Game 96: Back to Reality

By
(Presswire)

(Presswire)

The All-Star break was a nice step away from the grind of the regular season, but that’s all in the past and the Yankees kick off their unofficial second half tonight. They start a tough seven-game road trip tonight in Boston, a trip that send them to Texas early next week. With New York on the fringes of contention, these seven games will play a huge role in the outcome of their season. They need to start chipping away at their deficit now; the time for patience and waiting has come and gone. Here’s the lineup that will face left-hander Felix Doubront:

  1. CF Brett Gardner
  2. RF Ichiro Suzuki
  3. 2B Robinson Cano
  4. DH Vernon Wells
  5. LF Zoilo Almonte
  6. 1B Lyle Overbay
  7. 3B Brent Lillibridge
  8. SS Eduardo Nunez
  9. C Chris Stewart

And on the mound is left-hander Andy Pettitte, who really needs to straighten things out and pitch better down the stretch. He’s been pretty awful since coming off the DL a few weeks ago.

It has been crazy hot in Boston all day, like temperatures in the triple-digits hot, and it’ll cool down just a bit before game time. There’s no significant threat of rain in the forecast. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and MLB Network nationally. Enjoy.

    Oh, there goes gravity?

  2. fabricio says:

    so we released brennan boesch

  3. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

    Bye, Bye, Brennan Boesch.

  4. trr says:

Again, 7-8-9 is a black hole. I know Lillibridge was mashing in the minors, but can we expect that here? And what about Pettitte? Can we expect him to suddenly “be better”? Can we hit Doubront? He made us look like chumps earlier this year.

Or will the team simply show enormous pride and somehow grind out a tough but needed win? We find out in a few minutes….

    • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

If you figure .341 in AAA is equivalent to about .240 in the Big Leagues (#StatsFromNowhere), no. Lillibridge is just as much a replacement as anyone else. As for Andy, it will be interesting to see how the All Star break affected him. He, like CC, is a second half player so he may pitch better. Dubrount has confounded the Yanks for a while. If I remember correctly Dubrount started in the 9-0 comeback game. I don’t know that pride is enough against the top in the division.

  5. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

Anyone feel like a research project? Does Lillibridge have any sort of record (good or bad) against Future Yankee Felix Doubront?

  6. dkidd says:

tonight reminds me of the scene in gallipoli where the aussies (yankees) are about to go “over the top” and get wiped out by turkish (red sox) machine guns

what are your legs? steel springs!

  7. forensic says:

Certainly would’ve preferred Mustelier be called up than Lillibridge, but I guess that’s never gonna happen.

Hell, even would’ve preferred A-Rod since he’s had lots of rehab time to work through some things and get his legs more under him (as opposed to someone else that, in my opinion, didn’t have that time).

    • MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

FHOFRM JUST came off the DL, and Lillibridge has been hitting the snot out of the ball. Lets let Ronnier get some ABs before we get his monument cast…

      • forensic says:

I’ve never said anything about that hall of famer stuff, so please don’t try to insinuate that.

I know Lillibridge has been hitting, but there’s zero reason for me to believe that’s going to carry over to the bigs. And Mustelier did just come off the DL, but he’s been doing his version of rehab already, so it’s not like he hasn’t played at all in however long it’s been this time.

    • SDB says:

Musty just got off the SWB DL. He’ll need a few games to even get his timing/rhythm back. No harm giving him some time there to get back into some form. Besides, Lillibridge has been getting hits down there lately.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

Musty’s played 1 AAA game since returning from injury and has hit only 250/286/300 in 6 games since returning. May as well let him start swinging the bat well in AAA before considering him, since his bat is likely to be his only value (if he provides any value at all).

  8. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

The obvious way to compete tonight is to knock Doubront out of this game by the 5th. He has longevity issues, so make him work himself into trouble, foul off pitches and get his pitch count up and get to that ‘pen…

  9. dkidd says:

is felix becoming a common name in venezuela?

  10. forensic says:

It has been crazy hot in Boston all day, like temperatures in the triple-digits hot

Welcome to every day out here…

  11. OldYanksFan says:

Where did Lillibridge come from? He has all of a 63 OPS+. Why is he playing? Why is he on this team?

  12. Karl Krawfid says:

    Felix Dubront pitching. Game over.

  13. Anderson Silva says:

    great play

  14. dkidd says:

    beards are stupid

    • Cy Pettitte says:

I feel like they must have done some focus group testing and asked what could possibly make everyone outside Boston hate them more and the answering was a resounding “beards, stupid fucking beards for everyone”

    • vicki says:

beards don’t even approach goatee-level stupid.

