Yankees release David Aardsma

The Yankees have given David Aardsma his unconditional release, manager Joe Girardi confirmed this afternoon. The right-hander was designated for assignment last week to clear a 40-man roster spot prior to the season. The release indicates he went unclaimed on waivers.

Aardsma, 31, was cut loose because the team preferred relievers capable of pitching multiple innings. He pitched well in Spring Training despite missing a few days with a groin problem, but hip and Tommy John surgeries have kept him on the shelf for the last two years. I assumed some team could claim Aardsma off waivers given his $500k base salary, but I guess no one wanted to roll the dice. Maybe the medicals are worse than we realize.

“We want a guy who can throw multiple innings, so we’re releasing Aardsma. Here is your roster spot, ROOGY Cody Eppley. I know you can get LHH’ers out because they only have hit .380/.476/.500 with a .423wOBA against you.”

    • The Real Me (Formerly Cris Pengiucci)

Have to agree, this is a real head-scratcher. They must have thought he wasn’t as good as Eppley, despite the ST results. I can’t see it.

    • Luis Castillo (Not the one who dropped the ball)

Agreed, from where we are standing seems like an idiotic move.

Hell even if the medicals are that bad I’d take a chance on this guy for $500K, he is not hurt yet (at least I haven’t heard that he is hurt right now). All this seems even more strange when, as you pointed out, the alternative is Coddy Eppley and has options (I think).

  • Ed

My gut is that it’s one of those cases where he was getting results in spring training, but it wasn’t sustainable. Maybe the velocity isn’t there – good enough to get out the second string guys in spring training, but not enough to get out major league hitters.

  • Evan

I’m confused if he passed through waivers can’t they stash him in AAA? Same with Rapata why just release these guys?

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

If they tried to outright Rapada, he could refuse the assignment because he’s been outrighted before.
IF they tried to outright Aardsma, he could refuse the assignment because he has over 5 years of service time.

    • Tom

They can, but he probably has enough service time where he would have to accept an assignment.

Rapada was on the DL so I don’t think they can option him down until after he was deemed healthy (and taken off the DL). I could be wrong on this as the injury was in ST and there are some exceptions (I think)

“Maybe the medicals are worse than WE realize”

Oh is that right? Why don’t you speak for yourself, you had this all figured out after he was released that it was such a dumb move, and of course you brought it up again after Eppley sucked.

And yet… And yet no other team claimed this guy. Classic know-it-all hubris.

    • LK

      In fairness…Eppley totally does suck.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Bit of a stretch. Not being claimed doesn’t necessarily mean he’s not a better option than Eppley.

    • Robinson Tilapia

He runs a website and you’re stuck using new screen names every night on it.

  • Havok9120

Safe bet that SOMETHING else is going on if no one claimed the team-friendly backend of the guy’s contract. I wonder what it is.

Don’t jump to conclusions to quickly about David Aardsma….there is already interest in him..in addition to being a good pitcher….he’s a GREAT, Husband, Father, Son-In-Law and Friend….sit back and be surprised.
This is the young man, you would be proud to call son, and have your children immolate….he’s one in a million.

    • Barry

      Someone has a crush.

    • jsbrendog

sounds like aardsma has a sad…..

plus…you might want to go check the definition of immolate….

Kill or offer as a sacrifice, esp. by burning.
      sacrifice – victimize

Haha. Being that “I” is right next to “O” on the keyboard, it was probably a mis-stroke on the keyboard in an attempt to spell imitate and the spell check did the rest by turning imotate into immolate.

…although when I type imotate, spell check makes it imitate.

When I type immotate,THEN it becomes immolate. So maybe she thought imitate had 2 m’s.

        • jsbrendog

come on, we both know it is aardsma himself. or maybe his mom…

          emulate, david, emulate.

      • Barry

I’d let my future kid sacrifice him.

The word was spelled incorrectly…it should have been “emulate”, and no it’s not David, his wife or mother….a family friend who decided to finally respond. I’ve have known the Aardsma’s him since he played with the Red Sox, and if you knew him personally you would know he does not boast…I tell it like it is. I have had the opportunity to work with several of the players, for almost 20 years and you will only hear positive comments from me about each of them….Having read several Blogs, etc since his release, and knowing him personally….I decided to speak up…At the end of the day, I know it’s a business…I don’t enjoy seeing good people being talked about in a negative way….but that’s why we are blessed to live in the USA and have freedom of speech.
