Game 144: Three Straight?

(J. Meric/Getty)

The Yankees are back in the Bronx for the final homestand of the season — they play three games against the Red Sox in Yankee Stadium to close out the season, but I don’t really consider that a “homestand,” per se — and in come the Rays looking to gain ground in the AL East race. Actually, I’m sure Tampa is just looking to gain ground in any race at this point. They’re four games out of both the division and wildcard spots and just need to start winning, like the Yankees. After going a month without winning two consecutive games, can the Bombers make it three straight tonight? Here’s the starting nine…

DH Derek Jeter
RF Nick Swisher
3B Alex Rodriguez
2B Robinson Cano
Russell Martin
LF Andruw Jones
CF Curtis Granderson
1B Steve Pearce
SS Eduardo Nunez

LHP CC Sabathia

Tonight’s game is scheduled to start a little after 7pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and MLB Network nationally. Enjoy.

  1. The Real Greg says:

People sitting in the seats on the first best side better get their nets ready.

  2. zzzzz says:

martin is batting 5th? did i miss something? has he been batting 5th lately? or is girardi hoping he stays hot?

  3. Get Phelps Up says:

    Poor Casey McGehee.

  4. bring buck back says:

I still don’t understand why Andruw Jones is allowed to play. I think my grandmother could play better than Andruw Jones. She isn’t even alive. Why not just stick Casey McGhee out there? He probably wouldn’t be any worse on defense and might be a little better on offense. Seriously, did we give up Chad Qualls for nothing?!

Granderson is finally looking hopeful but the rest of 6-9 makes my eyes hurt so bad. 5, too, for that matter. Russ hasn’t been terrible lately but he is not a #5 hitter. “Nunez, SS” also makes me wince.

    • The Real Greg says:

Casey McGehee has not payed outfield in 3 years.

      3 years.

    • Darren says:

No disrespect, but I doubt your grandmama could play better than Jones. He’s very bad, but not that bad. You’re just exaggerating to make a point.

    • Get Phelps Up says:

McGehee would be way worse than Jones in the OF, come on. They should put Nix out there with McGehee at 1B.

    • Nice Scheister says:

Seriously, did we give up Chad Qualls for nothing?!

I laughed. Considering he was released by a sub .500 team prior to being picked up, he kinda sucked.

    • McGehee shouldn’t be in the outfield, I’m just curious as to what he did for Joe to distrust him so much that he’s running Steve Pearce out there over him.

    • Laz says:

Nunez is a much better hitter than Nix. Jones and Pearce are already easy outs, its tough to give another easy out in nix.

      • Nix isn’t actually an “easy out” against LHP, Price might be a different story because if he’s on just about everybody is an easy out for him. I give Nix a lot of shit because John and Suzyn love him and give him far too much credit for anything, but he has hit LHP to a wRC+ of 86 this season. Not great, but serviceable from a back up infielder.

        • Laz says:

Sub .700 ops for both lefties and righties. I think Nix has done a decent job this year, but he is getting way too much playing time in my opinion, and when you already have Pearce and Jones in the lineup it becomes too much.

  5. Nice Scheister says:

I hope Swisher has a good game tonight. My other wish is an improved .233 average w/ RISP moving forward for this series, it would be glorious.

  6. Chris says:

Might as well run Steve Pearce out there every day until he finally has a good game…

  7. EDDARD says:

So glad they gave Nunie another game at SS. He wrecks havoc on the base paths and he’s a better hitter than Nix. CC needs to step up today and finally win one of these big starts.

  8. Andy Pettitte's Fibula says:

Other than their 2, 3 and 4 hitters, the Rays lineup is pretty weak.

  9. Nice Scheister says:

LET’S GO! C’mon CC, the last time I was this stoked about a CC start he gave up a Grandslam to Pena in the 1st inning! Buckle down big man!!

  10. Roadgeek Adam says:

Not this umpiring crew again. Barry (HP), Darling (1B), Emmel (2B), Jerry Meals (3B)

    I fear.

  11. Hummingbird S. says:

    CC’s stuff looks so pedestrian..

  12. Chilango says:

CC’s at 91. Hope he can dial it up.

  13. Hummingbird S. says:

    He’s not fooling anyone.

  14. Karl Krawfid says:

    cc doesn’t look sharp.

  15. EDDARD says:

Is that Jerry Meals at 1st again?

  16. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    The 2012 NY Yankees.

  17. Roadgeek Adam says:

  18. The Real Greg says:

    He’s out

  19. Nice Scheister says:

    Blind 1B ump is blind.

  20. Andy Pettitte's Fibula says:

Why the hell doesn’t Girardi run out there?

  21. Hummingbird S. says:

Martin blows, and the ump blew the call. No surprises all around.

  22. Chilango says:

    fuck. he was out

  23. Roadgeek Adam says:

Well, that didn’t take long to be an umpire problem.

Jerry Meals is at 3rd for the record.

  24. Karl Krawfid says:

    Wow Martin. just fail.

  25. Nice Scheister says:

I’m afraid is ask Joe if CC’s healthy.

    • Nice Scheister says:

      • Roadgeek Adam says:

Even if we had robot umps, it wouldn’t do much good.

Robot umps are incapable of understanding the human body, especially if its a blown call. What do you do if a robot ump gets confused?

Then they’ll go all HAL9000 on us.

        • At least that would be fun to watch. Also I’m sure using just the camera angles we have already in place there would never be a blown call at first base again. Just feed all those angles into a program designed to find out whether runner or ball get there first, I’m sure it’s relatively easy for software designers to figure that out.

        • Nice Scheister says:

I agree we don’t have the technology yet for a “roboump” per-say but an ump in the booth could have instant access to calls. With real time push of a button on close plays indication fair-foul, safe-out, strike-ball. Still has humans involved just aided with “roboump” technology. Headsets, whatever, just get the damn calls right!

  26. Alkaline says:

    Stonewall Nunez comes through!

  27. Electric nunez says:

Martin better be gone next year i would take shoppack or piezinski atbthis point untill sanchez is ready

  28. Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

I tried asking this in today’s chat, but Mike didn’t grab the question, so I’ll ask it here:

My wife vetoed the following names for my newborn girl, but which of these would have been best?

  29. Nice Scheister says:

I wonder what happens when an umpire crew is terrible? I fire people that can’t perform to the expectations in my place of employment and the most we pay them is 40-50K per year. These fuckers make GREAT money and some straight suck ass. This bullshit of missed calls, terrible zones and just the constant smell of asperceam is disgusting.

  30. Electric nunez says:

How do we get this same crew one week later???
Is mlb out to screw us

  31. EDDARD says:

Price is overthrowing like CC did last outing. We might have a shot tonight.

  32. I was just looking at the BP work load page earlier…Logan has to be available no? He’s only thrown single digit pitches even though he’s thrown 3 straight days.

