ALCS Game One Thread: Tigers @ Yankees

By

For the third time in the last seven years, the Yankees and Tigers will meet in a postseason series. The previous two meetings (2006 and 2011) were best-of-five ALDS matchups that ultimately ended the season for New York, but hopefully the switch to the best-of-seven ALCS will reverse that history. Getting eliminated by Detroit at home in Yankee Stadium last year left a bitter taste in everyone’s mouth, something the Bombers will have a chance to erase these next few days.

The Tigers got here by defeating the upstart Athletics in five games despite only scoring 17 runs in the series. Six of those came in Game Five, which was headlined by Justin Verlander’s complete game masterpiece. Unfortunately for Detroit, that game also means Verlander will not be available until Game Three of this series. With the first two games in the Bronx and the best pitcher in the world still two games away, jumping out to a fast start in the series doesn’t just seem like a good idea, it’s imperative. Here are the lineups…

Detroit Tigers
CF Austin Jackson
2B Omar Infante
3B Miguel Cabrera
1B Prince Fielder
DH Delmon Young
SS Jhonny Peralta
LF Andy Dirks
RF Avisail Garcia
C  Gerald Laird

RHP Doug Fister (10-10, 3.45)

New York Yankees
SS Derek Jeter
LF Ichiro Suzuki
2B Robinson Cano
1B Mark Teixeira
DH Raul Ibanez
3B Alex Rodriguez
RF Nick Swisher
CF Curtis Granderson
Russell Martin

LHP Andy Pettitte (5-4, 2.87)

It’s chilly but an otherwise gorgeous day in New York, so weather won’t be a factor tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 8pm ET and can be seen on TBS. Enjoy.

Ticket Update: If you want to catch any game in this series, either in New York or Detroit, make sure you check out RAB Tickets for some sweet last minute deals.

    Let’s go, baby!

  2. Anthony says:

Lets go Yanks. I have a funny feeling the offense is ready to break out.

  3. oldmanalex ready to go reggie jackson says:

time to get ma drank on.

    • Robinson Tilapia (I Believe in Alex Rodriguez) says:

I still might go on a beer run tonight. Was at a beer hall this afternoon and had myself a nice hefeweizen, but that was this afternoon.

      • oldmanalex currently benchwarming says:

if AROD breaks thru, i might just get my gf to champagne me tonight

        • Robinson Tilapia (I Believe in Alex Rodriguez) says:

Word of advice: a $1.99 bottle of Verdi sparkling malt liquor can often pass just fine for champagne. It’s VERY often served at weddings.

          • RetroRob says:

I can do alot of damage (to myself) on a $1.99 bottle of champagne.

              http://www.verdispumante.com/

I actually believe in this stuff. jjyank could probably even get it around the corner.

              • oldmanalex currently benchwarming says:

in 2009 i wasted my dads MOET. i drank half of it and then for some drunken reason, i decided to bottle the wall in sheer euphoria. I’m still paying him back for that bottle…. that verdi does look pretty economical at this point.

              • jjyank (The Stare Is Dandy) says:

I’ll look into it haha. Sounds like it’s in my price range, at least.

              • RetroRob says:

They have a handy “where to find it” link. While not quite around the corner, there is one place about 1/4 mile from me. I’ll give it a try next time I’m in a champagne state of mind.

    • Deep Thoughts says:

      Quickly-

What are the rules to the RAB Drinking Game?

      1) Someone references a “parade”: Take a drink
      2) Despite John Sterling’s admonition, someone tries to predict baseball: Take a drink
      3) Granderson Ks: Take a drink

      • RetroRob says:

I’m sorry, but that will lead to at least several deaths among RAB posters. No one can drink that much before their autonomic nervous system shuts down.

      • Robinson Tilapia (I Believe in Alex Rodriguez) says:

You forgot references to binders, posts only consisting of “fuck this offense,” and any time one of us loses our shit with Greg.

  4. jjyank (The Stare Is Dandy) says:

    Let’s do this baby!

  5. Robinson Tilapia says:

My wife: “If Michael Kay practically doesn’t eat anything, why is he so fat?

My wife about 30 seconds later: “I’m offended that you didn’t jump right up and post that on your website.”

LET’S DO THIS. Alex will bust out tonight.

Not a fan of Kuroda on short rest tomorrow, but it is what it is.

  6. CountryClub says:

Cano and his over 1.1 OPS vs right handed pitching needs to enter beast mode.

  7. Knoxvillain says:

Bill Ripken on MLB Network is a fucking idiot. He must be upset at the OriLOLs too.

  8. CS Yankee says:

Surprised they went with Kuroda on short rest, but it saved Hughes in getting a start.

Hopefully Andy is on target and we get off to a great start with the bats as the pen may have to work OT tomorrow.

    • Robinson Tilapia (I Believe in Alex Rodriguez) says:

Hughes is starting the very next day. It saves the team from using the fifth starter.

There is a rather perverse part of me that’s enjoying managers having to consider using their fifth starter in the playoffs. Feels like more of a test of your entire 25-man roster. Can’t just stash that buy in the bullpen.

  9. Big "Nostradanus" Member says:

if we lost this series its all on cashman…

this game has lot of nastalgiea…miguel cabreara is the guy who was on the trade market same time as arod and cashman went with arod. now 10 years later, miggy is the best player in the game while arod hits like 50 rbis. we couldve had fielder last year too….we will see if cash ultimately make the right move.

  10. forensic says:

Not a fan of their decisions with the rotation. Hopefully it works out, but it’s a tough time to ask Kuroda to do something he’s never done before. Combine that with Hughes vs Verlander in game 3 and this game is enormously important. Hopefully the oftener decides to show up, because they’ll need it, especially tomorrow when they should hit Sanchez.

