Pettitte will come off DL and start on Tuesday

Swisher, Granderson, and signs of life
Game 143: Win or and go home

Andy Pettitte will be activated off the DL and start next Tuesday against the Blue Jays, manager Joe Girardi announced this afternoon. He’ll be taking David Phelps‘ spot in the rotation. Pettitte declared himself “ready” following his latest simulated game yesterday, though he’s going to be held to a 75-pitch count in his first start back. The Yankees will have to make a 40-man roster move to activate Andy off the 60-day DL, and I suppose it could be Derek Lowe on the chopping block. Don’t quote me on that though.

My vote would be for Pierce. Doesn’t really serve a purpose with McGee here.

    • Laz

I’m thinking they will keep pierce around. Especially with Teix still down they will probably want that extra bat at 1B. I’m thinking it might be Thomas, there is really no need to keep him, Lowe has been better than him, and has alot more experience.

    • Steve S

      I actually think McGahee.

  • Bryan L

    I’d say Justin Thomas.

  • Syrio Forel/Eddard/Occasional Troll

Good to see Andy back. Here’s to hoping they get 20 solid innings out of him before the postseason.

  • Better off Eddard

Great news! He’ll get 4 good starts before a potential postseason. Os have bases loaded, no outs in extras. Their magical season continues.

    • Sweet Dick Willie

      And they don’t score.

Let’s hope it goes 20 innings.

  • Hoss

Can’t Betances be moved to the 60-day DL instead of cutting someone who might be helpful?

    • Laz

Then he acrues service time. I really don’t see Thomas being any use down the stretch, especially if you already have Lowe to eat any garbage innings.

      • Laz

I also believe it might blow another of his options, although don’t quote me on that.

Old school Andy is back. CC, HK and the kids should all be better off now. Yanks about to hit their stride again, im feeling it. You feelin’ it?

    • Syrio Forel/Eddard/Occasional Troll

      I’m feeling itchy.

    • Laz

At least if he is giving solid outings then the bullpen will be better rested. Moves Phelps to relief, and now they won’t be overworking logan, robertson, Joba, etc.

  • Hoss

O’s-Rays live on MLB network tied in top of 14th. Maybe this will go another 5 or 6 innings…

    • OMG! Bagels!

great news. Beat the crap out of each other.

  • OMG! Bagels!

I hope Andy is right and is truly ready. I’d hate to lose him for the postseason.

  • Pat D

And in other news, the 2012 Baltimore Orioles are the luckiest fucking team in the history of baseball. 27-7 in 1-run games and 13-2 in extra inning games.

    • CUYanks

At least we’re getting a little space in the WC hunt, if it comes to that.

      • Laz

A 1 game playoff in Oakland is not a good reassurance.

  • yo

and of course the O’s miss Price and Shields who we face this week

  • RetroRob

The best part is this puts Phelps back in the pen and gives the Yankees more depth. More Phelps and less Eppley and company is a good thing.

    • RkyMtnYank

Phelps in the pen is not a good thing. He’ll be completely misused like he was earlier in the season and then get crucified by everyone when he not lights out in the bullpen. Andy coming back is great but who knows what you are going to get. The Yanks just moved their second best starter(behind Kuroda) to the bp.

      • Laz

Phelps era out of the pen is like 2.5. His era as a starter is nowhere close to that.

        • Ted Nelson

But everything Girardi does is wrong! Didn’t you know?

      • UpstateYanks

Classic Phelps needs to be a starter argument, after he pitches one good game against the AAA sox. Phelps should come in anytime Joe thinks the name Epply.
