ALDS Game Four Thread: Orioles @ Yankees

The buzz of last night’s Game Three win is still in the air, and now the Yankees have a chance to clinch a trip to their third ALCS in the last four seasons with a win tonight. The pitching has been stellar so far and Phil Hughes will look to continue that trend in Game Four, but there is a well-rested bullpen behind him if necessary.

Unfortunately, the Yankees family lost a member recently as Joe Girardi‘s father Jerry passed away following a long fight with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 81. Joe will remain with the team and manage tonight’s game though, which is something I’m sure his father would have wanted him to do. Let’s win it for Jerry Girardi fellas. Here are the lineups…

Baltimore Orioles
LF Nate McLouth
SS J.J. Hardy
RF Chris Davis
CF Adam Jones
C  Matt Wieters
DH Jim Thome
1B Mark Reynolds
2B Ryan Flaherty
3B Manny Machado

LHP Joe Saunders (9-13, 4.07)

New York Yankees
DH Derek Jeter
LF Ichiro Suzuki
1B Mark Teixeira
2B Robinson Cano
3B Alex Rodriguez
RF Nick Swisher
Russell Martin
CF Curtis Granderson
SS Jayson Nix

RHP Phil Hughes (16-13, 4.23)

The weather in New York is gorgeous but a little chilly, so perfect playoff weather. First pitch is scheduled for 7:37pm ET and the game can be seen on TBS. Enjoy.

  1. Rocky Road Redemption says:

I’m leaving when the game starts, but let’s go Yankees!

    Really exciting stuff.

    • RetroRob says:

Let’s hope you return to a celebration!

      • Rocky Road Redemption says:

Oh no, I only mean leaving the game thread. I’ll be watching, I just have no interest in dealing with the horrible negativity that pops up whenever the Bombers are struggling.

  2. We play today, we win today.

    ‘Das it.

  3. Yankee stadium better be loud from start to finish. The Yankees players need you to be loud.

  4. Jayson Werth fucking EARNED that home run!

    • VT Yankee Fan says:

Too bad you can’t win in the postseason with home runs.

    • jjyank (Phil Phucking Hugheslladay) says:

True that. I got home from work just in time to see it, though I was following on the radio at work. Good for the Nats, their fans seem genuinely giddy for October baseball. I’m happy for them.

  5. Get Phelps Up says:

Nationals: another team that didn’t get the memo that you can’t win with homers in the playoffs.

  6. forensic says:

Extremely disappointed to see Grandy and Swisher in there with Ibanez on the bench.

Also disappointed, though slightly less so, that this is the night Girardi drops A-Rod and bumps up Tex since its a lefty on the mound.

    • The Real Greg says:

Benching Ibanez makes sense logically. Saunders has one of the biggest platoon splits in the majors.

Girardi is going pick his spot to use him.

    • RetroRob says:

Despite his leftyness, I believe Girardi would have played Ibanez tonight if Jeter wasn’t DHing, and I totally want Jeter in there since he’s crushed lefties all year and has been one of the few Yankee players hitting so far.

One of Swisher or Grandy will do something positive tonight….hopefully.

  7. vicki says:

whaddayaknow. few days ago reds-cards lcs looked like a lock.

  8. The Real Greg says:

By the way, given the recent news, lets give Girardi a break tonight, unless it is a completely assinine move.

    • forensic says:

Do you sleep with your life size poster of him or do you just have it mounted above your bed to feel good when seeing it at night?

It’s sad about his dad, but nothing you ever say about Girardi should be taken with more than half a grain of salt.

      • The Real Greg says:

I am completely capable of criticizing the man. I’ve done it before.

        • Robinson Tilapia (I BELIEVE IN PHIL HUGHES!) says:

          Well thank GOD.

          • RetroRob says:

There obviously is some back story here that I’ve missed. Is Greg a super pro Girardi guy?

            • Robinson Tilapia (I BELIEVE IN PHIL HUGHES!) says:

No clue. I was just making fun of the “I am completely capable of criticizing the man” disclaimer, as if it actually matters.

            • The Real Greg says:

I am a super pro Manager Coach guy. I don’t like putting blame on the managers/coaches because they are not on the field playing. If they tab a person to get a job done, then it is the player’s job to get it done.

            • forensic says:

He’s almost like the reverse stuart a, but for Girardi. Nothing he does is ever a bad move.

  9. Trio of Game 5′s. There doesn’t need to be another.

    Finish it tonight, Yankees.