  11. vicki says:

grandy loves playing the tigers. big game for him.

  12. Karl Krawfid says:

why the hell did they stop showing the player intros?

  13. Cy Pettitte says:

Boomer picks the Yankees and Cal picks the Tigers. captivating television.

  14. Time to take the series lead.

Time to avenge the Tigers playoff defeats.

    Lets go Yankees.

  15. RetroRob says:

    John Smoltz still lives?

    Sadness.

  16. oldmanalex currently benchwarming says:

LMFAO… JOHN SMOLTZ , still hate-ing on the yankees, that fool is hung over the ALDS still. it’s like telling your ex gf, let go bitchhhhhh

  17. CC for President says:

Let’s go Andy you own the post-season

  18. Cuso says:

Notice how in TBS’ opening highlight montage they showed close-ups and highlights of different players on the Tigers and Yankees but….the only shot of A-Rod was a zoom on his face as he struck out.

No intro montage to a series ever shows “lowlights”. Leave it to TBS.

  19. Get Phelps Up (wins needed: 8) says:

Did Smoltz just say that CC was “arguably” the Yankees ace?

  20. Cuso says:

Oh my God! Shove A-Rod down our throat, please. We don’t get it yet.

  21. Hall and Nokes says:

Nice, the crew that fucked up the infield fly.

  22. babnik says:

    John Smoltz = crybaby.

  23. jjyank (The Stare Is Dandy) says:

25 more to go. And some runs, of course.

  24. RkyMtnYank says:

Alex looks pretty pumped tonight, hope that translates to some big hits.

  25. Miggy with a base hit?

Well, at least it wasn’t a HR.

  26. The Real Greg says:

You take that if you’re the Yankees

    • Get Phelps Up (wins needed: 8) says:

      I’d rather get him out.

    • jjyank (The Stare Is Dandy) says:

…or any team? Miggy and Fielder come to the plate in the same inning, and you have a single and get everyone else out? Pretty sure every team to ever play the 2012 Tigers says that.

  27. jjyank (The Stare Is Dandy) says:

    The Stare gets it done.

  28. Get Phelps Up (wins needed: 8) says:

I hope Andy reminds Smoltz of Game 5 in 1996 tonight.

  29. Hummingbird S. says:

    AP!! let’s do it offense!

  30. oldmanalex currently benchwarming says:

i mean that AROD contract is bad, I’d hate to see the ending of fielder’s contract.. it can’t be good..

  31. RetroRob says:

What’s better than a 1-2-3 inning? A hit that allows both Cabrera and Fielder to have their first ABs eliminated with no damage.

  32. manny says:

    a lot of empty seats

  33. Big "Nostradanus" Member says:

wow….”prince” is a fiesty one eh? blond dredlocks? i wonder how his teamates take that….

  34. oldmanalex currently benchwarming says:

that captain morgan commercial is pretty badass.

  35. The Real Greg says:

Wow. A four pitch walk from Fister. That’s extremely rare.

  36. Chilango says:

Fister really pounded the zone on the Capt. eh

  37. RkyMtnYank says:

That tbs pitch tracker is total shit. Even when the Tigers throw balls way out of the strike zone it shows them right on the edge or in the zone.

  38. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

Just got home from comicon. Spent all day getting my nerd on, now time to get my fan on.

What was Ichiro doing bunting after 5(!) straight ball?!

  39. Get Phelps Up (wins needed: 8) says:

Of course TBS shows Game 5 and not when Fister got bombed in Game 1.

  40. Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

How’s everyone feeling tonight. I’m feeling moderately neato after Notre Dame escaped.

  41. flamingo says:

    Miss you, Posada :(

  42. vicki says:

good sign lefties getting the ball in the air?

  43. The Real Greg says:

Lefties trying to go the other way…

  44. oldmanalex currently benchwarming says:

doug fister or phil hughes? i’d take phil

  45. RetroRob says:

…and the entire starting staff had an ERA under 2.00, Smoltz. Ignore the obvious.

  46. handtius says:

think cano is going to come up in this series. drove that first ball pretty good.

  47. Get Phelps Up (wins needed: 8) says:

I wish Ripken was announcing instead of Smoltz.

    • RkyMtnYank says:

I wish Smoltz was back in the studio along with Ripken.

    • Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

I wish almost anyone was announcing instead of Smoltz.

I say almost anyone because I don’t think I’d want to hear Joe Morgan again or Tim McCarver yet.

And I certainly don’t want to hear Hawk.

  48. jjyank (The Stare Is Dandy) says:

    Nice AB, Tex.

  49. Dan in Athens says:

    Very good at bat

  50. Hummingbird S. says:

what an AB… Teix has been excellent this postseason

    • Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

Yea but he hasn’t had any big hits, so no one’s really noticed.

  51. RetroRob says:

Ibanez walks, bases loaded, A-Rod strikes out?

Really, I’m just kidding. I hope.

    • Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

Well if it happens we know who to blame.

Certainly a near Armageddon at bat here.

      • RetroRob says:

Well he hit the ball hard and got robbed. That’s a positive. The hit-hard part, not the robbing part.

Still not sure they got the runner at second.

  52. Dan in Athens says:

    Drama

  53. Of course ARod comes up in a big spot already.

  54. Get Phelps Up (wins needed: 8) says:

Fister’s throwing lots of pitches at least.

  55. Hummingbird S. says:

    comon A-Rod.. dont choke

  56. BigBlueAL says:

Of course Arod’s 1st at-bat of the series is with the bases loaded and 2 outs.

