Game 113: End of the road (trip)

(Jonathan Daniel/Getty)

(Jonathan Daniel/Getty)

This has felt like a really long road trip, hasn’t it? Yeah it’s only eight games, but there were also three off-days mixed in as well. Going out on the road for eleven days is an eternity for an East Coast team. Factor in the different time zones and I’m definitely ready for the Yankees to come back to the Bronx. A few games back home well be a welcome sight no matter how poorly they’ve played. Here’s the starting lineup that will face (yet another lefty) Hector Santiago:

  1. CF Brett Gardner
  2. LF Alfonso Soriano
  3. 3B Alex Rodriguez
  4. 2B Robinson Cano
  5. DH Vernon Wells
  6. RF Curtis Granderson
  7. SS Eduardo Nunez
  8. 1B Lyle Overbay
  9. C Austin Romine

And on the mound is CC Sabathia, who currently ranks 81st out of 91 qualified pitchers with a 4.78 ERA. They need to figure out what’s wrong him and soon. Not necessarily for this year, that ship has pretty much sailed, but for next year and beyond. This ain’t good.

It was raining rather hard in Chicago this afternoon, but it’s all cleared up and they aren’t expected to have any trouble getting the game in. First pitch is scheduled for 8:10pm ET and can be seen on YES. Enjoy.

  4. AllyinCt says:

I put the over/under on CC for the first inning at seven runs.

  5. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

Phil Hughes is the Cody Eppley of the Yankees

  6. Stratman9652 says:

That almost looks like a… legitimate lineup. Typically I would feel pretty good about that lineup behind CC. The way this year has gone getting swept by a team fresh off a 10 game losing streak wouldn’t be remotely surprising.

  7. ThatstheMelkyMesaWaysa says:

CC Sabathia is worse than the lovechild of Manny Delcarmen and Esteban Loaiza

    • Darren says:

Hey, Esteban Loaiza was one of the only guys to come through in the playoff series that shall not be spoken of.

  8. forensic says:

And on the mound is CC Sabathia, who currently ranks 81st out of 91 qualified pitchers with a 4.78 ERA

Looks to me like he’s 82nd, but the real point and problem is that they also have the guys who are 78th and 84th on that list.

You just can’t win games with three starters pitching like that.

  9. Oy says:

What’s the logic behind hitting Cano 4th? Let’s give him less at bats?

    • forensic says:

Well, he is a much worse hitter vs. lefties than righties.

    • Gonzalo Hiram says:

What’s the problem with that, he has done nothing spectacular this year, Cano always has been a player of moments, he doesn’t have consistency he is always on a slump or destroying the ball.

Also it’s a game against a lefty and Cano kind of sucks lately against lefties

  10. forensic says:

Two straight starts for Romine??? Did someone kidnap Girardi?

  20. Wheels says:

No doubt about that one Sori.

  21. Shutdown inning? Please?

  22. Elton Cod says:

    Lyle Overbay batting 8th? Ridiculous.

Mr. Overbay has been our clean-up hitter most of the year.

It is a disrespect to both Mr. Overbay and to the team to demote him to the 8th spot.

It is a disrespect to the fans, as well, who rooted for the Yankees and Mr. Overbay when Mr. Overbay batted 4th. Those fans respected Mr. Overbay for delivering above and beyond expectations – originally he was just a last-minute short-term fill in for Mr. Teixeira.

Pretty soon Mr. Overbay can join the ranks of disgruntled former overperforming Yankee utilitymen who covered up for Mr. Cashman and Messrs Steinbrenners’ failures – like Mr. Ibanez, Mr. Jones, and Mr. Chavez.

    • trr says:

Elton, do you also write for the NY Times?

    • OldYanksFan says:

Mister Overbay is Mister Overperforming with a Mister OBP of .300 and a Mister WAR of 0.4.

      Mister Overbay has a Mister Triple-slash against LHP of: .202 .245 .309 .554
      (Mister Mendoza says Hello).

Mister Overbay was our cleanup hitter before Mister Soriano, Mister Granderson and Mister Rodriguez joined the team.

But by all means, bat Mister Overbay CleanUp.

  25. Karl Krawfid says:

    CC completely changed his delivery.

  26. Tom says:

Dan Plesac on MLB Network on the Nationals struggles this year and looking back at their decision to shutdown Strasburg last year:

“Were they putting the horse before the cart?”

    • dkidd says:

it’s like the dog is wagging the tail over there!

    • Lukaszek says:

You could definitely say that. Part of the reason they did so well was because they got career years from Adam LaRoche, Gio Gonzalez, and Ian Desmond. The stars lined up for them for the first time since the wasted 1994 season. You remove those three guys from the Nats, and they most certainly wouldn’t have won all those games last year.

In order to have success again, they would’ve needed another 33 homerun season from LaRoche, a 20/20 season from Desmond, and 21 more wins from Gonzalez. They couldn’t have possibly expected that to happen again, could they? IMO, when you haven’t been in the playoffs for thirty years you cannot pick and choose which season you want to compete in.

  27. BigBlueAL says:

Hawk Harrelson is basically blaming CC’s struggles this season on his weight loss.

  28. Elton Cod says:

Curtis strike outs, how I’ve missed you.

  29. forensic says:

Got the job done, but that sure was an interesting route by Gardner.

  30. fat jeter says:

Bah! damn this AM antenna! I am strategically placing it all over my room in an attempt to catch at least a portion of this game. clear as a bell once the third out is made, garbage static at the top and bottom of every inning.

  31. dkidd says:

danny salazar just struck out miguel cabrera with a 100 mph fastball

  32. Alkaline says:

    How’s CC looking?

