The Yankees and Rays have split the first two games of this three-game series, so tonight’s rubber match will determine whether the Bombers go home tonight on the heels of a 4-2 road trip or a 3-3 road trip. They’ve won ten of 14 games since the ugly 1-4 start, and the good news is that Tampa is throwing right-hander Alex Cobb tonight. Right-hander is the key word there. The Yankees don’t pose much threat to left-handers these days, but they have absolutely demolished righties (147 wRC+) in the early going. Hopefully that continues against Mr. Cobb. Here’s the starting nine…

  1. CF Brett Gardner
  2. LF Ichiro Suzuki
  3. 2B Robinson Cano
  4. DH Travis Hafner
  5. C Frankie Cervelli
  6. 1B Lyle Overbay
  7. SS Eduardo Nunez
  8. RF Brennan Boesch
  9. 3B Jayson Nix

And on the mound is the Louisiana-born and Texas-raised left-hander, Andy Pettitte.

Tonight’s series finale is scheduled to start at 7:10pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy.

  1. Havok9120 says:

    Bobb Cobb.

Crush him. Crush him FOR PRUSSIA.

  2. Wheels says:

Last game in a dome for awhile.

  3. Long-Past-His-Day-Rod says:

If only this game was in YS3…

  4. Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

Ichiro really just isn’t a power hitter, huh?

A Captain Obvious quote, I guess.

  5. Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

First official day of auditions today (Monday was an info meeting). Ten people showed up, five guys and five girls.

This is actually GREAT news, since “Godspell” has a ten person cast with five guys and five girls. As far as I’m concerned we’re at least guaranteed a full cast, which is awesome. Nobody really knew how many people to expect, so this is great.

    • Havok9120 says:

That is good news. Certainly better than most of the alternatives.

      • Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

Exactly. And I knew for a fact that at least a few of them were really talented, and a couple other people from the auditions impressed me too. I don’t think it’s going to be a bad cast at all.

    • vicki says:

what city are you in? i put an ad in backstage a few years ago for three non-paying roles. 250 horrible new york actors showed up.

      • Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

Heh, I prefer not to give my exact location but our only advertising was through Facebook and a few small posters I put up,and of the towns I’m close to, none of them are NYC, believe me.

    • Dalek Jeter says:

Congrats dude! Hopefully all goes well.

      • Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

I think it will. Soon I’m going to meet up with friends at an Applebees or something and celebrate, because I don’t think anybody, me included, REALLY thought we’d make it this far.

  6. Dalek Jeter says:

    You’re better than that Robbie…

    • The Real Greg says:

On the contrary, that’s Cano’s career in a nutshell.

Such a great hitter but does what he just did too much,

  7. Mick taylor says:

How come Brandon laird played like crap for yanks but is doing a good job for the astros

  8. Jimmy says:

Scary to see Frankie batting fifth.

  9. The Real Greg says:

    Cobb has a good change.

  10. Anderson Silva says:

    solid 0-2 hit by Nunez

  11. Wheels says:

    Nice hit.

  12. Erica says:

Oh yay! I always get irrationally excited over a Nunez hit.

  13. Preston says:

The Rays piss me off. They debut a solid Rookie pitcher every damn year Price, Davis, Hellickson, Moore and Cobb since 2009. And they have Archer, Colome and Odorizzi all producing at AAA.

    • The Real Greg says:

      While the Yankees……..zippo

      • Havok9120 says:

Yes, because we’re not closer to the average than the Rays.

        • Preston says:

My point wasn’t to bash the Yankees. I can’t remember where but somebody did a graph on developing pitchers and we’re slightly above average in that regard. My point was the Rays are ridiculously good at it. It’s beyond the point where you just think they’ve had good luck and start to think that they know something other teams don’t.

    • Long-Past-His-Day-Rod says:

All true, but look at their playoff record over the last decade and be glad you’re a Yankee fan.

    • trr says:

      why be mad at them?
be mad at the Yanks scouts / FO

  14. Dalek Jeter says:

    That was a nasty pitch.

  15. Eddard says:

They’re getting some good swings off Cobb. Nuney had a nice hit. Ichiro almost hit one out. One more time through the order and they’ll give Andy a nice cushion.

  16. The Real Greg says:

  17. Long-Past-His-Day-Rod says:

    Jeet ain’t making that play.

  18. Dalek Jeter says:

  19. Preston says:

Slow clap for Nuney on that one.

  20. vicki says:

    well, check out the shortstop.

  21. bobtaco says:

    Some throw, Nuney

  22. Erica says:

    Nunez MVP

  23. Eddard says:

It’s the Eduardo Nuney show tonight. Who said Nuney can’t play defense?