  57. The Real Greg says:

The trouble has found him, despite trying to hide him.

  58. Joe says:

Ohh god how is it always arod

  59. Cy Pettitte says:

have to like them working them count against the Tigers. Their pen doesn’t scare me anywhere near as much as the O’s so knocking their starters out is a definite plus.

  60. handtius says:

fister is all over the place. this could be a bullpen game for detroit, which is good for the yanks.

  61. Hall and Nokes says:

First pitch swing + pop up = me grabbing something sharp

  62. anon says:

Big moments really DO find Arod no matter where he is hitting

  63. Matt says:

A-Rod with a great chance to ingratiate himself to the crowd haha.

Their at bats are a lot better than in the ALDS, but Fister is also the first guy they have faced who isn’t pounding the zone with all of his pitches…

  64. DZ says:

It always comes down to Arod, why is it never Jeter. Ughhh

  65. Chilango says:

Be a good time for ARod to step up. Let’s go!

  66. flamingo says:

Redemption would be nice here, A-Rod.

  67. RetroRob says:

    Damn it.

  68. And then ARod gets robbed.

    Go figure.

  69. jjyank (The Stare Is Dandy) says:

FUCK. Thought he was safe at first.

  70. Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

Dammit, Alex. Why swing at the first pitch?

    • handtius says:

you know the saying…you walk someone, the manager comes out, first pitch is fat. that was a good play to get that out (even though i don’t agree with the call). Inches from a 2 fun single.

  71. handtius says:

    fuck. he looked safe!

  72. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

    Bullshit call.

  73. Hummingbird S. says:

FUCK… had to be off A-Rods bat… and Ibanez looked safe.

  74. McLovin says:

A-Rod cant even buy a hit

  75. Cy Pettitte says:

can we get a better replay of that play please?

  76. Get Phelps Up (wins needed: 8) says:

The Infield Fly umpire on the job.

  77. Karl Krawfid says:

    A-Rod can’t catch a fucking break jesus

  78. BigBlueAL says:

Peralta might be the only SS with worse range than Jeter but of course he makes that play.

  79. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    It was a good call.

  80. wow says:

    robbed by the umps.

  81. jjyank (The Stare Is Dandy) says:

Obviously it’s not what we all wanted, but Fister’s pitch count is not off to a good start. If they can keep that trend going, I feel good.

  82. DZ says:

Even when he hits the ball well in clutch spots, he has nothing to show for it.

  83. RkyMtnYank says:

    bad luck :) hehe

  84. Matt says:

This is ridiculous. And TBS had such a bad replay that you couldn’t tell. Certainly looked safe to the naked eye.

    • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

The replay they showed right before commercial from centerfield he was out. Literally by about an inch, but he was out.

    • jjyank (The Stare Is Dandy) says:

I thought so too, but TBS doesn’t do replay as well as YES does, apparently.

      • Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

I’m biased because it’s “our” network, but I really feel YES has the best overall presentation of any network that does baseball.

  85. Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

I guess at least Fister threw a bunch of pitches. Whereas I came to the realization that getting into Baltimore’s bullpen wasn’t always a good thing, Johnson’s meltdowns notwithstanding, I definitely think it’s a great idea to get to Detroit’s ‘pen.

    • Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

I guess it’s good Fister threw a bunch of pitches. Typing too fast.

  86. Hall and Nokes says:

    I think he was out.

  87. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Maybe next time Ibanez will think about the team first before drawing a walk with A-Rod on deck.

  88. Nice Scheister says:

Why does TBS sound happy when the Yanks don’t come through. Mute with the radio feed coming up.

  89. Hans Moleman says:

What did the replay show? Looked out from the first base line grandstand.

  90. The Real Greg says:

So ARod hit the ball well? Bad “luck”…..

  91. handtius says:

    yeah, he was out…wishful thinking.

  92. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Shut up, you guys, he was out, it’s just bad luck. Hope you all get alzheimer’s.

    /Greg’d

  93. yo says:

    Ump got it right. Fuck.

  94. Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

Damn, he was out. So close.

  95. Chilango says:

    ARod got robbed. fuck.

  96. Knoxvillain says:

25 pitches in the first for Fister. Anyone else have a feeling the Yankees will see no more than 6 pitches next inning?

  97. Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

Peralta doing his best Craig Counsell impression.

    • RetroRob says:

What’s annoying is Peralta is not a good defender. Well, that’s just one thing that’s annoying. The ball not going through was more annoying!

      • Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

Yea, I got really sick of watching Mark Reynolds turn into Keith Hernandez/Don Mattingly/George Scott/Vic Power/Mark Teixeira/any other really good fielding first baseman in history, so I’d rather watch the Tigers butcher plays like they’re supposed to.

  98. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Anybody remember when Dan Plesac chose Jhonny Peralta as his 2009 AL MVP prediction?

    • Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

I try not to listen to anything that Dan Plesac says.

Though I heard his Jim Leyland impression earlier, and it was mildly amusing.

    • Knoxvillain says:

Ha, no. Gammons picking Bobby Crosby is the best. At least Peralta still has a job.

  99. Get Phelps Up (wins needed: 8) says:

I know he got it right, but that’s another reason why you need replay especially in the playoffs. Be fucking SURE you get it right.

    • jjyank (The Stare Is Dandy) says:

Of course. I was listening on the radio still when McClouth hit that long foul that they went to replay on. Sterling kept saying that it was foul, but you might as well use the tools you have to be sure. Why this doesn’t extend to every other facet of the game befuddles me.

  100. handtius says:

    pettitte looking good so far.

  101. oldmanalex currently benchwarming says:

man andy never misses a beat.

  102. Get Phelps Up (wins needed: 8) says:

    AP’s got this.

