Game 54: One-Third

Tonight’s game marks the end of the first third of the season for the Yankees. They’ve been playing no good, very bad baseball for a little more than a week now, but I think the overall season results have been positive to date. The scrap heap pickups overachieved in a big way early on, allowing the team to stay afloat while half the roster sat on the DL. Thankfully, both Mark Teixeira (wrist) and Kevin Youkilis (back) are both in the lineup tonight. Not a series too late either, the Yankees are scheduled to see two lefties this weekend and they need the righty thump. Here’s the lineup that will face left-hander Jon Lester…

  1. CF Brett Gardner
  2. DH Kevin Youkilis
  3. 2B Robinson Cano
  4. 1B Mark Teixeira
  5. LF Vernon Wells
  6. SS Jayson Nix
  7. 3B David Adams
  8. RF Ichiro Suzuki
  9. C Chris Stewart

And on the mound is Baseball America’s 2008 Player of the Year, lefty CC Sabathia.

It’s another hot one in New York, meaning another good weather night for baseball. Tonight’s game is scheduled to begin at 7:05pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and MLB Network nationally. Try to enjoy.

“You’re riding high in April, shot down in May, but I know I’m gonna change that tune when I’m back on top, back on top in June.”

    – Frank Sinatra

  2. Winter says:

    Ichi-NOwhyareyouinthelineup?

  3. SDB says:

As bad as the last week’s been, even if they lose today, they’ll have gotten through May with a .500 record (14-14, after going 16-10 in April) – not complaining too much there.

But it’s good to see Teixeira and Youk back in the lineup at last.

  4. I'mVernonI'mVernon4U says:

Great that Tex and Youk are back. I’m sure one of them will be injured by next week, because that seems to be our luck.

But whatever, we need to break the curse of Francisco.

    • Troll says:

Seriously, change the handle before the game starts. Not to sound too superstitious, but your bad mojo is killin’ me, smalls.

      • Pasta says:

        BOC fan
        Dont fear the reaper

      • I'mVernonI'mVernon4U says:

lol. Give me a good handle then!! And then you’ll have a deal.

        • Troll says:

“Don’t Fear the Cowbell”? I have no idea, but the longer you tote the Vernon, the longer he’ll continue to slump his ass off . . . Hell, put, “Temporary Name” or “TBD” in the mean time. Just change it before Vernon comes to bat!

  5. JonS says:

Great time for Sabathia to be trying to figure out wtf is going on…

Hopefully he can and the Yankees can get a much needed win.

  6. SDB says:

I’m optimistic. Sabathia always seems like a much better pitcher when it’s ridiculously hot; hopefully this heatwave will get him going.

  7. Kramerica Industries says:

There’s still 3-4 lineup dead spots there (if Vernon Wells breaks this slump any time soon) but at least it looks better than the dreck we’ve seen for the past week or so.

  8. Reuben Sierra's Chains says:

Let’s go Boyz time to turn into Men!

  9. Rolling Doughnut says:

Tex and Youk will go 10 for 10. Bank it.

  10. trr says:

    Fingers crossed..

  11. forensic says:

Is CC really starting out at 89 with his fastball as Sterling and Waldman are saying?

  12. Pasta says:

    Yanks are back
    6-1 in big win
    Thats how i see it

  13. Pasta says:

    I fucking hate ratboy

  14. Rolling Doughnut says:

    Pedroia.can.hit

  15. DavidAdamsIsGod says:

Perfectly pitched AB by C.C. and it results in a double

    When it’s goin bad…

  16. Anderson Silva says:

It’s sad. He can’t get a swing and a miss to save his life.

  17. Pasta says:

Ortiz drinking his special milkshakes again.

  18. Wheels says:

That was funny when Cone ripped that fan in the stands for booting that play.

  19. Pasta says:

    Lets get him

  20. Pasta says:

    Lets get him

  21. forensic says:

    Oh my god, a WALK!?!?!?