  33. fat jeter says:

Ooh, is he messing with his pants after every pitch? Someone brought that up a few days ago and I gotta know!

  34. Anderson Silva says:

We can always count on Cano to have a shitty AB with men on base

  35. BigBlueAL says:

Never seen Cano step out so much. Completely bailed out on a couple of swings tonight including that popup.

  36. Page Falkenberg says:

Robinson Cano? More like Robinson CANNOT, amirite?

  37. WhittakerWalt says:

Would John Flaherty even be able to speak if he eliminated the phrase “a little bit” from his repertoire?

Note: I’m fine with him not being able to speak.

  38. fat jeter says:

alex is 3-8 since coming back and there is speculation on MLB network that he’s still using. i am not an alex guy, no one will ever confuse me as an alex guy, but wtf

    • WhittakerWalt says:

It’s not like those 3 are homers.

      • WhittakerWalt says:

I mean, I’m pretty fed up with his PED bullshit too, but people talk about him like he wouldn’t even have made the big leagues without PEDs.

        • I’ve noticed the same thing, but the fact that people are acting like that is rather disgusting.

Bobby Ojeda of SNY absolutely ripped into everyone on the list, including saying its not over, just all their progress becomes .000 / .000 / .000 again.

        • Elton Cod says:

The “PED = HOMERZ” mentality in general is nonsense.

PEDs make you able to train more efficiently – which can make you able to hit balls farther.

But in order to hit balls farther you first must be able to hit balls. And not just foul tips…you need to be able to get the barrel on the ball for your strength/bat speed to matter at all.

Being able to hit 90+ MPH baseballs with a stupid wooden bat is really an incredible achievement. Being able to hit them well is even more incredible.

PEDs have nothing to do with that achievement and don’t tarnish it.

(Okay, bat speed does help a little with ability to make contact…but for bat speed to matter you still have to be able to identify pitch and location and stuff, which is amazingly hard. Just watch Cano, PEDs couldn’t fix his problems with identifying type and location.)

          • fat jeter says:

if they helped you hit the ball and i knew about them during little league, i would have juiced my ass off. I was so bad at little league I got my fielding percentage at the end of the year when everyone else got their batting average. consistently won the “most walks” award though.

      • fat jeter says:

or even extra base hits. he put in his rehab work and is looking pretty good out there. no need to speculate. i think i’m coming around to the just let the guy play until the process plays itself out camp

  39. Wheels says:

  40. I know Konerko is a 1st baseman, but would running Dunn at 1B better than Konerko given Konerko is slower this year?

  41. nsalem says:

Quite a circuitous route by Mr. Rios.

  42. Elton Cod says:

The White Sox announcers are calling Konerko ‘Paulie’. I am bothered by this. There is only one Paulie – Paul O’Neill. Paulie O’Neill is ten times the Paulie in terms of ability and Paulie-ness.

    • Hawk calls Konerko that all the time. I had a Twins fan who hates John Sterling call Gardner “Gardy” because its Ron Gardenhire nickname. I don’t think status determines nickname choices.

      • Elton Cod says:

I have no doubt there are tons of overlapping announcer nicknames. I just a) Hate Hawk, even though/especially because I live in Chicago these days and b) Love Paulie. I also enjoy being an entitled Yankee fan – ‘Gardy’ is fine because Gardner is a Yankee and so his nickname supersedes the nickname of some two-bit Twins manager; ‘Paulie’ is not fine because Konerko is just some two-bit White Sock who maybe won one World Series in the last century; Paulie O’Neill is a Yankee, dammit, and a multi-champion.

        • your mom says:

Hawk is the absolute worst. If he was the Yankees announcer, I’d root for another team. Everytime he says “He gone” I want to grab a knife and stab him in the face.

          • Imagine for the last two home runs…

You can put it on the booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooardd.

Unshockingly, Hawk was rated the most homer announcer in either sports or baseball (I forget).

(John and Suzyn both made that list separately.)

          • your mom says:

That came off a little over the top, my bad. Hawk sucks though.

  43. Wheels says:

    3 run lead, it’s been a while.

  44. lightSABR says:

And two of Sabathia’s third-inning outs come from balls hit hard but right at defenders.

You know, I’ve thought he was looking better tonight, but better lucky than good, right?

  45. Been waiting all year to say this.

Also, David Justice for the question.

    • lightSABR says:

It would be awfully nice if he could step up and be an average major league shortstop. I’ve always thought he had it in him, if he could just get over the defensive issues.

  46. BigBlueAL says:

    Holy Crap.

  47. Wheels says:

  48. forensic says:

    Nunez likes Santiago apparently.

  49. Elton Cod says:

In other news, it’s good to have a DH again. Pitchers having to hit is a stupid crock of shit. It would be like requiring coaches to shoot free throws in the NBA.

  50. Tom says:

Salazar K’s Miguel Cabrera 3 times, and makes him look foolish. He was only the 3rd pitcher to strike Cabrera out 3 times in a game (with the Tigers)

4th AB? 2 run go ahead HR to straight away center.

    • Lukaszek says:

I hate Detroit, but Cabrera is a very impressive hitter. If he played for any other team (aside from the Red Sox) I’d probably root for him

  51. forensic says:

    Obligatory homer.

  52. nycsportzfan says:

Nunez has homered in Chicago before, i believe?

  53. your mom says:

CC seems really prone to giving up home runs to the weaklings at the bottom of the order.

  54. Wheels says:

Gardy can put the game out of reach here.

  55. Cuso says:

Hawk: “That Yan Gomes reminds me an awful lot of Thurman Munson. Except he throws a lot better than Thurman ever did.”