  33. Hummingbird S. says:

some very nice ABs so far

  34. bring buck back says:

Can’t believe Mr. Defense Martin let that strike 3 go all the way to the wall. And Sabathia 25 pitches in the inning, even with Martin’s screwup no excuse, he’s the ace. At this point I’d almost rather see Casey McGehee pitch than Sabathia. I’d rather him catch than Martin too for that matter.

  35. Hummingbird S. says:

what a surprise, Cano choked again with RISP.

    • WhittakerWalt says:

He didn’t strike out on a pitch in the dirt. His approach was good and he hit the ball hard. That’s all you can do. Unless you think Jeter’s a choke artist because he also hits into a ton of DPs?

      • You must be new here. People were legit calling for Jeter’s head and dubbed him Captain DP in the first half of last season.

        • WhittakerWalt says:

DPs are frustrating no matter who hits them. Jeter was hitting too many groundballs at the time, so the DPs happened. When he’s going good he hits line drives the other way. Same with Cano. I think Cano hits a lot fewer groundballs when he’s going good.
Either way, that was a good at-bat with a bad result. I can’t add it to the case against Cano.

  36. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Oh good. More RISPFail.

  37. The Real Greg says:

That was not going to end well from the start. Like what Cano tried to do but hit it right at somebody.

  38. Nice Scheister says:

Robbie Cano: The poster child for the RISP disease the Yanks have been plagued with this year.

  39. your mom says:

I see we’re going to continue the abysmal RISP fail streak.

  40. Kramerica Industries says:

I see rally killing DP’s remain a strong part of this team’s arsenal.

  41. Electric nunez says:

Napoli i know he is not lighting it up this year but at least he can catch.

  42. Chilango says:

RISPFAIL against the TB staff is deadly. 2 – 34 won’t cut it in this series.

  43. Karl Krawfid says:

Gonna be CC’s fault if we lose the game right?

    Or the pathetic offense?

  44. The Real Greg says:

This is the RISPfail series. Both teams have struggled with this stat.

    Tonight, they are both 0-1

  45. stuart a says:

going out tonight so I will not provide my sunshine to this site.

cano doing his thing in the first. i was wrong so he is about 220 with RISP and 180 with 2 outs RISP. No matter cano sucks….

    Good evening all.

    • jjyank says:

“going out tonight so I will not provide my sunshine to this site.”

I knew today was going to be a good day.

      • Going out tonight (to get more hand lotion, baby oil, and tissues) so I will not provide my sunshine to this site

I know how to read between the lines.

        • jjyank says:

I got more of a “Going out tonight (to rob small children, kill a few puppies, and piss on Cano’s baseball card” vibe.

          • Rocky Road Redemption says:

I like how we group pissing on Cano’s baseball card with robbing small children and killing puppies. Now there’s a Yankees fan with his priorities straight.

As a side note, that first line was a major tip-off. stuart a is a legit troll. Not an idiot who acts like this just because, but a troll. That first sentence just pushed it a bit too far for me-he’s pulling this act for shits and giggles.

Admittedly, he’s doing pretty well at it.

            • jjyank says:

Haha I just threw that in for fun. Besides, I’m pretty sure stuart has been revealed as a Mets fan who is trolling, hence all the Ike Davis stuff early on. What’s sad is how much time he spends around here if that really is the case.

              • Rocky Road Redemption says:

I suppose if that’s true there’s not much else for him to do if the Mets are sucking like this.

                • jjyank says:

If the Yankees were in the Mets’ position I would…I dunno, read a book, watch a movie, go for a run, play some xbox, hang out with friends…? It’s still really sad that he would choose to spend almost every day trolling a Yankee blog.

    • Get Phelps Up says:

ARod and Cano are going to have monster games.

    • Nice Scheister says:

      I’ll miss you Ethel.

  46. Rocky Road Redemption says:

You know, with all this talk about how we have this much easier second half schedule these two series’ against the Rays and A’s won’t exactly be a picnic.

    • The Real Greg says:

It will depend with the A;s if they have clinched a playoff spot or not.

      • Tom says:

No it won’t. As usual, logic faul.

It’s not like the A’s series is at the end of the year (There’s 3 series after the A’s/Yankees series). And even if they are in prime position for a WC spot you think they might want homefield for a WC game?

They also close with 7 games against Texas after that series, so they also may still be playing for the division.

        • Tom says:

          logic *fail*

        • Rocky Road Redemption says:

Within seven games at this point in the season is not even close to being competitive for the division.

          • Need Pitching & Hitting says:

They’re only 3 games behind Texas. They have 7 games remaining against Texas.

          • Tom says:

Perhaps you misread my comment – they have 7 games against Texas (out of the last 10)

They are currently just 3 games out. So the 9 or 10 games between now and then are important even if they have a WC spot mostly tied up (so they can be withing striking distance for the division with all those head to head games).

For some the media seems to think that division race is over.

  47. Chilango says:

Jump on this fcker let’s go…

  48. jjyank says:

Nice to see Martin heating up. He’s at .306/.419/.528 over the last 2 weeks, not including that hit.

  49. John is saying that Jones should try to go the other way w/ the pitches away. Apart from playing RF on occasion, I’m pretty sure Jones doesn’t know of the existence of that half of the field.

  50. Chilango says:

Price is not sharp. No command.

  51. Kramerica Industries says:

    How slow is Andruw?

  52. EDDARD says:

Jones made a productive out, that’s something.

  53. Chilango says:

best you could expect from Jones. We’ll take it.

  54. The Real Greg says:

Not a K, which is what I thought would happen.

  55. Kramerica Industries says:

    Pearce is fearce.

  56. jjyank says:

    Sam Muthafuckin’ Pearce.

  57. The Real Greg says:

    Casey who?

  58. Get Phelps Up says:

    Sam Pearce making things happen!

  59. Karl Krawfid says:

    Woo pearce.

  60. Cy Pettitte says:

Steve Pearce: avid RAB reader/podcast listener

  61. Wait…Steve Pearce got a hit off of Price. For shame Andruw.

  62. WhittakerWalt says:

I’m sorry I made fun of you, Steve Pearce.

  63. EDDARD says:

That’s why he’s in the lineup! Who has the only hits with RISP in the past 4 games? The Captain and Steve Pearce.

  64. Nice Scheister says:

    SAM PEARCE!!!!!

  65. The Real Greg says:

Also wonder if Price is on a pitch count

    • Mikhel says:

At some point today in one of the MLB Network’s shows it was mentioned that it could be 75 pitches, 65 for Andy next tuesday, but they later said they were not sure if Price has a limit for today.

  66. Kramerica Industries says:

What inning does Sabathia surrender this lead?

  67. Note to Nunez: Just because people hit the ball at you and get on base because of it doesn’t mean that’ll work for you.

    • jjyank says:

      Hahaha that’s awesome.

    • Kramerica Industries says:

I’m pretty sure that kind of stuff is a fireable offense.

I remember reading it is between Coke and Pepsi products.

