Update: Yankees place Teixeira on DL, call up Warren and Almonte

3:24pm: Both Warren and Almonte have indeed been called up. Teixeira has been placed on the DL and Bootcheck has been designated for assignment.

2:16pm: Via Sweeny Murti: The Yankees will indeed place Mark Teixeira on the 15-day DL with wrist inflammation today. They will use the injury to bring long-reliever Adam Warren back from Triple-A before the ten-day waiting period expires. Murti also hears outfielder Zoilo Almonte could be called up as well, though the team has yet to announce anything. Removing Chris Bootcheck from the roster would be the obvious corresponding move there.

hopefully they call up zoilo we need more help if wells is still gonna hit terribly

  2. Travis L. says:

Not that I want them to do this, but I wouldn’t be too terribly shocked to see Randy Ruiz brought up and Bootcheck DFA’d. That way they could platoon Ruiz with Overbay at first. Right??? LOLOLOLOLOL.

    • Travis L. says:

…damn computer. Anyway. That being said, I’m hoping to see Zoilo and hoping he does well.

      • Mikhel says:

I saw Randy Ruíz a few times this year playing for the Veracruz Rojos in the Mexican summer league and I highly doubt he could be an upgrade over Overbay (Ruíz batted 0.370 AVG / 0.453 OBP but the summer league is kinda like the PCL, with 30-40 guys batting 0.330 AVG / 0.400 OBP or better and the competition is more like AA than AAA as MLB has rated that league, a different case altogether with the Mexican Winter League where it is harder to bat and have exceptional seasons, most good US rookies fail in the winter league).

  3. The Real Me says:

If they call up Almonte, it was clearly due the outpouring of support on this site. (If anyone from the Yankees FO is monitoring this site please don’t listen to the suggestions made!!!)

    • MannyGeee says:

Yeah, if anyone in the Yankees FO was reading the shit storms that come across this comments thread, our starting 9 would undoubtedly include Shelly Duncan, Jorge Vazquez, Melky Mesa, Greg Golson and Future HoFer Ronnier Mustelier as well…

      • I'mVernonI'mVernon4U says:

And CC Sabathia would have been traded already.

      • Crime Dog says:

Jorge Vazquez!! Wow I forgot about him.

      • Robinson Tilapia says:

We also would have traded for Seth Smith, Ryan Spillborghs, and about ten other guys…

…which, sadly, would have actually included Dom Brown as well.

      • Robinson Tilapia says:

Also, Luke Murton was released last night. I know I remember one of our funny little DOTF regulars commenting something to the effect of “We don’t need a DH. Just play Luke Murton. He can do it…”

      • Get Phelps Up says:

Hafner would have been cut in spring training and so would Ibanez last year.

      • BFDeal says:

        Don’t forget CDick!

      • Mikhel says:

Jorge Vázquez? LOL, it is not like one of the best sluggers in summer and winter league will translate to big league success once he has a chance, look at Puig and Céspedes and how much they’ve failed… well, maybe their success is because they got a chance to play at the big level instead of being relegated to the minors like the yankees do with almost every player they draft and sign internationally.

        • BFDeal says:

Then why didn’t the other 29 teams jump all over him when the Yankees released him?

        • Robinson Tilapia says:

I’m not losing sleep over passing up on those two, as hindsight is always the best GM, but Jorge Vazquez isn’t in the same universe as them.

          CUBA SI, MEJICO NO!

        • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

well, maybe their success is because they got a chance to play at the big level

Or because they are much, much better players than Vazquez.

That might have something to do with it.

You’ll notice no other team has given Vazquez a chance either. It’s not just a Yankee thing.

        • Get Phelps Up says:

          You’re doing this on purpose…

  4. Bartolo's Colon says:

Surprise, surprise. I thought I read that Cashman said if Tex had surgery back in March, he would have been out the whole year, is that true? I thought I remember them saying, if he had surgery (in March) he would have been back in July timeframe vs May if they they just let it heal by itself. Nonetheless, I would bet that he is done for the season. I know it isn’t the same things, but it reminds me of the gardner debacle last year.

    • Crime Dog says:

Yeah I’m pretty sure it was season ending surgery if he had it in March, not a return in July.

    • Mikhel says:

It was season ending surgery, but if they allowed it to heal by itself, the timeframe was may in the best case scenario, july in the worst case scenario.

If he has surgery right now, I wonder if he’ll be OK by march or will he return by may-june of next season.

    • Mandy Stankiewicz says:

It’s not torn again, so hopefully (unlike JoeyBats last year) this thing is good to go in 15.

