Game 161: Rain drops and division titles

By

(Photo via CookAndSonBats.MLBlogs.com)

The Yankees can clinch the AL East crown tonight, but they’ll need some help. The postseason eliminated Rays will first need to beat the Orioles again, and then Mother Nature will have to chill out with all this rain. It hasn’t been pouring in New York, but it’s been raining on-and-off since about noon and the forecast says it’ll stop sometime Thursday morning. With two important games to play between now and then, expect the Yankees and Red Sox to wait this one out as long as possible. Here’s the starting nine…

SS Derek Jeter
RF Nick Swisher
3B Alex Rodriguez
1B Mark Teixeira
2B Robinson Cano
Russell Martin
CF Curtis Granderson
DH Eduardo Nunez
LF Ichiro Suzuki

RHP David Phelps

Tonight’s game is schedule to start a little after 7pm ET, but who knows with the weather. The game can be seen on YES.

    Brutal.

  • John

Kick ass. Pop champagne. And get some O’s.

  • The Real Greg

I hope this moment isn’t too big for Phelps. He has shown nerves on a few occasions this season.

So Pedroia wants to change the culture? Throw a running 2 seam fastball in on his hands and we’ll see if he’s singing the same tune.

  • VT Yankee Fan

Weather radar looks OK after 7:15.

  • Get Phelps Up

I hope Nunez DHing means Jones wont make the playoff roster.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

This is the right lineup and the right starting pitcher. Joe is finally making the right moves. Nunez and Phelps > Jones and Nova. Joe is showing some progress.

    • http://RIVERAVEBLUES JOHN7371

      agreed!!!

      • The Troll

        agreed!!!

    • http://RIVERAVEBLUES JOHN7371

      agreed!!!

    • Chilango

      Yes!

    • Robinson Tilapia

      Now we’re fucked.

  • Buck Showalter

Ellsbury and Pedroia back in the lineup. Bobby must have gotten my voicemail.

    • The Real Greg

Buck and Bobby probably don’t like each other. Bobby beat Buck in the 1999 NLDS which led to Buck getting kicked out of Arizona

  • Mike

They’ll probably play, but who in MLB decides rainouts/postponements ? I’ve heard mixed results on that. Some say the home team, some say the crew chief umpire, some say MLB front office, etc.

    • Al santo

Home team until first pitch is thrown. Then umpires decide about rain delays or postponements

      • Mike

Is that throughout the whole year? Because I think I heard if it’s the 2nd half of the year or if it’s a team’s last trip to that stadium, then MLB decides it.

  • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Hey guys is this thing starting on time?

  • http://yanksgoyard.com/ Joe F

Lets clinch. Even though I’m going tomorrow, I don’t mind because I have playoff tickets. But I need us to clinch so I can get them!

    • Mike

I’m going tomorrow too. I was at yesterday’s game. Part of a 12 game plan. Also going to the opening game of the playoffs whenever that is.

      • http://yanksgoyard.com/ Joe F

How do you know which game you got for the playoffs? I bought WC tickets, yet have no clue.

        • Mike

I bought the Yankees first home game of the ALDS (assuming they make it there)

  • Pasta Stumbling Sojo

Hey Tom Riddle (and others), I wanted to finish that conversation yesterday about the Sox starting Zach Stewart.

Did Valentine or anyone on the Sox actually acknowledge that they wanted to line up Buchholz against the Yanks? It’s one thing to play hard to play the spoiler, but it seems kind of ridiculous to publicly acknowledge that you’re trying to help one team and hurt another.

(Of course, it’s hilarious that Buchholz ended up having an even worse start than Stewart.)

    • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I don’t know if he came out and said it, however what other reason would he have?

      • Pasta Stumbling Sojo

Yeah, I mean I don’t see another reason, but I’ve never heard of a team explicitly trying to spoil only one team’s playoff run at the expense of spoiling another’s. Usually teams just try hard, they don’t rearrange their pitchers to be favorable to a particular team, especially taking the step of starting a shitty pitcher who has no reason to be in their rotation.

    • jjyank

I don’t know, but I really fucking hope so.

Also, who the hell is Tom Middle?

      #plouffyneverdies

      • jjyank

Damn, sorry about that. My internet is wonky today.

    • jjyank

No idea, but I sure hope so.

Also, who the hell is Tom Riddle?

      #plouffyneverdies

  • Zack

I do have some reservations about Phelps but at this point Nova has shown he can’t be trusted.
Let’s go out there and clinch tonight!

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

Playing through a broken finger when you’re in last place is just stupid. You aren’t setting any examples for next year. Nobody will remember it.

    • Captain_Turbo

      Agreed. Stupid Pedroia being stupid.

  • The Real Greg

    Exactly what I feared

  • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

    Well Nova coulda done that.

    • http://yanksgoyard.com/ Joe F

      This.

    • Preston

BUT PHELPS IS A BIG GAME PITCHER!!! I really think there is something physically wrong with Nova and that’s why they went with Phelps. Hopefully he settles down, and can gie us a QS, and hopefully Lester can suck like he has the rest of the season.

  • Mike

    Get in Nova now!! /sarcasm

  • Karl Krawfid

    More 2 strike fastballs please.

  • Captain_Turbo

    Pull Phelps now!

  • Rocky Road Redemption

    OH MY GOSHZ OVERREACTIONS!!!!

  • The Real Greg

He’s shown it before this year to cower in big spots.

    • jjyank

I’d love to see a fight between you and Eddard.

      • The Real Greg

I’m not saying it was the wrong choice. I just don’t think Phelps is a slam dunk better choice.

        • jjyank

I was really just making fun of Eddard’s “Big Game David Phelps” nonsense.

  • WhittakerWalt

See, all you “get Phelps in the rotation” guys? Phelps ain’t all that.

    • Chilango

I think everyone knows that. Who would be a better alternative to Phelps?

      • WhittakerWalt

He’s probably the best choice at this point. I just think it’s funny how many people acted like he’d be a sure thing.

        • Robinson Tilapia

          We cloned Eddard?

  • Zack

Not a good start at all.

  • VT Yankee Fan

Sterling is talking about Lester like he is Cy Young. He’s given up 3 or more runs in his last 7 games.

  • The Troll

8 Lester shut-out innings. Anyone? Somebody? Any takers anywhere? I’ve got 8 innings of a dominant Lester here hot off the bench!

  • Nice Scheister of Doom

Still the right choice, over the past two months and 2012 period, Phelps > Nova. Nova has looked awful, and two runs is a small margin. Yanks got this,

  • Captain_Turbo

Jeez, how did the second run score? I missed it.

    • Zack

      Sac fly.

    • Mike

      Sac fly

    • Chilango

      sac fly

    • Pasta Stumbling Sojo

Sac fly sac fly sac fly

    • Chip

      Magic

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

Lester will struggle. Last time we faced him he walked everybody and we let him off the hook. That won’t happen this time.

  • Nice Scheister of Doom

    Pasta diving Troll.

  • Pasta Stumbling Sojo

Wow, the stadium looks empty. I know it’s raining, but with the division race on the line?

  • Get Phelps Up

    A-Bloop

  • WhittakerWalt

    Another non-RBI hit. This team.

    • The Real Greg

Why are you blaming the team?

      • WhittakerWalt

It’s just one of those things that’s been frustrating/mystifying me all year. I wasn’t blaming anybody.
Jesus, do you get a merit badge at the end of the year?

        • Chip

          Congressional Badge of Honor

  • Nice Scheister of Doom

So many hits w/ RISP with no runs. Boooo!

  • Chilango

    Get.Lester.NOW. Patience

  • WhittakerWalt

    Fucking Tex.

    • Chip

Would you prefer we still had Pearce?

      • Robinson Tilapia

        Pearce had the better meme.

      • WhittakerWalt

No, that’s idiotic. Tex is a good player and they need him in the lineup.
Now allow me to be annoyed at the DP that JUST FUCKING HAPPENED, thanks.

  • Nice Scheister of Doom

    DFA Teix.

  • Budweiser and popeyes chichen

    Tex need better than that.

  • Chilango

    Tex WRISP/2out 52 AB .130/.266

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

      Horrible.
But there was only 1 out.

    • stuart a

      there was only 1 out….

    • Pasta Stumbling Sojo

So what you’re saying is that it’s not enough AB’s to mean anything?

  • BigBlueAL

Glad the hottest/best hitter on the team is batting 5th tonight.

    • Mike

      #BinderJoe

  • Thud

JAMES SHIELDS IS THROWING A PERFECTO IN TAMPA!!!??!!??!?@?!?!!??!

  • stuart a

another dominating AB by Arod.. does he know they throw the ball inside to him? He is a joke…If the mental case does zilch in the playoffs the fans should be all over him…

tex looks like he is in perfect form with the GIDP…

    • Get Phelps Up

if the yankees clinch….will we throw a parade….?

    • Hugh

Ah, how lovely to see you again, Stuart.

    • Captain_Turbo

A-Rod’s usually pretty good about hitting the inside pitch. The hand injury is obviously still an issue.

    • jjyank

I love that now Cano is hot, you seamlessly switch back to A-Rod.

      ….at least you adapt with the times…we should give you a raise…and a parade….

    • WhittakerWalt

      GO SOX, right stewie?

    • Robinson Tilapia

I’ll take a dunk single. Wasn’t thrilled by the DP. Shit happens.

  • Pasta Stumbling Sojo

Anyone have a way to look up the rate the Yankees get hits w/RISP without scoring a run compared to the league average? I’m guessing it’s about the same despite what a lot of people say, but I don’t know how to find that stat.

  • Captain_Turbo

It’s okay, they’re going to score 9 runs next inning.

  • Chilango

Let’s go Dave it’s a AAA lineup. Attack.

  • Budweiser and popeyes chichen

    Arod old

  • Rocky Road Redemption

Pedro “Ty Cobb” Ciriaco at it again.

    • jjyank

Holy shit, Ciriaco stabbed a guy?

      • Rocky Road Redemption

At least he didn’t steal laptops.

        • jjyank

We punished the lap top thief for his crimes already :)

  • Chip

    I hate this guy

  • Mike

If Ibanez or Jones was out there, that’s a double

  • Budweiser and popeyes chichen

Anyone else want to hit ciriaco with a baseball bat?

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

Phelps has settled down nicely. These guys have to make Lester pay. He walked 7 men last time he faced us and we still managed to lose. Cano, Nunez and Ichiro should be our spark tonight.

    • Robinson Tilapia

By the end of the night, you’re going make some of us root for Phelps to be mauled by tigers if you keep this up.

  • Kramerica Industries

I’m not sure I care for this shitty beginning of the game for Phelps.

  • Captain_Turbo

    Robbie dinger. Calling it.

    • Robinson Tilapia

No expiration date on that, right?

      • Captain_Turbo

        LOL… yes, I meant sometime today…

  • Rocky Road Redemption

I’m leaving the blog…unless we’re winning it will be quite unpleasant.

    • jjyank

Welcome to the world of game threads.

    • Captain_Turbo

Aw, come on… stick around… it’ll be fun when the real trolls come out of the woodwork…

  • Hugh

Watching on MLB Gameday. Seems like the strike zone is all over the place…

    • Chip

Third pitch to Martin would have hit a lefty

  • teddy

if cano was batting 4th, yanks have a run

    • jjyank

      FALLACY

      But, jesting aside, yeah, fallacy.

    • Chip

Not necessarily, that wasn’t exactly a deep fly ball

  • Pasta Stumbling Sojo

To be fair, it’s hard for giraffes to bend all the way down to the ground with their long necks.

  • The Troll

Why TF is Cano batting 5th? Same goes for Ichiro at 9 . . . Why would you tamper with what was working? I no gets.

    • Captain_Turbo

Welcome to the world of Joey Binders…

      • The Troll

It goes beyond Joey Binders, it has to. It’s just pure idiocy. Take away ABs from two of the hottest hitters on your team. Yeah, that’s a great idea! All because of an unproven Teixera? That’s serious horse shit.

        • Chip

You talk like Tex is some AAAA shlub and that Ichiro is Ichiro! against lefties. I understand the whole “he’s hot” thing but in reality Lester has been tough on lefties this year and righties have destroyed him so you might as well load up righties and try to get some rallies going against him.

        • Captain_Turbo

I’m guessing it’s the matchups… I think they said Cano was 0 for 10 against Lester (did I hear that right?)… not sure about Suzuki though.

        • Robinson Tilapia

Recovering from injury. Not unproven…..unless we’re talking Kaneoka Texeira here.

  • Chilango

Granderson swings at ball 4 and winds up on 3d. Get him IN

  • Kramerica Industries

    Well, score this run.

  • Cy Pettitte

    Nunie making things happen!

  • Get Phelps Up

I hope Peter Gammons was watching that.

  • jjyank

I’ll take it. Thanks, Sox SS of the future.

  • Kramerica Industries

And there is that run. That was a hot-shot tough play. Well done Eduardo.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

Nunie just makes things happen with his bat. Now watch him steal 2nd. What a ballplayer.

  • Robinson Tilapia

    Jose Iglesias, everyone.

