ALCS Bound: Yanks take Game Five behind Sabathia
By Mike AxisaI don’t want to brag, but I totally called the Yankees winning by 3-1 in the chat today (page six). What a performance by CC Sabathia, who put his team on his back and carried them to the ALCS on Friday night. Unreal. Bring on the Tigers.

CC FOR GAME ONE
Nice call, Mike. Now, how do the Yanks do in the ALCS, and what are the next set of lottery numbers?
Glad you answered one of my questions Mike, great foresight. You did predict it off a Teixieria homerun, but a 3-1 prediction is impressive nonetheless.
Stupid Axisa, I don’t know how he didn’t see Teixeira’s stolen base coming.
I know right, who would have expected a run because Teixieria’s legs not his bat? Joe or Ben! Get your act together Mike!
So, if you were a betting man, what do you see the final score being tonight?
by The Scheister 2:45 PM
3-1 Yanks.
by Mike Axisa 2:45 PM
Mike Axisa for Yankees 3rd basemen/#3 hitter
YES!!! CC!
CC is the MAN!
Love this.
Amber Sabathia
?@AmberSabathia
ALERT: there’s a BEAST loose at Yankee Stadium, last seen on the mound! #beastmode #ace #proudwife
https://twitter.com/AmberSabathia/status/256903894767136768
Only thing I’ve ever seen that makes me inclined to join Twitter!
Are you nuts swisher should be dumped for Dickerson the choke king is theworst hitter in the history of post season baseballdicky is a better fielder than the choke king please tellmehow Dickerson could hit worse than the worsehitter in baseball history. You can also play small ball with Dickerson swisher won’t be on the team next year so send his useless ass looking for a new boss
ummmm, I see you’ve mastered the reply button as well as stuart a has.
I think you might have a lower IQ than stuart, if that’s even possible.
He was replaced by Ronnie Wood and had to spend all that time with Jagger and Richards. He probably did his fair share of narcotics.
You must be swisher’s bitch because my iq ishigher than the choke king’s batting average. Stats. Don’t lie. He is the worst hitter in the history of baseball as opposed to Carlos Beltran who the yanks should have signed last winter instead of ck swisher it makes all the sense in the world to replace him with Dickerson except for idiots like you when Carlos Beltran hits 600 inthe world series will you still luv the choke king
because my iq ishigher than the choke king’s batting average.
Your grammar sure doesn’t reflect that…
Beast huh… I bet someone’s gonna get beasted tonight.
HEYYY NOWWWW
Great win. Girardi was a genius for leaving CC in to finish. Lineup for tomorrow-
Jeter
Ichiro
Cano
Teixera
Ibanez
ARod
Granderson
Swisher
Martin
It’s a new series so these guys could get going against new pitchers. I still move ARod down to 6th and Swisher down to 8th. Teixera and Ibanez are swinging the bat the best right now so I keep them in the middle of the order.
So, who the hell starts Game 2 for the Yankees????
Either Kuroda on 3 days rest or more likely Nova gets put on the roster to start or Phelps starts and goes 4-5 innings. It’s going to be chaotic that’s for sure-
Andy
Phelps/Nova
Kuroda or CC
Kuroda or CC
Andy
Hughes
CC
You either go CC on short rest for Game 3, or CC in Game 4 on full rest and on short rest for Game 7.
I’d go
Pettitte
Kuroda
Hughes
CC
Pettitte
Kuroda
CC
Kuroda’s the only one going on short rest once unless it goes to game 7.
thats exactly how i’d go as well. That way u get 6of7 with ur 3best and have CC for Game 7..
Kuroda
on 3 days rest?
Doubt it.
they say sinkerballers are better when tired, no?
age and ip are concerns, sure, but joe is not sending nova out there.
Tempted to go back and link to like 50 “CC is not an ace” comments.
Do it! It will cleanse us all!
On 8/23/12 I named my third son CC, not Carsten Charles but Conner Charles (compromise guys!) and I was doubting the decision afterwards as CC was ineffective, hurt and just un-CC like. This series made up for that misperception or just lackluster play because the Big Man delivered an ACE of Pinstripes performance today. I’m glad Joe left him in, he was amazing tonight!
