The 1996 Yankees will always be very special to me because that was my first championship as a fan. The 1995 team gave me my first real taste of soul-crushing defeat, and prior to that the Yankees didn’t do much contending (thanks 1994 strike!). The 1996 squad were legit underdogs against the Braves, who had a Hall of Fame rotation and were in the middle of an unprecedented run of division titles. Bobby Cox’s team mopped the floor with the Bombers in the Bronx in Games One and Two (combined score: 16-1), and I remember thinking the Yankees had basically no shot to win the series now that they were going to back to Atlanta for the next three games.
Today is the 16th anniversary of Game Four, when Jim Leyritz worked his three-run homer magic against Mark Wohlers. Based on some of Raul Ibanez‘s recent work, I imagine a homer of that magnitude would have crippled Twitter these days. The Yankees went on to win in extra innings to tie the series at two, and you all know what happened next. Andy Pettitte vs. John Smoltz, Joe Girardi chugging around the bases … good times.

Here is your open thread for this incredibly lame sports-less evening. The Giants and Tigers open the World Series tomorrow night and there’s no football on either. You’re going to have to find something else to occupy yourself with tonight. Anything but politics is fair game here, so have at it.

can you imagine the betting odds of the Yankees in ’96 after Game 2? must have been a pretty penny won by many Yankee fans.
I wonder if there was a prop bet for Girardi hitting a triple. I imagine that paid out the type of money that would cover for Jeter’s Miami property tax.

Man, what a great World Series. Granted I was only 8 at the time, so I didn’t fully appreciate it until later. I still go back and watch the World Series film though, probably once a year.
I remember coming to my dad, hat in hand (literally, I had been wearing a Yankee hat), to plead with him to let me stay up past my bed time to watch the games. “Dad, I know I got school tomorrow, but it’s the WORLD SERIES!!!”
My dad looked up from his office desk, smiled, and said “Are you kidding? I won’t let you go to bed. Go Yankees!”
My first World Series victory was 2009. I was 1 in 96.

at the same time, I DO have vivid memories of watching. I remember Tino sitting for a few games in favor of Cecil Fielder. Boggs sat for a good part of the series too if I’m not mistaken, with Charlie Hayes (as everyone knows from the iconic shot of the final out) taking over. Strawberry and Raines platooned in LF as did Leyritz and Girardi at C. PAUL O’NEILL sat in GAMES 3 AND 4. not so dissimilar from what happened with Swisher/A-Rod/Granderson this year, though the moves worked and nobody questioned them.
this reminds me that Torre was actually a decent manager before he started playing favorites. and suggests that Girardi, 4 years in, is not falling victim to doing so yet.

Man, you guys are in for a world of hurt when the Yanks eventually go through their period of mediocrity. Probably won’t last too long because of their resources and (current) level-headed management, but that day will come. And you folks will know what it feels like to be a Pirates fan.
I began following the Yanks around ’89. They had just enough talent to give a naive 9 year old hope (Rickey, Donny, Sax, Righetti, Barfield). That is until they would routinely get crushed by a team like the A’s.
Which all leads me to my thought of when the Yanks will next go through a mediocre period. And I’m not talking about ’08 either. I mean the kind of 3+ year period where making the playoffs would be a long shot. I suppose the addition of all the extra playoff teams would increase that likelihood, but you know what I mean.
Perhaps when Jeter and Mo are gone. CC, Alex, Tex, Cano (presumably) will be in the tail-ends of their careers. Just looking at those names, they’ll have a ton of money coming off the books, but very few perennial contenders are built primarily through free agency. Especially in today’s game where there are so many big spenders.
Its impossible to predict that far into the future, but I’m curious as to when we’ll be rooting for a team with a border-line laughable roster. This is the sort of thing that keeps me up at night.
I’ve never experienced it, but I’ve made peace with the inevitability of it. That’s partly why I don’t get all pissy around here when the Yankees have the best record in the league and make it to the ALCS. I know it won’t last forever, and I will savor every last good team the Yankees field while I can.
This will hurt, but I’ll love them more than ever.
I really have to appreciate the fact that the worst Yankee team of my lifetime won 89 games and would have made the playoffs by today’s rules.

I was just a year older. I can remember every game of this series so vividly though. I sat on my living room floor absolutely stunned when Leyritz hit that homer. “..back… at the track… at the wall… we are tied!!”

The amazing thing is that I was twenty-fucking-two in ’96 but, being a whole four years old in 1978, I absolutely consider this my first championship as well. We’re all in the same boat.