  22. Wheels says:

    Welcome back Youk

  23. Tom says:

Lester already doing the stare down the ump 1 batter into the game.

Hopefully the ump won’t give in on those balls as the game goes on.

  24. Jacob the OG says:

“The yankees have not walked in their lat 101 PAs” *Gardner proceeds to walk on 5 pitches*

  25. Reuben Sierra's Chains says:

Time to Fuck these losers up.

  26. Leg-End says:

Cabrera is just ridiculous isn’t he.

  27. Anderson Silva says:

We really missed patient ABs like this

  28. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

    Of course.

  29. Pasta says:

Youlk still looks like the pinup boy for HGH with that big head and huge jaw.

  30. DavidAdamsIsGod says:

Oh God, the Cano<Pedroia brigade is back?

    Two year vacation eh?

  31. Rolling Doughnut says:

Cano’s idea of going the other way, dude is f* lost.

  32. Anderson Silva says:

and Cano continues with his shitty ways

  33. Tom says:

And as usual… the staredown crap works and the ump gives in. And now he’s bitching after the inning

Look at where the pitches are that he thinks are strikes (you can see the ridiculous strike on Cano too):

    http://www.brooksbaseball.net/.....type=7.gif

  34. Pasta says:

Gardner needs to learn how to get a better jump. For a fast guy he really can not excelerate for shit.

  35. Pasta says:

When did napoli join Duck Dynasty?

  36. forensic says:

I’m sure we can expect A-Rod to get a similar warm welcome back later in the season…

  37. Pasta says:

    Tex thinner than last year

  38. Pat D says:

“They’ve tested that sheath enough so they don’t think it’s going to tear.”

    Hmm. Kinky.

  39. SDB says:

I missed this. Youk at least filling up the count before the K, and Teixeira forcing a walk. SO much better than various people just striking out on 3-4 pitches or popping up on the first pitch.

  40. Pasta says:

This is where not having Grandy hurts

  41. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

    vern!!!

  42. King George says:

    Offense!!!!!

  43. Kramerica Industries says:

    Lineup dead spots de-activate.

  44. DavidAdamsIsGod says:

Isn’t Jackie Bradley supposed to spread wings, catch that ball, and gracefully touch back down?

  45. Tom says:

    Some nice AB’s so far.

  46. forensic says:

Woohoo!!! A run!!! And early in the game too! And a lead!

  47. Pasta says:

    Where back!

  48. flamingo says:

So this is what leading in a game feels like!

  49. Tom says:

And here we go with another walk around the mound as Lester tries to intimidate the ump into that call… the ump should just warn him.

  50. Pasta says:

    We-re back dammed auto fix

  51. I'mVernonI'mVernon4U says:

And Troll was here telling me to change my handle ;)

  52. Wheels says:

    Do something here Ichiro.

  53. Pasta says:

Good pitch to adams who is swb bound.

  54. Rolling Doughnut says:

    Bunt…..

  55. Pasta says:

    More runs dammit!

  56. Troll says:

This is where I miss the “old days” when Posada, Cano, Swisher, Matsui were filling up the back-end of the lineup.

  57. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

Nice to see Ichiro and Wells return from the dead.
    Keep it going, please.

  58. flamingo says:

    YES.

  59. Pasta says:

    Take that axisa

  60. DavidAdamsIsGod says:

We’re back to working counts baby

  61. DavidAdamsIsGod says:

    2nd inning

    10 minutes to 8

    The Yankees are back

  62. Pasta says:

Nice 45 pitches for lester in 2 lol love the old yanks being back

    • Troll says:

The Yankees are good with driving pitch counts up in the first 2-3 innings. That’s usually where it stops, however.

  63. SDB says:

Way to kill the inning, Stew.

  64. JobaWockeeZ says:

    Boston refs.

  65. Wheels says:

    Jeez, is Stewart that slow?

  66. forensic says:

Can’t they just treat Chris Stewart like a pitcher and have him bunt the runners up even with one out?