CC for Prez!
I think the Yankees (and the winner of WSH/STL) should be allowed to activate an extra starter and/or an extra reliever for the first 2 games of the LCS, on account of getting fucked by the ass-backwards wildcard scheduling.
Well done on the screen name.
I’d be careful. Bret’s been known to sue people using the “Hitman” moniker.
CC did good, but was really benefited by the lack of plate discipline by the O’s.
It was not the most glorious of series, but they won it nonetheless. Tomorrow is a new series vs a new team. Leave all of their struggles behind they can start fresh.
It’s amazing how great pitching creates bad plate discipline
^ This.
I’m not saying he was bad, it just helped that O’s are a team that was bad with plate discipline all season. Yankees were early 4-5 innings swinging at some pitches outside too.
Sorry guys, champagne is for the pitchers and Raul only.
Okay, Tex gets a beer.
Jeter can have a beer too.
I’d give Martin some cheap wine for his HR.
Sure. He can share it with Ichiro.
and defense and calling games? staff gave up ten runs in five games.
good point. He can be upgraded to beer.
And with all the extra innings, it was really like 10 runs in 6 games.
I’m a little miffed at Jeter’s range right now, but it is what it is I guess. He gets a beer.
LOL
What about A-ROD what you got for him?
a home made brew of BOLI. i need this mofo to get going, i bet my friends that he’d do REGGIE one better the rest of the way.
What a win. I know it was stressful as hell, and the offense was generally bad, RISPFAIL, blah blah blah. But looking back on the last 5 games, that was some fucking amazing baseball.
3 wins down. 8 more to go.
I’m surprised no Stuart sightings, especially with A-Rod benched. Color me shocked.
His life is meaningless now that A-Rod’s been benched. He probably can’t even function.
Think Chillingworth at the end of The Scarlet Letter.
Excellent reference.
I wonder which one of the trolls here is the former Hester Prynne.
he was ushering at yankee stadium today.
It’s pretty nuts that this game was probably the least exciting game of this series though.
You dont call bases loaded 1 out, 1 run in in the 8th inning exciting?
That was the only exciting part of the game really. The extra innings games and Game 1 were more exciting IMO. And don’t get me wrong, this whole game was exciting. It just shows how freaking close this whole series was.
Damn, tell my heart that.
Vote for Player of the Game:
a. CC Sabathia
b. Carsten C Sabathia
c. C Charles Sabathia
d. All of the above
Hand it to Buck and Baltimore, they gave it their all. They played the Yanks even all season and in the end it came down to 2 runs. The difference was the big man. They have nothing to be ashamed of.
You can’t believe how much this series win has meant to me as a minor distraction. My grandmother suffered a stroke, that has left her in a critical state; so my entire family has been living in hell for the past 48 hours.
Real sorry to hear that man. All the best to you and your family.
I am so close with my grandmother and this is good reminder for me to call her to just to see what’s happening. Best of thoughts going out to your grandmother fellow Yankee Fan.
Thanks all of you, but yeah definitely call your grandma, you never know what can happen tomorrow so you got to treasure her.
Absolutely. I lost one grandmother in June to Alzheimer’s. My other one, I’m even closer to. She’s 92, but still lives independently, is sharp as a tac, and a huge Yankee fan. If she had a computer, I bet she would take the time to comment on sites like RAB.
I’ve been meaning to give her a call, it’s been a month or so since we talked. I’ll fix that tomorrow. Again, I hope everything works out well for you and your family.
In my thoughts.
Holy shit, I remember you saying that. Nice, Mike!
Absolutely incredible job by CC. Carried this team through 2 of their 3 wins. Saw the last inning and a half and can’t wait to watch the rest tonight.
Hopefully the hitters now think their numbers all reset and play as such.
Show the Tigers why they only won 88 games!!!
I think I might be friends with either stuart a or dalelema on facebook.
