Labor Day Open Thread

By

Happy Labor Day everyone. The weather completely stinks in the Tri-State Area, but hopefully you’re enjoying the holiday and maybe even firing up the grill one last time. Well, theoretically one last time. Back when I didn’t live in the city and actually had a barbeque, we used it well into October. How could you not?

Anyway, here’s your open thread for the night. MLB Network is showing the Rays and Angels later tonight (Archer vs. Richards), but that’s really it as far as sports stuff goes. Forget about baseball for a few hours and enjoy the holiday.

In all likely hood, with the A’s 6 ahead of the Yanks, the Rays are the realistic target.

    • Kramerica Industries says:

It’s more likely Texas will fall into the wild card picture than Oakland, really. Texas has a devil of a schedule down the stretch here.

      • JGYank says:

I see Texas as the better team. But I don’t think either will fall enough that we can catch them so that leaves the Rays and Os.

  2. forensic says:

There’s also a college football game on tonight at 5 (8 for you east coasters).

    happy marvin miller day everyone

didn’t see the game, how did cabral lurk (edit: look)?

    • Robinson Tilapia says:

If I were Boone Logan, I’d be sleeping with one eye open tonight. He even took time to liveblog his appearance in the game thread.

  4. Dalek Jeter says:

I can’t believe Hughes only lasted 1 inning. Cash(wo)man should be scouring the earth for better pitchers. Like Dice-K. He lasted 3 times longer than than Hughes today, and that’s no surprise. The Mets are a much more fun team to watch, and they caught Cashman sleeping again. They never have the injury problems the Yankees have and are so much younger and have such a brighter future with Harvey and Wheeler.

Seriously though, awesome win today. Everything looked awesome against a clearly inferior and flawed White Sox team. That throwing error Dunn made in the 4th made Giambi’s attempts to throw to 2nd good.

    • forensic says:

You can thank Joe Torre and Tony LaRussa for Hughes only lasting 1 inning today. They started the trend of removing pitchers after rain delays and Girardi is only following what they did.

Crazy ‘effin weekend here in NY; just wanna relax and do nothing tonight.
    Let’s see if that happens…

  6. Robert says:

Congrats on hit by JR Murphy, saw him in Trenton in early May.
Going to the Trenton Playoff game Thursday will report on what I see…

  7. Get Phelps Up says:

I wish I could go back in time and tell everyone yesterday that Hughes would pitch 1.1 innings and the final score would be 9-1. :)

  8. mustang (The Has Beens & Wannabes Bunch 2013) says:

Wouldn’t it be nice if the Red Sox drop the next 2 and the Yankees won the next 2?

6 games back with a 4 game home series at hand !!!!

Pipe dream I know, but it would be so much fun.

  9. mustang (The Has Beens & Wannabes Bunch 2013) says:

After this series the Yankees next 11 games are vs. the Red Sox and The O’s!

Needless to say the season is on the line the next 2 weeks.

    WEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!

  10. Tyrone Sharpton says:

By the way, has anyone seen Gary Sheffield’s walks + strikeout numbers every year? He had such a vicious, aggressive swing but he took walks and rarely struck out. impressive stuff

    • vicki says:

i spent some time looking at his numbers after matt warden’s interview with ken singleton, the one in which he compared kenny to swisher. i was digging for a better likeness; didn’t find one in sheff, who was a true power guy as well as an on-base machine. what a stud.

    • Cool Lester Smooth says:

Yeah, I actually got into an argument on FanGraphs about it because some idiot compared Delmon Young’s approach to to Gary Sheffield’s on an article about Puig.

  11. Mick taylor says:

Yanks only 3 back of Tampa for final wildcard. If they had won Sunday and cc had won that game in Tampa last month they would be tied