  67. Pasta says:

Wow was stewart pulling a wagon behind him there? That was molina slow.

  68. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

I really wish Chris Stewart would stop being Chris Stewart.

    Good inning though.
    Shutdown inning please.

  69. Brian S. says:

Losing Cervelli was the worst injury so far this year. Romine-Stewart is the absolute worst.

    • Troll says:

“Absolute worst” doesn’t begin to do their shittery service. They’re so bad that they make my ass bleed. Even that, only ignites a fraction of my ire for those lifetime AAA’ers.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

That is WAY overvaluing Frankie Cervelli there.

      • WhittakerWalt says:

Maybe he means injuries that happened after the season started? Because anyone who thinks the loss of Cervelli is worse than the loss of Jeter (or ARod) is crazy.

  70. WhittakerWalt says:

Allow me to kill that rally for you!

  71. Troll says:

Is there any way to NOT play with a catcher? Make Loverboy the catcher.

  72. JobaWockeeZ says:

This is worse than letting a pitcher get a hit.

  73. Winter says:

I just got back. Theres a number on the scoreboard that isn’t a 1 or a 0 and I’m not sure what it is. Any insight?

  74. WhittakerWalt says:

Ma and Pa are not giving credit to Stewart for hitting the hall hard. Ummmm into a double play, guys.

  75. Pasta says:

Stewart running a 5.5 on that run to first.

  76. Troll says:

This friggin’ Iglesias . . . Does he ever NOT get a hit? Clearly he must’ve been the number one overall prospect in baseball . . .

  77. Pasta says:

    Cano cannon arm
They can dfa brignac keep adams and let robbie play ss.

  78. Tom says:

    Nice inning for CC

Got away with that last pitch though… missed his spot by quite a bit.

  79. WhittakerWalt says:

Yes John, there are other 2nd baseman who can turn that DP. Not just Cano.

  80. JonS says:

I love how when the Yankees and Redsox play, we get Pedroia/Cano comparisons and they each make amazing plays seemingly trying to outdo each other.

  81. Tom says:

Do not bunt here… work Lester over.

  82. Troll says:

The Orioles offense is so good that I’m actually jealous. I’m not even mad, really, because they almost deserve it for all the years of bland, uninspiring, horrible, meaningless, ugly baseball.

  83. Anderson Silva says:

really loving the long ABs so far.. Very different approach

  84. Pasta says:

Two pitches youlk come on work this guy.

  85. Pasta says:

60 pitches in three innings lol lester

  86. Wheels says:

    Strike three.

  87. Anderson Silva says:

middle of the plate and he’s staring at the ump.. he’s fucking lost

  88. Winter says:

I don’t know what Cano’s problem with that pitch was. Maybe if the ump had called a high strike earlier in the at bat, but all Lester’s pitches were down.

    • WhittakerWalt says:

      Ehh, probably mad at himself.

    • Tom says:

I think he was already angry with the 1-0 call which was terrible (both low and outside). He also got hosed in the 1st inning on a really low call on I think a 2-0 pitch.

The called strike 3 was in the zone though.

  89. Tom says:

And after staring the ump down early on and politicking between innings, the ump has given in and started calling both the outside corner and the low strike to lefties.

    http://www.brooksbaseball.net/.....type=7.gif

  90. hogsmog says:

Is the PitchFX gun hot, or is CC really hitting 94 with his four seam?

  91. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

Heh. Look at CC hustling to first.

  92. Pasta says:

    94 cc feeling good.

  93. Mike HC says:

Gotta be encouraged by CC and his velocity tonight so far.

  94. dkidd says:

what’s with the all the beards, boston?

  95. WhittakerWalt says:

“Now the 1-0, and the pitch inside the count’s 1-1″

  96. Anderson Silva says:

    pretty change up

  97. Pat D says:

Mike Torrez is the only person I can think of for the trivia answer.

