Update: Jeter day-to-day with mild left ankle inflammation
By6:26pm: The Yankees announced that Jeter has been diagnosed with mild inflammation in the ankle after a precautionary MRI and is day-to-day. X-rays came back clean.
4:24pm: The Yankees have sent Jeter to the doctor for what Girardi called “precautionary” reasons. No word on whether they did any tests, stuff like that.
11:45am: Derek Jeter has been scratched from this afternoon’s game with what Joe Girardi called a “cranky” ankle. The Cap’n felt some stiffness in his surgically-repaired ankle during batting practice and they yanked him from the lineup. He was slated to play shortstop. Girardi said they’ll proceed day by day right now. I’m honestly surprised it took this long for something like this to happen.

We’re gonna see an awful lot of Nunez at SS this year. Sure hope he’s made some improvements on his throwing.
Oh God, oh no…
Sometimes I hate the unfettered, 24/7 news access to every single ache and pain that an athlete feels. This is the type of news that is begging to be overreacted to.
38 year old SS coming off of an ankle fracture/surgical repair missing a game due to pain shouldn’t actually be much of a surprise to anyone.
Better be not so cranky by April 1.
Bound to have recovery issues like this. Hope it’s minor. We sure have defensive SS issues. I wonder if the Stadium crew can landscape the grass so the balls track right at Jeter and Youk (or Musty?). Maybe Nunez should go 6-4-3 even in non-double play situations.
They could always restore the central infield to prairie..
AnEduardoNunezSaysWhat?
Cano to SS, Nunez to 2B, Jeter at 1B/DH until Arod returns.
They’d be ducking all the way to Brooklyn on the Nunez double-play pivot throws.
He’s more machine now, than man…
Bound to happen but, yes, let’s keep that crankiness to a bare minimum, please.
Yeah a 38 year old SS who is coming off of ankle sugery has a cranky ankle…this site is running out of words to explain injuries.I guess you used cranky so we wouldn’t get worried?
I try not to be a troll and only say negative things but lets be honest everyday I look at yankees news it’s always negative news.Cashman better have an ace up his sleeve because Nunez is terrible at SS.
It’s how it’s being described in the telecast as well. Not Mike’s words.
I’m sure Mike appreciates the support.
Yeah….
…Mike didn’t coin that term.
Girardi called it “cranky,” hence the quotes and sentence that says “…what Joe Girardi called a ‘cranky’ ankle.”
Otherwise known as a “crinkle”.
“crankle”?
That just makes me think of a venerial disease (maybe appropriate due to Jeter’s bedroom activities). Or, some kind of illegal drug.
what is cashman waiting for.he has to go and find a replacement for jeter. you have castro in Chicago and andrus in texas.now is the time to see what it will take to find a new ss.
lol
They will be selling helmet gear in the 1st base stands this year…
New revenue stream!
somewhere, keith olbermann’s mom senses a disturbance in the force…
He’ll be sent to the spice mines of Kessel for sure!
lol, touche
Jeter should have played today.
It’s not like the cranky ankle will limit his mobility!
#JeterStatue
think I saw you the other day at the supermarket…using that power scooter to stock up on more beer, t.v. dinners and chips.
Talk about being able to move…wouldn’t want to get in your way for that last donut.
Cranky ankle, we should not look too much into this situation. As one commenter indicated he expected this way before this time.
Give it a day to rest and ease back into the game. I have had a few surgeries on my feet. None to the extent as Jeter did but he’ll be experiencing some discomfort for some time which will not be anything more than the ankle building itself up. I hope.
Let’s hope it’s nothing more than that, ’cause it’s gonna be a whole lot of Nunez and a little bit of Nix if’n Derek can’t go…
as long as he doesn’t have “cankles”…all will be fine in the end.
the way this Spring Training is going…
Does it even matter at this point? Team is trash with no A-rod, Tex, Granderson…Tex gaining on A-rod in the worst contract in baseball race.
Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy?
mama, just killed a man
i was aiming for first base
but it hit him in the face
bonunean rhapsody
Well done.
Not too worried, pretty typical coming back from an injury like that, especially when first starting to put stress on it.
We’re going to stink.
my cousin who lives in staten island keeps hearing the rumors that when Teixeira performed on broadway he fell backstage and that’s when he hurt his wrist.
