Yankees plan to keep Cesar Cabral this offseason

By

Via Chad Jennings: The Yankees intend to keep 2011 Rule 5 Draft pick Cesar Cabral on the 40-man roster this winter and give him another look in Spring Training. The left-hander impressed in camp this year, but he fractured his elbow in late-March and missed the entire season.

Because he spent the year on the DL, the 23-year-old Cabral will still be subject to the Rule 5 rules next year, meaning he’ll have to break camp with the big league team and stay on the 25-man active roster. However, Jennings says he would not need to stay there all year and could be optioned to Triple-A at some point. That’s news to me. Cabral had a legitimate chance to beat out Clay Rapada for the second left reliever’s job this spring, but the injury took him out of the running. It’ll be interesting to see how he does next year and how that factors into the club’s decision about his future.

Cesar “Stairs” lives for another year.

He’d have to be active for 90 days first.

Rule 5 Draft draftees must stay on the MLB roster all season. If they go to the DL, they must be active for at least 90 days — so if the draftee misses a whole season, they must be on the active roster for 90 days the following season to satisfy the Rule 5 Draft requirements.

Not to mention this is his 2nd time being drafted in the Rule 5 draft, so he doesnt have to be offered back to the Red Sox. He can choose free agency if he doesnt want to stay with the Yankees.

    Big whoop…

Cool. Still young and has some upside. Should be interesting if he can pitch his way into the MLB bullpen.

I guess I haven’t been following the 40 man roster crunch enough to know whether or not I think he’s worth a spot. Does anyone know who is rule 5 eligible this year that needs protection?

    • Travis L.

Brett Marshall, Nik Turley, Abe Almonte and Addison Maruszak. They are the most probable to get protected, although not all of them will. I’m assuming Turley and Marshall are locks, due to Turley being a lefty and Marshall being the next closest SP to the majors.

Thanks, Turley and Marshall for sure need to be on the 40 man. I would probably keeping Cabral on the 40 man rather than Almonte or Maruszak, I doubt either one of them could make a big league team now, let alone stick for a full season.

Its almost worth it just so the “Stairs” jokes can live for another Spring Training.