  98. Anderson Silva says:

    back to the shitty ABs

  99. Pasta says:

Please get him to 70 nix

  100. Rolling Doughnut says:

Not to sound Greg-like or anything, but the zone seems to be way tighter for CC than for Lester.

  101. dkidd says:

michael kay hates fangraphs references more than ketchup

  102. Pasta says:

Nix best at bat this inning

  103. Robinson Tilapia says:

Well this has the look of a real narrative-buster thus far.

I don’t care how he does. It is so fucking nice to see Mark Teixeira at first base. God, I missed that guy.

    • SDB says:

Yup. Loverbay’s been very good, way above expectations, but so good to see Teix back and working long counts again.

  104. Wheels says:

Kareem Abdul Jabbar in the house.

  105. dkidd says:

    what happened to strasburg?

  106. Pasta says:

    CC dealing !

  107. Wheels says:

    Yeah CC!

  108. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

CC’s third reverse-Hughes of the game.

  109. hogsmog says:

    Nasty.

  110. dkidd says:

    welcome back, big man

  111. Pasta says:

CC is back. Could it be the warm weather?

  112. Eddard says:

CC’s back. Everyone was fretting day in and day out about this club but here they are up 2-0 fighting for 1st. I thought we could take 2/3 and I like our chances.

  113. SDB says:

Sabathia going as high as 94 mph that inning!

  114. Chris says:

Who is the “punk as* muthafuc*er” that CC was referring to as he walked off the mound?

  115. Pasta says:

Get Lester to 85 this inning

  116. Reuben Sierra's Chains says:

    CC is shoving

  117. forensic says:

Nice to see (hear?) CC finally going over the edge and taking out his anger/frustration on the Red Sox. They really needed to see something like this from him.

  118. Pasta says:

Ichiro can bunt but pitcher spot up next

  119. Tom says:

I don’t think he had it.

  120. Pasta says:

    Get tossed joey

  121. Anderson Silva says:

2nd base ump is a red sox fan..

  122. Pat D says:

Joe is so wrong on this one, but he’s clearly going for the motivation factor.

  123. Robinson Tilapia says:

    Take ‘em both out, Joe.

  124. Eddard says:

Joe’s trying to fire up his club. I wouldn’t be surprised if the team went on a winning streak now.

  125. vicki says:

    love joe going all italian.

  126. Kramerica Industries says:

That’s the “five game losing streak managerial toss”. The call was actually pretty obvious.

  127. Wheels says:

    Joe’s alright

  128. Pasta says:

    Not with the pitcher up

  129. Tom says:

Bunt here? (yes I’m aware there is 1 out)

  130. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

    Lol. Walk Chris Stewart.

  131. Pasta says:

Nice lester 87 not long for this game

  132. Pasta says:

    Youlk deliver here please.

  133. Dalek Jeter says:

So, how have The Walked Dead Wounded looked? As well as CC?

  134. Wheels says:

    You stink Stewart!

  135. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

    Fucking stupid ass baserunning Stewart.
    Absolutely awful.

  136. Dalek Jeter says:

Right as I make my first post Stewart makes the last out at 3rd…maybe I should go…

  137. SDB says:

Jeebus. Stewart runs the bases about as well as CC.

  138. Eddard says:

That’s what we were missing from Youk. And of course Stewart continues to be a worthless clown.

  139. Pasta says:

    Chris (I kill rallys)stewart

  140. Rolling Doughnut says:

Stewart finds a way to kill the rally. Bonehead play Chris.

  141. OldYanksFan says:

Stewie with the 3rd out at 3rd. Not good Stewie.

  142. Tom says:

What the hell is Stewart doing?

  143. your mom says:

    Just die Stewie.

  144. forensic says:

    Nice Youk!

Even when Stewart somehow reaches base, he still manages to screw things up.

  145. trr says:

    Stewart is really a rock-head, isn’t he?

  146. King George says:

So not only is Stewart an incompetent catcher, but he’s also an incompetent baserunner. Ok, good. We now have that established.