  10. Robinson Tilapia says:

Why does David Wells look like Mick Foley right now?

  11. Curtis Grandyerson a.k.a. Sombrero Sanchez says:

    Lets GET this

  12. The Real Greg says:

I actually think if Jeter hadn’t gotten hurt, Ibanez would be DH’ing today.

  13. dkidd says:

let’s phuck these baltimore phuckers in the phace!!!

  14. Robinson Tilapia (I BELIEVE IN PHIL HUGHES!) says:

    Wait, Winger?

  15. Karl Krawfid says:

    Finish em’

  16. TomH says:

So, since Hughes is surely on a really short leash, is it a Phelps/Lowe follow-up if things go wrong?

  17. Eddard says:

Phil and Phelps are gonna win tonight. Offense comes alive and the team wins for Jerry Girardi 7-4. Yanks become the only team to win their LDS in less than 5 games.

  18. Cuso says:

TBS (besides outright sucking) models their baseball coverage too similarly to their TNT basketball coverage. Craig Sager & David Aldridge make me sick with their lack of knowledge

  19. ARod says:

The rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated, i’m all in tonight bitches.

  20. Joe F says:

I want to be at the game again. I didn’t want to leave early this morning.

  21. jjyank (Phil Phucking Hugheslladay) says:

Moment of silence was classy. Win this for Jerry.

  22. VT Yankee Fan (Phil Phranchise) says:

    Let’s do this!

  23. awesomeo says:

SO PUMPED! Hopefully they come out relaxed after last night and just put the wood on the ball. Enjoy the game everyone.

  24. Don't Get Phelps Up says:

If we make the ALCS, would we rather face the Athletics or Tigers?

  25. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

Phil still have the ‘Stache going?

    • jjyank (Phil Phucking Hugheslladay) says:

      I couldn’t see/wasn’t paying attention.

By the way, I wanted to tell you that the NFL QB on twitter thing that you posted earlier today had my entire office in stitches.

  26. King George says:

    Let’s go, Yanks!

  27. Lead-off walk.

We don’t need that shit, Phil.

  28. RetroRob says:

    Get Phelps Up.

  29. The Real Greg says:

I don’t like this right off the bat. He doesn’t look good.

  30. Cy Pettitte says:

    are you kidding me?

  31. forensic says:

Not an ideal start. Tons of fouls and then a walk, and then that little shit…

  32. King George says:

    And here we go.

  33. Don't Get Phelps Up says:

    Take the free out.

  34. Here we go with #OriolesMagic.

  35. The Real Greg says:

Ah the Orioles providing their early magic.

  36. Pat D says:

Again Smoltz mistakes this park being home run prone with it giving up a lot of runs.

    • RetroRob says:

…and he assumes it’s equally favorable to left as it is right. I mean, he doesn’t even have to look that up to see the short field in right.

My guess is he does know it. He was too successful as a pitcher to not understand how a park plays. He’s just going with the meme to feed the masses.

  37. Robinson Tilapia (I BELIEVE IN PHIL HUGHES!) says:

That bunt sucked my ass. Seriously.

  38. There’s the first out. Let that get Phil into a groove.

  39. Effthisnoise says:

This has 5 run 1st wriiten all over it. Please Hughes settle down

  40. Electric nunez says:

    Hughes give me agita

  41. Mike HC says:

There was no chance at throwing McLouth out there?

  42. King George says:

All right, all right. One more out.

  43. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

You all need to have a little phaith ;)

  44. Hummingbird S. says:

every single fastball has been up in the zone.. that’s dangerous

  45. Pat D says:

Look’s like it’s a good thing the bullpen is relatively fresh. Too many damned pitches, Phil.

  46. ArchStanton says:

Scary flyball guy was scary, but no harm done. Whew.

  47. The Real Greg says:

Hughes survived by the skin of his teeth.

  48. Hummingbird S. says:

not pretty, but it did the job, thankfully.

  49. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

    Phlyball Phil Phuckin Hughes :D

  50. Cy Pettitte says:

phly ball phil in phull effect. way to escape the jam.

  51. handtius says:

hughes!!!! get your feet wet. get the rust off. now pick it up.

  52. Effthisnoise says:

  53. Electric nunez says:

Amen hughes made it thriugh 1
    Get phelps and lowe ready.

  54. forensic says:

    Whew, thank you.

  55. RetroRob says:

Nice recovery from the deadly bunt. Don’t want a bunt turning the Orioles’ postseason around.