Just gratuitous shots for no reason other than to do it, huh Hawk?

  56. Tom says:

    When did Tony LaRussa un-retire?

  57. Gonzalo Hiram says:

So, How many games has it been for Cano without an extra base.

I really hope Yankees won’t give him more than 7years/130M. He is so overrated

    • vicki says:

he hit a double at texas on the 25th. he’s in a slump, but he’s still got a 130 wrc+ on the season.

      • Anderson Silva says:

I’d venture to guess that we don’t need to pay a player 20M/season to get a 130 wrc+. Most teams don’t anyways.

  58. Anderson Silva says:

Who could have seem that coming? Cano with yet another awful AB

  59. Gonzalo Hiram says:

    Nicely done Cano, double play

  60. Lukaszek says:

Ugh why you do this Cano?

  61. forensic says:

Even with all the runners left on, this 4-1 lead feels like 10-1 with how they’ve been scoring.

    • forensic says:

Maybe I should’ve said 4 runs feels like 10 runs, because now it doesn’t feel like 10-1 anymore. Dangerous spot now.

  62. Kramerica Industries says:

Not taking long to get extremely uncomfortable again.

  63. Cy Pettitte says:

get him out of this game now.

  64. BigBlueAL says:

I know that wasnt a shift but it really does seem like opposing teams constantly hit grounballs to wide open holes against the Yankee infield.

  65. Anderson Silva says:

this has to be his last batter, right? Can’t let CC blow this game

  66. forensic says:

    Um, this is not good.

  67. BigBlueAL says:

Maybe the Yankees shouldnt have left so many runners on base.

  68. nycsportzfan says:

Why is he still in the fucking game! I swear to god if Giardi lets CC blow this fucking game! Dude hasent earned th right to be in after one guy reaches in the 7th, let alone 2. FUck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  69. forensic says:

All those hard hit balls at fielders and long fly balls are catching up to CC now.

  70. Anderson Silva says:

wow, excellent job not having a reliever ready

  71. your mom says:

And here’s where the shit hits the fan.

  72. forensic says:

    Seriously, Konerko is SOOOOO slow.

  73. Wheels says:

It couldn’t just be an easy night, could it?

  74. nycsportzfan says:

As awesome as this pens been, giardi seriously didn’t have anyone ready to come out if anyone got on in the 7th? I just can’t get over a guys getting paid to manage this game can’t make one of the easiest moves ever and/or be prepared for it.

    • BigBlueAL says:

CC has been cruising with a very low pitch count. Kelley is unavailable tonight so Im pretty sure Girardi at the least wants CC to get thru 7 so setup Drob and Mo.

      • nycsportzfan says:

No way. CC’s been wretched for just about the entire season and you can’t get swept by the worst offense in baseball. The entire pen has been insane, not just Mo and Drob, but Claiborne, Kelly, Logan, have all been aces. Warrens been decent. In hindsight, he got out with the lead but only up a run. He only had 1k, so it tells you guys are putting the ball in play, so that enchances the risk of keeping em in there in my opinion. I didn’t like the decison at all, personally.

        • Darren says:

I think Girardi is banking on CC turning back into good CC. And if that’s gonna happen, Girardi needs to show confidence in him.

  75. Rolling Doughnut says:

Nice recovery by CC. I thought the wheels were about to come off.

    • nycsportzfan says:

Shoulden’t even been alowed to give up those 2runs in the 7th. Get em out of there on a positive note. Now hes given up 3 over 7 against the leagues worst offense. Solid but not special really.

  76. BigBlueAL says:

Yankees havent won a game where Mo didnt get a save or the win since July 11.

  77. Tom says:

I know CC has a low pitch count, but that’s his last inning right?

  78. nycsportzfan says:

One thing I will say is to the people who were dissing the soriano trade just last night, how do you feel today? Thats his 2nd homer with the yanks and all ready the 2nd game he clearly put the soriano stamp on the game. Hes been worth Corey Black all day long so far.

  79. forensic says:

    Very nice night for Nunez.

Even showed bunt on the pickoff throw.

  80. Kramerica Industries says:

So many rally crippling double plays right now. Amazing.

  81. forensic says:

It’d be a fine move against a lefty, but Overbay probably doesn’t even really know how to bunt.

  82. Anderson Silva says:

what is Girardi trying to accomplish by continuing to let Overbay hit against lefties? What a stubborn son of a bitch

  83. Erik says:

I hope they lose just for that.

  84. forensic says:

These guys are good at finding new ways to kill rallies.

  85. nycsportzfan says:

There goes a promising inning. A ton of pressure on DROB and Mo tonight.

  86. nycsportzfan says:

I’m just glad joes got Nunez and Romine in there. They lengthen the lineup as much as you could hope with whats available. Much better then Stewart and Nix , or Lillibridge or combo of them.

  87. Lukaszek says:

The Yankees haven’t won a game by more than 3 runs since July 11

I mean I know we’re bad, but you woulda at least think that they had one 6-2 or maybe a 5-0 win during a month’s span. But nope

  88. Kramerica Industries says:

I’m really questioning C.C. still being out there.

    I know, I know, pitch count. I don’t care.

  89. nycsportzfan says:

Giardi is hell bent on getting CC something negative to hold his head on tonight. Get em out of there joe! Jesus!

  90. Rolling Doughnut says:

CC’s gone after the lefty right?

  91. forensic says:

Gillaspie is terrible against lefties, but I still don’t like tempting fate here and leaving CC in.

  92. nycsportzfan says:

Ok, finally its DROB. Great game by CC. About freaking time!!! We needed that and need that the rest of the way from the 20plus mill a season pitcher.