  103. Cy Pettitte says:

AP looking filthy so far, 2 efficient innings.

  104. VT Yankee Fan (I named my son after Andy) says:

Pettitte with 23 pitches thru 2. Fister with 24 thru 1.

  105. jjyank (The Stare Is Dandy) says:

    Awesome inning for Andy.

  106. Effthisnoise says:

    Nice,

  107. flamingo says:

    ANDY

  108. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Ugh. One Direction <333333

  109. The Real Greg says:

I’m starting to think ARod was born under a ladder.

  110. yo says:

11 pitch inning. At this rate hopefully Andy can go deep and save the pen for tomorrow when we’re really gonna need it

  111. Duh, Innings! says:

Good job by A-Rod swinging at the first pitch after the pitcher just walked the bases loaded PSSSSSHHHHHHHHHH!!!

    A-Choke strikes again.

He should be benched tomorrow for this at-bat alone regardless of what he does after it which I bet will be nothing…or he’ll get a hit with the Yanks up 8-2.

Even better, Chavez should pinch-hit for him later in the game if he has an at-bat or two like the one he just had. We’d definitely have an upgrade defensively at the very least.

    • The Real Greg says:

      Chavez sucks too, man.

    • Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

      Welcome back.

      • jjyank (The Stare Is Dandy) says:

Any guesses as do who it really is? I doubt Axisa lets his IP address back in at this point in time.

        • Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

I think Mike is forgiving after a period of time. Everyone deserves a second chance, too.

I think the old poster Rose, the big “Ohio isn’t a state conspiracy theorist,” is the only person who’ll never be allowed back.

        • Duh, Innings! says:

Um, Mike Axisa can ban me again if he wants, I could care less.

Go ahead Mike – ban me again, for the second time, even though I didn’t use any profanity or attack anyone this time. ‘Just speaking the truth about A-Rod’s ridiculous at-bat.

  112. Cuso says:

That Pepsi commercial just burned my retinas out.

    For shame, Drew Brees

    • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

Agreed. I just texted my friend who is a Saints fan, telling him I just lost all respect for Brees.

      • Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

        You had some?

        • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

As a quarterback, yeah, he’s damn good.

          • Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

Yea, well I have no respect for anyone in that organization after the bounty shit.

Not that I’ve had much for the Saints in a long time, but still.

    • jjyank (The Stare Is Dandy) says:

I have never heard of that band before that commercial. Are they really that big?

  113. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

    Andy’s on point so far.

  114. Swisher is just so awful in October.

  115. Knoxvillain says:

Swisher rocking the high socks. I nearly shit myself thinking it was Gardner at the plate.

    Also, you suck, Swisher.

  116. your mom says:

Swisher should be benched or hitting 9th.

  117. Effthisnoise says:

Sad how A Rod is the poster child for everyones anger, swisher has been crap for weeks

    • The Real Greg says:

      Money and personality.

      • jjyank (The Stare Is Dandy) says:

        What’s wrong with his personality?

        • The Real Greg says:

          He’s a bit aloof.

          • jjyank (The Stare Is Dandy) says:

? Since 2009, he’s been a great team player and a great mentor. And he’s a known batting cage/work out rat. Anyone with a problem with his personality is still living in 2005.

      • Effthisnoise says:

A Rod has handled it like a pro. Yanks have number 27 because of a huge post season by him. Swisher, granderson and cano have all been horrible.

        • The Real Greg says:

The whole centaur and feeding popcorn thing.

          • jjyank (The Stare Is Dandy) says:

Like I said above, years and years ago. Time to let that shit go.

            • Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

But the sports media never will. Especially the NY sports media.

              • Robinson Tilapia (I Believe in Alex Rodriguez) says:

It doesn’t matter. Alex is an incredibly smart and charitable guy. I don’t like his play, but I’m a huge fan of the guy himself.

Since we’re psychoanalyzing him left and right, and I think I’m the only licensed mental health professional on here, I’ve actually always thought he’s just a dorky socially uncomfortable guy blessed with a lot of talent and money.

                • Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

I know that I’d never be comfortable with all the cameras and lights on me.

  118. BigBlueAL says:

If Gardner had gotten healthier a couple of weeks earlier and had been able to get some real at-bats before season ended he would have to be starting right now for Swish.

  119. Duh, Innings! says:

Why is Girardi batting the two biggest postseason bums for the Yanks back to back?

Swing on the first pitch groundout and weak foul popout.

Bench both of them! Chavez 3B, Ibanez RF, Gardner LF and Suzuki to RF later.

    • Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

ARod was legitimately robbed. I agree he shouldn’t have swung at the first pitch considering the walks.

Gardner probably can’t be effective at the plate right now. Chavez also hasn’t been good for a while.

      • Duh, Innings! says:

Then why is Gardner on the ALCS roster?

This isn’t September where all he has to do is pinch-run and play leftfield. He may have to hit.

Gardner LF at a point where he doesn’t have to come to bat, but if he does, then he bats. If he can run for a ball in the outfield, a stolen base, or a run he can run out of the box.

Chavez has been better than A-Rod most if not all this year. He also isn’t A-Rod who is a disaster along with the dude who thinks he’s worth more than two-thirds of A-Rod’s current contract. ‘Thing is the Yanks have to stick it out with Cano. They don’t HAVE to with A-Rod – see the ninth inning on Game 3 of the ALDS and last night.

  120. RetroRob says:

I would really like to listen to Ma’ and Pa’ on 880 (words I rarely ever say) and watch the TV, but the radio is about ten seconds ahead of the TV feed.

    • Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

Yea, else I’d do that too.

