Yankees drop Nunez from ALCS roster, add Eppley
ByThe Yankees have replaced Eduardo Nunez on the ALCS roster with Cody Eppley, the team announced. Jayson Nix was moving fine in the ALDS, so his left hip flexor strain appears to be a non-issue going forward. The Tigers have a very right-handed pitching staff, so the extra righty bat wasn’t imperative. Joba Chamberlain is also on the roster despite the bruise on his right elbow after getting hit with a broken bat.
The addition of Eppley gives the Yankees a dozen pitchers and just a four-man bench, and could be an indication that David Phelps will get the Game Two start tomorrow. It could also mean they’re starting Hiroki Kuroda and CC Sabathia on short rest in Games Two and Three, respectively, and want the extra arm in case they can’t throw as many pitches as usual. Who knows. Right now the only official pitching plan is Andy Pettitte in Game One tonight.

Why wouldn’t Hiroki start game 2?
3 days rest. Guy who need more rest gonig on short rest
We would only need about 4 innings from Phelps which is doable. With the off day after, we can use the bullpen completely. Its not perfect by any stretch but with the CC complete game, the arms are fresh. Figure with Lowe, Eppley, Rapada, and Logan, you can matchup your way through 2 to 3 innings hopefully and then you go to Robertson and Soriano. Joba obviously helps out if he’s ok which he probably is cause they kept him on the roster.
Our pitching has been awesome now that they are healthy. No need to handicap them by pitching anyone on three days rest. Plus CC has thrown a lot of pitches lately.
Not Eppley for ARod?
Too bad.
Eppley for ARod AND Granderson.
You mean Kurtis with a K?
They’re probably going to pitch CC game 3 on 3 days rest though, I assume. Its a wonder this guys arm doesn’t fall off.
Probably not if they P Phelps in game 2.
Not so long ago every single SP went on 3 days rest. It’s really not that crazy to P on 3 days rest.
Was thinking that they should start:
Pettite
Kuroda
Sabathia
Hughes
Pettite
Kuroda
Sabathia
For game 2 you have Phelps, Lowe and a bunch of arms to finish is Kuroda can only give you 3-5 innings. It also lines him up Pettite, Kuroda and Sabathia for games 5-6 on either regular or extra rest.
Kuroda needs the extra day and so does CC. Go with Phelps in game 2 and if it doesn’t go well go to Lowe to eat innings. Kuroda has never pitched this many innings in career do he needs the extra day
I have no issues with this though I’d probably flip Hughes and Sabathia. Have CC have normal rest for the game 4 start and short rest for a less likely game 7.
Kuroda is the Yankees second best pitcher and wass their most consistent all year. He needs to be lined up to pitch twice this series and starting him in game 2 does that.
Start Kuroda, Phelps and Lowe can back him up and the team is in good position.
Kuroda is not gonna pitch on short rest. CC goes in 4 on reg rest and back in 7 on short rest is good for us. With phelps starting game 2 it’s also Hughes normal day to throw a bullpen 25-50 pitches. Save the bullets for game 2 then. It’s the right move.
Having to use a fifth starter in the playoffs is ridiculous. Can’t believe this is the schedule the Yankees got as the top seed.
Agreed. The good news is the Yankees actually have one you don’t want to vomit thinking about.
It’s the ALCS: Hunger Games.
That movie is overrated.
This is clearly ALCS: Battle Royale.
Game 1 Petite
Game 2 Phelps
Game 3 Kuroda
Game 4 CC
There will be no Game 5
Great I love it
It’s enough to bottle ones mind. That’s a heck of a lot of pitchers, and a small bench. They should’ve have added Joba to the DL (when he got hurt in the DS) then he’d be out for this series, then picked up Eppley for Jobber then, if Jobber was okay, swapped the two for the WS roster.
The only reason you take less pitchers in the playoffs is because you only need 4 starters. That is not the case now thanks to this absurd schedule.
This is simply the same roster as the regular season, when you have a 5 man rotation. They played this roster for 162 games, should be ok for 7 more.
Joba isnt hurt and Detroit has all RHP. Nunez wont be a defensive replacement. He wasnt needed.
Keep Jackson off the bases and pitch carefully to Cabrera and Fielder. The rest of their lineup seems pedestrian.
I think normal rest for Kuroda and Sabathia is worth giving Phelps a shot in Game 2 since they shouldn’t need CC for a seventh game.
Phelps on a short leash for a single game is better than a chain reaction of potential short-rest problems.