  24. Cervelli is the Man says:

    WOW nice job Nuney!!!!!

  25. Vern Sneaker says:

    Pick it, dude!

  26. Dalek Jeter says:

Anybody who says they didn’t feel their stomach drop the second Nunie popped up to throw that ball is either really hungry or a liar.

  27. Dalek Jeter says:

Ugh…I’m watching the game on TV. I don’t need you guys (Kenny, Coney, and Lou) slobbering all over Nix, I get that enough from John and Suzyn, also Lou,
    Mark Derosa>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Jayson Nix.

  28. Vern Sneaker says:

It occurs to me how little I miss Michael Kay. There’s so much more in-the-game commentary without him.

    • Erica says:

      He’s a total conversation killer.

    • Cervelli is the Man says:

If you were listening to the Tamps team like I am on MLB.tv basic, you would miss Michael Kay. They are awful!!!

    • Havok9120 says:

I usually don’t actually miss Kay either…until I listen to almost any non-YES broadcast team.

      • Dalek Jeter says:

The best non-Yankee broadcast I remember from last season was Washington, on the radio. The play by play guy wasn’t at all biased, the color guy was entertaining and knowledgeable, and I knew the score, count, and inning at all times.

  29. Cervelli is the Man says:

Well this game is really hummin along.

  30. The Real Greg says:

    Joe Madden is f***ing nuts

    • Preston says:

It wouldn’t work everywhere, and I think he over does it a little bit with the creativity (both on the field and in the clubhouse). But I think plenty of managers in the next decade or so will emulate him and they probably should.

  31. Dalek Jeter says:

I want to play for the Rays, just for today. They got to hangout with penguins before being payed to play a game.

  32. Erica says:

  33. Chilango says:

Andy dials it up to 91. How about that.

  34. Alkaline says:

  35. Havok9120 says:

    Jeez Andy.

  36. The Real Greg says:

And actually Cano was running hard on that.

  37. Eddard says:

The 2nd baseman would have gotten that anyway, and easier than they did in the shift.

  38. Darren says:

So, what’s going on the game? How does Andy look? I’m listening to John and Snoozyn, so it’s diificult to tell what the F is happening. I feel like I’m listening to two drunks at a bar.

  39. Cuso says:

Knew it when everyone was taking shots at Cobb last night after the game that somehow we’d come out and make him look better than he is for several innings.

YCPB, but you YCPRJ (reverse jinx)

  40. Preston says:

Man, that looked like an INF hit all the way.

  41. Havok9120 says:

SRod is earning his money at first tonight.

  42. Pasta Stumbling Sojo says:

Am I the only one disturbed by these MLB.tv commercials with Wes Welker peddling Depends diapers? Is that really the only product he could find to sponsor?

  43. Anderson Silva says:

I thought only the lineup against lefties was supposed to be this bad. This is terrible.

    • Dalek Jeter says:

Alex Bobb Cobb is a really good pitcher.

      • Anderson Silva says:

This has nothing to do with Mr. Cobb. You have Ichiro hitting second and Cervelli hitting fifth. That is almost Astros bad.

        • Havok9120 says:

          No. No it isn’t.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

Mr. Cobb has a lot to do with it. He’s pitching very well. Obviously the weak lineup helps.

        • Anderson Silva says:

Also, Cobb is not that good. League average maybe (96 ERA+ last year)

          • Dalek Jeter says:

Conversely, if you go and look at his minor league numbers and his brief stint in the majors in 2011 you’ll realize that there is a really good chance that last year is not indicative of what Cobb will be going forward.

        • The Real Greg says:

So? Can’t do anything about it.

        • Havok9120 says:

So this outing has no reflection on Andy either, I take it.

It’d be…interesting if baseball actually worked this way. The MLB playoffs would work a lot more like the NBA.

          • Anderson Silva says:

the lineup is bad. That’s a statement independent of who’s pitching. It can’t be that hard to understand this.

            • Havok9120 says:

The lineup isn’t great. But it isn’t unbelievably terrible on the Astros model. That you’re denying Cobb has much/anything to do with it doesn’t help your argument.

            • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

This has nothing to do with Mr. Cobb

That’s a statement that is not independent of who’s pitching.

    • The Real Greg says:

Doesn’t matter if you’re a righty or a lefty, if you have a good changeup, you can beat the Yankees.

      • Dalek Jeter says:

Doesn’t matter if you’re a righty or a lefty, if you have a good changeup, you can beat the Yankees be a very good major leaguer.

  44. Erica says:

    Send Nunez to AAA!

  45. Luis Castillo (Not the one who dropped the ball) says:

Did Cashman ever actually said something even close to him expecting Nuñez to become a first rate SS? or is Susyn just making shit up, again?