  93. forensic says:

Fantastic performance, Flaherty? It’s certainly better than he had been doing, but it’s still against a terrible offense, only 1 K, and lots of hard hit balls. Still not feeling great about him.

  94. Tom says:

The first batter is just another example of Girardi and his cavemen understanding of platooning.

While CC got Gillapsie out, he’s bringing in a pitcher now who gets both lefties and righties out. In fact Robertson is actually BETTER against lefties (.410 OPS this year, .590 the previous 3 years). That’s actually better than the lefty Girardi left in.

But Girardi’s grasp of platooning is lefty hitter = lefty pitcher. It worked here, but it was still dumb.

    • forensic says:

While I also wouldn’t have left CC in, you have to consider Gillaspie’s .733 OPS vs. righties and .337 OPS vs. lefties too. It’s not only about the pitcher’s numbers.

  95. forensic says:

Kind of a gift strike there.

  96. Kramerica Industries says:

DRob hasn’t been sharp at all.

  97. nycsportzfan says:

Wow, that go pretty intresting. Feeww! DROB made that very interesting.

Dellin Betances threw 2.1inn of scoreless ball yet again tonight. Hes pitched better then stellar outta the pen and mite get shot at closers job next yr.

  98. Isaac says:

ok so this is really random, but I just wanted other opinions. What do you think about bidding for Masahiro Tanaka from Japan. He’s only 24, from what i’ve heard he has decent stuff, and most importantly his command is on point. Just look at his stats, they’re about equal to Darvish’s Japan stats (minus the strikeouts). He’s the number one Japanese prospect that could come over, but the price won’t be as much as Darvish’s. thoughts?

  99. The Real Greg says:

I thought sending Sabathia back out was a bit shaky but it worked so to the general public (majority) and the media it was a good move.

This team will not divebomb out of relevancy. It will simply wither away and die.

    • nycsportzfan says:

Alot of us would of taken him out as soon as a guy reached in the 7th though, and he ended up giving up 2runs in that inning. So really did Joe do the right job? I guess if we WIN it won’t matter.

  100. Anderson Silva says:

free baserunner, there’s no way Cano would put a good AB there

  101. Tom says:

Over/under on 2 pitches before the pop up

    /hoping for the reverse jinx!

  102. Lukaszek says:

I have a strange feeling that this is gonna be one of those days when Mo blows a save

  103. Wheels says:

    oh my fucking god.

  104. forensic says:

    Damn you Lukaszek!!!

    I blame you!

  105. Kramerica Industries says:

    Are you fucking kidding me?

  106. Anderson Silva says:

what a terrible pitch called, 2 pitches outside, why go a third time? fuck this team

  107. BigBlueAL says:

This season cant get any fucking worse.

  108. Really says:

Bum, should have retired a year ago, D-Rob is just better.

  109. Cy Pettitte says:

    give me a fucking break

  110. forensic says:

Guess that’s what they get for leaving all those men on base and in scoring position.

    • The Real Greg says:

Nope. 4-0 lead in the seventh inning alleviates the offense of blame.

      • forensic says:

It doesn’t alleviate it, though it does lessen it. They should’ve had this game blown out by now, but they failed in chance after chance to add on further.

        • The Real Greg says:

But they shouldn’t have needed if the pitchers do their job.

          • WhittakerWalt says:

Pitching has certainly crapped the bed, but our offense had tons of chances to add on. They did not.

            • The Real Greg says:

If it was 2-0 I’d buy your argument. It was 4-0. That’s a lot.

              • Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

No, it’s not. It’s less than a run higher than their average runs per game. They’re the second worst offense in the league.

              • WhittakerWalt says:

It’s a lot for this team, yes. But still. Wasted chances. And frankly, it’s not enough for diminished CC to make stand up. Also, Mo is shaky when the lead is only one run.

                • Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

I don’t think this is true, but maybe I’m wrong. Any stats to back this up?

  111. Mandy Stankiewiecz says:

    C’mon mo…

  112. Karl Krawfid says:

    This season sucks.

  113. Rolling Doughnut says:

    Well, fuck.

  114. WhittakerWalt says:

Well, it’s not like we’re scoring any more runs tonight. Just a matter of time.

  115. nycsportzfan says:

I still can’t believe MO freaking went back to the same spot after going up 0-2 on Dunn. Harold Reynolds litteraly was saying all that Dunn had to do if he went back there was take it to the shift. Didn’t Mo know the shift was on? Why even give em that chanchat was some bad pitching by a awesome pitcher there. And it probably cost us the freaking game.

  116. Darren says:

Um, we can still win, ya crybabies!

    Best Yankee extra inning wins:

    1. 2003 Game 7 ALCS
    2. 1995 Game 2 ALDS

    10. Giambi grand slam in the rain.

  117. Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

This season is Hell. I’m going to stop watching the games. I’ll follow on here, and if they start winning again maybe I’ll tune in.

This just isn’t fun anymore. Not at all. This game fucking sucks.

    • True Pinstriped Blue says:

Oh so if they start winning again you’re going to start watching again. LMAO. Way to stick through the tough times. Go to bed.

      • Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

Yep. Who cares? I don’t get why people are so bothered by this. It’s not your business.

And you don’t get to tell me what to do behind a damn computer screen, thanks.

        • True Pinstriped Blue says:

You’re the one crying around like a little bitch. Save it.

          • Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

            Um, no.

See how that works? When you tell me things, I don’t actually have to do them.

I didn’t bother you, dude. I don’t really care about you. Just don’t act like a dick, thanks.

            • True Pinstriped Blue says:

              Um, Yeah.

              • Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

…This response makes absolutely no sense. So, I guess this travesty of a “conversation” is over.

                • True Pinstriped Blue says:

Conversation might be over, but you’re still a front running bitch. So there is still that.

                  • Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

Dude, what is your problem with me? I didn’t say a fucking thing to you. Just leave me alone.

If this isn’t banning material, I don’t know what is.

  118. WhittakerWalt says:

Way too good of a pitch on 0-2.

  119. The Real Greg says:

Michael Kay is absolutely wrong. You have a 4-0 lead in the seventh inning, you need to get the job done.

  120. nycsportzfan says:

2fucking outs and no one on. Unbelievable! And again, if JOE was smart, he’d of taken CC out as soon as someone reached in the 7th, and we’d probably have this game WON. Freaking idiot!

  121. stuart a says:

    really a rough season.

things have really not looked this dismal in about 19 years….

mo got to much of the plate and threw 3 pitched all on the outside, old MO would have tried to tie him up inside.

the offense on this team is 2nd worse in baseball nothing else to say…

  122. Anderson Silva says:

there’s no way they score again in this game

  123. stuart a says:

this bunch of crap will not score for the yanks. 4 runs were burning bush miraculous…

overbay stinks the guy has a 300 obp and hitting 250 and we think he has been a real stud…

  124. nycsportzfan says:

Can any of these idiots hit the fucking ball? I freaking can’t stand this freaking pathetic clown squad! Fucking Overbays a loser! Get the fuck outta here you scum!

  125. The Real Greg says:

We should just take Cashman and the Steinbrenners by the hair and rub their noses against the screen saying “Look at what you have created”

  126. BigBlueAL says:

Maybe they should have another team meeting….

  127. Cy Pettitte says:

It’s not a matter of if they lose, it’s just when. They’re not scoring again tonight.

  128. Anderson Silva says:

Overbay is 0-5 with 3 Ks and a DP, somehow still employed by the Yankees.

  129. ExitCashman says:

This team is so flawed that, in spite of my pre-season 82-85 win 4th place finish prediction, we actually could finish last.

I’d move Hughes to the pen and Warren to the rotation and absolutely bench Wells and Cano unless they bust their asses on every single play.

  130. forensic says:

Mo going two innings? Girardi has officially reached desperation status (not that I can blame him at this point).

  131. Cy Pettitte says:

Girardi is determined to ruin all the relievers. First Kelley for 49 pitches, now Mo for 2 innings

    • Nuke Guy (Knoxvillain) says:

I think he knows what he’s doing. Rivera can pitch two innings. It’s not like he’s seeking a 3 year deal after the season or something.

  132. jtb10182 says:

You are garbage Rivera like the rest of your team. Absolutely no leadership anywhere in this organization. If you cant get 3 outs, really 1 out when we need it then you are useless.

    • ExitCashman says:

Please go away. Mo is the closest thing baseball has to perfection and you complain about an opposite field hit?
Here’s a ticket to Toledo to see Valverde gyrate.

    • Nuke Guy (Knoxvillain) says:

I agree 100%. Rivera is so overrated, especially in the postseason. There are plenty of other closers out there that have played for almost 20 years and haven’t even blown a single save that the Yankees could trade for!

  133. BigBlueAL says:

Mo for a 2nd inning. Damn.

  134. nycsportzfan says:

This is flat out a loser teams mentality. They only know how to suck. It starts effecting everyone and you see dumb ass shit from everyone, including stars like MO. I just can’t get over he’d go to the same spot 3times in a row! The only way Dunn hits him there is if he pitches it outside and makes him go the other way and he sneaks one in on left side. of course AROD the loser coulde’t make a big play , because hes a piece of crap.

    • OldYanksFan says:

      FINALLY: The Winning Formula!
Trade Garbage Mo, bench Lazy Cano and shoot Piece-of-Shit ARod.
      (What a great group!)

  135. People, they’ve got 1 man left in that bullpen, Dylan Axelrod. Could burn that out first.

  136. Anderson Silva says:

Warren warming up, about to wave the white flag.

  137. HateMclouth says:

You can just feel the walk off loss lurking…. Sure hope I’m wrong though.

  138. Wheels says:

    Nix, lol

  139. Anderson Silva says:

HAHAHA, thank god for Jayson Nix

  140. SDB says:

Nix does something EVERY day to help the team. FTS.

  141. forensic says:

    Geez Nix, that was terrible.

  142. Cy Pettitte says:

this team is such a fucking joke. thanks Nix.

  143. sangreal says:

I wonder if Gardner will even run here

  144. BigBlueAL says:

    Arod will be the hero.

  145. forensic says:

Damn, that looked much more into the gap off the bat, to me at least.

  146. Anderson Silva says:

game over with Warren coming in.

  147. BigBlueAL says:

Ahead in the count 1-0 and swings at a slider away for an easy groundout. Classic Yankee hitting w/RISP.

  148. Kramerica Industries says:

    1-15 with RISP.

That is, holy crap, just so fucking bad.

  149. stuart a says:

aroid shocker he hits the ball like a non cano 2b…

    1 for 14 RISP.

what a likeable team. so many gamers….gardner stole a base early in the count have that parade…

white sox have thrown about 60 more pitches and they are tied…

  150. stuart a says:

    1st guess. why not claiborne..

    the bad movie continues….

  151. forensic says:

Nix is so important you have to do a double switch to make sure he stays in the game???

  152. ExitCashman says:

ARod out of game. Gets early start out of ChiTown as team toils in extras.

  153. stuart a says:

as our brain trust in the radio booth would tell you nix a heck of a ballplayer. they think guys who hit 230 or so with maybe a 300 obp and who slug like my sister are really valuable players. I call them luis sojo..

