Yankees place Kevin Youkilis on 15-day DL, call up Corban Joseph

Nunez improves in the field, now it's time to hit
2013 Draft: Eric Jagielo

The Yankees have placed Kevin Youkilis on the 15-day DL, the team announced. The official diagnosis is a lumbar spine sprain. Yesterday’s MRI showed no structural damage, but Youkilis was due to receive an epidural today. Because he played Saturday, the team can’t backdate the DL stint to the original injury last week. Obviously it was a mistake to have him play that game, in hindsight.

Infielder Corban Joseph has been called up from Triple-A to fill the roster spot. The 24-year-old hit .273/.347/.477 (130 wRC+) with four homers in 98 plate appearances this year, his second at the level. Joseph is a second and third baseman by trade, plus the team has had him work out at first recently. He isn’t particularly good anywhere defensively, plus he’s a left-handed bat who won’t help with the team’s continued problems against southpaws, so I really have no idea how they’re going to use him. I guess we’ll find out.

In case you were wondering, Brian Cashman confirmed David Adams is ineligible to be called up until May 15th. It’s the same rule that applies to Clay Rapada — players who are released and re-sign minor league contracts with the same team have to wait 30 days before going back to the show. Adams would have been a much better fit for the roster than Joseph as a right-handed bat who can legitimately play third base.

gah. watching cojo in the field is torture.

    • Robinson Tilapia

Yeah, he didn’t look all that great in the spring.

  • JW

It also doesn’t replace Youk with a third baseman. Hard to see how/where CoJo actually gets into a game. Would it really have been so tough to clear a spot on the 60-man for Adams? Can Tex still be put on the 60-day, retroactively?

    • Jobu

Can Ben Fransicso still be DFAed proactively?

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Adams may not be eligible to be recalled until May 15th. Not 100% sure on that though.
If Tex were put on the 60-day, it would be retroactive to when he was placed on the DL originally (March 22, iirc).

Well we knew this was going to happen eventually. Was just hoping it was going to happen after Teix came back.

  • Robinson Tilapia

    Welcome to the show, CoJo.

  • fabricio

couldn’t they have just DFAed eppley or fransisco and called up adams

  • Vern Sneaker

Especially since we’re winning more than I figured, this is so much fun. All of us love to see the minor league guys come up and now Romine and CoJo and Nuno and Warren are here, even if only for a little while. Soon enough, maybe Musty too is my guess. It won’t last, but it’s cool for now.

    • JW

It’s not so much about a desire to play all the kids — Joseph doesn’t play third, and he’s a lefty. Adams plays third and he’s a righty. Period.

      • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

If Adams is actually eligible to be called up now, this move makes no sense. Not sure he’s actually eligible yet though. They may have not had that choice.

    • Robinson Tilapia

      It’s also useful.

Guys like CoJo and Mesa aren’t getting any younger and aren’t going to progress much further in AAA. Either they get a chance to show they belong (or not), or their 40-man spots are going to go elsewhere at some point.

      • MannyGeee

Preparing my “Cashman Failed” rant for when CoJo is platooning in Oakland in 2015.

        • Robinson Tilapia

          Houston, Manny. Houston.

          • jjyank

            Or Pittsburg.

            • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

He can always join C-Dick and Sam Pearce on the Fightin’ Showalters.

  • Ansky

Does anyone have an update on Mustelier? Man, if he was healthy this would have been a great opportunity for him. I’ve been waiting to see him get a chance in the bigs.

    • fabricio

the last I heard was that he was playing in some extended spring training games and that he should join AAA in few days or a week or two

      • Roadgeek Adam

The lack of news bothers me really, given the fact that Mustelier has been my favorite prospect for some time.

        • mitch

I’d like to see him get a chance too, but I wouldn’t really consider him much of a prospect. He’s 28 and if you factor in that he’s Cuban, he’s probably in his 30s

          • Robinson Tilapia

            How old am I, then?

            • The Real Me

57, but no one has told you yet.

  • This Year

Isn’t there some way they can make a move to bring up Adams– you know, someone who actually plays the position and hits from the right side?

