Mesa, Sanchez, and Cave all homer in wins

Game 64: Bartday
Yanks no match for A's; drop series opener 6-4

RHP Mark Montgomery was placed on the Triple-A Scranton DL for an unknown reason, reports John Sadak. Josh Norris hears it is “not serious.”

Triple-A Scranton Game One (6-5 win over Buffalo in seven innings) makeup of yesterday’s rainout

  • RF Thomas Neal: 3-4, 2 R, 1 RBI
  • LF Zoilo Almonte: 2-4, 1 R
  • 3B Ronnie Mustelier: 1-3, 1 2B, 2 RBI
  • CF Melky Mesa: 1-2, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI — left the game with an apparent shoulder injury after crashing into the wall making a catch … he actually stayed in the game and hit the homer after that, but eventually he came out
  • RHP Ivan Nova: 5 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 5/2 GB/FB — 56 of 88 pitches were strikes (64%) … typical Nova, really
  • RHP Chase Whitley: 2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 4/0 GB/FB — 22 of 36 pitches were strikes (61%)

Triple-A Scranton Game Two (6-2 win over Buffalo)

  • RF Thomas Neal: 2-3, 1 R, 1 RBI

  • LHP David Huff: 4 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 1 WP, 4/2 GB/FB — 38 of 55 pitches were strikes (69%) … so much for the bullpen thing, he’s needed in the rotation with Vidal Nuno hurt and Chien-Ming Wang in Toronto
  • RHP Dellin Betances: 2 IP, zeroes, 2 K, 3/1 GB/FB — 14 of 24 pitches were strikes (58%)

Double-A Trenton (6-5 loss to Binghamton)

  • CF Mason Williams: 0-5, 1 K
  • 2B Rob Refsnyder: 0-2, 2 BB
  • LF Ben Gamel: 3-4, 1 R, 1 3B, 1 RBI, 1 CS —he’s 9-for-16 (.563) during his four-game multi-hit streak
  • C Gary Sanchez: 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR, 2 RBI, 2 K, 1 PB, 1 E (throwing) — homer number ten already
  • RF Yeral Sanchez: 1-4, 1 R, 2 K
  • RHP Shane Greene: 3 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, 3/4 GB/FB — not sure why he left after only three innings, but the weather was sloppy and they did have at least one rain delay
  • RHP Charley Short: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K — 44/7 K/BB in 26.1 innings

Low-A Charleston Game One (6-3 loss to Greenville) makeup of last Thursday’s rainout

  • 1B Greg Bird: 1-3, 1 R, 1 HR, 1 RBI — seven hits in his last 27 at-bats (.259), but four doubles and a homer
  • C Peter O’Brien: 0-3
  • 3B Dante Bichette Jr.: 0-2, 1 BB, 1 E (fielding)

  • RHP Cesar Vargas: 4 IP, 7 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 WP, 6/1 GB/FB — 50 of 78 pitches were strikes (64%)

Low-A Charleston Game Two (8-4 win over Greenville)

  • LF Kelvin DeLeon: 2-3, 2 R, 1 HR, 4 RBI — not a prospect anymore, but hey nice game
  • LHP Dan Camarena: 4 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 6/3 GB/FB — 40 of 58 pitches were strikes (59%)

“fourth homer of the year after hitting six in the previous three years combined”

CC the Second is back Baby!

  • Mark

Call up an OF, and send Adams down.

  • Pat D

    4 for his last 33?

Well I guess the DBJ hate will resume soon.

    • Manny’s BanWagon

With good reason. Not only can’t he hit but he’s good for about 1 error per game.

      • I’m not the droids you’re looking for…

Yeah that little run he had seems like a distant memory. Hard to imagine him figuring it out from here. He ought to repeat the level (again) next year at the rate he’s going.

  • L Gobi

Am I missing something on Thomas Neal? Could he be a viable platoon option for Ichiro? Open 40 man spot. Could Brignac and/or Adams really be holding him back? Adams could really use a break from MLB pitching…. But I guess Youk is such a health question still.

    • trr

Many here feel the same. I’m not quite sold on myself, but it seems he could be a useful role player. Things can’ t continue with Adams much longer. Too bad Neal can’t play 3B

      • gbyanks

There is another RH outfielder in aaa that hitting well and can also play 3rd. Just saying give musty a look. the 40 man should be a problem anymore. we are at 39 and nix and reid are probably the cuts when arod and jeter come back. i was thinking betance for pineda…….but im not sure anymore we are gonna need revilers next year.

  • trr

This is more fun than the game thread

  • nycsportzfan

Zolio Almonte is hitting 302BA against right handed pitching this yr. And hes a switch hitter with alittle pop. I’d bring em up and see if you can catch lighting in a bottle. He’s also hitting 300BA overall in his last ten. Give em a shot.

  • Jon G

Ichiro looks like the Tin man before he got re oiled out there – just brutal.

Ok 2 months from now, who is still on the team?
    A) Ichiro? (maybe as 4th of and defense + pinch runner)
    B) wells? I say no…
    C) Brignax? Uh, let me think…no
    D) Romine? Prob no

Who is on the team..? We have some good kids on the way but if there were a year to add a big piece by trade, this could be it – if we are still looking ok by the deadline…

    • fin

I think Romaine will be on the team for the rest of the year as a 1 day a week guy. By the time Fransisco is healthy he will probably be serving a 50 game suspension. I think the season is gone for him. Wells will not only be on this team for the rest of this year, but for next year as well…2yrs left on his deal. Ichiro will continue to play more than anyone wants him to…this year and next. He’s signed for 2 yrs also.

None of those “good kids” are close to MLB, and most have lost some of their prospect luster, well pretty much all outside Sanchez. Minor league help will come from guys like Zolio, Musty, and Neal for now, and none of those guys come without big downsides.

  • Greg Cororan

Refsnyder was 1/2 actually. He has been on fire again recently. If he keeps it up I don’t see why he’s not in Trenton before the end of the season.

    RHP Chase Whitley: 2 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 4/0 GB/FB – 22 of 36 pitches were strikes (61%)

And for that terrific line he is awarded a save…

  • Matt :: Sec110

If Romine is going to up with the Yanks, at what point does Murphy move to 3A and Sanchez go to 2A?

That being said, Romine should go back down to AAA.

  • All Praise Be To Mo

Betances putting up decent #’s in the BP, Sept call up for sure or does he have any trade value as a controllable 2nd/3rd piece in a bigger deal?