  5. mitch says:

Don’t forget about how Arod’s injury has been handled

  6. Robinson Tilapia says:

I thought for a second that “recall Zoilo” was going to be the new bone to chop on, but I hadn’t read the post carefully. Color me surprised. They’re definitely not fucking around with mixing pieces up in order to try to make something happen.

Poor Chris Bootcheck. The plight of the marginal veteran.

    • Travis L. says:

Bring up the marginal veteran Dan Johnson!!!

      • trr says:

Becuase you can never have enough marginal veterans…Bur iy’s not like we have a ton of options

        • Robinson Tilapia says:

Marginal veterans play a role, but I think we all know that.

I just think it’s rough to sign that MiLB deal, work your way in, get called up for one appearance and, then, here’s your DFA.

          • Travis L. says:

If he clears waivers, he’d take the job back at AAA, knowing full well that with this team…he has a shot to come back!

            • Robinson Tilapia says:

He’ll have less a shot as the season progresses, I think, especially if the time to play “Is This Anything?” with Dellin Betances is now.

I think he elects free agency.

Thus concludes the longest conversation held as to Chris Bootcheck in about ten years.

        • Travis L. says:

What kinds of presents would he bring to the party though? LOL.

  7. Crime Dog says:

I would like to see Zoilo up just to get a new guy in the mix. Chances they run a double platoon in the OF with Wells/Almonte and Ichiro/Neal?

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

Ichiro’s been much better against LHP than RHP this year.
Ideally (given the circumstances anyways), maybe Almonte/Wells and Hafner/Neal.

      • Crime Dog says:

It’s such a small sample for Ichiro vs LHP, I really don’t think he’s gonna keep that up. And I forgot about Hafner, they’ll probably roll with a rotating platoon where Neal gets some of those ABs vs LHP while half-resting another OF in the DH role in some cases.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

I agree Ichiro won’t keep up the same level, but he has had a reverse split over his career (though he did have a normal split last year). Regardless, Ichiro’s doing it now, may as well ride it until he stops doing it.

  8. nycsportzfan says:

Zolio’s hitting over 280BA against LHP’s. We could use that tonight. Bring em up and stick em in the lineup!

  9. Travis L. says:

Hell, they could DFA Bootcheck, bringing up Dan Johnson, send down Neal and bring up Almonte. Sounds like a lot of moving parts, but I can see it happening.

  10. Travis L. says:

Off topic…anyone see the video with the british guy calling a baseball game??? That is hilarious stuff!!! Saw it on Pinstriped Bible. “The Power of Gordon-Levitt”.

  11. Eddard says:

This is the right call, Warren deserves to be with the MLB club. What I think I would do is if Hughes struggles again tonight to get through 5 innings I’d switch Warren and Hughes’s roles. We know Warren can give us 6 solid innings because he did it in Oakland. Hughes can be a long reliever and maybe eventually a 1-2 inning set up man replacing the shaky Joba.

  12. mitch says:

Thomas Neal batting 5th tonight is a little concerning

  13. The Real Greg says:

I would have immediately put Almonte into this lineup.

    My goodness

  14. I'm One (Because typing all the letters in "The Real Me" is becoming tiresome and might get me confused with "The Real Greg" which is why I dropped the handle originally) says:

Not sure he would have made much of a difference. In place of who?

    • I'm One (Because typing all the letters in "The Real Me" is becoming tiresome and might get me confused with "The Real Greg" which is why I dropped the handle originally) says:

Reply fail to “The Real Greg” above me.

      • jjyank says:

Maybe you should just go back to Cris.

        • I'm One (Because typing all the letters in "The Real Me" is becoming tiresome and might get me confused with "The Real Greg" which is why I dropped the handle originally) says:

Nah. The last name was too long.

  15. Hassey says:

The players at AAA love when Tex is rehabbing with them, because he gives them hotfeet by burning $100 bills instead of scrap paper.

Stamp that thing out quick and then go by yourself new headphones!!!

  16. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

    Youk out 10-12 weeks.

  17. CashmanNinja says:

I supported the Youk signing at the time, but geez…that guy is falling apart and has fallen off the map. He looks nothing like the version from the Red Sox who used to kill us. I guess the Red Sox were smart to move on from him when they did. Too bad we don’t have any replacement :|

  18. The Doctor says:

I really hope the Padres fall straight off the map in the next month. With Youk out and A-Rod’s future uncertain, I would kill to at least have a chance to make a run at Headley.

    • King George says:

Not happening, there’s talk in SD that they may sign the entire IF (Alonso, Gyorko, Cabrera, Headley) to extensions. New ownership, new money, a solid team, and a top-5 farm. Good luck.
