Game 96: Back to Reality

Martin: Tigers have interest in Joba Chamberlain
Yankees release Brennan Boesch
(Presswire)
(Presswire)

The All-Star break was a nice step away from the grind of the regular season, but that’s all in the past and the Yankees kick off their unofficial second half tonight. They start a tough seven-game road trip tonight in Boston, a trip that send them to Texas early next week. With New York on the fringes of contention, these seven games will play a huge role in the outcome of their season. They need to start chipping away at their deficit now; the time for patience and waiting has come and gone. Here’s the lineup that will face left-hander Felix Doubront:

  1. CF Brett Gardner
  2. RF Ichiro Suzuki
  3. 2B Robinson Cano
  4. DH Vernon Wells
  5. LF Zoilo Almonte
  6. 1B Lyle Overbay
  7. 3B Brent Lillibridge
  8. SS Eduardo Nunez
  9. C Chris Stewart

And on the mound is left-hander Andy Pettitte, who really needs to straighten things out and pitch better down the stretch. He’s been pretty awful since coming off the DL a few weeks ago.

It has been crazy hot in Boston all day, like temperatures in the triple-digits hot, and it’ll cool down just a bit before game time. There’s no significant threat of rain in the forecast. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10pm ET and can be seen on YES locally and MLB Network nationally. Enjoy.

    Oh, there goes gravity?

    • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

      Oops there goes Rabbit?

  • fabricio

    so we released brennan boesch

    • trr

you got the first word right

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

    Bye, Bye, Brennan Boesch.

    • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

I’m making my surprised face right now.

    • forensic

No big deal to me, but I’m sure there’ll be some interesting comments in that next thread for it.

  • trr

Again, 7-8-9 is a black hole. I know Lillibridge was mashing in the minors, but can we expect that here? And what about Pettitte? Can we expect him to suddenly “be better”? Can we hit Doubront? He made us look like chumps earlier this year.

Or will the team simply show enormous pride and somehow grind out a tough but needed win? We find out in a few minutes….

    • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

If you figure .341 in AAA is equivalent to about .240 in the Big Leagues (#StatsFromNowhere), no. Lillibridge is just as much a replacement as anyone else. As for Andy, it will be interesting to see how the All Star break affected him. He, like CC, is a second half player so he may pitch better. Dubrount has confounded the Yanks for a while. If I remember correctly Dubrount started in the 9-0 comeback game. I don’t know that pride is enough against the top in the division.

  • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Anyone feel like a research project? Does Lillibridge have any sort of record (good or bad) against Future Yankee Felix Doubront?

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

      0-2

  • dkidd

tonight reminds me of the scene in gallipoli where the aussies (yankees) are about to go “over the top” and get wiped out by turkish (red sox) machine guns

what are your legs? steel springs!

  • forensic

Certainly would’ve preferred Mustelier be called up than Lillibridge, but I guess that’s never gonna happen.

Hell, even would’ve preferred A-Rod since he’s had lots of rehab time to work through some things and get his legs more under him (as opposed to someone else that, in my opinion, didn’t have that time).

    • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

FHOFRM JUST came off the DL, and Lillibridge has been hitting the snot out of the ball. Lets let Ronnier get some ABs before we get his monument cast…

      • forensic

I’ve never said anything about that hall of famer stuff, so please don’t try to insinuate that.

I know Lillibridge has been hitting, but there’s zero reason for me to believe that’s going to carry over to the bigs. And Mustelier did just come off the DL, but he’s been doing his version of rehab already, so it’s not like he hasn’t played at all in however long it’s been this time.

    • SDB

Musty just got off the SWB DL. He’ll need a few games to even get his timing/rhythm back. No harm giving him some time there to get back into some form. Besides, Lillibridge has been getting hits down there lately.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Musty’s played 1 AAA game since returning from injury and has hit only 250/286/300 in 6 games since returning. May as well let him start swinging the bat well in AAA before considering him, since his bat is likely to be his only value (if he provides any value at all).

  • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

The obvious way to compete tonight is to knock Doubront out of this game by the 5th. He has longevity issues, so make him work himself into trouble, foul off pitches and get his pitch count up and get to that ‘pen…

    • forensic

Unfortunately, the Yankees for some reason seem to be unable to do that against him. He has 5 starts against them, never lasted less than 6 full innings, and only once given up even 3 ER.

      • dkidd

tonight is the ultimate “reverse lock”

        • forensic

Sure hope so. They’re certainly due to hit him, if you believe in that.

  • dkidd

is felix becoming a common name in venezuela?

    • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Becoming? You realize Felix is a very common Hispanic name, right?

      • dkidd

should have said “more common” name. wondering if there’s been a king felix “bump”

  • forensic

It has been crazy hot in Boston all day, like temperatures in the triple-digits hot

Welcome to every day out here…

  • OldYanksFan

Where did Lillibridge come from? He has all of a 63 OPS+. Why is he playing? Why is he on this team?

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Because injuries, and somebody has to play.

  • Karl Krawfid

    Felix Dubront pitching. Game over.

  • Anderson Silva

    great play

  • dkidd

    beards are stupid

    • Cy Pettitte

I feel like they must have done some focus group testing and asked what could possibly make everyone outside Boston hate them more and the answering was a resounding “beards, stupid fucking beards for everyone”

    • vicki

beards don’t even approach goatee-level stupid.

      • dkidd

what do you call the thing on ellsbury’s face?

  • dkidd

if the yankees were a band, they’d be the quad city dj’s

    okay, i’m done now

  • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

This game is already almost unwatchable

  • forensic

    Well, that didn’t take long.

  • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

    This is horrible

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

    yep

  • SDB

    Well that was quick.

  • forensic

    Are you serious???

    Is this the real life?

  • Cy Pettitte

10 minutes in and the 2nd half of the season is about as dreadful as I expected

  • Anderson Silva

pathetic. That was exactly down the middle. Pettitte is done.

  • dkidd

couldn’t give us 1 single inning of hope?

  • OldYanksFan

    And here we go.
Pray we can take 1 of 3.

    • SDB

Maybe the Sox hitters will tire their arms out hitting so many pitches into the seats tonight, and there’ll be a chance tomorrow?

      • forensic

        lol, ouch.

      • Pa Poo

Good point. Pettitte is pulling a rope-a-dope.

  • fabricio

i really want him to retire already

  • Rolling Doughnut

    hahahahaha

  • Rats

Andy Pettitte is dead. Long live David Phelps.

    • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

The old king is dead long live his illegitimate son’s cousin.

  • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Not the most confident of starts from the man they call Andrew Pettitte.

    • forensic

      You forgot the Eugene.

      • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

He hasn’t earned his Eugene lately. Keep this mutherfucker close and I will reconsider some Eugene action.

  • Jacob the OG

RAB Comment section-The place for yee of little faith

    • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

All the bridge jumper syndrome from Over the Monster last year is hitting us.

  • Elton Cod

I have to watch the Boston broadcast because I only have regular MLBtv. Before the game the color guy said twice that ‘the Yankees have been winning with pitching and defense’. That’s ridiculous, right? Our defense is two above average outfielders and Cano. I guess Almonte is okay, but Wells seems pretty bad, Overbay is mediocre, and the other side of the infield is all ‘defense-first’ guys who make lots of errors. And Chris Stewart.

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

They’ve been at least a top 10 defensive team overall.
      6th in DRS
      9th in UZR

      • Elton Cod

Top 10 in MLB? Okay then.

Announcers have a habit of confusing “bad offense” for “good defense”, so I just figured they were doing that.

  • forensic

And of course (just to pile on top of the things that actually matter), my fantasy opponent has Ellsbury (and Encarnacion who has also already homered…).

  • Anderson Silva

no command at all. Everything he throws near the strikezone is up, he’s going to get pounded and it’s not going to be pretty

  • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Lillibridge adding value right out of the gate…, huzzah!

  • Tom

    Nunez…

  • Jacob the OG

Lillibridge wearing the number 39? CURSE

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Way to have your head in the game, Nuneee

    • forensic

WHat happened? I didn’t hear JOHn and Suzyn say anything about him.

      • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Nunez started running off the field after Lillibridge caught the line drive for the second out.

        • forensic

          Ah, thanks.

  • Rolling Doughnut

    Please settle down Andy.

  • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

Welcome to the game, Eduardo, you’re the first one here.

  • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

Solid pitch by AEP there. Maybe he has some command?

  • forensic

That All Star game was the most boring ever, and Mariano is washed up

    • forensic

Ah, the height of maturity on display again.

  • Jacob the OG

I guess 39 is the number for the rotating yankee 3B and 40 for the SS?

  • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Ortiz hasn’t missed a beat, still bitching about pitches at a Cooperstown pace.

  • SDB

    What just happened to Nunez?

    • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

He forgot how to count to three

      • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

In fairness, he spent a lot of time on the DL… There is no concept of outs in rehab assignments.

  • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Never seen a pro ballplayer miss a pitch that badly as Wells just did with that fastball.