  56. Whew.

Time for the bats to go work.

  57. Eddard says:

Looks like Phelps will be needed tonight. Phil might limit the damage but he will throw a lot of pitches to do it.

  58. jjyank (Phil Phucking Hugheslladay) says:

Word. I kind of expected Hughes to be a bit rusty after a 10 day layoff. Hopefully he settles down a bit.

The offense spotting him some runs would sure help :)

  59. Robinson Tilapia (I BELIEVE IN PHIL HUGHES!) says:

I thought this had five run first written all over it.

    Maybe it still does. :)

  60. Kevin says:

Yeah, okay Curtis, you made the catch and stranded runners at 1st and 3rd, but where was the bubblegum bubble? Looking cool is surely more important than being effective, right?

  61. Don't Get Phelps Up says:

At least Alex has been more productive than Wieters.

  62. Electric nunez says:

Phil would be a cy young pitch in
San Diego which is latin for a whales vagina.

  63. yo says:

  64. Joe F says:

Meredith is so hot. I met her and Kay last night. Her PR person is a bitch tho.

  65. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

Saunders seems like a LHP version of Garcia…and something tells me Garcia’s junk would mystify the Yankees for six or seven innings.

  66. Pat D says:

    Just barely out.

  67. Pat D says:

Glad to see the energy of the crowd at the end of the game last night carried over to tonight.

  68. Mike HC says:

I don’t know … looks like he should be able to play short to me running

  69. OMG! Bagels! says:

I sometimes listen to Sterling and Suzyn and have no clue what the hell is going on in the game. Same with Kay and O’Neill (though Kay got better this year, maybe something was said to him that he should actually talk about the GAME in the booth) but if I am only reading game threads on RAB, I have NO CLUE what is going on except we are losing 11000-0 through 6.

    • Pat D says:

Was listening to the Reds/Giants game on the radio when I was running errands today. Berman’s play by play is…interesting, let’s say.

    • jjyank (Phil Phucking Hugheslladay) says:

Haha. Hopefully the game thread gives a better portrayal tonight. Last night was borderline embarrassing.

    • RetroRob says:

So you don’t know what’s going on in the game if you’re listening to the radio, watching TV or following on RAB? You’re running out of avenues!

      • OMG! Bagels! says:

clearly. I shut Kay off when I’m all hearing about is lunch but Sterling is calling 2-1 counts when he just said it was 1-2 or some crap like that. I’m always screaming at the radio. On TV I can watch but the whole food thing makes me crazy.

My best bet is to walk along streets in Manhattan and judge from the sound of the crowds in bars what’s going on.

        • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

Honestly, the ESPN Radio crew isn’t bad. Just mute the TV and put that on.

        • RetroRob says:

Sterling is the one who drives me crazy because he’s radio. I have no problem sitting with the sound off for TV. I can see for myself what’s happening when the game’s on TV. Radio requires an announcer to help paint what’s happening on the field. I feel defenseless when all I have to depend on is Sterling, who gets excited with the other team gets hits, seems oblivious when the Yankees hit a ball, unless there’s even the slightest chance it’s a HR.

  70. ArchStanton says:

This zone to Ichiro has been awful.

  71. Hummingbird S. says:

very generous strikezone to an O’s pitcher, yet again

  72. Hall and Nokes says:

    A walk!

  73. Cuso says:

Don’t tap the Ump, Robbie. He’s evil.

  74. Cuso says:

Oh man that was your pitch!

  75. The Real Greg says:

Cano has been horrible in this series.

  76. Electric nunez says:

Rosery beads and bacardi ready for top of the second.

  77. King George says:

Well at least we’re seeing them more selective at the plate as opposed to last night’s first pitch swing-for-all.

  78. SammySosasBleachingCream says:

Cano continues to be a no-show.

    • RetroRob says:

      It’s A-Rod’s fault.

      • handtius says:

yeah, what a jerk. he’s so bad, he’s messing up the rest of the team. jerk.

        • RetroRob says:

Seriously though (my first comment obviously wasn’t) is if nothing else you’d figure A-Rod absorbing all the media negativity would take some of the pressure off the other hitters. Maybe he does, but hasn’t shown up in the early showing. Then again, pitching is generally tougher in the postseason. Just ask the Orioles.

  79. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

If the Yankees don’t beat Joe Saundershit I’ll never root for them for as long as I live.