  15. dkidd says:

if the yankees were a band, they’d be the quad city dj’s

    okay, i’m done now

  16. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

This game is already almost unwatchable

  17. forensic says:

    Well, that didn’t take long.

  18. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

    This is horrible

  19. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

    yep

  20. SDB says:

    Well that was quick.

  21. forensic says:

    Are you serious???

    Is this the real life?

  22. Cy Pettitte says:

10 minutes in and the 2nd half of the season is about as dreadful as I expected

  23. Anderson Silva says:

pathetic. That was exactly down the middle. Pettitte is done.

  24. dkidd says:

couldn’t give us 1 single inning of hope?

  25. OldYanksFan says:

    And here we go.
Pray we can take 1 of 3.

  26. fabricio says:

i really want him to retire already

  27. Rolling Doughnut says:

    hahahahaha

  28. Rats says:

Andy Pettitte is dead. Long live David Phelps.

  29. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

Not the most confident of starts from the man they call Andrew Pettitte.

  30. Jacob the OG says:

RAB Comment section-The place for yee of little faith

  31. Elton Cod says:

I have to watch the Boston broadcast because I only have regular MLBtv. Before the game the color guy said twice that ‘the Yankees have been winning with pitching and defense’. That’s ridiculous, right? Our defense is two above average outfielders and Cano. I guess Almonte is okay, but Wells seems pretty bad, Overbay is mediocre, and the other side of the infield is all ‘defense-first’ guys who make lots of errors. And Chris Stewart.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

They’ve been at least a top 10 defensive team overall.
      6th in DRS
      9th in UZR

      • Elton Cod says:

Top 10 in MLB? Okay then.

Announcers have a habit of confusing “bad offense” for “good defense”, so I just figured they were doing that.

  32. forensic says:

And of course (just to pile on top of the things that actually matter), my fantasy opponent has Ellsbury (and Encarnacion who has also already homered…).

  33. Anderson Silva says:

no command at all. Everything he throws near the strikezone is up, he’s going to get pounded and it’s not going to be pretty

  34. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

Lillibridge adding value right out of the gate…, huzzah!

  35. Tom says:

    Nunez…

  36. Jacob the OG says:

Lillibridge wearing the number 39? CURSE

  37. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

Way to have your head in the game, Nuneee

  38. Rolling Doughnut says:

    Please settle down Andy.

  39. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

Welcome to the game, Eduardo, you’re the first one here.

  40. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

Solid pitch by AEP there. Maybe he has some command?

  41. forensic says:

That All Star game was the most boring ever, and Mariano is washed up

  42. Jacob the OG says:

I guess 39 is the number for the rotating yankee 3B and 40 for the SS?

  43. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

Ortiz hasn’t missed a beat, still bitching about pitches at a Cooperstown pace.

  44. SDB says:

    What just happened to Nunez?

  45. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

Never seen a pro ballplayer miss a pitch that badly as Wells just did with that fastball.

  46. dkidd says:

chances almonte just strained his quad?

  47. Cy Pettitte says:

Yankees have to be the league leader by far in 1-2-3 single digit pitch count innings

  48. dkidd says:

huh. not me. no one’s ever claimed me handle before

  49. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

I can’t tell if either point is meant to be serious.

  50. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

This sounds like something fake Forensic would say.

  51. Cy Pettitte says:

ARod our savior. I’m counting down the days til he comes back, puts the team on his centaurian back and carries us to the promised land.

  52. Darren says:

OOh that waitress with the green shirt had a very nice walk up the stairs behind the plate.

  53. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

    Cooked.

  54. Cy Pettitte says:

Pettitte’s done. this is just ridiculous, can’t keep rolling him out there to get crushed.

  55. forensic says:

Ugh, I miss last years Andy Pettitte.

  56. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

    This is the worst

  57. Anderson Silva says:

He’s just embarrassing himself now. Please retire.

  58. dkidd says:

    batting practice

  59. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

    Goddammit Andy. He’s not right.

  60. Rolling Doughnut says:

    Andy’s pitching BP —again.

  61. Eddard says:

This team will never score 3 runs tonight. Andy just can’t pitch in the AL East anymore.

  62. Pat D says:

Hey, guys and gals, I just got here. Have I missed anyth……oh. Oh, I see.

Well, my accounting homework looks more entertaining now. Think I’ll go do that instead.

Mostly because looking at Fenway Park for extended periods of time makes me physically ill.