    • Cy Pettitte

Wells’ past swings against outside sliders have been worse

  • dkidd

chances almonte just strained his quad?

    • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

      Insanely good. INSANELY

  • Cy Pettitte

Yankees have to be the league leader by far in 1-2-3 single digit pitch count innings

  • dkidd

huh. not me. no one’s ever claimed me handle before

    • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Handle grabber… I am sure I am about to post something homoerotic soon as well.

  • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

I can’t tell if either point is meant to be serious.

  • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

This sounds like something fake Forensic would say.

    • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

      My thoughts exactly.

    • forensic

Looks like he’s making the rounds through several of the names.

      • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

I suspect it’s the doing of an OTM guy.

        • forensic

Who knows, just seems pointless to me. Is this really the best thing they have to do with their time? I’ve never even been over to OTM (well, I guess I read one thread after a particular game a couple of years ago, but that’s it).

  • Cy Pettitte

ARod our savior. I’m counting down the days til he comes back, puts the team on his centaurian back and carries us to the promised land.

  • Darren

OOh that waitress with the green shirt had a very nice walk up the stairs behind the plate.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

    Cooked.

  • Cy Pettitte

Pettitte’s done. this is just ridiculous, can’t keep rolling him out there to get crushed.

  • forensic

Ugh, I miss last years Andy Pettitte.

  • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

    This is the worst

  • Anderson Silva

He’s just embarrassing himself now. Please retire.

  • dkidd

    batting practice

  • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

    Goddammit Andy. He’s not right.

    • Anderson Silva

      He is old

  • Rolling Doughnut

    Andy’s pitching BP —again.

  • Eddard

This team will never score 3 runs tonight. Andy just can’t pitch in the AL East anymore.

    • Rolling Doughnut

Andy just can’t pitch in the AL East anymore.

  • Pat D

Hey, guys and gals, I just got here. Have I missed anyth……oh. Oh, I see.

Well, my accounting homework looks more entertaining now. Think I’ll go do that instead.

Mostly because looking at Fenway Park for extended periods of time makes me physically ill.

  • Tom T

sell, sell, sell please. This team can’t hang with AL East power houses.

  • Cy Pettitte

can’t put anyone away. these games a seriously painful to watch.

  • forensic

    Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • Roadgeek Adam

Stay positive people. I also point out its only the 2nd inning. Skeptical or not, can’t give up till Out 27.

    • dkidd

as someone who seems interested in uniform numbers, a question: why isn’t 10 a more popular number across the game?

      rizzuto
      lefty grove
      chris chambliss
      chipper jones
      larry bowa

      can’t think of any others

      • forensic

If you like uniform numbers, here’s a little something for you. It gives you a few more names.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L.....ed_numbers

        • Roadgeek Adam

The biggest issue I have is that the Yankees front office/uniform department just is a total headache. Why do we have 4 61s already? 3 22s, 3 39s? Isn’t it really silly?

Mets, as I mentioned, have reused 1 number, 47 between Aaron Laffey and Andrew Brown.

The Mets are so much easier to work with.

There’s a developing pattern with the changes by seasons.

      • Roadgeek Adam

        Tony LaRussa and Jim Leyland.

Not really sure why 10 is such a low count number, however, a lot of 10s are retired:

Sparky Anderson, Rusty Staub and Andre Dawson included.

        • Pat D

Technically, Staub and Dawson don’t have their numbers retired anymore.

          • Roadgeek Adam

Technically, but they meant something then. ;)

Gary Carter and Tim Raines as well.

            • Pat D

Oh, absolutely. I mean, on one hand, the Nationals had no obligation to keep those numbers retired.

On the other, it’s just a firm reminder of how that franchise was destroyed.

              • Roadgeek Adam

If MLB would expand to 36 teams (and I don’t expect they will, although I’d like it), Montreal could get its team back.

                Although I want a 3rd Canadian franchise.

                • Pat D

They can’t afford to go beyond 32 if they ever expand again. And I don’t expect they’ll do that for a while.

                  • Roadgeek Adam

Can’t afford it? Find the right television deal, anything is possible.

                    • Pat D

I think that would stretching it way too thin, really. Football only has 32 teams, even with the rosters being larger. I just am not sure that there are 6 other markets out there that can really support a team.

  • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Justin Timberlake and Jay Z are coming to Fenway… So that’s something.

  • MannyGeee-Proven Starter

Gosh if we make the playoffs my taco stand is giving free taco dinners to my friends here

    • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Not homoerotic at all, but the not-so-subtle racist undertone was a nice touch. You zinged when I thought you’d zag… Well played.