  147. vicki says:

i may hate chris stewart more than i hate pedroia.

  148. Pasta says:

My god just go to 2nd fuck nuts cano is up?

  149. JMK says:

Seriously, what as a fanbase did we do to deserve the plague that is Chris Stewart? What gods have we angered?

  150. Dalek Jeter says:

John Sterling: *lets just sweep Stewart breaking the cardnale rule of baserunning by talking about Youk getting a hit*

  151. Jonathan says:

Dude gets paid to play baseball and just made the last out at 3B, when it wasn’t even that close, with Robbie due up and Lester struggling and nearing 100 pitches. Holy fucking shit. That’s a major fine.

  152. Pasta says:

Stewie has Mets written al over him in the future.

    • vicki says:

kidding? mets have buck, with d’arnaud on the way. what the hell do they need with garbage like chris stewart?

      • Pat D says:

        They’re the Mets.

Do we actually need to say more?

This is a team that currently employs Marlon Byrd, Omar Quintanilla, LaTroy Hawkins, Scott Atchison…

  153. Tom says:

Good thing Ichiro still has speed or that boneheaded play would have also cost the run.

  154. Pasta says:

Ok here comes boston cause stewart kills a big inning.

  155. Pasta says:

Can we just send Nova to the Braves for Mcanns

  156. your mom says:

What the eff is up with Iglesias having 2 hits off CC? Is he their new Ciriaco?

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

He’s hitting .444 this year. He’s hitting everyone (so far).
Ciriaco pretty much only hit against the Yankees.

  157. Pasta says:

    Nice ratboy stays on deck
I feel good Yankee karma this game.

  158. forensic says:

Suzyn: “Jonny Gomes hitting .182. I’ve never seen that number associated with him.”

I guess 2008 never happened when he actually hit exactly .182…

  159. Wheels says:

Hopefully 3 runs will be enough.

  160. Pasta says:

    Lester 100

  161. DavidAdamsIsGod says:

Is there anything better than a Coney broadcast?

  162. Pasta says:

    Bullshit strike

  163. Pasta says:

Lester gets another inning by help of the umpire

  164. Pat D says:

Does Al Pacino actually speak in that Rebuild commercial?

  165. Pasta says:

    Ratboy fucks us every game

  166. Pat D says:

Pedroia is like an infinitely less lovable version of Tyrion Lannister.

  167. Winter says:

Not the world’s best route there by Ichiro.

  168. Pasta says:

    Steroids up

  169. Pasta says:

Pedroia is reading the signs at 2nd

  170. Pasta says:

    Come on cc deal

  171. Dalek Jeter says:

    Gotta get Drew here.

  172. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

I hope the pen is getting ready. Just in case.

  173. JMK says:

Looks like Ichiro took a few pretty clumsy routes to the last two balls.

  174. Pasta says:

Ichiro aging before our eyes becoming Matsui out there in the field

  175. BigBlueAL says:

    Welcome back CC.

  176. Pasta says:

Cano to Tex like a comfortable pair of sneakers.

  177. Tom says:

The big man coming up big.

If that was it for him that was one hell of a start.

  178. Winter says:

I think CC has another inning in him, but with D-Rob and Mariano both having 2 days rest I bet that was his last inning.

  179. Pasta says:

Any chance Musty can get a promotion to the big club hes killing the ball again. Maybe ichiro could fall in the shower.

  180. Eddard says:

Uh uh slider. Very good pitching by CC tonight and analysis by Coney.

  181. SDB says:

Really, could they just pinchhit Boesch or Pronk for Stewart now, and tell them to swing for the fences to avoid the inevitable GIDP?

  182. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

    Stewie!!!!

  183. Eddard says:

Chris Stewart picks up a base knock. At least he’s doing something.

  184. Rolling Doughnut says:

Stewieeee the hardest ball he’ll ever hit.

  185. Pasta says:

    Nice met hit there stewie.