One of my facebook friends’ status updates, amid a sea of celebratory ones: “the yankees would be unstoppable if arod had more games like this…”
THAT’S what he had to say about going to the ALCS. I fucking kid you not. I’m not even really friends with the guy. He was in my fraternity (my pledge class, actually) and we kicked him out a year later for not showing up to things, but I never de-friended him, apparently.
Why the hell would you pledge a fraternity if you weren’t going to show up to anything? Was he a masochist or something?
He showed up to parties. It’s a lot more than that, though. Kid was kind of a dick anyways.
His being a dick goes without saying if his only reaction to the Yankees going to the ALCS is to talk shit about A-Rod.
I think that has to be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. Time to defriend.
Done and done. I get enough trolls here. I don’t need it on facebook too. He claims to be a Yankee fan too, it’s not like this is some Red Sox fan just being an ass.
So many fans hate Alex for reasons that I can’t even begin to comprehend. I mean seriously, he makes a lot of money, but who gives a crap?
Did you throw him a parade first?
Fuck that, I should throw myself a parade for being liberated.
Don’t forget to give yourself an extension while you’re at it.
Game 3 is gonna be crazy. We’ll likely score -3.
And CC will allow -4.
Reverse lock. They will score 28 runs that game.
agreed.
Mike Axisa >>>>> Joe Namath + Mark Messier
And certainly Jose Valverde as well
Also, I officially update my handle for tomorrow.
I hope this puts the ‘non-ace’ narrative to bed for good.
Also, props to Girardi or whomever sent Tex. That stolen base won us a series!
Detroit has no lefty starters.
And their lefty reliever is Phil Coke.
sucks for arod.
Yay, no more A’s or O’s. Time for the big boys to play it out. And no more McLouth or Lew Ford sightings til next season.
CC Sabathia, True Yankee™
Wow. Pettite announced as game 1 starter
Why wow?
There was no other realistic choice.
That’s not really surprising.
Yeah, the question is : who’s pitching game 2?
Yea I initially thought he just said Andy for Game 2 which is what shocked me
I would think it has to be Nova. Phelps’ 27 pitches yesterday might be a little too high to be considered a throw day kind of appearance, but I guess you never know. Much rather go with him than Nova I think.
Agreed on Phelps. I think I would feel a bit more comfortable with him. Nova hasn’t pitched in awhile, and when he did, he pitched poorly. Maybe the extra rest helps him, maybe it makes him worse, maybe it makes no difference. There’s an awful lot of wildcard in there, though.
Yikes, to refresh my memory I checked out Nova’s game log to see the Detroit games. It’s not a pretty sight. Once in April and once in August he got smacked all over the damn park.
Phelps was great against them, but it’s 5 innings spread over 4 relief appearances, so who knows.
Really, it’s a crap shoot either way. I would just feel more comfortable with Phelps because he’s been pitched in game situations more recently, and should theoretically be less rusty.
Yes, I’m being lazy and I know Verlander is Game 3. Who’s lined up for 1 and 2 for the Tigers.
Fister and Scherzer I’d think.
Scherzer would be on 3 days rest for game 2.
Thanks. At least we know it’ll be a righty every game. Plenty of work for Ibanez, hopefully he can keep it going and some of the other lefties (Cano, Swish, Grandy and Ichiro (though they started it today) can get their asses in gear.
Gotta think Fister G1, Scherzer G2
Fister and Sanchez, I would think
or for Yankee offense purposes, Johnson and Drysdale
Yeah, Sanchez makes more sense, he just started their last game 2.
As for your second part, sad but true.
I meant their last game 3. Geez I’m a mess…
Whoops for a second I thought he said AP for G2 which is why I was shocked.
Supposed to be a reply to my post above
I’m a 20 game plan ticket holder that means ALCS game 1 and WS game 5. I’m going to use them both when this is all done.
Thank you CC for making my Saturday night plans.
You don’t think they’ll sweep the World Series? Troll…
I can take the hit if they did.
LOL
I worked my motherfucking ass off today to watch as much of the game as I could.