I’m 1970 and had the pleasure of attending most of the late 70′s playoff and WS games as a 7-8 year old with my late uncle (RIP) so I got ya there.

I was sick all of last week so I just started to watch Breaking Bad. In only five days I’ve finished the first three seasons. Definitely one of the best shows I’ve ever seen.
Hell yeah dude. It’s a great show. I was a bit late to the party as well (I watched them all over the summer) but it’s great.
I gotta say this though: The one thing I wish they did slightly differently, is endear me to Skylar more in the beginning. She always struck me as a bitch, so the stuff on her side, I didn’t really emotionally care about like I could have.
I can’t stand Skylar in this show. I watched the first four or five episodes when it first came out but I never saw any more after that, but I’m glad I started watching it. Aaron Paul does a great job acting, too.
I wish they handled Skylar more like Rita in the show Dexter. I don’t know if you’ve seen Dexter, but they did a great job of really making the audience like Rita. When she got suspicious of Dexter and started getting a bit bitchy, I didn’t feel resentment towards her. She was a good person, very innocent. Skylar…she was a bitch right from the start. I really had no sympathy for her character. I think they could have done a better job creating a liking of her to the audience, creating some tension with the audience about her plight and her decisions.
That’s a bit nitpicky though. It’s a great show, and I can’t wait until the next season.
I’ve heard a lot of good things about Dexter so that will probably be the next show that I end up starting. I just started season four and season five isn’t on Netflix yet so I’ll have to wait for that. I saw online that this upcoming season is actually the last one, so that kinda sucks.
I highly recommend Dexter. Great show. Great plot lines, great tension, great characters, and they did a truly excellent job mixing in a lot of dark humor.
Season 5 of Breaking Bad isn’t on Netflix yet? If you have Comcast as your service provider, they should have season 5 on demand there. That’s how I watched a lot of it if I missed the live airing.
I’ll start that after Breaking Bad is done here in a little bit. I’m pretty sure it’s not. I only saw seasons 1-4 on there about a week ago. I don’t even have Comcast. I’m stuck with Frontier because they’re the only internet provider in the part of Knoxville I’m at. Frontier sucks, too.
Damn. You could always stream it from somewhere, if you’re not opposed to it.
I might do that if they don’t have it on here soon. I got hooked on this show pretty quick. I think the only show that has hooked me faster than this one was 24.

Yeah, Gus was great. I think one of my favorite scenes in all the TV shows I’ve watched what the whole thing at the villa in Mexico. Shit was crazy!

I am starting Breaking Bad very very soon… I actually (speaking of late to the party) just wrapped up the final season of 24 last week… I had it on the shelf since the snow melted.

Can anyone tell me what the SWB Yanks will be called next season? Last I heard it was something about six finalists, not sure if they were done with that.
No decision. Here are the finalists, with words from MiLB.com on the thinking behind each.
Blast — The Blast combines the over-the-top fun of MiLB with the tough miners who unearth coal to fuel America’s industrial revolution. It’s also the sound of the Yankees of tomorrow blasting home runs in front of a packed house at PNC Field.
Black Diamond Bears — Paying homage of the rich coal mining history of the SWB area combined with the ferociousness of the black bear, no one will want to mess with them on the field. The natural setting of PNC Field will be the perfect den for the Black Diamond Bears.

It’s funny, I really disliked Trolley Frogs when I saw the list for the first time, but then eventually decided that’s the best one.

I did find myself considering Fireflies for that very reason, plus I kind of like firelies. Reminds me of summer and playing outside as a kid. Yet maybe I just have a thing for bugs. I still thinnk the Cleveland Spiders is one of the best names for a MLB team, yet shockingly it sent away in 1899 never to be used again! Spiders. I mean, come on. Who doesn’t like creepy, crawly spiders?
As for the handle, it will sunset after tonight. Just a remembrance of a poster past who I shoehorned into the recent theme of longer handles. And, oh yeah, Eddard. I actually like Eddard. I don’t agree with most of his posts, but I find him funny. I’m not sure he’s one actual person but maybe several.

