Almonte continues to impress in winter ball

By

Got a handful of notes:

  • Scouting director Damon Oppenheimer told George King (subs. req’d) that RHP Ty Hensley participated in Instructional League after the season and will be ready to go for camp. “He looked like he was ready to go. He should be good for Spring Training,” said Oppenheimer. Hensley had surgery on both hips earlier this year.
  • MiLB.com posted their Yankees’ farm system All-Star team the other week it’s basically a roster of the best performers in the organization. C Gary Sanchez and 1B Greg Bird headline the team for obvious reasons. Both mashed this summer.
  • C R.J. Baker has been suspended 50 games for refusing to take an offseason drug test. The 29-year-old has been an organizational catcher for a few years now, spending a lot of time on the phantom DL and bouncing between levels, going wherever an extra backstop was needed.

Now, onto the stats:

Arizona Fall League (season is over, so these stats are final)

  • OF Tyler Austin: 4 G, 4-12, 2 R, 1 3B, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 1 K, 1 HBP (.333/.438/.500) — left the league with a wrist injury
  • UTIL Addison Maruszak: 10 G, 9-32, 8 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 10 BB, 5 K, 1 SB, 1 CS (.281/.452/.344)
  • 3B/C Peter O’Brien: 16 G, 12-63, 5 R, 2 2B, 4 HR, 13 RBI, 2 BB, 26 K (.190/.212/.413)
  • OF Mason Williams: 22 G, 23-86, 11 R, 6 2B, 4 RBI, 8 BB, 18 K, 4 SB, 2 CS (.267/.330/.337)
  • RHP Brett Gerritse: 9 G, 11.2 IP, 12 H, 12 R, 12 ER, 11 BB, 12 K, 2 HR,1 WP, 1 HB (9.26 ERA, 1.96 WHIP)
  • LHP Fred Lewis: 11 G, 11 IP, 8 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 5 BB, 10 K, 1 WP (0.00 ERA, 1.18 WHIP) — probably going to get taken in the Rule 5 Draft on Thursday
  • LHP Vidal Nuno: 5 G, 4 GS, 19.2 IP, 20 H, 10 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, 18 K, 1 HR (3.20 ERA, 1.17 WHIP)
  • LHP James Pazos: 10 G, 10.1 IP, 13 H, 5 R, 2 ER, 7 BB, 9 K, 2 WP (1.74 ERA, 1.94 WHIP)

Dominican Winter League (season ends Dec. 22nd)

  • OF Zoilo Almonte: 37 G, 48-148, 20 R, 8 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 15 RBI, 7 BB, 32 K, 6 SB, 2 CS (.324/.355/.453) — the Yankees only have two outfielders (one might be a DH) signed beyond 2014, so I don’t think all the recent additions push him completely out of the picture
  • IF Dean Anna: 9 G, 8-34, 1 R, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 4 BB, 7 K (.235/.316/.294) — acquired from the Padres last month
  • IF Yamaico Navarro: 35 G, 35-123, 21 R, 9 2B, 1 3B, 6 HR, 30 RBI, 24 BB, 19 K, 2 SB, 1 CS, 1 HBP (.285/.403/.502) — just signed to a minor league deal
  • IF Eduardo Nunez: 4 G, 3-17, 2 K (.176/.176/.176)
  • C Gary Sanchez: 12 G, 5-18, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 3 BB, 9 K, 1 SB (.179/.258/.214)
  • LHP Francisco Rondon: 2 G, 2.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 2K, 1 WP (3.86 ERA, 2.56 WHIP)

Mexican Pacific League (season ends Dec. 30th)

  • OF Jose Figueroa: 31 G, 3-25, 5 R, 2 2B, 1 BB, 9 K, 1 SB (.120/.154/.200)
  • UTIL Ronnie Mustelier: 36 G, 28-124, 16 R, 3 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 16 RBI, 20 BB, 23 K, 3 SB, 6 HBP (.266/.355/.290) — woof
  • 3B Zelous Wheeler: 49 G, 49-169, 31 R, 5 2B, 9 HR, 32 RBI, 27 BB, 34 K, 3 SB, 4 CS, 3 HBP (.290/.391/.479)
  • RHP Manny Barreda: 4 G, 4.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K (4.15 ERA, 1.38 WHIP)
  • LHP Gio Gallegos: 5 G, 6.1 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, 2 WP (4.26 ERA, 1.74 WHIP)

The Yankees do not have any players playing in the Roberto Clemente Professional Baseball League (Puerto Rico). The season ends at the end of the year.