      • Really? I’d be really upset if the person responsible got fired for that. I mean I found it on Tumblr, and it had already been reblogged over 8,000 times. That means 8000 people have had it on their blog, plus all the people that just saw it, plus all the people that follow Phil, plus the people that follow Dominoes, and all the people that retweeted? And just about all of them probably at least chuckled weakly.

      • jjyank says:

I don’t see why. If the guy didn’t use the word “cheating”, it wouldn’t have happened. It’s not like the guy on twitter for Dominos went out of the way to trash another company.

        • Kramerica Industries says:

I’m not saying this guy certainly got fired. I dunno – I can’t read sarcasm that well in this kind of circumstance.

I do know that it can happen with Pepsi and Coke, though. I forget which one holds that policy, or if both do, but the logic is that you’re directly supporting enemy competition. And it’s kinda stupid to put that out there for everyone to see on the internet.

          • Mikhel says:

The “Dominoes” account in that tweet was a fake Dominos Pizza account, it is common in twitter to see fake accounts made by people to make fun of themselves and later blog said screenshot.

  68. RkyMtnYank says:

Wow, saw Pearce taking his helmet off and for a second I flashed back to Jim Leyritz. Guess that could be good or bad.

  69. NYCSPORTZFAN says:

i love ur stuff Mike, but i remember asking u about Steve Pearce whehe was in our farm system if there was any chance he’d help the big club or was just a former solid prospect that is minor league fodder, and u said Fodder.. Hes been a helpful piece for us..

    • jjyank says:

No, he is fodder. I will list his MLB wRC+’s for you.

      2012: 91 in 181 PA
      2011: 42 in 105 PA
      2010: 120 in only 38 PA
      2009: 78 in 186 PA
      2008: 87 in 119 PA

And so forth. He’s too old to be a prospect and has a career wRC+ of 81 and an even .300 wOBA. A couple of RISP hits for us now does not mean Mike was wrong to call him fodder back in April.

  70. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

  71. Karl Krawfid says:

    JEter doesn’t get that.

  72. Chilango says:

    Noonie comes up strong. Nice

  73. Kramerica Industries says:

Nunez is much better on those kind of plays because there’s no thinking time involved. Not calling him a head case, but it’s just natural that having extra time to make the throw sometimes causes poor mechanics and, subsequently, poor throws.

  74. Kramerica Industries says:

    Exhibit B.

  75. Cy Pettitte says:

Nunie looking very good at short. impressive.

  76. The Real Greg says:

    Twice in a row!

  77. Karl Krawfid says:

    Woo Nunee

  78. Cuso says:

  79. jjyank says:

Okay. Who the fuck are you, and what did you do with Eduardo Nunez?

    • Cuso says:

Me & him rubbed the Fred Savage/Judge Reinhold lamp (or Dudley Moore/Kirk Cameron lamp if you choose).

In any event, we switched bodies for the month.

  80. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

I’m not sure Jeter makes either one of those plays.

  81. EDDARD says:

I think we have our future SS right here! Nunie!

  82. Nice Scheister says:

it’s Nunes’ time to shine baby!!!

  83. The Real Greg says:

Also, it seems that CC’s has started to use his location to counteract his lesser stuff.

  84. Electric nunez says:

    Who has a stronger arm
    Nunez or Cano ?

  85. Cuso says:

Before the 2nd play I was in the middle of posting: “it wasn’t the fact that Steve Pearce actually got a RISP hit that brought me back, it was that play from.Nunez.”

And then he made a second one!

  86. Nice Scheister says:

That’s the Jeter that I used to know!

  87. Chilango says:

    Swisher missed a cookie.

  88. Athenian says:

It still early but I like the return of Nunez. Although he better be careful. Being young and playing well with the Yankees gets you traded for old people… #seniormovement

  89. Nice Scheister says:

CY Young should go to Felix
MVP should go to Jeter, only to Trout if Yanks miss playoffs or Halos get in.
    ROY goes to Trout

  90. Karl Krawfid says:

    F-Bomb baby

  91. jjyank says:

Hahaha who else heard Upton yell “Aww, FUCK!” After he had that?

  92. The Real Greg says:

Can we get Aaron Laffey for next year. He has owned the Red Sox this year.

  93. Hahahahhaha Dice-K is awful: the first two runs that scored against him Walk, Walk, HBP, Wild Pitch, Wild Pitch.

  94. Nice Scheister says:

The ball boy! Better than Andruw.

  95. Chilango says:

    CC helps himself. Well done.

  96. Nice Scheister says:

Maybe that will wake up the sleeping giant.

    • How more awake can he be than a 1 hitter over 4?

      • Nice Scheister says:

I meant mostly in the way of velocity. Or as the young folks call it, V-Lo.

        • V-Lo isn’t nearly as important to me as command/control. Look at Joba, he came back throwing straight heat. Problem was it was either not a strike or right down the middle. Same thing w/ Nova for most of the year: his V-Lo was great, but it was over the middle of the plate. I’d much rather CC be hitting corners at 91-93 than leak up and over the middle at 94 or 95.

          • jjyank says:

Unless you’re throwing like 98+, I’ve always considered it kind of overrated. Just about any MLB hitter and tattoo a 95 mph fastball if the location isn’t good. Obviously 95 is more effective than 91 in the exact same location, but yeah, command is more important to me.

          • Nice Scheister says:

Agreed but he’s been off in location and v-lo. I’d prefer location to the v-lo, if I had to choose one (of course) but he just hasn’t looked like the big man we all know and love. I just named my third son after the man! I love me some CC, but he’s looked more like Phil Hughes than the CC that we used to know. I want the best of both worlds from the big man! I’m convinced he’ll get back in another groove before the post season.

  97. WhittakerWalt says:

    OK CC, there’s your run.

  98. Tom says:

    Good work by CC.

Even with that long AB, he’s gotten his pitch count back on track over the last 2 innings (61 pitches through 4)

  99. Nice Scheister says:

Seriosully though, has Meals admitted he missed that call? If not, why the fuck is he umping such an important game?!

    • Pat D says:

Of course not, and because there’s no accountability for umpires.

    • jjyank says:

If they won’t get fired, they should at least be banished to Astros games for a few weeks or something.

    • Because the Umpire Union is way to strong, and has no checks and balances for it’s members. Jim Joyce cost a pitcher a perfect game and is still an Umpire. He also still looks like a Walrus.

      • Kramerica Industries says:

Jim Joyce is widely regarded as one of the best umps in baseball. It’s a little different.

        • jjyank says:

And Joyce at least owned up to it. His comments after the game made it seem that he was genuinely sorry. If players get railed for ditching the media for blowing a game, I’d like to see umpires get the same treatment. I respect Joyce for at least talking to reporters and taking responsibility for his blown call.

  100. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Andruw Jones: Not very good at baseball anymore.

  101. WhittakerWalt says:

Future Hall of Famer Andruw Jones, everyone.

  102. jjyank says:

You know, I’ve never been a Burger King fan, but those popcorn chicken commercials are making me REALLY hungry.

  103. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Sucked that it happened, but it made for a great headline.

  104. Karl Krawfid says:

    That Shallow? Jesus.