Meh, almost all the fun has been taken out of basketball for me this season. I mean I’m usually only a casual observer anyway, but basketball is a sport where talent will win out and it’s not so much dedicated to strategy as it is athletic ability. Examples, in basketball, if you’re the fastest you can just outrun everybody on the court and you’ll score more often than not. Where as in football, you can be able to throw the ball 100yds in the air on a frozen rope but you need proper protection schemes and routes run to be successful, and in baseball you can have Adam Dunn level power, but if you can’t recognize a change up or a curve ball then you’re never going to amount to much.
With all of that said, in basketball the “on paper” match up is right more often than not, so I would be shocked if the finals aren’t Heat vs Lakers.

i follow football teams (nfl and ncaa) like a yankee fan. superbowl and bcs championships are absolute, raison d’etre. but hoop is so balletic and athletic i can enjoy watching any two teams play. i’m a clippers bandwagon fan, not because i think they’ll ever win everything but because they’re so damn fun. and because following the rockets the last ten years has been painful.
maybe it’s the paucity of sport this time of year.
and the tourney is pure pleasure.
I’m actually looking forward to this year’s college basketball season more than last year’s. I’m a UNC fan and I basically expected them to win the tournament last year and generally be perfect. When they weren’t perfect, and then didn’t win, it kind of felt like a typical Yankees season when they lose in the playoffs to an inferior team.
This year they’ve got a lot of new faces and guys returning from injuries and shouldn’t be more than a 3 or 4 seed come tournament time. And due to that, I’m looking forward to what they can do and hope they plant seeds that turn them into a title contender in a year or two. Of course, McAdoo is probably gone after this year and it seems like Kentucky is going to keep churning out super talented one-and-done teams for the immediate future. I can’t wait till Calipari gets busted there. I mean, I can’t wait till Calipari bolts and then the school gets busted for his actions.

So, some of the regulars on here know by now that I work at a head shop. What most of you don’t know is I suffer from moderate anxiety, and borderline crippling stage fright. So the owner just called and asked me to shoot a virtual video tour of the store that we can post on our Facebook and Head-shop finder posting. I’m proud to say I did it in 4 takes and spoke for 10 minutes straight in the fourth take with only stumbling over my voice once. I don’t care what any trolls say, this is the proudest I’ve been of myself in a while lol.
Congrats dude. You know that I did theater in high school, but it sure as shit wasn’t easy getting over the stage fright. I feel ya on that.

Haha, no, everything stayed behind the case doors and I did my best to keep myself out of frame for the most part.
All of my classes nowadays are annoyingly adamant about incorporating tech into the curriculum. Last year I had to interview a local congressman… it was SO awkward. Plus I hate the sound of my voice on any sort of media. You’d think taking a video would be nice and simple but its really a pain in the ass to have a nice finished product, so props.

Nice man. I never could do any scripted public speaking of any sort. I have no problem having an idea of what I want to say and winging it. Ask me to read off notes or a script and I am utterly hopeless.
I have an anxiety disorder myself. I used to get severe panic attacks.
My friends and I did a lot of fake wrestling stuff several years ago. We never performed in front of a real audience per se, but due to my massive physical limitations, I mostly did announcing. I always found it easy to do that even when looking at a camera. Just pretend like no one is there. Which really wasn’t hard to do as it usually wasn’t more than 2 or 3 people behind the camera anyway.
I have given oral presentations in college classes. What I always found works in those environments are to speak loud, clear and concise.

I can. Big mouth but a good manager. It’s not his fault everybody overrated the Marlins and they’re run by arguably the worst owner in all of professional sports.
Never liked him as a manager. At all. I thought it was such a cynical ploy by the Marlins to bring him in as manager.
I just can’t stand that franchise at this point. It’s probably even more intense because I really did embrace them for a while as an expansion team, with my fandom mostly split through, really, the dynasty years. Fool me once? Shame on you. They’re on to trying to fool people a third time.
He’s an asshole, but I think he’s an alright manager. Have you seen the E60 interview with him? It’s pretty damn funny actually. He’s a loud mouth and part of me likes that- but not an dumbass loud mouth like Bobby Valentine.
I feel terrible for Marlins fans. At least you can count them all one one hand. I think I really started to hate the Marlins when Griffey was stuck hitting his 600th home run in that place. I felt terrible for him.
I mean….the best seats I’ve ever had at a baseball game were at Joe Robbie/Pro Player/whateverthefuck Stadium. You could basically walk up at gametime and get the equivalent of $500 seats at YS3 for cheap. I had some great times there. It was baseball.
’97 wasn’t fun as a Yankee fan, but it was fun to live down in Miami at the time and embrace the team once the WS came. Even 2003 was fun up here. Rooted for the Yankees all the way, but got into the Hilton next to Grand Central Station and got to meet Jack McKeon and AJ.
They had their chance to really build a fanbase, but just didn’t get it. The old Cubans were never going to embrace them, as big as they are on baseball, because baseball was never a business in Cuba. The dismantling of the ’97 was the deathknell. There’s also just not enough fans down there that care about anything other than football.
I’m not even sure how much they care about football. At least pro-football. I went to a Dolphins game down there a couple years back. People didn’t know what the hell was going on.
They were there, though. The Dolphins and Hurricanes will always have a feverish fanbase.
I think Dwayne Wade finally won the city over, but who are we kidding…..if that team even slightly underachieves, they’ll stop showing up. The Heat fanbase is like a fanbase full of game thread posters. They will give up on that team so quickly…..
….then again, it’s been 11 years now since I’ve lived there. Maybe it’s changed….not.
It sucks, because Mickey Arison is a GREAT owner, one of my favorites in all of sports. As good as Mark Cuban. I’ve always thought the Heat and Knicks should switch cities. Each city deserves the other team so much more.
Florida isn’t a place for baseball teams. Even if the Yankees were down there nobody would go. I grew up in Cape Coral and used to go to a lot of Rays-Yankees games when I was a kid. I went to Game 5 in 2003 for my 11th birthday for a birthday gift from my brother. Even though the Yanks lost it was still pretty fun.
The Marlins are probably the worst run franchise in all of sports so I never hope they win another game. Watching them lose 90 games this year was awesome. It would have been even better if Pujols ended up there and they still ended up losing 85 games or so.
The Rays really should move. Lots of fanbases would kill for a team like that.
The Rays are a well run team. They’re just stuck in a shit hole for baseball. There’s only a few cities that can hold a baseball team that already don’t and that’s the problem.
Vegas is the untapped sports city in America, no sport wants to touch it though.
Hell, a city like Boston could support a 2nd team better than Tampa supports the Rays. I shudder to say it, but its the truth.