    • Dalek Jeter says:

No, he just said that he was a shortstop, and would be used as a SS exclusively early last season. It was a reference to them giving up on him as a multiposition guy.

    • Havok9120 says:

They’ve said they think he can be MLB starter-quality. I’m not sure they’ve ever gone further than that, at least not in the last several years.

  46. Erica says:

Are you guys in favor of Sweet Lou announcing? I think he always has great insight. (Same goes for David Cone, ESPECIALLY when partnered with Al Leiter.)

    • Dalek Jeter says:

I don’t like Lou. I think he’s boring, he can string more than a sentence together without pausing, and his insight is “meh” at best. Coney on the other hand I love.

    • Havok9120 says:

I think he’s got good things to say much of the time (when he isn’t blathering on being Captain Obvious) but he says them in the least engaging way possible. I don’t mind him up there, and I enjoy it quite a bit for the nostalgia, but I don’t think he’s a great addition that needs to be doing tons more games.

    • Eddard says:

Cone’s the best analyst in the game. If I were FOX or ESPN I’d scoop him up. Leiter is good. O’Neill is good, more for humor than analysis. I don’t mind Sweet Lou, much better than Flasch.

    • Chilango says:

I like Leiter, Cone, Lou, Kenny and…………………………………………………….Kay

      in that order

    • Luis Castillo (Not the one who dropped the ball) says:

I’m not watching right now, but what I’ve heard of him didn’t like it TBH.

      Too old-school/d for my taste.

  47. Vern Sneaker says:

We’ve got NOBODY better than Nunez for SS and he’s handling it decently. Can’t we give him a break? I’m more worried about when he’ll start hitting.

  48. Cuso says:

    Will somebody hit this shitbird?

  49. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

    WTF Boesch?

  50. The Real Greg says:

Now you get why Ichiro starts?

  51. Preston says:

Literally anyone else in baseball would have scored on that.

  52. nsalem says:

I’ve heard Cashman make posiitve statements about Nunez. I think it was foolish of the Yankees to stick him at 3rd base in 2011 when he only had played there as a pro in 5 games back in 2007. What did they expect to result from that?????

  53. Dalek Jeter says:

    Womp Womp.

  54. Cuso says:

Oh come on. Are you serious?

  55. Long-Past-His-Day-Rod says:

    Brennan Boot-sch

  56. Eddard says:

Get Wells off the bench and get Boesch off the field. That was little league right there.

  57. Luis Castillo (Not the one who dropped the ball) says:

Let the “that’s why you play Ichi” crowd apear.

  58. Havok9120 says:

    Well this is deeply unfortunate.

  59. nsalem says:

we need a crafty k here

  60. Anderson Silva says:

comon Andy! We need two more K’s here.

  61. Eddard says:

If anyone can get out of this it’s Andy.

  62. Dalek Jeter says:

    ANDY is straight Dandy!

  63. Vern Sneaker says:

That was a clinic. One more , Andy.

  64. nsalem says:

Those were the easy two. Here comes the hard part

  65. Eddard says:

Coney called it. What a pitch on the outside. One more Andy!

  66. Erica says:

    Cue pissed off Andy.

  67. Anderson Silva says:

one too many curves in the same spot.. fucking Boesch screwed Andy

  68. Dalek Jeter says:

Almost got out of it :(

  69. Havok9120 says:

  70. Eddard says:

Andy told him what pitch he was going to throw. Should have stuck with the cutter.

  71. Havok9120 says:

AND he gets two earned runs off of that, because scoring is stupid.

  72. Anderson Silva says:

Alright, time to hit Mr. Cobb.

  73. your mom says:

    Fuck Ben Zobrist.

  74. Long-Past-His-Day-Rod says:

Damn, thought he was going to get out of it after the two K’s; Whatever, if they lose, I’m still blaming the offense and Boot-sch.

Off to the bar to continue watching the game while becoming even more belligerent.

Let’s get another comeback win together here!

  75. Preston says:

PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL PLAYER!!! Let’s get those runs back.

  76. Havok9120 says:

    Nicely done, Nix.

    Now to avoid the DP.

  77. Luis Castillo (Not the one who dropped the ball) says:

There you have the first bj of the night for yourself Nixy, by the great Jhon Sterling. It wasn’t that long, but a blowjob is good for you.

    • Dalek Jeter says:

God, you should’ve heard the gob-job they were giving him in the TV booth in the first. He was literally compared to Mark Derosa.

  78. Erica says:

  79. Kramerica Industries says:

The Yankees have never hit well against this bastard. It’s terribly annoying.