  63. Tom T says:

sell, sell, sell please. This team can’t hang with AL East power houses.

  64. Cy Pettitte says:

can’t put anyone away. these games a seriously painful to watch.

  65. forensic says:

    Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  66. Roadgeek Adam says:

Stay positive people. I also point out its only the 2nd inning. Skeptical or not, can’t give up till Out 27.

    • dkidd says:

as someone who seems interested in uniform numbers, a question: why isn’t 10 a more popular number across the game?

      rizzuto
      lefty grove
      chris chambliss
      chipper jones
      larry bowa

      can’t think of any others

      • forensic says:

If you like uniform numbers, here’s a little something for you. It gives you a few more names.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L.....ed_numbers

        • Roadgeek Adam says:

The biggest issue I have is that the Yankees front office/uniform department just is a total headache. Why do we have 4 61s already? 3 22s, 3 39s? Isn’t it really silly?

Mets, as I mentioned, have reused 1 number, 47 between Aaron Laffey and Andrew Brown.

The Mets are so much easier to work with.

There’s a developing pattern with the changes by seasons.

      • Roadgeek Adam says:

        Tony LaRussa and Jim Leyland.

Not really sure why 10 is such a low count number, however, a lot of 10s are retired:

Sparky Anderson, Rusty Staub and Andre Dawson included.

        • Pat D says:

Technically, Staub and Dawson don’t have their numbers retired anymore.

          • Roadgeek Adam says:

Technically, but they meant something then. ;)

Gary Carter and Tim Raines as well.

            • Pat D says:

Oh, absolutely. I mean, on one hand, the Nationals had no obligation to keep those numbers retired.

On the other, it’s just a firm reminder of how that franchise was destroyed.

              • Roadgeek Adam says:

If MLB would expand to 36 teams (and I don’t expect they will, although I’d like it), Montreal could get its team back.

                Although I want a 3rd Canadian franchise.

                • Pat D says:

They can’t afford to go beyond 32 if they ever expand again. And I don’t expect they’ll do that for a while.

                  • Roadgeek Adam says:

Can’t afford it? Find the right television deal, anything is possible.

                    • Pat D says:

I think that would stretching it way too thin, really. Football only has 32 teams, even with the rosters being larger. I just am not sure that there are 6 other markets out there that can really support a team.

  67. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

Justin Timberlake and Jay Z are coming to Fenway… So that’s something.

  68. MannyGeee-Proven Starter says:

Gosh if we make the playoffs my taco stand is giving free taco dinners to my friends here

    • MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

Not homoerotic at all, but the not-so-subtle racist undertone was a nice touch. You zinged when I thought you’d zag… Well played.

  69. forensic says:

Sterling: “No one can tell you why he’s hitting .367.”

Well, I can tell you part of it. A .414 BABIP helps a bit.

Thankfully, he’s really coming back to reality a bit the last couple weeks or month.

  70. Anderson Silva says:

    I cant stand Caucasian players

  71. Duh Injuries says:

Pettitte should either accept a phony disabled list visit or retire for the good of the team because he is absolutely unacceptable out there. 3-0 Red Sox at Fenway? That might as well be 7-0 the way the Yanks are hitting.

    Sababthia/Kuroda/Hughes/Nova/Phelps

If Pettitte wants to play baseball and play only for the Yankees next seasonn, he should be given no more than a minor-league contract where he makes $3M if he makes the team and if he stinks after the first ten starts release him, that’s it. I could care less that some other team/s would give him a guaranteed contract – good, go ahead.

  72. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

You know, I really want to like Lillibridge… I really do. But that shit ain’t gonna do it here. And also, thanks Nunie for forgetting how to hit. Not like offense is needed here or anything

  73. Cy Pettitte says:

    3 innings, 29 pitches, 0 hits.

  74. Tom says:

Either Victorino is hurt or he was doing his best Robbie Cano impression on that DP.

I thought they would turn it, but it wasn’t even close.

  75. Anderson Silva says:

Arrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiibbbaaaa My Papi Chulos Go Boston.

  76. Andy Pettitte says:

Dudes, whatcha want. I’m soold when I fart, dust comes out..
What do you call a Midget, psychic escaping prison??

  77. forensic says:

Waldman comes back from commercial and says “Well, we have one substitution.”

I guess it’s understandable that I immediately expected it to be a Yankee (maybe Almonte) rather than a Red Sox player.

    • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

Makes sense if you weren’t watching. Victorino struggled getting down the line. Turns out he was hurt.

  78. forensic says:

Ouw, Ouw..I know, I know. Mr Pettitte..A Small Medium at Large..