  • Chilango

Stonefingers gets a base hit not an E? wow

  • Pasta Stumbling Sojo

King Eduardo: everything he touches turns to Error.

  • Captain_Turbo

    I’ll take it.

  • Mike N

Hopefully Phelps will stay settled in.

  • Austin Aunelowitzky

Oooh, down early. How does Phelpsy look?

    • Chip

Average against the big leaguers, dominant against the minor leaguers

    • Robinson Tilapia

Better. Classic couple of doubles to start off the game which wound up scoring. Seems to have very much settled down since.

I’ve defended better pitchers than David Phelps for rough first innings, so it’d be hypocritical to get on him too much. Don’t dig a deeper hole and hope the Yanks hit Lester tonight.

      • Austin Aunelowitzky

        thanks gents

  • jjyank

    Dingleberry.

  • WhittakerWalt

Does anyone besides John Sterling call it “A-B-C ball?” Or is that just one of his annoying things, like “grounds rule double?”

  • Kramerica Industries

2nd time through beginning this inning.

    Score some more runs.

  • Captain_Turbo

Just like that Phelps. Four more of those.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

And those predicting doom for Phelpsy can breathe easy. He’s in a groove now. If the offense can put a couple more on the board this is in the bag.

    • Get Phelps Up

And I thought I liked Phelps way too much.

  • Austin Aunelowitzky

Need the Yanks to win tonight and O’s lose. I can’t miss the debate tomorrow night!

    • jjyank

Haha I have the same dilemma. I really wanna watch the debate, but there’s no way I can pass on the game if the Yankees haven’t clinched the division.

    • Captain_Turbo

Future elections will be decided by baseball…

    • Pasqua

I guarantee you that there will be more surprises in the baseball game than in the debate.

    • Pasqua

I guarantee you that there will be more surprises in the baseball game than in the debate.

  • Cy Pettitte

past a diving Ciriaco? is that even possible?

    and fucking Chris Davis.

  • Kramerica Industries

Chris Davis has homered now in six straight games.

  • Captain_Turbo

    O’s scored one. Stupid birds…

  • Get Phelps Up

I’m worried about Swish hitting too much, you guys.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

      Heh.

  • Chilango

    Swish is on fire.

  • Cy Pettitte

    Arod is crushing Lester.

  • Chilango

    ARod is 2-2 lol

  • Karl Krawfid

Steal on the leg kick this time A-Rod.

  • Kramerica Industries

No double plays this time, Tex.

    • Robinson Tilapia

Eddard might as well have said that.

  • Mike N

Why the fuck is that asshole Pedroia wearing eyeblack at night?

  • Bartolo’s Colon

i really hate tex right now

  • Karl Krawfid

  • Cy Pettitte

this is like some kind of sick joke with Teix.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Joe G’s lineup moves are working out nicely.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

Teixera is a rally killer tonight.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Four outs for Tex tonight.

    Wasteful.

  • BigBlueAL

I want to say again, great job by Girardi having Cano bat 5th. Brilliant stuff.

  • Hugh

You have got to be kidding me.

  • Nice Scheister of Doom
  • Hugh

You have got to be kidding me.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

way to bat cano 5th, how about arod is 2-2 with risp and no rbi’s

  • teddy

fire giradri, batting teix 4th pathetic

  • Chip

Ugh, Tex is not rewarding the faith right now

  • Beerandchicken

And why again has Joe the genius have Tex in the 4 hole?

    • Nice Scheister of Doom

      Da Binda!!11!!1

    • Hugh

Tex at 4 is a perfectly reasonable decision by the manager. Don’t blame him for a player’s (grotesque, abysmal, possibly season-ending) mistakes.

      • The Troll

When all the contributing factors are taken into consideration, it’s nearly 100% clear that Tex hitting clean-up is NOT the right move. I’d actually say that it’s not very reasonable whatsoever.

  • Captain_Turbo

We’re going to rally this inning. I feel it in my bones… no wait, that’s gin.

  • Terry Bollea

Really Tex? Two GIDPs? And really, Joe? Putting a player one day back from a 30-day injury in the 4 spot, and the hottest hitter on the team in the 5? Fucking idiot.

  • mt

I hope I am wrong but this is looking like a massive RISPFAIL game where if we do get a hit with RISP they of course don’t score a run.

I wish Arod could make solid contact at least once.

    • Hugh

Yeah. Stupid overpaid superstar not making outs.

  • Chilango

Tex bats 4th because he hit a HR last night? Or is he like .800 against Lester or what

  • Budweiser and popeyes chichen

    Balt 1
    Tampa 0

  • Mike N

    Ugh, Teix.

  • Budweiser and popeyes chichen

Maybe later they can pinchhit chavez in the 4 hole

  • Captain_Turbo

    Heh, almost fooled Saltamacchiato…

  • The Troll

Now, go ahead and take this with a grain of salt, but fudging the lineup by moving Teixera to 4 spot is inexcusable. Should they lose this game (KNOCK ON WOOD!!!), then the loss lies solely on Girardi’s shoulders. It was a stupid move that should NOT have been enacted. Just ONCE I’d like to see the MT25 bat somewhere towards the bottom of the order . . . . I thought that tonight would’ve been an EXCELLENT opportunity, but NOOOOOOOO, Joey Binders doesn’t DARE listen to the Troll, does he?! Nobody EVER listens to the Troll!!!!!!!!!

    • Captain_Turbo

I’m pretty sure the loss will be on the players who failed to perform.

    • Cant believe they killed opie

Lester is still a very good pitcher if the sox trade him this winter it would do us a huge favor.

      • The Troll

I know Lester’s good. He always puts some form of fear into me when the Yankees face him, but, with that said, Girardi’s decision to slot in Teixera above Cano, Ichiro (and Granderson for that matter) is straight-up stupid. I still honestly believe that it’s because of his paycheck. He earns far too much to bat 7th or lower . . .

  • Mike N

    Loving Phelps right now!

  • Cy Pettitte

still don’t understand how Ciriaco killed the Yankees in so many games.

    • Austin Aunelowitzky

something to do with the big bang theory

  • Bartolo’s Colon

how in the world has ciriaco hurt us so much, dude swings at anything!

  • Kramerica Industries

    Phelps is settling in.

Once again, time to get some more runs.

  • Mick taylor

Please remind Tex Joe these are not the playoffs so he doesn’t have to choke

    • Bartolo’s Colon

good to see he’s in playoff form

    • The Troll

Hahahahaha. So true. I cannot wait to see what Teixera contributes come playoff time, whether it be 1 game or 15 . . . Having the MT25 back suddenly reminds me of my borderline disdain for him. I expected SOOOO much for him and he’s done nothing but get worse with each passing season.

  • Jersey Joe

C’mon Rays, we need you to channel last year’s magic!

  • Kramerica Industries

Why did Kay even go into the HR-sounding voice of “driven deeeeeeep” shit?

    Obvious foul ball.

    • http://yanksgoyard.com/ Joe F

      He trolls hard.

  • teddy

and then cano single, yanks be winning if giradri batting him 4th

    • Get Phelps Up

      Giradri.

      • MannyGeee

        Giraffey!

    • The Troll

Everyone else here will surely yell “FALLACY” (thanks to the inglorious asshole that is Greg), but I’m a have to go ahead and say this . . . You’re right, they would be winning. Why? Because Cano would’ve driven in at least one run each time up . . . There’s no fallacy there.

  • Cy Pettitte

wow was that a terrible AB

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

That was quite a horrible AB Russ.

  • Chip

And here come the, “he would have hit a run in!” comments

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Red Sox would have played the defense in the same exact spots and thrown the same exact sequence of pitches with men on the corners with one out as they did leading off an inning!

  • Cant believe they killed opie

    Grandy due

  • Greg

So the Yankees are 3-4 with RISP and they have only 1 run. Amazing.

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

And the hit that scored the run wasn’t even a hit, it was an error.

  • Pasta Stumbling Sojo

Chilango, that link you posted above doesn’t seem to have hits w/RISP without scoring a run. Does anyone know if/where you can find that stat?

    • The Real Greg

      I don’t think it exists.

  • Jersey Joe

With Gardner back, which is more likely?

    A:
    DH: Teixeira
    1B: Swisher
    RF: Ichiro
    LF: Gardner

    B:
    DH: Gardner (for rest)
    1B: Teixeira
    RF: Swisher
    LF: Ichiro

    C:
    DH: Ibanez
    1B: Teixeira
    RF: Swisher
    LF: Ichiro

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Why would you DH Tex? That takes A off the table. Gardner hasn’t had enough at-bats to warrant playing time in big games, so C by default.

    • Get Phelps Up

C, but with Chavez as the DH.

  • Kramerica Industries

This is playing out aggravating game right now. Turn that around soon, please.

  • Captain_Turbo

    A bit of weak-contact-itis going around…

  • Hugh

One run on seven hits in four innings is kind of hard to take.

  • Kramerica Industries

Seeing a AAAA schmuck like Miguel Gonzalez continuing to dominate games is extremely annoying.

  • Athenian

Double play Tex.. Good to have him back.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

not sure its a testament to phelps kay, just that nova was just about the worst sp in the league this year

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

Worst in the second half, maybe. He was aight before the All-Star break.

  • Kramerica Industries

I was about to say. You do not walk Jose fucken Iglesias.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

We’ve got two big game pitchers going for us tonight, Dave Phelps and James Shields. Both are doing their jobs but the offenses haven’t showed up. Ichiro needs to be the spark again to start the next inning.

  • Mike N

    Awesome, Phelpsy!

  • Hall and Nokes

I WANT MY NYY STEAK NOW!!!

    • Nice Scheister of Doom

IT’S MY MONEY AND I WANT IT NOW!

    • Mike N

Anybody eaten there? Is it good? They are opening a branch in midtown soon.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

for the love of god, score runs now.

  • VT Yankee Fan

I would have signed up for 2 runs thru 5 from Phelps.

    • MannyGeee

From anyone in this staff not named CC, actually, but I digress

  • Cant believe they killed opie

    This is our innning
    Yankee majic coming up.

  • Get Phelps Up

3-1 bunt is pretty dumb, but hey, it worked.

  • Cy Pettitte

Ichiro, teach Gardy how to do that.

  • dkidd

    gorgeous

    3-1 count!

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

Ichiro can do it all. Need a HR, he can hit 2. Need a bunt, he can lay down a perfect one. Now I’m sure Joe will have Jeter sacrifice.

  • Cant believe they killed opie

    This is our innning
    Yankee magic coming up

  • Leg-End

Looks like that One at Bat dude is coming to the plate shortly if your interested in watching it.

  • Nice Scheister of Doom

    Nine run inning please.

  • your mom

    8 hits, 1 run huh?

  • Cant believe they killed opie

    Please steal

  • Get Phelps Up

Ichiro needs to steal with Salty back there.

  • dkidd

    send him, please

  • The Real Greg

And 3-5 with RISP. Think about how illogical the numbers are.

    • Pasta Stumbling Sojo

I think it’s 3 for 6. Tex has grounded out 3 times with RISP.

  • MannyGeee

Oh no..l I thought they properly iced and stretched out Lester’s vagina before tonight’s game… For shame

  • Kramerica Industries

Shields throwing a gem so far.

    Score that man some runs.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

Now you see what the element of speed does to a pitcher. It takes him off his game. Ichy, Nunie and Gardy are key players going forward.

  • dkidd

way to change the culture, jon!

  • Bartolo’s Colon

better not take any chances with lester, bobby. bring in bucholz, he’s pretty fresh

    • Captain_Turbo

      Now that’s funny.

  • The Real Greg

So in what way do the baseball gods screw with Alex this time?

  • Cant believe they killed opie

    First pitch alex
    Fuck you

  • MannyGeee

RISPfail! Back after a night off yesterday

    • The Real Greg

The numbers dont suggest it. 3-7 with RISP is not fail but it is appraoching it.

      • MannyGeee

I was being sarcastic, but yeah. Getting close… I always felt this team always had a LOB issue, not specific to RISP… but that was the eye test. No numbers to support.

  • Chilango

Wish Girardi had the balls to sit ARod

    • Nice Scheister of Doom

      Stuart?

    • Klemy

      Sit Arod? What?

  • Kramerica Industries

    Holy shit Tex.

Roll over to short some more.

  • Mike N

    Ugh, Tex.

  • Cant believe they killed opie

    Get chavez up please

  • RkyMtnYank

Well at he couldn’t hit into a double play that time.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Well at least Robbie gets to hit with nobody on again.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

Joe Girardi is going to cost us this game because he hit his hottest hitter 9th and his 2nd hottest hitter 5th. Unreal. And Phelps is pitching a gem.

  • Nice Scheister of Doom

    Fuck!

  • Austin Aunelowitzky

If that was Alex they’d be throwing Reggie bars at him right now.

  • jon

jesus christ hit the ball anywhere other than directly to the shortstop

  • Cy Pettitte

good thing Robbie hasn’t had to face a lefty in an important spot tonight

  • Leg-End

Tex 4th really turned out good hey?

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    C’mon. What the Christ

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

    C’mon. What the Christ

  • MannyGeee

Nice of Tex to not hit into a DP that time… Oh wait.