  105. Kramerica Industries says:

This Chris Gimenez shit needs to stop.

  106. The Real Greg says:

    That’s good hitting for a .216 hitter

  107. WhittakerWalt says:

    Fucking Chris Giminez.

  108. Darren says:

Appropos of nothing, I miss watching Mariano pitch. His control is so awesome. I really hope he comes back next year stonger than ever.

Ok, back to our regularlyt schedulked programming. CC looks cooked. This could be the end of his career. He’s going to have a Baerga like drop off a cliff.

  109. EDDARD says:

Coney says the job of the starter at this time of the year is just to win whether it’s 4-3 or 1-0. CC has been given the lead and needs to hold it like Phil and Phelps did. Find a way out of this.

  110. Remember, the Yankees love having DEFENSE FIRST catchers.

  111. The Real Greg says:

Scored a wild pitch by the way

  112. Kramerica Industries says:

Sabathia is going to a ton of 3-2 counts, especially after being up in the count.

  113. Chilango says:

Gimenez fcking Gimenez doesn’t miss a mistake, but Robbie misses two.

  114. EDDARD says:

Move your body in front of it, Russell. Another defensive mishap and Nunez has been perfect tonight.

  115. Kramerica Industries says:

There were a ton of these 0-2, 1-2 to walk PA’s two weeks ago.

    More of the same there.

  116. The Real Greg says:

Ump squeezed CC on that at bat.

  117. Electric nunez says:

How many runs has martin cost us this year
Fucking posada last year was a better catcher than these two wads

  118. WhittakerWalt says:

    This is not good.

  119. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Step it up CC.

  120. Cy Pettitte says:

getting shit on by the 7-8-9 hitters. nice.

  121. Kramerica Industries says:

And with that, the lead disappears.

And Sabathia is still in as shitload of trouble.

  122. Karl Krawfid says:

Yall really thought this was gonna be a 1-0 win for the Yanks?

  123. your mom says:

Great CC! 7-8-9 hitters getting on board and doing damage.

  124. EDDARD says:

    Great pitch there, ace.

  125. Chilango says:

Bottom of the order just like that. Fuck me.

  126. The Real Greg says:

You all should not be surprised. This is what the Rays do.

  127. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

  128. Pat D says:

    Le sigh x 2.

  129. The Real Greg says:

Another bad luck hit against CC.

  130. I cannot believe how many runs our “defensive” catchers have cost us this season. Also CC SETTLE THE FUCK DOWN!!!

  131. EDDARD says:

Andruw Jones could have hit that pitch Johnson hit.

  132. Kramerica Industries says:

And then the requisite chickenshit hit, to boot.

  133. Nice Scheister says:

Hughes > CC over the past several starts. It hurts my heart, I’m renaming my three week old from CC to Phillip.

  134. The Real Greg says:

Cant blame CC for that hit.

  135. your mom says:

Seriously, Fuck CC already. Ace my ass.

  136. Electric nunez says:

    Martins run
Russel go play for houston next year

  137. EDDARD says:

Dave Phelps did it, Phil did it, why can’t CC hold any leads? He’s supposed to be the ace.

  138. Athenian says:

    Good to have CC back.

  139. Daiello18 says:

And this is our Ace…… Fuck.

  140. WhittakerWalt says:

    CC. You fucking fuck.

  141. Karl Krawfid says:

Just come out and say that CC is hurt Jesus Christ.

  142. Captain Gift Basket says:

Typical Yankee baseball. Double by a guy hitting .225, followed by a walk to another hitting .192, with a run knocked in by the .240 guy. Chalk up another brilliant scouting report by the Yanks.

  143. Darren says:

So, does CC make the playoff roster, assuming we hang on and make it? I say no.

    Phelps if needed

  144. The Real Greg says:

No hating on CC. No hating period

  145. Electric nunez says:

Cc shitting the bed not worth new contract

  146. BigBlueAL says:

What has the world come to when I have more faith in Hughes than CC.

  147. Athenian says:

CC wil give up one more run and Yanks will fail to come back. Well done boys.

  148. The Real Greg says:

  149. Leg-End says:

That’s what the 7th lead hes given up in his last 5 starts?

  150. Chilango says:

CC is injured. There is no other explanation.

  151. The Real Greg says:

And all the sudden, this has become an bearable place to be.

All of you give yourself a round of applause.

  152. Karl Krawfid says:

Rays have a better approach against CC.

Yankees have the same approach against every pitcher.

  153. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Russell Martin: Great fucking game.

  154. Kramerica Industries says:

How many balls are getting to the backstop tonight?

    Fucking ridiculous.

  155. EDDARD says:

    LOL! Put Stewart in already.

  156. Kramerica Industries says:

Meanwhile, another 0-2 to 3-2 count.

    • Tom says:

      That’s really the aggravating part.

      Giminez 1-2 (double)
      Pena 1-2 (walk)
      Johnson 0-1 (sharp single)
      Jenning 1-0 (weakish single)
      Zobrist 0-2 (walk)

He’s been ahead of everyone but Jennings, including 3 of 5 hitters in put away counts and inexplicably everyone has reached base.

  157. Athenian says:

CC is done. Fire up the pen.

  158. Jesus Christ. If we lose this game blame goes in this order:
    1. Martin
    2. CC

    Nobody else.

    • Pat D says:

If they only score 1 run, I’m gonna blame most of the guys in the lineup. I don’t care if it’s Price on the mound.

      • You have to take that into account. If you’re ace is on the mound and you know you’re facing a guy who’s a Cy Young favorite, you gotta come up strong on pitching and defense. CC hasn’t come up big tonight. Martin, who we’re putting up with his .200AVG because he’s a defensive catcher, has made Mike Napoli look like Johnny Bench tonight.

  159. Karl Krawfid says:

And Martin must have drove to Canada and started drinking yesterday.

  160. Cy Pettitte says:

time to hand in your ace card CC.

  161. WhittakerWalt says:

    Is Russell Martin drunk???

  162. Electric nunez says:

Put fucking cervelli in the game

  163. Nice Scheister says:

Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle says:
    September 14, 2012 at 8:35 pm
I cannot believe how many runs our “defensive” catchers have cost us this season. Also CC SETTLE THE FUCK DOWN!!!

    Repeated for emphasis!

  164. jjyank says:

Hm. Guess my next drink needs to be stronger.

  165. Captain Gift Basket says:

    CC channeling his inner AJ

  166. Karl Krawfid says:

Take him out now please please.

  167. Kramerica Industries says:

    And the 0-2 walk.

Just hit a grand slam and put him out of his misery, Longo.

  168. Widget says:

Good thing the Yankees have a well rested bullpen. Oh right they don’t.

  169. EDDARD says:

Of all the contenders we no doubt have the worst ace. We’ve been waiting start after start for CC to win a big game for us and he just can’t do it. He’s been given lead after lead and has blown it every time.

  170. CC’s thrown nearly 30 pitches this inning and hasn’t gotten an out yet.

  171. your mom says:

Take this piece of shit out already. Freddy or Lowe could do this shitless of a job.

