Yankees place Andy Pettitte on the DL, recall Vidal Nuno

2013 Draft: Jordan Paroubeck
Game 42: You Again?

The Yankees have placed left-hander Andy Pettitte on the 15-day DL with a strained left trap. He left last night’s start with what was described as tightness. Fellow southpaw Vidal Nuno has been recalled from Triple-A to take the roster spot.

Pettitte, 40, was “pretty spasmed up” according to Brian Cashman. He’s pitched to 3.83 ERA and 4.12 FIP in 49.1 innings so far, numbers that are basically vintage Andy. He missed a start with lower back tightness a few weeks ago, but the trap is up higher, between the neck and shoulder blade. The 25-year-old Nuno has throw eight shutout innings with the big league team his year, include five in a spot start against the Indians earlier this week.

Is Nuno going to start in place of Pettitte or will Warren? Nuno should be stretched out now though right cause he went about 85+ last time so he should good?

    • trr

I’d say Nuno but it ain’t up to me

  • Nuke Guy (Knoxvillain)

These injuries are getting pretty fucking annoying.

  • vicki

let me embrace thee, sour adversity.

The average age of the 25 man roster is quickly getting younger by the game. Groin pulls do not get better over night. The next to be placed on the DL is Stewart. Wilson is not on the 40 man roster. Could it be Murhpy.

    • Havok9120

I’d be pretty surprised if it was. There’s no reason to bring him up as a BUC at such an important (and early) stage in his development. What’s more, there’s no reason to think that Stewart will be out for an extended period of time.

I had this year pegged as a transition/lost year going into it with the 189 plan and all. I’m stoked that they are in 1st place and equally if not more that they are giving the young guys a chance and they are succeeding.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

With all of the injuries, they don’t really have a choice but to give the young guys a chance.

  • Michael

I hope they give Nuno a chance, he looks like he really knows how to pitch. Like Pettite. And he’s a lefty. Like Pettite.

  • Jacob the OG

I wish they would give some info on whether he is going to be back after the 15 days is up or if he needs some rehab time or what.

    • gageagainstthemachine

I’m guessing they don’t have a clue in that sense regarding back spasms/injuries (see: Kevin Youkilis) and will have to wait and see how he responds to treatment and such.

  • Greg

I wasn’t at all excited coming into the year, but I’m really enjoying seeing the young guys.

  • TomH

Well, re these “young guys”: I’m trying, and sort of succeeding, into getting excited about them. But I would rather see Tex, Pettitte, ARod, et al.

Jeter too, of course, but I have gloomy feelings about Jeter.

It would be a boost to “young guys” excitement, if they would release Francisco. He looks lost out there. He’s like that teammate of Mickey Rivers–when Mickey was on the downside of his career–whom Mickey described as being “lost” in the outfield: “He was a lost Mohican out there.” My favorite Riversism. Ol Mickey is momentarily stumped for a metaphor appropriate to this hapless guy and latches on to some memory of some book he had to read in his youth.
