The Yankees’ mission this afternoon, which they really have no choice but to accept, is to beat the hottest team in baseball and start a second half push to sneak into the postseason. It’s a daunting task considering the Rays have won 20 of their last 23 games, the same number of wins New York has in their last 44 games. At some point the Bombers have to start stringing some wins together. Today is as good a day as any. Here’s the lineup that will face Mr. (Chris) Archer:
- CF Brett Gardner
- RF Ichiro Suzuki
- 2B Robinson Cano
- DH Alfonso Soriano
- 1B Lyle Overbay
- LF Vernon Wells
- SS Eduardo Nunez
- 3B Brent Lillibridge
- C Chris Stewart
And on the mound is right-hander Ivan Nova, who declined to sign with the Red Sox as a teenager in the Dominican Republic because he grew up a Yankees fan. He turned down bigger offers from other clubs to take $80k from New York.
First pitch is scheduled for a little after 1:05pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy.
Injury Updates: Derek Jeter (quad) is scheduled to play in simulated game at some point today. Depending on how that goes, he could be activated off the DL tomorrow … Travis Hafner (shoulder) is dealing with some soreness and will have an MRI. Apparently it happened in his last at-bat last night.