  186. Tom says:

OK Stewie… If there is a single to LF this time, let’s not think you are Rickey Henderson and can go first to 3rd on it.

  187. Tom says:

This might be a spot for Gardner to bunt for a hit

  188. Pat D says:

Was that Arn Anderson in the Red Sox dugout?

  189. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

    Gardy!!! NPOH

  190. Pat D says:

Of course Stewart does the right thing and stops at 2nd, and then Bradley makes a horrid throw that would have let him get to 3rd easily.

Stewart pissed off one of Gods, that’s for sure.

  191. Winter says:

Stewart needs to be going 1st to 3rd there. No excuses.

    /sarcasm

  192. Rolling Doughnut says:

0-2 knock. Way to go. Time to grease up they asses-

  193. Pasta says:

    Stewie stopped at second lol

  194. JobaWockeeZ says:

It’s tough to throw it worse than that.

  195. WhittakerWalt says:

    Pile on, kids.

  196. Tom says:

Cano really is getting some tough calls tonight – that’s 3, maybe 4 tonight (though the strike 3 punchout was a good call)

  197. Rolling Doughnut says:

    Cmon Robbie break it open

  198. Winter says:

Everyone who gets angry at Robbie for being too free swinging: How ya feeling now?

    • WhittakerWalt says:

Were they good strikes he’s been taking? I have no way of knowing.

    • Rolling Doughnut says:

He took the last one down the middle ffsake

    • Tom says:

Did you not see the crap he swung at on 2-1?

It’s the free swinging when he’s ahead in the count as he seems to make up his mind almost before the pitch is delivered.

He’s seen 13 2-1 pitches this month and swung at 10 of them. Only 4 of them have been fastballs as teams now know he will basically swing at anything on 2-1.

      • BigBlueAL says:

My problem with Cano right now (if you can call it a problem) is it seems he is just looking to pull everything. He is constantly rolling over breaking stuff away and doesnt seem to have any intention whatsoever of driving the ball the other way which he has always done well.

Just seems too pull happy right now.

  199. Pasta says:

Ball 4 again called a strike this crew sucks.

  200. JMK says:

That strike 3 looked very slightly outside, but that’s way too close to take.

  201. Winter says:

At least Lance Barksdale is consistent with that low strike.

  202. JMK says:

I tuned in fairly late – what happened to Girardi?

    • Winter says:

Ejected for arguing a call in the 5th inning. Runner on first, grounder to the pitcher. Throw pulled Drew off the bag. Ump called him out, replay showed that Drew did keep his foot down, but it was really close. Girardi argued and was ejected.

  203. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

    Well done, CC.
    Needed a start like this.

  204. Pasta says:

CC said i want to get that litte bitch Bradley again.

  205. Eddard says:

Tip your cap to CC. He pitched brilliantly and hopefully shut up a lot of those critics.

  206. Troll says:

So who was saying the Marlins’ offense is worse than the Yankees? I kid, I kid. Kind of. Not really.

    5 – 1 Miami:NYM

  207. Rolling Doughnut says:

    CC welcome back sir.

  208. Eddard says:

Finally we get the low strike. Throw him out, ump.

  209. Pasta says:

So stewart frames pitches and cant do anything else

  210. Pat D says:

Why does Nava not get tossed for arguing balls/strikes that long? I thought that was the instant ejection rule.

    Effing umpires.

  211. Tom says:

i think at this point there is just a momentum to the hitters complaining… that pitch looked pretty close and he has been consistent with it (though the 2-1 pitch was outside and was called a strike)

  212. Troll says:

So who cares to explain the legend of Enrique(?) Iglesias? Is he projected to be worth a shizzz?

  213. Troll says:

Also, I forgot to notice/mention that Teixera’s struck out in half of his at-bats . . . Good ol’ MT25.

  214. Winter says:

Sounds like someone needs an explanation of how the law of averages works.