  80. Anderson Silva says:

    oh boy.. game over

  81. Kramerica Industries says:

And, lovely, Sean Rodriguez there to kill the Yankees once again.

  82. Dalek Jeter says:

Fuck this ballpark and this team and this series. There’s still a chance we win this game but I just hate everything about Tampa Bay baseball.

    • Kramerica Industries says:

I concur with all of this.

Now, try living in this market. These fucking assholes treat the Yankees and their fans like scum, but they are so quick to forget that, without the Yankees help, they never make the playoffs in 2011.

      Fucking ingrates.

  83. Cy Pettitte says:

pick random scrub from the Rays line up, that scrub will probably kill us.

  84. Eddard says:

The wheels have come off for Andy. He shouldn’t have hit Jose Molina but I blame Boesch.

  85. Dalek Jeter says:

    Should’ve IBB’d Rodriguez.

    /worst move in managerial history.

  86. Erica says:

  87. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

  88. Dalek Jeter says:

    Have a defensive day Nunie!!

  89. Preston says:

When did we trade for Alcides Escobar?

  90. Eddard says:

Nuney threw that to first without even looking. I’d say he’s improved his throwing.

  91. Cy Pettitte says:

another ridiculous play with a perfect throw by Nunie

  92. OldYanksFan says:

    Ummm Eddard….
Did you forget to tell the Yankees that we were supposed to Win this game?

  93. Vern Sneaker says:

And next time he boots one everyone will say he sucks let’s get rid of him.

  94. Dalek Jeter says:

This is what I mean about Lou being “meh” when it comes to insight. I really could not care less about Sam Fold’s personal life, or how many kids he has.

  95. Dalek Jeter says:

    soo…soooo close there Pronk.

  96. your mom says:

We’re getting 2 hit by Alex fucking Cobb.

  97. Dalek Jeter says:

That was at least 3 inches off the plate. Molina is a great pitchframer.

  98. Kramerica Industries says:

Cobb has a lifetime 2.33 ERA against the Yankees. Ridiculous.

  99. Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

I know it’s not over. I know we can come back and win this.

But so far, this game really sucks. Fucking Trop.

  100. Havok9120 says:

    Shawn. Kelley.

  101. Dalek Jeter says:

Just saying, if this game is in the Bronx it’s 2-2, because Ichiro and Pronk’s hits would’ve been out and that homer that whoever hit is a double in Left Center.

  102. Dalek Jeter says:

So, regardless of who is pitching and the situation, I hope Wells is PH’ing for Boesch (who I think should’ve been pulled after that error. If you’re in the big leagues you can’t do that.)

  103. Kramerica Industries says:

Cobb is going to throw a CGSO.

    That is so fucking ridiculous.

  104. Winter says:

Just started watching. Has Cobb been getting those strike calls all night?

  105. jtb says:

Its great that the Yankees are awesome against righty pitchers! Isn’t it funny to use the inductive scientifc (apartheid) method against the news media that does NOTHING but preach apartheid. They all have the same thing in common…..i wonder what that is..

  106. Winter says:

So does Wells pinch hit for Nix? Or is Girardi just planning on letting him sit the whole game…?

    • Dalek Jeter says:

Probably B, because if anybody is hitting for Nix it would be Youk who Girardi said wasn’t playing in this series.

  107. Chilango says:

    Nix is hitting?

  108. Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

Ah well. I can live with a .500 road trip. We caught the Rays at exactly the wrong time.

  109. Winter says:

Seriously, this game by Cobb is like something I would do on Easy in a video game.

  110. Winter says:

What odds can I get on Ichiro grounding into a double play?

  111. Vern Sneaker says:

Good pitcher with his A game meets mediocre lineup = this game. I’d have left him in.

  112. Winter says:

    Alright. Let’s go Robb-ay!

  113. The Real Greg says:

Madden is on eggshells right now

  114. Eddard says:

Here we go, for the second game in a row Maddon removed his starter for Rodney. Hit one out, Robbie.

  115. Dalek Jeter says:

C’mon Robbie! this game ain’t over!!

  116. Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

    Ooooooh, drama!

Nobody called tying run to the plate this time…

  117. Winter says:

    What time is it?

    Pronk time.

  118. Eddard says:

Now they’ll just pitch around Hafner and it’ll be up to Frankie. Need a big hit from Cervelli.

  119. Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

Wow, his changeup is fucking NASTY today.

  120. Winter says:

Why isn’t Vernon Wells on deck?

  121. Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

Meh. That sucked balls. Oh well.

  122. Leg-End says:

Tip of the cap to hairy Cobb and onto the next one.

  123. Vern Sneaker says:

Too bad. Had a shot there.