      • TinoBambino24 says:

People gave Ma and Pa a lot of hell. But I’d take em’ every damn day if I had to. I can’t stand that pussy, Smoltz.

        • RetroRob says:

I can listen to them with the TV. My issues with Sterling with how he doesn’t let the listners always know what’s going on. No problem if I have the TV with the audio.

  121. your mom says:

    Hit a HR Jeter.

  122. Tom Q says:

OK, Granderson struck out, but it was a quality strikeout — used up a lot of pitches; had decent swings in there. Nothing like the crap he was serving up in the Division Series.

  123. wow says:

lol where was that first pitch to Jeter?

  124. handtius says:

guys, they game just started. can you wait to start complaining about everyone in the lineup for at least a few inning?

  125. The Real Greg says:

Either gameday is really broken or Fister is getting the worst strike zone of all time.

  126. RetroRob says:

    Needed these hits last inning!

  127. Problem is, all these rallies are starting with two outs.

  128. Get Phelps Up (wins needed: 8) says:

The Yankees really seem to be seeing the ball well. I’ll take that as a good sign.

  129. Knoxvillain says:

Two hits in two innings for the Yankees?

    wat

  130. Mick taylor says:

Why is choke king swisher playing. That at bat was pathetic . If he gets 20 at bats this series maybe a hit. Dickerson should be Playing

  131. VT Yankee Fan (I named my son after Andy) says:

Regardless of what else happens this inning those 2 out hits really worked the pitch count.

  132. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

At least we’re clogging the bases again. Only a matter of time before they start scoring, right?

  133. Chilango says:

Swisher post season .162/.281/.296 in 168 PA.

  134. Dela G says:

good god jeter’s swing is so awesome

  135. your mom says:

    Bases loaded again. I’m cringing.

  136. Cy Pettitte says:

there’s the Tigers defense we need. no more of that stuff from the first inning.

  137. Get Phelps Up (wins needed: 8) says:

Good thing JJ Hardy wasn’t running.

  138. BigBlueAL says:

Ichiro can still fly down the line.

  139. Dela G says:

    IIIIIIIIIICHIRO!!!

  140. Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

    Come on, Robbie. Wake up.

  141. Effthisnoise says:

Just me or is the tbs strike zone off?

  142. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Let’s go Bobinson.

  143. Nice Scheister says:

    DO SMOETHING ROBBIE!!! Please?

  144. oldmanalex currently benchwarming says:

this is a robbie moment. this fool better execute.

  145. handtius says:

big time here! he’s killing this at bat.

  146. Robinson Tilapia (I Believe in Alex Rodriguez) says:

This could be an epic first two innings of leaving runners on base, although I question the call on Ibanez on second in the first. Let’s not make it that, Robbie.

  147. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

ugh…Robbie. YOu cannot decide to swing before the pitcht!!

  148. Robinson Tilapia (I Believe in Alex Rodriguez) says:

Nick Swisher keeps on pooping in my kid’s diaper.

  149. Cuso says:

Wow Cano. Guessing on a 1-0 pitch? Awful swing.

  150. RetroRob says:

You have got to be kidding me.

  151. Cy Pettitte says:

    what the fuck?

  152. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

ARE YOU FUCKING KDIDING ME GTFO

  153. Tigers getting all the luck right now.

    Holy fucking shit. Seriously?

  154. Matt says:

    CLEARLY SAFE. WHAT THE FUCK?

  155. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

HE WAS FUCKING SAFE FUCK THAT SHIT

  156. handtius says:

how fucking unlucky can you get in back to back fucking innings!!!

  157. The Real Greg says:

    HE WAS safe!

  158. Get Phelps Up (wins needed: 8) says:

Thanks for a terrible replay TBS.

  159. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

That was bullshit. He beat it by a full half step.

  160. jjyank (The Stare Is Dandy) says:

Fuuuuck. That doesn’t hit Fister, 2 runs might score.

  161. Karl Krawfid says:

You have to be fucking kidding me

  162. Effthisnoise says:

Safe. Thought there was more reviews in the post season?

  163. Dela G says:

    Cano was out????

  164. Hummingbird S. says:

    insanely bad luck

  165. Eddard says:

6 men left on base already. You knew Alex would fail but Robbie needed to beat that out. Ichiro did.

  166. Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

Looks like some of the #OriolesMagic has lingered.

Robbie better watch the helmet throwing. I know umps aren’t apt to throw guys out of playoff games, but…don’t do that.

  167. RetroRob says:

This game should be 5-0 Yankees.

  168. wow says:

    un-friggin-believable.

    this is just foolish.

  169. Nice Scheister says:

Wow. Really? Looked safe in real time and on replay.

  170. DZ says:

Is this a joke. the baseball gods are fucking with us on purpose now

  171. oldmanalex currently benchwarming says:

damn robbie your slow. ichi would of had a triple.

  172. Joe says:

    Safe.fuck u shity empire

  173. your mom says:

WTF????????????????????? Just our luck. These cats have 9 lives I guess. That’s 2 used up this series.

  174. BigBlueAL says:

Its gonna be one of those games…..

  175. TinoBambino24 says:

SAFE! WHAT THE FUCK! THIS IS WHY WE NEED INSTANT REPLAY, BECAUSE OF FAT FUCKS LIKE HIM THAT SCREW UP THE GAME!

  176. anon says:

    HORRIBLE CALL

  177. jjyank (The Stare Is Dandy) says:

    I want mother fucking replay.

  178. Robinson Tilapia (I Believe in Alex Rodriguez) says:

You’ve got to be shitting me. That’s two probable infield singles that Peralta and the Tigers have gotten the benefit of the doubt on.

