brett Gardener production.
I agree with batting Ichiro 9th, but having Chris Stewart break up the lefties isn’t going to influence bullpen decisions.
You can always pinch hit Martin for Stewart late in a game to break up the lefties though. They would actually have to respect that the way Martin has hit of late.
Look who you’re breaking the lefties up with: Stewart. So what. Too bad there’s no one else.
They’ve been alternating wins and losses so tonight will be a win. We finally get to play against a righty so we can sit Pearce, Jones and Nix in favor of Chavez, Ibanez and Ichiro. If this lineup can’t destroy Aaron Cook then they need to blow this whole thing up.

I am definitely in the let Grandy walk camp, but I’m not sure what he’d be worth in a trade. Also in the keep Swish camp, with two caveats. One, he doesn’t stick to his guns about Werth money. Two, the Yankees don’t get Justin Upton.
I’m sure some team will overpay in prospects for a “good” defensive CF with great power and some speed.
Meanwhile I also agree Swish is a goner if he asks for Werth money but sicne the rest of the league doens’t think of him that highly I doubt he’ll get it.
I would love Justin Upton but Cashman keeps the prospects unless it’s for a guy who can throw 95.

To be fair, Nick Swisher does have a career ERA of 0.
He’s saying Cash will only trade the blue chip prospects for a front end SP.
Austin Jackson and Ian Kennedy weren’t quite as highly rated as Montero, but they were still top prospects.
He traded front line prospects for Granderson.
The first time he actually traded top prospects for a hitter.

I think that has more to do with what the team needs were and availability of players to fill those needs in free agency.

Justice yes. I don’t think Soriano qualifies has a prospect though.
Joaquin Arias was their #3 prospect at the time of the trade (according to BA).
The lone exception since Abreu and they didn’t even have prospects then. It was crap.
You’re probably right about Granderson. But the Yankees need to make the team better in that trade for me to be okay with it. Moving Gardner to center and making a second trade for a left fielder satisfies that requirement as well.
Regarding Upton, I think it’s unlikely, but I wouldn’t rule it out because Cashman doesn’t like trading for position players. If anything, Towers will ask for too much. He is a great buy low candidate though (relatively speaking).
Sure let’s keep swisher who likes hitting in playoff games certainly not me and you.

Anyway, I’m sure Buck is a good manager. That he wasn’t was never the argument against him. But read through that link and tell me that he is at all rational, intelligent, or comprehensible.

Oh, I agree. That’s why I said this season will only add to the legend (which I mean sarcastically). Yet I’m not going to knock, Buck. I believe he’s one of the better managers in the game. I think most managers who are hired already have a level of skill that teams have determined make them MLB managers, and thus by the time it’s all said and done don’t have a major impact on a team’s win total. They win some, they lose some. Yet there are some managers who I believe are net positive in the win column, and there are some who will be a net negative. The difference between hiring the bad manager and the good manager can add up to a number of wins. Showalter to me is in that camp who will add wins. Girardi to me is in the neutral camp. I’d rather have Showalter managing the Yankees, but at least Joe is not costing the Yankees wins (I think!)

In the last 24 games, the Yankees have hit 30 HR in 800 AB (26.7 AB/HR).
They are substituting HR for 2B to some extent, except with a .235 BA over the same stretch it’s hard to drive those guys in.

He had ratboy struckout, the ump just squeezed him on that 1-2 pitch before the double. The Loney single was just a groundball; if it’s at some one there’s a decent chance that’s a scoreless inning.
I think this is a common pattern for Yankee-born pitchers, right? Of all the hot-to-trot prospects that’ve climbed through the pinstriped farm it seems that all of them are clearly capable of going once through the order, but once that ONE becomes crooked and the pitchers starts seeing guys for the 2nd or 3rd time . . . It’s a whole other story. I’m sure this phenomenon could be said of many pitchers but I feel as though it plagues the Yankee blood particularly much.
Maybe, but how many “hot to trot” prospects are we talking about here? There’s Hughes, okay. Phelps was never a top prospect, ditto Nova. They were projected as back end guys. Joba is in the bullpen, but was actually fairly successful as a starter.

This is par for the RAB course. As soon as the starting pitcher gives up a single run and allows another man on base, many people are calling for him to be pulled immediately. This is, of course, delusional. You can’t just pull your starter at the first hint of trouble every game, or within a week, your bullpen will be toast.
Exactly, the team starts playing not to lose after scoring only a few runs early. Playing not to lose will not help you win games.
This is true especially with our the pen has been playing lately. I think people react that way because of the troubles the starting pitching has had lately. I love Phelps, but he hasn’t lasted very long in his previous few starts. To be honest, no one will ever be 100% sure on when to take a pitcher out. That inning with the lead-off triple could have easily gotten worse.
Bring home this fucking RISP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
