Friday Night Open Thread

The Yankees got walloped by the Tigers on Friday afternoon, as yet again the part of the team that was supposed to be a strength (pitching!) was its downfall. Both Ivan Nova and the bullpen were awful, meaning the Yankees will somehow have to beat both Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander if they plan on escaped Detroit with a series win. I foresee disappointment.

Here is your open thread for the evening. The Rangers and Knicks are both playing, plus the Mets are playing and MLB Network is airing a game as well. I’m not sure if Extra Innings is still in a free preview, but if it is you have that as well. Talk about whatever you like here, enjoy.

Can’t say I’m surprised at this point, Hughes’ rehab start is cancelled (I assume because he’s not ready?).

  2. Bob Buttons says:

Victor Cruz wants 11M a year supposedly. I say 8M a year the most, or GTFO. Good luck trying to find a team willing to pay over 8M and give up a pick.

Though his absurd asking price isn’t exactly a good sign, since he’s with Roc Nation.

    • trr says:

      can he play SS?

    • vicki says:

jerry reese is cleaning house. if you want to stay in new york, victor, you might want to temper your price.

but i still have to believe jay z wants his clients in nyc, since his angle is pr and marketing.

  3. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

Could be he’s being called up instead.

  4. Betty Lizard says:

The reference to Joplin in the game thread . . . and recent experiences . . . made me remember, again, Robbie Robertson in The Last Waltz:

“The road . . . . The road has taken a lot of the great ones. Hank Williams. Buddy Holly. Otis Redding. Janis. Jimi Hendrix. Elvis. It’s a goddamn impossible way of life.”

  5. Eddard says:

Scherzer and Verlander are better than Hughes and CC so I expect a sweep in Detroit without Nuney to hit HRs off these guys. With all the injuries Detroit’s lineup is superior. Their starting pitching is superior. Our only advantage is the bullpen if you don’t count Boone Logan. Our hitters will need to be patient against their starters if we’re going to scratch out one win in this series.

    • Kiko Jones says:

What’s Verlander lifetime record vs the Yankees? Not good, I’m thinking.

      • vicki says:

if you want to claim his W-L record as meaningful i might point out he career-owns the likes of ben francisco and jayson nix.

i still think he’s beatable, just not that there’s any value in citing his record against a team when that team looks so different now.

        • Bo Knows says:

Verlander for his career is not all that good against NY (Though this year it’ll change considering he’s going against mostly scrapheap) Over the past 3 seasons spanning 44 innings, he’s given up 45 hits, 22 walks, 6 homers with 21 runs given up (16 earned). He has struck out 47 but he has been very human against NY.

This is the most Eddard line EVAR.

Because hitters with a .707 OPS don’t just grow on trees, you guys.

  6. Kiko Jones says:

If the team’s strong point is the one that’s currently faltering I’m gonna take that as a good sign, wait for it to rise to the occasion and in the meantime enjoy the bonus offense.

  7. Hans Moleman says:

You are now aware that Chris Davis has 4 more RBIs and one less home run home run than the 2013 New York Yankees in four games.

    • vicki says:

he even did some of that against good pitching. (and some not-so-much.)

    • Heizmanziel says:

I am sure that he has more RBI’s than a few teams right now. He is the first person in the HISTORY of baseball to have 16 RBI’s in the first four games of the season.

    • WhittakerWalt says:

    • MannyGeee says:

Are YOU now aware, that Chris Davis is on the trajectory to break EVERY BASEBALL RECORD in the history of not only the MLB, but MLB The Show, MLB 2K whatevsies, RBI Baseball from your 8-bit Nintendo in moms basement and Baseball Stars (The Lovely Ladies FTW!)

Don’t get all wadded up over the first week of the season.

  8. Bo Knows says:

RailRiders Update (teehee): Betances has given up 2 runs on 3 hits in the first, he’s struck out two, but it looks like he’s being squeezed because he’s thrown pitches that have looked really good but getting called. That’s probably just as much due to his rep for being wild, so he isn’t going to get the benefit of the doubt

    • Govin says:

Heres another update Betances just finished a 1,2,3 second inning striking out one. While in double A Zack Nuding has given up five runs and still has a Zero era, courtesy of 5 errors.

  9. Heizmanziel says:

I love how Boone Logan has a massive Dip in while conducting his post game interview. Dude doesn’t even need a spit cup.

  10. Barry says:

Worked 10.5 hours today and was hoping to read about a Yankee victory when I got home, for shame. Oh well, good to get Hughes back tomorrow but was eagerly anticipating a Phelps start for some unknown reason. Also, know it’s one game, but am wondering how long Nova’s leash is. Didn’t see any of it (kind of glad) but from reading the recap it seemed to be pretty horrendous. On the bright side Youk seems to be showing shades of his former self so far this year. Will be nice to see such a great former sawk get the True Yankee moniker.

  11. forensic says:

Tyler Austin was updated in the sidebar. It’s never a good thing when the only things that go up are PA, AB, and K.