  80. The Real Greg says:

    That 1-1 was a strike

    • anon says:

If Phil continues to get squeezed in the zone on actual strikes while Saunders gets a foot on each side of the plate, it’s going to be a long night…

  81. Hummingbird S. says:

on the other hand, the strikezone for Hughes is pathetic. gotta love those umps

  82. Stratman9652 says:

Remember last year when it was “I believe in AJ Burnett”? Good times…

  83. Hughes sharper here to start the second.

  84. Electric nunez says:

Well it apears there are two strike zones tonight.

  85. The Next Guy says:

Phil is certainly getting a ton of swing-and-misses early on.

  86. Pat D says:

Is TBS amplifying the PC Richard sound?

  87. Don't Get Phelps Up says:

But I thought it was a given that every Reynolds AB would be a HR tonight…

  88. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

  89. Pinedas' Colada says:

    21 more outs!

  90. forensic says:

    Mucho better inning there Hughes!

  91. handtius says:

    think phil will be a-ok.

  92. jjyank (Phil Phucking Hugheslladay) says:

Much better, Phil. Much phucking better. Keep this up, my man!

  93. Don't Get Phelps Up says:

    Ephicient Phil.

  94. Kevin says:

When Hughes struck out Reynolds just then, did you guys watching in the US also get the little ‘whistling’ strikeout noise, or is that specially reserved for us UK viewers?!

  95. VT Yankee Fan (Phil Phranchise) says:

Good pitch count recover in that inning.

  96. OMG! Bagels! says:

Last night’s game thread: you suck (approximately 7000 times), where the fuck is the offense (approximately 10000 times), you really suck (approximately 8000 times), take a fucking pitch! (about 5000 times), we’re doomed (about 12000 times), here we go again (about 17,500 times), we deserve to lose (about 17 times), this is game 2 all over again (14 time), I hate you (fill in Yankee name) (about 1200 times), I hate you (fill in Orioles name) (about 1100 times).

OHMMYGODTHATWASMAGIC. RAAAUUULLLL. I LOVE THIS TEAM!!! OH MY GOD!!! This is the greatest game EVER. It’s 2009 all over again!!!! I love the Yankees!!!! RAAAUUULLLL!!!! (a few times)

  97. The Real Greg says:

Predicition: Russell goes oppo bomb against Saunders some time in this game.

  98. Don't Get Phelps Up says:

This has to be the first postseason game for the Yankees without Jeter at SS since 1995, right?

  99. anon says:

Let’s hope Phil doesnt continue to get squeezed on actual strikes in the zone while Saunders gets a foot on each side of the plate, and on the top and bottom. Otherwise it will be a long night.

  100. Saunders not all that sharp right now. Gotta capitalize.

  101. handtius says:

goog job arod. not swinging at the slop.

  102. Hall and Nokes says:

Look at Ibanez being a good sport and clapping for Alex’s walk

  103. David N says:

Nice job by A-Rod taking the walk.

  104. awesomeo says:

Now steal 2nd arod. I command you!

  105. VT Yankee Fan (Phil Phranchise) says:

I’d like to see ARod going here.

  106. Defensive Indifference says:

Raul would have stole second and third by now.

  107. They are just missing these pitches right now.

  108. anon says:

Damn. Two good hard swings from Swish and Martin and they both just missed and hit it right at McLouth

  109. ItWasaThing says:

Saunders is leaving quite a few hittable balls over the middle of the plate, hopefully they start capitalizing on these.

  110. Stratman9652 says:

Guys aren’t getting the barrel of the bat on these and are still hammering them, give it time.

  111. SammySosasBleachingCream says:

    Three and out for Curtis?

  112. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

    Curtis…come on man.

  113. Kurtis with a K.

    Well, that’s shocking.

  114. Hummingbird S. says:

there’s no good reason for Granderson to start this game… he’s a fucking joke

    • The Real Greg says:

The only other option is Brett Gardner.

      • Hummingbird S. says:

who would definitely have an AB of more than 3 pitches and can actually play CF, unlike Granderson’s sorry ass

      • SammySosasBleachingCream says:

Joe Torre wasn’t afraid to bench guys who weren’t producing. Tino and Boggs both got benched in ’96.

  115. Hans Moleman says:

    Put Gardner in.

  116. handtius says:

grandy needs to find that lefty on lefty magic he had going on before the allstar game.

  117. jm says:

Ok the goal of making saunders look like a first-ballot hall of famer is still intact.