    • Dan

I think if they believed Youkillis was going to be out for a significant period of time they probably would have brought up Adams. For 2 weeks I think they can live with the bad defense that Joseph will provide from 3rd. Also, since Joseph was on the 40 man and Adams was not, for what could just be a 2-week audition, it might not be worth killing a roster spot from someone else on the 40-man when they keep having injuries pop up and they need any depth that they have. That said, I don’t see the value that Francisco offers on the roster and I wouldn’t have had a problem with them DFA’ing him, but they might have an issue with getting Adams back to the minors if he does not clear waivers if they need a 40-man roster spot back when they start getting Tex and Granderson back.

      • Robinson Tilapia

Read NP&H’s comment below on Adams.

Consider this a two-week tryout for CoJo to show he doesn’t belong getting hits off of Andy Pettitte in Houston.

  • Chip

And Joseph has huge splits in the minors. I’d guess that they’ll keep running the same lineup out there except with Joseph at third against righties

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Cojo looked awful at third in ST. I’d guess he doesn’t see much playing time at all and is more of an emergency reserve.

      • Caballo Sin Nombre

If this were little league, they could move Cano to third and play CoJo at second.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

fwiw, per Jack Curry, Adams not eligible for recall until May 15.

    • Robinson Tilapia

There we go. Thanks for checking that out and linking.

  • Ed

If David Adams didn’t have bad luck he’d have no luck at all. Every time it seems something could go right for him something comes along to ruin it. Hope we can survive the CoJo experience.

  • bulasteve

Perfect timing if you ask me. I have tickets for all 3 games here in Denver next week and at least I won’t have to cheer for the douche bag in person. Sorry but I still cannot stand the guy, has 100% to do with his stance and that he is married to Brady’s sister, everything personal.

    • The Real Me

I’ll be at 2 of the games next week myself (provided I don’t get called out of town on business at the last minute; a distinct possibility.). Personally, I’d prefer to see the better player out there for the Yankees. I hated Youk with the Sox, but he’s the best thrid baseman the Yankees have, so he’s my preference.

    • RkyMtnYank

Not a fan myself either but have tickets for 2 of the 3 games and am just happy the Yanks are finally back in town.

  • Robinson Tilapia

If I could go back in time to any moment so far this season, it’d be the moment right before Youk got into the lineup on Saturday. Argh.

  • Mscott

Shelley Duncan DFA’d. Better than Francisco.

    • trr

My Aunt May is better than Francisco.

      • Caballo Sin Nombre

        Do you have Spidey-sense?

    • Robinson Tilapia

      Nah nah nah nah nah.

I was there, in section 203, when Shelley returned to Yankee Stadium as member of the Indians. The entire section tried to get him to wave for a good three innings and he completely ignored us until we turned on him. Then he waved.

You don’t do that and get to return to Yankee Stadium. My ass.

This is why my response to “Shelley Duncan” is always “Fuck Shelley Duncan.” You didn’t give us bleacher fans what we wanted. You turned your back on us.

      • The Real Me

        Sure, it’s always about you!

      • jsbrendog

        • Robinson Tilapia

          You doubting me, Brendog?

      • vicki

come on, man. you can’t feel slighted by shelley. shelley’s special. like lennie small special. i love that big, dumb hacker.

  • JU

Mike, you say you have no idea how they are going to use CoJo as if the thought of Jason Nix not starting against Righties is blasphemous… Stick him out there and hope never has to make a throw from 3rd base. Maybe he hits and compensates for the trouble his defense will eventually cause.

  • Darren

Did the original post on this NOT include the third paragraph, which explains why Adams can’t be called up until May 15th? because there are like 15 comments questioning why CoJo was bought up and not Adams.

Or is it just a failure to read more than the headline?

    • http://www.riveraveblues.com Mike Axisa

I added the third paragraph later.

      • Robinson Tilapia

To the chagrin of Dan at 4:02 PM.

        • Darren

          Ok, thanks for the clarification!
Also, I will now form a new indie band called

          “Chagrin of Dan”

          • Robinson Tilapia

Sort of proggy, but with an indie vibe?

  • theskyisfalling

please tell me the Yanks will do what everyone else has done this year and light Humber up

  • Rob NY

I’ve heard their music. It’s got a lot of energy, you don’t hear stuff like that often. And they’re always amazing live.