  172. Nice Scheister says:

    Take out CC.

  173. JonS says:

    Pull his ass Girardi.

  174. Leg-End says:

Somebody go talk to him atleast for christ sake.

  175. Electric nunez says:

    Bring in eppley

  176. Athenian says:

That’s it. Game is over. Say hello to second place and say good bye to playoffs by Monday. Yankees =2011 Red Sox…old, lazy choke

  177. Pat D says:

Huh. Why didn’t ARod step on third and come home?

  178. Kramerica Industries says:

Thanks to Sabathia’s incompetence, though, that’s another costly run to allow.

  179. I’m listening on the radio, why didn’t Alex come home after stepping on the bag?

  180. jjyank says:

Alright…down 2 runs, but that could very well be it. Still very winnable.

  181. your mom says:

Of course he gets their best hitter to GIDP. WTF?

  182. Kramerica Industries says:

Sabathia has surrendered the last six leads he has been given, and four times he has put the Yankees in a deficit.

    Not good.

  183. Chilango says:

All things considered not to bad. But we had our shots at Price early-sound familiar?- and now he’s settled down. 3 runs may be too many.

  184. Get Phelps Up says:

Ugly inning overall, but CC deserves lots of credit for getting the Rays 2 best hitters to make 3 outs on 2 pitches.

  185. Electric nunez says:

Pull out the battery girardi grow some nads piss off both of them maybe they play better

  186. The Yankees will put the tying run on base this game. Whether it scores or not is a different story.

  187. your mom says:

Okay David, can you shit the bed like CC too?

  188. If he wasn’t hitting 5th and the other options where Stewart and Cervelli I’d absolutely pull Martin from this game.

  189. Kramerica Industries says:

Good job knocking that ball over the wall, Upton.

  190. Get Phelps Up says:

  191. jjyank says:

    GRANDY! One run game.

  192. JonS says:

All that said, the Yankees will still win this game 5-4 despite CC sucking ass as usual.

  193. EDDARD says:

  194. Pat D says:

    Wow, right over his glove.

  195. WhittakerWalt says:

    Thank you, Curtis. That helps.

  196. Chilango says:

Feast or famine Grandy steps up!

  197. Kramerica Industries says:

I’m pretty sure Granderson has all three HR that Price has surrendered to LHB.

  198. JonS says:

Price and Upton. Future Yankees. lol

  199. Repeating this down here because Curtis cut into our angry time: If the BUC’s weren’t Cervelli and Stewart, and he wasn’t batting behind Cano I’d definitely pull Martin from this game, apparently his head isn’t in it defensively.

  200. Pat D says:

    Fuck you, Jerry Meals.

  201. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    Fuck Jerry Meals.

  202. Kramerica Industries says:

Jerry Meals screws the Yankees again.

  203. Cy Pettitte says:

fuck you Jerry Meals. fuck you so much.

  204. FIPster Doofus says:

All Jerry Meals does is take.

  205. EDDARD says:

  206. jjyank says:

Wait…hitting an umpire like that isn’t a ground rule double? That is a double easily! That’s some bullshit right there.

  207. Jerry Meals’ hatred of the Yankees knows no limits.

  208. xnyles says:

    WHAT THE HELL MAN!!!!!!!!!

  209. Chilango says:

    Fucking Meals

  210. Leg-End says:

No way! Just had to be him.

  211. JonS says:

Too bad it didn’t tear his knee up. F’n Jerry.

  212. WhittakerWalt says:

Couldn’t you have killed Meals while you were at it?

  213. Get Phelps Up says:

I hope repercussions from that will force Meals to miss the rest of the series.

  214. Hall and Nokes says:

Not hitting Meals in the nuts=FAIL

  215. Nice Scheister says:

FUCK JERRY MEALS!!! When’s the last time we’ve seen an ump hit by a ball in play…FUCK!!

  216. Electric nunez says:

Send nunez to the fall league to learn RF ditch swisher for nunie

  217. JonS says:

It’s amazing what having a threat on the bases can do. Kinda miss that with the old folk going station to station.

  218. Kramerica Industries says:

    WTF is Price doing?

  219. Get Phelps Up says:

    David Beckett on the mound.

  220. Kramerica Industries says:

    Well, more RISPY chances.

  221. Pat D says:

    11th place, according to BRef.

  222. Remember guys: CC’s not an Ace, Price is just having an off night.

  223. EDDARD says:

#2 AND #3 HITTERS. Get the runs in, no excuses.

  224. Laz says:

Does the 3B ump really need to stand in fair ground?
You can see if it hits the line from foul territory.

  225. Kramerica Industries says:

    Atta boy Nick.

    Quick and painlessful out.

  226. Cuso says:

Fallacy of the pre-determined Jerry Meals. Should be 3-3.

  227. Karl Krawfid says:

    An A-Bomb would be amazing.

  228. Leg-End says:

This game is tied if its not for Jerry Meals.

  229. Kramerica Industries says:

    Johnson you motherfucker.

  230. Karl Krawfid says:

    God damn what a play.

  231. Wow. Are you fucking kidding me? Can we get like a single break against this god damned team?!

  232. The Real Greg says:

That’s the year its been for the Yankees. The Rays squibblers find holes, the Yankees’ don’t

Bad luck all the way round

    • Tom says:

Please stop with this luck shit.Saying it over and over doesn’t make it make more sense.

It’s just confirmation bias and a need to rationalize negative outcomes.

      • The Real Greg says:

This game is mostly luck. How can a team like the Cardinals last year win the World Series without luck.

The nature of the game is luck. Hitting a ball thrown at top speed with a wooden stick and hitting it so that nobody can get it.

You need to fact facts. Luck is a HUGE factor in this game (in general)

    • Chilango says:

What a stupid comment. Seriously. CC got hit hard. He has been shaky since the All-Star break. Nuñez made a couple of really good plays to retire Rays hitters. The Yankee RISPFAIL is not due to luck. Suck it up dude.

  233. Moskva says:

Time to get our RISP-fail going!

  234. Athenian says:

    Great inning. Fucking waste

  235. CountryClub says:

So sick of seeing avg and below avg players on the O’s and rays make plays that cost the Yanks runs.

  236. jjyank says:

Highlight of the game so far: Nunez has yet to fuck up.

    Bravo, sir.

  237. jjyank says:

Cone (on Pettitte’s PFP drills): Oh that’s a good idea, fire some fungos back at that shin!

He was kidding, but I found it funny. Love Coney in the booth.

  238. adjusts batting gloves says:

Does the RAB community think that K-Long will be made to walk the plank over this year’s RISP fail? I’m not in favor of firing coaches for the sake of firing them, usually, but, even with bad luck factored in, the Yankees now just seem psyched out at the plate in those situations. What began as statistical anomaly has become self-fulfilling prophecy. It doesn’t really matter how good the hitting coach is with offseason cage workouts and in-season stance adjustments (though Granderson’s regression is also troubling); part of the job has to be motivational.

