- The Yankees came home to the Bronx for the final three games of the regular season on Monday, and they hammered Clay Buchholz in the opener against the Red Sox. Raul Ibanez was the late-inning hero in Tuesday’s win, then they blew Boston out in the season finale. The Yankees clinched the AL East and the best overall record in the league on the final day of the season.
- The Orioles beat the Rangers in the wildcard play-in game on Friday, setting up an intra-divison ALDS matchup. The Yankees took the series opener last night behind CC Sabathia and a big late-inning rally.
- Injury News: Mariano Rivera (knee) threw off flat ground in August but is not a consideration for the postseason. Brett Gardner (elbow) has been cleared by doctors and has no restrictions moving forward. Jayson Nix (hip) worked out late last week. Top pitching prospect Manny Banuelos (elbow) had Tommy John surgery last week and will miss all of next season.
- Both Gardner and Nix were healthy enough to make the ALDS roster over Andruw Jones, Casey McGehee, and others. Derek Lowe made the cut over Ivan Nova and Cody Eppley. Andy Pettitte will start Game Two while Hiroki Kuroda will start Game Three.
- On the minor league side, the Yankees hired former top prospect Drew Henson as a coach. They also re-signed RHP Matt Daley while signing LHP Abel Mora. LHP Justin Thomas was outrighted to Triple-A. OF Zoilo Almonte will play winter ball.
- OF Tyler Austin, C Gary Sanchez, and OF Mason Williams all cracked Baseball America’s top 20 Low-A South Atlantic League prospects list. The Yankees were shut out of the Short Season NY-Penn League list, however.
- The Yankees secured the 29th overall pick in the 2013 draft, though they could also forfeit that pick as free agent compensation this winter.
- MLB finalized new eight-year broadcasting agreements with FOX and TBS that will more than double the revenue given to each team. Derek Jeter topped jersey sales for the third straight year.
- Hal Steinbrenner said jobs are not on the line pending the team’s finish in the postseason.

10! CC pitched like an ace. The best lineup in baseball wore down Hammel and eventually came through against a good closer. Andy is on the mound tonight against Chen with a chance to essentially put the series away. I don’t see the Yanks losing 3 straight playoff games at YS. It’d be nice to win this series in 3 or 4 and save CC for Game 1 of the ALCS because it’s looking like it’ll be against Verlander.
Glad CC is up to step three in the “Ace” department;
1) Go 7 or more innings…”Not an Ace”
2) Go 7 or more innings, leave with the lead…”Almost an Ace”
3) Go 8-plus, make the other team look weak…”Like an Ace”

anyone know when they are going to announce the game times for wed? this is pretty dumb that they haven’t done this yet.
Called MLB office a few minutes ago and they said sorry for the delay. Will announce start time this AM and yes it is ridiculous.
Finally returned back to a 9 from the 8 i’ve been placing since late-July.
Why is Manny gone all of next year if he just had TJS? I thought Joba was throwing after 6 or 7 months…couldn’t we expect him in July or August so he could also go to Fall Ball and log some innings?
Joba is a freak of nature. No one comes back from TJS that quickly.
Joba is atypical. His pain threshold and recovery time should not be used as a yardstick.
Hopefully, Manny is also a quick healer, but it’s understandable that they would use a conservative estimate when gauging how long he’ll be out. Given his status as their top pitching prospect, there’s no doubt they’ll be uber-conservative with how they proceed in his comeback.

Can’t help but feel good about where the Yankees are right now, that would be a (10) but going forward and with a mostly down year for the minor leagues and especially with the news of Banuelos going down for 2013 and we probably won’t see him in the majors till late 2014/2015 now its a (4). Still a 7 is not terrible I suppose.
I’m not as low as 7 but everything you say is valid. And add to that the new television contract has the potential to be a long term negative for the Yankees. That much extra revenue means other teams spend more. If 189 is a temporary situation than no problem. But if permanent other teams payrolls will be catching up
they just need to get below $189 for one season. So, yes, it’s temporary
I think going unter 189 for just one season is unlikely. Either they are willing to take the benefits of being under 189 – then they should be there permanently – or they pursue a “just win and the money will be there” strategy – then they don’t have to drop below 189 at all.
My confidence in the Yanks is an 8.
My confidence in them playing tonight is a 4.

Yeah, 40/50% chance of rain all night. It sounds like the type of rain they would normally play in. But, I dont think they’ll start the game in the rain since they had no interest in doing that last night.

I gave ‘em a nine, the highest score I’ve ever voted for in the confidence poll. The line-up is awesome, the bench is solid. The Yankees’ starting four is the equal or superior to any other team in the post-season. Even the bullpen inspires confidence… Mostly.
Sadly, I was right in my prediction of McLouth stepping it up in the post-season. At least Jonesy didn’t do too much damage at the plate.
I am actually feeling good about Game 2, so much so to even predict that the Bronx Bombers will win tonight rather convincingly 6-3, with most of the Yankee runs coming before the fifth inning.

Looking at this season, I’d be at a 9 or 9.5. Despite Mike pointing out the Yankees going 4-6 when winning game 1 of the ALDS, this is not those other 10 Yankee teams, nor is the matchup the same.* I feel good about this series and the team’s chances to make it far in the post season. Longer term, if they choose to chase the $189M salary budget, I’m less confident and voted an 8 overall. A major piece in fielding a winning team with a reasonalbe budget is inexpensive (and productive) pitching, and TNSTAAPP. And while I acknowledge that $189M in salary is hardly reasonable, as it would still be the highest in baseball, with all of the high salaried players under contract and on the verge of new contracts, it’ll mean the Yankees must find inexpensive production in other places.
* This is why I hate when announcers site stats from years past. Anything more than this season and perhaps last regarding how a player or team does in a certain situation is almost meaningless. I really don’t caer what Ichiro did in his last playoff series (as an example). It means absolutely nothing now.
The Dodgers may be the highest in 2014. They are already at $192m next year.

If I’m voting my confidence level for the next 3.5 weeks or so, I’ll go 9. At this point who cares about Long Term trend or who dominated the Sally league…I’m a 9 through the canyon of heroes.

I’m at an eight.
8 up from 7, the team is coming together with its health, pitching and lineup has gotten deeper. I probably could go a bit higher in the 8 scale if Arod would bring his bat to the game. I can not figure the problem. It could be physical with an inability to rotate the hips and lack of power. The fielding has been shored up with Ichiro in the OF and in the number 2 slot.

I like where the team is TODAY and I would give them a 9 BUT when you factor in, the future roster, payroll, and the AAA players, this whole picture becomes very cloudy. For tomorrow, I give them a 5. I can’t honestly see how you give them a 8 or 9 knowing that there are some serious issues about to take place.
What keeps me positive about the future is the fact that you do not need the highest payroll in baseball to win. There are a few teams that competed for the playoffs at the end which had low payrolls. Its about the development and trades. And the stones to put these kids in the lineup at or about the appropriate time in their development. The Yanks will always have the cash to do what they want to do according to the CBA especially after 2014.
Maybe I’m still a little buzzed from the 5-run inning Kool Aid last night (and admitttedly stopping on SportsCenter three times today at the top of the hour to rewatch the coverage….
But I am up to a 9 from my normal 8. Last time I was at a 9 the Yankees were in the middle of their massive tear through the NL in June. My 9 before that, they won a ring. Jus sayin…