’97 was a BEAUTIFUL thing. The multicultural nature of the city really showed. Everyone had their player. You’d have Colombians driving around with the cars covered in Renteria stuff. You had your Cuban players. You had All-American Jeff Conine. Such a sweet them……then gone.
We’d be telling a different story if Huizenga hadn’t split that team up like he did.

I love ESPN poll questions, too. I answered all the ones regarding Ozzie today. More than, I think it was, 70% think he’ll manage again, and more than 60% or so think he should stop Tweeting. I’ll never understand how those answers won the majority.

I don’t think it’s impossible for him to manage again, but I put the chances as pretty remote. He’s carrying a ton of baggage now, always will, and would require a team to take a huge risk on him. I don’t see any team currently willing to do that.
Apparently there’s been talking of the Yanks looking at Kyle Lohse? Surprised it hasn’t come up here yet (or maybe it has and I missed it). His numbers look decent enough, I guess (2.86 ERA, 6.1 SO/9) but that is in a weaker division. What’s the opinion on him?

Kuroda came out of the NL West… but I guess he’s kind of the exception that proves the rule.
The NL Central isn’t really loaded with great hitters either. The Astros and Cubs were the two worst teams in the game. Lohse just doesn’t strike out enough guys, he’s 32, and this was the only year where he was an above average pitcher.
Sabathia, Pettitte, Hughes, Nova, and probably Kuroda. They’ve got Phelps waiting and hopefully Pineda at some point next year but I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t throw a pitch for them next year. No room for Lohse and he isn’t needed. He’s fine in St. Louis or somewhere else in the NL, but I wouldn’t trust him in Yankee Stadium.
And if the Yankees are serious about getting under that payroll mark I can’t see the Yankees going after him. Not to mention some team will overpay for him. If there’s any “interest” it’s to drive up his price.
I’d be elated if Kuroda came back. He was my favorite player this year. I hope he would, because as you said I don’t think Lohse will come particularly cheap.

Well that’s because it’s much more fun to watch every 9th hitter try to bunt his runners over than watch people like Fat Sloppy and Adam Dunn hit a baseball. The NL needs to get with the program and implement a DH rule. Pitchers hitting is just fucking stupid. It’s only a matter of time until the NL starts using a DH. And once that happens all of the DH haters will love having their team add another hitter to their everyday lineup. Funny how that will work.

Yea, like I said Kuroda was my favorite player. I’m feeling really good about Pettite coming back. In the case that Kuroda doesn’t return though, I really wonder what the Yanks will do. If they don’t look around it seems like it’ll be CC, Andy, Hughes, Nova, and Phelps, at least until Pineda gets back. I really like Phelps but I feel like he struggled a bit toward the end of the season.
He struggled in the playoffs, but it was his first year so you can’t hold that against him. He looks like he will be a solid number 3/4 starter which is perfectly fine.