  118. Cy Pettitte says:

Granderson’s ABs are so bad. at least Arod works the count.

  119. David N says:

Predictable Granderson K is predictable. Sigh…

  120. anon says:

Grandy looks fckin AWFUL right now. BG or Raul cant be any worse hitting against a LHP

  121. stanley a says:

    predictable Kurtis strikeout is predictable

  122. CountryClub says:

Ball isn’t carrying at all tonight.

  123. Electric nunez says:

Granderson lost up there kevin long should be worried about his job this off season.

  124. ItWasaThing says:

Curtis hasn’t looked this awful in 2 years.

  125. RkyMtnYank says:

Kurtis still looks terrible, I’d rather watch Gardner bunt for a single.

  126. HughesPhanInBeantown says:

    Alright, here we go Hughsie.

  127. Pat D says:

I want to make a comment about a commercial, but I can’t. Damn politics ban.

    • RetroRob says:

No political ad in my area of NY. I’m guessing it was the local break in for either NJ or perhaps close to Philly if I remember where you said you live.

      • Pat D says:

Yea, I’m in what would be considered Philly area.

Thing is that it’s an ad I’ve seen on YES, too.

  128. RetroRob says:

One positive, I guess, is the Yankees did hit some fly balls of Saunders. If that continues, they’ll get to him.

  129. The Real Greg says:

I don’t like Grandy right now any more than all of you. But we have no choice. I don’t trust Brett Gardner on offense.

  130. Pinedas' Colada says:

    Cashman needs to trade Granderson.

  131. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

Showing way to much respect to Machado here.

  132. SammySosasBleachingCream says:

    WTF Phil?

  133. Electric nunez says:

  134. King George says:

Phil. Find the zone. That is all.

  135. stanley a says:

    Here we go…..

  136. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Yay Nate McLouth former all star yayyyy

  137. Seriously. Cannot get Nate McLouth out at all. This is ridiculous.

  138. Hummingbird S. says:

    Hughes implosion coming..

  139. King George says:

  140. Pat D says:

Top of the order coming up, Hughes has them right where he wants them.

  141. Electric nunez says:
  142. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

Phil gets out of this allowing no more than 1 run.

  143. The Real Greg says:

I hate this. I had a bad feeling about Hughes. His postseason ERA sucks. He is not a big game pitcher.

  144. Captain Gift Basket says:

Fuckin’ figure him out already. Christ – the guy was dumped by 2 teams.

  145. Electric nunez says:

    Opening the Bacardi.

  146. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

    Nice play!!!

  147. jjyank (Phil Phucking Hugheslladay) says:

    Nice play Hughes!

  148. Hummingbird S. says:

get Phelps up ASAP… dude has no idea where the FB or the changeup are going, and for some reason he doesnt want to throw the curve

  149. Joe F says:

  150. Well done there, Phil, and now the DP opens up as well.

  151. RetroRob says:

  152. Don't Get Phelps Up says:

Thanks O’s for using a stupid contact play!

  153. David N says:

    I’ll take that.

  154. Hummingbird S. says:

nice play Phil! at least you can field

  155. handtius says:

wow. hell of a play by hughes.

  156. King George says:

    Yes, yes. That will work.

  157. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Phil can phield.

  158. Electric nunez says:

Wish hughes had that 2009 cutter now.

  159. RetroRob says:

Okay, high strikeout player AB. Unfortunately he also can hit the ball 450 feet.

  160. David N says:

    One more, Phil.

  161. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

  162. Big K, Phil.

    One more out here.

  163. jjyank (Phil Phucking Hugheslladay) says:

BIG K there, Phil! ONE MOAR OUT

  164. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Terrible pitch. Phil got lucky.

  165. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

  166. Pat D says:

    Hughes so cool.

  167. Cy Pettitte says:

Phil fucking Hughes! balls of steel.

  168. Hans Moleman says:

  169. Don't Get Phelps Up says:

    Sit down, Phelpsie.

  170. stanley a says:

  171. flamingo says:

  172. The Real Greg says:

I take back a bit of what I said before. Hughes showed me something there

  173. HughesPhanInBeantown says:

    Hell yeah, Philbert

  174. Well done, Phil.

But stop getting into these spots. Sooner or later, it will kill you.

  175. Joe F says:

    And Hughes is wonderful.

  176. jjyank (Phil Phucking Hugheslladay) says:

Bravo, Phil. Second and third, no outs, and NO RUNS!