  • spectra

Man I wish we could get so more small ball in here this is so AWESOME. I hate the hits over the wall that score runs, there so boring

  • UncleArgyle

Lucky for Tex there were already 2 outs. That would have been DP#3

  • Athenian

And Tex strikes again. Well done.

  • Terry Bollea

Tex is lucky that A-Rod made an out. Otherwise that would have been rally-suffocating GIDP #3.

Joe G’s moron managing is going to lose this game and the division title.

  • UncleArgyle

Lucky for Tex there were already 2 outs. That would have been DP#3

  • UncleArgyle

Lucky for Tex there were already 2 outs. That would have been DP#3

  • UncleArgyle

Lucky for Tex there were already 2 outs. That would have been DP#3

    • Hugh

That’s easy for you to say.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

tex has managed to end 3 of the 5 innings. nice to see cano coming up when it matters. if they don’t come back, this one’s on girardi.

    • Hugh

If they don’t come back, it’s on Tex.

      • Bartolo’s Colon

you don’t blame girardi at all given that tex hasn’t played in a month and cano has never been hotter this year?

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

It was a foolish lineup, but that doesn’t excuse Tex from doing the job.

  • Hugh

    Just awful.

  • Yanker

At least it wasn’t a double-play this time!

  • Chilango

Short leash Phelps. Prevent the 6th inning implosion

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

All this DP talk is getting me randy

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

Phelps is NOT to blame if they lose. He gave up just as many runs as CC did and Phelps was even facing 2 additional major league hitters. Teixera should be batting 6th, maybe even 7th below Grandy. Girardi really screwed up tonight.

  • pistol pete

The all mighty corporate Yankees with 2 games left in their season bat Arod 3rd and Tex 4th ahead of the hottest and best hitter on their team Cano. Girardi is an idiot and if I were Cano after next season something like this might have me shop around at free agency. Tex hasn’t played in a month, the seasons on the line and Cano’s still batting 5th, only Girardi and the corporate Yankees who put the higher salary players ahead of the better hitter, unbelievable. And don’t tell me it’s just tonite I’ve been barking should hit 3rd all year and just leave him there, everyone should figure out where they hit around him. Girardi needs to take his binder and shove it where the sun does not shine. Nice nite Tex two dp’s and a ground out all with men on base.

    • jjyank

Nite? Tonite? What are these things?

  • Kramerica Industries

Longo K’s with two on and two out. Still 1-0 O’s.

  • Mike N

    Big out!

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    Well done Phelps.

  • http://yanksgoyard.com/ Joe F

Phelps did well. Probably better than Nova would have done. We need runs.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

Phelps leaves to a rousing ovation. He gave us the big game we needed. Now here comes Boone to give up a hit.

  • Kramerica Industries

Don’t let Phelps get an L for this. That would be fricken’ criminal.

  • Klemy

Hopefully Phelps’ start doesn’t go to waste because of the ground ball with runners on base. Good start for him.

  • Captain_Turbo

Not a bad outing for the kid.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Meanwhile, Shields continues to dominate.

Hope he nor Phelps get L’s tonight for fine efforts.

  • Mike N

This is seriously exciting baseball. I can’t remember the last time the regular season came down to the wire like this.

    • VT Yankee Fan

      2005

      • Mike N

I can barely remember my own name when I wake up in the morning. You think I remember the 2005 season? lolz

  • ClayDavis

Rays cant get a freaken run? Come on

    • Chilango

      either can we

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    Good Boone.
    Runs please.

    • jjyank

      COOKIES

  • Cy Pettitte

Shields is dealing, can this lame Rays offense score him some runs

  • Bartolo’s Colon

need to score at least two this inning

  • Effthisnoise

    6th inning walk off

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

We’re into the Boston pen. They’re not good. Someone needs to come up with a big HR.

  • Athenian

Damn Shields has 10 strike outs.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

We’d be up 15-1 if Joe had hit Cano 4th.

  • Mike N

    Score this fucking runner!!!!

  • Kramerica Industries

    Robbie continues to hit.

Man, that lineup decision continues to look more and more foolish.

    • The Real Greg

Of course that’s a fallacy and in hindsight.

      • Positive Scheister of Happiness

Considering the hindsight was foresight and its something everyone has been questioning all night. Okay.

  • Effthisnoise

Girardis stupid logic of not hitting cano cleanup because of a lhp. Even tho he is the hottest hitter on the team and 7 for his last 8 against LHP!

  • Greg

Nobosy should complain about the lineup, because I didn’t see anybody complaining about it before the game.

  • Yanker

Kudos to Phelps – big start – did just fine.

  • Greg

Nobosy should complain about the lineup, because I didn’t see anybody complaining about it before the game.

    • Get Phelps Up

      Are you a different Greg?

      • The Real Greg

        Sorry about that. Different browsers.

    • RkyMtnYank

Yea, a lot of people were.

  • Austin Aunelowitzky

    Fans at the Stadium,
You are better than a Boston Sucks chant right now.

  • Hummingbird S.

Grandy should not be batting here, unfortunately.

    • The Real Greg

      WHO?

  • pistol pete

This one’s on Girardi if the Yankees lose.

  • pistol pete

This one’s on Girardi if the Yankees lose.

    • jjyank

Why, because Cano wasn’t one spot higher? Really? How about if they lose, it’s on the fucking players.

    • Captain_Turbo

Or the players. Since they’re, you know, the ones playing.

  • nsalem

Is it right to be chanting Boston Sucks when they actually do suck?

  • Captain_Turbo

Boston sucks chant? Really? Do we have to lower ourselves to the level of those monkeys?

  • Kramerica Industries

    The frustration continues to grow.

This is a game the Yankees can’t afford to lose. For the love of God, do not lose it.

  • Hummingbird S.

predictable as it gets.. Granderson should not bat against a lefty with the game on the line.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

      craving Andruw Jones are you?

    • nsalem

      who should have been batting?

  • Widget

    Rich Hill. This is sad.

  • spectra

Does Rich Hill have any chance on a bunt, almost every pitch he ends up five feet towards first

  • Athenian

Yankees would be truly unsuccessful if it were not former hitting dominance of Granderson.

  • Athenian

Yankees would be truly unsuccessful if it were not for the hitting dominance of Granderson.

  • Athenian

Yankees would be truly unsuccessful if it were not for the hitting dominance of Granderson.

  • Pasta Stumbling Sojo

I couldn’t find a number for RISPhits that don’t score a run, but there’s this:

    Yankees with RISP:
.254 BA (compared to .263 overall)
    532 runs on 331 hits
1.60 runs per hit (compared to .55 runs per hit overall)

    MLB with RISP:
.255 BA (compared to .255 overall)
    15191 runs on 10030 hits
1.51 runs per hit (compared to .50 runs per hit overall)

So the Yankees have slightly fewer hits with RISP than they should given their overall average, and it doesn’t seem like they score fewer runs per RISPhit than you’d expect.

  • Athenian

Yankees would be truly unsuccessful if it were not for the hitting dominance of Granderson.

  • pistol pete

If the Yanks blow this game it’s on Girardi for the likeup changes.

  • Effthisnoise

“The yankees have other ideas” says kay, like what most dp’s and pop ups in a game?

  • JMK

It would be nice if some of the fans tried to get the ball. This game is, you might have heard, important.

  • ClayDavis

    Shoukd have just sent cano

    • jjyank

And have him be out by a mile? M’kay.

    • AaronGuielWithASmile

No way, he would’ve been out by a mile.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

Such an electric ballplayer. Maybe Nunie should be hitting 4th.

  • Mike N

    Nunie!!!

  • Kramerica Industries

DAMMIT! Thought that would tie the game.

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

    Let’s go Ichiro!

  • Hummingbird S.

that’s unfortunate… now we need another big hit

  • Effthisnoise

    Needed that run to score.

  • flamingo

I just thought, NUNEE! And then groaned that the stupid nickname actually caught on. STILL.

  • Cant believe they killed opie

Can we just make nunez a outfielder already.

    • JMK

He’s such a reliable fielder as is, it makes sense to give him a different position.

  • spectra

This loss is on Girardi for putting Nunez in the eigth spot

    • CUYanks

I know! If Joe had just batted all the hitters who got hits in a row, they would surely have scored more! Plus, for all the batters Phelps gave up a hit on, he should have temporarily brought in Boone Logan, as he got his two batters out.

  • Effthisnoise

    Needed that run to score.

  • Effthisnoise

    Needed that run to score.

  • Cy Pettitte

    this game is beyond brutal.

  • Mike N

    MOTHERFUCKER!!!! AQUGHHH!

  • Bartolo’s Colon

unfuckingbelievable, how do we get so much offense and 1 fucking run. this is just stupid

  • Kramerica Industries

Hit hard, but nonetheless, another opportunity wasted.

  • The Real Greg

Buck’s deal to the devil is working perfectly.

  • Terry Bollea

Great, next inning is set up perfectly for ARod and Tex to kill things again. Thanks Joe.

  • CountryClub

    6 innings, 10 hits, 1 run.

  • Hall and Nokes

    What the hell happened there?

  • Bartolo’s Colon

and tex is going to come up in a big spot next inning

  • teddy

should have sent, they weren’t gotta get a hit anyway, this offense iss trash

    • Hall and Nokes

It’s not like he was being held up. Looked like he could have gotten thrown out at third. Where the hell was he?

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

It’s going to be like this in the playoffs, folks. This team just cannot hit with RISP and that won’t correct itself. They either hit HRs or they lose, that’s just the way it is. We need a HR.

    • The Real Greg

The stats show otherwise. 3-8 with RISP.

  • Hummingbird S.

bad luck. Had he PH for Grandy, that inning might have ended up with a run. Use McGehee or somebody else, but not Grandy’s platoon bat.

  • Get Phelps Up

At least we’re not the Rays.

  • Athenian

Man, 10 hits and not a thing to show for it. Typical 2012 Yankees.

  • The Real Greg

Balls hit hard at people with RISP, unsure runners. This has got to be the unluckiest Yankee team with RISP that I have ever seen.

  • MannyGeee

Well, ichiromgot BABIP boned there. That drops 99 times out of 100

  • CUYanks

Wait, the number 3 seed also hosts the first 2 games this year?

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

      yep

  • toad

Major props for Phelps. He did a great job, IMO. Now let’s get some runs, dammit.

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

10 hits in 6 innings and only one run. Thats tough to do.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

      Yankees make it look easy.

  • teddy

giradri gaving up, pitching joba here

    • jjyank

      WAT

      • JMK

        Just go with it…

        • jjyank

I mean, it’s teddy. I know what to expect from his posts. I shouldn’t be surprised.

  • The Real Greg

Orioles are going to win the division. Buck made a deal with the devil.

-Has his upside down Orioles team playing above their had.

-Yankees are unluckiest team with RISP that I have ever seen

-Jerry Meals misses a call that was critical in the division race.

    • Bartolo’s Colon

not to mention the yanks have got to be leading the league in no run on hits with RISP

      • The Real Greg

That’s what I mean. The unluckiest team I have ever seen with RISP. That and hitting balls hard right at people.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Ho hum. Another Ciriaco hit.

  • Hummingbird S.

why throw anything near the zone to Ciriaco. He’ll swing at every pitch out of the zone.

  • bmezz

Joba givs up a run. i can almost bet on it.

  • Cant believe they killed opie

Come joba fart and snort and get the k

  • JMK

It’s almost like the Yankees don’t have a scouting report on Ciriaco.

  • Hummingbird S.

this is so pathetic. They continue to let Ciriaco beat them.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Don’t let Ciriaco score.

For the love of God, no.

  • Chilango

Three innings and we’re into their pen. Doable.

    • Winter

The Red Sox bullpen is actually their strength. Although that’s not really saying much at all.

      • Chilango

Not really. Their save % is 63, lowest in the AL.

    • bmezz

this is ridiculous. I realy hope they get rid of girardi and his stupis a$$ binder. Its like Girardi is trying to be bill beane with this stats bull. He has managed himself into loses.

  • Tom

    Rapada here?

    • JMK

      Joba dominates Tacoby.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

If Buck brings in Strop the Rays have a chance.

    • The Real Greg

Which is why he has Darren O’day in there.

      • Winter

Yeah… did you see that third strike to Peña?

        • Get Phelps Up

I saw that it was outside the strikezone.

          • Winter

It was actually an incredible pitch. Borderline to be sure, but close enough that I don’t fault the ump and it had some nasty break on it.

            I hate this.

  • Mike N

    YEAH, JOBA!!!

  • Hummingbird S.

    BIG OUT! NICE JOBA!

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

Jobber gets the crowd fired up. Hopefully that inspires the offense.

  • Kramerica Industries

Time to SCORE SOME FUCKING RUNS!!!

    • CUYanks

Rays and Yankees double walk off?

      • Athenian

Nope… Tied going into tomorrow where both will win and Yanks will lose tie breaker. Say hello to Oakland and a one game loss…season done.

        • The Real Greg

          Were you “expecting” more?

        • jjyank

You must be such a joyful person.

          • Athenian

Just a realist. This team is over achieving by just making the playoffs

        • Get Phelps Up

And I’m sure that will thrill you.

