Girardi says he’s “absolutely” considering letting Rivera play center field

This afternoon, Joe Girardi told reporters the Yankees are “absolutely” kicking around the idea of letting Mariano Rivera play an inning in center field before the end of the season. It won’t happen tonight, during the team’s final home game, because the game is meaningful to the Rays and they want to respect the pennant race. Something like that. If it does happen, it’ll be in Houston this weekend. Rivera would likely play center in the eighth and pitch in the ninth. I really hope this happens. Would make the entire season worth it.

If he records an outfield assist I would be able to die happy.

  2. hogsmog says:

Out of instinct he throws a cutter to Cano on a relay and takes out his kneecap, a fitting end to the 2013 season.

But seriously this is the coolest. I hope he gets to shag a fly.

  3. Robinson Tilapia says:

During the Houston series, Girardi will also allow:

    1) Me to try out at third for an inning
    2) MannyGeee to play first
    3) Eddard to manage for an inning
    4) forensic to act at Phil Hughes’s personal catcher for a game

In all seriousness, Joe’s explanation for why not tonight makes complete sense.

  4. bobby two-knives says:

Sorry, but if it’s for “the fans” – as Mariano was quoted last night – as well as for Mariano, then it has to be in Yankee Stadium. No questions. Screw that it’s a meaningful game for the Rays. Didn’t we help them enough last year?

    • vicki says:

it’s not beer league softball, guy. the rays haven’t clinched a berth, let alone home field, which will be huge in a one-game play-in.

tell the billion dollar rangers and indians it’s for the fans.

    • I'm a looser baby so why don't you kill me? says:

I’d say we’ve helped the plenty *this* year. I want to beat them so fucking bad.

  5. Nathan says:

What is one part of an inning of Mo, a future HOFer, playing CF that would disrespect the game?

If anyone has a free pass to do something questionable, it’s Mo.

    • forensic says:

He’s a future HOFer as a pitcher, not as a CFer. Want to do something? Then let him start the game and go a couple of innings, like he did when he first came up.

      • I'm a looser baby so why don't you kill me? says:

        Ooh. Me likey.

        • King of Fruitless Hypotheticals says:

he throws the first, plays CF for 2 and 3, meets the top of the order in the 4th.

Or, if Hughes is pitching the second and third, he meets the top of the order again in the second…

  6. yaokay says:

if it’sa really close game i can see not letting him play CF tonight. But if the game is all but decided by the 8th like it has been for the past 2 days, why the hell not?

  7. Barry says:

Screw all of that let him play 9 innings in CF and let him bat lead off. Who gives a shit about the other teams playoff hunts, Mariano has done enough to earn a little fun in his last game at the stadium he built.

  8. rose heller says:

back in the day, the yanks put guidrey in center field so why not mariano rivera.

  9. Wrecky says:

It would be cool to see Mo make a catch running up that hill in CF in Houston. Not just cool… amazing…