    • RkyMtnYank says:

He probably will if they don’t make the playoffs but it would be completely irrelevant. If any player at the ML level has to rely on a coach to that level then they should not be in the majors.

    • Laz says:

I doubt it. RISP fail is really not the coach’s fault. Their overall hitting has been good enough that I think he could keep it.

    • Nice Scheister says:

The hitting coach needs to take some semblance of responsibility for the lackluster job the Yanks have done with RISP. There’s one player above .300 in BA, the OBP is okay but that should be expected with the payroll the Yanks have and all the professional hitters they employ. Without looking I’d guess the teams that hit for a higher average also hit with a higher average with RISP. Everytime someone makes a point on here about BA it’s made out to be a useless stat and OBP is sited instead. A walk typically doesn’t get the guy in from second or third (unless their loaded), a base hit does. So let’s see some BA skill with runners on.

  239. Chilango says:

Hey Greg the Rays just got unlucky! ARod threw out Gimenez on a close play.

  240. Tabbert says:

I love how people blame ” bad luck” on us not scoring runs. Arod hit a ball in the INFIELD with RISP. Yes.. there was a nice play at second, but it was nothing masterful. Maybe next time Alex can drive something? You know if you HIT A HOMER they cant make great defensive plays.

  241. Bus time, good luck the rest of the way boys.

  242. Kramerica Industries says:

    Really solid inning offensively there.

As the game starts to get closer and closer to Rodney territory.

  243. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Andruw – there’s a pasture with your name on it.

  244. Kramerica Industries says:

Sabathia is terrible at getting to first.

  245. EDDARD says:

Get your ass over there and cover the bag, CC. Jesus.

  246. Pat D says:

    Fuckin’ Pena.

Remember, Pena is one of the reasons that ARod signed with Texas.

  247. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

They just find all kinds of new ways to fuck things up.

  248. Stratman9652 says:

Not the person I would wanna get run over by.

  249. Electric nunez says:

At this point jones should sit rather see mcgehee up there swinging

  250. Chilango says:

Small ball. See how it’s done Joe?

  251. Cy Pettitte says:

why is this turd still in giving up runs?

  252. Kramerica Industries says:

    Shitty two-out pitching.

    Way to go, ace.

  253. EDDARD says:

And he already gave up the run we got him. Atrocious.

  254. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

CC sucks now. That’s gonna make it real difficult to win the division (or do anything in the playoffs).

    • Laz says:

Just hope we don’t have the wildcard. No one I really want to run out there in a 1 game playoff. 5 game series we might sneak a few.

  255. Electric nunez says:

Why is sabathia still out there

  256. JonS says:

    Too late Girardi. Idiot.

I still say they win 5-4 despite CC.

  257. EDDARD says:

Nunez would not steal that bag vs Price, Johnson did and he scored. That’s the difference in the ballgame. Be aggressive, it wins ballgames.

  258. Karl Krawfid says:

    This sucks.

  259. CountryClub says:

Man, the Yanks are one frustrating fucking team this yr.

  260. Electric nunez says:

    Hes hurt
We will see an elbow or shoulder soon

    • Eric in Town says:

I have to agree, his has no velocity or control. I think it was Mike who said that may be a result of an elbow problem (or shoulder I forget which he mentioned). Either way, without him 100% no chance we take a deep run into October – if at all at this rate.

    • Nice Scheister says:

After the post-season we’ll hear something but they’ll keep running him out there and let him continue his 2010 Phil Hughes impression and pretend he hurt himself in the post-season.

  261. Eric in Town says:

CC has pitched like garbage the last few weeks (months?). I hope he’s not hurt, but what else could it be? Fatigue? Yeesh.

  262. TrueBlue says:

Needed an Ace outing… Didn’t get it.

  263. Kramerica Industries says:

Another start, another blown lead, and another underwhelming start by the $23M “ace”.

    C.C. Sabathia, ladies and gentlemen.

  264. JonS says:

True. 3 strike outs against the Rays. Is that Luck too?

  265. Electric nunez says:

Give your paycheck this week to charity CC you didnt earn it.

  266. Hall and Nokes says:

Yanks may be dropping a game to the entire AL field tonight, except the loser of BAL-OAK. Though you never know, both of those teams are gritty enough to win the same game.

  267. Chilango says:

Just the same script. We could have got to Price early but did not. Then he settled down and our guy gave up the lead etc etc fuck this team.

  268. JonS says:

So who’s going to be the writer to defend CC and say he battled through and kept his team in the game.

The same crap you expect to say for Freddy or Phelps, not your $23m+ supposed “ace”.

  269. Kramerica Industries says:

Two more innings to turn around this abomination.

  270. Effthisnoise says:

Love the fact that the rays looked dead against Baltimore but CC and the yanks have made then feel right at home in the bronx

  271. Karl Krawfid says:

Remember when the Yankees hit off speed pitches?

  272. Frank says:

You can put a bow on this game boys and girls. There’s always tomorrow.

  273. EDDARD says:

And the biggest game of the year now rests on the right arm of Ivan Nova. If we lose that game the Rays are right back in it and we might be 2 games back for the division. In games where we really need a W our ace just cannot be counted on.

  274. jjyank says:

Off topic, but anyone else run into a situation where you didn’t think you needed to shave in the morning, then all of a sudden at like 9 PM at night the itchiness just ambushes you like it’s no tomorrow? Man. Had to watch the last inning in between razor strokes.

  275. JonS says:

    This is just comical now.

  276. Cy Pettitte says:

    nice 0-2 pitch.

  277. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

It would be nice if Girardi would realize Eppley sucks now.

  278. Pat D says:

    I’m afraid that’s game.

  279. Kramerica Industries says:

And the ROOGY surrenders the requisite Upton home run.

Fuck everything. Big time game in a big time series, and the Yankees open with a dud. What a fucking shock.

  280. Karl Krawfid says:

    Ball game.

  281. Frank says:

    What a terrible 0-2 pitch.

  282. Chilango says:

Serious rebuilding is in order in the off-season. We’re stuck with ARod and his PED-ridden crumbling body, and Tex, whose GG doesn’t compensate the tumbling offensive numbers. But Granderson, Swisher and the platoon buffoons need to go.

    • JonS says:

I think everyone would agree but those who make the decisions.

For some reason, only the Yankees think that they can beat father time.

  283. JonS says:

    So…If Yanks miss playoffs.

Girardi Fired (goes to Chicago where he actually fits)
    Yankees hire…Terry Francona.

  284. Cuso says:

    tack-on baseball.

    wish we played that

  285. Karl Krawfid says:

You guys have been expecting something different to happen every night.

This is who the Yankees are.

A team that pitches poorly and can’t come through in the clutch.

  286. Chilango says:

6 runs off he O’s in the whole series. 5 off us in 8 innings. And what is Eppley doing pitching at all? I’d rather see Swisher in there, then we could pinch hit for him in the 8th.