Just ordered some mapo tufu, which is some pretty spicy Sichuan shit. Let’s hope my mouth isn’t on fire in a few.

    • RetroRob says:

Going to go buy a case of that champagne and drink it all after those first two Yankee half innings.

  179. Hall and Nokes says:

    That one looked safe.

  180. Bo Knows says:

Crap-baskets…someone water put vaseline in Peralta’s glove or something, that’s twice in a row he’s made a great play.

  181. The Real Greg says:

This is why you NEVER expect anything in sports. EVER.

  182. Knoxvillain says:

    FUCK YOU!

I hope Peralta takes a fastball off of his eyeball resulting in an ended career.

  183. Anthony says:

C’mon!!!!!! 2 loaded bases opportunities already. Fister is not being dominant at all.

  184. Cuso says:

It was close enough that Robbie shouldn’t be chucking the helmet about it, though

I love Robbie. Don’t be stupid and give them an easy reason to toss you. Never ever saw him like that.

  185. TinoBambino24 says:

THAT CALL WAS WORSE THAN AIDS!

  186. xnyles says:

Bud, i hope you watching you goddamn skeleton.

  187. Get Phelps Up (wins needed: 8) says:

We need replay, instead we get a terrible new playoff format.

  188. Duh, Innings! says:

I could care less that Ibanez might’ve been or was definitely safe in the first inning and that Cano’s smash off Fister still resulted in an inning-ending groundout, the bottom line is this team has left the bases loaded TWICE IN BACK TO BACK INNINGS and have produced ZERO RUNS.

I bet Cano wasn’t even running hard out of the box. ‘Probably thought he didn’t have to since it hit off Fister. How was he out at first otherwise?

  189. your mom says:

    FUCKING SAFE!!!!!!!!!!!!

  190. Robbie was clearly safe. What a load of bullshit.

  191. jjyank (The Stare Is Dandy) says:

GOD DAMN IT HE WAS SAFE! At least acknowledge that, TBS.

  192. handtius says:

    fuck the fucking umps…such bullshite.

  193. anon says:

Showed the replay. CLEARLY SAFE by a half step

  194. Joe says:

Wtf bang bang clearly safe Ron u mets ball washer

  195. Athenian says:

Something has to give for the Yanks. Fucking bullshit.

  196. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

You know if that was against the Tigers we would be on replay number 85849210 at this point.

    • RetroRob says:

Glad I’m not the only one who had that thought. A single replay? No one does single replays on a close call in this day and age. That is, unless they don’t want to show he was really safe.

  197. Nice Scheister says:

“After about 10 looks, he got the call wrong.” You blind dumb fuck TBS broadcaster. IT TOOK THE REST OF THE WORLD ONCE, asshole!

  198. wow says:

How’s that human element working out for ya?

  199. Get Phelps Up (wins needed: 8) says:

I hope Robbie mentions that call to Selig when he awards him the 2012 World Series MVP trophy.

  200. Cy Pettitte says:

does the usher in the RF grandstands think he was out?

  201. RetroRob says:

I want to see multiple replays at every angle so I can be angrier. Where’s YES-Mo?! Oh, yeah.

  202. Mick taylor says:

Seligs umpires are doing what they did last year giving the game to Detroit cano was safe

  203. The Real Greg says:

This is why I never think the Yankees are never going to win the WS. Because it is a FUCKING CRAPSHOOT.

You need a lot of luck to win. And the Yankees don’t have it so far in this game

  204. Cuso says:

It was a bad call, but there were a few things Cano could’ve done differently there

    • Matt says:

Yeah, because what a terrible job Cano did getting a cookie on 2-1 with the bases loaded and lining it straight back through the middle. What a terrible job he did busting it down the line and BEATING the throw.

The umpires fucked up. Nothing you can do when they miss an obvious call.

  205. Chilango says:

It all evens out. He says as he does another shot….

  206. Dela G says:

    i hate the umps

  207. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Could Gerald Laird be fatter than CC Sabathia?

  208. nick in sd says:

    Encouraging abs from cano

  209. Cy Pettitte says:

Laird isn’t leading off the third, wtf is EJ saying?

  210. Get Phelps Up (wins needed: 8) says:

Laird should have been called out on strikes already.

  211. Nice Scheister says:

I’m unreasonably angry right now. So flipping pissed!!!

  212. your mom says:

Can’t stand Laird. He sucks but yet manages to get hits against out southpaws all the time.

  213. Anthony says:

I’d love for the replay on that, I honestly thought he was out, but you guys seem very convinced. Of course, TBS probably won’t play it if it benefits us…

  214. Monterowasdinero says:

Did Girardi come out to argue?

  215. Eddard says:

Andy is pitching is heart out and these guys couldn’t scratch across one run? 6 men left on base and now Fister might settle down. Once he gets going it’s tough to break his rhythm.

    • Matt says:

A-Rod and Cano both had 2 run singles taken away from them, and Cano’s was a hit and he was robbed by a terrible call.

Hard to do much when you play your heart out, only for the umpires to steal it from you.

  216. Cy Pettitte says:

Drew Smyly is warming up in the pen, wonder if Fister hurt his foot

    • jjyank (The Stare Is Dandy) says:

I never wish injuries on players, but in this case, I kind of hope it’s a minor injury that pushes him from the game. Yankees got screwed on that call, I wanna see some damn karma.

  217. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

The SMOOTHEST turn I have ever seen.

  218. handtius says:

they will get to fister, or just get him out of the game and tattoo the bullpen.

  219. Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

Someone called Selig a skeleton, I saw.

Poll question: Who’s been the more ineffectual leader: Bud Selig or Skeletor?

