Melky’s walk-off HR keeps the AAA season alive

By

Triple-A Empire State (4-3 win over Pawtucket, walk-off style) Pawtucket still leads the first round best-of-five series 2-1, but obviously a huge win
3B Kevin Russo: 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 K
2B Corban Joseph: 0-4
LF Ronnie Mustelier: 1-4, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K
1B Luke Murton, RF Cole Garner, SS Ramiro Pena & DH Darnell McDonald: all 0-3 — Murton walked and whiffed … Garner struck out twice and committed a fielding error … Pena committed a throwing error
CF Melky Mesa: 2-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 1 K — saved the season with a two-run walk-off homer off Pedro Beato with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, plus he threw a runner out at the plate to save a run … I guess there’s just something about Melky’s and big walk-off hits
C Gus Molina: 1-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 K — started the comeback rally with a solo homer in the eighth
LHP Mike O’Connor: 6 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K, 5/5 GB/FB — 56 of 84 pitches were strikes (67%) … good job, he did his part
RHP Manny Delcarmen: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 1/1 GB/FB — 21 of 32 pitches were strikes (66%)
RHP Ryota Igarashi: 1.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K, 1/0 GB/FB — 19 of 28 pitches were strikes (68%)

Double-A Trenton (3-1 win over Reading) Trenton leads the first round best-of-five series 2-1
CF Adonis Garcia: 0-4, 1 R, 3 K
LF Ramon Flores: 1-4, 1 R, 1 K
DH David Adams: 1-4, 1 RBI, 1 K — singled in the go-ahead run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth
RF Zoilo Almonte: 2-4, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 2 K – singled in the insurance run
SS Addison Maruszak: 1-4, 1 K
C J.R. Murphy & 1B Tyler Austin: both 1-3 — Austin scored a run in his first playoff game this year
3B Kevin Mahoney: 0-3, 3 K
2B Walt Ibarra: 1-2
RHP Mikey O’Brien: 5 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 4/4 GB/FB — 59 of 80 pitches were strikes (74%) … he was up to 96 on the gun, so someone was amped for the playoff start
RHP Tommy Kahnle: 2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 1/4 GB/FB — 14 of 18 pitches were strikes (78%)
LHP Lee Hyde: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 1/0 GB/FB — eight of 15 pitches were strikes, though the walk was intentional … picked a runner off first
RHP Mark Montgomery: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 0/1 GB/FB — ten of 17 pitches were strikes for his first postseason save

The season is over for High-A Tampa, Low-A Charleston, Short Season Staten Island, and the Rookie GCL Yanks. None of the four qualified for the postseason.

Just got home from Trenton, lots of talent Tyler Austin looked good at 1b made a good defensive play and ripped a single to start winning rally.Ramon Flores is a player hit a shot that was caught in dead center at the wall.David Adams JR Murphy and Zmont all have improved since I saw them last and Why isnt Mark Montgomery at AAA or better still in the Bronx. He is a player!!!!

Melky Mesa really has nice tools

  • Stephen

Awwww, and here I was thinking Melky Mesa would be called up tomorrow to start pinch running.

  • Naved

What’s going to take Montgomery to get a September call up this season. Dude has just been putting up zeroes after zeroes.

    • John Y.

He will get there. Don’t be surprised if he starts the 2013 season in the Yankees pen.

I would like to see tommy kahnle called up if not this September next season in spring training. He could be our next dominant closer. Mark Montgomery and Chase Whitley also could be up here next year also plus Melky Mesa who knows maybe he turns out to be what we need if granderson leaves after next year. Mesa and Tyler Austin in our future outfield playing left and right field and granderson in center for next year. Then mesa in center in 2014 and Tyler Austin in right field. They may not be dominant offensively but could turn out to be contact hitters that play great defense which could help us from allowing more runs to score especially with mesa’s arm. We have potential to have quite
an outfield next year. But i am not crazy about trading for Justin upton in offseason. His brother B.j. Is a talent but you wonder If apple fell far from tree as far as personality goes with Justin.

I like abe almonte better than Z.Almonte, great cf defense, great speed and switch hitter like Zollo,is a natural rh batter who both hit better lh this year.Z.Almonte has about 10 errors in rf this year.