          • Athenian

Actually it won’t. Just not buying into this team and their under achieving ways. Sorry, I am not a band wagoner who thinks they are better than what they are.

            • Get Phelps Up

You’re either a troll or an idiot.

              • Need Pitching & Hitting

                I vote for both.

  • Terry Bollea

Now would be a GREAT time for Arod to stop doing that thing where he plays like a worthless overpriced sack of shit.

  • ClayDavis

Not a single run for the Rays. Unbelievable

  • Hummingbird S.

    so much bad luck

    • The Real Greg

When you go 3-8 with RISP and you only score one run off an error, what else does it suggest?

      • Chilango

        several infield hits?

        • The Real Greg

How about a deal with the devil

      • Athenian

A better team not made up of home run strike out hitters…but fear not they will all be back because that is the collective stupidity of the front office.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Of course it drifted foul.

    • The Real Greg

      Deal with the devil

  • Nice Scheister of Doom

Ten hits and one run = Bom-bok

  • Athenian

Yanks better pull their heads out! Assuming they know where to look. Tampa is not winning that game.

  • Hummingbird S.

SS defense, didn’t know that was allowed.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

i’m calling that boston will rob a homerun, that is pretty much the only thing we haven’t seen here

    • Winter

Pedro Ciraco will somehow rob a homerun.

  • Terry Bollea

Michael Kay calls that “stealing a base hit” because he’s so used to Jeter getting nowhere near that ball at short.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Two weak grounders.

Two less outs to work with.

    The frustration mounts.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

    arod- channel aug 7, 2009

    • Bartolo’s Colon

      actually august 8th i think

  • Nice Scheister of Doom

Need to bat over .150 to be the “Shortstop of the future.”

  • ClayDavis

    Pathetic

  • Cy Pettitte

this is fucking unreal. The Rays are going to lose a game in which Shields throws a CG with 15 Ks and 1ER and the Yankees are in danger of losing because they can’t score 2 runs.

    • The Real Greg

Hello Satan, this is Buck Showalter

      • Terry Bollea

Hello reality, this is the Yankees’ shitty offense.

        • The Real Greg

A shitty offense that’s second in the AL in runs scored?

  • teddy

balti simply better, this yanks offense is trult gutless and giradri is a pathetic manager, they lose the wildcard game to oak as well

    • Chris

      Oof, I hope you’re wrong.

    • Bartolo’s Colon

i’ll agree that girardi sucks, but baltimore is just as pathetic as the yanks tonight, rays manage to be even more pathetic

    • Captain_Turbo

Nah, Yanks win eleven straight in the playoffs. Book it.

  • WhittakerWalt

    Saving their worst for last.

  • Hummingbird S.

A-Rod is done. He looks awful.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

as a yankee fan, there is no way tonight could be more frustrating

  • Kramerica Industries

Forget everything else. If the Yankees lose this game, it is undoubtedly the worst loss of the season.

    Un-friggen-doubtedly.

  • Athenian

Well at least Tex can kill the inning with his patented double play.

  • Chilango

ARod ..and he all ours until when, 2050?

  • JMK

These threads really are unbearable. Why are so many of you so fatalistic?

    • The Real Greg

      Because they expect too much

    • Captain_Turbo

It’s the doom-and-gloom crowd. They smell blood when the Yanks are losing.

  • Nice Scheister of Doom

Wow nine pitches. Resistance is futile. Just roll over like Tex and live to GIDP another day. Play the backups.

  • TomH

Well, let’s hope the good Robertson shows up.

At the moment, Selig is in 7th Heaven. A tie, AL East, to be broken (he hopes) late tomorrow, with millions watching.

  • Kramerica Industries

Just realized this game feels JUST LIKE Game 5 against Detroit last year. Just fucking like it.

  • Hall and Nokes

The Rays not caring are actually even worse offensively than the Rays caring.

  • The Troll

Why is A-Rod still playing? This is a legitimate question that Girardi should be asking himself. When was A-Rod’s last productive stretch? Has he existed whatsoever in September? And batting him THIRD?!?!?! So many people discredit the importance of batter order, but, let’s be serious, tonight’s lineup cost them the game. When your 3 and 4 hitters are either coming off a substantial injury or in a sudden, drastic, severe career tailspin, your status as a baseball manager should likely be in doubt.

    • OMG! Bagels!

What would you like to do with someone who makes what he makes and is a good defensive player and does manage to produce?

      • The Troll

        English?

  • Mike N

    Phew!

  • Bartolo’s Colon

    please longoria, walk off please!!

  • Hummingbird S.

Longoria up with Zobrist on first

  • OMG! Bagels!

Where were the Negative Nancys last night? More frustrating than the Yanks are all the predictions about how and when they will lose the playoffs. If you have no faith, stop talking and go watch something else.

    • The Troll

Let them talk. Let them vent. Let them rant. Let them scream, curse, yell, and panic. They have every right to.

    • Athenian

Is addicting. Besides all of us who you call negative Nancy’s are secretly hoping for something positive to root for but each day it never happens. So like a beaten dog, we still come back to the same thing.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Up to Keppinger now.

    • MannyGeee

Well, that went super. Fucking Rays

  • MannyGeee

The Rays fucking blow at run production. Remember when Longoria was good? Those were fun times

  • Effthisnoise

Shields got robbed, prob his best game all year

  • Mike N

    D-Rob, YEAH!

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

2nd inning in a row the Yankee pitcher has fired up the crowd with a SO. The offense needs to do something here.

  • Hummingbird S.

game over, O’s win another 1-run game. Kinda like the Yankees, but the opposite.

  • The Real Greg

Buck: Okay Satan concentrate all your power on the Yankees game now.

  • Kramerica Industries

    2 hits, 15 strikeouts.

    And the Orioles win anyway.

    Can’t make this shit up.

    • The Real Greg

      Thank you Satan.

    • Effthisnoise

And yanks 10 hits 1 run. One of those days in mlb

  • Bartolo’s Colon

i think this is the first time that tex is up where he can’t end the inning. maybe he will respond well?

    • Bartolo’s Colon

unless of course they call it a ghost runner triple play

  • Pasqua

    Win. This. Fucking. Game.

    (Pretty please?)

  • Nice Scheister of Doom

These umps and their emphatic strike three calls.

  • ClayDavis

Thanks Rays. Couldn’t get one god damn run.

  • RkyMtnYank

Hope they leave the righthander in to move Tex to the left side so there is at least a chance, since Tex sucks balls from the right side.

    • RkyMtnYank

Nope, good move by Boston bringing a lefty in.

    • RkyMtnYank

Nope, good move by Boston bringing a lefty in.

    • Winter

I think you have that backwards… Tex is a much better righty batter than lefty.

      • RkyMtnYank

No way in hell, Tex sucks from the right side.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

      • Need Pitching & Hitting

        yes

  • Winter

For once the award for most pathetic offensive performance isn’t going to the Yankees. Congratulation’s Tampa Bay Rays!

  • stuart a

can arod hit the ball hard ever?

the worse 2 of 4 I have seen in a while..

as i stated yesterday bat Tex down in the order until he gets together..

girardi does not want to hurt aroid or tecs feelings by moving them down in the order.

  • The Troll

    Everybody. Everybody!

    Listen. Listen to this.

Everybody, shut up. Quiet down! You’re not going to believe this!

This is EPIC! Guess what . . .

    Buck Showalter made a deal with . . .

OMG! This is insane! Everybody. Everybody. Look at me. Listen.

    Buck Showalter made a deal with . . .

    THE DEVIL!!!

OUTRAGEOUS! I’m stunned. Everybody, give me your attention. The Devil.

    The motherfu*king DEVIL. Crazy.

  • Mike N

    Please get on base, Tex.

  • Nice Scheister of Doom

Pinch hit the ghost of McGehehehehehee for Tattered Tex. The binder never lies!

  • stuart a

the 3 and 4 hitters tonight for the yanks have been great.

arod has absolutely no power….unfriggin believable…

  • Hummingbird S.

seriously, teixera batting 4th 2 games after coming back from injury in a MUST WIN… that’s insane.

  • stuart a

arod gets jammed in batting practice…..

  • JMK

I know it seems almost unfathomable that we score a single run to tie the game given the offensive FAIL we’ve seen tonight. But one run really isn’t super insurmountable.

Do any of you have any faith anymore?

    • The Troll

      “I know it seems almost unfathomable . . .”

      Well, clearly you do.

  • Kramerica Industries

Now they can’t even get any fucking baserunners. Six outs in a row. WAKE THE FUCK UP.

    • MannyGeee

In their defense, they didn’t do anything with the base runners they had. Pray for the long ball dude…

  • Effthisnoise

We all missed Tex in the lineup but why would Joe think he was ready for cleanup after all those missed games

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

    Tick tock, Yankees

  • Nikhil

    Fucking disgraceful

  • The Real Greg

Since nobody questioned that decision before the game, we shoudn’t question it now

  • Hummingbird S.

are they really gonna go down in order without putting up a fight? very weak shit from the overpaid millionaires

    • The Real Greg

      No.

  • Karl Krawfid

God damn as good as the Yanks looked yesterday is as bad as they looked today.

    Choke jobs left and right.

  • stuart a

apropos they lose this game because of RISP fail since it has only been going on for 5 months…

    classic….

arod just got jammed in the cage under the stands…………….

    • Winter

      yankees are 3-for-8 w/ RISP today…

  • Bartolo’s Colon

i think i agree the only way we win this is if we hit a homer.

  • WhittakerWalt

I’m running out of synonyms for “pathetic.”

  • Get Phelps Up

Have the Orioles announced their TBA starter for tomorrow?

  • Kramerica Industries

Might as well hope for the home run now.

    Only way they’re scoring tonight.

  • The Troll

You know . . . I hear that fouling out is a mark of future success. Even more so? Grounding into multiple double plays is believed to be a positive omen. I’m psyched, guys. Deal with the Devil be damned!

  • Mike N

    Good job, Russell!

  • The Real Greg

Can the Yankees one time this year get lucky?

  • Hummingbird S.

PH!! FUCKING MORON, PH HIS SORRY ASS.

    • Winter

Who would you PH? Jones? That’d be even worse…

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

      Again, who?

      • Hummingbird S.

McGehee. Before you say something stupid, look up his numbers, he’s better than Grandy against lefties. Grandy is under .300 OBP against them.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting

Before you say something stupid, look closer.

McGehee vs. lefties as a Yankee: 189/286/324
          McGehee in Sept.: 000/167/000

          But yeah, much better.
At least with Granderson, he has a shot at the short porch.

  • Mike N

    WHAT?

  • JMK

    Whaaaaat? Ugh. Just. Ugh.

  • Karl Krawfid

    STUPID STUPID STUPID

  • Effthisnoise

    Awesome

  • Pasqua

    Welcome back, Tex and Brett!

  • BigBlueAL

    LOL

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

For such a speedy runner, Gardner is an outrageously bad basestealer.

FWIW I disagree with Cone, I didn’t see a balk there.

    • Pasqua

      He’s terrible. Always has been.

    • Winter

It was a (borderline) balk b/c he stepped towards home. You have to step towards (i.e. on the correct side of the 45° line) the base you throw to.

    • AaronGuielWithASmile

Changed my mind on replay, it did look like a balk.

      Still bad baserunning though.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

and to add insult to injury grandy will probably be up against a lefty

  • flamingo

    BAH.

  • Hummingbird S.

they always find a way to embarrass themselves..

    • Adam

How many wins do they have, again?

  • Kramerica Industries

    Unreal.

  • The Real Greg

    Thanks Satan. Keep it up

    • The Troll

How is this entire thread not reaming you a new a*shole?

  • Tom Q

    THAT’S what was missing.

  • WhittakerWalt

It’s like the playoff ineptitude started a couple days early.

  • whozat

Brett Gardner: not actually good at stealing bases.

  • The Troll

The two new additions accounting for, what, 8 outs?

  • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Wake up 2b Ump. That lean backwards made it a balk.

  • Cy Pettitte

what in the fuck. just when you think this team turned it around with the last two wins they pull this bullshit and throw away the division.

    • stuart a

why would the Yanks change there stripes after 158 games?

this pathetic beer league hackers is the team…

      • Need Pitching & Hitting

        need more parades……and extensions……

      • WhittakerWalt

        Go watch your Mets.

  • stuart a

francessa the moron today said keep arod in the 3rd or 4th slot, he is stealing bases and getting on base..

arod has power like jose iglesias…it is unfathomable they keep this piece of crap in the middle of the lineup…

    • Nice Scheister of Doom

You’re a fucken moron. Comparing A-Rod to Iglesias is disrespectful to Iggys glove.

  • teddy

the yanks need to quit and rebuild

  • Fin

Yankees are awesome, no hits with runners on again. Manage to go 3 and 3 against 2 of the worst teams in the AL.

  • True blue

    Jesus..what a shit show.

  • Adam

    Sorry, that’s a balk.

  • Nice Scheister of Doom

Should’ve stayed in fucken Tampa. Fuck you Grit Grutner!

  • http://yanksgoyard.com/ Joe F

    Ugh. We can’t lose.

