Olney: Yankees are not talking to the Twins about Justin Morneau

By

Via Buster Olney: The Yankees are not discussing a possible waiver trade involving Justin Morneau with the Twins. Darren Wolfson hears New York is monitoring the slugger though, and they figure to do that right up until August 31st. Players have to be in the organization by that date to be eligible for the playoff roster, no exceptions.

Morneau, 32, cleared trade waivers earlier this month according to Mike Berardino, so he can be dealt to any team now. He’s owned approximately $3.5M for the rest of the year and will become a free agent for the first time this winter. The lefty-swinging Morneau is hitting .269/.322/.434 (107 wRC+) with 15 homers overall this season, but he’s been a monster in August: 158 wRC+ and seven homers.

The Yankees could use Morneau as a powerful part-time first baseman/part-time DH down the stretch, and fitting him onto the roster won’t be too big of an issue with September call-ups looming. They should probably focus on adding a starting pitcher (Dan Haren?) more than a bat right now, but every little upgrade matters at this point. Morneau would be useful in some capacity.

I’d like to see us add Morneau+ Haren + others.

We have 36 games left, we wouldn’t have to give up anything but 2013 $$ to land anybody at this point.

We have a pretty healthy lineup for the first time all year and we are 4 games back. Lets go all in baby.

After this year, Mo is done and who knows what we’ll get out of Jeter, Arod, Granderson, Tex, Cano, Granderson, Andy, Kuroda, CC.
This is it right here. There’s an opportunity in front of us.

Based on Cashman being against the Soriano deal, it doesn’t seem like he is seeing things the way I am, but in this spot I hope ownership goes over his head and brings us the help we need for this run.

    • Alan says:

Cashman wanted to wait just a few days for the price to lower, FWIW. Not completely against.

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

With rosters expanding in nine days, if the price is right, and with not many folks to bring up off the 40-man, as long as there’s not an excessive 40-man glut happening, why not get VERY deep if we’re within striking distance. I’m absolutely game on both, even if they don’t have a defined role.

I also think the Cash/Soriano thing is geting played up to absolutely ludicrous levels on here. It’s beyond a non-story. A good work environment is one in which there are different voices and opinions heard. That often means you don’t necessarily agree with the plan you agree to go with for the good of everyone else.

      • Alan says:

Maybe it’s just me, but “Wait a few days and they’ll deal him for less” sounds pretty reasonable.

All year people say we need to make a move and not overpay. Then it turns into sell. Everyone gives a hearty, “That’s IT?” when the deal is made. Cash says he’d wait for it to be lower and as soon as Soriano produces people go nuts over the comment. Insanity.

        • Robinson Tilapia says:

Yeah, it’s such a non-issue. Folks really don’t seem to understand that disagreement is part of any management environment sometimes.

          • Robinson Tilapia says:

…and you’re right. That’s not even disagreement. That’s “wait a few days before pulling the trigger.” It’s not even worth an extra breath.

  2. trr says:

If we really wanna make a run at it we need all the upgrades we can get, BUT…let’s not overpay. If it’s just $$$ spend it. Now.

  3. YankeeFan91 says:

If the Yankees get Morneau do the Yankees cut Overbay ?

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

Hey, I’d love to get him right on 8/31, option someone down to AAA, and get everyone back soon enough without having to do that.

But, yes, there’s where roster problems happen.

I’m not for cutting Reynolds or Overbay for him at the moment.

    • trr says:

No need to, MBL rosters expand on Sept 1.

  4. dkidd says:

we want a pitcher, not a (concussed) belly itcher!

  5. Conor in China says:

Both would help in September, but I think Haren is the most important.

  6. OldYanksFan says:

    J. Morneau:.268 .323 .431
Is this something to excited by?
Our current platoon may be better:

    Loverboy Against RHP: .274 .327 .466
    Reynolds Against LHP: .226 .341 .435

  7. What is your obsession with Dan Haren Mike? Current hot streak aside he has been worse than Hughes this year.

  8. rose heller says:

why can’t the yanks just buy Just buy Justin morneau? after all, they do have more money than the Vatican.