Why not add Garcia, who can give you innings, instead of Eppley? He’s not the second coming of Darren O’Day, in case they were dreaming…
And why is Gardner on the roster if he cannot hit? Dickerson can run, field and hit, so why not get a complete player in there?
Garcia is redundant with Lowe. And by game 5-6, Phelps is also available for long stretches. No need for Garcia.
Gardner is on the roster for two simple similar words… Dave Roberts. Kid still can fly and create runs
Garcia is a scrub who was lucky to remain on the Yankee roster for the entire season. As for Dickerson, can people please stop gushing over this guy? He is just a AAAA type player at best. If he was actually as talented as some of you guys fool yourselves into thinking then he would be spending his entire season in the minors off the 40 man roster. He nothing more than the outfielder version of Cervelli.

Garcia has come through in important starts and pitched effectively from the pen this season. He has experience which can be a big plus in the postseason.
I’m not gushing about Dickerson. But he can hit, which is something Girardi has admitted he is reluctant to do with Gardner. If you have a short bench, you can ill afford a reserve who is not a complete player.
Garcia is murdered by Cabrera. I would not like to see him pitch against Detroit ever again.
Everyone is murdered by Cabrera. That’s why he is always being pitched around.
“Everyone is murdered by Cabrera.”
He’s Venezuelan, not Columbian.
OH SNAP.
I dont have any problems with CC throwing game 3, it would be the first time since he joined the Yanks that he would pitch on 3 days rest, unlike when he was on the Brewers. Plus I know that Verlander will be going up against the Yankees for that game so it only makes sense. Im not worried about our pitching since they have been spot on in the ALDS.
More worried about our lineup but it looks as if they might be starting to get swing the bats finally.
He pitched on 3 days rest in all of 09 post season pretty much.
U mean Kuroda and CC in 3 and 4. If you start Phelps in game 2.
If they are going with Andy-Phelps-Kuroda-CC, then why did Hughes make the roster? Wouldn’t he be redundant with Lowe in there as well? I think this points to them using either (or both) Kuroda or CC on short rest here, with maybe Hughes going game 4.
Because you want Hughes going in game 6 instead of Phelps.
Hughes would make the roster whether he starts or not because he would still be one of our top options in the bullpen. But I think it is pretty certain that Hughes will start and Kuroda will not go on short rest. They will also probably try to avoid CC on short rest, which is why it is likely he would go in Game Four and only go on short rest if the series goes all seven.
I think the rotation ends up being Pettitte, Phelps, Kuroda, CC, Hughes, Pettitte, CC
NO NUNEZ?!?! WE ARE FUCKED! FUCKED, I SAY!
Love,
Eddard
I think girardi is making a mistake going with phelps instead of Phil Hughes he give yankees better chance to win he earn n he been there before
Thing is Hughes would be pitching on 2 days rest if he starts game 2. So the best option would be Phelps or Kuroda. If Yanks win tonight, we will see Phelps on mound for Game 2 so Kuroda n CC get the xtra rest. If we lose, Kuroda on mound for Game 2 n CC on for Game 3.
Seriously? Hughes pitched on Thursday, remember??
I think girardi is making a mistake with phelps instead of putting Phil Hughes to pitch Game 2 hughes has a better chance to win he been there before phelp has not
Is this a joke?
did u see Phil’s last outing he pitch good 4 hit and one earn run come on going with phelps is to much pressure for him u going to see the kid get hit hard then we going to see what u have to say
But Hughes would only be on 2 games rest.
Exactly. Thank you Matt.
Eppley?! i pray that Nova is hurt or something because Eppley is good but if someone gets railed early Nova would be great to pick that slack up, even for only long relieving. Here’s to getting Pineda back for next season. How many people forgot about THAT guy?
Nova has been poor recently. Bullpen has just had a day off. Hopefully Andy gives them a reasonable rest tonight. But Monday is an off day: even if Phelps leaves after 2, Lowe ought to be able to fill in with at least a couple. Then there’s – what? – 6 other relievers to chip in.
I never forget.
Sincerely, Jesus Montero
I think leaving Nunez off the roster is a mistake. Dude was a spark for the lineup and I know you have redundancy in Gardner but he doesn’t seem like he added much in the ALDS. I am normally not an intangibles type of fan but in a short series you go with the guys who have been making a difference and I feel that Nunez was doing that for our poor performing lineup.
Agree. Keep Nunez, dump Arod.
Arod’s throws from 3rd are not much better than Nunez’s.
YES!
No need for Nunez – Arod is the righty bat off the bench, so sad, but true
They should have added Francisco Cervelli.
It is great to have three catchers!
Can we get Austin Jackson back for. Granderson. What a bad trade!