Come on offense, spot him something to work with.

  177. Electric nunez says:

Hughes has a horseshoe up his ass.

  178. Hummingbird S. says:

nice freaking escape… but seriously have Phelps up in the next inning.

  179. handtius says:

Fucking Phil!!! He’s taken some magic classes and is now a licensed magician.

  180. David N says:

Phil giving Orioles fans a taste of what RISPfail feels like. I approve.

  181. King George says:

Wow, they had a 80% chance of scoring once there and didn’t. Let’s go, offense!

  182. RetroRob says:

A very Yankee-like inning for the Orioles.

    Good job.

  183. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

You guys have no phaith. I BELIEVE IN PHIL HUGHES!!!

I posted that with 2nd and 3rd and no out.

  184. ItWasaThing says:

Wow. Way to work out of that Phillip. Not on his A game tonight, but showing brass balls, getting out of jams.

  185. VinRae says:

5-6 shutout innings from Hughes, everyone will definitely take that, yes?

  186. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

I wish Samsung still aired this commercial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V40oo4kkzHg

  187. stuart a says:

The Orioles are even more incompetent then the Yanks and that is hard to do.

why would anyone throw Granderson anything but an offspeed pitch ever?

man granderson looks worse the narod and again that is hard to do.

the offense running on all cylinders again tonight for the yanks…

get ready for the rip your cap routine… this offense is putrid……..

  188. Monterowasdinero says:

    Phil says RISPECT ME!!!!

  189. Hall and Nokes says:

Time for runs! Five of them this inning.

  190. jjyank (Phil Phucking Hugheslladay) says:

  191. Hummingbird S. says:

  192. Excellent start to the inning. Plate this run.

  193. HughesPhanInBeantown says:

    Baseball Player!

  194. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

  195. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

  196. King George says:

    That a boy, Jayson!

  197. Max says:

If the Yanks make the ALCS…

is it a 2-3-2 format with the Yanks hosting 1,2 and 6,7 if necessary?

  198. stanley a says:

  199. David N says:

    Nice start by Nix.

Score him with all due speed.

  200. tyrone sharpton says:

Hughes pitches to the game, ala Jack Morris. Feeling good about this game. I’ll get up off my knees now.

  201. Electric nunez says:

    Jeter sucks

    -Pete Rose

    • RkyMtnYank says:

eh, he just Jeter wouldn’t catch his record, which would be amazing if he did.

    • RetroRob says:

Rose so loves having that all-tiime hit record, which is understandable. He stuck around several years just to get it. He’s had Jeter on his list as someone who might potentially take him down, but then Jeter seemed to be slowing down in 2010, allowing Rose to rest. Then Jeter goes out and bangs out 216 hits at 38, and suddenly Rose needs to take ambien at night.

  202. flamingo says:

    Some AB.

  203. ItWasaThing says:

I feel like an absolute beatdown of Saunders could begin at any moment.

  204. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

Jeets with one hell of an AB here!

  205. Don't Get Phelps Up says:

Jeter’s had a really good AB so far.

  206. stanley a says:

Really good at-bat by Jeter, regardless of outcome. Although I’d prefer if it ended with “in play (runs)”.

  207. The Real Greg says:

Whatever the outcome, A heck of an at bat.

  208. David N says:

If nothing else, Jeter is really making Saunders work here. That can only be a good thing.

  209. Electric nunez says:

This guy has nothing to put jeter away with.

  210. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

    11+ pitches, DAMN!

  211. jjyank (Phil Phucking Hugheslladay) says:

    What a battle here.

  212. handtius says:

damn jete! 12 pitches thus far.

  213. ItWasaThing says:

Are Saunders slack jawed yokel facial expressions reminiscent of John Lackey to anyone else?

  214. David N says:

  215. CT Yankee says:

That bat needs to be buried.

  216. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

You’re a bitch, Jeter, just retire already.

  217. Electric nunez says:

Got him up to 43 good job.

  218. Hummingbird S. says:

unfortunate, but that was a great AB.. might have seem more pitches on that AB than Granderson will in the whole game

    • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

I can almost guarantee that’s a true statement. Grandy probably gets 3 more ABs…probably going to see at most ten pitches between the 3.

  219. handtius says:

still, a damn good at bat. drive up that pitch count!

  220. forensic says:

I don’t care if it was 13 pitches, he should get no congratulations for that.