  • JMK

    You must be kidding me.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Just fucking kill me.

  • MannyGeee

    Sure..l mean, why not.

  • Mike N

    Oh, for fuck’s sake.

  • http://yanksgoyard.com/ Joe F

    Dammit Soriano.

  • Cy Pettitte

ok I give up. heads should roll just for this loss.

    • Winter

Why does everyone do this? Yes it sucks balls what just happened, but we still have 3 outs and, if Granderson somehow magics his way on base, Nunie, Ichiro and Jeter coming up.

      • http://yanksgoyard.com/ Joe F

Because our natural emotion for such an act is to get mad.

      • Rocky Road Redemption

Plus tomorrow…I mean really, “heads should roll”? What type of bullshit is that?

      • Chet K

You were pretty accurate…sub Ibanez in for Nunie….Nice!

  • Athenian

Boom! There is the game. Well done, failures!

  • Bartolo’s Colon

thanks soriano. man what a choke job these guys have pulled off here

  • Chilango

hahaha Soriano way to go. Hey Greg what bad luck huh.

  • Pasta Stumbling Sojo

Looked like a balk, and looked like possibly a tie at 2nd. I like how they froze it when the glove was on his body AND this hand was on the bag. Very helpful.

  • Hummingbird S.

5 hits, 3 runs (AAA lineup)

10 hits, 1 run (overpaid millionaire chokers)

HR by Loney is simply pathetic.

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

Rabble rabble Girardi rabble binder rabble

  • WhittakerWalt

    OMG

  • BigBlueAL

At least CC will be well-rested for Friday….

  • Widget

hahahhahahahahahahahhahahahahha. Clutch Soriano, really fucking clutch.

  • teddy

just fired giradri and cashman now

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

Who is this giradri you keep talking about?

  • Kramerica Industries

This has been a sickening display by a team with first place on the line.

I cannot believe what I’m watching. These guys should be humiliated by what they’ve done.

  • Effthisnoise

Over under on a 7 pitch bottom of the 9th

    • MannyGeee

      Push

  • JMK

What was wrong with keeping Robertson in?

    • Hummingbird S.

don’t want to burn him for tomorrow. It’s all on Soriano. And the pathetic offense.

  • Karl Krawfid

2-1 fastballs on the inner half!

    Keep throwing em!

  • flamingo

Was the HR off a slider?

  • True blue

Are you fucking kidding me.. Awful job

  • WhittakerWalt

    YCPB

  • Rocky Road Redemption

I am really, truly amazed we are losing this game. I honestly was totally confident that at one point we’d make up that one run. That we haven’t is shocking to me.

(Cue host of people all talking about how it’s because the team is too old, unclutch, Tex’s fault, A-Rod’s fault, Girardi’s fault, et cetera).

Also, Soriano is starting to falter.

    • BigBlueAL

Tonight has been a microcosm of this season. Unfortunately not surprising at all they are losing this game.

      • Rocky Road Redemption

        Like I said.

    • Hummingbird S.

There’s no reason for having A-Rod or Teix hit near the top of the lineup.

      • The Troll

Everyone but the man writing out the lineup card agrees with you.

    • RBC

      ^^This!

I’m also worried about Soriano… has he ever been in a playoff save situation?

      • Get Phelps Up

        2010 with the Rays.

        • Kramerica Industries

          Technically, he hasn’t.

But he did help put Game 5 out of reach.

          • Get Phelps Up

He closed out both of the Rays wins. I think at least one of them was a save.

  • MannyGeee

God damn it, do I miss Mo. Say what you want about #untuck, Mo has one bad week a year and the rest of the season he’s lighs out. I feel like Soriano has a game like this every 3 weeks.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

You do not bring a closer into a non-save situation. I don’t know why managers always do this. It’s a different mentality. Ballgame over.

    • Winter

B-fucking-S. You bring in your best reliever when you need your best reliever.

  • The Troll

For all the season-long talk about how great Soriano’s been . . . he has been horrendous of late. Is there anyone on this thread that would trust him closing out a one out game in the playoffs?

    • stuart a

he has not been horrendous. he has not been Mariano like. He also seems to give up few jacks(rasmus)..

  • Pasqua

    Orioles: 15 K’s + 2 Hits + 1 Run = Win.

    Yankees: 11 Hits + 1 Run = Loss (?)

    This fucking game.

    • Hummingbird S.

Go look up Shields’ and Lester’s numbers.

      • Pasqua

        That’s a pretty vague suggestion.

  • Karl Krawfid

Remember the ONE game Soriano was throwing 95 plus against the Jays.

    ONE game.

  • stuart a

the delusion from yesterday is over.

soriano just gave up a homer to a guy with less power then aroid….

don’t worry the yanks will comeback, they have done it many times in the 9th this season…

the yanks should have scored 5 to 7 runs today if they were not grossly incompetent and Girardi hitting tex 4th in game 2 was a moron move especially with Ms Rodriguez in front of him in the order….

    • WhittakerWalt

“ARoid” = PROOF you’re a Mets or Red Sox fan. No Yankees fan calls him that.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

This team had to win two ballgames against a last place club. That’s all they had to do and the division, and possibly HFA, was theirs. They couldn’t do it. What does that say about this team? They even got 6 innings, 2 runs out of Phelps. What more could you ask for? Joe failed, Teixera failed, A-Rod failed. The only guy out there playing with passion is Nunez.

    • Adam

Really? Did they already play the last inning and tomorrow’s game? Seriously, sad the reactions here.

  • Bruce

Wtf. This pathetic. Two runs since the outburst yesterday.

  • Nice Scheister of Doom

Any executive in the Yanks front office: .”Moving forward Joe, call ahead three hours before each game and we’ll email you your lineup for the game.”

    Joe: “But, but, but…the binder.”

    Executive: *Click*

    • Winter

This never would (and could) happen. It’s the manager’s job to set lineups, not the FO. Can you image how pissed we’d be if the FO set lineups and then the team lost!

    • Winter

This would (and should) never happen. It’s the manager’s job to set lineups, not the FO. Can you image how pissed we’d be if the FO set lineups and then the team lost!

      • Nice Scheister of Doom

I agree, but batting Tex clean-up is moronic.

  • CUYanks

Before everyone completely gives up hope, look at Andrew Bailey’s stats. He hasn’t exactly been lights out.

  • Karl Krawfid

This non clutch Yankee team :(

  • BigBlueAL

At least after the game Jeter will say they still control their own destiny.

  • Joe M

I just watched the replay of Loney’s homerun. I don’t really how what to think of it. Soriano would’ve hit Martin’s glove dead on.

  • stuart a

don’t worry coming back from 2 down in the 9th is a piece of cake for this team. don’t worry they will not have hero complex, they will simply try to get hits..

they have done it many times this season late, no worries…

Who’s slugging % is higher over the last 30 games Arods or Iglesias the Boston SS?????

    • Winter

Since when did 2 games constitute a meaningful sample size for anything ever?

    • Get Phelps Up

If you really are a Mets fan it’s really sad that you have nothing better to do than troll a Yankees blog on a daily basis.

    • The Troll

The Hero’s Syndrome awaits. I can hear the popcorn popping. I. Cannot. Fu*king. WAIT!

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

      you were saying dumbass……

  • Kramerica Industries

Score three runs here and win this fucking game, Yankees.

  • Mike N

    Score some damn runs!!!!

  • Rocky Road Redemption

You guys realize that if we lose, we’re tied with a game left plus we have the wild card, right?

Nobody should be in trouble for losing this specific game when nothing’s been decided yet win or lose.

    • stuart a

      wtf you talking about..

they are trying to get home field… they are playing a AAAA team…

      • Rocky Road Redemption

Perhaps a parade will help matters.

        • Nice Scheister of Doom

Or punching some broad named Judy.

    • Adam

Don’t even attempt to rationalize with the bridge jumpers. They get more joy out of complaining about a loss then the Yankees succeeding, anyway.

  • Hummingbird S.

they have to score twice as much as they did all game long in just one inning.

  • The Troll

Ok. This game is lost. What should I be rooting for now? What’s the best outcome after tonight? What if they lose tomorrow. Fuck, if they lose tomorrow against a last place AAA team, then they should just lay down in the wild card game . . . Fuck this. I don’t know what to root for anymore. :(

    • Winter

Root for a comeback, this game’s not over yet!

Then if they do lose, root for them to win tomorrow. And the next day. And the next. And so on.

  • Chilango

Twins-Jays-Red Sox, The division on a plate. And we’re .500 against them. No one to blame but themselves for letting it slip away, if indeed it does tomorrow.

    • Nice Scheister of Doom

I agree. Lackluster play equals golf in early October.

    • The Troll

That sums it up right there. That. Forget losing the 10 game lead. That right there. Minnesota, Toronto, Boston . . . on a silver fucking platter. Heads SHOULD roll. I mean, like, what the buck . . . It was supposed to be SOO easy. Incredible. 10 games against losers and they go halvesies?

  • Bartolo’s Colon

so who is going to score the one run?

  • Bevis

We’ve seen this before. Now they will walk at least two guys onto base, with at least 2 outs left. Then they will all be left on base.

  • Kramerica Industries

    There’s a baserunner.

  • Mike N

    Grandy!!

  • Bartolo’s Colon

fucking ibanez????? please prove me wrong

    • Bartolo’s Colon

you can all thank me for that. also, very happy to eat crow there

  • Karl Krawfid

    • Cy Pettitte

I guess I know what I’m doing tomorrow.

    • jay

Of course it comes down to Arod-Tex.

  • Get Phelps Up

    PR C-Dick and double steal.

  • JobaWockeeZ

LOL what a gift by Bobby.

  • Hummingbird S.

i’d much rather have Chavez up here..

    • MannyGeee

You and stuart… We get it.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Atonement time for ARod.

    Get it done.

      • MannyGeee

        Fuckk…. Gimme a walk on A-walk….

  • Bartolo’s Colon

    please, lets do it ardo

  • The Troll

Bobby’s been a dumb shit all season, but even I’d agree with THAT move.

  • Chilango

ARod will be huge bank it

  • Bruce

So Al is more than overdue. C’mon overpaid dude.

  • Positive Scheister of Happiness

I like Baseball. Go Yankees. Isn’t Kay wrong, the massive comeback?!

  • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    Gotta sit fastball here IMO.

  • Winter

Wild pitch would be a gift from heaven (aka Red Sox pitching) right now.

  • Winter

MLB.tv just fucking died on me…

    • Adam

Arod walked, Sox to the bullpen (Melancon, I think?).

  • The Real Greg

If they pull this off, would this be the first win when trailing after 8. Or was that the Oakland win

    • Kramerica Industries

      This would be #1.

They weren’t trailing after 8 vs. Oakland. Trailing by four in the 13th? Sure. But not trailing after 8.

  • http://yanksgoyard.com/ Joe F

    Good ab.

  • Kramerica Industries

Amazing. It now comes down to Tex.

  • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Tex…just need a fly ball here buddy.

  • Get Phelps Up

Tex needs to take a strike here.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

    this scares me

  • Mike N

Huge AB for A-Rod!!! Now we can win on an out!!!!!!!!!

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

Oh no, Teixera up to hit a DP.

  • flamingo

    C’MON. DO THIS.

  • MannyGeee

Come on Bobby. Gimme Padilla here against Tex. That would be epic.

    • Adam

I think the world would explode if that happened.

  • Winter

Sac fly, very slow grounder, HR, single, error, WP I don’t care. Just get it done.

  • jay

Not the Alex of old with the bat, but the man can still put up a good AB with the best of them

  • WhittakerWalt

    Redemption time for Tex.

  • Hummingbird S.

once again, all up to Teix… hopefully this doesn’t blow up in Girardi’s (stupid) face once again.

    Don’t choke Teix.

  • The Troll

Oh god. The goat of the game up with the game on the line . . . Just hit it in the air you asshole.

  • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Real quick, did the O’s/Ray game go final? it was 1-0 in the 7th last I checked.

    • Get Phelps Up

      Yeah. Shields K’s 15 in a CG and loses…

      • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Ouch…that is really rough. That’s like a King Felix loss.

        • Get Phelps Up

Why did you take your blog link out of your handle?

          • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Personal reasons…I’ll probably reconnect it soon.

            • The Troll

              And because it sucked.

    • Adam

      Yeah, 1-0 final.

    • The Troll

You’re on the internet. I hear there’s this website called ESPN.COM. They’ve got scores to ALL kinds of crazy sports. EVEN CRICKET!

      • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Damnit, did someone forget to feed the Troll again? I leave for one night guys…did anybody at least take him for his walk?

        • Captain_Turbo

I tried. He kept peeing on my leg.

        • The Troll

Not my fault you’re a moron who clings to digital friendships on a baseball thread. But hey, next time I want to know what happened in the Kings/Sharks match, I’ll be sure to hit you up.

          • Captain_Turbo

You’re an angry little dwarf. Something you want to get off your chest? Lose your job? Trouble with your girl? Erectile dysfunction? You can tell old Turbo.

          • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

And it’s not my fault that you get your self worth from trying to bully people on a baseball thread.