  • forensic

Sterling: “No one can tell you why he’s hitting .367.”

Well, I can tell you part of it. A .414 BABIP helps a bit.

Thankfully, he’s really coming back to reality a bit the last couple weeks or month.

  • Anderson Silva

    I cant stand Caucasian players

    • Anderson Silva

      LOL, what a mature guy

  • Duh Injuries

Pettitte should either accept a phony disabled list visit or retire for the good of the team because he is absolutely unacceptable out there. 3-0 Red Sox at Fenway? That might as well be 7-0 the way the Yanks are hitting.

    Sababthia/Kuroda/Hughes/Nova/Phelps

If Pettitte wants to play baseball and play only for the Yankees next seasonn, he should be given no more than a minor-league contract where he makes $3M if he makes the team and if he stinks after the first ten starts release him, that’s it. I could care less that some other team/s would give him a guaranteed contract – good, go ahead.

    • Pat D

Settle down, at this rate I’m pretty sure he’ll walk away.

    • Jacob the OG

Fuck hughes, put pineda in that spot.

    • Rolling Doughnut

Dude it’s all moot. No way he comes back.

    • forensic

I don’t see him coming back next year after how the last couple months have gone.

  • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

You know, I really want to like Lillibridge… I really do. But that shit ain’t gonna do it here. And also, thanks Nunie for forgetting how to hit. Not like offense is needed here or anything

    • forensic

What did Lillibridge do? Anything beyond just striking out?

      • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Nah, just striking out looking at a knee high fastball. At least give it a go.

        • Winter

Cut him some slack. It’s one at bat.

  • Cy Pettitte

    3 innings, 29 pitches, 0 hits.

  • Tom

Either Victorino is hurt or he was doing his best Robbie Cano impression on that DP.

I thought they would turn it, but it wasn’t even close.

    • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

      yup hurt

    • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Ha… You were right. Hammy, came out of the game.

    • Roadgeek Adam

  • forensic

Waldman comes back from commercial and says “Well, we have one substitution.”

I guess it’s understandable that I immediately expected it to be a Yankee (maybe Almonte) rather than a Red Sox player.

    • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

Makes sense if you weren’t watching. Victorino struggled getting down the line. Turns out he was hurt.

  • forensic

Ouw, Ouw..I know, I know. Mr Pettitte..A Small Medium at Large..

  • Roadgeek Adam

Mike Everitt’s K-zone is a bit out of my preference range.

    • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Yeah, Doubront has been getting that low ball all night. Not. A. Fan.

  • Brennan

Why did they release me? I can at least hit with power.

  • nsalem

My Guess would be Phil Niekro, Satchell Paige and Hoyt Wilhelm. I’m pretty sure about Paige,

    • nsalem

      or maybe Mr. Ryan

  • forensic

        • Pat D

It’s not even remotely spelled correctly.

  • Kramerica Industries

I absolutely hate any of these “if [Team X] goes .500 the rest of the way, then [Team Y] must do at least this good to match that” ideas.

The Red Sox and Yankees play 13 head-to-heads the rest of the way. In a base case scenario this weekend, the Yankees can chop half their deficit off. That is about a 1000 times more important than “rest of the way” projections.

  • nsalem

Wasn’t Lyon part of the Schilling trade?

    • forensic

Yup, along with Casey Fossum and Jorge De La Rosa, among the 3 guys who made or were in the majors.

  • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

Can we have a brawl? Just for entertainment? Bring me Arroyo, Varitek, ARod and Sheff and just have them go at it.

    • Roadgeek Adam

Of that list, about 1 is active in the Majors at this moment, and is in Cinci.

      • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

        Low risk brawl then

PROPOSAL: Everyone grows one of those Giambi mustaches.

  • Roadgeek Adam

Wow, we just got a break there….

    I totally would’ve called that Strike 3.

  • Rolling Doughnut

    Looked like a strike.

  • Pa Poo

Trade Pettitte to the Rangers for Beltre!
    Win-win! Right? Right?

    • Roadgeek Adam

      Like they would accept that.

    • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

That would got squarely against the Yankees’ “no guys who don’t like their heads touched” rules. No dice

  • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Wells is chasing shit up in the eyes all night. Worrisome

  • Anderson Silva

at his helmet, he still swings at it.

  • Rolling Doughnut

    God Wells is terrible.

  • Roadgeek Adam

    Alright, Mike Everitt is inconsistent.

    • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Nope, he’s consistently calling those REALLY bad low pitches strikes. I just don’t think Andy’s found that out yet.

