Rakin’ Ramiro continues to rake in Mexico

By

Brian Cashman confirmed to Chad Jennings that RHP Dellin Betances is dealing with a minor groin problem, which is why he hasn’t pitched in the Arizona Fall League in over a week now. The shoulder problem that kept him on the shelf for several weeks at the end of the season is no longer an issue.

Meanwhile, Mike Ashmore reports that both IF David Adams and RHP Mark Montgomery will play in the AzFL Rising Stars Showcase. That’s not so much an All-Star Game in the sense that they pick the players who have performed the best this year, they usually pick the bigger name prospects. I’m surprised they didn’t take OF Slade Heathcott over Adams, though I guess the league’s outfield situation was already overcrowded.

AzFL Scottsdale (7-2 loss to Peoria) Tuesday’s game
2B David Adams: 0-3, 2 BB, 1 K
C Austin Romine: 1-4, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 PB

AzFL Scottsdale (4-3 win over Mesa) Wednesday’s game
CF Slade Heathcott: 1-4, 1 R, 2 K
RHP Mark Montgomery: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 2 K — nine of 16 pitches were strikes (56%)

AzFL Scottsdale (6-3 win over Surprise) Thursday’s game
3B David Adams: 0-4
C Austin Romine: 1-2, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 CS
DH Slade Heathcott: 0-3, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 CS

AzFL Scottsdale (8-4 loss to Mesa) Friday’s game
2B David Adams: 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB — seven walks and four strikeouts so far
DH Austin Romine: 2-5, 1 RBI, 2 K
RHP Dan Burawa: 0.2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 0 K, 0/2 GB/FB — only seven of 19 pitches were strikes (37%)

AzFL Scottsdale (8-8 tie with Phoenix in ten innings) Saturday’s game
RF Slade Heathcott: 0-3, 3 BB, 1 SB, 2 CS — nine walks in ten games
C Austin Romine: 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 2 BB, 2 PB – .303/.425/.364 with seven walks and six strikeouts
RHP Zach Nuding: 4 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 6/2 GB/FB — 38 of 63 pitches were strikes (60%)
RHP Mark Montgomery: 1.1 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 0/2 GB/FB — 11 of 13 pitches were strikes

The Puerto Rican League season starts in about a week and a half and the rosters haven’t been fully released yet, but word on the street is that 2B Angelo Gumbs will play there this winter. He missed basically the entire second half of the season with an elbow injury suffered on a swing.

  1. Cano fan #1 says:

    Ramiro Peña 2 HR? Unbelievable

  2. Bavarian Yankee says:

Answer: because being on base was was not as fun as the smiling contest with Nick Swisher in the dugout. Question: why does Ramiro Pena not hit in a Yankee uniform?

  3. Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

Zack Arneson is pitching for the Melbourne Aces in the Australian Winter League. Kyle Perkins, the Australian catcher the Yankees signed as a 16-year old is pitching now. He’s playing for the Canaberra Calvary in the AWL as well.

  4. tyrone sharpton says:

Maybe put Pena at shortstop, and put jeter in right next year? he’ll probably be the next joe iglesias if all works out well

    • IRememberCelerinoSanchez says:

Neither of those things have even a 5 percent chance of happening. Jeter is not moving to RF, and Pena isn’t even on the 40-man (when he was DFAed, not one team claimed him on waivers). If Pena starts even one game for the Yanks at SS next season, the season will have gone horribly wrong.

  5. LouDog says:

Jeter in RF and Pena at short. How about not even a 0.1% chance of happening. That is why I am saying it was a joke

  6. Robinson Tilapia (never missed an opportunity to namedrop Chuck Cary) says:

Why can’t we have guys like Ramir……..oh.

  7. Steve S. says:

Wouldn’t it be great if some of these games were actually televised? *sigh*