Venezuelan Winter League (season ends Dec. 29th)

  • C Francisco Arcia: 19 G, 15-48, 7 R, 2 2B, 1 HR, 7 RBI, 5 BB, 13 K, 2 HBP (.313/.393/.417)
  • IF Ali Castillo: 30 G, 22-79, 11 R, 2 2B, 5 RBI, 2 BB, 8 K, 1 SB, 1 CS (.278/.296/.304)
  • OF Ramon Flores: 3 G, 0-6, 1 BB (.000/.143/.000) – hasn’t played in weeks
  • OF Adonis Garcia: 39 G, 51-164, 24 R, 10 2B, 1 3B, 3 HR, 27 RBI, 7 BB, 27 K, 3 SB, 2 HBP (.311/.345/.439)
  • C Jose Gil: 31 G, 31-102, 17 R, 6 2B, 1 3B, 4 HR, 21 RBI, 20 BB, 17 K, 1 SB, 3 CS, 2 HBP (.304/.424/.500) — nice winter for him
  • UTIL Jose Pirela: 49 G, 58-188, 40 R, 10 2B, 5 3B, 3 HR, 30 RBI, 30 BB, 25 K, 3 SB, 2 CS, 1 HBP (.309/.411/.463) — after back-to-back strong years in Double-A and this winter ball performance, I have to think some team will roll the dice in the Rule 5 Draft this week
  • OF Antoan Richardson: 36 G, 34-134, 19 R, 6 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 14 RBI, 24 BB, 27 K, 1 SB, 2 CS (.254/.353/.336)
  • RHP Jose Campos: 1 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 K, 1 HR (9.00 ERA, 3.00 WHIP)

Its a pipe dream, but I’m hoping that none of our MiLB players get drafted this week. Kahnle, Burawa, Nuding and Whitley could be possible bullpen pieces for us this or next year and Pirela could be a solid IF piece if he continues to progress. I’m hoping its like Nuno last year. He had put up some really solid numbers, but still no one took a chance on him. Just have to hope that other teams left similar, but better players unprotected.

Sorry if I’m late to the party, but how serious is Austin’s injury? I must have missed this bit of news.

Ronnie’s K/BB is looking pretty good though.

    But ‘oof’ is right.

    Zelous Wheeler? Awesome name.

  5. Farewell Mo says:

    Per Buster Olney.

A rival evaluator assigned to watch the Yankees’ farm system in 2013 had a stark take on the organization. “They have almost nothing at the top,” he said. “It’s really surprising.”

This is the next issue they desperately need to address. Giving up 3 draft picks at least next year isnt gonna help either though they had little choice if they wanted to stay competitive

    • Dick M says:

It needed to be addressed a long, long time ago. The guys in charge aren’t just aren’t up to it.

    • qwerty says:

Actually, they had a choice. The FA route is how they have decided to run the club for the foreseeable future. The yankees don’t draft well, don’t develop well, and chose not to trade any of their veterans for prospects or young players when they had the opportunity. They also don’t attack the IFA market like a lot of other teams. The only option left is free agency.

  6. Has Banuelos pitched at all this winter? Or is he still rehabbing from TJS?

  7. Mick taylor says:

How good a prospect is Adonis Garcia. And how did Robbie cano become a great major leaguer when he was a nothing non prospect in the minor leagues. Peds? Or are these scouts who say yanks have nothing at upper minors wrong again.

  8. Zelous Wheeler at third!

  9. qwerty says:

    “Almonte continues to impress”

There’s a reason why he’s the yankees’s number one prospect.

  10. mike b says:

It looks like this past weekend (or I should say Friday) George would have been prould of the kid ….but also pissed at losing Cano….If Georger were still alive & running the Team…Cashman be a goner by now