      • Roadgeek Adam

The one with Cano should’ve been Strike 3, and called Ball 4 instead. Great yes, but wrong.

  • SDB

    He’s still throwing a no-hitter.

  • Pa Poo

Yankees and Mets have exactly zero hits tonight.

And have given up 14 runs combined.

    Ouch.

  • SDB

    Right on Poo.

  • Rolling Doughnut

Sharpton is a Racist, and has AIDS now so we hear..

  • Winter

Just got here. I see the Yankees scored their obligatory one run.

    • SDB

But they haven’t gotten their obligatory two hits yet.

    • Roadgeek Adam

      Didn’t use a hit.

Gardner walked, Stole 2nd (while attempted pickoff from 1st), Stole 3rd and scored on Salty’s shit throw.

      • forensic

Doubront threw 32 pitches in the 4th inning and they didn’t even get a hit. How is that even possible???

        • Roadgeek Adam

          It’s baseball.

          Anything is possible.

          • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

            Can’t predict baseball

        • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

You know what they say Suzyn….

    • nsalem

      With 0 obligatory hits.

  • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Pedroia with the gift strike out.

    • Roadgeek Adam

      Napoli.

Pedroia was out 3 of the previous inning.

      • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Couldn’t tell, they all look like pedophile elves with the beards sticking out of those helmets.

        • Roadgeek Adam

Pedroia has one of the cleanest chins on the team. Salty, Napoli and Gomes are just nuts.

  • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

As a guy who wants to retire everyone’s number (and wonders when Overbay is going to switch his because Hideki Matsui day is in 9 days) Interesting to see Sox leaving number 5 open to players.

    • Roadgeek Adam

I don’t know if Matsui’s 55 is going. It’s been used since he left.

I think this is just something of respect.

      • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

Oh I’m perfectly aware. Just interesting that the Sox haven’t kept Nomar’s out of other players’ hands.

        • Roadgeek Adam

Red Sox have specialty retirement criteria.

Has to be in Hall of Fame and played 10 years with the Red Sox.

Nomar went 8 and is not in the HOF, yet.

          • Pat D

And they’ve refused to retire Boggs’ number.

            Gee, I wonder why.

            • Roadgeek Adam

              Heh.

Tampa Bay did, even with just two years.

I question that really. However, Rockies are probably waiting for Todd Helton retire to retire their first.

              • Pat D

It was because he got his 3000th hit with them, more or less. But the Red Sox have these “rules,” they “broke” them to retire Johnny Pesky’s number, but they won’t retire Boggs’ number, probably almost entirely because he went to the Yankees.

I’m sure Colorado will retire Helton’s number. I wonder if/when Miami, Seattle and Washington will retire a number. Well, for Seattle, they’re probably waiting on Edgar, Griffey or Johnson getting into the HOF.

  • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Pettitte needs the k here in the worst possible way.

  • Rolling Doughnut

Gomes got one right down the middle. WTF Andy.

  • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Wow, that popup was a lucky break

  • Kramerica Industries

Gotta say, thinking back to when I was younger, and given that I am a Florida Gators fan, have been my entire life, it is really a wonder to me that I didn’t become a Mets fan when I was younger.

You know, blue and orange. Would’ve been so much more natural. And I’d probably be a lot more miserable.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Wow that was a great throw.

  • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

    A HIT

  • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

    There goes the no hitter

  • Rolling Doughnut

    An XBH. I’m pumped.

    • Winter

Don’t get too excited, it’s a Monster double.

      • forensic

It was a Monster double? Sterling made it sound like it was closer to CF, but not quite a Triangle, double. Maybe the medium wall near straightaway CF.

  • nsalem

will Lillibridge go to the left and advance the runner because he is gritty

    • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

      Nope, he’ll continue striking out.

    • nsalem

meant to the right. no he is not gritty,

  • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

Lillibridge looks nine years old. Much like Edwar Ramirez (this is definitely the first Edwar Ramirez reference in a few years)

    • nsalem

Poor Edwar and his glasses. I always rooted for him. He was good for a couple of weeks.

      • Winter

I remember his first MLB appearance he struck out the side. It was all downhill from there.

  • Rolling Doughnut

2 K for Littledick. Don’t they throw 90 in AAA?

    • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

      yeah but it’s kilometers/hour

  • Mick taylor

Why do the Yankee hitters look like they aretired? They play with no energy they all try to be cool at the plate give me back Brennan boesch

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

      Boesch?
Why not ask for somebody good?
Or at least somebody healthy enough to actually play?