  79. Roadgeek Adam says:

Mike Everitt’s K-zone is a bit out of my preference range.

  80. Brennan says:

Why did they release me? I can at least hit with power.

  81. nsalem says:

My Guess would be Phil Niekro, Satchell Paige and Hoyt Wilhelm. I’m pretty sure about Paige,

  82. forensic says:

Hey, Melky, MessyMessa, Thats My Line. Ya Scallywag..

  83. Kramerica Industries says:

I absolutely hate any of these “if [Team X] goes .500 the rest of the way, then [Team Y] must do at least this good to match that” ideas.

The Red Sox and Yankees play 13 head-to-heads the rest of the way. In a base case scenario this weekend, the Yankees can chop half their deficit off. That is about a 1000 times more important than “rest of the way” projections.

  84. nsalem says:

Wasn’t Lyon part of the Schilling trade?

  85. Brennan says:

Me, Forensic and two other gays were taking a bath in a tub, well, a Wad of cum floats to the surface..Heck, I jump out and scream
    “Who just farted??”

  86. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

Can we have a brawl? Just for entertainment? Bring me Arroyo, Varitek, ARod and Sheff and just have them go at it.

  87. dkidd says:

i actually thought that was going to be off the wall

    overestimated ichiro’s power somewhat

  88. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

Gardy!!!! Atta way to hustle down the line there

  89. Anderson Silva says:

very nice, taking the bat out of Cano’s hands

  90. Anderson Silva says:

    yay!!

  91. forensic says:

Gardner creating the run all by himself. Nice!

  92. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

    GARDYYYYYYYY

  93. Roadgeek Adam says:

    Well there is a run.

It would be funny as hell if this is a 1-0 lead not 3-1 deficit.

  94. Cy Pettitte says:

that throw was so bad lol

  95. Rolling Doughnut says:

Gardner manufactures one all by himself. Nice.

  96. nsalem says:

Wow Four guys in a tub, and Nobody invites me..I’m having a Missy Fit..

  97. Eddard says:

That’s the only way they can score runs now, if Gritty gutty Gardner steals 2nd and 3rd and they throw the ball into left field.

  98. forensic says:

    And I’m a Soap Drooper..

  99. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

PROPOSAL: Everyone grows one of those Giambi mustaches.

  100. Roadgeek Adam says:

Wow, we just got a break there….

    I totally would’ve called that Strike 3.

  101. Rolling Doughnut says:

    Looked like a strike.

  102. Pa Poo says:

Trade Pettitte to the Rangers for Beltre!
    Win-win! Right? Right?

  103. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

Wells is chasing shit up in the eyes all night. Worrisome

    • forensic says:

Fastball up, slider low and away.

It’s like Alfonso Soriano a decade later. Just with less speed, and less power, and less ability to hit for average…

  104. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

    That was just awful.

  105. Pat D says:

    wWELL, I Never, Troll.!!

  106. Anderson Silva says:

at his helmet, he still swings at it.

  107. Rolling Doughnut says:

    God Wells is terrible.

  108. Roadgeek Adam says:

    Alright, Mike Everitt is inconsistent.

    • MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

Nope, he’s consistently calling those REALLY bad low pitches strikes. I just don’t think Andy’s found that out yet.

  109. SDB says:

    He’s still throwing a no-hitter.

  110. Pa Poo says:

Well, Al the fake Rev Sharpton wants to Rally after a jury rules in a case. How about White people Protesting paying for Their welfare, food stamps and medicaid..Where were You and your cronnies during the unfair OJ Simpson verdict, Partying and Celebrating.

  111. Roadgeek Adam says:

Yankees and Mets have exactly zero hits tonight.

And have given up 14 runs combined.

    Ouch.

  112. SDB says:

    Right on Poo.

  113. Rolling Doughnut says:

Sharpton is a Racist, and has AIDS now so we hear..

  114. Winter says:

Just got here. I see the Yankees scored their obligatory one run.

  115. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

Pedroia with the gift strike out.

  116. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

As a guy who wants to retire everyone’s number (and wonders when Overbay is going to switch his because Hideki Matsui day is in 9 days) Interesting to see Sox leaving number 5 open to players.

    • Roadgeek Adam says:

I don’t know if Matsui’s 55 is going. It’s been used since he left.

I think this is just something of respect.

      • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

Oh I’m perfectly aware. Just interesting that the Sox haven’t kept Nomar’s out of other players’ hands.

        • Roadgeek Adam says:

Red Sox have specialty retirement criteria.