            • The Troll

I bully those that deserved to be bullied. You, for instance. You have a very childish mind. It’s intriguing. Developmental disorder, perhaps? Your social immaturity is baffling. ‘Tis a big, big world out there. Make a real friend. Enjoy the realities of life. And, for future reference, just check out one of the many sport-oriented sites out there that cater to scores and such when you’re jonesin’ for an Oriole update.

              • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Just depression and anxiety disorder thanks. I’m sure it feels good to bully people who “deserve it” Also, I’m sure you have plenty of friends with your warm and cuddliness.

                • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Also, who is the one that’s more immature, the person who calls out an absolute stranger for having a “childish mind” and a potential developmental disorder, continues to mock him anyway after theorizing that he might have a disorder of some kind, or somebody that makes a passing joke about somebody with the handle “The Troll?” I’m just saying, i’d like to think that I am mature enough to not make fun of or bully somebody who I believe might have a developmental disorder.

  • Pasqua

Kay says of Tex, “The game continues to find him.” Well…yeah! He’s batting fucking clean-up. That’s kind of the point.

  • Bruce

I dunno. Would a fly ball be too much to ask for, here?

  • toad

No excuse not to win here.

  • The Next Guy

Depending on what Tex does here, the headlines after the game will be about redemption or Joe’s dumb decision to bat Tex ahead of Robbie.

  • CountryClub

    Come on, Teix….

  • Ghost of Joe Dugan

It will always surprise me the sheer magnitude of the stupidity that exists in fandom.

  • http://yanksgoyard.com/ Joe F

    Tex don’t suck.

    Love,

    me

  • Pasqua

YES is going into emergency narrative mode prior to this at-bat. Hilarious.

  • Tom

And to think the Red Sox only had to give up Josh Reddick to get Bailey.

    • Positive Scheister of Happiness

      I laughed.

  • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Embedded Yankee Mark Melancon? I like this machup.

  • Chilango

    Tex will come up big.

  • Richard Leo

    HR please!!!

    • Winter

      Fuck that. Sac fly please!!!

  • CUYanks

A groundball concerns me with respect to the calf of Teix.

    • Winter

Tex will hustle. He may suck, but I don’t think I’ve seen him not hustle. Just think of the game against the O’s or a few years ago when he scored from 1st on the dropped pop up against the Mets.

      • CUYanks

Yes, that’s why I was worried he might hurt himself again trying to beat out a DP.

  • Positive Scheister of Happiness

That second pitch shows way inside on Gameday. Awful umps.

  • Mike N

    crap

  • The Real Greg

So Joe is saved for the moment

  • http://yanksgoyard.com/ Joe F

    Cano. PLEASE.

  • Pasqua

    Just. The worst.

  • AaronGuielWithASmile

    Broken bat, Jesus

  • Hummingbird S.

    FUCK YOU GIRARDI

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    Fucking Tex.

    C’mon Robbie.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Mark…

    unreal. Awful.

  • Klemy

Wow. Tex having a forgetful night.

  • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    well…that was anticlimactic.

  • Rocky Road Redemption

I’d love all of you to call Girardi stupid to his face. Seriously, I’d pay to see it.

  • The Troll

3 3-3 ties in the ninth inning or later . . . That’s some crazy omen type shit right there!

  • Terry Bollea

I would have PHed Chavy or Dickerson there, I would trust my dog more to get a ball out of the infield than Tex right now.

  • Widget

why? why swing at anything? Melancon is garbage. He was going to walk Tex. What a time to have the worst game of his Yankee career.

    • Joe M

I totally agree. I don’t know why you would want to swing, or even put the ball in play. Just work a walk. Game over.

  • Tom

Yikes… fastball right down the middle.

  • Mike N

    C’mon, Robbie!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Klemy

Well, chances are it won’t be a walk that ends this inning.

    • Captain_Turbo

Why you swinging at that shit, Robbie?

  • Chilango

Right down the middle Tex WTF

  • The Troll

Is this Teixera’s best game of his career?

  • The Real Greg

Well Joe is saved because Robbie gets a chance here.

  • Positive Scheister of Happiness

Ohhhh, you’re off the Mark Teixeria.

  • Peter

Tex and Swisher, tuff battle between who is the most unclutch player in the current roster

    • Adam

Are we really still on the Swisher unclutch thing? Jeepers.

  • Mike N

    Darn.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

Maybe Teix should just take the rest of the year off and let Chavy handle 1B. He really hurt the team tonight and might cost them the division crown.

    • Mike N

The dude did hit a fucking homer last night, if you recall. Get a grip on reality.

  • The Troll

OH yeah, also . . . Thank you Soriano.

  • The Real Greg

    So Cano fails AS WELL

    • Hummingbird S.

      shut the fuck up dumbass.

  • Rocky Road Redemption

    How deflating.

  • Klemy

Couldn’t pick a worse pitch to pull the trigger on.

  • CountryClub

    Unreal

  • flamingo

    Ugh.

  • Pasqua

I know I should be grateful that they tied it and all, but how do you not win the fucking game there?

  • Karl Krawfid

How the fuck did they not win this game?

    Fuck this team.

    • stuart a

they have not won a game late coming back in the 9th the whole fuckin season.

      not once……….

      • WhittakerWalt

And you’ve cherished every one of those losses…..

  • Kramerica Industries

Yankees truly are their own worst enemy.

I cannot believe this game is in extras.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

granted, the hr was nice, but what a weak performance, if tex comes up again, you have to ph chavez

  • True blue

    Tex sucks balls

  • Hummingbird S.

seriously Girardi deserves to be fired because of this move alone. What a fucking moronic decision.

  • Widget

well that was their best shot to win the game. They’ll give up runs here.

  • stuart a

shocker they could not get the 3rd run across what a friggin shock.

bases loaded 1 out and the sack of s Texiera could not hit the ball to the outfield and then hero complex cano with a weak grounder to 2nd..

    what a friggin shock……

    • Captain_Turbo

So basically you’re saying they suck because they tied the game? Okaaaaay…..

      • toad

No. The criticism is the inabilty to score a run with the bases loaded and one out against a mediocre pitcher.

Is that unreasonable? All Teixeira had to do was hit a deep fly, or wait for a walk, or something. And when he didn’t Cano could have still won it. He didn’t either. You think that’s OK?

  • WhittakerWalt

That was literally the worst call of Sterling’s career.

  • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    terrible swing by Cano…

  • Bruce

Weak. Seems like Raul tied it up just to tease us. Wtf. Bases loaded one freaking out and no runs. I’m beyond aggrevated.

  • The Troll

I didn’t think that this game could get any MORE deflating. Jesus Fu*king Montero.

  • YanksFanInBeantown

    Fucking Teixeira.

  • Chilango

Missed a huge opportunity. Too bad.

  • Cy Pettitte

    I can’t believe this shit

  • Karl Krawfid

    No closer tomorrow.

    GJ Joe G.

    • TomH

Not too thrilled as it is that the very shaky-lately Soriano is in to face the top of their order.

    • Cy Pettitte

either choice is pretty shitty, Soriano or the subpar relievers.

they really fucked up not winning in the 9th.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

at least tex has a hell of a glove in october

  • The Real Greg

All of you that are questioning Girardi about the lineup have no right to because I heard nobody questioning the lineup before the game. So therefore all the criticism is coming in hindsight which is not fair

    • stuart a

i said bat Tex down in the order yesterday.. look it up.

i am not required to evaluate the lineup on a daily basis..

      • The Real Greg

I’m talking to the sane people

  • stuart a

yanks find new ways to tease with us on a daily basis…

    coulda shoulda woulda……..

  • Positive Scheister of Happiness

Hmmmm, if Robbie and Teix were switched, that would have possibility scored a run or this would already be at least 5-3 right now and the pen wouldn’t need to be raided. Spare me the fallacy of blah blah blah. I’m positive.

    • The Real Greg

      FALLACY AND HINDSIGHT

      • The Troll

But Greg, what about Satan? What merit do FALLACY and HINDSIGHT have when the devil’s so involved?

        • The Real Greg

Those two have nothing to do with each other. I am speaking about the criticism here, not the game there.

          • The Troll

Oh. I see, because the devil is only concerned about Buck Showalter. Not Barrack Obama, not Lady Gaga, not Lebron James, not Kim Kardashian, not Al Roker, not Ryan Gosling. Just Buck and fighting O’s. Okay. I see your logic. As you were.

      • Positive Scheister of Happiness

Considering the hindsight was foresight and its something everyone has been questioning all night. Okay.

        • The Real Greg

          BEFORE THE GAME.

          Read please

          • The Troll

            Greg. You’re a complete nutter.

          • Positive Scheister of Happiness

Foresight -noun- the ability to predict what will happen.

It didn’t take Cleo to tell ya that Cano was a better choice in the four spot. Teix is coming off injury and its been the theme all night, PRIOR to Teix’s first AB.

Hindsight – noun- understanding a situation after it has happened.

  • Hummingbird S.

a shaky Soriano for a second inning of work.. that has trouble written all over.

    • stuart a

who do you want Nova? freddy Garcia…

soriano needs to go 2 total innings..

      • http://fendersonandhampton.com Cuso

Derek lowe against his former team

  • DC

Ok, all gameday said was Tex flied out to center…was it too shallow for Jeter to score or what?

    • Hummingbird S.

it was a pop up on a very good pitch to hit

    • TomH

A broken-bat pop-up to center is more accurate.

    • Chilango

It was a fucking meatball that he missed

  • The Real Greg

Stop criticising the man please. It’s very rude.

    • Kramerica Industries

      Which man, Joe or Mark?

      They both deserve it.

      • The Real Greg

Joe. Nobody mentioned the lineup order before the game. Therefore to crtiicise him for it is in hindsight and is unfair by the laws of logic.

        • The Troll

OMG. I hate you more and more with every comment. I would’ve commented, and in fact, DID, on Facebook! You know why? Because if you LIKE the Yankees on FB, they reveal the lineup nearly 4 hours before game-time. So, you know what I did? I said Girardi was an ass hat for fucking with a working formula. And, yeah, my logic is always flawless, babycakes.

    • WhittakerWalt

What the hell do you care if we criticize these guys? That’s what the game thread is for. They’re public figures. Sports figures. They’re paid very well to perform, and we’re entitled to judge their performances.
Is this White Knight schtick of yours for real?

      • The Real Greg

Why did Steve Bartman care when he was public enemy number 1 in Chicago?

        • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I’m seriously confused…what is your point here?

          • Rocky Road Redemption

Isn’t it obvious? Criticism is mean. Don’t do it.

        • WhittakerWalt

Steve Bartman was an ordinary citizen who behaved the same way any of us would if a foul ball came our way. He did nothing really wrong, yet received death threats.
          Your comparison is nonsense.

  • Terry Bollea

Terrifying thought — this game goes 17 or 18 innings — Yankees lose — they tie the O’s — they lose the playoff against the O’s — then they have to play a play-in — THEN, if they win that, they get to the real playoffs, with 27 extra innings in the last half-week under their belt.

    • Pasqua

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, Hulkster.

    • Adam

Cats and dogs, living together…mass hysteria.

  • Cant believe they killed opie

Something has to be done about this
Bring in a sports shrink whatever.

  • Mike N

Teix hit a homer last night, but it was supposed to be outrageous for Girardi to bat him cleanup today? Get a fucking grip, people.

    • BigBlueAL

If Cano was batting 3rd nobody would be complaining. The fact that Cano is hitting 5th behind Arod and Tex is the problem.

  • Kramerica Industries

    And now a baserunner.

    Lovely.

  • RBC

    Get it together Sori

    • Positive Scheister of Happiness

      DFA him.

  • BigBlueAL

Soriano couldnt challenge Pedroia, who is hitting with a broken finger, with a 3-2 fastball??

  • Chilango

hahaha Soriano is afraid to challenge Pedroia

  • Hummingbird S.

too many sliders. that’s when he gets in trouble.

  • Kramerica Industries

Sori having trouble finishing. Not surprising, given he’s thrown damn near 40 pitches now.

  • stuart a

they pinch hitting for chris suck stewart in the bottom of this inning?

I do.. Cervelli better get his gear out…..

    • BigBlueAL

If Melancon is still pitching gotta figure Chavez will pinch-hit.

  • Winter

At first I didn’t get it, but now I see why Girardi left Soriano in. If the Yankees win tonight, they guarantee at least a tie for the division. If they lose, they could still end up the wildcard outright. A win tonight is much more important than maybe a win tomorrow.

    • CUYanks

I agree with this, as long as Girardi thinks Soriano won’t lose effectiveness with the high pitch count in this game.

    • BigBlueAL

Considering the alternatives left in the bullpen right now, have no problem at all with Sori pitching the 10th inning.

      • CUYanks

There is not a bigger spot really. For all Joe knows, it could be the last game he even ever pitches for NYY. No saving him.

  • Captain_Turbo

    Get him out, MFIKY.

  • Karl Krawfid

    GJ Sori

  • Bartolo’s Colon

for a second i though arod sailed that, please, one measly run now

  • Get Phelps Up

    Martin’s 3rd walkoff upcoming.

    • stuart a

      he was pinch run for..
      yes has no clue

      • Get Phelps Up

        My bad.
        give me a raise….