  215. elton celery cap cod says:

Good to see tex is still good for nothing at the plate, tries to pull everything, good thing overbay is still around, we’l need him

    • Winter says:

Yeah, god forbit Teixeira is as bad as he was last year… when he hit for a 116 wRC+.

      • JobaWockeeZ says:

Well it’s good but people were expecting better numbers based on his history and contract.

Fun fact, Swisher’s and Teix’s tenures as Yankees both have the same wRC+

        • Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

Give me him over Rivera every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

          • Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

No idea why I wrote Rivera, should be Overbay. Guess Mo is still on the mind.

    • Troll says:

You’ll get raped for that comment, but, on some level, I agree. At least Teixera will see his fair share of pitches, though, which Loverboy certainly can’t say. I’m not saying, to any extent that LOB is better than Teixera, I’m just saying that Teixera is not very good.

  216. Tom says:

Have to think with Mo’s command, he should exploit the homeplate ump this inning.

  217. Hans Moleman says:

Papa Grande about to lose my fantasy team a W.

    • Hans Moleman says:

      *cost

    • SDB says:

Papa Grande did a number on my fantasy team’s ERA as well. Ugh.

Worse still, the O’s won. I’d have minded less if he blew a save with 4 runs against – um, most other teams. But ugh, against Baltimore?

  218. Tom says:

Costas (on MLB Network) must be channeling some Yankee announcers

Last inning he was talking about how you can’t predict baseball, and that first out he almost went into the HR call.

  219. Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

Hmmmmm, perhaps its WWWMW? A line drive and two hits following the debacle at Citi Field. I think he’ll get out of it but he doesn’t look too sharp.

    • Tom says:

Meh… those hits weren’t exactly scorched (the first out was hit pretty well though)

I always wonder about whether you keep the DP in order or just play back with a runner on 1st with a 2 or 3 run lead. (especially with a lefty hitter)

    • Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

Of course he follows up with a strikeout and a vintage Mo broken bat groundout.

  220. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

Let’s not make this too interesting Mo.

  221. BigBlueAL says:

Its never easy for Mo vs Boston.

  222. Troll says:

    Start the implosion . . . NOW!

  223. JobaWockeeZ says:

Based on Mo’s and Ortiz’s numbers you would think today were 2003.

  224. Roadgeek Adam says:

Holy blazes its the Devil in the No. 23. Been a long time since we last saw him (see last season.)

  225. Troll says:

    Phew.

  226. Eddard says:

They’re now primed to take the series and regain 1st place. Teix and Youk came back just in time to save the day.

  227. trr says:

    breathe

  228. Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

One third of the way through the season and the Yankees are tied in the loss column for first place.

I’ll take it every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

  229. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

C-Dick with a walkoff HR vs. Detroit. Smdh.

  230. Kramerica Industries says:

    Papa Grande still fucking sucks.

Unreal. I’m so sick of #OriolesMagic.

  231. BigBlueAL says:

    Freaking Dickerson.

  232. Mick taylor says:

Exception of 2009 Tex has not been as good as he was with the angels braves and Texas. He has been like arod unclutchand horrible in the playoffs except for the he against the twin

    • WhittakerWalt says:

      Selective memory.
Tex had a .973 OPS in the 2010 ALDS, and an .853 OPS in the 2012 ALDS. And anyone can fail in the playoffs, just as anyone can succeed in the playoffs.

      • Rolling Doughnut says:

Not bashing Tex but if Mick has a selective memory you have a bit of statistical confirmation bias. Here are Tex’s postseason slashes: .222/.339/.320/.659 in 40 games and 183 PA

        • WhittakerWalt says:

Not at all. Tex has stunk it up in the postseason, for the most part. But he has had some good series, too. To hear Mick tell it, Tex has done exactly one good thing in the postseason. That’s simply not true. The overall average stinks, to be sure, but he’s had some individual series that were quite good.

  233. trr says:

I know it was a 5 game losing streak, but it seemed longer. Thank God we won….

  234. TomH says:

Forget the Prussia business. New game threads should begin with Sinatra references.
