Gumbs makes winter ball debut in Puerto Rico

By

The Yankees have signed 19-year-old Dominican right-hander Anyelo Gomez to an unknown bonus according to the Dominican Prospect League. The reports says he stands 6-foot-3, 175 lbs. and “sits 89-92 mph with deception and occasionally down hill life with a feel for curve and change.” Click the link for some video. Here’s the weekly update…

  1. The Moral Majority is Neither says:

    Welcome Anyelo Gomes!

Anyone seen an update on Omar Luis Rodriguez? He’s the 19 year old Cuban lefty that got $4M+ back in June pending a visa. The more young arms, the better.

  2. Back in the Saddle says:

Mike–I agree on Mustelier getting a look this spring, but do you think Slade H. will receive a non-40 man invite to spring training? Also, a curious triad of lefties in Cedeno, Nuno and Rondon. You have not been overly fond of Nuno or Rondon, yet spring training invite also?

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

With Nuno and Rondon, what I’m reading here is that it’s about just not having standout stuff. If a guy like Nuno can cut back on mistakes, especially now as he enters AAA, I’m guessing that will tell the tail.

I assume Mustellier gets a look, especially if the team is looking for additional bench options and would like to see if someone can fill that on the cheap moving forward into 2014.

  3. Dan says:

This will be an interesting year for the farm, a lot of the top 10 prospects might get some AA time so we will have a better idea of who is legit prospects and who is trade bait. Depuala is the one I’m most interested in watching I think he might end up in AA by August if he dominates high A

    • Steve (different one) says:

Agree. I know this is wildly optimistic, but were the farm system to have a good year (guys stay healthy and progress), the system has the opportunity to be stacked this time next year. Things don’t usually work out like that, but the talent is there. It just needs to move up a level.

      • Havok9120 says:

Yeah, the next year or two could be awfully exciting down on the farm. I’m looking forward to it.

Meanwhile, you really aren’t supposed to voice this much optimism during the early offseason. You’ve been here awhile now, you should know better.

  4. endlessjose says:

Why didn’t LHP Jose Diaz the Yankees 2012 14th round pick pitch for Puerto Rico? Was that the same LHP Diaz that was suspeneded for PEDS?

    • zs190 says:

Do you see any draft picks at all in winter ball? Pretty sure these leagues play to win so super young guys would not crack the roster.
