Update: Yankees place Teixeira on DL, call up Warren and Almonte

By

3:24pm: Both Warren and Almonte have indeed been called up. Teixeira has been placed on the DL and Bootcheck has been designated for assignment.

2:16pm: Via Sweeny Murti: The Yankees will indeed place Mark Teixeira on the 15-day DL with wrist inflammation today. They will use the injury to bring long-reliever Adam Warren back from Triple-A before the ten-day waiting period expires. Murti also hears outfielder Zoilo Almonte could be called up as well, though the team has yet to announce anything. Removing Chris Bootcheck from the roster would be the obvious corresponding move there.

hopefully they call up zoilo we need more help if wells is still gonna hit terribly

  • Travis L.

Not that I want them to do this, but I wouldn’t be too terribly shocked to see Randy Ruiz brought up and Bootcheck DFA’d. That way they could platoon Ruiz with Overbay at first. Right??? LOLOLOLOLOL.

    • Travis L.

…damn computer. Anyway. That being said, I’m hoping to see Zoilo and hoping he does well.

      • Mikhel

I saw Randy Ruíz a few times this year playing for the Veracruz Rojos in the Mexican summer league and I highly doubt he could be an upgrade over Overbay (Ruíz batted 0.370 AVG / 0.453 OBP but the summer league is kinda like the PCL, with 30-40 guys batting 0.330 AVG / 0.400 OBP or better and the competition is more like AA than AAA as MLB has rated that league, a different case altogether with the Mexican Winter League where it is harder to bat and have exceptional seasons, most good US rookies fail in the winter league).

  • The Real Me

If they call up Almonte, it was clearly due the outpouring of support on this site. (If anyone from the Yankees FO is monitoring this site please don’t listen to the suggestions made!!!)

    • MannyGeee

Yeah, if anyone in the Yankees FO was reading the shit storms that come across this comments thread, our starting 9 would undoubtedly include Shelly Duncan, Jorge Vazquez, Melky Mesa, Greg Golson and Future HoFer Ronnier Mustelier as well…

      • I’mVernonI’mVernon4U

And CC Sabathia would have been traded already.

      • Crime Dog

Jorge Vazquez!! Wow I forgot about him.

      • Robinson Tilapia

We also would have traded for Seth Smith, Ryan Spillborghs, and about ten other guys…

…which, sadly, would have actually included Dom Brown as well.

        • Cool Lester Smooth

          I want Dom Brown, dammit!

      • Robinson Tilapia

Also, Luke Murton was released last night. I know I remember one of our funny little DOTF regulars commenting something to the effect of “We don’t need a DH. Just play Luke Murton. He can do it…”

      • Get Phelps Up

Hafner would have been cut in spring training and so would Ibanez last year.

      • BFDeal

        Don’t forget CDick!

        • MannyGeee

          Also, the Justin Maxwell.

          • BFDeal

Yep. Those sub-.300 OBP would fit in nicely.

          • Robinson Tilapia

            and the DeWayne Wise.

      • Mikhel

Jorge Vázquez? LOL, it is not like one of the best sluggers in summer and winter league will translate to big league success once he has a chance, look at Puig and Céspedes and how much they’ve failed… well, maybe their success is because they got a chance to play at the big level instead of being relegated to the minors like the yankees do with almost every player they draft and sign internationally.

        • BFDeal

Then why didn’t the other 29 teams jump all over him when the Yankees released him?

          • MannyGeee

Because its obvious that the American Dream is to play in Scranton for a few years and then go back to Mexico….

            • BFDeal

              Ha!

            • D$1184

Well just sub “Japan” for “Mexico” in that story and you’ve got the Kei Igawa story!

        • Robinson Tilapia

I’m not losing sleep over passing up on those two, as hindsight is always the best GM, but Jorge Vazquez isn’t in the same universe as them.

          CUBA SI, MEJICO NO!

        • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

well, maybe their success is because they got a chance to play at the big level

Or because they are much, much better players than Vazquez.

That might have something to do with it.

You’ll notice no other team has given Vazquez a chance either. It’s not just a Yankee thing.

        • Get Phelps Up

          You’re doing this on purpose…

  • Bartolo’s Colon

Surprise, surprise. I thought I read that Cashman said if Tex had surgery back in March, he would have been out the whole year, is that true? I thought I remember them saying, if he had surgery (in March) he would have been back in July timeframe vs May if they they just let it heal by itself. Nonetheless, I would bet that he is done for the season. I know it isn’t the same things, but it reminds me of the gardner debacle last year.

    • Crime Dog

Yeah I’m pretty sure it was season ending surgery if he had it in March, not a return in July.

    • Mikhel

It was season ending surgery, but if they allowed it to heal by itself, the timeframe was may in the best case scenario, july in the worst case scenario.

If he has surgery right now, I wonder if he’ll be OK by march or will he return by may-june of next season.