  • Hummingbird S.

no teix coming up, time to win this shit

  • Mike N

OK. Now let’s score some runs.

    • Mike N

Or just one run will do!

  • Kramerica Industries

Lead-off, walk-off home run hitting Russell Martin coming up, folks.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

That’s the last of our decent relievers. Win it here or we could lose it. I better see Chavy PH for Stewart. You carry 3 catchers for a reason.

    • The Real Greg

We still have Eppley and Rapada. Then we’re dead.

    • CUYanks

      Done.

  • Rocky Road Redemption

The Mysterious Force is working its ass off today. It’ll take all of our skill and, dare I say it, guile to beat it.

  • Kramerica Industries

Soriano ain’t pitching again until either Thursday, or Friday, or (hopefully) Saturday.

  • stuart a

i go to lowe next inning if they do not win this now..

girardi better pinch hit for stewart.

is rapada hurt? he has not pitched much lately…

  • Kramerica Industries

Oh shoot. Didn’t realize Martin left already. Oops.

  • Karl Krawfid

Ibanez will do it agian folks.

  • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Wow…that looked outside from here (the 1-1)

    • The Real Greg

It was and that led to the strikeout

  • The Real Greg

The bad call on the 1-1 led to that one

    • Positive Scheister of Happiness

Way outside. It forces one to swing. IMO, the reason this year has been a K crazy year, the zones seem bigger than ever in an effort to shorten the games, hence batters expanding the zone and umps wide, inside, low and up called zone.

  • Kramerica Industries

    That was awful, CKurtis.

    • Alkaline

      ICWYDT

  • Alkaline

May the Dark Lord strike again!

  • CUYanks

If it comes to it, we’re pretty likely seeing Rapada against Loney.

  • Mike N

    Holy moly.

  • BigBlueAL

3 LH power hitters that inning vs Melancon and nothing. Ugh.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Granderson.

Taking a fastball that split the plate only to swing at garbage.

    • The Real Greg

Wrong. The 1-1 pitch was outside which led to that strikout because Curtis was forced to swing at that.

  • Hummingbird S.

only Ibanez coould put up a decent AB..

    • The Real Greg

Helped out by the crappy strikezone by the ump at least with Grandy

  • mt

A Cervelli sighting – let’s hope he does not do anything stupid.

    • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

…I just wanna see some fist pumps. I’ve been waiting all season for those pep-inducing fist pumps.

  • Austin Aunelowitzky

If anyone needs a free life coach, I’ll be in NY in a few weeks.

  • Alkaline

BAM BAM will end up doing it.

  • stuart a

i do not use rapada yet, they will use the big 1b for loney and the guy is a better hitter.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Oh man, Derek Lowe.

    This could get really ugly.

  • Captain_Turbo

Oy, that could have gone better.

  • Kramerica Industries

    …and there’s a 0 out baserunner for Boston.

    Oh boy.

  • Chilango

Here we go. Lowe on the mound. Ass tightening time

    • Hummingbird S.

Against 2 straight hitters who will hit as lefties… amazingly bad management.

  • Hummingbird S.

where’s the binder? why not Rapada for Loney? Girardi waits for game 161 to reduce the number of pitchers used?

  • Mike

    No Rapada?

    • Winter

Joe’s saving him for after Eppley gives up a hit on one pitch to the only batter he faces.

  • The Real Greg

Padilla’s coming in. Get Tex up

    • Positive Scheister of Happiness

      *mouth waters*

    • King George

      We’ve seen enough tonight.

  • The Troll

Lowe to lose the game? Meh. Ok. I guess I can handle that. Although, I could’ve sworn there was still a Rapada an an Eppeley hanging out in the outfield . . . I must be losin’ my mind.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Shit.

Got the lead runner to 2nd anyway. That’s not good.

  • Cy Pettitte

losing game 161 because of Lowe and Cervelli would be unbearable

    • Hummingbird S.

If they lose, it’s because of Girardi and Teix.

      • The Troll

Mostly Joe. The MT25 has never been known for his clutchy disposition.

  • The Real Greg

So is Cervelli a defensive catcher too?

    • Winter

That was a very tough pitch to block.

    • The Troll

The only offensive catcher we have is now a seaman.

  • Captain_Turbo

I think I just saw the ghost of Frankie Cervelli…

  • True blue

    Catch the fucking ball Frankie

  • Bartolo’s Colon

    i missed that fist pump

  • Get Phelps Up

    Walk Cirirao please.

    • Get Phelps Up

      Good.

    • The Real Greg

      They do

  • CUYanks

If. Pedro… I don’t even want to say it.

  • Hummingbird S.

PLEASE DO NOT THROW A PITCH NEAR THE PLATE

  • BigBlueAL

    Ciriaco is feared.

  • Karl Krawfid

    I am embarrassed

    • CUYanks

      Me too.

    • Positive Scheister of Happiness

      It’s A-Rods twin on deck

  • Bartolo’s Colon

is lowe really throwing ibb’s over 80 mph?

  • Kramerica Industries

    IBB Ciriaco.

    Wow.

  • Hummingbird S.

    WOW, REALLY?

    • The Real Greg

Hey, you said not a throw a pitch near the plate.

  • Winter

Smart move walking George Herman Ciriaco.

    • CUYanks

Tyrus Raymond Willie Howard Barry Lamar Ciriaco.

  • Mike N

    Nice job, Lowe.

  • Get Phelps Up

Can we please please pleeeeeeeease have a walkoff now?

  • Cy Pettitte

end this game now, I can’t take many more innings of this.

  • The Troll

    And if THAT’S not a microcosm of the Yankee’s bizarre season . . .

  • Hummingbird S.

    worked out. nice!

  • Kramerica Industries

    Ichi-Jeter-Swish

    I want pie.

    You want pie.

    WE ALL WANT PIE.

    Give us pie.

    • Captain_Turbo

They don’t do the pie anymore, do they? But I like the sentiment.

    • Bartolo’s Colon

      i want poland spring baths

      • Kramerica Industries

        Moland Springs.

  • Chilango

    Nice job by Lowe.

  • Captain_Turbo

    Nicely done!

  • mt

If either Ciriaco or Iglesias got a hit, it would be shame on us anyway.

    Great job by Lowe.

Can’t Ichiro hit a homer anytime he wants (given his legendary bat control) – if so, now is the time for it:-)

  • JFH

    Yanks will win it here.

  • CUYanks

Please let’s get it to Teixeira. Please!

    • Positive Scheister of Happiness

Things we never thought we’d say today.

      But…THIS!!

  • Get Phelps Up

According to Game Score, that game that Shields pitched tonight was the best pitched game in Rays history. (h/t YCPB on twitter)

  • Adam

When Lowe has his sinker, he is still a moderately effective pitcher, eh?

  • Mike N

    NOW SCORE!

  • Effthisnoise

Well since the yanks got shut down by the guy with a 6 era, maybe they can hit one of the biggest scrubs in baseball

    • Positive Scheister of Happiness

Is Padilla that sweaty or is it a sort of grease or water. He makes Freddy look dry.

  • Kramerica Industries

It was a Singleton-Cone booth when Ichiro walked off Mo in 2009.

    • Bartolo’s Colon

i actually had a nightmare about that game

    • Positive Scheister of Happiness

I was AT that game, I left SafeCo early and saw it on Northwest Cable news the next morning and was shocked!

      • Positive Scheister of Happiness

I left as Mo came in. I was decked out in Yankees gear and was getting cursed out from being such a dick about how terrible the M’s were and Yanks were gonna crush them. Hummed enter sandman all the way to the car and I’m glad I left early because it would’ve been the equivent of someone urinating in my fruit loops.

        • Kramerica Industries

I was at a Rays/Yankees game in Sept. 2010 when Reid Brignac walked off the Yankees and propelled the Rays to first place.

Out of the ballpark before Brignac had rounded the bases. Sick to my stomach.

  • Kramerica Industries

Alas, Ichiro’s flaw remains he does not know how to take ball 4.

    • The Real Greg

Singleton said it was too close to take.

  • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

    Ichi…that was ball 4 buddy.

    • The Real Greg

Probably, but I can’t trust this ump.

      • Positive Scheister of Happiness

        True story.

  • Effthisnoise

Did cone really just say “sazuki with the chop stick”???

    • CG

lol, I was thinking that one could construe that as slightly racist…

    • Adam

Even worse, at Cell Field they used to play the Rice-a-Roni theme song when Matsui came to bat when he was with the Yanks. Seriously.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Seven straight set down.

Not the time to stop getting on base, guys.

  • Hummingbird S.

    this offense is pathetic.

    • The Real Greg

Second most runs in the AL? Bit harsh sin’t it.

      • Adam

Only in Yankee-fandom could a potential 95 win team be considered pathetic.

        • Big Members Only (formerly RI$P FTW)

          $200 million, bro.

  • Get Phelps Up

    55 mph on that one.

  • Adam

Wow, incredible piece of hitting there. 55 mphs!

  • CG

wow, 55mph, ’twas indeed an eephus

  • Mike N

    That was like whiffle ball!

  • The Real Greg

Good hitting by swisher to wait on the Eephus

  • Kramerica Industries

Padilla throws his eephus curveball. Swisher tells eephus curveball “Fuck you”.

  • Hummingbird S.

here we go, runner on but they have to get through A-Rod and Teix before the best hitter on the team can hit. What sense does that make?

  • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Alex…again. Please come through this time lol.

  • Cy Pettitte

suprised Padilla isn’t hitting ARod with a pitch so he can then hit Teix with a pitch.

  • Kramerica Industries

Would be nice to end that skid, Alex.

  • CG

    He’s gonna do it

  • flamingo

    BLEH.

  • Kramerica Industries

    MOTHERFUCKER

  • The Real Greg

    The bad luck continues

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

    wtp

  • Mike N

    fuuuuuuuuck

  • Adam

Man, have got to be kidding me.

  • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

…hell of a catch by Ellsbury.

  • Cy Pettitte

    ok fuck this game

  • Hummingbird S.

no power. please someone retire this motherfucker.

  • MannyGeee

Fuck you Jacoby. I want to go to bed and beat off already. stop catching that shit

    • Positive Scheister of Happiness

Listen to the radio feed, it helps me get off quicker.

      • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

That might be the most disturbing thing I ever heard.

        • Big Members Only (formerly RI$P FTW)

          What an edgy comment! Outrageous!

          • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I know you’re mocking me but just thinking about trying to do anything sexual with John and Suzyn playing is creepy.

  • Kramerica Industries

    #OriolesMagic

    • The Real Greg

      Dealing with the devil

      • Kramerica Industries

Satan bows before the power of #OriolesMagic

  • Anthony

    So damn close

  • The Real Greg

You have to say this team is extremely unlucky.

  • Hall and Nokes

    Alex Rodriguez: once good.

  • Captain_Turbo

Wow. Really thought he got hold of that one.

  • TomH

Pressing their luck with Lowe against these 3 guys, although I’m not sure what the alternative is. Mixing and matching? What did Freddy throw yesterday? A handful of pitches?

  • toad

    Fifteen hits. Three runs. FWIW.

  • stuart a

give arod a double on that 1 he actually hit the ball hard and not to the shortstop..

    change the rules for him..

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

      throw him a parade…..give him an extension…….

    • jjyank

      stop commenting…i’ll throw you a parade…

    • Positive Scheister of Happiness

Throw a parade. Ike Davis. Punch and Judy. RBIs. grumble…grumble

    • Get Phelps Up

I’m sure you were thrilled when that was caught.

  • CG

Fifteen hits (and X more walks) and 3 runs…. don’t you just love that?

  • BigBlueAL

Cant get mad at Arod cause he hit it hard but its just further proof of how much power he has lost.

    • Positive Scheister of Happiness

He needs some alone time with his cousin.

    • Adam

Hitting the ball on the nose to the track in the deepest part of the stadium is poof of his lack of power?

      • Hummingbird S.

that’s about as good a pitch as you can get, and he could only hit it to the warning track.

        • Adam

He hit the ball 400 feet (or so). Hit it solid, didn’t carry out. Thst is proof of nothing (and not that we need that as proof that his power has lessened).

      • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

You could make the argument that even 09 A-Rod puts that pitch in the seats.

  • Kramerica Industries

Don’t put Ellsbury and his speed on with no outs.

    Oh God no.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Cano had that ball.

    Need to check the D.

  • Hummingbird S.

impossible to get a 1-2-3 inning against a triple-A lineup. But their scrubs can get 1-2-3 innings against the overpaid millionaires.

  • stuart a

do not use eppley under any circumstances. HE SUCKS.

cano woudl have had that ball but Lowe had no clue.

yanks 1 for 20 qith men on base. that is the yanks in a nutshell.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

“yanks 1 for 20 qith men on base”

      way to pay attention…….and spell…….

  • Kramerica Industries

Both teams are 3-41 with men on base tonight?

    Unreal ineptitude.

    • The Real Greg

Yankees are 3-10 with RISP. They can’t be 1-20 with men on base.

      • Kramerica Industries

        Yeah, blame Kay for that.

  • The Real Greg

Wait a minute. The Yankees have 3 hits with RISP. How cant they be 1-20 with men on base?

