Game 144: Three Straight?

The Yankees are back in the Bronx for the final homestand of the season — they play three games against the Red Sox in Yankee Stadium to close out the season, but I don’t really consider that a “homestand,” per se — and in come the Rays looking to gain ground in the AL East race. Actually, I’m sure Tampa is just looking to gain ground in any race at this point. They’re four games out of both the division and wildcard spots and just need to start winning, like the Yankees. After going a month without winning two consecutive games, can the Bombers make it three straight tonight? Here’s the starting nine…

I still don’t understand why Andruw Jones is allowed to play. I think my grandmother could play better than Andruw Jones. She isn’t even alive. Why not just stick Casey McGhee out there? He probably wouldn’t be any worse on defense and might be a little better on offense. Seriously, did we give up Chad Qualls for nothing?!
Granderson is finally looking hopeful but the rest of 6-9 makes my eyes hurt so bad. 5, too, for that matter. Russ hasn’t been terrible lately but he is not a #5 hitter. “Nunez, SS” also makes me wince.
Casey McGehee has not payed outfield in 3 years.

I laughed. Considering he was released by a sub .500 team prior to being picked up, he kinda sucked.
McGehee shouldn’t be in the outfield, I’m just curious as to what he did for Joe to distrust him so much that he’s running Steve Pearce out there over him.
Nunez is a much better hitter than Nix. Jones and Pearce are already easy outs, its tough to give another easy out in nix.
Nix isn’t actually an “easy out” against LHP, Price might be a different story because if he’s on just about everybody is an easy out for him. I give Nix a lot of shit because John and Suzyn love him and give him far too much credit for anything, but he has hit LHP to a wRC+ of 86 this season. Not great, but serviceable from a back up infielder.
Sub .700 ops for both lefties and righties. I think Nix has done a decent job this year, but he is getting way too much playing time in my opinion, and when you already have Pearce and Jones in the lineup it becomes too much.
I hope Swisher has a good game tonight. My other wish is an improved .233 average w/ RISP moving forward for this series, it would be glorious.
Might as well run Steve Pearce out there every day until he finally has a good game…

Other than their 2, 3 and 4 hitters, the Rays lineup is pretty weak.
We’re not exactly Murderer’s Row after 1-4 though.

Can’t blame him when the ump messed it up.
You can absolutely blame him, because the situation shouldn’t have occurred in the first place.
The ump doesn’t have a chance to mess up if he can catch the ball.
I can blame him for letting the ball get far enough away to make that a close play. If you put yourself at the mercy of the umpires, calls are going to go against you at some point.
But that’s the umpire’s job. That’s all they are there to do.
True, Martin should not have let the ball get by, but he doesn’t get blame alone.
I’m not defending Darling, he made a mistake. However he’s human, if you rely on other people to do their job right instead of just doing your job right you’re at fault.
He tried to catch CC’s pitch with his shin. Watch the game before you write something stupid.

Robot umps are incapable of understanding the human body, especially if its a blown call. What do you do if a robot ump gets confused?

At least that would be fun to watch. Also I’m sure using just the camera angles we have already in place there would never be a blown call at first base again. Just feed all those angles into a program designed to find out whether runner or ball get there first, I’m sure it’s relatively easy for software designers to figure that out.
I agree we don’t have the technology yet for a “roboump” per-say but an ump in the booth could have instant access to calls. With real time push of a button on close plays indication fair-foul, safe-out, strike-ball. Still has humans involved just aided with “roboump” technology. Headsets, whatever, just get the damn calls right!

I wonder what happens when an umpire crew is terrible? I fire people that can’t perform to the expectations in my place of employment and the most we pay them is 40-50K per year. These fuckers make GREAT money and some straight suck ass. This bullshit of missed calls, terrible zones and just the constant smell of asperceam is disgusting.
Jerry Meals, Mike Estabrook, Angel Hernandez, Las Diaz, Angel Campos are 5 that top my list. I’d fire a lot of them.

I agree, shoot a hostage or three. Make an example of one of these fools and the rest will hopefully perform better or seek other avenues (asking another umps, advocate for technology etc) to get the job done correctly.
Thats the most we pay, it’s terrible hours and tons of expectations. The average per year with little experience is closer to 20-30k per year.
Pft, that’s more than I’m making now. However I have terrible hours and ZERO expectations…so there is that. I mean I get payed to listen to the Yankee game.
I’m one of the managers and after 10 years I finally got to over 100k, with 40% lumped into an annual bonus. It’s a good company, zero debt, but they know it and treat their people accordingly. Its a sales company that doesn’t promote quality of life, I work 50 hours a week so I miss zero expectations.
I usually work 50+hrs a week as well, but it’s as a store clerk, my only expectations is make sure we don’t get robbed, sell stuff to people who come in, and not make a mess.
I just wish I got overtime. I’d work 60-70 hrs per week if I got paid for it.
How do we get this same crew one week later???

I was just looking at the BP work load page earlier…Logan has to be available no? He’s only thrown single digit pitches even though he’s thrown 3 straight days.
Could be dicey… even though he doesn’t have that many game pitches you still have warmups on the mound and in the bullpen. They may not all be max effort but it’s still wear and tear.

