First, two quick notes courtesy of Matt Eddy:

  • UTIL Addison Maruszak has been sent to the Arizona Fall League to replace OF Tyler Austin, who was pulled from the league after his wrist starting flaring up again. It was originally reported a player from another organization would replace Austin, but I guess not.
  • The Yankees have re-signing IF Carmen Angelini to a minor league contract. Injuries limited the former $1M bonus baby to only nine games from 2010-2012. He resurfaced to post a 133 wRC+ in 32 games for High-A Tampa this year, but only managed a 73 wRC+ following a promotion to Double-A Trenton.

Now, updates on the various winter ball action:

Arizona Fall League

  • OF Tyler Austin: 4 G, 4-12, 2 R, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP (.333/.438/.500) — he is indeed done for the year
  • C/3B Peter O’Brien: 9 G, 6-36, 4 R, 3 HR, 5 RBI, 2 BB, 13 K (.167/.211/.417) — between the regular season and AzFL, he’s at 147 strikeouts in 483 plate appearances (30.4%)
  • OF Mason Williams: 11 G, 12-46, 6 R, 3 2B, 2 RBI, 5 BB, 7 K, 2 SB, 1 CS (.261/.333/.326)
  • RHP Brett Gerritse: 5 G, 7.1 IP, 6 G, 5 R, 5 ER, 5 BB, 9 K, 1 WP (6.14 ERA, 1.50 WHIP)
  • LHP Fred Lewis: 6 G, 6.1 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 5 BB, 7 K, 1 WP (0.00 ERA, 1.58 WHIP)
  • LHP Vidal Nuno: 3 G, 3 GS, 10.2 IP, 14 H, 8 R, 6 ER, 1 BB, 9 K, 1 HR (5.06 ERA, 1.41 WHIP) — results aren’t terribly important, he just needs to make up some of the innings he lost due to groin injury
  • LHP James Pazos: 5 G, 4.2 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 7 K (0.00 ERA, 1.50 WHIP)

Dominican Winter League

  • OF Zoilo Almonte: 6 G, 8-24, 4 R, 2 HR, 2 RBI, 4 BB, 9 K, 2 SB, 1 CS (.333/.429/.583) — pending offseason moves, he’ll likely get a chance to make the team as an extra outfielder come Spring Training
  • C Gary Sanchez: 3 R, 2-9, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 K (.222/.222/.222)
  • LHP Francisco Rondon: 1 G, 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 1 K (6.75 ERA, 3.75 WHIP)
  • IF Leulgim BarrosoRHP Kelvin Castro, RHP Joel De La Cruz, and OF Kelvin DeLeon are listed on rosters but have not yet appeared in a game.

Mexican Pacific League

  • OF Jose Figueroa: 9 G, 1-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB, 2 K (.200/.333/.400)
  • IF Walt Ibarra: 12 G, 6-40, 3 R, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K (.333/.385/.500)
  • UTIL Ronnie Mustelier: 13 G, 11-46, 3 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 11 RBI, 7 BB, 7 K, 1 SB, 1 HBP (.239/.345/.326) – it’s early, but I thought he would really mash over the winter
  • RHP Gio Gallegos: 4 G, 5.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 WP (5.06 ERA, 1.88 WHIP)
  • The Yankees have four pitchers other than Gallegos listed on rosters, including LHP Manny Banuelos. Commenter Mikhel ran down their situations last week, so check it out.

The Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League (Puerto Rico) season begins on November 1st. The rosters have not been announced yet.

Venezuelan Winter League

  • C Francisco Arcia: 7 G, 6-16, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 2 BB, 3 K (.375/.444/.625)
  • IF Ali Castillo: 14 G, 13-44, 6 R, 2 2B, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 SB (.295/.311/.341)
  • OF Ramon Flores: 3 G, 0-6, 1 BB (.000/.143/.000)
  • OF Adonis Garcia: 10 G, 11-36, 6 R, 1 2B, 2 HR, 6 RBI, 3 BB, 7 K, 1 SB, 1 HBP (.306/.375/.500) — he could compete for a spare outfielder job in camp as well
  • C Jose Gil: 8 G, 6-28, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 5 K (.214/.267/.357)
  • UTIL Jose Pirela: 15 G, 16-55, 11 R, 5 2B, 3 3B, 2 HR, 10 RBI, 8 BB, 7 K, 1 CS, 1 HBP (.291/.379/.600) — recently re-signed to a new minor league deal and is an fringy utility man prospect
  • C Frankie Cervelli is listed on a roster but has not yet played in a game. I wonder if his stress-reacted elbow still isn’t 100% healed.

Zoilo Almonte looks to be our most impressive prospect.

  • Bo Knows

Williams is playing better it seems, wasn’t he like 7-31 at one point in the AFL?

  • Laz

I would still give Nuno a shot next spring. He is a very soft tosser, and I’m wondering if maybe his stuff just isn’t doing as good in this hitters league in Arizona.

  • Barry

If there was ever a time for Addison Maruszak to get motivated.

  • Farewell Mo

And the lousy play from down on farm has continued into the fall.

  • Elquetodolosabe

Any word on Melky Mesa ?

    • qwerty

      He’s been released

      • Eselquetodolosabe

Thank you for the info. Surprised that they didn’t re-sign him, as I assume that his release was an obligatory service/options thing. Thought he had a chance to be at least a 4th outfielder. Does anyone know if he’s been picked-up by anyone ?

  • nycsportzfan

Say Banuelos is healed up and back to having his control, how long in a best case scenario could it be, till we see him in the pros? I’m talking, he tears it up right outta the gates and in Spring Training..

    • qwerty

Best case scenario is 2015, but that is probably a pipe dream.

  • Pego

    ANGELINI!!!!!!