First action I saw at all was Derek Jeter’s 2nd AB in the 4th inning.
I saw almost all the action starting with Mark Reynolds’ DP AB.
I earned it. While it’s disappointing I couldn’t live the game with you fine folks, I’ll gladly take the result, as insanely close as it got to falling apart there in the 8th.
Forgot to add:
Step 2: Complete
I’ll visit Step 3 when the time comes.
(you’ll have to read the Game 162 recap thread to understand what I’m referencing.)
I am in awe of CC Sabathia tonight.
Can’t even think about tomorrow right now. Feels too good right now.
Scratch that screen name above.
My screen name says I am indeed looking for tomorrow. But yeah, tonight feels fucking awesome.
I only wish I had something better than box wine to celebrate.
I’m out of:
Bourbon
Applejack
Italian liquor
Still have two bottles of rum and some rye.
I have some Bacardi still. Looks like I’m gonna be hungover tomorrow.
I LOVE this stuff.
http://www.vizcayarum.com/home.html
Never heard of it. But I live in the hood, R-Tils. Liquor stores around here don’t exactly carry the good stuff. As if I could afford it anyway.
Come to NYC. I’ll take you down to Astor Wines, where you’ll save probably a few bucks on stuff.
If only. I have a 4-day weekend around Thanksgiving that I’ll be in Jersey for, but that’s about it.
Agree.
PICTHING, PITCHING AND STARTING PITCHING!!!!!!
Game 1 – Pettitte vs Fister – Key swing game already because Game 2 will feature an unknown starter
Game 2 – Nova/Phelps vs Sanchez – Who knows?
Game 3 – Kuroda vs Verlander – Great matchup, another key swing game
Game 4 – Sabathia vs Scherzer – Another premier matchup
Game 5 – Pettitte vs Fister
Game 6 – Hughes vs Sanchez
Game 7 – Sabathia(short rest) vs Verlander
They are not giving the ball to Nova. Arod would be pitching before that happens.
So pessimists, how are we feeling now?
Yankees are a last place team, all the other teams in the division are younger/hungrier/betterYankees are a .500 team at bestYankees will blow the division by September 1Yankees will be out of a playoff spot by the end of the Tampa seriesDoesn’t matter, Yankees will be one and done in the playoffs anywaysCC is not an ace and can’t win a big gameThe Orioles will win the divisionIbanez needs to be DFA’d and replaced with Johnny Damonconfessions: i been following yankee baseball for the past 20 years. I just finished my second year of medicine and I’m taking my united states medical license exam…. this series, just took me away from the horror and pain of medicine. it also distracted me, but im just mutherfuking glad we won.
Good luck with your studies, dude. Not an easy road to take.
That’s cool. Is it that bad? I’m an undergrad looking to go into medicine.
By the way, based solely on your name, I thought you were another user that frequently lurks on this site. He’s a-rods biggest fan. (sarcasm)
Any doctorate is a long road. With medicine, we’re adding on residency and stuff. You can absolutely do it if you set your mind to it, but it’s definitely not easy.
You could also be like jjyank and just tell people you’re a doctor.
Oh yea, I’m sure its no walk in the park. But I look forward to that – I enjoy challenges. But the way some people speak of medicine makes me almost think they do it to dissuade others for less competition!
I’m not going to let that deter me though, people said the same of pre-med and orgo chem, and I’ve excelled in both so far.
Dreaming of being the Yanks’ lead physician one day and doing some development work on the side.
I hope we destroy the tigers and Jeter takes home Kate Upton while laughing in Verlander’s face.
My hatred of the Detroit Tigers only grows. Crush them.
I hate how they can’t even win 90 games in a terrible division and then they get to open the playoffs at home and get an off day in between series, which the Yankees don’t. Fuck them.
That’s one of the reasons for my growing hatred. I’m also still pissed about 2006 and 2011. Time for some revenge.
2002/2005/2009 Angels :: 2006/2011/2012 Tigers.
It is written, so it shall be done.
Anyone notice that, right now, both game threads have 585 comments apiece?