Has to be in Hall of Fame and played 10 years with the Red Sox.

Nomar went 8 and is not in the HOF, yet.

          • Pat D says:

And they’ve refused to retire Boggs’ number.

            Gee, I wonder why.

            • Roadgeek Adam says:

              Heh.

Tampa Bay did, even with just two years.

I question that really. However, Rockies are probably waiting for Todd Helton retire to retire their first.

              • Pat D says:

It was because he got his 3000th hit with them, more or less. But the Red Sox have these “rules,” they “broke” them to retire Johnny Pesky’s number, but they won’t retire Boggs’ number, probably almost entirely because he went to the Yankees.

I’m sure Colorado will retire Helton’s number. I wonder if/when Miami, Seattle and Washington will retire a number. Well, for Seattle, they’re probably waiting on Edgar, Griffey or Johnson getting into the HOF.

  117. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

Pettitte needs the k here in the worst possible way.

  118. Rolling Doughnut says:

Gomes got one right down the middle. WTF Andy.

  119. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

Wow, that popup was a lucky break

  120. Kramerica Industries says:

Gotta say, thinking back to when I was younger, and given that I am a Florida Gators fan, have been my entire life, it is really a wonder to me that I didn’t become a Mets fan when I was younger.

You know, blue and orange. Would’ve been so much more natural. And I’d probably be a lot more miserable.

  121. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

Wow that was a great throw.

  122. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

    A HIT

  123. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

    There goes the no hitter

  124. Rolling Doughnut says:

    An XBH. I’m pumped.

  125. nsalem says:

will Lillibridge go to the left and advance the runner because he is gritty

  126. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

Lillibridge looks nine years old. Much like Edwar Ramirez (this is definitely the first Edwar Ramirez reference in a few years)

  127. Rolling Doughnut says:

2 K for Littledick. Don’t they throw 90 in AAA?

  128. Mick taylor says:

Why do the Yankee hitters look like they aretired? They play with no energy they all try to be cool at the plate give me back Brennan boesch

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

      Boesch?
Why not ask for somebody good?
Or at least somebody healthy enough to actually play?

      • Pat D says:

        Facts don’t penetrate Mick’s bubble.

Must be all the drugs he took with Keith during the Exile on Main St. sessions.

  129. Roadgeek Adam says:

Meanwhile Marlon Byrd just crushed HR No. 16 (RBIs 52-53-54) to cut into an 11 run deficit.

  130. nsalem says:

    Stewart is definitely due.

  131. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

CHRIS STEWART RBI THE WORLD IS ENDING CALL THE FEDS

  132. Roadgeek Adam says:

    Chris Stewart, holy shit.

  133. Cy Pettitte says:

    well that was unexpected

  134. Kramerica Industries says:

    Stewart, jeez.

That’s usually a routine flyball in the Bronx.

  135. nsalem says:

That’s it till the 3rd week in August. Don’t expect more.

  136. Winter says:

    Chirs Stewart, doubles machine.

  137. Elton Cod says:

Like I kept saying last year, Chris Stewart is just a better, more reliable hitter than Russell Martin. I’m happy we dumped Russell and kept him.

    • Winter says:

      Chris Stewart is a career 64 wRC+. Martin’s at 103 wRC+. Even last year, Martin led Stewart 96 wRC+ to 66 wRC+.

You’re welcome to keep saying that, you’ll just keep being wrong.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

      lmao.
      Try joining reality.

  138. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

    YANKEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS BLOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

    • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

I’m honored. Been away for months and get handle-stolen the day I come back in any meaningful quantity. Frankly the all-caps does make it realistic

  139. SDB says:

Suzyn just called Stewart a great clutch hitter, and is now comparing him to Jose Molina.

    I’m choking as I type.

    • MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

Sure, Molina wasn’t a slugger by any means.., but um WUT? Stewart isn’t Mike Piazza or anything.

  140. Eddard says:

Drive in Stewie here and they’ll have a chance. Get the game to Kelley-Drob-Mo with at least a tie.

  141. Roadgeek Adam says:

I really need a Man tonight.

  142. Rolling Doughnut says:

The number 9 guy knocks one in. Which of the 7 number nines you ask? Why Chris f*n Stewart that’s which one.

  143. Elton Cod says:

Fuck that umpire. I hope he dies.

  144. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

God Gardner control yourself. You can’t do that. No discipline.

  145. Roadgeek Adam says:

    Brett Gardner gets himself ejected.

    Had to happen eventually.

Next time Gardner should’ve just tackled Everitt.

  146. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

    Not very smart, Gardy.