  • Adam

Could this game get any weirder at this point? And it is a freakin bird no less! Better not have been an Oriole. Satan.

  • MannyGeee

    Fuck yo bucket….

    -Dat bird

  • Anthony

Too funny. Might be a spy for the Orioles says Kay

    • MannyGeee

Good to see Kay & Jery Remy share the same sense of humor… And when I say good, I mean shitty

      • Anthony

        lmao

  • Mike N

    WTF?????

  • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

I’d love to have that guy’s job.

  • Adam

    D-mothereffin-Lowe.

  • Get Phelps Up

    Cervelli walkoff coming.

  • Effthisnoise

Alright damn it. Tex walk off redemption coming up

  • Kramerica Industries

We don’t all want pie anymore.

    We fucking DEMAND PIE.

  • Mike N

Huge DP!!!! NOW SCORE!!!!!! I wanna go the fuck to sleep!!

  • RBC

I guess the bird is the word….

  • Alkaline

Can I call a Cervelli walkoff?

  • flamingo

    Nice DP. Let’s win now.

  • Chilango

Well done Lowe. Good slider tonight. Let’s end this now I’m out of beers.

  • Pasqua

That bird? Buck Showalter in disguise.

  • stuart a

kay was wrong for a change,. bottom line the yansk cannot hit when it counts..

ibanez, jeter , and believe it or not swisher are over 300 with RISP rest of the team is pathetic…

    • Positive Scheister of Happiness

You can’t spell when it counts. Serious question: ARE YOU AN ACTUAL YANKEES FAN?

    • Need Pitching & Hitting

      ibanez is .230 wRISP…….even worse than cano…….

      • Get Phelps Up

        …give his a raise…..

        • Get Phelps Up

          *him

          • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

            …and and extension…maybe a parade too…if there’s time….

  • Positive Scheister of Happiness

Yankees aren’t 1 for 20 with men on. They’ve had the Raul HR and A-Rod hit and I thought one more…from memory without checking the box score.

    • The Real Greg

      They are 3-10 with RISP.

  • Captain_Turbo

All right then, how about a run to end this one, fellas?

  • The Real Greg

I wonder if Bobby dares to leave Padilla out there.

    • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Sadly no. That would’ve been great.

  • Austin Aunelowitzky

    Tex walk off.

    • Austin Aunelowitzky

Really Tex, I mean it, just walk off the field now.

  • The Real Greg

Bobby V was scared into a pitching change

  • Kramerica Industries

    Mountain Man Miller.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

really do not like october tex

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

Hit another soft grounder, Teix. Great cleanup hitter.

  • MannyGeee

    Oh, Ok…. Fuck that.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

please cano a homer is our only hope

  • The Real Greg

By the way the reason Tex is ahead of Cano is to allow Tex to get good pitches. Plus if Tex was behind Cano, they would pitch around Cano.

  • Cy Pettitte

Nova is warming up…now or never guys.

    • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Maybe being shunned till the 12th inning gets him psyched to prove he can pitch.

  • Hummingbird S.

Teix has left 9 on base. That’s simply amazing.

  • j-rod

I know we’re all excitable right now, but what is the rational argument for using Tex in the four hole?

    • The Real Greg

      Look up. I told you.

      • j-rod

So the sox would have walked cano w/ mulitple base runners on and less than outs all night?

      • j-rod

So the sox would have walked cano w/ mulitple base runners on and less than two outs all night?

    • Adam

So who would be the emergency catcher now?

    • TomH

Jeter, Swisher, ARod, Tex–right-handed against Lester. Then maybe Cano, having a down year against lefties might encounter a fastball with righties on base?

  • Karl Krawfid

    Cervelli will end this.

    Screaming around the bases.

    • Captain_Turbo

      Fist Pump of Fury!

    • Positive Scheister of Happiness

How great would that be? Glorious it would!

  • Adam

Wow, Cervelli with the seriously changed batting stance.

  • dkidd

time for a cervellian 72-hopper up the middle

  • Chilango

Should have nailed this in the ninth. C’mon guys.

    • Anthony

This game would be over if not for Soriano… don’t get me wrong he’s been absolutely life-saving this season but he definitely hasn’t been sharp lately.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Great at bat.

  • Effthisnoise

    Lets go grandy

  • Get Phelps Up

    Cervelli rocking the 1.000 OBP.

  • Positive Scheister of Happiness

    This strike zone SUCKS!

  • BigBlueAL

Miller gets Tex and Cano out but walks Cevelli??

  • Adam

Woops, reply fail above. But who would be the emergency catcher?

    • Get Phelps Up

      Ibanez, I think.

  • CUYanks

Pinch hit for Ibanez against LHP?

    • The Real Greg

I don’t know if they have anybody left.

    • Positive Scheister of Happiness

      Jones-in’ for some JONES!!!!

  • Captain_Turbo

Well, it’s an HR or strikeout here.

    • Captain_Turbo

      Wrong again, idiot.

  • Mike N

Oh, please. End this game now, Raul. I am so sleepy. PLEASE!

  • BigBlueAL

2 more walks and we are in the clear!!

  • Raul Ibanez AKA Tom Marvolo Riddle

Gotta pinch hit Raul here. I know he just walk Curtis, but Miller destroys LHH.

  • Effthisnoise

Praying for back to back wild pitches here

  • Kramerica Industries

I guess better than Andruw, right? Not feeling Ibanez vs. LHP.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting

Great time for the first time.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

And who started the rally? Cervelli, who they banished to AAA all season. He should have been up here all year giving us energy.

    • CG

Agree, it was messed up to send him down for chris stewart.

But then again, we wouldnt have had the fun of seeing CS get on base over and over again with batted balls that 95% of the time, for anybody else, are outs.

    • DC

      STFU

  • Kramerica Industries

Raul Ibanez with the night of his fucking life! Well done, Sir.

    • Tom Q

  • Adam

Call me crazy, but some special things are happening with this team over last couple of weeks.

  • toad

    Ibanez. Professional hitter.

  • Bartolo’s Colon

16 hits and 4 runs, thank mo the yanks won that

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

And this just goes to show you that Girardi should just throw his binder in the East River. Clutch hitters gonna clutch hit, matchups be damned.

  • The Real Greg

    The Count defeats the Devil!

  • BigBlueAL

I mustve cursed out this team 100X tonight (and 1000000X this season) but God damnit what a freaking win!! One more win and not only are the division champs but the #1 seed in the AL.

  • TomH

    Great win. Raul the Great!

Bullpen shot. Tomorrow there must, MUST, be a blowout.

    • CUYanks

At least Boston’s is shot too.

      • Get Phelps Up

And we face Dice k tomorrow.

    • BigBlueAL

Joba, Robertson and the LHP are fine. Kuroda can get thru 6 they should be fine as long as they dont go extras again.

    • forensic

All they really may not have is Soriano. And it’s the last game of the season, if they win he gets a couple days off anyway. All hands on deck if he thinks he can go.

  • JRod

Voldemort makes Sauron & Vader his personal bitches. What the hell, throw in the stay thirsty guy too.

  • Rozay

I wonder if Pineda is attending any of the games here

  • Scheister

Didn’t that ball hit Cervelli? I’ll take it but, yeah.

    • TomH

Umps want to get back to the hotel, have a drink, etc.

      • CUYanks

This isn’t wiffleball. You aren’t out on a peg.

        • Winter

If you’re going to be snarky learn the rules first. A baserunner hit by a batted ball is out.

          • CUYanks

Oh, I thought you were talking about the throw. Touche Touche. Apologies all around.

        • Scheister

          From the official rule book Rule 7.08: the runner is out if “He is touched by a fair ball in fair territory before the ball has touched or passed an infielder. The ball is dead and no runner may score, nor runners advance, except runners forced to advance. EXCEPTION: If a runner is touching his base when touched by an Infield Fly, he is not out, although the batter is out;

Rule 7.08(f) Comment: If two runners are touched by the same fair ball, only the first one is out because the ball is instantly dead.

If runner is touched by an Infield Fly when he is not touching his base, both runner
          and batter are out.”

Rule 7.09 is also relevant. The runner is not out if 1) the ball was first deflected by a fielder or 2) if the umpire is convinced that the ball went through or past the fielder untouched, and in the umpire’s judgment no other infielder had the chance to make a play on the ball. If, in the judgment of the umpire, the runner deliberately and intentionally kicks such a batted ball on which the infielder has missed a play, then the runner shall be called out for interference.”
However, if in the umpire’s judgment the runner intentionally kicks the batted ball, the runner shall be called out for interference.

If a runner is touched by a batted ball in foul territory he is not out though.

          • CG

I just watched the cervelli run about 10 times in a row… the ball may have hit him, but from the rules posted about 15 posts above this one, he shouldn’t have been out anyway. If “the umpire is convinced that the ball went through or past the fielder untouched, and in the umpire’s judgment no other infielder had the chance to make a play on the ball”, the runner can be safe. IMO, the ball went past 3B and SS had no chance to make a play.

      • Scheister

So I’m not crazy, it may have actually hit him, right?

        • Winter

I couldn’t tell, but it seemed quite close.

          • Scheister

I was like, CERVELLI! But everyone acted as if it didn’t hit him. Strange, surprised Bobby V didn’t argue.

        • forensic

It didn’t appear to be deflected off him, but it was dangerously close.

        • Bartolo’s Colon

i thought it did hit him, so i watch it in slo mo. it didn’t hit him, but it looks liked it, it bounced off the dirt when it was right next to his foot, so it appeared to hit his foot, but it didn’t

  • Dela G

    great win

  • forensic

Cervelli was dangerously close to running into that ball. Boy would that have sucked.

  • CUYanks

Have to root for the Rangers to lose tonight. Then if NYY win the AL East, they’re guaranteed to be the number 1 seed, correct?

    • BigBlueAL

They are guaranteed to be the #1 seed regardless as long as they win tomorrow. Finishing tied with Texas gives the Yankees the #1 seed.

      • CUYanks

Yes, but with a loss tonight by Texas, even a win on a 1-game playoff with Bal would give the Yankees the number 1 seed, I believe.

        • CUYanks

          Or division vía O’s loss.

          • BigBlueAL

Interesting question cause the extra win from game 163 would technically put the Yankees 1/2 ahead of the A’s.

Lets just hope the Yankees win tomorrow and make everything else moot :-)

            • CUYanks

Yeah, I think that 1 game won’t help, so you’re right in that scenario the A’s could have the number 1 seed over the Yankees. (but I’m not sure)

    • Hall and Nokes

You wished it, and now the A’s are ahead!

The only thing standing between us and the AL East crown is Dice K and his 7.68 ERA. If Oakland can win 1 of 2 we can get best record as well. Amazing that there’s such a fine line between #1 seed and #5.

    • BigBlueAL

It doesnt matter if Texas wins both, Yankees win tomorrow they are the #1 seed.

  • The Real Greg

A guy who alot of people thought should have been cut in the preseason now may have won the Yankees a division title.

jj and AKA Tom I have my Rutgers essay completed. You guys want to email me? Or give me your emails?

    Go A’s!

  • CUYanks

Correct me if I’m wrong, but a Texas loss tonight GUARANTEES we cannot be facing Verlander 2 games in a 5-game series.

    • BigBlueAL

If Oakland sweeps and the Yankees lose tomorrow the A’s are the #1 seed.

      • CUYanks

Thank you! You found the 1 possibility here. Underscores the need to win tomorrow.

  • BigBlueAL

Not for nothing but not sure I want the A’s to win the division. Not looking forward to Texas winning the Wild Card game and playing the Yankees in the ALDS. Though how freaking awesome would it be if the Orioles beat Texas in the Wild Card game and play the Yankees in the ALDS.

    • Rocky Road Redemption

I want the O’s OUT. Before the ALDS. Just out of spite.

      • Anthony

I’m so inclined to agree with you even if the Rangers are such a good team lmao.

      So awesome.

    • CUYanks

I like the idea that if Oak wins tomorrow, it’s basically like Oak/Tex skipped game 162 and decided to go straight to the 1-game playoff.

      • CUYanks

        *wins tonight, I mean.

    • Get Phelps Up

Texas will have burned Darvish (I assume) so I actually feel good about a series against them if they are a WC. And also, it would be hilarious to see them let that division slip away.

  • Eddard reboot v.1.0

They mentioned this in the broadcast- There is something wrong with the Tigers, who have the 7th best record in the AL, being the only team sitting pretty and they get to host Games 1 and 2. What an advantage. There’s something really wrong about that.

The other 4 playoff teams, clearly superior all season, have to fight it out for who gets 1 and 2 seeds and who has to play a 1 game WC. ANd one of these 4 is going to have to travel across country to play in that 1 game WC. There’s something wrong about the way they set this up.

  • Rocky Road Redemption

The Orioles have to be so pissed right now. They had a chance to tie us when we were down 4 runs in the 14th against Oakland, a chance to pull ahead when we were down 4 against Toronto, and now a chance to tie us when we were down by 2 in the ninth against the Red Sox.

Memo to Orioles fans: FUCK YOU. Now you know how we’ve felt all second half.