      • Pat D

        Facts don’t penetrate Mick’s bubble.

Must be all the drugs he took with Keith during the Exile on Main St. sessions.

  • Roadgeek Adam

Meanwhile Marlon Byrd just crushed HR No. 16 (RBIs 52-53-54) to cut into an 11 run deficit.

  • nsalem

    Stewart is definitely due.

  • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

CHRIS STEWART RBI THE WORLD IS ENDING CALL THE FEDS

  • Roadgeek Adam

    Chris Stewart, holy shit.

  • Cy Pettitte

    well that was unexpected

  • Kramerica Industries

    Stewart, jeez.

That’s usually a routine flyball in the Bronx.

    • nsalem

Always a routine fly ball in the Bronx.

  • nsalem

That’s it till the 3rd week in August. Don’t expect more.

  • Winter

    Chirs Stewart, doubles machine.

  • Elton Cod

Like I kept saying last year, Chris Stewart is just a better, more reliable hitter than Russell Martin. I’m happy we dumped Russell and kept him.

    • Winter

      Chris Stewart is a career 64 wRC+. Martin’s at 103 wRC+. Even last year, Martin led Stewart 96 wRC+ to 66 wRC+.

You’re welcome to keep saying that, you’ll just keep being wrong.

  • SDB

Suzyn just called Stewart a great clutch hitter, and is now comparing him to Jose Molina.

    I’m choking as I type.

    • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Sure, Molina wasn’t a slugger by any means.., but um WUT? Stewart isn’t Mike Piazza or anything.

  • Eddard

Drive in Stewie here and they’ll have a chance. Get the game to Kelley-Drob-Mo with at least a tie.

  • Roadgeek Adam

I really need a Man tonight.

    • Roadgeek Adam

      Uh what now?

      I’m straight thank you.

  • Rolling Doughnut

The number 9 guy knocks one in. Which of the 7 number nines you ask? Why Chris f*n Stewart that’s which one.

  • Elton Cod

Fuck that umpire. I hope he dies.

  • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

God Gardner control yourself. You can’t do that. No discipline.

  • Roadgeek Adam

    Brett Gardner gets himself ejected.

    Had to happen eventually.

Next time Gardner should’ve just tackled Everitt.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

    Not very smart, Gardy.

  • Kramerica Industries

    Fucking asshole.

  • Rolling Doughnut

    Flexible zone tonight huh.

    • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

      Consistently. Bad. Umpiring.

That was not a strike but Gardy should not have done that. Now they’ve got nobody.

  • Rolling Doughnut

  • DERP

Greg Bird has three home runs through five innings for Charleston.

  • Pasta

Quickiest hook i have ever seen. Wtf girardi needs to get tossed too.

    • Winter

Gardner definitely deserved it. Did you see how he threw his helmet? Throwing equipment at all is a big no-no, and that was a very emphatic throw.

It was an awful call, but the ejection’s Gardner’s fault.

  • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

I want to see K-Zone on that pitch for my irrational nostalgic love for K-Zone

  • Roadgeek Adam

I would sense we have a spam troll here.

  • Kramerica Industries

The US needs to stay out of other peoples nations and stop being war mongers around the world., I dont want nice foreigners hating me.

  • SDB

Gardy needs to learn from Paul O’Neill and just take it out on the water cooler.

  • Kramerica Industries

There has been this one moron at Fenway Park the past few years, where after every strikeout, they put up these two odd-something round posters or something.

I mean, does anyone even know what the fuck those things mean?

  • nsalem

Cruz will get the winning hit tonight.

    • Roadgeek Adam

Given what happened when Paul Emmel (who is at 2nd base) threw out Gardner in 2010, Colin Curtis hit a 3 run Home Run. Who knows. ;)

      • nsalem

Afternoon game against the Angels in July.

    Great almonte hurt too

  • DERP

    kRAMERICA, Like your style, dude.

Because, well, if it’s a post that sounds completely out of character, then it probably is.

  • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

Tell me Waldman just mentioned PFP

  • Cy Pettitte

they didn’t even mention Almonte coming out of the game…

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

    Almonte out as well?

  • Winter

Pettitte fielding his position decently, for a change.

  • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

    Almonte is out?

Almonte needs to lose a few pounds and get angry, then he would be a Leaner, Meaner, Beaner for us.

      Some one using my name
Must be a dead swax fan

  • Winter

    What happened to Zoilo?

    • Roadgeek Adam

You would assume he hurt himself. There were questions earlier.

Thank you, fake-kramerica. I’ll take it as a complement.