  147. Kramerica Industries says:

    Fucking asshole.

  148. Rolling Doughnut says:

    Flexible zone tonight huh.

  149. Eddard says:

That was not a strike but Gardy should not have done that. Now they’ve got nobody.

  150. Rolling Doughnut says:

Geek, Try a site I like, Gayties.com Great for those Alone nights when te man doesnt showup and the blowup doll Fizzles out.

  151. nsalem says:

Ichiro center Lillibridge right Cruz to 3rd

  152. DERP says:

Greg Bird has three home runs through five innings for Charleston.

  153. Pasta says:

Quickiest hook i have ever seen. Wtf girardi needs to get tossed too.

    • Winter says:

Gardner definitely deserved it. Did you see how he threw his helmet? Throwing equipment at all is a big no-no, and that was a very emphatic throw.

It was an awful call, but the ejection’s Gardner’s fault.

  154. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

I want to see K-Zone on that pitch for my irrational nostalgic love for K-Zone

  155. Roadgeek Adam says:

I would sense we have a spam troll here.

  156. Kramerica Industries says:

The US needs to stay out of other peoples nations and stop being war mongers around the world., I dont want nice foreigners hating me.

  157. SDB says:

Gardy needs to learn from Paul O’Neill and just take it out on the water cooler.

  158. Kramerica Industries says:

There has been this one moron at Fenway Park the past few years, where after every strikeout, they put up these two odd-something round posters or something.

I mean, does anyone even know what the fuck those things mean?

  159. nsalem says:

Cruz will get the winning hit tonight.

  160. Pasta says:

    Great almonte hurt too

  161. DERP says:

    kRAMERICA, Like your style, dude.

    • Kramerica Industries says:

Kinda sorta hope you’ve sensed the troll who’s stealing handles tonight.

Because, well, if it’s a post that sounds completely out of character, then it probably is.

  162. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

Tell me Waldman just mentioned PFP

  163. Cy Pettitte says:

they didn’t even mention Almonte coming out of the game…

  164. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

    Almonte out as well?

  165. Winter says:

Pettitte fielding his position decently, for a change.

  166. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

    Almonte is out?

  167. Pasta says:

Almonte needs to lose a few pounds and get angry, then he would be a Leaner, Meaner, Beaner for us.

  168. Winter says:

    What happened to Zoilo?

  169. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

Speculation about Almonte injury running out the grounder confirmed

  170. Kramerica Industries says:

    STFU Winter.

  171. Kramerica Industries says:

So glad that “patience” thingy has suddenly disappeared again this inning.

  172. Winter says:

    Okay.

  173. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

Nice to see Michael Kay paying close attention to the game.

  174. Roadgeek Adam says:

Wait, Alberto Gonzalez is in LF, batting 1st? I’m lost.

  175. Tyrone Sharpton says:

LOL at kay/the crew having no clue about almonte being out

  176. Kramerica Industries says:

There is this really Cool dude in Boston that holds up these nice signs whenever one of the Sox great pitchers gets a strikeout

  177. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

Had to let my iPad charge while I gave my kid a bath. Did I say anything homoerotic or racist while I was away?

  178. Roadgeek Adam says:

Tyrone Sharpton, Are you a negroid, and what are you wearing right now

    • Roadgeek Adam says:

Mike & Matt, if you’re reading these. You might want to IP check this thing.

(This isn’t the first blog I’ve had my handle stolen, interestingly, both trolls have made bad sex jokes.)

      • Kramerica Industries says:

JoePawl is the king slayer of trolls, so I’d really like him to make his rare appearance and do the honours here.

      • Tyrone Sharpton says:

i don’t think registration would be a bad idea on this site

      • MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

It’s standard handle jacker fare. Pick a name, make some gay jokes, thro in some racist stuff, then go back t moms basement and jack off…

  179. Pasta says:

    Im not wearing any underwear.

  180. MannyGeee-Proven Starter says:

Glad to be back, My man is on his way home, wants Quiche tonight, and had to fix myself up for a Banging night of Amouuur Riinngg..Oops, He’s here., Ciao

  181. Kramerica Industries says:

    Pasta, Send me some pics.

  182. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

Frankly I would take 6IP 3 ER 92 pitches from AEP any other day.

  183. Anderson Silva says:

that was not amazing, that was lucky

  184. BigBlueAL says:

This has to be a record for most utility infielders playing at the same time on 1 team.

  185. Anderson Silva says:

so why did Gardner get tossed?

  186. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

    Is this Daisuke? Hideki Okajima?