    • BigBlueAL says:

      Hordak

      • Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

Naturally the easy answer eluded me.

        • BigBlueAL says:

Well in fairness Hordak did part of Etheria where as Skeletor didnt really control any parts of Eternia. Plus Hordak was more badass than Skeletor. So I take it back Skeletor is more ineffectual than Hordak.

I feel like such a dork right now for actually thinking about this lol

          • Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

You know why you thought that? Because Hordak got beaten by the woman. Sure, she was She-Ra, but she was still a woman.

            • BigBlueAL says:

Great point. Plus she had wack friends helping her compared to He-Man who at least had some cool friends.

    • Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Funny to think that I would argue that Selig is better than Stern, Goodell, and Bettman.

      • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

Well dying in your sleep is better than being burned to death, drowning, or choked. It’s still dying.

      • Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

Well Bettman is the worst by about 12 parsecs.

But I think they all suck. Selig’s aloof and clueless, Goddell is a dictator and Stern, while probably the best of them, still likes to use that “Have you stopped beating your wife?” question when someone asks him what he thinks is a loaded question.

  220. BigBlueAL says:

I will say this Tigers lineup freaking sucks outside of Miggy/Prince and I guess AJax. Although vs RHP Avilla is a much better hitting catcher than Laird.

  221. Nice Scheister says:

I want to curb stomp an ump right now. I’m gonna go take a breather.

  222. Knoxvillain says:

    Ron Darling
    Al Leiter
    John Kruk

I wish that was the booth for all Yankee playoff games.

  223. TinoBambino24 says:

    Tex is hot right now.

  224. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

    Mark Teixeira: “Fuck yo shift.”

  225. Hall and Nokes says:

    Yeah eff you Maddon!

  226. handtius says:

    fallacy of the predetermined outcome….

  227. Knoxvillain says:

Through the shift? Nice. I feel like it should be 6-0 Yankees right now.

  228. Dela G says:

    Through the shift!

  229. Effthisnoise says:

Fister gets hit off the wrist, prob stays in for 8 innings, if it was a yankee, would have been out for 2 seasons

  230. CC for President says:

Shift this bitches… You go Tex…

  231. Tom Q says:

How are they going to tell if the injury “affects his pitching”? It’s not like he’s been mowing them down.

  232. TinoBambino24 says:

    Rodriguez is due right here.

  233. RetroRob says:

Prince Fielder actually believes Teixeira is fast because Prince is so slow.

  234. Nice Scheister says:

The Yanks hitting timing is off. They K when they need a fly, pop up when they need a grounder…the other night speaks to me…first a K then the fly that would have won game four, if the order of events was swapped. Just one example but damn. C’mon Yanks, kick some ass! Breather is starting now…

  235. Matt says:

Selig probably thinks this stuff “evens out.”

How many times have the Yankees been directly screwed out of a run by missed calls at first base this season?

    This is a joke.

  236. Eddard says:

So glad they put Alex in the 6 hole tonight. Four men left on base already.

  237. yo says:

    Oh Alex… oh my

  238. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

The only way that pitch could have been more hittable is if they put it on a tee.

  239. Effthisnoise says:

Damit A Rod, i want to believe but fiuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck

  240. Hummingbird S. says:

fact of the matter is, A-Rod should not start against a RH pitcher for the rest of this postseason.

  241. Dela G says:

    god damn it

  242. wow says:

that’s just what we needed. geez, at least make him work.

  243. Joe says:

2 outs are better than one.

  244. your mom says:

Is there anyway to bat Swish, Arod and Grandy 9th?

  245. BigBlueAL says:

When was the last time Arod hit the ball in the air with some authority?? The near game-winner in extra innings vs Boston??

  246. Bret "The Hitman" Gardner says:

A-Rod GIDP, what a fucking surprise.

  247. Hall and Nokes says:

Alex is like a cartoon character at this point. I expect him to pull out an Acme bat his next time up.

  248. mike says:

Hey Arod, go back to striking out, less damage done

  249. mike says:

Hey Arod, go back to striking out, less damage done

  250. Matt says:

Fister has NOTHING tonight. But the Yankees have been robbed left and right by lucky defense and terrible umpiring. If Detroit wins this game by 1 run, it will be one of the most disgraceful umpiring shows in a year filled with some of the worst of our lifetimes.

  251. TinoBambino24 says:

Can the stadium be any louder? (sarcasm)

  252. yo says:

At least is defense is still passable

  253. Tom Q says:

Geez, for a second I thought they were going to call Infante safe, and I’d have thrown something.

  254. Duh, Innings! says:

Ok, time for Girardi to not only have Chavez take over 3B and the #6 slot from A-Rod the rest of this game, but to bench A-Rod tomorrow and Tuesday.

No way is he in any way, shape, or form good enough to face Verlander or whoever the Tigers start in Game 3.

If the Yanks go to the World Series, I’d even strongly consider leaving him off the postseason roster altogether or give him a choice: the bench or off the postseason roster, go home, and make a list of where you wanna go this offseason cuz you’re done as a Yankee, enough is enough, and if you’re not done i.e. you can’t be traded, learn 1B and RF cuz you’re gonna be the most expensive backup 1B/3B and third-string RF in MLB history and you can kiss breaking the homerun record goodbye even more…unless you agree to a trade or a buyout. He can definitely kiss his last $18M in homerun milestone bonuses goodbye as no way he gets to 755, 762, and 763 HRs. At this rate he may not even make it to 714 HR (70 HR away.)

I am SICK of the Yanks babying this guy!!!

    • Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

OK, he’s not getting traded, because the Yankees will never eat enough money to foist him off on some other team, and there’s no way the Yankees could buy him out. They’d have to flat out release him in which case they’d still have to pay him the full contract.