    • Mandy Stankiewicz

It’s not torn again, so hopefully (unlike JoeyBats last year) this thing is good to go in 15.

  • mitch

Don’t forget about how Arod’s injury has been handled

    • BFDeal

      Explain?

      • mitch

He was injured at the end of last season and they waited months before surgery

        • BFDeal

Ok, I see what you’re saying now. But part of that delay was by doctor ordered pre-hab.

          • mitch

yeah, true….was just pointing out that in general the handling of injuries hasn’t been working out that well over the last couple years.

            • gc

Maybe that’s why the doctor decided to hold off on operating right away and instead let A-Rod strengthen what he could in his hip area so that he’s in better shape to begin (and complete) rehabbing sooner.

  • Robinson Tilapia

I thought for a second that “recall Zoilo” was going to be the new bone to chop on, but I hadn’t read the post carefully. Color me surprised. They’re definitely not fucking around with mixing pieces up in order to try to make something happen.

Poor Chris Bootcheck. The plight of the marginal veteran.

    • Travis L.

Bring up the marginal veteran Dan Johnson!!!

      • trr

Becuase you can never have enough marginal veterans…Bur iy’s not like we have a ton of options

        • Robinson Tilapia

Marginal veterans play a role, but I think we all know that.

I just think it’s rough to sign that MiLB deal, work your way in, get called up for one appearance and, then, here’s your DFA.

          • Travis L.

If he clears waivers, he’d take the job back at AAA, knowing full well that with this team…he has a shot to come back!

            • Robinson Tilapia

He’ll have less a shot as the season progresses, I think, especially if the time to play “Is This Anything?” with Dellin Betances is now.

I think he elects free agency.

Thus concludes the longest conversation held as to Chris Bootcheck in about ten years.

        • Travis L.

What kinds of presents would he bring to the party though? LOL.

          • jjyank

            Really lame gift baskets.

            • Robinson Tilapia

Probably good enough to get him a couple of MiLB hoodrats throughout the season, though.

              • jjyank

RAB is now taking donations to send condoms and STI detection kits to Chris Bootcheck’s house.

                • Robinson Tilapia

I’m sure he’s a nice, married, church man.

                  • I’m One (Because typing all the letters in “The Real Me” is becoming tiresome and might get me confused with “The Real Greg” which is why I dropped the handle originally)

Gotta watch those married church men …

  • Crime Dog

I would like to see Zoilo up just to get a new guy in the mix. Chances they run a double platoon in the OF with Wells/Almonte and Ichiro/Neal?

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Ichiro’s been much better against LHP than RHP this year.
Ideally (given the circumstances anyways), maybe Almonte/Wells and Hafner/Neal.

      • Crime Dog

It’s such a small sample for Ichiro vs LHP, I really don’t think he’s gonna keep that up. And I forgot about Hafner, they’ll probably roll with a rotating platoon where Neal gets some of those ABs vs LHP while half-resting another OF in the DH role in some cases.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

I agree Ichiro won’t keep up the same level, but he has had a reverse split over his career (though he did have a normal split last year). Regardless, Ichiro’s doing it now, may as well ride it until he stops doing it.

  • nycsportzfan

Zolio’s hitting over 280BA against LHP’s. We could use that tonight. Bring em up and stick em in the lineup!

  • Travis L.

Hell, they could DFA Bootcheck, bringing up Dan Johnson, send down Neal and bring up Almonte. Sounds like a lot of moving parts, but I can see it happening.

    • Robinson Tilapia

      Does Neal have options?

      • Travis L.

Shit…I don’t know. Didn’t even think of that. Probably not or else Cleveland wouldn’t have DFA’d him…. damnit.

      • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

It seems that he does have an option left.

  • Travis L.

Off topic…anyone see the video with the british guy calling a baseball game??? That is hilarious stuff!!! Saw it on Pinstriped Bible. “The Power of Gordon-Levitt”.

  • Eddard

This is the right call, Warren deserves to be with the MLB club. What I think I would do is if Hughes struggles again tonight to get through 5 innings I’d switch Warren and Hughes’s roles. We know Warren can give us 6 solid innings because he did it in Oakland. Hughes can be a long reliever and maybe eventually a 1-2 inning set up man replacing the shaky Joba.

    • Robinson Tilapia

He was coming back up no matter what.

    • BFDeal

      Eddard, King of SSS

      • The Real Me

Yup. “He did it once, so clearly he can do it again!”

        • MannyGeee

IN EddardWorld, any sample size is a valid sample size!

          • jjyank

            *dons Russian accent*

In Eddard World, sample size validates you!

            • Robinson Tilapia

It’s a little early in the day for Svetlana. Then again, Greg did show up below, and it’s DEFINITELY early for him.

              • jjyank

It’s never too early fot Svetlana. Greg knows what I’m talking about.

      • JobaWockeeZ

Everyone uses SSS when it’s convenient for their argument.