  • Kramerica Industries

So glad that “patience” thingy has suddenly disappeared again this inning.

  • Winter

    Okay.

  • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Nice to see Michael Kay paying close attention to the game.

  • Roadgeek Adam

Wait, Alberto Gonzalez is in LF, batting 1st? I’m lost.

    • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

No… Lillibridge to RF, Ichiro to CF, Cruz to 3B, right?

      • Roadgeek Adam

        A-Gon replaced Almonte.

My question is how Alberto Gonzalez is in the 1st.

        • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

          Cruz in for Almonte.
          Gonzalez in for Gardner.

        • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

          Sorry, missed that part. Thanks

  • Tyrone Sharpton

LOL at kay/the crew having no clue about almonte being out

  • Kramerica Industries

There is this really Cool dude in Boston that holds up these nice signs whenever one of the Sox great pitchers gets a strikeout

  • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Had to let my iPad charge while I gave my kid a bath. Did I say anything homoerotic or racist while I was away?

  • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

Frankly I would take 6IP 3 ER 92 pitches from AEP any other day.

  • Anderson Silva

that was not amazing, that was lucky

    • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Yeah, lucky that the ball died in the grass and that Loverbay is PAINFULLY slow.

  • BigBlueAL

This has to be a record for most utility infielders playing at the same time on 1 team.

  • Anderson Silva

so why did Gardner get tossed?

    • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Got 2 piss poor strike calls, one for strike three, and he got pissed and slammed his helmet on the ground.

    • Winter

There was a terrible strike three call and he chucked his helmet.

  • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

    Is this Daisuke? Hideki Okajima?

  • Mick taylor

So idiot cashman cuts boesch who we could use if almonte is disabled . I am sick of Michael Kay always talking up how great Ted Williams was and nary a mention of DiMaggio people who actually saw them play said Joe was the greater player . Hey Kay , how about mentioning Joe wasabetterhitter than Ted in ballparks other than Fenway and Yankee stadium.how about 9 championships to zero mikey

    • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Newsflash. Boesch is injured. He’s been out since early June.

    • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

You realize that Boesch is hurt and not particularly close to coming back. Settle down Francis.

    • Roadgeek Adam

I assume, if the Yankees put Almonte on the DL, they’ll recall Neal.

Unless they want to try with Adonis Garcia. (I’d love Ronnier myself, but let him get in a groove again.)

      • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

I’d guess either Neal or Adams. Or somebody not in the org.

        • Roadgeek Adam

          I don’t expect an infielder.

Neal is the top choice. Unless they want to chance with Melky Mesa (Doubtful.)

          • Need Pitching & Hitting (but mostly hitting)

Probably not Adams, especially with ARod due back soon. But I could see a possibility of going with Adams @ 3B for a while with Lillibridge as the 4th OF.

      • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

I could see them bringing Neal back up for roster reasons. Although Ronnier (albeit a Ronnier that hasn’t spent the past month on the DL) would be the better choice.

      • Pasta

Garcia or melky gets a shot. Dickerson got dfaed could be a quick bandaid.

    • WhittakerWalt

WTF do you care what people said about baseball players from 70 years ago? Also, championships don’t tell you how good a player is. Also also, Ted Williams was probably the best hitter of all time. 190 career OPS+ compared to DiMaggio’s 155.

  • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Wow. Tazawa got squeezed in at least 2 of those pitches to Lillibridge.

  • Winter

So Brent still has yet to put the ball in play.

  • Anderson Silva

    Nunez is pathetic

  • Pasta

Im back did i miss anything or say anything

    • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

No, but fake Kramerica wants some pics

    • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Oh, and the whole team has either been injured or tossed over the past 2 innings

  • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

It blows my mind that the hockey schedule is out already. Didn’t they just end like 2 weeks ago?

    • Roadgeek Adam

Beningo and Roberts wants basketball season to start already.

    • momomo

we don’t care. we like baseball.

      • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

That’s not fair or true. Some people here like tacos, others like bathtub semen, some like quiche, others like scantily dressed ‘negroids’…

And many posters here like hockey. I can take it or leave it to be honest, it’s just weird that, in comparison to baseball if it helps you at all, they seem to whip that schedule out quick. ESPECIALLY considering that many hockey teams need to balance schedules with basketball teams that share a stadium.

  • Pasta

And by the way i am wearing underwear. It was a gift from Arod.

  • Pasta

    • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Why, I doubt Ichiro or Swisher get to that either. Wells sure as hell doesn’t.

      • ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa

Just pent up anger. After that game in 2011 he should get to everything. I think Youk has him in on the whole “Embedded Red/White Sox” thing

        • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

I try to forget that game.

  • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

    Fucking Iglecias. Goddammit.

  • Wow

This team truly is awful. I really hope they do sell at the deadline so that we can be put out of our misery. There’s no way they have the talent to trade their way to contention by the end of the month. They just need to focus on rebuilding for next year and filll in the holes using the one thing they can actually do well: using cash. Otherwise, they will be fooling themselves if they think they are one healthy A-Rod and Jeter from contending.

  • Pasta

Just bean elsbury logan you piece of crap.

  • Pasta

Umps have on their red sox tonight.

  • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Tough non strike call from Everett there.

  • Winter

In all honesty that pitch probably wasn’t a strike. But, from what I can tell, the umpires have been crazy inconsistent today.

    • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

HORRIBLY inconsistent. He’s been shaky all night

  • Pasta

    Arod 2 – 4 tonight
Must be sucking on those steroid losenges.

    The rest of us

  • Anderson Silva

so they had one last chance and Wells blew it.. so fucking predictable. At least we only have him for one more year. CASHMAN IS GOD!

    • WhittakerWalt

No one thinks he’s God, but he has presided over 6 WS teams and 4 World Champions. In other words, more than any other GM in baseball has done. Then the team was hit by approximately 8 million injuries AND the front office pretended they didn’t like spending money anymore. What’s a GM to do?

      • Pa Poo

Response to each sentence: $200 million

        • WhittakerWalt

Half of which is on the DL.

  • Pasta

I feel like i am watching the yankees vs duck dynasty.

  • nsalem

Got some big bats coming up this inning. I’m very confident.

  • Joe

Yank will get swept in my opinion. Then will have an offseason picking up other teams trash like Ben Francisco.

  • MannyGeee – Proven Starter

Bright side, Lillibridge put a ball in play.

  • nsalem

    A well spent 3 hours.

  • Anderson Silva

god forbid Cashman acquires or develops a good player. What a fucking joke of a GM.

    • WhittakerWalt

      Suggestions?

      • Pa Poo

Not giving terrible contracts to Teix, CC, Ichiro, Wells, Youk.
        A-Rod isn’t his fault.

        • WhittakerWalt

The Tex contract only looks bad in hindsight. At the time it was considered a massive coup. Same with CC. We didn’t sign Wells to anything. That was a trade. Youk was a mad signing, but options were very limited at the time and it’s only for one year. What would you have done? It’s not enough to just say Cashman did a bad job, you have to say what you would have done instead.

  • Kramerica Industries

      Fucking asshole.

  • forensic

Well, that sucked. Start the second half the same way as the first half, losing to the Red Sox while only scoring two runs.

  • Tim Powers

Poor Robby Cano. hits a double and following him. Ice Cold Wells, and freaking Cruz.

  • David N

This helpless feeling that sets in as soon as the other team has a two-run lead is getting really old.

  • Pasta

Silva, Meet me at this address tonight 227 E 56 St, (212)753-2222

  • momomo

Definitely in need of some kind of rebuilding. It’s been all Cano and pitching for two years now:
    http://www.fangraphs.com/leade.....;players=0
The only issue now is that instead of a slightly above average supporting cast, we have a team of triple A fringe prospects and 2006 all stars who have nothing left in the tank. But where to begin with no real tradeable assets? Nice job setting us up for the future Brian. Old and regressing to the middle is never the way to go. Guess that’s what happens when your team carries the majority of the least appealing contracts in the league.

  • nOnOnO

  • forensic

Gotta consider going back to my Red Sox bandwagon, as I grew up in Welsley.

  • BigBlueAL

This team is in real danger of being out of the playoff chase by the end of this month. They will need an unbelievable final 2 months to make the playoffs.

  • Jonah Falcon

Can’t see the Yanks selling OR buying at the deadline. They have NO ASSETS to sell save Cano. They have no one in the minors.

  • Jacob the OG

    ok time to sell

  • WhittakerWalt

It’s pretty simple: Andy gives up 4 runs every time he pitches. Our offense is almost completely incapable of scoring 5 runs. Ergo, every Andy start is a loss. And there’s really nothing to be done about it. It’s not like he’s getting DFAed.

Oh stats mean more than championships? . Stats from70 years ago mean nothing? Baseball is all about stats. That is why people are so upset about steroids destroying the legacy of the game . Joe was a better hitter than Williams if you take Yankee stadium out of the numbers. Had Ted played in Yankee stadium as a right handed hitter like Joe his stats would be worse than joe
