Murphy goes deep three times in Trenton loss

By

Got a series of infield promotions, courtesy of Josh Norris: IF Francisco Rosario to Low-A Charleston, 2B Rob Refnsyder to High-A Tampa, and IF Ali Castillo to Double-A Trenton. All the second basemen moved up a level, basically. Hopefully that’s not bad news for 2B Angelo Gumbs, who is on the Tampa DL.

Triple-A Scranton (5-4 loss to Rochester)

  • 2B Corban Joseph: 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B — seven hits in his last 19 at-bats (.368) with two doubles and a homer
  • 3B David Adams: 2-4, 2 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K –seven hits in his last 13 at-bats (.538)
  • LF Zoilo Almonte: 1-5, 1 2B
  • CF Melky Mesa: 3-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI — seven hits in his last 13 at-bats (.538) and he hasn’t struck out in three games now … how about that?
  • RHP Dellin Betances: 4 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 5/1 GB/FB — 45 of 76 pitches were strikes (59%)

Double-A Trenton (15-14 loss to Erie)

  • CF Slade Heathcott: 0-6, 3 K, 2 E (fielding, throwing) — no hits, but he did throw a runner out at the plate
  • LF Ramon Flores: 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K – four straight two-hit games
  • RF Tyler Austin: 2-4, 2 R, 2 BB — second straight two-walk game
  • C J.R. Murphy: 4-5, 3 R, 3 HR, 5 RBI — he hit nine homers all of last year … he’s off to a huge start this year and it’s great to see, the Yankees need one of their young catchers to emerge
  • 1B Kyle Roller: 2-6, 2 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 K
  • 3B Rob Segedin: 3-4, 3 R, 1 2B, 2 HR, 2 RBI, 1 BB, 1 E (fielding) — awesome night, except that the error led to the game-losing run
  • LHP Matt Tracy: 3 IP,9 H, 10 R, 10 ER, 4 BB, 2 K, 1 HB, 4/0 GB/FB — 46 of 79 pitches were strikes (58%) … DotF hasn’t seen many starts uglier than that through the years
  • RHP Tommy Kahnle: 1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 WP, 1/0 GB/FB — only 15 of 33 pitches were strikes (45%)

High-A Tampa (13-7 win over Daytona)

  • CF Mason Williams: 1-3, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 3 BB — seven hits in his last 17 at-bats (.411)
  • LF Ben Gamel: 2-3, 3 R, 2 3B, 3 BB, 1 SB – still think two triples is cooler than two homers … helluva night
  • C Gary Sanchez: 2-4, 3 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 1 E (catcher interference) — picked a runner off first with a snap throw
  • 3B Anderson Feliz: 2-6, 1 R, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 2 K
  • SS Carmen Angelini: 3-5, 2 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 2 K, 1 E (fielding)
  • RHP Mikey O’Brien: 2 IP, 9 H, 7 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 K, 1 WP, 1/1 GB/FB

Low-A Charleston (8-6 loss to Hickory)

  • SS Cito Culver: 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 BB
  • 1B Greg Bird: 1-4, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K
  • 3B Dante Bichette Jr.: 0-4, 1 RBI — three hits in his last 30 at-bats
  • C Peter O’Brien: 2-4, 1 R, 2 2B, 1 PB — four passed balls already
  • RHP Jose Campos: 3 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 2 WP, 1/3 GB/FB — I assume he’ll start stretching out a bit in a few weeks, seems like all the young pitchers are on tighter than usual pitch counts so far … maybe that’s a Gil Patterson thing?
  • LHP Evan Rutckyj: 4 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 4 WP, 2/3 GB/FB — not sure I’ve ever seen four wild pitches by one pitcher before

Yes or no: JR Murphy starts at least one game at catcher for the New York Yankees in 2014. GO.

wonder why Eddard didn’t get the first comment in this thread?

  5. Tom T says:

Wonder if David Adams would make more sense than Jayson Nix for the vs LHP infield role.

  6. Andy In Sunny Daytona says:

I saw Angelo Gumbs before the game. He had his right wrist wrapped in ice. Supposedly he has a strained tendon in his wrist.

  7. JonS says:

    Betances is toast.

  8. Larch says:

Did they move in the walls at Trenton?

  9. emac2 says:

Wow – 4,5,6 hitters go 9-15 with 6 HR and 10 RBI and we lose on an unearned run in the 9th.

  10. Preston says:

Another game on the struggle bus for Betances. At least he made it a little deeper into the game. Good games for Murphy, Austin and Sanchez though.

  11. Jeety says:

Mason Williams 3 walks were impressive. ..

  12. Leo says:

    DBJ is so bad

  13. Jamie says:

anyone know what Campos velocity was looking like?

  14. Bob Buttons says:

Wasn’t there a game where Burnett got like four or five WP for us? (or would have been, since some of them where bases empty.)

On a side note, here’s my semi-bold prediction: Cito Culver will be a bigger prospect at the end of the year than DBJ.

    • I am not your broom says:

Last April, Sweaty Freddy threw FIVE wild pitches in 4 2/3 innings. He must have been particularly sweaty that day or something.

  15. Manny's BanWagon says:

Hopefully it turns around but it sure seems like the pitching has been shit so far this year DoTF.

  16. Travis L. says:

What the hell has gotten into Medchill and Segedin?? Damn…

  17. Robert says:

Saw JR Murphy last year at Trenton, was very impressed with him good defense and showed leadership on the field. Always had a good bat.

  18. nycsportzfan says:

JR Murphy was always a guy we knew was a hitting prospect over defense, and its great to see him playin so well.. Man, our Farm System was flat out raking last night! I gurantee u some teams are taking notice of some of our guys right now, as Mason Williams, Jr Murphy, Gary Sanchez, Melky Mesa(don’t we need a righty bat at big level?), Zolio, Adams, Segedin, and many more are raking right now! Flat out raking!!!!

  19. nycsportzfan says:

Anyone think Melk Mesa will get a call up sooner then later?

  20. Monerowasdinero says:

Remember that Posada did not start for us until age 26.

    Patience with our young catchers.

  21. The Doctor says:

Still early but Sanchez seems to be making a travesty of a mockery of a sham of a mockery of a travesty of two mockeries of a sham of High-A ball. Hoping for a AA promotion sooner than later.

  22. CS Yankee says:

Somebody needs to be brave here…

Stewie to be DFA…once cleared, goes to AAA
Romine stays at AAA…as there is no bubble wrap in the pros.
Murph’ to da bigs…plays 2-3 games per week.
    Sanchez to Jersey
Cerv’… will cool down and they shouldn’t play him 5-6 times a week.
Guessing this is unlikely to happen, if at all, before June 1st.

    • Chief Wahoo says:

Dump Bobby Wilson, Murphy to AAA, Sanchez to AA

…and a little patience with Cito, I’ve watched him play all of last year and despite the errors his defense is just Sick!

  23. shittyshittybangbang says:

Hey, Tilapia, what’s your deal with Mesa ?! Seems to me that not too long ago, he was being explored as a MLB option. Are your comments facetious/sarcasm ? If not, please explain the DFA and 40 man exclusion. And what are consequences of both ?