Can’t believe Mr. Defense Martin let that strike 3 go all the way to the wall. And Sabathia 25 pitches in the inning, even with Martin’s screwup no excuse, he’s the ace. At this point I’d almost rather see Casey McGehee pitch than Sabathia. I’d rather him catch than Martin too for that matter.

He didn’t strike out on a pitch in the dirt. His approach was good and he hit the ball hard. That’s all you can do. Unless you think Jeter’s a choke artist because he also hits into a ton of DPs?
You must be new here. People were legit calling for Jeter’s head and dubbed him Captain DP in the first half of last season.
DPs are frustrating no matter who hits them. Jeter was hitting too many groundballs at the time, so the DPs happened. When he’s going good he hits line drives the other way. Same with Cano. I think Cano hits a lot fewer groundballs when he’s going good.
Either way, that was a good at-bat with a bad result. I can’t add it to the case against Cano.

2011: 42 in 105 PA
2010: 120 in only 38 PA
2009: 78 in 186 PA
2008: 87 in 119 PA
And so forth. He’s too old to be a prospect and has a career wRC+ of 81 and an even .300 wOBA. A couple of RISP hits for us now does not mean Mike was wrong to call him fodder back in April.

Nunez is much better on those kind of plays because there’s no thinking time involved. Not calling him a head case, but it’s just natural that having extra time to make the throw sometimes causes poor mechanics and, subsequently, poor throws.

Would like to see Cano throw from the left side of the infield since it’s usually a different type of throw, but, I bet Cano still has the stronger arm.
I’d go w/ Cano, cause whenever he’s throwing from the 3rd base side of second it’s always all arm, it’s just a snap throw, and I don’t think anybody has beaten it yet.
Before the 2nd play I was in the middle of posting: “it wasn’t the fact that Steve Pearce actually got a RISP hit that brought me back, it was that play from.Nunez.”

I meant mostly in the way of velocity. Or as the young folks call it, V-Lo.
V-Lo isn’t nearly as important to me as command/control. Look at Joba, he came back throwing straight heat. Problem was it was either not a strike or right down the middle. Same thing w/ Nova for most of the year: his V-Lo was great, but it was over the middle of the plate. I’d much rather CC be hitting corners at 91-93 than leak up and over the middle at 94 or 95.
Unless you’re throwing like 98+, I’ve always considered it kind of overrated. Just about any MLB hitter and tattoo a 95 mph fastball if the location isn’t good. Obviously 95 is more effective than 91 in the exact same location, but yeah, command is more important to me.
Agreed but he’s been off in location and v-lo. I’d prefer location to the v-lo, if I had to choose one (of course) but he just hasn’t looked like the big man we all know and love. I just named my third son after the man! I love me some CC, but he’s looked more like Phil Hughes than the CC that we used to know. I want the best of both worlds from the big man! I’m convinced he’ll get back in another groove before the post season.

Because the Umpire Union is way to strong, and has no checks and balances for it’s members. Jim Joyce cost a pitcher a perfect game and is still an Umpire. He also still looks like a Walrus.
Jim Joyce is widely regarded as one of the best umps in baseball. It’s a little different.
And Joyce at least owned up to it. His comments after the game made it seem that he was genuinely sorry. If players get railed for ditching the media for blowing a game, I’d like to see umpires get the same treatment. I respect Joyce for at least talking to reporters and taking responsibility for his blown call.

Does the RAB community think that K-Long will be made to walk the plank over this year’s RISP fail? I’m not in favor of firing coaches for the sake of firing them, usually, but, even with bad luck factored in, the Yankees now just seem psyched out at the plate in those situations. What began as statistical anomaly has become self-fulfilling prophecy. It doesn’t really matter how good the hitting coach is with offseason cage workouts and in-season stance adjustments (though Granderson’s regression is also troubling); part of the job has to be motivational.
He probably will if they don’t make the playoffs but it would be completely irrelevant. If any player at the ML level has to rely on a coach to that level then they should not be in the majors.
I doubt it. RISP fail is really not the coach’s fault. Their overall hitting has been good enough that I think he could keep it.
The hitting coach needs to take some semblance of responsibility for the lackluster job the Yanks have done with RISP. There’s one player above .300 in BA, the OBP is okay but that should be expected with the payroll the Yanks have and all the professional hitters they employ. Without looking I’d guess the teams that hit for a higher average also hit with a higher average with RISP. Everytime someone makes a point on here about BA it’s made out to be a useless stat and OBP is sited instead. A walk typically doesn’t get the guy in from second or third (unless their loaded), a base hit does. So let’s see some BA skill with runners on.

He relies on his altheticism to get him by, and as he gets older that’s going to be a problem. He doesn’t have any sort of arm, so you can’t just move him to right…

Swisher and Granderson and Robbie have been underperforming and no one would expect Chavez and Ibañez to keep putting up their 1st half numbers, Jones and Martin flat out suck etc…but the biggest factor is the pitching. The mediocre starts, and especially the horrible middle relief have killed us.