Yay for coincidences.
I’m feeling confident about the ALCS. Not gonna lie, I think A-Rod can actually flip the switch next series.
Detroit throws nothing but RHP.
He’s actually the last guy I think would turn things around.
I really, really want to believe A-Rod will come back huge in this series, since I have a bias towards him, but that last O’Day AB took a ton even out of me.
If, after having already seen the same pitcher several times in the last couple days, he can’t adjust to an 85 mph fastball and the most predictable 70′s mph slider outside in history, then how is he going to hit pitchers with anything better than that.
He also has pretty bad numbers against all the Detroit righties, except Verlander and Dotel. Dotel maybe, but he’d have to start his swing so early for Verlander that he may get embarrassed by breaking ball after breaking ball against him.
I still want to see him start, but the expectations are certainly lower.
see what youre saying but o’day chopped up the entire lineup.
FINAL COMMENT
#FUTURE 2012 WORLD SERIES CHAMPION NEW YORK YANKEES
“I don’t want to brag, but I totally called the Yankees winning by 3-1 in the chat today”
smartass
great game by CC today, tbh I thought he’d have more trouble but the Orioles offense really sucked in every single game during that series. Anyway, one step closer to #28. Now let’s beat those Tigers.
I predicted 3-1 tonight too. I just never publicly stated it.
Stack your line up tomorrow girardi they have only phil coke.
Jeter
Ichiro
Cano
Tex
Ibanez
Arod
Granderson
Chavez dh
Stewart/ martin needs a day off and pettitte is easy to catch.
i think this is pretty good, but i think you play martin. 5 days in a row is not that big a deal in the playoffs
I know we won the series, but can we all be honest here. This yankee team isn’t great and needs serious work in the offseason. A trade for a middle of the order outfielder needs to be made because this offense is pathetic. And it’s not because they’re facing good pitching either. Both teams consistently missed pitches down the heart of the plate.
Indigestion again, I see.
satire?
No, unlike other people, just because they won doesn’t mean I think they’re the best team to walk the earth. They got bailed out by Ibanez in game 3, but played pretty well tonight. But there is no way that you should average just over 2 runs/game (not including the 5 run 9th in game one, which was an anomaly) in a 5 game stretch where the “ace” is jason fucking hammel, one by joe saunders, chen (who through 90% fastballs), and miguel goddam gonzalez. These are pitchers that we should be crushing, not getting shut out by.
This is why we can’t have nice things. Because you hate happiness.
All i know is, this team isn’t putting up the numbers that they should be and that’s a problem
It’s only a problem if they lose. And there isn’t much of anything they can do about it now anyways. This is the team they have. Try enjoying the success while they have it.
Baltimore made no sense all season long, hence #OriolesMagic.
Just be glad #OriolesMagic is dead.
you gotta feel life’s joy, dude.
i’m picturing you as the comic book guy.
They don’t need to be the best team to walk the earth. The need to be the last team left.
Bench
Stewart
Gardner
Nix
Chavez
Dickerson not nunez
Dickerson lh can play all outfield is fast enough to pinch run and most important
Can be subbed for swisher or granderson when they have 0-10 slides.
Staff
CC
Pettitte
Kuroda
Hughes
Lowe
Phelps
Rapada
Logan
Robertson
Soriano
Chamberlan
Start lowe on sunday why
Lowe can keep the ball on the ground and eat innings you can back him up with
Phelps in a game this big against that tiger line up you want movement on the ball phelps would get killed by
Prince and miggy. Lowe can give you 5 and he is more crafty.
Wainwright is getting drilled.
Saw the first 3 runs in the box score, but also the 3 K’s that followed them. Just checked again and there’s now 6 and he’s already out. Looking at the box score, he’s really helping fill all the Nats hitter’s columns, lots of (1)’s in there.
espn needs to stop claiming yankees fans suck because they couldn’t get to 5pm game on a friday in the world’s metropolis. give me a break. looked pretty filled by the end. how bout they ask mlb why they played at 5pm and why had two roads games to start the series.