  154. There’s Axelrod, 5.21 ERA, so you never know what might happen on their pitching. As long as Axelrod doesn’t get the Shelby miller treatment.

  155. stuart a says:

warren the loser has to get thru the bottom of the inning first.

yanks scored 4 runs already done for the day.

  156. ExitCashman says:

Hey, whatever happens in this game, it could be 100X worse: You could be listening to Harrelson calling it.

  157. Anderson Silva says:

    another terrible throw, another SB

  158. BigBlueAL says:

Do the Yankees teach all their catchers to short-hop their throws to 2B??

  159. ExitCashman says:

Didn’t this schmuck used to play soccer?

  160. Kramerica Industries says:

The Red Sox rallying in the 9th inning is about the least shocking thing ever.

  161. stuart a says:

astros have scored 6 more runs then the yanks.

  162. stuart a says:

DANKS a horrible hitter beating us would be appropriate….

  163. I seem to remember Beckham being an instant out last year (numbers reflect it too.) Every team has one of those headaches (McLouth, Ev. Cabrera, Ciriaco last year, etc).

  164. stuart a says:

yanks and sux have traded roles this season.

red sux will score almost 200 more runs then us this season.

johnny gomes, victorino, carp, napoli, salty, a bunch of mutants are better then our softies….

  165. Mr. Roth says:

Good thing we got all that right handed power to warm the bench in an extra inning tie game…

  166. Wheels says:

    Thanks Robbie.

  167. Cy Pettitte says:

I’m glad the ump pissed Robbie off

  168. forensic says:

  169. Lukaszek says:

CANO!!!! Four absolutely sh*t at-bats, and then a 440-foot bomb!

  170. Greg Gibson’s strike zone has been a borderline disaster area.

  171. ROBBIE CANO No. 22

  172. Mr. Roth says:

Gameday had the pitch that Cano homered on as an 85mph 2 seam fastball.

  173. HateMclouth (formerly I'mVernon) says:

Well would you look at that?!?

  174. WhittakerWalt says:

I wonder what Hawk’s reaction was to that shot.

  175. OldYanksFan says:

Cano is sooooooooooo lazy that should only count as a triple!

  176. Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

    Apparently, fuck yeah.

  177. Rolling Doughnut says:

Hat trick for Curtis. Just like old times.

  178. Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

I still think, without Mo right now, we’ll probably lose.

Hedging my bets with that “probably”, though.

  179. Tom says:

Just Robbie being lazy – he didn’t want to stand in the field for 17 innings as the two worst offenses in the AL went at each other

  180. BigBlueAL says:

Damnit, I went to the kitchen to get a drink and a snack and missed Cano’s HR.

  181. forensic says:

Quite a game for Nunez and Overbay, in VERY different ways.

  182. WhittakerWalt says:

    Dear Mr. Sterling-
Please explain how you “know” Nunez can hit. On what are you basing this decision?

  183. Dela G says:

    what a bomb by cano

  184. ExitCashman says:

Warren will be closing tonight’s game because A-Rod has taken the rest of the bullpen out to a steak dinner.

  185. Rolling Doughnut says:

    Warren still in there? Why?

  186. OldYanksFan says:

You missed nothing. Lazy Cano dogged it around the bases. He should be benched (and Mo traded and ARod shot).

  187. OldYanksFan says:

Christ! The Phillies give Utley 2/$27m. That’s nuts.

  188. Cy Pettitte says:

I’m not convinced that kill is still alive

  189. BigBlueAL says:

    Cant make it easy.

  190. Cy Pettitte says:

he should have just let it go ugh

  191. David N says:

Time to get back on the ledge again…

  192. ExitCashman says:

Those guys in the bullpen are the grounds crew.

  193. Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

Oh, lovely. This wasn’t predictable at all.

  194. Anderson Silva says:

    here we go!

  195. Karl Krawfid says:

    Idiot can’t even field.

    I hate this team.

  196. dkidd says:

    finish them!

  197. BigBlueAL says:

    No Boone for De Aza??

  198. forensic says:

Only the Yankees could lose that game…

  199. Wheels says:

    Devastating. RIP Yankees

  200. BigBlueAL says:

Yeah so no Logan or Claiborne that inning.

  201. SDB says:

I hate this team so much right now.

  202. vicki says:

white sox fans will call this the best win of the season.

  203. ExitCashman says:

Well, that game will never make Yankee Classics.

  204. Cy Pettitte says:

hope the fucking plane crashes on the way back to NY. fuck this team.

  205. dkidd says:

we’re gonna need a bigger meeting

  206. Lukaszek says:

    This is just f*cking unbelievable…

  207. Karl Krawfid says:

  208. Kevin G. says:

    This team fucking sucks

  209. W.B. Mason Williams says:

Gonna have to call this the low point of the season…woof.

  210. Anderson Silva says:

  211. BigBlueAL says:

Its a shame Warren was the last pitcher left for the Yankees.

  212. Kramerica Industries says:

    Go fuck yourself, Warren.

  213. The Real Greg says:

Called this from the Mets series that this team would do nothing.

  214. McLovin says:

    Am I able to cry?

  215. Tom says:

Well at least having Kelley throw ~50 meaningless pitches in an 8-1 blowout didn’t come back to haunt Girardi later in the series

  216. Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

I just want the season to end. I don’t want anything to do with this team anymore.

  217. Anderson Silva says:

Clairborne and Logan had warm up previously in this game, so they were definitely available, yet Girardi stuck with the lesser pitcher. It’s like he wanted to lose the game (and he did). Between this incapable manager and players like Overbay, how can this team accomplish anything? What a fucking joke.