    • Crime Dog

I don’t think they’re going to flip Warren and Hughes in any way. Warren would need to be stretched out as a starter, and if they were doing that he’d be in AAA still getting a few starts to do just that.

    • jsbrendog

it boggles my mind that there is actually a person in front of that keyboard tapping away

      • Robinson Tilapia

It’s comedic genius. This shtick is far above what any of could consistently pull off.

        • The Real Me

Nah, a lot of what he says is a repeat of what he’s said in previous threads. He really only needs one or 2 original thoughts each day (well, new thoughts, not necessarily original).

          • Robinson Tilapia

Two more original thoughts than I’ve got.

  • mitch

Thomas Neal batting 5th tonight is a little concerning

    • Robinson Tilapia

Worse than Sam Pearce batting clean-up?

      • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Vernon Wells is batting cleanup. Isn’t that the same thing?

        • Robinson Tilapia

Wells’s April may have been a longer strong stretch than Sammy Boy ever had in the majors.

      • MannyGeee

Where have you gone, Casey MacGehee?

        • jjyank

Who? I only know of a Casey McGeheheheheeeehehehe.

        • Robinson Tilapia

Started a travelling road show with Brian Gordon.

          • The Real Me

Are they doing the WWE tag team thing too?

            • jjyank

With Brian Gordan? That skinny mother fucker? That’s Sidney Ponson territory, friend.

              • Pat D

Shows what you know about wrestling.

                • jjyank

Shows what you know about Sid “The Squid” Ponson.

                  • Pat D

Wrestling isn’t a sport for big fat guys like Andre the Giant, King Kong Bundy or Sid “The Squid” anymore.

                    • jjyank

You ruined the joke, Pat. Congratulations.

                • Robinson Tilapia

Have you ever seen some of the 130 lb. guys they pass off as pro wrestlers in the indies? Watch some Chikara vids. Ramiro Pena would be the strongest guy there.

            • Robinson Tilapia

Vaudeville, juggling, locker room stories. Brief burlesque interlude during the nighttime shows. McGeehee in pasties is a strange, but alluring, sight.

              • I’m One (Because typing all the letters in “The Real Me” is becoming tiresome and might get me confused with “The Real Greg” which is why I dropped the handle originally)

You’re too easily sucked into making comments like this. Must have something to do with your likes and dislikes in real life …. :-)

                • jjyank

To alter a quote from the great Biggie Smalls:

“Casey McGehee is tied up in a Brooklyn basement.”

                  • Robinson Tilapia

Scary thing to say to a guy doing child welfare work in just that neighborhood. :)

              • Dalek Jeter

Sounds like good wholesome family fun!

      • mitch

Good question. Maybe i’ll get used to it. I don’t even bat an eyelash when i see Nix batting 2nd these days. In fact, i’m downright comfortable with it.

  • The Real Greg

I would have immediately put Almonte into this lineup.

    Gardner
    Nix
    Cano
    Wells
    Neal
    Ichiro
    Adams
    Overbay
    Stewart

    My goodness

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

He’s better against RHP. Let him make his debut when he has a better chance of success.

      • Crime Dog

Agreed here. Regardless, what a dreadful lineup. Hopefully someone catches fire who can help score some runs besides Gardner and Cano.

    • Fin

WoW, that has got to be the worst lineup in MLB today. That is fucking horrendous.

      • Robinson Tilapia

May not even be the worst lineup in New York City.

  • I’m One (Because typing all the letters in “The Real Me” is becoming tiresome and might get me confused with “The Real Greg” which is why I dropped the handle originally)

Not sure he would have made much of a difference. In place of who?

    • I’m One (Because typing all the letters in “The Real Me” is becoming tiresome and might get me confused with “The Real Greg” which is why I dropped the handle originally)

Reply fail to “The Real Greg” above me.

      • jjyank

Maybe you should just go back to Cris.

        • I’m One (Because typing all the letters in “The Real Me” is becoming tiresome and might get me confused with “The Real Greg” which is why I dropped the handle originally)

Nah. The last name was too long.

  • Hassey

The players at AAA love when Tex is rehabbing with them, because he gives them hotfeet by burning $100 bills instead of scrap paper.

Stamp that thing out quick and then go by yourself new headphones!!!

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

    Youk out 10-12 weeks.

  • CashmanNinja

I supported the Youk signing at the time, but geez…that guy is falling apart and has fallen off the map. He looks nothing like the version from the Red Sox who used to kill us. I guess the Red Sox were smart to move on from him when they did. Too bad we don’t have any replacement :|

  • The Doctor

I really hope the Padres fall straight off the map in the next month. With Youk out and A-Rod’s future uncertain, I would kill to at least have a chance to make a run at Headley.

    • King George

Not happening, there’s talk in SD that they may sign the entire IF (Alonso, Gyorko, Cabrera, Headley) to extensions. New ownership, new money, a solid team, and a top-5 farm. Good luck.