  287. Tom says:

I think Wade must have been in the car with McGehee when they ran over Girardi’s dog.

Eppley is cooked, and has been for a while. Wade may not be a great option, but at this point I think he needs to be higher on the bullpen totem pole than Eppley. This is was a 2 run game – why not Joba or Wade?

  288. Kramerica Industries says:

Keep giving up doubles to Chris Gimenez, guys.

    • Tom says:

The average right hander against Clay Rapada (career #’s):

(yes the average right hander against Rapada has a 1.053 OPS)

Sure it was Gimenez, but that’s what happens when Rapada faces a righty. With Pena on deck and 2 out the only real bad outcome would have been a HR (or the LOOGY doing non-LOOGY things against Pena when the righty inevitably gets on base). Given the bullpen that seems like a reasonable decision by Girardi (Eppley on the other hand…)

  289. JonS says:

Oh now he starts to warm up Wade.

  290. Cy Pettitte says:

Chris fucking Giminez has 2 doubles tonight. I don’t understand how the O’s allow 6 runs over 3 games and we allow 5 in less than one game with our ace on the mound.

  291. Nice Scheister says:

    Fuck this umpire crew.

  292. JonS says:

Sabathia should be a candiate for player of the game.

  293. Kramerica Industries says:

The Orioles have held the Rays to 0-2 runs the last seven times they’ve faced.

Yankees have held them to 0-2 runs, what, twice this year, at best?

    That’s sickening.

    • Chilango says:

This team is just plain bad. I suppose they could make a run if they get into the playoffs but it doesn’t seem likely they could turn it around that fast, given their inherent weaknesses.

  294. Nice Scheister says:

With Meals and his crew on the job, I’m pretty sure any close calls in this soon to be comeback will be in favor of the Rays.

  295. JonS says:

Holy shit. The only team to not win a game after losing in the 8th inning. 0-53.

  296. Cy Pettitte says:

why can’t we just have 9 Jeters?

  297. Kramerica Industries says:

    And now the teases begin.

  298. JonS says:

    Michael Kay telling the truth.

  299. Tom says:

    Ain’t over yet,

Though that last tack on run that pushed the lead from 2 to 3 runs is rough.

  300. Kramerica Industries says:

    Swisher’s making progress.

Not K’ing every AB, just getting under every pitch now.

  301. Cy Pettitte says:

2 fastballs down the middle and he can’t do anything with them.

  302. Karl Krawfid says:

Swish just popped up 91 down the middle in a 2-1 count.

    This is Yankee baseball.

  303. Cuso says:

Because Swisher can’t take short base-hit type strokes. He’s always gotta take a long looping hero-swing

    fuckin jerk-off

  304. Kramerica Industries says:

    Well, thanks Eppley.

  305. Cy Pettitte says:

    ABOMB! monster shot.

  306. Karl Krawfid says:

    A-Rod does the fucking job.

    Hell yeah.

  307. RkyMtnYank says:

    Rally killer

  308. Chilango says:

    The dick tease has begun.

  309. JonS says:

    Damn, that’s a blast.

  310. Widget says:

Please come back and win this game. Please. A-Rod!!!!!!!!!!!

  311. Anthony says:

    Nice Alex….lets tie it up!

  312. Nice Scheister says:

Meals just called it a foul ball.

  313. Got home right in time for the A-Bomb :)

  314. WhittakerWalt says:

Why, oh why couldn’t they have not allowed the tack-on run?

  315. Kramerica Industries says:

    Tying run on base now.

This tease is gonna kill me.

  316. Anthony says:

    Ugh I hate this man

  317. Chilango says:

Nice AB Robbie. Whatever happens we make Rodney throw 4 outs.

  318. jjyank, you still around? If so when John asked if I was Barry when I said “I don’t care that you’re Archer I’ll kill you” he was referring to Barry, formally of ODIN, turned cyborg assassin by the KGB, now leader of the KGB.

  319. DT says:

Why the fuck don’t you pinch hit for Russell Martin

  320. Tom says:

The troubling aspect of this move is with his changeup, I’m not sure it makes sense to put lefty PH’s in.

  321. Great AB there Martin…also awesome job by Girardi not pinch-hitting there.

  322. Kramerica Industries says:

Would be nice to see Ibanez do something here.

  323. Kramerica Industries says:

Well, now it’s up to Granderson.

  324. Cy Pettitte says:

at the very least they’re making him throw some pitches

  325. Kramerica Industries says:

    Way to go Curtis.

    First pitch. Jesus.

  326. Grandy: it’s key to have a huge AB here. You don’t have to score, hell you can make out, just make this guy throw as many pitches as possi…or ground out on the first fucking pitch. Good job there buddy.

  327. Chilango says:

    KKurtis please make contact.

  328. swishers fauxhawk says:

    four pitch walk

    first pitch swing

  329. Pat D says:

Curtis swings at the first pitch after a four pitch walk.

    Curtis giveth, Curtis taketh.

  330. DT says:

Should have pinched hit Chavez for Martin. Martin could not have put up a more worthless AB…Fucken Girardi.

  331. ArchStanton says:

So sick of this team swinging on the first pitch after 4-pitch walks. I know what they’re thinking, but it never seems to work.

  332. Daiello18 says:

Sure 4 pitch walk and he swings at the first pitch… Nice plate discipline…. Great job curtis… Unreal with this team. Little league players know to take 1 after a 4 pitch walk…

  333. Nice Scheister says:

Curtis, take a pitch. That .234 BA is pretty unsightly.

  334. Billy says:

Guy just walked a batter ahead of you on 4 pitches?

What do you do on your first pitch?

    Fuck you Kurtis.

  335. Captain Gift Basket says:

Yanks must be big RAB fans – they know RBIs are way overrated, too.

  336. Athenian says:

If Granderson isnt hitting home runs, he is useless at the plate. Good Job Grandy!

  337. Kramerica Industries says:

    Pearce-Nunez-Jeter due up.

I imagine Pearce will be PH for. But it’s not much prettier.

  338. Rocky Road Redemption says:

This fucking sucks (and I was about to post this before the Grandy AB pitch). Why? Because I simply CAN’T make myself believe they’ll come back. I don’t think they could do it. But they’re making it just close enough that I can’t stop watching and I’ll be twice as fucking frustrated when they lose.

    FUCK. I hope they win.

    • Kramerica Industries says:

I didn’t bat an eye on the ARod home run.

It’s bad enough watching the Yankees play like shit. It’s bad enough watching them play like shit. And it’s even worse seeing them play like shit and having no choice to listen to the Rays announcers through this.

I’ll get excited if they tie or take the lead. I’m far too cynical in this team by this point to think they can actually make it happen. Once again, we’re seeing them only capable of scoring on home runs. RISP chances be damned.

  339. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

I don’t mind swinging at the first pitch there, but if you’re going to swing, make sure the pitch is a fastball right down the fucking middle, not a borderline pitch.

  340. teddy says:

rays have more heart and character than nyy and their manager plays to win

  341. RkyMtnYank says:

Why did we not see Joba instead of Epply, ugh!