I said that to the morons in the game thread. Obviously they don’t live here and don’t know what a freaking nightmare it is to do anything here on a Friday night at 5.
and you were right to say it. it’s just silly. people have jobs and its tough to get to yankee stadium.
I thought it was neat that JOE had the exact lineup i wanted to go with and that is in one of these threads, i foget which one? Also, on the YANKEES MB, i also was saying JOE should bring CC back out to face ADAM JONES, because he had dominated em so soundly all game.. In fact i was raging mad when i saw CC on the bench as the players took the field before they went to commercial break, but it ended up being CC just lagging behind doing something with his glove or what not.. But i was alittle annoyed that JOE didn’t PH for CHAVEZ either of his last 2AB’s with AROD, when O”s brought in LEFTIES.. That was stupid, but other wise, i thought JOE did well managing today, but to me, it was all commonsense stuff anyways..
gunna unbuckle my pants and fap to this score all night long
Or for a real wild card
Throw freddy garcia in game two with his pile of junk he can get outs on a fastball hitting club like
Detroit.
or not
http://www.baseball-reference......4280.shtml
Nova and Garcia both were taken out to the woodshed in the 3 games they started against them. If Phelps can’t go, that game might be a sure loss.
But, Sabathia, Hughes, and Kuroda all pitched pretty well against them (at least overall, maybe one great, one eh) and Pettitte hasn’t faced them in years. If they can walk Cabrera/Fielder enough, the pitching doesn’t get me overly worried.
I want to know who’s going to hit…
I just want to thank the Orioles for their efforts this year and say enjoy being back in 4th place next year, cocksuckers!!
Was that too mean? I think not.
Also, I cannot stomach losing to the Tigers a 3rd time in 7 seasons, so please beat these fuckers.
The Yankees have shitty numbers against Scherzer, so-so numbers against Fister and Verlander, and basically no track record against Sanchez.
I’m loving this track record against Sanchez…
http://www.baseball-reference......8080.shtml
And on my birthday no less.
I’ll elaborate on this further in the game recap post, but here’s the succinct version:
Yankees have won Game 1 at home in both 2006, and 2011. They lost Game 2 both times as well.
Verlander pitches Game 3, and he’s lethally dominant right now. What’s the best way to minimize the impact? Defend Yankee Stadium turf, this time around.
You bet your ass that it’s possible.
Oh, I quite agree. If they go up 2-0, I’ll feel really good.
And naturally Game 2 is on at the same time as the Giants/49ers game on Sunday. Fucking scheduling.
Unfortunately, Game 2 is the tough one. I don’t know if they’d start Kuroda on short rest since I don’t think he’s ever done it before. That means it’s on their 5th choice. If they can have Phelps do it after 27 pitches yesterday, then they have a shot (especially against Sanchez), but if Nova or Garcia has to start, I’m not so sure either one could out-pitch even Sanchez right now.
I believe you were too mean. With that said my first words after CC threw to first to end the game:
“Die little black and orange bird, die, die!
Easy PETA members, just a euphemism
Love my dogs and all animals….well except fire ants….Hate fire ants!
Smoltz is a bitch
Cardinals are obvs. going to win this.
Winning was disrepectful to Flanny.
And I hope the O’s enjoy the 29=8 record in 1 run games (or whatever it was); while people have tried to explain why it’s not luck, that ain’t happening next year.
If they don’t beef up the starting pitching, I would not be surprised to see significant regression.
Their starting pitching looked pretty damn good against the most productive offense during the regular season in the American League.
So what is the ALCS tv crew? Anderson and Darling?
Probably Johnson, Smoltz and Darling.
I hope Darling talks a lot.
awesome game, i just got back and it was a lot of fun. was also at the game last night and that one not so much. cc was awesome and granderson decided to play baseball. hopefully cano wakes up for the alcs.
by the way, regarding the mclouth foul ball, i was in section 307, row 1, right next to the pole. i literally don’t think there was a person closer to it. it did not hit the pole. i sort of curved around it.