  187. Mick taylor says:

So idiot cashman cuts boesch who we could use if almonte is disabled . I am sick of Michael Kay always talking up how great Ted Williams was and nary a mention of DiMaggio people who actually saw them play said Joe was the greater player . Hey Kay , how about mentioning Joe wasabetterhitter than Ted in ballparks other than Fenway and Yankee stadium.how about 9 championships to zero mikey

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

Newsflash. Boesch is injured. He’s been out since early June.

    • MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

You realize that Boesch is hurt and not particularly close to coming back. Settle down Francis.

    • Roadgeek Adam says:

I assume, if the Yankees put Almonte on the DL, they’ll recall Neal.

Unless they want to try with Adonis Garcia. (I’d love Ronnier myself, but let him get in a groove again.)

      • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

I’d guess either Neal or Adams. Or somebody not in the org.

        • Roadgeek Adam says:

          I don’t expect an infielder.

Neal is the top choice. Unless they want to chance with Melky Mesa (Doubtful.)

          • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

Probably not Adams, especially with ARod due back soon. But I could see a possibility of going with Adams @ 3B for a while with Lillibridge as the 4th OF.

      • MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

I could see them bringing Neal back up for roster reasons. Although Ronnier (albeit a Ronnier that hasn’t spent the past month on the DL) would be the better choice.

      • Pasta says:

Garcia or melky gets a shot. Dickerson got dfaed could be a quick bandaid.

    • WhittakerWalt says:

WTF do you care what people said about baseball players from 70 years ago? Also, championships don’t tell you how good a player is. Also also, Ted Williams was probably the best hitter of all time. 190 career OPS+ compared to DiMaggio’s 155.

  188. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

Wow. Tazawa got squeezed in at least 2 of those pitches to Lillibridge.

  189. Winter says:

So Brent still has yet to put the ball in play.

  190. Anderson Silva says:

    Nunez is pathetic

  191. Pasta says:

Im back did i miss anything or say anything

  192. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

It blows my mind that the hockey schedule is out already. Didn’t they just end like 2 weeks ago?

    • Roadgeek Adam says:

Beningo and Roberts wants basketball season to start already.

    • momomo says:

we don’t care. we like baseball.

      • MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

That’s not fair or true. Some people here like tacos, others like bathtub semen, some like quiche, others like scantily dressed ‘negroids’…

And many posters here like hockey. I can take it or leave it to be honest, it’s just weird that, in comparison to baseball if it helps you at all, they seem to whip that schedule out quick. ESPECIALLY considering that many hockey teams need to balance schedules with basketball teams that share a stadium.

  193. Pasta says:

And by the way i am wearing underwear. It was a gift from Arod.

  194. Pasta says:

    Defensive catcher my ass

  195. Pasta says:

Thanks stewie you give and take away

  196. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

    Lillibridge belongs in Low-A

  197. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

    Fucking Iglecias. Goddammit.

  198. Wow says:

This team truly is awful. I really hope they do sell at the deadline so that we can be put out of our misery. There’s no way they have the talent to trade their way to contention by the end of the month. They just need to focus on rebuilding for next year and filll in the holes using the one thing they can actually do well: using cash. Otherwise, they will be fooling themselves if they think they are one healthy A-Rod and Jeter from contending.

  199. Pasta says:

Just bean elsbury logan you piece of crap.

  200. Pasta says:

Umps have on their red sox tonight.

  201. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

Tough non strike call from Everett there.

  202. Winter says:

In all honesty that pitch probably wasn’t a strike. But, from what I can tell, the umpires have been crazy inconsistent today.

  203. Pasta says:

    Arod 2 – 4 tonight
Must be sucking on those steroid losenges.

  204. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

I feel not good about Breslow here.

  205. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

I remember Breslow being more 3/4 on the delivery than over the top.. Am I imagining things or has he changed?

  206. Rolling Doughnut says:

Second half will be ugly. Jeter, ARod and Granderson won’t be rescuing this team. Start over.

  207. Pasta says:

    Sprained ankle for almonte
    Three four days rest.

  208. momomo says:

“Back to Reality” is a very appropriate title for this thread

  209. Kramerica Industries says:

    “Only” a double.

    Probably won’t be good enough.

  210. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

Here come 3 pitches at the eyes to Wells.

  211. Pasta says:

Did he hold up ichiro why

  212. Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting) says:

    Vernon…

  213. fabricio says:

wow wells sucks please release him

  214. Cy Pettitte says:

    so fucking depressing

  215. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

    Shitshitshitshitshit

  216. BigBlueAL says:

Wells should be immediately released after that at-bat.