    • The Real Greg says:

Again so want Girardi to die then?

    • stuart a says:

they are 11.5 out of first they are toast.

thsi team is wetting the bed but hey we got aroid back. so the circus will continue in the bronx on friday.

there are so many unlikeable players on this team where do I start; wells, aroid, hughes, jobber, and on and on..

they could not lose in 9 they needed to have the worse possible script for a loss and then boom..

i say they win 75 games……girardi post game should be in rare form…that is baseball, we play hard, blah blah blah….

  218. The Real Greg says:

So you all want Girardi to die then?

  219. Rolling Doughnut says:

  220. MB923 says:

I just….can’t. Ughhhh. MY FUCKING GOD.

First an 0-2 strike pitch to Adam Dunn which should have been in the dirt or 10 feet up high and we would have won. And now a boo boo ground ball.

  221. stuart a says:

good news the pen will be rested on friday.

warren 2 outs in the 12 and the athlete he is misplays the ball and then boom boom boom.

    1 for 16 with risp.

    this teeam is a disgrace…

  222. Cuso says:

I have not watched a second of this game after the seventh inning.

I am laying in bed and figured id check the outcome by coming to RAB. I saw everyone hoot and holler after a bomb by Cano.

I kept reloading the page just to see a peaceful end to my night.

But I can tell….something bad happened. Something really really bad.

    • Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

. Innings 1-top of 9 don’t matter except that the Yanks take a 1 run lead into the 9th.

. Mo has two outs, nobody on.

. A couple batters later he has Dunn up and goes 0-2 on him. Dunn ties the game the next pitch.

. Couple innings later Cano hits a home run. Yanks take the load.

. Warren pitches the next thing. Gets two outs, nobody on.

. Slow roller hit. Warren knocks it with his glove on the bounce. Batter safe.

. Loses the game a couple batters later.

. Team loses several hundred fans.

      The end.

  223. OldYanksFan says:

    Time for another team meeting….

  224. forensic says:

How many rock bottoms can this team reach?

  225. Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

I actually am in total shock that they lost this game. Oh, not that Warren blew it with two outs and nobody on. I expected that. Just looking at the game as a whole, it was almost impossible to lose TWICE. Just brutal.

  226. Kramerica Industries says:

11.5 back in the division and soon-to-be 7 in the wild card.

Seriously. Just give up the hope already. It’s not gonna happen. .500 probably won’t happen at this rate.

  227. OldYanksFan says:

Ya know what? ARod might be the most stable part of this team.

  228. Rich says:

That is officially my breaking point. I will not watch another game this season. I can’t anymore. Not only to go 2-6 and to lose a series to two last place teams but TO GET SWEPT BY A TEAM THAT WAS ON A TEN GAME LOSING STREAK!!! See you guys next season.

  229. WhittakerWalt says:

Just remember, the White Sox had lost TEN in a row before we came to town.
The 2013 New York Yankees, good for what ails you.

  230. Da Zhang says:

Well, the team keeps on finding new ways to lose. This is really getting ridiculous as to how bad we are.

  231. stuart a says:

nix fell on the basepaths… just is the epitome on how shitty this team is…

friiggin disgrace.. how many losers on 1 team…

  232. The Real Greg says:

People are honestly going off about this?

This team was done. Finished. Don’t cry for them.

  233. stuart a says:

loss 5 of 6 to the padres and whitesux..

    think about that.

  234. Cuso says:

That insane Mike A. Post-game thread from a couple months ago? That would have been apropos for tonight.

  235. HateMclouth (formerly I'mVernon) says:

I leave after Robbie’s HR thinking we have this in the bag. And then. And then this. Holy f*ck. This team is bad.

  236. It’s a loss. All of you who claim you’re done will be back Friday. I’ll be watching Friday because I want to watch Friday.

    • Wheels says:

People are allowed to say emotional things immediately following a loss like that.

    • stuart a says:

of course i will i am a yankee fan.

but wells sucks, joba is dope and aroid stinks are still true.

it is like saying nah soriano does not swing at sliders 2 feet outside because he has great plate discipline. that is not tru but I still want soriano to do well and tha yanks to win.

i am shocked they are even worse then i thought… girardi will say if he went to logan who i think stinks or claiborne and the sux tied the game up we had no pitchers and that may be true but they needed to win the game.. worry about the 13th inning when you get to it. axelrod is hughes horrible…

  237. Karl Krawfid says:

Is the luxury cap thing even going to matter when fans stop coming to games?

  238. The Real Greg says:

This is what it is going to be like for the next year at least

  239. WhittakerWalt says:

Fine, everyone just stop rooting for the team. Fair weather fans are not needed.

    • I root until Out 27, Game 162 with an E next to the name. Not rooting is not being a fan.

      • WhittakerWalt says:

Yeah. Other teams have down years all the time. Their fans don’t just jump ship when the going gets tough. I’d like to introduce some of these bandwagoners to a little something I like to call the 1991 Yankees.

        • Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

Who are you referring to? Because I’m really only going to check in sporadically from now on and watch when they’re winning, tied, or something interesting is happening. This is because watching them play daily is not fun right now.

This doesn’t mean I don’t want them to win. This doesn’t mean I hope they lose. This means that I don’t want to do something that brings me no enjoyment for the sake of invisible bragging rights that nobody gives a shit about.

          • True Pinstriped Blue says:

Thank God just go already. We know. You’re only a Yankee fan when they are winning. Congrats. Now BYE!!

          • HateMclouth (formerly I'mVernon) says:

Spot on. I can’t stand watching the team play. But I check RAB like 5 times a day. Still keep myself updated with all Yankees news: win, loss, prospects, whatever.