I know you harped on this before, but it’s just not realistic.

  255. Eddard says:

They just let Fister get in his rhythm last inning. Now he’s going to go 7 innings and throw up all 0s. Andy will have to do the same if we’re to have a chance to win.

  256. Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

You know, if he doesn’t come out right after getting hit by the batted ball, I don’t think they should be allowed to use an injury replacement warmup.

  257. Mick taylor says:

This is what annoys me about girardi why doesn’t he argue that play on cano with the umpire. If it was leiland or showalter they would just to let him know he was wrong and put him on notice not to screw the yanks again

  258. Matt says:

For a team with guys like Jackson and Cabrera, you’d be surprised to see that Detroit was 26-25 against LHP this year. Cabrera hit just 4 of his 44 home runs against LHP this year.

  259. Cy Pettitte says:

“Jeter does this so often” yes, because he has no range, lol.

  260. Duh, Innings! says:

    Bench A-Rod tomorrow and Tuesday!

Start Chavez at 3B and in the #8 slot (Martin #9.)

    • Knoxvillain says:

      DFA A-Rod
      Call up Pena

A-Rod’s sucked, but Chavez hasn’t done anything.

      • Duh, Innings! says:

Well, Chavez should be given a chance to do something since A-Rod hasn’t done anything.

6-4 with the bases loaded and GIDP.

I doubt Chavez could do worse than that in the at-bats he should get in place of A-Rod.

  261. Chilango says:

Even the binder says Swish and ARod should be benched

  262. Nice Scheister says:

Who are are the 14 HOFs on the field tonight? Jeter, Ichiro, A-Rod, Miggy, Fielder, Verlander, CC, who else?

  263. yo says:

Wow is the wind that bad?

  264. Get Phelps Up (wins needed: 8) says:

    Andy’s dealin’

  265. Matt says:

Man, the Yankees SP is on fire. CC, Pettitte, Kuroda. If the offense could just get something across for these guys…

  266. Effthisnoise says:

Stub hub had tickets as low as 30 bucks today. So many empty seats. A little of no faith and people realizing they have been screwed on ticket prices since the new stadium opened. Either way, this feels more like a july game than a playoff game

  267. RetroRob says:

    Yankees are leading 4-0, right?

  268. Hall and Nokes says:

Is this a sellout? Doesn’t look that way.

    • RetroRob says:

It’s a sellout. You’ll never see 100% of the seats filled with internal bars and the open concourse where people can still watch the game without actually sitting.

  269. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Was Swish wearing high socks before?

  270. Swisher really is just an auto-out at this point.

  271. BigBlueAL says:

Swish gets a 2-0 count and pops it up.

  272. Dela G says:

    swisher = useless

  273. oldmanalex currently benchwarming says:

who cares about fister’s wrist. how about the botched call at 1b

  274. TinoBambino24 says:

    He’s a goner. Bye, Swish.

  275. Matt says:

2-0, 86 mph fastball right down the middle, and a pop out from Swisher.

What is wrong with these idiots?

  276. Chilango says:

    Swisher the automatic. Fuck you.

  277. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    UNIBROWWWW

  278. Duh, Innings! says:

BTW is three hits in a row too much to ask for?

  279. Joe F says:

    This offense…

  280. Granderson has gone 3-1 in both of his AB’s, and K’d/flew out both times.

  281. Knoxvillain says:

Yankees had their chance to get to Fister in the first and second. It might have cost them the game.

  282. Cy Pettitte says:

so many hittable pitches, they gotta start squaring these up better

  283. Joe says:

But swisher walks and gets hits in regular season isn’t that the Yankees goal?

  284. Athenian says:

    Swisher needs to go.

  285. cjc says:

pop ups on 2 meatballs down the middle the missed oppurtunites are going to fucck us

  286. Pat D (I'm not adding to my handle. Aw, crap.) says:

    Le sigh.

  287. JJ says:

    Where are the Swisher apologists?

  288. Effthisnoise says:

Average chhese with no movement right down the middle, back to back popups. The story line will be Fisters gutty game after being hit in the wrist and not the botched call at first that kept him in the game.

  289. Anthony says:

I guess its kind of nice we don’t have to worry THAT much about scoring runs before facing the bullpen (like in the ALDS). That being said, some runs would be really nice right about now.

  290. Matt says:

The Yankees have been robbed a few times, but come on! This is pathetic! Fister is falling behind on every hitter and throwing them pitches RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE and they still can’t hit him!

  291. Hummingbird S. says:

what a joke of an offense

  292. VT Yankee Fan (I named my son after Andy) says:

So much for the high pitch count.

  293. BigBlueAL says:

All 3 hitters that inning had hitter’s counts and made weak contact against a pitcher who cant throw harder than 90 mph.

  294. Knoxvillain says:

That Shaq and Buick commercial was hilarious.

I’m sure Shaq drives a Buick.

  295. Bret "The Hitman" Gardner says:

First 2 innings were very confusing, offense looked like it actually might do something. Last 2 innings have made a lot more sense.

  296. wow says:

it’s a shame that the umpires have affected the game this much. Now, Fister is settling down.

  297. Athenian says:

Can’t believe they have not scored on this mediocre fuck! For the love of God, Yankees please do something other than continue to rack up zeros.

  298. Eddard says:

4 hits and 3 walks in just four innings for Fister and they have 0 runs. And I don’t want to hear this garbage about crooked umps or lucky defense. Crush bad pitching, hustle to first and that doesn’t happen. Fister is throwing 90 mph right down the middle on 2-0 and 3-1 and they’re doing nothing.
