Update: Nunez fine, taken out of game for defense

4:12pm: After the game, Joe Girardi said he made the move for defense and that Nunez is fine. I don’t get it at all, but then again I don’t get a lot of Girardi’s moves.

3:02pm: Eduardo Nunez left this afternoon’s game in the sixth inning with what I have to assume is an injury. He drove a fly ball to deep center an inning prior and seemed to be fine. Derek Jeter took over at shortstop, meaning the Yankees lose the DH for the remainder of the game. I can’t imagine they put the Cap’n in for defense in a tie game. Jayson Nix is back in New York having an MRI on his hip flexor, so if Nunez is hurt they won’t have a backup middle infielder. Stay tuned for updates.

Hope its a minor issue but where is the offense. RISP enough said.

  2. Matt says:

Not necessarily. They may have been taking him out for defense since the game was tied after that point and he just had his at bat.

  3. brian says:

they absolutely took him out to preempt a costly error…

it wouldn’t have made a differenece, they would have pinch hit chavez there anyways

  4. Marty Funkhowser says:

Tony Pena 2013. Enough of Girardi. This guy.

  5. Mike says:

Mark Feinsand just said Nunez is not hurt and Girardi brought him out for defense

  6. Marty Funkhowser says:

Here is all I want to say to Girardi. NSFW, coarse language, but very satisfying…

  7. Eddard reboot v.1.0 says:

Does Girardi realize it’s almost October and there are only 5 games left in the season? Jesus. At least clinch the division before you start resting guys. It’s do or die and Girardi is asking to be fired. If they don’t at least get to the ALDS I’d fire Joe.

  8. Athenian says:

Lighten up on Girardi. He is managing for his job and clearly showing his ineffective ses as a manager. As I have said all season, Yankees win in spite of Girardi, while he increases their chances for losses. He is on a straight line to become Clint Hurdle or worse Jim Tracy.

  9. JohnnyC says:

It’s not like we haven’t seen this side of Girardi before. Remember the post-season in 2009? They won the WS but, along the way, he made some head-scaratching moves.

  10. Nice Scheister of Doom says:

Imagine if, sit down for this, instead of using Robertson and MFIKY yesterday, he actually saved them for a close game like today. Girardi’s job approval goes down with each passing day. He’s making me miss Torre’s bullpen mangement.

  11. Neil says:

If Girardi and his starting lineup of well rested older players blow this thing does he come back? How many years is the 2009 World Series trophy good for?

    • JohnnyC says:

Don’t you think Cashman has some blame for this as wel1? The roster construction is his baby.

      • Laz says:

Yea, but can you really foresee missing teix and arod for 1/3 of season each, gardner, mariano, pineda all baseically missing the whole season? Bullpen looks so much better with mariano in it, because it pushes 1 of d-rob or soriano back to be available in the 7th inning alot of close games.

  12. Jamey says:

Girardi knows the Cubs job is filled for at least the next year or so, right?

  13. Rainbow connection says:

A defensive replacement was removed for a defensive replacement?