Yea, I guess you have to take that into consideration. And he was getting shoved back and forth between the rotation and the pen, so maybe that contributed somehow too.
I still have my reservations about Nova, but if all goes well we’ll have Pineda by June.
I think Nova will be fine next year. I have higher expectations for him next year than I did this year. Hopefully it’s not a letdown again.
I’m not even thinking about Pineda to be honest. He’s gonna have at least a month of rehab in the minors and if the Yankees rotation is healthy with CC, Kuroda, Pettitte, and Nova/Phelps, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him stay in the minors all of next year from June/July until the September rosters expand.

I’d rather they’d look at Anibal Sanchez, assuming he doesn’t blame Girardi for his shoulder problems after his rookie season.
Sanchez would be a very nice pickup. I’d be fine with the rotation Knoxvillian suggested above, though.

My guess is his strong finish in Detroit will probably push his price higher than what I was initially figuring. He also had a strong finish, but I would have to go back and check to see who he was facing. If there were lots of Twins and Royals in there, then I’m not quite sure he’s proven to be an AL starter. Yeah, he kicked the Yankees butts in his postseason start, but I’m still convinced that the Tigers’ great showing had more to do with how the Yankees were hitting, or not hitting to be more accurate.
He only faced 3 teams that finished above .500 all year (the A’s – 5 ER in 5.2 innings, the Yankees – 7 ER in 3 innings, and the Angels – 3 runs in 7 innings) All of his other Tigers starts came against either the Twins, Royals, Indians or Blue Jays.

I’d rather have Kuroda too, especially since he’d be available on a one or at the most two-year deal. (I would go two years on him.) Sanchez is probably shooting for a five-year deal. Younger, but longer committment, and I believe Kuroda is the better pitcher.

If I am Kuroda, I am running for the hills. HE didnt re-sign with Los Doyers (presumably) because the lack of run support, and he had THE WORST run support of any Yankee pitcher this season….

I have no idea if Girardi was very tough on his young pitchers in Florida, or they just had some issues as many young pitchers do, or maybe he was tough but learned from it because I have seen little in Joe’s usage of pitchers to suggest he’s someone who abuses young pitchers.
I hope next years team doesn’t resemble this years Red Sox but I’m afraid it might. If CC’s hurt our rotation is in serious trouble. It’s very possible that Kuroda and Pettitte won’t resign leaving us a gaggle of 4 or 5 starters. The left side of the infield is aging and will look like Jurassic Park if they leave Jeter and Arod in the infield. We have no catcher and the Yankees won’t sign Swisher leaving us 2 lefthanded bats in Granderson and Gardner for our outfield, scarry. Soriano will bolt for free agency leaving us Rivera at 43 coming of major knee surgery as our closer. Wow, this will be Cashman’s toughest offseason ever especially if Hank holds to his budget.
I’m expecting the complete opposite. 95 wins and pretty much the same roster as this year minus Soriano and Swisher.
Nothing wrong with Jeter and A-Rod in the infield. Jeter can still hit and plays decent defense. A-Rod still plays good defense and I expect a .275/25/85 year from him if he can stay healthy.
This sounds like the exact same stuff I’ve heard every offseason, including the offseason we won the world series. Every year since then we’ve been in the playoffs. I’ve learned to not doubt cashman.

I expect the same exact results as 2012. slow start (bridge jumpers start jumping), scorching hot summer (everyone’s a fan), one or 2 real bad series (“tonight’s August 3rd game against Kansas City is MAKE OR BREAK for this season”), win the division (DOOOOMED), miss the world series again, and Pistol Pete will be back in October 2013 to remind us how screwed we are.
So if everything goes wrong it will be a bad year.

Worse than Russell Martin offensively in all categories. He’s been overrated since his rookie season. If there’s any catcher the Yankees sign I would prefer McCann even though he’s hurt and that’s saying something. The catching market sucks. The Yankees should be glad they have Russell Martin.
I believe he’s got one year of Arbitration left. I’d imagine if he’s at all worth having, the Rangers aren’t going to non-tender him. I suppose it’s possible another Russell Martin type situation presents itself though.
I really wish the Red Sox didn’t fire Valentine. I’d never get tired of hearing about stuff like this.

I was just reading the comment section of this article cause I can’t sleep…owww my brain…there was a person there arguing that the MLB should pull a NHL or NBA and expand to a 16 team playoff stating ‘it would add more fun, more drama, there would be a chance of more first/early round upsets. Am I the only person who thinks that’s a bad thing, not just in baseball but in all sports? I mean I watch playoff sports to find out who the best team is, not to see a .500 team get lucky and beat a team that it’s clearly better than.