  217. Tom says:

I believe the Yankees have popped out 6 times this game.

  218. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

2nd and 3rd 1 out no runs. Vaguely reminiscent of the playoffs

  219. Pasta says:

Can we get ibanez back for jobber

  220. momomo says:

Gandhi once said, “Hate the sin, love the sinner.” To that I say, I fucking hate you Vernon Wells.

  221. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

Trade everyone except CC and Cano for mike trout

  222. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

    Dear Ichiro:

    Throw. The. Fucking. Ball. Faster.
    What DAFAQ!

    Regards-

    The rest of us

  223. Anderson Silva says:

so they had one last chance and Wells blew it.. so fucking predictable. At least we only have him for one more year. CASHMAN IS GOD!

    • WhittakerWalt says:

No one thinks he’s God, but he has presided over 6 WS teams and 4 World Champions. In other words, more than any other GM in baseball has done. Then the team was hit by approximately 8 million injuries AND the front office pretended they didn’t like spending money anymore. What’s a GM to do?

  224. Pasta says:

I feel like i am watching the yankees vs duck dynasty.

  225. nsalem says:

Got some big bats coming up this inning. I’m very confident.

  226. Joe says:

Yank will get swept in my opinion. Then will have an offseason picking up other teams trash like Ben Francisco.

  227. MannyGeee - Proven Starter says:

Bright side, Lillibridge put a ball in play.

  228. nsalem says:

    A well spent 3 hours.

  229. Anderson Silva says:

god forbid Cashman acquires or develops a good player. What a fucking joke of a GM.

    • WhittakerWalt says:

      Suggestions?

      • Pa Poo says:

Not giving terrible contracts to Teix, CC, Ichiro, Wells, Youk.
        A-Rod isn’t his fault.

        • WhittakerWalt says:

The Tex contract only looks bad in hindsight. At the time it was considered a massive coup. Same with CC. We didn’t sign Wells to anything. That was a trade. Youk was a mad signing, but options were very limited at the time and it’s only for one year. What would you have done? It’s not enough to just say Cashman did a bad job, you have to say what you would have done instead.

  230. Kramerica Industries says:

Next three series, Red Sox and Tigers and Rays, Oh My

  231. forensic says:

Well, that sucked. Start the second half the same way as the first half, losing to the Red Sox while only scoring two runs.

  232. Tim Powers says:

Poor Robby Cano. hits a double and following him. Ice Cold Wells, and freaking Cruz.

  233. David N says:

This helpless feeling that sets in as soon as the other team has a two-run lead is getting really old.

  234. Pasta says:

Silva, Meet me at this address tonight 227 E 56 St, (212)753-2222

  235. momomo says:

Definitely in need of some kind of rebuilding. It’s been all Cano and pitching for two years now:
    http://www.fangraphs.com/leade.....;players=0
The only issue now is that instead of a slightly above average supporting cast, we have a team of triple A fringe prospects and 2006 all stars who have nothing left in the tank. But where to begin with no real tradeable assets? Nice job setting us up for the future Brian. Old and regressing to the middle is never the way to go. Guess that’s what happens when your team carries the majority of the least appealing contracts in the league.

  236. nOnOnO says:

    uP YOUR AR#@E mOmO WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

  237. Tim Powers says:

I also can’tstand the NY Giants Cruz, all that money and he bitches, Go back to your banana plantation if you don’t like it here

  238. forensic says:

Gotta consider going back to my Red Sox bandwagon, as I grew up in Welsley.

  239. BigBlueAL says:

This team is in real danger of being out of the playoff chase by the end of this month. They will need an unbelievable final 2 months to make the playoffs.

  240. Jonah Falcon says:

Can’t see the Yanks selling OR buying at the deadline. They have NO ASSETS to sell save Cano. They have no one in the minors.

  241. Jacob the OG says:

    ok time to sell

  242. WhittakerWalt says:

It’s pretty simple: Andy gives up 4 runs every time he pitches. Our offense is almost completely incapable of scoring 5 runs. Ergo, every Andy start is a loss. And there’s really nothing to be done about it. It’s not like he’s getting DFAed.

  243. Mick taylor says:

Oh stats mean more than championships? . Stats from70 years ago mean nothing? Baseball is all about stats. That is why people are so upset about steroids destroying the legacy of the game . Joe was a better hitter than Williams if you take Yankee stadium out of the numbers. Had Ted played in Yankee stadium as a right handed hitter like Joe his stats would be worse than joe