    Sincerely, Tim McCarver

  221. The Troll says:

Great AB, but the runner wasn’t even advanced. All said, it was an 80% failure.

  222. flamingo says:

Pitch count not as pretty as it was a batter ago.

  223. Hummingbird S. says:

top of the strikezone is only good for Saunders… fuck this ump

  224. Pat D says:

Hughes didn’t get that pitch in the first inning.

  225. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

    Ichiro go fuck yourself.

  226. Havok9120 says:

See, that high strike to Ichiro ticks me off. Hughes has not been getting the high call. Very odd.

  227. RetroRob says:

Really? Saunders strikes out Jeter and Ichiro?

  228. handtius says:

someone needs to speak with this ump. i don’t mind the zone if it’s the same for both sides. it most definitely isn’t.

  229. stanley a says:

They’re gonna strand the leadoff double aren’t they?

  230. Electric nunez says:

    Serious need a fair umpire.

  231. Monterowasdinero says:

Who will pinch hit for Grandy to win tonight’s game?

  232. ItWasaThing says:

    That one stings.

  233. David N says:

Too much RISPfail. Who’d have thought?

  234. Joe Saunders just struck out the side, with 2 RHB to boot.

    That’s ridiculous.

  235. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Saunders strikes out the side. Seriously awful.

  236. Pat D says:

Here we go again. Can’t we get a fucking blowout for once?

  237. JobaWockeeZ says:

It’s quickly becoming Ibanez or die.

  238. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

  239. Hummingbird S. says:

    this offense is awful

    • Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

Do you actually believe that they’re awful? They were 4 runs behind Texas for most runs in the league. If they’re awful, what does that make the rest of the team in the league?

  240. flamingo says:

Saunders just struck out the side. Saunders.

  241. The Real Greg says:

    Anger starting to rise here.

  242. Karl Krawfid says:

Would one of these sorry as fucks sit on a breaking ball?

  243. Eddard says:

Were these guys watching Jayson Nix hit? He was aggressive early in the count. Ichiro just sits there every time, strike 1 strike 2 and then you swing at the pitcher’s pitch. Texiera got a bad strike 1 call but then did the same thing on strike 2. BE AGGRESSIVE!

  244. Captain Gift Basket says:

How the eff did this team make it to the playoffs? Effin’ choke jobs

  245. CountryClub says:

It’s only 3 innings, so things can turn around. But I don’t want to hear anything about them tipping their caps to Saunders. He is leaving pitches to hit all over the place. They’re just not doing anything with them.

But I think they’ll get to him.

  246. SammySosasBleachingCream says:

  247. Hall and Nokes says:

Come on guys, maybe he stopped being a 5 K/9 pitcher overnight

  248. stuart a says:

their offense is actually worse then any adjective.

they are so incompetent it is staggering.

tex has about 15 rbis or less in the playoffs for the yanks in 4 years…

swinging at balls all over the place…ichiro doing jack also….

it isibanez, jeter, and the 7 blind mice….

  249. CUYanks says:

Hey, Yankees only stranded runner on second, no outs. Orioles stranded 2nd and 3rd, no outs. Not a bad trade.

  250. bill says:

how come people can’t score runs this series? I guess good ups to pitching?!?

  251. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie, and fuck Joe Saunders because he’s a fucking awful piece of shit pitcher who should be getting demolished but the Yankee offense is garbage.

  252. flamingo says:

Anyone in this thread realize there are still six innings left?

    • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

Nope. You didn’t hear, games are over as soon as people start getting antsy.

      • Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

It’s a new rule for the 2012 postseason instituted by Selig. They rushed it in for this year instead of expanded replay.

The technology isn’t perfectly mature yet, but they basically have an MLB intern crawl through sports blogs and as soon as the commenters reach a certain Antsy Quotient threshold, the game is called.

    • Captain Gift Basket says:

Sorry, I don’t smoke dope and just chill out like you zen fans.

    • OMG! Bagels! says:

This is every game thread. You have to leave for about an hour and come back, otherwise it’s just the same post over and over again.

  253. handtius says:

4th inning folks. relax. we all knew this would be tough and saunders has been pitching good lately (shutting down texas in a must win). they got time.

  254. SammySosasBleachingCream says:

What the fuck with Phil and the walks?

  255. Pinedas' Colada says:

If we’re going to advance to the ALCS, how can we hit against the possible likes of Verlander, Schrezer and Fister? Wake the fuck up, Yankees!

  256. The umpire molests collies says:

    Come on hughes pitch.

