Yankees activate Teixeira & Youkilis; send Nuno & Nova to Triple-A

The Yankees have officially activated both Mark Teixeira and Kevin Youkilis off the 60-day and 15-day DL, respectively, the team announced. Vidal Nuno and Ivan Nova were sent to Triple-A to clear 25-man roster spots. The Yankees had two open 40-man roster spots, so they didn’t need to make another move to accommodate Tex.

With Andy Pettitte set to turn on Monday, Nuno was an obvious send down candidate. Nova threw 61 pitches on Wednesday and was going to out of commission for another day or two anyway, so he was the other move. I assume both guys will step into the Triple-A Scranton rotation and start every five days. When Pettitte returns, the Yankees are likely to demote a position player — David Adams seems most likely now that his bat has cooled off — and get back to a normal 13 position players, 12 pitchers roster.

Shows they Yanks are confident enough about Pettitte’s back to send down Nuno. Nova won’t be happy, but he should be. Shows team still considers him a starter. Maybe he can iron some things out.

well with warren they don’t need nuno cause if pettitte can’t go warren goes and then you can immediately recall either nova or nuno cause of injury and not have to wait the 10 days i believe

      • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Pettitte would have to be activated first for that to work (unless there was another injured player on the roster), meaning if he can’t go, he’d have to go back on the 15-day DL and miss at least 2 more weeks.

right, theyre most likely going to activate pettitte cause they sent mondays other starter down, no? that was the assumption that everyone was operating under no?

          • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Yes. But if he had a setback in the next few days and wasn’t good to go on Monday, there would be no reason to activate him, and they wouldn’t be able to bring Nova or Nuno back within the 10 days.

leaves us with 11 pichers for the weekend, a little short….
then again, the issue isn’t piching, isn’t brevity of starts (Mr Phelps latest opus excluded)

    Welcome Back Gentlemen. Welcome Back.

Still the normal number of relievers though, so it shouldn’t be an issue.

        Let’s hope not!

Tonight’s lineup is actually not completely hopeless!

  • trr

    Brett Gardner, CF

    Kevin Youkilis, DH

    Robinson Cano, 2B

    Mark Teixeira 1B

    Vernon Wells LF

    Jayson Nix, SS

    David Adams, 3B

    Ichiro Suzuki, RF

    Chris Stewart, C

Wouldn’t have minded seeing Boesch in there in lieu of Ichiro (it’s not like Ichiro’s hitting any-handed pitcher right now), but this is more promising than anything we’ve seen for the last month.

      • mitch

Agreed. I’d like to see him get regular PT for a couple weeks and see if he can get hot. It’s not going to happen.

        • vicki

          i think it might.

meanwhile, i bet ichiro’s in the lineup tonight because of (unexamined, out-of-date) batter vs. pitching stats.

        • CS Yankee

Seems like a push to me…

Ichiro will hover around a .300 OBP, with a few bases swiped and play a solid OF.

Boesch with hover around the same OBP but provide a dinger every 7-10 games but will be less than Swish (think Sheff-like) in RF.

Neal might be the best choice overall, or they can reach for a Musty (Boesch in the OF, some 3B), who would likely have a higher everything with the bat.

    • vicki

and on the bench all the left-handed hitting you can eat. i hope lester’s out early enough to take advantage of it. (or that joe would pinch boesch and pronk late and close anyway.)

  • Bob Buttons

Not that anyone cares or asked, but I have a feeling that Tex might doing something awesome in real life today. Not that it’s any justification but he did hit a homer from each side of the plate in my game today. A totally random prediction: at least one XBH, 1 RBI and 1 R for Tex.

    • trr

      I’ll take that!

  • CS Yankee

Seems like this will be Adams chance to remain in consideration on staying up in the bigs as they will see at least a couple of lefties.

Reid is great with the glove at SS but makes stew’ look gifted with the bat…Nix seems to be their all-around (SS, 3B, LF) choice but maybe Adams can backup all the IF positions and stick at the expense of either Reid, Overbay or Nix in the upcoming weeks.

    • Vern Sneaket

Adams can’t play SS or the outfield so when Pettitte’s back he’s gone, unfortunately. Maybe if Tex stays healthy and they let Overbay go he’d have a chance to return.

  • Vern Sneaket

The core offensive issue remains, with no solution in sight: Three big holes — Ichiro/Boesch, Nix/ Brignac, Stewart/Romine. (I’m assuming Wells and Hafner will snap out of it.) Hard for me to believe management feels it’s okay to live with this much longer.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Realistically, there’s probably not much they can do to upgrade (at least not significantly) C or SS.
They could possibly do something in the OF, but with Granderson coming back eventually, and Ichiro and Wells both signed through next year, it’s probably very unlikely they’ll do anything significant there either.