  342. Captain Gift Basket says:

Here comes the stolen base and Zobrist single…

  343. Chilango says:

Why was Eppley in there at all? There is absolutely no reason to trot him out there in a reasonably close game. Only Girardi’s binder knows for sure.

  344. WhittakerWalt says:

This has not been the best game of Russell Martin’s career.

  345. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Russ is having a stellar defensive game.

  346. Cy Pettitte says:

worst possible time and NunE strikes.

  347. Kramerica Industries says:

Nunez strikes at the worst possible time.

  348. Pat D says:

    jjyank, I’m-a kill you.

  349. Karl Krawfid says:

    Oh my fucking god.

  350. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

    And there is NunEEE.

  351. ………………….are you fucking kidding me?! of all fucking times NUNIE come the fuck on!!!!!!!!

  352. Chilango says:

    Stonehands Nuñez. ARGHHH

  353. WhittakerWalt says:

    Ahh, there’s Nunez.
Just when this game felt within reach.

  354. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

His defensive incompetence on routine plays is astounding.

  355. Kramerica Industries says:

Amazing how many runs the Rays score off this team when they steal with two outs in the inning.

  356. Knoxvillain says:

Please die, Nunez. Make me happy. Just die.

  357. Widget says:

And finally the Real Nunez shows up.

  358. bring buck back says:

I quote myself, at 6:38 pm:

    “Nunez, SS makes me wince.”

  359. Effthisnoise says:

    Of fucking course

  360. Nice Scheister says:

LMFAO! Goodnight folks, I’ve had enough for tonight.

  361. Is Russ going to make an average defensive play tonight?

  362. Athenian says:

    Awesome. Such a joke!

  363. Pat D says:

Nunez attended the Davey Lopes School of Defense. Which has for years doubled as a matador school.

  364. Karl Krawfid says:

How hard is it to get in front of that ball really?

  365. Rocky Road Redemption says:

I have to hand it to Nunez. Somehow, some way, against all odds, he managed to have a bad defensive game-context wise his worst ever. That fact that he managed this after making two great plays earlier is incredibly impressive.

I tip my cap to Nunez. He never ceases to amaze me.

  366. ArchStanton says:

From what I understand Nunez did not show improvement on defense in AAA, so why is he in the field again?

    • WhittakerWalt says:

Because RAB commenters have been dying to get his bat and energy into the lineup. Somehow, they believed if they wished hard enough his defense would be improved.

  367. BigBlueAL says:

Bad luck on that Nunez error.

  368. Karl Krawfid says:

If the Yanks score ima cry.

  369. Electric nunez says:

Time for thought that nunie not an infielder but needs to play outfield

  370. Reggie C. says:

Pearce will somehow get on base and Nunez will redeem himself with a two run shot.

  371. Effthisnoise says:

Yankee stadium, where other teams Come to feel better about themselves

  372. DT says:

Remember last year and Nunez literally threw away like 2 games?

  373. Need Pitching & Hitting says:

Maybe Nunez as a 5th OF/pinch runner next year.

Other than that, I don’t see how he could have any substantial role on this team.

  374. teddy says:

giradri and cashman should be fired

  375. Down 2? Let’s bat the guy who is second to only Chris Stewart in worst offensive player to lead off.

  376. Pat D says:

    Joba should have killed Nunez.

  377. Karl Krawfid says:

Only team that hasn’t won a game trailing after 8.

  378. Chilango says:

OK Nuñez fucked up. But the Rays actually have guys who bunt, run and press the defense. Hats off to ‘em. Maybe the Yankee FO will wake the fuck up in the off season and make some real changes.

  379. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Are we out of first place then?

  380. Kramerica Industries says:

This team does not cease to fail with their incompetence.

  381. teddy says:

    this team is gutless

  382. Defensive Indifference says:

  383. Just a baseball game. Just a loss. Comeback tomorrow, and win.

  384. Kramerica Industries says:

Rays get swept, come to New York, and win.

  385. Pat D says:

Well at least they didn’t lose another 1-run game.

  386. BigBlueAL says:

Its games like tonight that make me lean heavily towards hating this Yankee team lol

  387. Widget says:

When does Rodney fail his drug test? He is not this good.

  388. DT says:

I wish someone would hit Girardi in the face with the Binder….

  389. JLC 776 says:

Just remember, this team doesn’t know how to win game one of a series. Consider game two and game three in the bag.

  390. WhittakerWalt says:

What an utter piece of shit this game was.
    CC- awful
    Martin- awful
    Eppley- great 0-2 pitch
    Nunez- nothing new there
    RISP- hahaha
    ARod- nice job
    Jerry Meals- please die

  391. Chilango says:

How many LOB tonight? RISPchokes? Rays hits on 0-2 pitches? Same CF as usual. All that’s left is Girardi’s post lame commentary. I wonder how he’ll explain bringing in Eppley.

  392. Kramerica Industries says:

    “Three Straight”?

    LOL. Nice try Mike.

  393. bring buck back says:

I hope I meet Joe Girardi in person sometime. I want to spit in his face. He deserves it, for all the games he has lost for the Yankees with his inept bullpen management during 1- and 2-run games.

  394. Defensive Indifference says:

I hope Joel Sherman asks Girardi if CC is hurt. Twice.

  395. DT says:

At least Arod and Jeter looked good.

  396. Kramerica Industries says:

    1-7 now in Sabathia/Price games.

Big game pitcher, that C.C. Sabathia…

    • DT says:

This year is obviously an off year for CC. Losing to Price is just an anomaly. Last year he pitched a complete game shut out vs the rays. The final score was 1-0, our only run coming off a James Shields error.

      • WhittakerWalt says:

It’s def. an off year, but we keep seeing excuses for CC’s shit performances. It’s getting really old.

        • Rocky Road Redemption says:

This year, you’d be right. Overall, I’ll continue making excuses.

          • WhittakerWalt says:

“Overall” is not doing us much good right now. Overall, for the course of his career, CC’s been great. He might win 300 games. He might go the Hall of Fame.

Right now, in this crucial stretch, when every game is a virtual must-win, he’s been a zero.

  397. Bubba says:

    CC … Weak sauce

  398. The Angry Troll says:

At least the Sox know how to win in the 9th . . .

    • Rocky Road Redemption says:

Occasionally, I guess. When they’re not getting the living shit beat out of them by the ninth, sometimes they win.

  399. Rocky Road Redemption says:

And, of course, the fucking O’s are winning the battle of the vowels.

One run, true, but fuck it all.

  400. Chilango says:

Article on relying on the HR to win ballgames:

Swisher and Granderson and Robbie have been underperforming and no one would expect Chavez and Ibañez to keep putting up their 1st half numbers, Jones and Martin flat out suck etc…but the biggest factor is the pitching. The mediocre starts, and especially the horrible middle relief have killed us.

  401. Rocky Road Redemption says:

Higher vowels up by a run after a HR!

    Fuck yeah!