  257. Enough with the lead-off walks already. Holy shit Phil.

  258. your mom says:

Come on Phil, no lead-of runners please. Especially when you haven’t given up the requisite HR.

  259. Hummingbird S. says:

Please get Phelps up.. this might be Hughes last inning. He looks terrible.

  260. Don't Get Phelps Up says:

That’s the most productive thing Matt Wieters has done all series.

  261. stanley a says:

Hughes has walked the leadoff man in three of his four innings pitched. When you play with fire, you get burned.

  262. Brooklyn Nets says:

    Phil Hughes arrives today.

  263. King George says:

    Phil, settle. Find the zone.

  264. jim norton says:

baseball, hot dogs, yogurt mouth, and chevrolet…

  265. The Troll says:

Wow. Just when you think this offense CAN’T get any worse . . . How can these guys suck THIS much? For the past decade or so, I seem to have finally weathered the sting of a non-existent October offense . . . Since I know that they’re going to royally suck, I just don’t give a hoot when they do. With that said, though, why does the same exact story continue to play out postseason after postseason? Too many cerebral players and non-contact hitters?

  266. CUYanks says:

Any consideration for dropping that to get Thome on base?

  267. Pinedas' Colada says:

Let’s not go there again, Phil.

  268. Hummingbird S. says:

that hanging changeup or whatever he calls it… that’s not a good place to throw that shit

  269. Fieding culbreth wets the bed says:

    A gidp please

  270. Pinedas' Colada says:

    16 MORE OUTS!

  271. No two-out letdown here.

  272. Freddy's Mom says:

I’m not gonna be commenting much tonight but I will say this: it seems to me the ump so far hates us. If I’m Girardi I’d already be thinking about who to bring in for Hughes, these leadoff walks are asking for it. Get Chavez and Ibanez in ASAP. Jeez, frustrating…

  273. King George says:

Man, Hughes is not getting these calls at all.

  274. youngmanalex says:

man we got so lucky that stayed in the park.

  275. CountryClub says:

    This ump has two zones

  276. Uh, that is a two-out letdown, Phil.

Just be glad that was Wieters running, and not someone with speed.

  277. Fieding culbreth wets the bed says:

Come on hughes feel that horseshoe

  278. stanley a says:

    Ryan Flaherty, yup.

  279. Hummingbird S. says:

beautifully played by Swisher… Hughes looks done. Take him out

  280. CUYanks says:

Does anyone find it at least a little off-putting that Cal refers to every player by his first name?

  281. Wil Nieves Number 1 Fan says:

Phil needs to phind his phcommand.

  282. Fieding culbreth wets the bed says:

    Fuck you fielding

  283. Don't Get Phelps Up says:

I wish Hughes was getting the strike zone Saunders got.

  284. Cy Pettitte says:

Hughes is getting no calls at all, can’t keep pitching from behind in the count to every hitter

  285. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

Oh come on the 1-1 was clearly a strike!!

  286. Monterowasdinero says:

    Phil’s changeup is AA level.

  287. RkyMtnYank says:

Smoltz calls the ball a centimeter off the corner, brilliant!!!

  288. Marcus says:

If the MLB gameday pitch locations are at all accurate, Phil is getting squeezed repeatedly.

  289. Cy Pettitte says:

    big time pitching by Phi!!

  290. Joe F says:

Hughes needs to settle down though. This won’t happen every inning.

  291. Fieding culbreth wets the bed says:

    Phil huge not hughes.

  292. jjyank (Phil Phucking Hugheslladay) says:

Hughes grinding this out. Nice work.

  293. VinRae says:

    But please enough of that.

  294. RetroRob says:

Nice job in the tough spots tonight by Phil.

  295. handtius says:

phil throwing some filth out there! so nasty.

  296. stanley a says:

    Phuck yeah!

  297. Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle AKA True Yankee(TM) says:

Man…Phil has been terrible tonight. Look at all those runs he’s given up!!

  298. Don't Get Phelps Up says:

The Orioles are a bunch of overpaid chokers!

  299. your mom says:

Good job Phil. Can’t expect to wiggle out of these situations everytime though. NEED SOME FUCKING OFFENSE!!!

  300. Knoxvillain says:

Shaky start from Hughes so far. But he’s doing his job. I’m very surprised and very satisfied.

  301. David N says:

Not that I’m complaining about the results of Hughes’ pitching, but…where’s my blood pressure medication?