          • Rich says:

Totally agree. Who are these ppl that tell me I “quit” cause I know there is NO chance they will make the playoffs. It’s not like you sed I am gonna never root for this team. Just that I am not gonna stay up until 1230 in the morning with the off chance they will stay pace with the Royals and five teams nbehind the second wild card.

        • Cuso says:

I was there for of the 91 Yankees too. I grew up knowing my favoritee team as losers.

That doesn’t mean I blame people for being pissed at the current team.

Nor should you draw the assumption that because people bitch about the team losing that that makes them fairweather or accuse them of not being a true fan.

The Yankee Franchise has instilled in its fanbases the expectation of excellence. They purposely force their fans to let them know when their product is up to snuff. This is not just a product of the Steinbrenners. This is about 125 years worth of building an expectation of championship caliber in their fanbase.

Can you win every year? No. Can you expect this type of reaction when this is the product a multi-billion dollar organazation puts out there? You better believe it.

          • Rich says:

I grew up on Gerald Williams, Kevin Maas and Andy Hawkins. I remember Mel Hall, this team is not that bad but they are not the 98 Yanks. And I will follow this team for the rest of the year but I know this season is over as to getting into the postseason. And if I’m a front runner for saying they have no chance to make the playoffs then fine.

          • WhittakerWalt says:

I’m pissed, too. Extremely. I hate watching losing baseball.
And I’m not assuming anything. There are people in this thread who are literally saying they won’t watch Yankees baseball anymore. We’ve had an amazing, unprecedented run of success with this team. Now they’re bad. The games are excruciating. I’m still going to listen to them. Because I couldn’t live with myself if I stopped paying attention to my team. I can’t turn it off like that, even after a gut punch game like this one.
It has nothing to do with “bragging rights” or anything like that.
Look, we’re ALL pissed and disappointed. I just don’t think the solution is to stop following the games. Because, as I said, teams have bad years now and then. The Cubs still sell out their games, and they haven’t won a WS in over 100 years.

    • Mandy Stankewicz says:

    • Cuso says:

They are needed. Otherwis “die-hard” (always hated that term) fans wouldn’t be able to identify themselves.

How could anything be good, if bad didn’t exist?

    • Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

All right. Have fun doing something that has admittedly stopped being fun for bragging rights that don’t matter in the slightest.

  240. Cy Pettitte says:

oh look Rays come back to take the lead just like the Sox did. Must be nice to have a team that finds ways to win instead of imploding against 2 of the worst teams in the league.

  241. stuart a says:

hey guys don’t worry we got vernon wells. he is great against lefties. he hit a homerun in mid june…..

anyone who thinks this team has a pulse is on crack…this is a team of softies.. just remember how they crumbled in the playoffs when derek went down..

arod stinks. if yo uthink the guy at 38 is going to play like he did at 31 on roids you may want to look at some properties I need to sell..

management make me happy; dfa wells, please. play romine 60% of the time, try the younger guys out…DO IT.. what is the latest on almonte he sprain his ankle or they amputate it????

no more old, slow, fading overpaid shit…………no more………

    • There’s 47 games left…

Alex has been here for 3 games, not even a fair assessment.

      • stuart a says:

he stinks the guy cannot hit the ball hard.. he is ahorace clarke at 3B

warren missed the ball because he is a bad athlete…period. he is a losing player…no 1 here is shocked that he blew the game.. no 1…

      • WhittakerWalt says:

Even when Alex is playing well stuart hates him.
Even when the Yankees are playing well stuart focuses on the negative.
        He’s not a pleasant fellow.

    • forensic says:

Wells actually didn’t hit a homerun in June. His last one was mid-May.

  242. Improbable Island's Dirty Midget Whores (formerly RRR) says:

Why do people even care if people aren’t having fun watching the team and stop? Honestly, if being a “real fan” is doing something you don’t enjoy just for bragging rights, I don’t want to be one. But hey, I always thought a “real” fan just wanted the team to win.

Seriously, it’s dumb. It’s supposed to be fun. If it isn’t, what’s the point? Bragging rights because you did something admittedly unenjoyable? Well, have fun making no sense.

  243. Joe says:

1-16 with RISP all I can say is hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha seriously it’s the same shit from last year. They can get the homer, but can’t take a single with RISP when called for. Seriously what good was hitting 3 homers in this game if you can’t hit with RISP. This team deserved to lose this game.

  244. Stanislaw says:

    Tonight: “Fuck baseball”

Tomorrow: “At least they’ll get a good draft pick and there’s no game today.”

  245. forensic says:

Heh, Girardi’s postgame PC lasted all of about 3 questions. The media doesn’t even know what to bother asking anymore.

    • Cuso says:

Has he at least stopped claiming that “he believes in these guys because he’s seen them do it before (in April)”?

That was getting old back on Memorial Day.

      • forensic says:

Somewhat, it’s mostly just the canned “We need to start winning games, and do it right now, no matter who the opponent is.”

  246. Dave M says:

Finding new ways to lose. Holy crap I’m starting to hate this team.

  247. jack p says:

We have a 1.8% chance to make the playoffs, and the Mets have a 1.5% chance, this is getting absolutely HORRID.

    • nycsportzfan says:

Seriously, why would you even say the word playoffs on here? They just got swept by the whitesox for freaks sake! They just got swept by giving up the tying run with 2out and no one on in the 9th and then lost with 2out no one on, up one, in the 12th..

No ones even dreaming of a postseason berth with this loser team. They got Rain Man as there manager for godsake. Dudes a moron!
